Good professor. Sometimes he went into too much detail, but was always willing to answer questions and to clarify points. The tests were challenging, as was the final project. However, I feel like I learned a lot from the course.
Brock's time management in class is horrible we are already four classes behind. Our first test average was a 59 and he refuses to curve it. He takes inspiration from Fischer but even she curves and her tests are easier. There are also pop quizzes. He gives some extra credit. Don't take him unless you plan on sitting in his office hours all day.
chad is an interesting critter. you will literally not learn a thing unless you go to his office hours (all of the important content is taught there) he begs us to come and ask questions, then makes you feel bad for asking. some extra credit, REFUSES TO CURVE and no partial credit whatsoever, and our exam averages are all well below failing. DONT!!
Never gotten below an A until this guy. I can't make office hours and he refused to help me in other ways. Discouraging when you get things wrong. Wants you to fail, makes fun of students who are confused. Saves good teaching for office hours. Worst professor I've ever had - not a good teacher, rude, and insensitive. Hate him and will be retaking.
Do not take him unless you want to dedicate your whole life to reading from a textbook and spend hours on one textbook homework problem. He doesn't teach in lectures - atleast not what he tests on. Only teaches in office hours that I can't attend due to other classes - so basically no point in even going to class. Would not recommened.
His lectures are the most bare minimum information that you need to know and then expects you to do homework problems that he can't even do in a timely fashion. If you actually want to learn all the important information is in his office hours and if you can't make it, don't expect to do well in his class. Tests are very hard and cannot complete.
BIO325 is a disaster. The lectures are minimal and unhelpful, leaving students unprepared for ridiculously difficult exams. The professor is condescending, mocks students, and offers no support. With harsh grading and no partial credit, it's a course designed to crush your spirit. Avoid it at all costs!
Tests are 70%, first test average was a 57 and he refused to curve it and blamed it on the students. You only learn how to do problems if you go to office hours where he gets through 2 questions in 90 mins, then expects you to answer 20 questions in 50 mins on the test… also is the rudest professor I've ever had. Gonna lose my 4.0 as a junior
Chad's teaching is ineffective; lectures are the bare minimum and not at all similar to test questions. The average exam score was just 59%, with no curves. He blamed it on us instead. He rushes through lectures and mocks you whenever you ask a question. If you don't go to the office hours (because we have class btw) you will fail.
Absolutely do not take him. Worse than Fischer but even she curves her tests. This is the worst class I've ever taken in my life. Bald and mean to students.
Chad's tests are nearly impossible to finish on time, and there's no grading curve. Even when the average is well below failing. He mocks students for incorrect answers, or asking questions. Overall, if you value support and a fair grading system, you might want to look elsewhere because Chad Brock is definitely not it.
NEVER in my life have I had a professor that makes you feel bad when you ask questions. Chad has a curriculum that makes no sense. No keys are posted for the practice problems unless we go to office hours, BUT even then he refuses to solve some problems. His lectures don't prepare you at all and exams are difficult and long. DON'T TAKE!!
All the other reviews basically take the words out of my mouth. It feels like no matter how much effort I put in studying, I will still fail. His class is basically designed to fail you.
Literally horrible. Both test averages are failing and refuses to curve them. Extremely condescending.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! 70% of your grade is dependent on the average of two of your three midterms and so far the mean/median has been in the 50s for both midterms. exams are extremely difficult for the time constraint for a 50 minute in class exam. i had never seen a full class take the whole time until taking this class and he refuses to curve
How am I still failing the exams even when I put aside my o chem homework just to prepare for the damn exams ?? for 3 weeks straight it's been nonstop nonsense. do not take. this class is structured horribly and i've never performed so lowly in a class.
He's the typical new professor that transfers to UT expecting us to be smarter. The class is literally structured to make you fail if you don't do good on the midterms. You can understand exactly what he's doing in class but none of it matters if you just don't do good on the midterms. take fischer if they're the only two options.
gives us 15-20 minutes per problem in class then gives 15 similar problems on a test to do in 50 minutes. the workload is so much higher than other genetics professors and our test averages are much lower compared to the department. two test averages that are well below failing is not the fault of students but the professor & his exams
His exams are curved at the end of the semester with the extra credit points. He is an amazing professor and exams are super fair. You just need to go to class and do the homework. He provides more than enough office hours if you get stuck.
I would say take any other genetics professor if you can. His exams are mostly free response and extremely difficult. He also refuses to curve even though the averages for the past 2 exams are failing scores. Going to all the lectures, discussions, and studying for weeks in advanced does not pay off in this course.
Whoever is giving him a good rating are literally bots. Exams are long, difficult, and FRQ. Only gives 50 min to complete. Nothing covered in lecture is on the exam, but attendance is mandatory for quizzes. He has office hours, but will only cover like 4 questions in the span of 2 hours. Even TA's get lost sometimes doing the questions during OHs.
This is by far the most difficult class I have taken at UT, as an all A student I am scoring 40's-50's on these exams there's no homework grade you have 3 midterms one gets dropped, those saying "PUT IN THE WORK" girll...... we are ALL trying, you really think we all want to fail, the average was a 56...
I have never performed so badly in a class before. I am going to have to q drop this class which sucks. I WISH HE KNEW THAT THERE ARE SO MANY STUDENTS IN THE CLASS THAT ARE NEW TO PROBABILITY OR STATS! I do not know what he expects from his students, it is his first year and he needs to calm down. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
WHAT THE ACTUAL... this teacher isn't a good teacher at all he doesn't explain concepts well and will make fun of the whole class if we do not know the answer to something. He gives a tiny amount of extra credit. I will be q dropping because it's impossible to get an A or even a B after the first two exams when the exams make up 90% of your grade.
I knew genetics would be hard, but I didn't think it'd be SUPER HARD!!! I have grown to hate this class that I've started to feel unmotivated. The average for the first midterm is a 59 and won't curve it. The average for this second midterm is looking to be lower than last midterm's. His teaching style is not great. Take another prof if you can.
He likes to brag about how he needed to request bigger rooms for his office hours... THAT'S NOT A GOOD THING!!! You can only succeed if you attend, but we're all busy with class and other things. Even if you attend, we're expected to do the same problems he takes 20 minutes to do, but 18 of them in 50 minutes on the midterm. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!
His exams are very fair, they are just slightly reworked questions that he has already given us before hand from homework or discussion. He gives extra credit options spontaneously in class and is so caring about us passing he has office hours like all day. You have the resources needed to pass, its an effort problem for those who are failing.
This class is extremely difficult, but Chad does care. He is very accessible outside of class (office hours, responds on ed discussion same day). Class is exam heavy. Exams do not reflect lecture but more ungraded homework problems. Exams failing average but offering minimum 30 extra credit points. Very good at explaining and will work with you.
I did the homework, discussion questions, and even re-did questions we did in class AND attended office hours. I can explain all these concepts from front to back. Yet, when I finished the exam... a big fat F. I'm on academic probation and might get kicked out unless I drop this class. He should make these tests a little more realistic...
Great professor. Exam questions taken directly from the homework. Worked out problems in depth during office hours.
More engaging as a lecturer than the majority of other science faculty, he obviously cares about us and wants us to succeed. It is getting painful to see him get more and more depressed as the average keeps lowering. Lots of extra credit and AWESOME ta Tharani. I think he is having trouble balancing exam formatting and it messes ppl up.
Chad is an excellent professor. Genetics is a hard class but Chad does everything in his power to make you succeed. He has office hours 5 days a week and twice on MWF. The exams are not as bad as people make them seem. I can point you to the EXACT HW or Discussion question each problem is based on. He's also adding 30 points to every exam.
Chad is an amazing professor, and his exams are very fair. They are based off homework and lectures. There is nothing new. People who failed were the ones who didn't come to class and put the work in. If you go to class, pay attention, and attend your discussion sections it's not hard to get a good grade.
Chad is the best!! His lectures are super easy to follow. Don't listen to the haters they are just salty (also its literally just two people making a bunch of hate comments).
Great professor, genetics is hard no matter who you take it with but he does well to make sure everyone who puts in the effort does well in his class. Go to office hours engage in class discussions don't skip your weekly meeting with the TA and you'll be solid.
The exams are not bad, and a lot of people say he doesn't curve his exams. Maybe go to a lecture and read the syllabus? He adds extra credit at the end of the semester. He is literally adding up to 30 extra points to your midterms and one midterm is dropped. Chad is the best professor I have ever had.
Chad is the sweetest person ever. He is never rude to students and is very funny. He cares a lot about his students and I think people are being so mean in these reviews. He isn't going to just hand out As (its genetics), you actually have to study and the exams aren't anything new. Its all lectures and homework and I would 100% recommend him.
He is a sweet, caring man who is excited and passionate about this subject. I have fun in his class and can actually stay awake because he's engaging and funny. But... his tests are lowkey insane and really difficult and I'm failing... I know he's new to this but I would like to stop crying over this class.
Sorry but you can't defend his exam averages being in the 50's and not curving it idc about the bonus points at the end of the semester it's not enough. He won't take accountability and realize students doing bad are because of him
Brock is an amazing professor. He always makes sure that we understand the concepts and he is always offering additional help during his office hours.
Number 1, upper quartile on the test was a 74, meaning 75% of students got below a 74 which is bad. Number 2, you should not have to go to office hours to be able to get proper lecture from Chad. People saying you just need to go to office hours; that means he doesn't properly teach you everything you need to know in class and that isn't right.
Chad is genuinely a great guy who cares about each of his students. People feel entitled to an A which isn't the case for this class. It is difficult. That being said, the exams are very doable if you put in the work to get an A. Chad does not owe you a good grade or an easy class. Go to his office hours and do the problems he gives you.
BEWARE of UNREALISTIC class expectations. Hw and class problems take him 20-40 minutes to do each but expect you to complete 18-19 questions open ended in 54 minutes.
Chad cares tons. He is only condescending to people who dont show up to class and expect A's. Exams are slightly reworked homework questions, but I do agree the exams are way too long for 50 minutes. He is very responsive and gives you all the materials to succeed. This is most people's first upper division bio class- its supposed to be hard.
Great class if you like or want to know more about bio-statistics. Brock is smart, caring, funny, and extremely knowledgable. Always connects concepts to real-world scenarios. Lots of extra credit, tests are pulled directly from practice. HW is completely optional, but attendance in office hours is pretty much mandatory to succeed. Love him!
Genetics is hard, but Chad has so many resources for you to do well. Exams are just the homework rewritten, and he put an identical question from exam 1 on exam 2. Overall, this class takes effort, but if you put in the work, you'll be fine.
The class is difficult, I won't lie. However, if you do the homework questions, go to office hours, discussion sections, and ask questions, I don't see how you wont be successful in this class. All his exams are similar questions from practice, so it is all doable. Chad is a great guy, and a great professor in my opinion.
While there are similarities between the homework/ provided problems, they don't adequately prepare you for the exam. The free response questions are time-consuming and since they are often linked to one another, one wrong answer can cost 5-15+ exam points. His teaching style doesn't land well with students as seen with exam averages in the 50s.
I cannot believe how terrible this professor is. Almost all his students are failing his class and his tests are impossible to finish on time. No curves for tests, pity amounts of extra credit, and times pop quizzes. Don't expect to learn anything unless you plan on sitting in his office hours all day and neglect your other classes.
This class is impossible. I'm an all A student with good study habits and this class is my lowest grade I've ever had in my life. I'm super busy with 17 hours, a job, and club so I can't make it to office hours every day. He's not the worst person in the world, but any other genetics teacher would be better.
He's an okay teacher. However, you cannot succeed unless you go to OH. If he didn't make it that you had to go to OH to learn the exam material, his reviews would be better. I definitely failed the first midterm because I didn't know that OH was necessary. For the second midterm, I didn't even get to finish the test on time. Would avoid if you can
Chad's lectures are oversimplified and are no preparation for his exams. His homework is insanely difficult and he takes an hour to explain 2 questions in office hours (I'm not exaggerating). His tests are insanely difficult and very limited on time. I'm taking OChem this semester and Genetics is 100% more difficult. Don't take him.
Class is insanely difficult; I do everything and more and I am barely passing. So if you want a kind of funny professor and don't care about your grade, listen to the good reviews here and take him. If you want to actually get a good grade and not have to dedicate your soul to this class, listen to the bad reviews and don't take him.
I feel so unmotivated to study for this class after the second test because I feel like no matter what I do, I am failing. I can't drop this class because it offsets my four year plan and as a pre-med I'm terrified that this class is going to tank my GPA. Genetics is a hard class but it shouldn't be this difficult. I agree with every bad review.
Yes, the class is hard - but genetics is just hard lol. We use the exact same textbook with the exact same homework problems as every other genetics professor here, so it's not like the difficulty is hugely different with Chad. As for teaching, Chad's great. He's super available outside of class and a cool guy.
The class is difficult and professor is rude and condescending. Both tests had averages below 60, instead of curving he said that even if we do everything right to succeed we can still fail and he refuses to take any accountability. Honestly was going to try to ride it out but the latest announcement blaming students was the last straw
This class isn't designed for you to succeed the way Chad structures it. What baffles me is that you get one exam drop but your midterms are still 70% of your grade and final 20% of your grade. No way UT should approve of exams being more than 100% of students grade(ideally without the drop)nor deal w/ Chads nonchalant attitude towards our success.
This class is a nightmare. Most of us are failing despite putting in effort. The grading system and exam difficulty make success nearly impossible. Chad's messages are disrespectful, and he offers no real help. Many students are dropping this class to avoid failing.
Midterms are worth 70% of your grade, and they're much harder than what's covered in class. The exams are impossible to finish in time. He said you can put in max effort and still fail, and he's right—just not in the way he thinks.
I am going to have to drop this class. Despite the INTENSE effort I've put into this class, I am failing because Chad refuses to curve the midterms that have averages in their 50s. He is insane and condescending. You're better off putting this class off if Chad is your only option of a professor. DO NOT TAKE!!
Don't be tempted by the few good reviews. He basically requires office hours (i'm in 7 classes, a sport, and a job and cannot go). I know so many people (myself included) that have studied so hard for these exams, and it just isn't enough. A class should never force someone to neglect their other obligations simply to just pass the class.
Chad said in class today that his exams were reviewed by faculty and they were deemed the hardest. don't take this
Don't take him he says he's accessible but he does 2 problems every office hour while our test covers way more than that, he said he's the hardest professor and he's okay with it so just don't take him ever
The exams are brutal—50 minutes for 20 tough questions, many requiring exact answers to 4 decimal places, with no partial credit. No practice exams or resources. Averages are in the 50s, and half the class fails. Avoid this class if you can.
If other faculty determine your exams are the hardest in the entire department, let's hope that they are not worth like 90% of the overall grade or that you at the very least offer a curve…oh wait
80 people Q dropped this class within a two day period, if that's not enough to deter you away from this class idk what else to tell you. he brags that his exams are the hardest in the department and refuses to curve despite over half the class failing. he tried to justify his low scores with last years averages FROM A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR
Chad's a good teacher and genuinely caring person. I have some issues with the weighting and structure of his tests—large portions of your grade come from binary responses (just entering a number), which I don't believe always represents how well you know a topic. Still, if you put in effort, you'll (probably) be fine.
He's very good at explaining complex concepts and his lectures are very detailed but they do not cover much content. His class is very mathematical heavy and relies on practice problems especially those from the textbook however you need to put a lot of effort into the class to truly succeed. He does drop one exam and provides extra credits.
Extremely hard 20 question exams with FRQ rounded to the fourth decimal, maybe a couple MCQ. Don't take it from me, the Bio Depart. said that his exams are the hardest and Chad has pride in it. No curves, he doesn't believe in them. Exams worth 90%. But I guess he's "nice". So many people have dropped lectures are basically empty, and I'll be next.
A professor who takes no accountability will result in a failing class. So many people have dropped that a mass class has become practically empty. His superiors are constantly investigating him because of the amount of students who have dropped and complained about the course is RIDICULOUS.Chad doesn't care for his students success over his pride.
I'm terrified and concerned about my grade. I wish these tests were easier but Chad thinks that would be a cop out. His exams are very hard. Do not take this class. Literally crying while writing this.
The worst professor I have ever taken at UT. He is rude when asking questions, has the hardest exams in the entire department, and insists that going to office hours is the only way to pass. If he takes 30 mins to complete 1 problem, how can we complete 18 in 54 mins? I honestly think he's getting fired after this semester because of his drop rate.
The worst professor ever. The average for his exams is 50! 100% of the final grade comes from exams, quizzes, or finals. So, you will fail if you cannot do 20 hard questions in 50 minutes for each exam. He took 1 hour to review one problem during office hours but expects us to do 20 in 50 minutes! DO NOT TAKE!!!
difficult exams. not worth to take the class. fischer better.
The depth of his lectures entirely misrepresents the difficulty of his exams. He will assign an "extra" problem for practice that is much harder than anything in the homework, or textbook, and then sneak that on the test. He also felt it necessary to add concepts/methods not in our textbook (ex. three-point cross).
Before our first midterm, Professor Brock told us not to study too much. After all, he said, there is more to life than studying for tests. Professor Brock said he is disgusted by teachers who take pleasure in seeing their students struggle. Professor Brock LOVES population genetics, that was his thing... I am exhausted, diminished, weary.
Chad redeemed himself. I won't give him a 5 bc I've had much better profs, but he gave us the easiest last exam possible after dozens of kids dropped. Very exam heavy, but it's reasonable for the course. I literally bombed the first exam but have a 100 average after all midterms with a drop and EC. Go to OH, discussion, and believe in yourself.
Dr. Chad is a nice guy, but it is clear something is wrong with the tests he gives and he doesn't care to fix it. My biggest problem was how he would not give the answers for practice problems, and you had to show up to office hours to get them. Show up at office hours and he answers maybe 3, then he's gone. He makes it really hard to study
Horribly unfair exams, he's rude and during office hours he spends an hour on 1 practice problem, but we have 50 minutes to solve 18 of similar difficulty level on the exams. No study resources and refuses to give answer keys or solution manuals to his own problems. Literally rolls his eyes when you ask problems before lecture
If you have no choice but to take Brock for Genetics, wait for a future semester to take it with someone else. Avoid him at all costs. There's no way to put into words how terrible this class is with this professor. There's literally no way he could make it worse than it is, and the midterms are pretty much impossible.
Extremely test heavy but lots of extra credit. The test level of difficulty are extremely similar to Discussion worksheets provided by the best Genetics TA Tharani. With the ec I am guaranteed an A if I get a 70+ on the final exam. Furthermore, Brock is extremely personable and is one of the actually funny professors at UT. His jokes hit different
He's a very nice guy, but his class is horrible. The only things you're graded on are pop quizzes and tests. There are QTDs as extra credit. His exams are extremely hard, he's admitted to having the hardest exams, with 18 questions in 54 minutes. A lot of ungraded homework and must attend office hours even to have a chance of doing good. DON'T TAKE
This man is a terrible professor. He's funny if you find being condescending and making student's feel dumb humorous. His midterms are evil with averages being in the 50s. No curve, but he gives QTD points otherwise everyone would be failing. Lectures not useful for exams. Our TA Tharani is a sweetheart though.
Your grade is mostly dependent on tests, and he drops one. He has openly stated that his tests are the hardest out of all the genetics classes. However, he gives lots of extra credit points to your test in the form of questions of the day. I don't think his class was that bad, but I don't know if I'd take him again if I had to do it all over again.
Lectures are horrible, they don't reflect the homework or tests at all. If you want to have a chance of doing good, you have to go to every office hour and discussion session. Admits to having the hardest tests, with 50 average. Drops 1 test and has extra credit QTD, but its not enough. Delay if he's you're only option. First time I didn't get an A

Your grade is based on midterms, a final, and quizzes. Exams weigh 90%, with averages around 50%. Chad's big ego and snarky remarks only worsen his terrible course. He mocked students walking out of class after he announced no additional extra credit. If your lectures are empty and students keep dropping, maybe it's time for some self-reflection.
If I could give this man a zero, I would. This is the worst professor I have ever had. Everyone I know has dropped this course, including me. If the BIO department and students are giving criticism, maybe you should listen. If Chad Brock is your only option, just wait. Don't take his course unless you're prepared to fail all your midterms and drop.
Literally the worst prof. He gives you all of the materials to do well, but it takes way too much time/effort when people have actual lives. I missed 2 weeks of class because I broke my ankle and he told me I couldn't make up any of the in-class extra credit questions. He said you're either in class or you're not. It dropped my grade // not fair
A student should not have to give up so many other priorities just to study for this class. I have a job, other hard classes, extracurriculars, research, etc. The way this course is structured makes me crash out every other day. He expects us too much. Get a grip Chad. We don't all love genetics and we don't all have the time.
The TA is very helpful, but she runs through things very very fast. The tests are similar to practice problems, and in class problems, but it requires SO much studying. I don't recommend at all.
I highkey recommend against taking his classes. Genetics is supposed to be a hard class, but with Chad its nearly impossible. I went to Sanger learning center for help and they literally couldnt help me because his tests are on another level. Not everyone can afford to go to every office hour that he has and thats literally the only way to pass.
This class is so insanely difficult. I agree with every bad review here. Chad is incredibly rude and condescending. My friend is in medical school and is a genetics tutor and even she couldn't help me with some of the questions we had to do in class. He has really high expectations and refuses to take accountability for his class's failure. Avoid.
BEWARE OF FAKE 1 STAR REVIEWS! THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER! Chad does not know how to teach this course properly and is very condescending to students. The exams are insanely difficult, no time to finish, and EVERY exam average was FAILING! I hope the university takes action, investigates him, and gives credit back to those who dropped his course.
This professor is outright terrible. DO NOT TAKE AT ALL COSTS. He openly admitted having the hardest exams from the genetics professors and our averages are 50%. Majority of students are forced to drop the class. He's a condescending and rude professor. Made one of my classmates cry right in front of me. JUST DO NOT TAKE!
If you are taking this class be prepared to do A LOT of work. I do not mind Chad as a person, but his class is unrealistic. Hundreds of homework questions that you need to do to do well on tests. He holds a lot of office hours, but you essentially have to attend them to do well in the class. The most difficult class I have taken at UT for sure.
Very very difficult. I struggled the first half a lot and prof brock is a very demeaning character and i never once felt motivated until i broke up with my ex and became an academic weapon. don't take him if you can help it, but if you must go to OH and pay attention as much as possible in lectures (even when he yaps)
DO NOT TAKE CHAD BROCK. He is one of the worst professors I have ever had. The grades are based on the tests and borderline impossible. You have 54 mins to solve 18 questions that would traditionally take 5-10 mins to solve 1 of them. He gives unrealistic expectations and that's just the beginning of it. And to top it off he never helps!
this man is horrendous. if you got stuck with him I honestly would recommend just moving genetics to the following semester because it's so bad. if you absolutely have to take him, i'd say do all of his homework, attend all of his classes to get the extra credit because every point matters, and attend office hours.
I've never had a professor so unwilling to listen to their students. Genetics is a hard subject and having Chad as a professor made it ten times worse.
AVOID!! Genuinely the worst academic experience of MY LIFE and I don't think it could get any worse than this. Even some of the TAs CONFUSED. I would study for an exam for 3 weeks. FAIL. Studied through the day and night until I had to take the test. FAIL.Treats office hours like it's mandatory (all sessions) when lecture is unhelpful.
Dr. Brock's class was very demanding however I disagree with people that the exams were hard. They were exactly like the homeworks so if you understand that you will be okay. The amount of extra credit he provides basically brought everyone's midterm average to a 100. Don't fall behind, go to office hours and do the homework and it will be okay!
Genetics is supposed to be hard. However, Chad makes it so much worse. Must attend basically every single office hour to understand anything. In Office Hours, it is likely that 1 problem will take the entire time. I'm not a math wizard, but when it takes a century to do 1 problem, doing the exam in 54 minutes is unrealistic.Great TA, but good lord!
I know that genetics is already supposed to be a tough course, however taking it with Chad made it way more difficult. Not only was he not helpful when it came to answering questions, but his exams were extremely difficult. He gave extra credit points that really saved my grade at the end, but other than that I would not recommend taking Chad.
Just don't take him... Unless you're taking relatively easy classes or not that many hours, sure you may have enough time to dedicate to this class. But if not, a 94 cutoff, terrible exams, and lack of willingness to help students... heard his drop was more than double fischer's too...
He is rude, unprofessional, makes his exams too hard and the cutoff for an A is a 94. Need I say less. Literally even the TA's were so confused & Chad likes to roll his eyes at students with genuine questions and belittle them. Please avoid this class at all costs it's been such a burden on my semester and genuinely a horrible experience.
Before this class, I at least had somewhat of an interest in genetics. His convoluted approach to teaching along with condescending attitude made me hate this class. He has a huge superiority complex. On top of this, the class was extremely difficult (50 averages per test) and the only way to do good was to go to every single office hour. dont take
Dr Chad's class was challenging, but doable. My main issue is that Dr. Chad is helpful, but the class requires a disproportionate amount of time. However, he did give extra credit and shortened the list of assigned homework problems towards the end of the year. Just take out time to go to office hours or post on Ed, and you'll be fine.
Ok so Chad as a person is amazing, but it was the class itself that was very hard and frustrating. 90% of your grade is composed of 3 exams and a final. Exams were pretty difficult, but they did include problems gone over in class and discussions. This has been the hardest class I've been in, and I'm glad I didn't drop it. Would never take again.
please avoid at all costs. everything the bad reviews are saying is true: tricky tests, long problems w/ no partial credit, failing averages, chad is condescending, rude, and gatekeeps answers. managed to get an A but only after spending way too much time on this class and constantly crashing out. doable if you have a TON of time. otherwise run!!!!
Course is graded on 3 midterms (lowest dropped) and the final, and that is it. He adds up to 30pts EC from in class quizzes and that saved me, but I would NEVER take him again. He gives no review content & tests are taken in an impossible timeframe. His only saving graces were the TAs.They were so nice to makeup for him being rude & a bad teacher.
Chad is a concise and invested professor. The first two exam averages were low, but he drastically improved the third exam and final. He also dropped the lowest exam grade and allowed students to earn a ton of easy extra credit that was added directly to the two highest test scores. He's a great guy and cares about his students doing well.
Chad really was something special. His tests are ridiculously difficult, and he had no issue with our averages that were way lower than other professors. Yes, he provides extra credit, but this only raised the exam averages to the mid-70s, and exams and the final are worth a combined 90%. He is also condescending and rude in class, don't take him!
Did poorly on the first 2 midterms and the averages were in the 50s. Decided to not drop the class and studied INCREDIBLY hard for the 3rd exam and final. No matter the outcome of my grade this course was overly stressful. He made up for his mistakes towards the end of the course, and added extra credit. Nice guy but really stressed all of us out.
This teacher was terrible. His test averages were 50s on the first 2 and then barley like a 70 on the 3rd. The final was also extremely hard. The only thing that saved practically the entire class from failing was his extra credit. Overall, terrible and do not recommend.
A few HW questions per unit are more important for the exam and harder than the rest, and those are the ones he spends a while on in OHs. After attending enough of his + TA OHs you are sure to master the content. I never saw as many people regularly in ANY OHs as there are leaving bad reviews here. Drops your lowest midterm and gives so much EC!!!
Chad was an amazing professor. His exams are difficult but they are almost exactly from the textbook which he goes over in depth in office hours. On top of that, he adds 30 free points to your average exam grade, essentially curving everyone's score up a whole 15 percent. If anyone says he is a bad professor they didn't put the work in.
after our first exam majority of the class failed and when a group of us went to go speak with him about what we can do better he said "put in more effort its not getting any easier." I was spending 5-6 hours in his office hours a week where he would go over 2-3 questions in an hour. tests are so difficult and he's rude to students who are confused
Chad gets a lot of hate because genetics is HARD. It takes work outside of class to understand the material, but once you do, you are golden. He cares about his students, gives you 30 points in EC for tests, and hosts 10+ OHs a week. I have never met another professor who has as many OHs as he does. He wants everyone to do well, the class is hard.
Chad is very condescending, but lectures were engaging. The class is difficult because the content is difficult. Exams were definitely fair, but study hard for them. Lots of content is covered, but it's clear what questions he likes to ask so focus on those topics. The "homework" isn't due, but it's helpful for a deeper understanding of content.
Honestly this class is not as bad as people make it seem, just be aware that he does not curve at all. I was a tenth away from the next letter grade up and he did not respond to my email asking to curve. Be ready to think critically- this class does not require much memorization at all and it is mostly problem solving and math skills.
I would rather fossilize myself in Antartica for 100 million years than take this class again. I feel like I age every time I stepped into the classroom. It was so much work and he was always unfair about accommodating students.
The exams were really hard and not at all like the lectures, but he gives up to 15 extra points per exam as long as you attend class. Go to office hours and do not miss discussion. He is easy to talk to and will explain concepts if you ask them right.
I HATED this class. ngl I had to seek out therapy after this class hahahahah :( Stupidly hard class. Yes, I did the readings. Yes, I went to office hours. Exams were still brutal. If I ever see chad again I may cry
I dropped chad's genetics course last semester because it was brutal. I'm retaking it this semester, and now that the class is smaller, all the questions in office hours actually get answered and classes feel more comfortable. His exam averages have risen since last semester, and topics are easier. I love Tharani sm, please go to her office hours!
Chad Brock is by far the worst professor I have taken. I had to drop this course to save my gpa, I have never gotten anything lower than a B+ in any science course. My first exam, I got a 45 after studying, doing homework, etc. I figured it was A ME PROBLEM, but no, the entire exam got the same score and literally half the classes dropped.
Took it last sem, and stuck it out after everyone else dropped. After the first two midterms (weighted 70%), he was more lenient on the numeric free-response answers. Exams were 50/50 MCQ/FRQ, but the FRQ answers were numbers up to the 4th decimal place. Office hours were required to pass; had to go once a week. Tharani is a really great explainer.
Literally take any other professor if possible. Chad has a constant resentful attitude and honestly never seems happy to be teaching. That would be all fine and dandy if his class actually did good on his heavy weighted exams, but we don't, averages are rarely passing. I wish would've listened to past reviews before I was forced to take his course.
He's a chill guy, happy to help in office hours and answer questions in lectures. He genuinely wants to help you learn. There is a lot of challenging material to cover. Most of your grade depends on three midterms (lowest dropped) and one final. Even though homework isn't turned in or graded, you still need to stay on top of it to do well.
Honestly as someone Q-dropped Fischer I would rather take Brock. If you end up with absolute to choice take anyone but Fischer I was late to my degree because of her.
He acts like he is being forced to teach this class and has no interest in building any relationship with students. This class made me lose my passion for learning genetics and I didn't get the understanding out of it that I thought I would.
Took FA24. This class is difficult, but it's not impossible. The worst part about Chad is his attitude, but he's a good teacher w/ engaging lectures & I gained a thorough understanding of material. DO THE HOMEWORK. Go to office hours. It's truly not that bad people are dramatic. Got a 40 on an exam, worked harder on the others and ended with an A.
Bro he is a good professor. These bad reviews are off. He teaches well and exams are way easier than fisher exams (I took him after dropping Fishers in fall). one exam gets dropped and you get 20 something points to distribute across exams by doing partnered QTDs. At least he has quiz grades to cushion your grade unlike Fisher which is just exams.
Professor Brock's class is like tough love. His tests are hard cause he wants you to put in the work. I can confidently say that this way of teaching has made me a master in Genetics and if he teaches any other course, I will take it in a heartbeat. It was a tough journey with a lot of pain and crying (yes, really) but it was very worth it.
He is so funny, easy to talk to, and a great lecturer. His TA was also just the best, and the discussion sessions were so incredibly helpful. However, the grade distribution for this course was just diabolical. Your grade is determined almost entirely by exams, so doing poorly on more than one exam will basically take you out.
Low exam averages and he's a real meanie. I genuinely do not get it. Even the Biology Department doesn't get it. Why be a professor if you don't have the patience and will to teach students? Chad go back to researching fishies if that's what makes you happy... If you can take Engler or Moon, I highly recommend. If you have to take Chad, good luck.
My tips from taking this course in spring '25: Not sure abt other profs, but his grading scale is drastic. No partial cred, minimal extra cred, final worth 20%, u could only miss 1-2 questions per test to do well. Lectures aren't so important, but QTDs are; ASK FOR HELP on them. LEARN EXACTLY HOW TO DO the questions he emphasizes for the tests.
First RMP I have ever done. Here just to say that Chad has a bad rep, but this class is an easy A if you put in 2 hours/week (or 8 hours before exam). He can be a little intimidating, but very kind if you speak to him one on one. The TA Tharani is the best. Chad is devilishly underrated & he gives 10 points added to midterm average as extra credit
Chads class is surprisingly easy to excel in (given you have plenty of time.) If you attend all the discussions, do the qtd's and focus on hw problems he specifically likes then youre golden. I attended like half the lectures I was supposed to and got an A. You can drop 1 of 3 midterms and get 10% extra credit on your midterm average. Very generous
Would not recommend If you want to keep a good GPA. Do not take him.
He's generous with xtra credit, bumped me from a C to a B. Mock exams helped immensely to prep for the real exams. Average for the first exam was bad, but you can drop 1 of 3. Exams became slightly less difficult as the semester went on. I didn't do any textbook hw after the first few weeks tbh, I mainly practiced discussion qs, qtds, and mocks.
I think Chad deserves more credit! This class was super hard, especially because it is exam-heavy, but if you actually know how to solve the questions he tells you to focus on I think you'll be okay. Tharani is the best and she will explain a question 100 times if you need it so don't be afraid to ask questions.I learned a lot in this class!
I don't understand the bad ratings at all; the test grading was really generous, with the lowest score dropped and 10-point curves. Office hours were really helpfull and the practice tests were very similar to exams.
Grading policy is WACK. The only things that are graded are the QTDs (bonus) which are too hard to get right anyways, the tests which if you miss 1 you get a 93 AT MOST and the quizzes which if you miss 1 you get a 75. The A range is 93+ which isn't possible unless you make 0 mistakes. As of fall 2025 he doesn't curve at all like not 1 point.
Dr. Dan doesn't deserve these ratings at all. As long as you keep up with HW, QTDs, and quizzes, it isn't bad. The class is exam heavy with each of the two midterms basically being 30% of your grade (15 questionsvery little room for error), but it is doable.
Dr. Chad Brock lives up to his name. At the start of the year, I failed his first test and got a 67. He said the next tests get better though. I thought this was propaganda, but it was true. I got a 100 on the second, and a 93 on the third. Now I just need a 50 on the final to get an A. Godspeed.
This class killed any joy and child-like wonder still in me. I am a shell of the person I once was. Save yourself if you can.
Bros immaculate. The grading is harsh but fair. you WILL fail the first test but life isnt over bc the next 2 are easy. I wanna rub his bald head bc he did a good job this semester. TAs are amazing. If you just go to lecture and discussion and maybe make a few friends youll be chillin. All his tests are js discussion.
Great lecturer, but mostly reads from slides. Lots of memorization, your assigned discussion is mandatory (quizzes), homework is optional but very useful, tests are multiple choice/numeric response. He does not give out answers easily, he wants you to try first then ask. EC points available IN class (locked), can work w/ group, simple.
Dr. Brock mainly reads off the slides but still has interesting things he adds into lectures + extra credit points so it's necessary to go. No online recording of class. Only teaches concepts & not how to solve the problems. Amazing TAs, Tharani has saved my life. The doc makes fun of people that ask questions in class & will make you feel stupid.
I agree with most of these ratings, but I don't think he was that bad. I don't like the way he teaches; he assigns lots of hw that's completely unnecessary. TAs definitely carried. Go to office hours, don't study for tests with hw, study with the worksheets he gives, QTDs, and quizzes. I would have failed this class without the TAs.
This professor is way over-hated. First exam was rough for the whole class, but the second two were much better and you get one exam drop. He's a great lecturer and offers lots of extra credit through the in-class QTDs (question of the day). If you put in the work, you will get good results. And he's jacked. Shoutout Tharani, best TA in the game.
TA carried class. Not as bad as people make him out to be. He gives hella extra credit up to 5% overall grade through QTD's and gives mock exam that is basically the exam. Go to office hours and you are chillin. overall goat with nice tricep.
Dan the goat brock is not as bad as everyone says he is so don't be scared. HW questions are difficult but seen on QTDs (extra credit) so gives you a headstart if you do the HW. His office hours help a alot with HW and lecture questions. Tests are always QTD/discussion questions that he GAVE B4 so studying those means ur set. he's also really buff
I've always heard bad things about Brock, but I feel like his class is very doable. If you go to class to do QTDs you can get up to 4 points added to your average at the end of the semester. Listening to him in class won't help you though, everything I learned in this class came from my amazing TA, Tharani. Go to discussion + do worksheets, easy A.
This is my second time taking genetics (Janice Fischer victim), and I would say Brock is a total upgrade. He has low ratings, but I feel like they don't reflect how easy he makes the class. Go to your discussion, do the QTDs in class to get the 5% extra credit, take time to do the mock exams before the actual midterm, and you'll do well.
tbh i love him- very kind. Quizzes in discussion every week-they aren't bad. Pay attention at discussion and participate. Go to office hours if you don't understand lectures/hw. genetics is hard, no matter the professor. he is very generous on extra credit and he tells you exactly what to know for the tests. stop blaming brock for your bad grade!!!
Once you get a study habit down, this class isn't too bad. It's definitely front-heavy, with the first unit being really difficult. Brock loves probability, so putting double effort into the first unit will set you up for success the whole year. Go to class, get the QTD extra credit, and go to Tharani's office hours for HW. Tharani is the BEST.
As a (former) 4.0 student, HE SUCKS. He doesn't teach u what u need to know for tests/quizzes/QTDs so u have to rely on the TAs. You can't get an A without getting either a 100 on one of the tests or 100s on most of the quizzes because missing more than 1 puts u in B range (or F if its a quiz). He also deleted my ED discussion questions lmfao
His rating is way too high. He does not teach anything that is valuable for the tests which makes his lectures a huge waste of time aside from QTDs which you will not be able to get right without help. His grading policy is entirely too harsh for most to get an A. Take literally anyone else.
Reading and textbook problems as optional HW but he covers the content in lecture. Tests are easy and more about problem solving than content so really you could go all semester without doing any homework and be fine. Incredibly easy grades so you have to hold yourself accountable to learn all the content not on tests—Wish it was harder. Swole prof
Honestly I loved Prof Brock, he was clear and a very respectable guy. his grading criteria is really nice- you only need to do well on 2/3 exams to get an A. Got a 58 my first and then 93s on next 2, I did mediocre on the final but the QTDS brought me back to an A. I would take again.
Chad Brock if a very controversial professor, his lectures are amazing and keep me engaged the whole time and his QTDs are very helpful to understanding the content. But keep in mind that the homework is challenging and vital to passing the exams which are a massive percentage of your grade in the class. Overall he's a great professor tho!
It's definitely a tough class, but Professor Brock made it a lot more manageable. The lectures were engaging and the QTDs gave a good sense of what test questions could be like. The mock exams were very similar to the tests. Go to as many office hours as possible, whether its TA office hours or Professor Brock's, they are lifesavers.
Amazinggg professor & class. Very interesting and A is very achievable. Everyone who says this class is evil just didn't try. GO TO AS MANY OFFICE HRS AS POSSIBLE. GO TO CLASS bc QTDs give an insane amount of extra credit. Yes the exams are free response, but you have seen every single question before (if you do the QTDs, quizzes, and mocks exams).
I don't leave many reviews but I thought Brock is graded unfairly. You get 1 test drop, and the last two exams were 80 averages, same with the final. First exam had a 55 average, but its bc stats is a pre req and people got stats pre req waived. Lots of EC, exams mirror homework/EC questions. Brock is a good lecturer too. I finished with over a 100
Professor Chad's ratings are unfair, he's a nice guy and his exams are very manageable if you go to class for QTDs, quizzes, and do mock exams. I didn't do any homework, but showed up to every office hours with him and got an A. Lecture can be a lot of info at once, but discussion sections clarify questions and what concepts will be on exams.
The first exam is difficult but the other two and the final are fine (averages were 59, 83, 83, and 76). One test is dropped and 5 extra credit points added to your final grade if you attend class. Exams are a fair reflection of the practice/mock exam. Interesting content and he's a good lecturer, but it's very math-based, which isn't for everyone.
A is achievable don't freak out if you got him. You will fail the first test, almost everyone drops it. Lock in for the next two, and do your best on the final (it was hard). Attend lecture to get 5 bonus points added to your grade, it will save you. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!! Tharani will be your savior I cannot thank her enough.
His grades are absolutely final. He will not round. Give up and drop the class by the second exam if u haven't gotten an A on one of the two, it's wraps. 5% extra credit from the QTDs is pretty generous tbh but he's just so difficult to work with. Tharani the TA is the GOAT she genuinely carried me thru everything. She deserves the world.
Tons of extra credit opportunities but only if you show up in person to lectures. Tharani saved my grade so many times, TAs and UGCAs really make the class! Overall, genetics is hard but sometimes Dr. Brock's way of explaining just did not make sense. Mock exams are also insanely helpful when studying.
Lectures are good for QTDs and getting some type of foundation of the material, but heavily recommend paying attention to discussions (especially the worksheets) and potential review sessions. Those + mock exams help tons for what you need to know to do well. Overall, not too bad as long as you can dedicate a good amount of time for the course.
