Awesome class! She's really upbeat, smart, entertaining, wellprepared and clear!
nice,
Very involved, helpful; understands students; good lectures, notes posted online

Notes online and very upbeat. Good Prof.
u may fall asleep easily

stupid teacher, does not even know what she is talking about!
Easiest class of all first year combined with good prof. It's all good

doesnt know how to mark. worst teacher i've ever seen.
She might be helpful and teaches well but when it comes down to marking the exams, it's best if you do'nt have her. She takes marks off because her exams were too easy and compared to other sections the class average is too high. I don't recommend her.
If you want an AMERICAN prof who doesn't kno how to mark exams since she just assumes that she can take 1 mark off for every q after she marked it using US standards then go for it.. she even takes 1 mark off even if the q was perfect in the first place!!

Nice woman, and could be a good teacher at times.BUT,her marking was the worst I've ever seen. And when she was teaching information that she didn't know much about she was very unreliable.Sometimes it seemed like she was pulling her facts out of thin air.
WORST PROF EVER, Don't take her class and if you are unfortunate to be in her section, SWITCH OUT!
WORST PROF EVER. it's the only prof ever that i wanna shout filthy and obscene language to her!

Shez a Good prof, her notes really relate to her test material and as long as you go through that, u'll do fine on her tests, she marks better now, just that first midterm was a little awkward, but other than that..shez TEACHES WELL! Visual aids good!
She is a bad teacher. She didn't seam to know the material and got all her visual aids from the text book or the web and passed it off as her own. Marks were inconsitent and she was annoying.

She goes too quickly and rambles on about unrelated material too often. Tests are quite fair though.
Super nice in this upper-level course. She marks very fairly and even said the first 10 midterms marked all got A's. Midterm is medium, lab midterm hard, final is easy. Mushroom collections and group projects are giveaway marks! Love the lab food!
Her tests are super easy if you can reason and support your point. She doesn't use a mic so sit near the front if you want to hear her. Lectures are interesting but all the diagrams and pictures she uses are stolen from the text.
She's alright, but slightly annoying. I think some of the class participation activities are fun, but some would be better suited to a kindergarden class. Sometimes she races through difficult material and often is unable to answer questions.
I thought she was great. I don't understand how such a nice person could have made people so angry as to post such unfair comments about her. She was a good professor!
She's great. Funny and friendly. Classes were very enjoyable. Highly recommended.
She was my favorite first year prof! Her lectures were so interesting...even at 8AM! And I'm not a morning person! But she made class worth going to. Her tests are relatively easy if you read her notes over (her notes rock!) Really fun, interesting class!
She rules. Posts class notes on webct so students can print and bring to class. She tells you exactly what you need to know from them. She hints at possible exam questions and then the exact questions appear on the tests. Easiest A+ ever. Learned lots too. Highly recommended.
loves examples, less focus on specific facts, lots of what if questions
Cute, nice, funny, and passionate and good at teaching--what more do you want? Only downside--sometimes her online notes are even better than her in-class notes--but is that a downside afterall? Highly recommended prof.
She's a very nice, friendly prof. Her powerpoint notes are somewhat basic so if you add what she says to them, they make good notes. She focuses a lot on examples which is good most of the time. Overall, she's a good prof.
Great prof. Very good powerpoint slides, very clear explanations in class. Good presence on WebCT discussion boards if anyone needs help. Easy tests. If you're taking this course just to graduate, take it in the summer. Very easy and get it over with quick.
Smoking hot! And a great teacher with great resources to boot. It's a shame she's married...
Hmm. I think her tests are pretty hard. The questions are not really from what she goes over in class either. She's pretty helpful on WebCT, however. Slightly disorganized (always behind "schedule", whatever that means)
Her midterm is super hard...and she took big marks off for small mistakes...don't really like her lecture style...notes are useless for studying~
She's nice, but face it, she's a really hard marker. For exams her notes are basically useless.
Ya shes a hard grader, but shes very do-able.
I think she's great. Notes are online- very helpful if you bring them to class. Tests are hard, but fair.

Interesting classes, although the relevance of the topics are debatable. Wierd exams, even wierder marking.

Though the course is designed to be very easy, her marking standards make it quite hard. Lectures are fun and interesting, (she plays music before lectures and often shows a bunch of movies)though not relevant. She has a strict set of answers that she looks for in her exams, and she'll give you a zero even if your answer's correct in every way.
very creative and fair exam questions. i have no complaints. an integral part of the elite CSP team.
Pro: Fun Lectures, Con: Midterm worth 40% of final grade was out of 16 or so marks.
i love her! clear notes, explains stuff well, fair exams, fun.. she's just awesome! i love how she shows a lot of movies too. Study her notes well and you'll do good.
Celeste is a really nice (and fun) person and she makes the class really interesting. I think the only reason she doesn't have the nicest ratings is that she marks hard/weird. You bascially need to get the answer word for word or you don't get the mark. She is really nice though and she makes the class fun.

She's GREAT! Class is at 8AM, but otherwise the best class ever. Fun and exciting, with lots of movies and music!
Now that I'm in second year, I appreciate all she taught us! Am breezing through... Thanks, Celeste!

She builds off the text. It helps to do the reading FIRST. Exams are fun, actually- makes you think. First rate- I recommend her.
Celeste is my favorite of all our first year profs. She is friendly, and doesn't try to teach above our heads. Sometimes she just sits in the lounge to chat with us- made my year a whole lot better. She's a great teacher, too. Fun, interesting stuff out of the news as lecture topics. 5 star.
Awe.some.
Fun, interesting lectures. Lots of group work. fair exams. Available for help. Answers questions.
The lectures are interesting, but something about the way she teaches just rubs me the wrong way! Notes aren't very useful, and she usually goes through the material too quickly in all the wrong spots. Trying to do group work in lecture is kind of annoying and pointless. Midterms are peculiar.
While she is a great professor, she does seem to get 'sidetracked' and it's sometimes hard to distinguish the focus of the course. Her midterms, while I thought it was fine, held the class average of 65% or lower.... whatever that means.
She is great. I love her.
Midterms are hard. She makes the class very interesting, however sometimes she goes over her notes too quickly.
Didn't think she was great at all. Despite paying close attention, the questions on the exam usually emphasize something completely different. I think she wastes time doing stupid group activities that don't work out at all.
great prof, took her in the summer, fun, posts the power point slides online, has interesting things to say, didn't fall asleep in the 2 1/2 hour lecture, fairly easy midterm and final. if you need the science credits, this class is perfect
WOW, her lectures are the most interesting! Just listen and think along. So great!!! Just watch out for her exams; the questions are weird...straight from her lectures and sometimes out of the blue. But still, HIGHLY RECOMMEND because class is SO INTERESTING! :)
WHY DOESN'T SHE TEACH OTHER CLASSES THAN FIRST YEAR?? She's the best prof ever.
She is absolutely the best! Pay attention in class, her lectures are amazingly interesting. She is superbly awesome. Her tests aren't that bad at all, i don't know what other people are saying. She loves fungi! She does fun activites and shows sick videos.
Very interesting lectures but does too many case studies.
case studies were the best- she rocks.
Celeste presents a very interesting biology class! This course was extremely appealing to me as I have a great interest in ecology. Celeste is fair, very approachable and very upbeat which I appreciated. My one and only gripe was her notes--they're attrocious. My advice is that you go to class, listen and take your own notes. Easy homeworks!
very interesting to listen to
My fave prof this term. Her lectures are upbeat and full of fun stories. This makes it harder to figure out what is testable but she'll gladly answer that for you. Really hard marking on MT but final was the easiest I have taken so far. She's also on facebook and vista lots; she's very available.
class average was 66%
It's clear that she loves teaching and loves her students! Lectures are so engaging; pay attention and attend and classes and you'll barely have to study. I'm very inspired to pursue biology thanks to her :) Tests and assignments were quite easy.
fun teacher, probably the best one i had this year, but exams must have been marked by her dog cuz u'd get marks off for no apparent reason. attending every class is a good idea too
Class was at 8 in the morning but I still loved it. Very interesting. She is an excellent prof and on vista a lot if you ever need help. If you are in CSP and took Bio 111, it flows very well from that class!
Great professor. Lecture attendance is mandatory - everything makes so much sense. Class was 8 AM but because of her, I was always excited to go to class; Good CSP spirit!
Very fun lectures, mostly interesting stuff; however, it really doesn't have too much to do with what you're really supposed to be learning. Go to class if you have extra time, otherwise, just ask your friends what the class was about, and study the textbook instead. Her exams are really quite hard; you get a lot of marks off if you're not careful.
Celeste was a great prof! Super interesting lectures, and a pleasure to learn. Need to be in class, lecture notes have a lot of pictures and videos but not much explanations. In class though, she explains everything. And she is super nice and super fun!
One of my favorite first year profs! Lecture topics are creative and engaging, tests are generally fair.
Most interesting prof for my first year. Super fun. And she made everything clear to us.
She was a decent teacher. Her class was fun. Material wasn't difficult. However, her in-class notes are very disorganized. It's difficult to know what is being tested on, and what is extra. As long as one keeps his/her notes organized, and understands what is being tested (consult the syllabus or attend office hours), this is a good class to take.
Very nice person, fun class, midterms were fair but final was way too difficult!
Sooo fun to go to class. She made ecology funny. I loved the way she spoke, not sure exactly what it was but it just made me want to be her friend! Anyway, bio was my fave course last term, and my best grade, unsurprisingly. She was very clear about what we needed to know, and her lectures were always the best.
She is a very fun person with very interesting lectures. Be careful to attend, though...although she posts her slides online, they mostly consist of pictures and graphs that you won't understand unless you have heard her talk about them. Her exams are fair.
BEST PROF EVER. Never had such an engaging and exciting prof before. She's incredibly intelligent while still being very fun!
Celeste's lectures are straight to the point as she ensures that you have everything you need to know going into exams(I didn't open the textbook once). Her lectures are engaging & there is group work during class. Overall, easy to do well as she doesn't surprise you on exams with something she hasn't shown in class before or was in practice given.
Really great teacher. Gives textbook readings that can be long but really, if you pay attention in class and focus on the key points to her lectures, you will do very well. A teacher who wants her students to do well in her class and in future biology classes.
Fantastic professor. Got free food for every lecture, and class was never ever boring. Made learning hard topics seem really easy, etc. Do what you can to get in her class.
The projects were open ended allowing for creativity and the few major projects were interesting (determining whether labelled salmon is the species it claims to be). She even went out of her way to stay late (over an hour) and helped our group repair and conduct our experiment. Her positivity is simply radiant, take a class with her if you can.
She gives interesting lecture but are useless when it comes to assessments. She DOES NOT teach key terms in class and her midterms can screw you over for not having the key terms she wants, despite her lack of teaching and attending in that regard.
Best Prof ever! She made going to 8am lectures worth it, and had fun and interesting lectures. Make sure to understand and do all the worksheets that she posts online, and all the examples she goes through in class, as similar ones are likely to show up on exams!
I do not like her teaching style. Too many real life examples and not enough actual teaching
From syllabus: "midterms will have a collaborative portion... 25% of midterm marks will be done as a group, 75% will be individual. In order to pass the course, you must receive a cumulative grade of 50% or greater on the individual exams." Lectures with useless information not relate to her unpredictable test contents, study doesn't help.
She's nice, but lecture material is irrelevant, has nothing to do with stuff on exams. There are in-class quizzes done in groups sometimes (the only reason I even go). Often, marks are deducted off tests for little reason, so try to be overly specific in answering the questions. Also, hard to get ahold of in emails for clarification sometimes...
I atually decided to switch into her 8am lecture due to her raving reviews on here. This decision screwed me over. Shes a nice professor but her lectures are absolutly useless and do not go over any key terms what so ever. All learning you will have to do on your own. Also very hard to get ahold of if you need help.
She's nice but that doesn't mean anything when it comes to actually learning biology. She has way too many examples and does not go over important concepts for the midterms and final. Do not take her class if you want to do well in biology. The textbook is a better teacher than she is. She doesn't post solutions to the practice problems. She's BAD!
She doesn't teach. We have to learn everything ourselves
Personally I found her lecture style perfect - everything was taught using memorable case studies. I don't think I touched my textbook once. Though I know this learning style doesn't work for everyone, so some may find her a difficult professor. Make sure you don't miss any lectures and take good notes, since her slide can be uninformative.
She is nice, but she does not teach. You have to learn everything by yourself. I would strongly recommend another section over hers.
I would die for Dr. Leander.
Celeste is an extremely caring and understanding professor. She would make concessions and tried her best to be accessible through the world's crazy events (pandemic, Ukraine situation, etc). We were self graded, but she was always helpful and clear. She made class stress-free, promoted actual learning and created a great learning environment.
Incredible professor who cares a lot about her students and really values learning, if you put in the work, you will do well in her course. Knowledgable, helped us create our own research projects a
Celeste is knowledgeable in her area and does a great job at communicating evolutionary and general scientific concepts, enough to apply to class assignments and projects. I found the course to be a bit disorganized but I don't think it's Celeste's fault for this particular course. Celeste is very open with her students and gives good feedback.
Celeste is awesome. She made this class fun and stress-free and I actually look forward to class. She is very knowledgeable and taught the concepts in an engaging way. I learned a ton from this course and I would recommend her for BIOL180 any day. She is open to feedback and quite clear on what she is looking for so it was easy to navigate:)
BEST PROF EVER! Super caring and explains difficult concepts very well. She provides lots of feedback on what we did wrong on our exams plus how to improve and her lectures are recorded. Would 100% take again!!!
Awesome prof who tries to make learning fun and engaging rather than an info dump. Her lectures are recorded and the way she teaches makes you want to dig deeper. I was kind of scared in the beginning bc of all the negative ratings I saw here but I am so grateful I didn't switch out. She is super caring, understanding and clear on what she wants:)
pretty flexible and easy going. I never go to class and study a 2 days before both midterms but still got a 75
One of the best professors ever! Very interesting topics in class. My class average was very high. Grade was only 3 tests and an optional group project.
Super nice prof. She explains everything in clear detail. very approachable. Midterm and final worth are adjustable
Terrible professor. Don't get me wrong, the lab was fun and group-based. But she will NOT be present throughout the term. It's "self-graded" and you're left alone. Miriam is a terrible TA as well and incredibly harsh during labs and grading. Both of them should stick to other things that don't revolve around self-graded courses. Easy course though.
Incredibly annoying teacher
Professor Leander's class was challenging, but engaging. While lectures focused on real-life examples, the textbook was essential. unstuck AI was a helpful study tool alongside review sessions. Overall, a worthwhile course if you're willing to put in the work.
amazing prof, really fun and learning class. really motivates you to learn and participate
