Intense to put it nicely. She teaches like everyone is pursuing a degree in the languages and has unbelievablly high expectations. Most of the time you have no idea what she's talking about unless you are an Lit. or Writing major. She also tends to single out students and publically humiliate them and makes it her personal vendetta. Beware!

Do not reccomend. This teacher is very hard. She has her doctor degree and seems to think everyone else does too!!!

Dr. Carlson informed us on the first day of class that no one would recieve an "A" in this class. An "A" represents the fact that the student did not need any help with this subject. She wasn't lying.

Insane amount of expectations, as if since she has a PhD we all should be at that level. Unclear online course descriptions, and mismanaged due dates.I would highly recommend avoiding her.

Celia thinks that because she has her doctorate everyone else in her class should too. She constantly de-grades students work and leaves no feedback on how it could have been more specifically changed. There is a format that HAS to be followed for every single paper or the best you will get on the paper is a C avoid this old hag at all costs!

Absolutely horrid and horrible instructor. WR121, when I took it, is your opinion on certain topics. It is not!! She expects every word to fully agree with her perspective! And to top it off, everything has to have perfect grammar! Useless instructor, how could anyone say she is even remotely good...

She is the worst teacher I have ever had so far. She wants you to write essays specifically about your own opinion, and than mocks you for it if she does not agree. I asked her over and over again to please stop using sarcasm when grading my papers, and she continued. I am dropping the class because she is unwilling to help anyone, or teach.

The worst experience I have ever had in college was the last two weeks that I spent trying to figure out what she was talking about. Until she pretty much told me to drop her class. You will not get an A in her class do not take it! I wish like some of the other posts in here that I would have seeing this first!

After attending college part time for 4 years I have loved each and every class until now. This teacher cares ONLY about her opinion. She is so smart she doesn't know she is useless to her students. Celia Carlson is not good at explaining guidelines and grades based on her point of view on any topic (politics, religion etc.) She does not take time to help students when questions are asked. A rough draft is required to be submitted in order for her to give you feedback but she doesn't give any useful feedback. Horrible teacher.

I don't know why people before me state that Celia Carlson is "insanely smart". She is not. A few people in class corrected something she wrote on the board because she was using incorrect grammar and she tried to say it was actually OK. Ex: lettuce, pickle, mayo, and mustard. The comma does not go before the "and". After that she hated us.

Do not take any class with this instructor. She is very unhelpful, grumpy/rude, and her grading is strict, nor can you read her written feedback. She will pretty much call you a moron if you don't know something, save your time and choose a better instructor.

Very rude instructor. Thinks she is better than everyone else. Gives you instructions on how to improve, and after you correct one, she changes and finds other issues, instead of encouraging, she makes me more confused on how to write. I thought we were to write on our opinions, but she wants us or tells us to change things to fit her opinions.

I have to agree with a great many of the previous comments. She definitely does think of college-level writing as "C" work and admits to not giving A's to anyone. She gave me a C on a paper but did not give me any feedback on the content of the paper other than saying I had mis-numbered my pages. When going to her office, she was extremely rude.

This teacher gives poor feedback and grades on a personal bias of the essay topic. I took her class online. She belittles her students and encourages them to drop out rather than seek help from her or tutoring. I know I deserved an A, but she would only give me a B+. Missed the A by 2 points!

I loved to write and was told by everyone I was good at it. Ceila made me loathe writing. Took my work to my counselor to get help. My counselor, (who majored in writing) had NO CLUE what her instructions meant because Celia was so unclear. My family hated me during this time because I was so miserable in this class. I received an "A" last term and expect an "A" this next term. I only got a "B" from the doctor. Guess I am one of the lucky ones in class. Run for your life from this teacher. She has you fill in the blanks for the thesis statement she writes for you.

She is increadibly rude. Forget asking a question she will think you're stupid and give a mean reply.Doesn't post how to do assingments until its too late. Then pretty much thinks everyone should have known what to do. AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS!!!!

THE PROBLEM I SEE HERE IS. The College lets this teacher keep teaching. Because she has 10year even though she is destroying students attitude toward writing and toward college. Incredibly unforgiving with minor grammar mistakes. Grades extremely tough. Very unhelpful. Changes her mind frequently about the way she wants essay outlines and thesis statements to look.

I ended up getting my money back from the college because I threw a huge stink on how terrible she was. Talks to you like your 6, humiliates you in front of the class, and is al all around horrible person. Chooses policical topics, and grades depending on her view. If its not the same, you get a C or worse...regardless of grammar.

This teacher is horrible. She tells you one thing in class and then when you turn in what she asked for she tells you that is not what she wanted. terrible teacher. i loved writing before this class. she has sucked out every last bit of love and creativity i once had for the subject. worked really hard to revise all mistakes, and she gave me ZERO credit. stating "next time, do it right the first time" how can i learn if i cant revise my mistakes in a writing class? If you are a creative person and love writing. You must please leave this class. There were 8 students left at the end of the term. I was warned to drop it, but didn't. This is one of them. She wants to control people's thinking. I was made to feel like my opinion was always wrong(fellow students told me the same thing). Run!

If you like to write, don't take this class. She will find anything to rip on any essay. Then she will have your classmates do the same. She is unprofessional and a hypocrite. She gives directions for something one way then expects you to do it another. She requires MLA Format, but doesn't know MLA format. She has no business teaching...Period.

I kept telling myself, it had to be just me. However it's not. The first week she got in an arguement with a fellow classmate.I got a 1/5 on a rough draft with no explaination as to why, other than try harder. She seems to want it her way or no way and will fight with students about it.If I weren't passed the deadline for my money back I'd drop it.

This is the worst teacher I ever had. She just rips apart your work no matter how good it is. This is WR121 not a 200 level class. i don't know what she expects from her students but no matter what you're always wrong. Don't take this class with this teacher. It will lower your GPA because you will not pass. Also very rude to her students.

This is the worst teacher I ever had at MHCC. She is rude and extremely difficult. No clear reason why you got the grade you did. Tells you on day 1 getting an A is next to impossible. My GPA took a huge hit do to her. Awful, awful, awful.

Coming right out of 115, I had a great teacher and an "A", so when I took Dr. Carlson's class, I figured I would do pretty well in the first week, especially seeing as it was just a review of 115, NOPE I have a low C on week 2. My GPA has suffered immensely due to her. She is very vague when responding as well. My advice, TAKE SOMEONE ELSE'S CLASS!

She is completely awful. Doesn't help you understand AT ALL, tons of assignments, tough as heck grader, doesn't tell you why you get low scores. Impossible to get an A or even a B. She is rude, doesn't teach, a quiz every single class on random nonsense that she went over in the last class. IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT TAKING HER CLASS. BEWARE.

Vague and awful. I am a straight a student with an accomplished writing background. I don't tolerate instructors with agendas; particularly ones who ignore facts in order to promote their agendas. She grades based on how well you agree with her, and not on your critical thinking skills, ability to write, and interest in learning.

I figure I take these online and my husband can help (Which happen to have a Bachelor in English) She very criteria towards you work. I've always been pretty good with grammar and writing; Dr. Carlson made me feel like I'd never spoken English before. She's a big fan of following grammar rules that she herself has made up, and is really inconsistent with her criteria. One minute you'll be doing everything perfectly fine, and then you're doing everything wrong. Avoid at all costs!

Completed an essay and was told to scrap it. Went to the AVID center to get a thesis statement, and the instructor said the thesis from the learning specialist wouldn't work. I was given 3 days to rewrite it. Inconsistent with criteria and does not explain why poor grades are given. Learning/AVID center doesn't help. Avoid her at all costs.

If you don't agree with her on a subject you are not going to get a good grade, will not budge even if extra credit is supposed to help out. Essays are worth more than the 20 point final.

Absolutely dreadful. She went off on long, open ended rants that left the class very lost and would get frustrated that we couldn't read her mind. Homework and three essays are worth more than the final, and many of the lectures don't tie in together or seem to relate to the goal of the class.

She gives homework ,and she gives you very low grade even if you work with tutors. This instructor did not give any feedback with criteria. Avoid her class, she does not have vocation. I dropped her class and many classmates as well. Just a few students decided to stay in her class no more than four.

Dr. Carlson told us she would be to class early every day. She is late every day, but if we show up late she gets angry. She grades on participation but if you participate too much she tells you to stop participating. She is unclear with essay and HW instructions and has blocked emails from students. When she grades the critiques are unhelpful.

I didn't improve my own or learn anything new about writing. The class is found stumbling around till we hit the semi-right answer she is looking for. The textbook doesn't teach anything new about writing. She grades very critically and at times contradictory of what's shes looking for. She nit picks rather than appreciates your own ideas.

Very harsh grader with unclear criteria for papers. Very strict about MLA and will mark you down for any error. It is a writing class so I was expecting to write a lot, but this class takes it to an extreme. We would have 1-3 papers due each week. No late work accepted and if you miss 2 classes you lose 10% of your grade.

This has been the first English/ writing class that has been difficult for me. I feel she was more focus on getting mad at us and being harsh with grading rather then actually teaching us anything. She doesnt explain her criteria well and any time I had a question about something she wouldnt give me much advice to fix the problem.

Basically the worst teacher I've ever had. She gives incredibly vague instructions, gets mad at you when you don't understand, doesn't help you when you ask, but instead reprimands you, and is INCREDIBLY rude. She is also never satisfied with what you turn in, and if you fix it, she will complain about something else. 0/10 I am dropping the class

This is the 2nd term she has failed me twice now. I made the fatal, GPA ruining mistake of not checking her rating on rate my professor before applying for classes. Im going to submit a complaint to the school requesting that they review her reviews and seriously investigate her shortcomings. She has an extremely harsh grading criteria. Never again

I took an online class for more time with work. She was not even my first option as a professor. I had a professor change at the last minute and now I wish I chose someone else. She has a lot of readings with a 1-page reflection on Wednesdays. Then we have another 2-page reflection due Sunday. She just gives too much work and is a tough grader.

Just going on week 2 of class only, and she comments on everyones post. She will BOLD her words or use "quotations" when commenting in discussions. Very annoying and rude. Thought it is a discussion for whatever is being talked about. Guess not. DROP. HER.

There are many essays that impact your grade heavily, and she is a very hard grader for essays and discussions. I met with an AVID tutor to bring up my grade but I still got marked down on a lot, even after the tutor (who has a degree in English and writing) proofread it. Her class caused a lot of stress and I would not take her class again.

This teacher held me to abnormally high standards and I wasn't sure if she treated anyone else the same. I felt like I was being targeted half of the time which was super uncomfortable. She is also no where near fun to communicate with. I watched this class dwindle and the remaining students looked bored and irritated out of their minds.

generally, this course is what you would expect for WR121. Plenty of reading, discussion posts and class discussions. Beware of the essays and literary citations. Dr. Carlson doesn't give two cents about your writing quality, topics or work she grades specifically on structure. You will place your arguments/ solutions in your paper where she wants.

Will grade you based on how much she agrees with you over the quality of your work. Rude and unhelpful feedback. Inconsistent AT BEST grading criteria. Overall awful experience and I'm glad I passed that class. It's a miracle the college hasn't fired her, she disgraces the good professors at this school with her mere presence.

The teacher does not give good structure and outlines on your assignments. Is very short when she grades your assignments and does not give much feedback and does not offer revisions. She speaks in a short tone with attitude if you ask for advice or help from her. Is a very tough grader and doesnt give instructions on how to get better.

100% Do not recommend her class. I feel validated after seeing these reviews. This teacher has a bad attitude and grades unfairly. If you complete the work you risk getting a 0 anyways and will be advised to drop because you have an F after turning in every assignment.

The feedback I got from other students on this essay was fabulous, but she gave me a 60/100. This is how every assignment went. Never provided any helpful feedback on anything.

Super confusing on what she wants. If you submit an essay draft you'll most likely get feedback that's just telling you to go to tutor or to write about something else. Lectures are going over that week's article and computer lab. I'm sure she's a nice lady outside of school but man, just choose a different instructor.

I am a POC a lot of the subjects revolved around societal issues. My experiences with racism, homophobia, addiction, etc. were subjugated by her as it didn't resonate with her ideology. She tells you what to think but not how to think. I've heard from faculty she stays on because she makes the college money from failing sm students, a pedantic lady

She values format over quality of writing. Her weekly articles aren't even in the format she wants. She was very passive aggressive in my ROUGH DRAFT instead of giving real advice. On the side of my paper: “You would've gotten this if you weren't on your phone.” Like okay? I turn in my rough draft on time while using your examples as reference.

Instead of being an actual teacher she would like to send email after email about reaching out to a tutor! What about doing your J O B!!! Format isn't everything, the sooner she realizes the sooner maybe she can live a happier less nitpicky life as a whole. I would never recommend this professor.I was surprised to hear that there would be 4 essays,which was very excessive compared to other instructors,then I noticed how political she was being(I thought this was a writing class),when I found out she had a bad rating on here, I immediately dropped out after 2 classes and went for a different instructor

Had 3-4 writing sessions with a tutor on my paper and still failed. Too much stress for one class. Who do you think you are lady! You should feel ashamed of yourself for making others feel bad about themselves.

Celia had incredibly confusing instructions, and when she is asked to clarify, she tells us to go ask a tutor rather than helping students herself. She forgot to put due dates on several assignments and she also forgot to post the links to submit those assignments. I would not recommend taking her classes.
