Shakespear class. She goes through the books with the class and translates for you! Always willing to help out. Research paper was also pretty good.

Excellent teacher. Challenging course. A must for anyone wanting to truly understand Shakespeare.
Dr. Abartis was the best English teacher in my entire career, and it is thanks to her that I survived graduate school. She teaches writing by teaching literature, and she is remarkable. She is the reason I am an English teacher today. Take her if you can.
Very fun class
Myth and Legend class was annoying and boring. Read Homer outside of class and you'll enjoy yourself a lot more. Required attendance just makes me angry.
For Shakespeare, she was great!! Creative Writing? Not so much. She's in a tough department, though.
Taught the class like we were 5 year olds. "Can you say Lucentio" "One more time" "ONE MORE TIME!"
Not a fair grader, and not a good teacher for an introductory course. I don't even smile when I pass her on campus.
im in college, not 6...dont teach me like i am...have some respect for student athletes who turn in all their work before a contest...dont hold the fact that they a representin scsu across the country...horrible prof, unless you wanna be undermined
I thought she was ok but many of my fellow students despised her.
She was a pretty fun professor. A little absent minded at times but the class was easy- a nice break from the stresses of other classes. I would recommend her!
I liked Prof. Abartis, this class was large so we only took quizzes and had no outside of class work to do. Very easy and no busy work class!
I totally agree w/everyone else...she makes you feel like you're a kid. The class started out all right and then got really boring and annoying and I started to dread going. She left for 3 days and made us have the class without her!! That was ridiculous.:(
It was a very good class if you are interested in mythology, but I think it was hard for her to handle such a large class. As long as you do the readings, the tests will be alright. Attendance wasn't required for this course, which is a plus, because her lectures were pretty boring and not helpful
She was a great teacher - I majored in English and she was one of my best. She made Shakespeare's works very easy to understand - not an easy feat! She also had a great sense of humor (maybe the undereducated don't understand it) and was very personable.
She has such an interesting outlook on life and she is always so helpful. The class is super easy if you read the reading, which are very interesting. She is always interested in hearing everyone's opinions. I liked her class
I think she's a good, sweet lady with good intentions but I feel somewhat smarter than the way we were taught. I did the reading so class was redundant for me, can we say college level??? But she really does care about what she is teaching and it's easy to get a good grade.
She's ok, but kind of boring. We would basically reread the assigned pages in class to fill up time. Her assignments were easy, but she graded harder on the essays. Maybe try someone else.
Boring as all hell. Every class was like the plague. Attendance is graded to highly. I never wanted to go to the class, because it was so boring. She basically re-read everything she assigned. If your a boring type of a person you would probably love her.
I have a special place in my heart for Dr. Abartis. She's a sweet and classy lady who is who has written a great book of short stories ("Good Girls and Other Stories). I didn't receive the best grade (B-, I think), but my "muse" wasn't exactly active at the time...
A bit boring in class when we read outloud, but very helpful in teaching of fiction writing. Always willing to spend extra time outside of class. Many useful exercises for triggering writing ideas.
Avoid for Shakespeare, tends to go on tangents that are unhelpful. Also, papers seem unnecessary, and other assignments are pointless.
Great writer, great person! Students are lucky to have the chance to work with her.
Excellent prof. To good for SCSU. Most of the time, she is beyond most of her students in intelligence. Those who find her boring are not paying attention.
She's ok, but every week we do the same exercises that are not helpful. She doesn't actually do any teaching when it comes to writing. She doesn't help you enrich your writing, she just gives you hundreds of pointless prompts. There are better creative writing profs out there (klepetar, berks, olson)
Pretty boring, but easy, class. She doesn't grade the daily work, and she grades the papers really well.
She's an okay prof. She's not clear on what she expects in regards to papers. The tests are difficult, but if you read the plays, then you should manage a decent grade. She has a tendency to get side-tracked; you ask her a question and her response is to read (aloud) from the play...needless to say, questions are rarely answered satisfactorily.
Don't get my wrong, she is a NICE lady...but has a hard time gathering her thoughts and is confusing with her expectations for assignments. It's a pretty low work load, but is a tough grader for papers and tests. Class time is useless as well. You just read through scenes from the play...which you already read before hand...thus, pointless.
She is a little crazy. Very easy to get her off topic. If you can't remember quotes from chapter books don't take it.
She tests you on quotes and all the books you read have the same characters
She's not very helpful when it comes to questions. Classes tend to get boring and long. Is not clear on what she expects for assignments. Forgets to collect papers, then marks them a day late.
I don’t want to watch the movie; I don’t care what the guy in the corner thinks; I am paying this money to learn something from the “expert.” She gives you handouts on how to write better papers, but not on things that would deepen your understanding of the play. Maybe if she actually taught something in the class we would have better papers.
You can learn more for having a 10 minute conversation with Hibbard or anyone else who teaches Shakespeare.
Doesn't help you, goes off in rants and is a crazy koot. take it with hibbard
If you don't do the reading she will read it to you. She is more concerned about how you write than what you learn about Shakepeare. She is patronizing. I'll give her credit for a unique sense of humor, but when she cleans her office she needs to go home and play her garden.
Very sweet lady but I think she could be much more demanding in her expectations. Still, I enjoyed her class immensely, and learned a lot about Shakespeare. She's very helpful if you have questions and her suggestions for improvements in your writing are dead-on accurate. I would recommend her.
Hm, this class doesn't seem much more "advanced" than the intro to fiction class. She's very nice, but tends to give you advice that will make your stories cheesy. It sucks that we have to write responses to HER short stories; you almost feel like you have to like them. Overall, she's a decent professor and it's obvious that she loves what she does
She is extremely boring. She's nice and tries to help when you have a question (seems to be a little slow understanding what is being asked) though. Class was often spent with her summarizing the reading assignment which if you're doing the work is pointless and boring. Daily reactions to the reading assignments get quite tedious.
(Shakespeare)Mandatory attendance, 4 days a week. She is a very easy grader. Daily journals.4 papers. Most classes were spent reading outloud or watching the movie of the play that we read. Overall, I would reccomend this prof. She loves what she does.
One of the worst classes I have ever taken in my college carrer. She requires way too much work and is exteremly technical. If you can avoid her fiction class do so. It was horrible. She might be fine in lit classes, but fiction was so bad. Do not take unless you want a bad grade on your paper for bad grammar. Plays favorites not a good thing.
Should lose her tenure status. One of the worst profs I have ever had. Her grading system makes no sense.
Stay away.
stay as far away from this useless professor...she tells you over and over that your writing should develop with age but expects you to write as if you're a scholar. attendance is mandatory and all you ever do is read out loud to one another and you're not allowed to step out of the room. you learn nothing in this class! she needs to retire!!
avoid. arbitrarily critical. her collection of short stories is a required text...? seriously.
Ms. Abartis is definately my favorite professor this semester. We take tests on all of our readings (ex. after 4 classes of reading Iliad we take a test). There are a total of 8 tests and she goes over all readings in class, and everything else you need to know for tests. It's basically handed to you.
Mumbles to herself, plays major favorites and never answers a question, just says "lets look at the book"
Avoid her if at all possible. Her attendance system is rediculous. Miss one day she'll dock you 50 pts or whatever she feels like. Did all my homework, got an A on everything but missed 5 days and she took off 200 points of my grade. Worst Prof.
Not the greastest professor and I have had her for a little over a month. mumbles, is not very clear, and is not good at all for passing back tests she just makes us watch movies and then tries to call out all the names..
Very boring class, sat at listened to her mumble for most of the class. If you do your readings you'll get an a easily but you also have to attend which sucks.
Nice teacher. You need to have an interest in her courses obviously to find them at least a little exciting. She does ramble on in class about the readings, but that's what the class is; reading and talking about the books. Very easy A and not that boring. You get what you sign up for.
Goes over all material right before tests. Easy tests. Wonderful happy helpful little old lady.
Easy A if you follow her simple and reasonable instructions(keep up with the reading).Enjoyable to attend class and listen if you like to read literature and discuss it. She has very wise insights if you pay attention to the rambling, and you can tell she loves it. Tip: She seems to greatly appreciates students whom are animated and ask questions.
Prof Abartis is alright, I guess. She mumbles a lot and its extremely hard to pay attention. Her tests are pretty difficult if you do not pay attention or attend classes. However, if you take a large class of hers she does not assign any homework or papers all semester!
Abartis is very dull. She speaks in a monotone voice and speaks very slowly which makes the time go by even slower. If you take her try to take a 50 minute class. She teaches on grammar in class but does not teach anything on the subject which is her biggest downside. No tests, just papers though which is nice. And lots of readings.
Abartis teaches a lot of grammar and it is very repetitve. Her class is boring although the material is interesting at times. No tests, all papers--which is bad because she is a hard grader when it comes to papers.
A lot of your grade is dependent on writing--which is bad because she is a hard grader. Class is sometimes dull, lots of worksheets.
She is a good teacher, aside from some rambling. Easy attendance points and you read some really interesting stuff. Also, she talks about whats in the test before you take it. Highly recommended, I had a lot of fun and I learned a lot in this class
She has a very quiet voice, but she loves what she teaches. Her enthusiasm rubs off on you. As long as you go to class, you'll do well in the class.
She hands out a lot of papers with grammar, very nice teacher, decent grader, is willing to help.
She was a very nice lady. However, unless you have the high interest in the topic, you will be wasting your time and money in her class.
Very nice lady, loves what she does. The books we read in this class were boring for the most part but using sparknotes helps a lot and you can get A's on tests by just reviewing that and going to class. Class is not mandatory but you get points for going.. have 4 absences without losing points.
Very boring class. Goes through each reading everyday. Very monotone and hard to pay attention. Grade is out of 1000. 900 points for exams (takes best 6 of 8) that are multiple choice 20 questions. Other 100 points is from attendence.
Boring but an easy A if you do the homework or just look up book summaries online. Not a terrible class but I never enjoyed going and usually left early.
Very boring, but easy class. She spends most of the class time reading through the book and explaining each and every sentence. She gave eight tests (including final) and dropped the lowest 2 scores. Test are 20 point multiple choice. A lot of the questions were "who said this quote" or "who did this thing" type questions.
Very, extremely boring class. She constantly mumbles and makes everyone in class read. Grade is determined by 10% attendance and 90% tests. 6 of 8 highest test grades each 20 points and 20 questions. Material covered was: Shakespeare, All Quiet on WF, Tartuffe, a few others and many poems. I would not recommend taking this professor.
Worst professor I have ever had! Do not take if you intend to maintain high GPA. I am mechanical engineering and I have never met with such a boring like her. In class, watch movies, outside of class, lots of reading and essays. Essays are not hard, but she never gives lower than C's which made half of the class drop Avoid her please. worst teacher
Please do not take with her. There are other great professors
Please avoid her in all ways!!!!
This useless women made my gpa low for no reason at all. Avoid her all the time. Very bad instructor! doesn't know how to teach and never gives you a good no matter how "A" student you're. I am an A students, never got lower A in college, but she always gives bad grades for no reason. STAY AWAY FORM HER PLEASE.
I was so pumped to take this class...until the very first day. The professor is a lecturer , but is not interactive with the class. If you're looking for a class that's so easy and boring you can just sit on your phone, take it with this prof. If you want to actually learn something, then don't.
The worst instructor ever! Never take a class with her. Very arrogant!
All I could say is THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER! I would never recommend her!
Abartis certainly loves the topic she teaches but when we have to read for homework and then spend a majority of time rereading it with little to no clarification of what is happening it's infuriating. She cares more about about grammar in papers than your ideas and opinions. She loves to say she's an easy grader but don't be fooled.
I really loved all the books we read, and we read them at a good pace. There were WAY too many poems. She is nice, but really old and really crazy. Her lectures were super longboring, but the tests are EASY. There are 8 (includes final) and you get 2 drops (also includes final). They are all 20 mult. choice questions. Only other grade-attendance.
If you do not perform well on the tests, you won't get a good grade. simple as that. I went to her numerous of times for clarity and even help, and she practically said "too bad" about my grade.
Look, I really did want to like this class.. My friend and I signed each other in often. She has fairly simple tests (8 in total, 20 questions each) but the dumb thing is, she asks very unimportant questions that can easily be found on SparkNotes so reading is unimportant, she is VERY boring and seemed to not understand how to teach? DO NOT TAKE
This course was very boring but definitely an easy grade if you do the readings. We only had 8 exams and she drops the 2 lowest. There are 4 books. If you do the readings, you will receive a decent grade.
Has you read before class then somewhat covers the material the next day. Sit in the front otherwise you won't hear a thing. Genuinely nice lady. You have to pay attention though to pick up on the vocab words (she will put on the quizzes). And actually watch the videos- she will include them in the quizzes. Just remember what you read.
Her lectures are very long and boring, but the class itself is fairly easy as long as you do the readings and keep up with assignments. She mumbles a lot and isn't very clear, but she can help you if you need it.
She's very nice and has good intentions, but I would avoid taking her at all costs. There are 3 tests in this class and it's ALL poetry questions. Her grading on papers is terrible. She doesn't care about quotations or the quality of the work. She basically grades on grammar, and random things. She doesn't give real feedback that helps.
Easy class if you just do the readings.
There are 8 quizzes, 20 questions. Pretty much the whole quiz is quotes, so if you don't read, you probably won't do as well as you'd like. When talking about poems, she pretty much takes each line and tells the class what it means. This would usually lead her to talking about that one thing until there's about 10-20 minutes of class...
I think she is a very nice person but not the greatest teacher. She tends to be very long winded and explain things to a point that's way beyond what's necessary. The tests were very easy. I got an A- as a final grade because I couldn't drag myself to class sometimes and the only grades were tests and attendance. Rough semester.
So with HONS 160 you're graded on 3 things: 25% Attendance, 15% Research Exercises, 60% Essays/Research Paper. There is an awesome ExCr Op worth up to 4.5% more on you're total grade. This being said, average C's on all the papers and do everything else on time and you'll get an A. Lectures boring, Shakespeare kinda interesting. Take a diff. class.
There are eight tests in the course, and they will include lots of content. They will include questions on poems that were touched on for 15 minutes. I'm not a reader, myself, but I was on the verge of passing the course, because the tests are hard. Abartis is a really kind professor, but once she gets to know you, be ready to answer a lot of Q's.
Worst class I have ever taken. Will never take a class from this professor again. Read all the material and still continued to fail the tests. Puts random questions on some of the tests. Youre only graded on 8 tests and then 10% attendance. 2 tests are dropped so youre really only graded on 6 tests. Professor was also not that accessible.
Took this as a summer online class and joined a week and half late and had to immediately drop. Assigns daily work that is almost impossible. Daily work took me about 2-3 hours a night and is due by midnight. If you have a summer job, you won't have time for this class. I worked about 10 hours a day in the summer, and had no time finish assignments
Not clear on her grading. Not very organized, lots going on at once.
She's very, very particular about essays. Even students working at the writing center have issues. When she gives you a sheet on conciseness you need to follow it to a T. She's a nice person but her classes are legitimately awful. Stay clear.
Literature is not my favorite subject, but Professor Abartis made it a little interesting. You read a lot and the tests are kind of worded difficultly. If you go to class, pay attention to what she is talking about and read the books you won't have any problem getting a good grade. She explains each part of every book.
Overall, our grade consisted of attendance and six out of the eight tests/quizzes. Honestly, I'm not quite sure if half the people in my class actually read the books. She reads the important parts out loud and stresses what will be on the test so this class is pretty straightforward.
You have to read each book for a good grade; it also helps to summarize each chapter in each book after you've read it. Some questions on quizzes are from videos that she plays while she lectures. There's also only quizzes so you have to do good on the quizzes or else you'll get a bad grade. I took this as a PSEO student and I found it difficult.
Spring 2019 PSEO. MUST READ & come 2 class! Quizzes have specific parts of the book (determine who said a specific quote). She also verbally says things that can't be found in the book but will be in the quiz. I didn't have time to read anything but online summaries. Don't do that. I wouldn't have passed with an A if it wasn't for COVID.
Oh, my word there is so much work. Insanely tough grader. She made me go to The Write Place, and they said they didn't know why I got such a bad grade on my paper. Don't take unless you have to!!!!
Very hard on grading papers. Does not give feedback on what you did wrong and uses the ACT rubric for grading papers. Would not take classes with this professor unless you have to.
I did everything and stayed on course in this class, yet still got a D+. This is the first class I have ever failed. Ever. She is the toughest grader I have ever had in my life. The exercises aren't helpful, her feedback makes no sense, and it was a waste of money.
I was absolutely terrified when I received my first essay comments and grades from her. I thought I would have to withdraw the class! As I progressed through the semester, her feedback helped me raise my grade on the next three essays. Get ready for lots of discussion posts/replys and a 35 page syllabus if you take her online course though.
Fall 2020 PSEO I had trouble finding the zoom link, which wasn't a big deal, she always recorded the meeting and sent it via email to everyone. Just be prepared for A LOT of reading, and not books you choose. Classics like A Midsummer Night's Dream, All Quiet On The Western Front, Tartuffe, etc. The class and tests were overall really easy.
I took this class as a requirement for my degree and I had to withdraw from it. I was struggling and I reached out for help numerous times. The last time I reached out the conversation ended with "I don't know how to help you" and immediately after I went and withdrew. I found her very unprofessional, the equivalent class at SCTCC with Weseloh 100%
I honestly enjoyed the classics being read in class, and I think that the passion for the works is definitely reflected by the professor. The lectures can become sort of monotonous at times with reading from the text but the table always remained open for class participation and discussion. The test are a large part of your grade so be prepared.
As a PSEO student, this class is honestly pretty easy if you read, which is something I didn't do. Professor Abartis is very passionate about lit, but the class was difficult because no one cared as much as she did. There was a lot of time spent in silence because no one ever answered her questions. The tests are quite difficult and detail oriented.
Lectures were slow and long because she tended to ramble about unimportant things. discussions and replies due before class were doable however we were reading 50 pages in two days at times. Only thing you are really going to need to do well is the tests and they are very easy if you can pay attention to the books. Try not to fall asleep!
Majority (75%) of your grade is based on 3 papers, and she is a very tough grader; she will deduct points if she thinks a single word of a sentence is unnecessary or could have been replaced with a synonym she finds more fit. Did not personally teach the class, everything you learn is from a link to a website or a poorly written "style guide."
Took her Shakespeare class because it was a requirement for my degree, super tough grader especially on papers. No clear guidance on expectations for papers either. Tests were multiple choice but most questions were quotes from the plays and asking who said what or to whom something was said. Will be avoiding in the future.
The class was pretty simple, you read a book and have a test every other week. The tests were pretty difficult and were often asked who said what. She does not work with technology and has somebody run her D2L site so it can be hard to reach out to her. Overall the class is pretty easy.
Attendance is extra credit, but you need to come in for test days. This is an easy class. But you'll be bored out of your mind. I'm not sure this professor's teaching for much longer, but she tends to ramble, and the way she teaches is repetitive and doesn't spark much interest. You can just read the material outside of class, come for tests.
I did not find this course academically beneficial. It's 'Shakespeare I,' and a required course for my major. The course description simply read, "The histories, comedies, and tragedies." The course grade hinged on two papers that she graded (without providing a rubric) as if it were a masters-level writing course. It made me loathe Shakespeare.
I took this class simply for the credit, and to also learn more about Shakespeare. I was very disappointed to find that this class was extremely difficult, especially when it came to essays. I was sent to the writing center to bump my grade up, and the people there were confused, saying that there wasn't anything that needed to be changed.
She openly said she was very disappointed in our papers, both in an announcement and in class. All we do is read outside of class and then read in class; there are no parts where learning is happening. We just recite who said what, and when.
