Best chemistry professor I've ever had! He explains the concepts so well and tests you on the important things about orgo. He is extremely helpful and very clear. Organic chemistry is just a difficult concept so be prepared to study, but he makes the class a lot more understanding.
Dr Gonzalez is an excellent teacher. Clear, efficient, and available, he offers a variety of opportunities for his students to bring out their BEST in the class. He gives little homework, and many optional practice problems and worksheets for students to improve. I would definitely take another class with him without any hesitation.
Made orgo accessible for all. Orgo is already challenging but he made it a lot easier. Great in lecture and available to explain further after class and during office hours every week. Exams were similar to hw worksheets he gives for practice. Am taking him again for orgo 2 and CAN'T WAIT. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!
Professor Gonzalez is the best teacher I've had so far in college. His lectures are so helpful and he really knows how to teach the material so that it makes sense. If you do a lot of practice problems, go to lecture, and go to office hours if you're confused, an A is totally doable. Tests are challenging but fair. He's also really nice and funny!
Dr Gonzalez was the best. He really helped take an incredibly hard subject and make it more manageable and easier to understand. Very thorough lectures. Definitely take him!
While he appears to be strict and un-approachable at times, Dr. Gonzalez is, in fact, a caring professor that prefers to have his students do well. Approach him outside of class if you are struggling, be honest with him and use him as a resource. His exams are clear, and he gives you the right material to prepare you without any surprises.
Great professor! For his CHM 110 class the textbook is completely useless. His lectures can be very entertaining as he is a very nice person with a sense of humor. He really appreciates participation and makes a large class feel smaller.
The tests for CHM121 are now standardized so it doesn't matter as much who you have because you will all be taking the same exam. Class averages ranged for 60% to 70% throughout the semester with only one exam being curved. Do all the homework and also the suggested textbook problems (listed on his blackboard) for the chapter because they HELP!!
Horrible professor. Don't take him. Regardless of how much you study, you can never get above 70. The class median was 58.
Best organic chemistry prof at the University of Miami. Take his lectures!!! He prepares you for the exam but, also to better understand the material in general. After all organic chemistry is a difficult class but, he prepares you. Instead of being a discouraging class he makes it an encouraging class although, you still need to work hard to pass.
No matter who you take, the class is hard. I give props to anyone who can successfully teach 2 semesters of chem into 1. UM's chem department in general is trash, but Gonzalez does a really good job at helping his students understand the material. You definitely have to attend class & put in lots of time studying outside class if you want to pass.
Gonzalez is a really good professor, UMs chemistry department isnt very good.. orgo 1 isnt curved so..
I LOVED having Prof. Gonzalez and wish he was teaching Orgo next semester. He really cares and really appreciates the people who participate. If you put in the work and read the textbook there is no reason you can't get an A. HW is annoying on ALEKS but it's the same with every chem prof. Gonzalez does a good job explaining and is very accessible.
What a professor indeed, this man is very confusing on his best days and generally doesn't care if the majority of the class understands what's taught, he will often laugh or retort when a questions is asked and you don't understand, or he will state "what do you mean , it makes sense" I advise taking another professor, very rude as well
Orgo is hard. Period. But dr. Gonzalez made it more enjoyable. He's really funny and sassy and definitely teaches the topics really thoroughly. It was annoying that the exams were created by three professors, not just him, so some of the exam questions were weird, but overall very doable if you study hard. You definitely need to put the effort in
Gonzalez has a bit of spark to him. Hes only gonna help you if you prove you want to learn and even then you gotta deal with some sass. The course in fall 2019 was really messed up, almost everyone failed so they changed the curriculum now. Dr Gonzalez goes fast and assumes you have a strong basis in chemistry. Study and go to office hours often
Dr. Gonzalez is an awesome professor. Regardless of who you take, CHM121 is a notoriously difficult class. However, Dr. Gonzalez definitely makes it manageable for you and really wants his students to learn. Does a bunch of practice problems that help a lot and will thoroughly answer any question you have to make sure you understand. Great guy
Hes a great professor and a great man. You just need to really care and work hard and hell help you succeed. Orgo is OD hard but hes the guy you want to work with. Do the textbook problems and understand the concepts really well
Honestly, CHM121 is hard af by nature and youre going to need to study HARD. This has nothing to do with the prof you choose. Dr. Gonzalez is a really genuine guy tho. Hes super accessible and responds quickly. He was very patient and reasonable COVID-19 transition. He also gives great lectures and explains things really well in office hours.
I had him for CHM 110 and 121 and love the way he teaches. He may seem unapproachable but he's not. If you're struggling go to his office hours because he's actually helpful. He does his best to give extra credit on tests and his lectures are solid. Best CHM professor I've had! Read the book before you go to class and do the practice problems!
Gonzalez is a very good option for CHM121. For me, he explained difficult concepts in a very understandable and easy fashion. His exams are mostly based on optional practice problems from the textbook, and he is available for office hours several days a week if you have questions.
Very very tough and he does not curve !!!! Orgo is hard and even during a pandemic he wont curve your grade!
Orgo is super hard, but what I really appreciated about Gonzalez is that hes very accessible, with lots of office hours and appointments. When you ask a question, he asks YOU a question and guides you through how to do it, so you feel more confident solving on your own. Sassy, some people are weirdly obsessed with him, but a nice guy + good prof.
literally this is the worst class of all time do not take it if you have any other options
vErY siMpLy
one of the worst professors I've ever had. literally does not care about his students although he claims to. when you ask him questions he either belittles you or doesn't answer. has a huge ego and acts like his time is more important than others. also gives a lot of homework and doesn't give any review material for exams other than a few questions
This was quite possibly the worst experience of my life. He is super rude and condescending, the tests are nothing like the homework, lectures, or textbook problems he gives. The tests are worth like 2,000 points and the homework is worth like 3 points. Honestly the whole chem department sucks but he's the worst one.
Quite honestly Gonzalez is the worst person I have met in my entire life. He is rude and does not care about teaching or students. He is extremely rude if you ask a question in class or even email him. The tests are ridiculous and there is no partial credit for work because he's too lazy to grade that. He sucks.
When the class average for a test is a 38 there should be a curve but Gonzalez won't give one. He also won't answer emails for multiple days at a time and isn't helpful when he does. He is horrible to listen to in class but its not like anything he's saying is relevant to the exams anyway
Cesar Gonzalez should pick a new career because he's really bad at the one he has now.
Wow I cannot say enough about how absolutely horrible Cesar Gonzalez is! This class was awful he cannot teach not that he cares about that because if you say you don't understand something he will laugh at you! The homework is useless it has nothing to do with the exam and it takes hours to do for no reason. This class is the worst.
I truly do not understand any of the positive reviews on here. This man is the worst professor ever. Yeah chemistry is hard but this dude literally tries to get you to fail. If you haven't taken AP chem you're gonna struggle and even if you have I still would not recommend.
Apparently once classes switched to online this man forgot how to be a professor. He really does one practice question per class and then gives up and half the time he does them wrong. I can't believe I had to pay 6000 dollars to take this class just to have the worst professor of all time.
If you have any way to avoid this man, do it. Every day I had this class I seriously thought about dropping out of school. I took the class again somewhere else and everything made so much more sense and the tests were actually on stuff in the class so it really is just him.
Absolutely horrible. Genuinely cannot understand how anyone could ever like him as a person/professor. He is SO condescendingly rude, doesn't care about his students, & literally will not give you any help whatsoever. I urge you to take ANY other prof for this class if you have to take it for credit. and if u didn't take AP Chem, ur bound for a D/F
chile... if you have him don't even try. i promise ur gonna fail regardless
I took a dual enrollment Gen Chem 1 before I took this class, so I had an advantage. But I felt like this class was pretty fair and the tests were not that bad at all. As long as you did the ALEKS, self-assessment, and the questions by topic, you were fine for the tests. This class goes super fast, so I highly recommend making a weekly summary.
seeing as he has received negative reviews, i want to say UM's chem department is meant to be hard. gonzalez is an amazing prof and i had him for 221 and now 222. he is a very caring prof and good, but UM's chem dept is not very forgiving and the averages for the exams since i've entered here as a freshman have been really low. he is a solid choice
How could anyone give this man a positive review he is the worst professor at the entire university and the people who say the Chen department is hard yeah it is but I would go to knecht office hours to learn chem because this guy literally doesnt know any chemistry
Chemistry is a very difficult subject no matter what level youre at but Cesar Gonzalez makes it so much worse. He makes the simple things complicated and his tests dont actually test on what is taught in class. Theres no point in going to office hours because half the time he doesnt know how to do the problems. Hes useless.
Most of the bad ratings are because of the classs difficulty and not because of the actual teacher. Lectures are thorough, he posts tons of suggested book problems (exams are based off of these) and problem solving videos, and the homework is a lot but it helps. Not the best at answering questions in class but just email him or set up a meeting.
Unless you already have a PhD in chemistry good luck in this class. He really assumes everyone already knows everything and the tests are ridiculous and they don't even grade your work for partial credit anymore like they used to.
If you have any other option I'd take it because I really believe this guy is the worst professor at this university.
I was in the hospital during one of the exams so I emailed and asked if there was any other time I could take it. He said no and if I didn't take it I would get a 0. He is incredibly rude and unfair I genuinely hate this man. He has no empathy for any situation and he can't actually teach any of the topics.
DONT LISTEN TO ANY POSITIVE REVIEWS. He is literally the most horrible professor I have ever had, I get that chemistry is hard but he really makes it worse. Miami's chem department kinda sucks but there are definitely better professors than him.
I don't know what happened to this man, but obviously he is not a good professor anymore. I don't think he should even have a job that's how bad he sucks. He can't do any problems without looking at his notes and he still gets them wrong, but if you answer wrong in class he will ridicule you. 0/10 do not recommend
This man literally made me drop out of school lol. He's so awful I can't even describe it.
Too many bad reviews for this man. This professor has made himself extremely available all throughout semester with multiple office hours and easy access to scheduling online appointments with him. I was able to participate even online. Simply listening to him, doing ALEKS well , self-practice & extra credit helped me get an A+. Raw might be B+/A-
Definitely a caring professor; would stop class just to explain a problem if even 1 person didnt get it. Problem-solving class so get ready to do math, but youll understand it by the end of the semester if you pay attention. Got a 105 on the final, but I did study so its not an effortless class, but definitely doable. ALEKS homework sucks tho.
Took CHM121 in Spring 2020- Cesar was an amazing prof! He has a great rep with past students, and friends in his Orgo 2 this fall; we're all not sure what happened in the gen chem class. Class was hard, but quality of teaching was no lower than a 3.5 at worst. Understand how the hw (ALEKS) and concepts from class+discussion work - you'll do well.
I have noticed if you do the bare minimum you are going to be getting Ds and Cs on the 5 exams. When you do the recommended textbook problems, the class becomes an easy A. The exams are standardized across the whole chem department, so every chem profs exams are just as difficult. He can come across as a little direct and rude, but me means well.
do the textbook problems hes a good prof
I loved Professor Gonzalez. It's very important to go to the lectures, ask questions, and understand the problems we do in class. He answers emails fast and is very accessible outside of class. Highly recommend. Also its helpful or read the textbook and do the textbook practice problems to be successful on the exams.
The chemistry department at this school is horrible. I dont know how someone like me can get above average on every exam but still end with a C. Orgo 2 was barely curved. Take your chemistry sequence somewhere else
Took ib chem , why I did not fail. I knew all the content yet only got A on 1st exam. Had 4 exams and final. Did better on final vs last 2 exams. Weekly Quizzes and ALEKS assigned and test reviews are useless, practice book Qs. 1 exam avg 56, gave extra exam via ALEKS 15 added to grade, I stopped going to lecture and did fine just study for tests
I had Dr. Gonzalez for HHMI Chemistry Lab. We cannot choose our professors in HHMI, but know that you're in good hands. He's humorous & patient even when our group bombarded him with questions (not our fault entirely as the rubrics were sometimes vague). A bit presentation heavy, follow instructions and feedback & you'll do well in the class.
I personally think hes a good professor, but the chemistry department does not curve. I received always 5-8 points above the average on exams only to get a C in the class since the class was only curved to a C. By that around 40% of the class technically did not pass. I would take your orgo sequence elsewhere
I think he's an excellent professor, I am not the best in chemistry; and he was the best !!!. He really does care if you care of course. The exams are very hard but doable. I really do recommend him. I took him for Orgo 1 and 2 and received a B and B+
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! going to lecture helps but test questions are very different than ALEKS homework and questions given in class. this classed caused me way too much stress and its not even over yet. if you have to take him study two weeks in advance for tests 2&3. very arrogant, wont give you extensions even when a grandparent of mine passed away
Organic chemistry is a really tough class no matter who you take. I would recommend Dr. Gonzalez if you are taking this class, his lectures are pretty easy to follow and he is a good professor. As long as you go to class and pay attention and study like a week in advance for tests you should be fine. Also read the book it helps a lot.
Organic Chemistry is very hard. There is a steep learning curve, and it requires a lot of practice. Professor Gonzales is a solid choice as a teacher. He is engaging in lectures and accessible during office hours. His method of explaining concepts is getting you to connect the dots. If you want help, you gotta make the effort to contact him.
If you want a decent grade in this class you have to study at least a week in advance for tests. Surprisingly, the final was the easiest test out of all the tests he gave through out the semester. The ALEKS homework he assigns is useless for studying for exams just stick to the suggested textbook problems he gives and you'll be fine.
Orgo1 is a hard class but Gonzalez makes it very doable. I studied for all the exams like a day or 2 before and did well on all of them. The only thing you need to do is go to class. If you go to class everyday and take good notes, you'll do fine in the class. He really simplifies the concepts and does a bunch of different problems in class.
He was one of my favorite teachers at UM. Organic Chemistry 2 is a difficult class, but his lectures were engaging. He was very helpful in his office hours and would explain everything thoroughly. I never asked a question in class and left not knowing the answer. His tests were fair and the textbook is your best friend.
Dr. Gonzalez should consider a new career path because he is not very good at the job he has now. Took him last spring for Orgo 2 and he over complicates everything and provides no additional help. Hes also pretty heartless. My grandmother passed away a day before the exam and he told me You should have been prepared. Im sorry, WHAT?!
Great teacher. Tests are proctored. No quizzes. Not a lot of hw, mastering chemistry. Lectures arent mandatory but extremely helpful. Challenging but an over all good class. When answering questions he is sometimes a little unclear and not too helpful in class. Better in office hours. Drops lowest exam grade.
He's very arrogant, doesn't let you finish your sentence before he starts talking. Doesn't respond to emails. Test averages are lower than other teachers.
He's a mediocre teacher, not amazing but not the worst i've had. Lots of lectures, you have to practice and teach yourself some concepts in order to pass. Makes you feel stupid if you ask a question tbh.
Doesnt really answer your questions and over complicated things. Teaches class as if we are chem majors and some of us have never seen chem before.
Orgo is hard. No one denies that. But Orgo is Gonzalez's favorite course to teach, and he is very good at it. He is engaging, builds on previous knowledge, and is great at simplifying difficult concepts. He goes over your exam with you when you pick it up, and gives great feed back. I recommend him to everyone that has to take orgo 1.
Gonzalez is a great teacher. He makes the class understandable and approachable. Organic chemistry is often demonized, but I realized in his class that it is not only manageable but that it can be enjoyable. I would highly suggest going to office hours. You MUST study for multiple hours outside of class. He expects you to have a basic understanding
Great professor. Hes definitely the best to learn orgo from. In my opinion his exams were fair and his lectures reflected the exams. Hes easy to learn from and gives great feedback. Most of these bad reviews are from the class being difficult not the professor himself.
Personally, I love Dr. Gonzalez's chm121 class, and I felt like it was very doable even if you didn't have a chem background. If you study outside of class, do recommended text-book problems, and UNDERSTAND the material you will be fine. I feel like most of the bad reviews are people that expect a good grade without putting in any effort.
CHM121 is hard in general but Cesar made it bearable. The exams are very challenging but the class is curved at the end so that helps
was nice and funny during lectures and willing to help outside of class but i did not find his office hours that helpful. he explained everything fairly well during lectures but the examples he did were a lot easier than the tests. he did not do review sessions like other teachers before tests and you are responsible to teach yourself for tests
All tests are based off of worksheets given prior to the test. If you understand the material then you should pass easily with an A. If not, you're screwed. All homework is on Mastering Assignments which gives you unlimited attempts until you're correct.
Orgo is hard but he makes it doable. Highly recommend going to office hours and building a relationship with him. His tests were hard but overall fair. He rarely does review and when he does the questions are way too easy. He's engaging in class and encourages participation. Do the textbook problems, understand the concepts, you should do well.
Cesar really isn't a bad prof, you just need to put in the work outside of class. If you actually listen in his lectures and take good notes, they will be a very good resource for exams. He moves through material very fast so make sure you're going to workshops/student hours. He can also be a little patronizing at times which makes him hard to like
This is organic chemistry. It is so hard and so much work. But Dr. Gonzalez is great!! He keeps the class engaging and has so many hours available to the students. He was really personable with our class. In my opinion he gives everything possible for you to be successful, it's just a hard class. It's up to you to put in the work.
Dr. Gonzalez is a great professor, he is always willing to help with any questions and he holds multiple office hours during test weeks. Orgo is a very complex subject, students should be prepared to do lots of practice problems to succeed. I am glad I had Dr. G this semester because his explanations helped solidify my understanding so much!
This class was a complete disaster, but I don't think it is entirely Dr. Gonzalez's fault. He tries to explain things thoroughly, but the department exams are significantly harder than any example problems he goes through in class. You can't see your total grade during the semester because they curve heavily at the end but don't want you to know.
Dr. Gonzalez makes the most out of his class and spends ample time reviewing before the final exam. Practice worksheets given before the exams are extremely helpful. Although attendance is not mandatory, I highly recommend going as Dr. Gonzalez shows examples of how to do problems and earn points for exams.
Biggest god-complex I have ever seen, makes you feel stupid for asking a valid question. Patronizing, Very intimidating and uncomfortable to approach. Problems he goes over in class are WAY easier than what is seen on the exam. Difficult class by nature, take a Knecht if you can.
Not a good professor. Our class average was way lower than Khnects class. You will have to read the textbook a lot because he is bad at lecturing and doesnt care about whether his class fails or not.
Dr. Gonzalez is one of the best chemistry professors I have taken throughout my academic career. The class itself is not difficult, it just requires a lot of practice. If you do not practice, you will fail even if you have taken a higher level course back in high school (e.g. AP Chemistry, A-Level Chemistry, etc.) Concepts are important for organic
Dr. Gonzalez is hands down the BEST professor for gen chem at this school. Yes, the class is hard by nature but he explains the topics very well in lecture. As long as you put in the work, study, attend lectures, and do your homework youll be fine. He also makes himself very accessible outside of class. Love Cesar forever and always.
Dr. Gonzalez really cares about the success of his students and wants each of them to succeed. His lectures are outstanding and his test encompasses what he teaches in class. As long as you put in the work, youll be fine. Plus, hes just an overall genuine guy. Favorite professor at UM by far.
Honestly don't understand how he is allowed to teach orgo, he just straight up does not know how to teach this class correctly. He either completely omits things that are gonna be on the exam or literally teaches us the wrong information. If both of Knechts classes are full, just attend one of her lectures anyways if you can and take notes.
Class is easy, just a lot of practice, like every other chemistry course.
The amount of material needed to know for each exam is obscene. Be prepared to work extremely hard and dedicate a lot of time into this class. I recommend watching Melissa Maribel and the organic chemistry tutor on YouTube. Rewatching his lectures online is helpful. If you struggle with test anxiety, you should make timed practice tests.
I have no compliments abt professor gonzalez, chemistry just is what it is. the hw is time consuming and the weekend quizzes are annoying, tests take a lot of preparation and averages are typically low but if you put in the work and pay attention you can easily do well. he explains this well, but the textbook is a good resource to have.
chemistry is just hard and a lot of work no matter what but his lectures were good and I know he offered office hours. the homework is incredibly painful and lots of it, the weekend quizzes are never fun on a sunday, and the tests require hours worth of studying. you definitely have to put in the work to and outside resources to do well
Makes this class so much harder than it has to be, you're expected to dedicate almost an entire week of studying for each exam to get anything from a 70 to an 80 if you want anything more you will have to do alot of more. If you have the option please take leslie knecht. lectures are not great at all to the point that it is almost a waste of time
One of the best chemistry professors I have ever had. The class itself requires a lot of practice and if you do not practice and go to lectures, you will fail (even if you have taken AP Chemistry, Chm 110, etc.) DO THE HOMEWORK, ASK QUESTIONS, AND GO TO CLASS. He is a wonderful professor for CHM 121 and if you put the work in you will get an A.
Honestly this class is pretty difficult so get ready to put in lots of hours of studying into it. Overall, it is manageable if you put the work in, just try to get above average scores on the tests. Do all the homeworks and discussion quizzes AND GO TO OFFICE HOURS! There is also a pretty hefty curve at the end so don't be discouraged easily!
I had Dr. Gonzalez for HHMI labs and he was amazing! He always connected what we were doing in lab to what we were learning in CHM221 which was really helpful. He also explained why all the techniques we were learning were important, and was very organized!
Lectures are very packed with info and although not mandatory HIGHLY necessary to go. Gives some extra credit and drops some grades. HW is not too difficult and very helpful for review. Will apply curves. The class material itself is hard not going to lie, but if you study you will do fine. He is very happy to help and his extra helps are great.
If you took AP Chem, this class is a breeze. I took it when covid started, so there were some stuff I didn't learn, but he was able to cover it. Do the worksheets to practice for FRQ, homework to practice MCQ. I would say he's a good professor, makes his expectations very clear.
Good man. Gives great lectures, very clear. Don't be late to lectures, even by a few minutes. He has a online quiz type system at the beginning of class sometimes and does not tell you when they are. When taking exams, make sure you study thoroughly and know the relationships between all topics on the exams. I didn't take AP Chem and I did fine.
Refuses to answer studnet's questions because "he already went over it". This is one of the toughest classes in science disciplines and he doesn't give too much care to students. He explains topics in a very confusing manner. Not that any of the chem professors at UM are good. Stick to ur textbook to stay above water
Honestly very rude, he doesn't seem to care about his students at all. Classes are painful to sit through and the majority of the class never really knows what's going on. It takes a few hours to complete the homework. No one does well on the exams. I'm changing my major because of this class. Also he lovesssss iclicker.
The Dr Gonzales slander on here paints a false story of his teaching style. He gives you the real, conceptual info, that is needed to understand how org actually works. Gives real life examples and isn't simply trying to get you to memorize. Explains HOW ORGO WORKS. if you don't want to put in the work to understand chemistry you will complain.
I am currently taking CHM121 and am very disappointed. The exams are extremely difficult and the average has been very low for each one. Gonzalez lectures well but does not guide his students to success. I have studied for weeks prior to the exam and the results are not what I worked for. I recommend taking Leslie Knecht for CHM 121.
If you come to lectures and pay attention you will pass. Explains every topic so well, and gives worksheets to review before every exam. Highly reccommend.
Go to lectures and stay on top of the textbook
If you took AP chem this class is a walk in the park. Although Gonzalez can be rude and the class sometimes feels like a battle between him and his students rather than him working with them, if you study you'll be fine
This class was difficult due to the difficulty of this subject, this professor really attempted to ensure everyone understood what was being taught. If you've taken chemistry before, this should be simple, however if you didn't you need to go to EVERY lecture because he goes over so much in one period you'll fall behind.
I absolutely love Dr. Gonzalez. I was a little scared to take his class since his reviews weren't great, but he is the sole reason I passed orgo. He is always available to help, explains the topics thoroughly in class and does a lot of practice problems. 12/10 recommend him.
Gonzalez is AMAZING. He can make you feel a little dumb when you ask a question but that's the worse thing about him. He explains the material well and makes himself available to help you if you need it. He wants you to do well and expects you to put effort in. Take him over any other 221 prof. He isn't a bad prof, the class just requires effort.
Great professor for this course and tried to provide as many resources as possible to help us through a tough class. the exams are the same for everyone taking 121 and they were very difficult after the first exam. about a 7% curve added at the end which made the class very flexible as long as you stay above average. take every xc opp
Had other just as difficult classes taken with this, so my grade was entirely on me and I could've done better. The content is difficult, but he did a decent job at teaching, but the last half of the sem, I decided to depend on the textbook. If I didn't do textbook problems, I would've failed the class. Scoring higher than the average is the goal!
By far the best chemistry professor at UM, he is extremely organized, professional and intelligent. I had Dr. Gonzalez for Chem 121 and Chem 205. His courses are very challenging, but he is great and teaching and his methods are very effective. I wish I could have taken him for Chem 206.
By far the best chemistry professor at UM, he is extremely organized, professional and intelligent. I had Dr. Gonzalez for Chem 121 and Chem 221. His courses are very challenging, but he is great and teaching and his methods are very effective. I wish I could have taken him for Chem 222.
I very rarely openly talk badly about my teachers, but Cesar Gonzalez makes me hate him more and more every single class. He makes all his students feel dumb when they ask questions and talks down to us when we don't know the answers.
This class is tough! Prof. Gonzalez teaches the material well and he knows his stuff. He is a really good teacher and lecturer. He breezes through the easy stuff but takes his time on teaching the hard stuff, also does a lot of practice problems. He is a little blunt, so don't ask stupid questions and he doesn't really care if you pass or fail.
Dr. Gonzalez is a really amazing professor. He really cares about the success of his students and wants us to understand. He has really engaging lectures and provided us with lots of ways to practice. I would recommend taking Dr. Gonzalez for chemistry to anyone, he is really good at explaining it and very kind. I am really glad I took this class.
He's a great prof and really cares about his students. He's very accessible and encourages you to come to his office hours. Chem is a difficult subject but he is very good at explaining the material. 5 exams, lowest dropped and a final exam. Decent amount of homework but not too time consuming. Go to class because he does random iClickers.
Professor Gonzalez can be intimidating, but he is really great at teaching the material and he makes it clear how to do well in his class. He does iClicker so you wanna be there on those days to get points and attendance. Overall I feel like he does care about his students and if you do what he says studying wise you'll do great in his class.
I would recommend Dr.Gonzalez to anyone who actually wants to learn chemistry and not just get an easy A. Chemistry with Dr.Gonzalez will not be an easy A but he is the best Chemistry teacher. He explains concepts very well. There is lots of homework. Attendance isn't graded but he does iclicker questions randomly. I 100% recommend him over anyone.
Dr. Gonzalez was by far one of the best professors I have had the pleasure of getting to have for a course at UM so far. It was a very rigorous class in terms of homework, material and the exams schedule, but Dr. Gonzalez was always available to meet for extra help and truly enjoys what he teaches and his passion shows very clearly. Very good prof.
Great teacher, hard class. Very accessible during office hours. He doesn't care if you pass or fail, but if you want to pass, he will do his best to help you. Class moves very quickly. Most people who do well previously took AP chem.
I LOVE THIS MAN. He is the goat. I took AP Chem so this class was definitely easier for me but I still had to put in some effort to get the grade I wanted. Cesar's lectures are super clear and it is obvious he wants you to do well. Go to office hours, they are very helpful. Tests are fair and you should do fine if you understand the material well.
Tests are standard for all chem sections and generally suck, but this is the best professor you can get. His explanations are great, and he is super accessible outside of class. Very caring of your understanding and will go step by step through each example. He makes sure you are ready for tests and records lectures. Very nice guy overall.
He discusses levite material clearly, but CHM103 moves at a very slow pace. The textbook is required to do homework, and he takes attendance randomly for a grade. Overall easy class.
CHM121 is very fast-paced, but I'm sure Dr. Gonzalez is the best professor to take it with. He explains the material really well and goes over practice problems in class that are very similar to the ones in the homework and tests. Tests are hard but they're standard to the department so regardless of the professor you'll have to put in some effort.
Very fast paced class and Cesar is the best teacher to take it with. He can come off as arrogant but is really just passionate. This class is difficult regardless of who you take it with but Cesar explains things well, responds to emails almost immediately, and is very helpful out of class if you reach out.
Good professor totally normal overall.
Hard class, good teacher. You need to want it in order to get an A
Dr. Gonzalez is the BEST professor to take for this course. I won't lie, the course itself is difficult because the University makes general chemistry one class rather than two separate courses like they do in other schools. If you genuinely study and go to his office hours you should be fine. Taking CHM110 before this helped me.
Pls take Cesar for orgo if you get the chance! He makes organic chemistry make sense. The grade that you get is completely what you are willing to put in. Cesar wants all his students to be masters and his office hours are very helpful. Do ALL the textbook problems, they are your best friend for preparing for tests. Hard class but doable with Mo.
I wanted to give Prof. Gonzalez a lower rating because I didn't get an A. But honestly, he is an amazing lecturer and the best professor you can take for this course. CHM121 is inherently difficult and there isn't much you can do about it. you just have to study a LOT because the tests are extremely difficult for the whole department.
I think this class is hard in general, but I feel like Cesar was not the best professor to take for this class.
Very hard class, five exams (lowest dropped) and a final. iClicker is a portion of grade so make sure you attend so you are there for when he uses it occasionally. Very accessible professor and cares for his students and wants them to succeed. Truly the best professor for CHM121, he knows the course is hard but tries to help as much as he can. 5/5!
Cesar is the best orgo professor at UM. Take him!! He truly cares about the success of his students and will do everything in his power to help them succeed. With that being said, orgo is a hard class and you have to put in the work. Go to office hours and workshops!!!
Took him for both orgo classes because he is that amazing. I was able to do the 5 week CHM 222 summer class with no problem. He is the best professor I have ever had. Inspired me to get a PHD in chemistry. TAKE HIM!
I think he is one of the best chem professors at UM. He is very accessible and will always help you improve and understand the material.
Great professor. It's a hard class but Dr. Gonzalez helps you understand. Go to his office hours!! He really funny and wants to get to know his students. He'll answer all your questions and makes sure you understand during office hours. Replies fast to emails.
Overall, a solid chem professor, but some of the homework felt unnecessary and iClicker is just really annoying. He's a pretty good lecturer though at least. Tests are difficult, but doable if you study a lot. After taking other chem professors though, he's def one of the better ones.
CHM121 is an extremely difficult course that requires a lot of work and time. Mr Gonzalez does a great job of teaching the information and is very thorough in more complicated topics. The tests are hard but I highly recommend going to workshops as they helped a lot. He does take attendance randomly. Overall, great teacher and would take him again.
CHM121 is a challenging course, but Professor Gonzalez is a great teacher who genuinely cares about student success. Attend lectures, use the free textbook, and try unstuck AI for study prep - it really helps.
Dr. Gonzalez is a great professor. If you have any problems with the material he is very accesible and down to help you. Even after taking his class for gen chem, he is accesible. I've been back to ask about orgo material and rec letters and he has kept his door to me and other peers who've had him in the past.
I've had Cesar for 121, 221, and now 222. He is a great teacher and does a great job lecturing (aka. I never had to read the textbook to supplement). This class was not easy but fair. Use his office hours to your advantage! They are very helpful and he explains Orgo so well! He records lecture which is nice. Overall, caring person; def take him!
Dr Gonzalez is not only the best professor in the chemistry department but also the most helpful human at umiami. Truly wants his students to succeed. Had him for CHM 103, CHM 121 and about to have him for CHM 222. Take this professor if you can! All the bad reviews are written by students who didn't put the work in and expected an A. Hes the best
Dr. Gonzalez is a great professor who is very knowledgeable and caring. He is the best in the department for gen chem! He stays after class to answer questions, records lectures, and posts recaps of every class. Classes are efficient, you cover tons of material and do practice problems in between. This course is very time consuming though.
Dr. Gonzalez was great for this lab (HHMI). Super clear instructions, was helpful in lab and pushed us to do well. Not overly difficult and the lab paper wasn't too hard, but the grading was a bit confusing for it.
This class is naturally hard, but Dr. Gonzalez is very thorough and explains all the concepts in an engaging way. He is also readily available right after lectures and through office hours. His explanations were incredibly helpful, and I don't think I would've done as well in this class if it wasn't for the way he taught the course.
He is an amazing teacher and thoroughly explained all of the material. He made chem very doable and I'm taking him next semester for orgo. Go to class because he takes attendance through iClicker sometimes and show up on time because he sometimes calls people out.
Best chem professor for organic chemistry. His lectures are dense but his slides are very organized. You can't escape the fact that orgo is a lot of work outside of class but his office hours are key to practicing content. Do the textbook problems!
Dr. Gonzalez is the man! I had him in the spring of 2024. Lecture is heavy but necessary for good grade. OFFICE HOURS!!! Make up practice exam questions. UNDERSTAND THE PATTERNS. You will be fine if you try to assess the difficult parts of each chapter and practice practice practice. Read the textbook for supplemental.
The class itself was hard but if you go to lectures and study a good amount for the tests, it isn't too bad. He gave so many in class examples that prepared and overprepared you for the tests. He goes fast but as long as you go to the lectures, you'll be able to keep up. Use the textbook for practice problems. Retook him for chm 221.
I would recommend taking Cesar's class to anyone. I had a great experience, he is extremely passionate about chemistry and truly wants all his students to succeed. Go to his office hours if you are confused!! He tries to make lectures fun and is sassy at times. Always a good time with Cesar! TAKE HIM!
Cesar is actually the boy and he catches way too much flack on here from people who don't work hard. Chem is obviously gonna be difficult, but if you go to class and discussion, you will be fine. Redo all of the homeworks and practice problems before tests and use old tests to practice. Cesar makes chemistry make sense.
He's actually so great! Teaches fast but Chemistry is like that, just do all the homework, go to lectures and discussions are you'll be fine. He knows his stuff and is really funny. Study using past homework questions and class examples. 5 exams but worst is dropped. He really cares for his students and wants them to succeed if you put in the work.
I loved the way Gonzales teaches! The class is very easy to go along with, and he practices problems over and over. He wants everyone to pass, and as long as you attend every lecture, the tests are pretty easy. best Chem 121 teacher here and also very accessible outside of class with office hours. If you want to pass easily, take him!
Cesar is a good professor, but you have to do everything yourself. It is a lot of work that you have to be prepared to put in to get an A. It doesn't sound as bad now but it would take up a lot of your free time and stuff you take for granted. He is a good teacher though and is willing to help, a little sassy though.
This professor isn't bad, but the class is just hard and he goes through the material fairly quick. There aren't really any other great options, though, so taking him is not a bad choice. Prepare to teach yourself, though.
Dr. Gonzalez is one of the best chemistry professors at UM, I took him for both 121 and 221. Both courses are hard, but he makes it easy to follow along and doesn't go too fast or slow. As with any other chm course, you have to study hard and put in the work. But he is def your best option, if I could take him for 222 I would too.
I like to think of the burn book from mean girls when I think of Cesar. He actually makes it so hard for no reason. If you aren't religious, pick one and pray. idk.
Professor Gonzalez was an okay professor. Though he was available, he was not much help to me. If you plan on taking his course and have never taken chemistry be warned. I attended every class, two tutors a week, outside workshops, and every discussion available and still barely managed to pass exams. This class requires a lot of outside work.
everyone should know that around half of the class dropped this course… so many people were failing and there are still people failing. The only people who like him are students who have taken chemistry before. If you haven't taken chem.. haha good luck.
The literal goat. I don't get the hate on Caesar. I've never met a man more passionate about orgo at 8am 3x a week. Makes u want to learn orgo. This class was hard but there r so many resources like camner, workshops, office hours. He goes super fast but he genuinely wants u to succeed. Actually devastated he's not teaching orgo2 next sem.
I took him for CHM121 and I was expecting it to be super hard, but it actually turned out fine. The homework and lecture are very similar to the exam questions. As long as you do the homework and spend a couple of hours studying each week, you should be fine. Definitely recommend the optional workshops at least once a week. Those were so great!
Dr. Gonzalez explains material clearly and is helpful outside of class. CHM 121 is hard, so stay on top of lessons. Many students drop the course, but if you keep up and ask for help, you can succeed.
Although he was available outside of lecture, it was hard to get 1-on-1 time with him since everyone was confused. It was the hardest class I have ever taken. DO NOT take this class unless necessary to get your degree. Study the textbook problems and pray. Workshops were the most helpful for me. Find a good workshop leader and keep going.
The nature of the class is that it's difficult, which is not the fault of the professor. Reviews outside of class were super helpful and were a major contributor in understanding the material. Explains things really well and gives questions that are good prep for the test.
Can't say he's horrible but can't say he's great either. The only extra credit was worth 0.05%... Exams are worth 60% of your grade & no scores get dropped. barely any practice done in class or provided besides textbook. Attendance via iclicker. Homework is pretty useless when it comes to exam material. Retook class w/ Leslie and passed w/ an A.
This is a great option for an intro to chemistry professor. It is graded mostly by five midterms (the lowest dropped) and a final, which amounts to 75% of your grade. The lectures are fine, but the homework is where you'll learn the best. Overall, I enjoyed my experience in this class, just make sure to study hard for the exams.
Honestly orgo kinda sucks but I took it with Cesar knowing that he was a great lecturer for gen chem. Super thorough, and gave a lot of practice and explanations in lectures. He'll answer questions after class too (very helpful). Definitely do textbook problems and go to workshops. Orgo is hard but if you go to class and practice, you'll be good.
I loved Dr. Gonzalez! I had to withdraw was bc I was taking the summer course & they fit 15 weeks worth of material into 5. I was working so I didn't have the time to keep up with the pace. Dr. G gives you everything you need to succeed and always checks in on you. I am taking the course in the fall with him and I'm so excited! I know I'll succeed
Class is tough, but he is the best professor, in my opinion.
The worst chemistry professor in the world. He makes everything way more difficult than it needs to be and I would not recommend.
He's just okay. I personally found him pretty rude even when I went to office hours and tried to get to know him. He's a good teacher and the content was easy to understand but I wouldn't want to have to deal with him again.
Consists of 5 midterms & a final, 15% each (1 midterm dropped). Exams are hard, but Gonzalez well prepares u. Practice problems are a MUST to do well, plus going over his slides and redoing homework problems. He's a great teacher and pushes you to do well, but he does move fast so stay on track. Taking him for orgo, liked him a lot.
I think he is one of the best professors in the department, he teaches stuff really well and is willing to help if you put in the time and effort. Obviously the class is hard. He can get a bit sassy and mean at times but he really pushes you to do your best and wants you to succeed.
if you plan on losing weight, clumps of hair and breaking out from the tears you'll shed, take this class next semester because i promise you the academic stress will keep you full, hairless and depressed (im on lexapro now).
As a professor, Cesar genuinely is one of the better ones in the chemistry department. The course is hard. You will work pretty hard for your A. Cesar makes the course digestible; his office hours genuinely help. Do know, he is a sassy guy, he is a sarcastic guy. It is in his personality, and it is nothing against you.
I feel for Cesar. Within the Chem department, he's one of the best, and CHM121 is already a very tough course. Everyone hates on him when they don't succeed, but I personally think he's a good guy, solid lecturer, and his office hours were pretty helpful. I still wholeheartedly believe he's the best option for 121, and one of the best for 221.
Cesar is my favorite prof here. Orgo is a very difficult class and after struggling in gen chem, I was very nervous but I ended with an A+! His lectures were great (recorded) and we were always ahead of other sections = more time to review. Go to office hours - life changing and helpful. Do textbook problems. Also hes available for 1/1 appts. #king
If you pre med you not gonna be no longer after taking this.
Dr. Gonzalez is one of the best profs here. He's hilarious when you get to know him. People hate because chem at UM is ridiculously hard. You can't pass without practicing every day. Dr. G is the best lecturer though, and his student hours are VERY helpful. GO TO THEM. His office hours are for group discussion, not just questions, so no excuses.
This class was really hard. However, not impossible. Cesar was the best professor for CHM121 and CHM221 in my opinion. For those who are taking CHM221, this class will test your discipline, endurance, consistency, time management skills etc. I got a 98% on one of the exams by just purely doing practice problems over and over. Good luck.
Cesar is literally the best teacher for this class. This class is hard with averages on test always 65% or below but your best chance of doing well is with this teacher. Also stay ahead because its very easy to get behind in this class.
I am Cesar's #1 defender. Gen chem is annoying no matter what, but there was never a time I felt the class was impossible. To study, redo the hw (sometimes hw qs are on the exams), do as many old exams as you can get, and make sure you're able to do ALL of the ex questions he gives in class. He is by FAR the best prof u could have for this class
I had Cesar for gen chem and orgo and he was such a great teacher for both, probably the best option. Orgo is hard in general but he teaches the material so throughly. Also, there are orgo workshops that benefit yourself so much, so take advantage of them. He is also available outside of class and wants to help you succeed in this class.
Dr. Gonzalez knows his topics very well, in my opinion however, there is too much material to cover in Chem 221, to the point where all of nomenclature is expected to be learned outside of class. His lectures flow VERY quickly, with little time for questions. For a class as difficult as Structure and Dynamics, i would avoid Dr. Gonzalez.
CHM 221 is a hard class to teach and to learn, but I'm really glad I took it with Dr. Gonzalez. He is very passionate, and does his best to really make sure his students understand the topic. His office hours and appointments were extremely helpful. If you want to do well, you really just have to put in the work outside of class
CHM 221 is already a hard class in it of itself. After Knecht, Gonzalez is your best chance at succeeding. Yes, he is sassy. Yes, sometimes he pulls out random stuff on tests, but honestly if you really dedicate your time and use the resources provided (workshop, office hours, 1 on 1, etc..) you can succeed by teaching yourself the material.
Chemistry is never easy, regardless of the professor. You must teach yourself; if you won't, consider changing your major or dropping. Don't rely on AI for homework—honest hard work is the only way. Crucially, you must get access to past exams to study. If you're dedicated, you'll earn that B at best lol maybe a B+
