Chad is super organized with lots of review material and practice problems online. His lectures and class notes directly apply to understanding the homework and mid term questions. He gives us everything we need to succeed. He has a ton of office hours and helps explain hard to understand concepts. Lectures are a bit dry and dense though.
Terrible. Worst prof at UBC Okanagan. You'll feel great about his midterms then fail them. He does not even have his Ph.D. This guy is a total joke.
He is the hardest marker ever, he thinks his students are idiots, and he writes paragraph after paragraph for notes in class without showing any examples. IF YOU NEED THIS CLASS TAKE IT WITH SOMEONE ELSE BECAUSE YOU'LL WASTE $500 IF YOU TAKE IT WITH CHAD DAVIS.
Chad is worst prof I have ever ever ever ever ever had. I hope that they dont let him be a full time professor please. I understand he is a new professor but he has a long road of improvement just to get to crap prof category. I have never regretted dropping out of a course this much before. I would take a W or an F to never see Chad again
Chad is like a really bad prof. He doesn't know how to control a classroom, his assessment practices are poor, and his notes are often confusing and illegible. Chad often dresses like he's going to a funeral service which is funny at first until you realize its your funeral after you fail Math 221. Please don't take this course.
Trying to do well in the course is the equivalent to trying to prove that 1 0? If you study hard and you think you did well on a midterm, you probably didn't, and if you feel like you did poorly, then you did. Chad's lectures are only useful if you have insomnia and need something to put you to sleep quickly. Avoid this prof if you can!!!
Worst. Prof. Ever.
I'm pretty sure Chad has won "UBCO'S WORST PROFESSOR" award eight times now but he's actually only been teaching for two years. Stay away from Chad or your grades, health and general well-being will suffer.
I see that a lot of other people gave him a 1 out of 5. Don't get me wrong Chad deserves a 1 but I imagine that there could be someone worse than Chad so I'm going to give him a 2.
Chad is young and very inexperienced and struggles with a lot of teaching and grading aspect of things. I would go with a more experienced and proven prof if at all possible.
He was the worst prof I've had. wouldn't recommend to anyone.
Chad is an average teacher who has good notes but exhibits super strict marking practices. He has detailed notes on Canvas that will carry you through the course. Do the homework, come to class, and you'll get an A in this course. I was able to get plenty of Fortnite dubs while taking this class with him.
Didnt have a great experience with Chad. You should take with someone else if possible. Hard marker
Chad is definitely inexperienced and seemed a bit awkward in lectures, so the classes could've been better, but they weren't terrible. He posts all his handouts, notes, and assignments on canvas. If you are going to take his class, definitely take Math 220 beforehand as his marking of proofs on assignments is very strict.
Seems like people had a bad experience last year, but Chad has been a very good professor this year in Partial Differential Equations. He explains things really well and is pretty meticulous with how he presents things. VERY strong lectures. Wrote his own textbook for the class which was very helpful.
Chad runs such a tight class! Gives you so many resources to help you understand the material really well. He likes to make things challenging, but given all the material you have to study from, as well as how well he explains things in class, this is more than fair. Hope i get to take a class with him next year. Best prof this semester!
Honestly, this course is just hard, and he doesn't try to make it easier to his students that's all. He seems pretty smart and work hard, hope he get his ph.D.
Don't do chads tips for success cause I failed every assignment, invest in chegg cause the man wants exact answers and unlike engineering, or physics there wasn't anything of the sorts. I wish I read the warnings on ratemyprof before hand. Pass or fail I won't take his classes again!
Kinda a crap prof. Try's hard but in like all the wrong ways. Avoid if possible.
Chad is the worst prof on campus. he is so bad. kinda knowledgable but can't explain what he is conveying. chad is bad.
His classes are hard but he actually is a good prof if you know you your stuff and work hard. I think his bad reviews are from people who are used to much easier profs, like Wang or Broughton. You got to work for a good grade, but he has taught me very well this year. And he writes his own textbook for each class, with practice Q's, which is cool.
Definitely makes this course more difficult than it needs to be. He believes that his students have a higher understanding of math than the students in his class actually have. Skips through examples shown in class without an explanation on actually solving the problems. Midterms were too long for the time period and was unable to finish midterms.
Midterms were challenging due to the lack of time but the actual questions were fair. He gives lots of examples to prepare you. Course was challenging but overall Chad was not that bad. He does NOT try and trick you
Chad was a very fair prof, all test questions were shown in class and explained clearly in the lecture slides which he posts online, overall if you do the lecture problems and actually understand them this course will be an easy one for you
IMO, Chad Davis is a solid prof. Although he sounds really serious and sometimes a bit scary in class, he's actually a very nice person in his office hours. He is very patience in helping you so take advantage of his office hours! Only about 6-7 questions on the midterms and the final exam was very easy if you studied and did his online questions.
He is very start and his notes are very helpful. Although his lectures a bit dry and intense, if you come to the classes and do the problems, you will do fine.
If you are serious about math, I highly recommend Chad. I had him for PDEs, Complex Analysis, and Diff. Geo. He taught them all very well, with a high level of rigor. However, I spent more time studying for his class than two other classes combined. He writes out a 200pg set of notes which is extremely useful. I wish he would get more credit.
Not a good prof . Made me very uncomfortable the entire term and was no help with answering any of my questions. Do not take any class with Chad or you will have a very difficult time. Your grades and menta health will suffer . By far the worst prof I have ever come across. Beware. I wish I listened to others before taking a course with him.
Do not take a class with Chad whatever you do . His marking criteria is ridiculous and harsh. His lectures make no sense he talks in circles and his notes are not readable .
None of the stuff he asks on the tests comes from his notes. His lectures are bad, his grading is tough, and his tests are super hard. He expects us to learn high-level math on our own. This guy is the worst prof at UBCO for a reason. Please take your tuition money elsewhere and skip him or you will end up regretting it like me.
Dr. Davis is very open both during the lecture and office hours, and he replies email instantaneously. His class requires a lot of work and a deep understanding of the concepts since most of the things that he asks on the exams are not on the textbook nor his note. Overall, I personally think he is the best prof I have ever had!!
not sure why everyone seems to have a problem with the guy. He is incredibly knowledgable in his subject, he is very consistent in lectures and ALWAYS available to help (he was available for office hours for 7 hours the day before our midterm). He writes his own notes which are incredibly straightforward. He expects you KNOW your prerequisites.
I wish i could get past this guys attitude to want to listen to him for 4 hours... He is definitely not a "for the students" prof. If anything he seems like he wants to screw people over (him and his high horse). His lectures is basically plagiarism of the textbook. This can be considered a good thing in a way, since u can just read the text.
He always made himself available outside of class via office hours and email. He even stayed with me after his office hours ended to help me with questions. During exams, he gave a sheet of what kind of questions to expect and was very fair. Overall, go to the lecture, and office hours if you are having troubles and you will succeed in his course.
Chad's own course notes are very helpful, he gave detailed answers to conceptual perplexities and other problem-related questions by email. Class evaluations are according to expectation dictated by materials published and done with a combination of Zoom and respondus lockdown browser, which has been a good alternative to Proctorio.
I really had the worst experience with this prof. He is was too strict and doesn't let the students have a voice. Most of the stuff he teaches online is way too slow. Also, he doesn't take questions. He only allows 10 questions at max in an online lecture for about 400 students plus he never re explains concepts. I learnt more from youtube.
This is the second time I've had Chad. I am not sure why there are so many negative reviews about him. Yes, his expectations are quite high, but he is more available than any professor I've had to date. Always wants to offer his time, his hand typed notes are a lifesaver. Nice guy as well, just don't ask stupid questions!
Chad think's its acceptable to drop 4-5 hours of lecture material a week during online classes. He expects you to devote your weeks to his class and due to his lack of practical knowledge he depends on proofs to explain concepts. His notes are just a copy of the textbook with a personal 'twist' on them that often leads to him making mistakes.
Every Monday he'll complain about his 8 AM math class. He'll blast through all the materials without giving us room to breathe. It's so hard to keep up in class, especially in an online setting. If you struggle with mathematics you will need twice the effort. However, credit, where credit's due, he does post HIS lecture notes.
Chad expects you to know everything regarding the subject at hand, and will often skip proofs by saying "oh I'll leave this for you to verify" without hinting at solutions. He expects you to dedicate your whole week to his course and his course alone, by jam-packing it with 4 hours of lecture material, assignments and quizzes. Avoid him if you can
Chad is unhelpful and lazy. He has no way to ask questions during lecture other than the chatbox, and when he does acknowledge a question, he will refer you to the text. He will tell you to come to his office hours, which he doesn't show up for. He doesn't do examples, even though we have weekly exams.
My guy was fun and understood the situation we're in right now. Big plus to him, he emails back right away. Taking him next term for sure
3 lectures a week where he blazed through a ton of new material in very little time made it difficult to understand everything. Not to mention the weekly web assignments, written assignments, and tests on top of that. Tests in this course account for 85% of the final grade. Lectures cover basic examples while tests have hard ones. DO NOT TAKE THIS
Where do I start. I actually used to enjoy math classes before taking a course with him. Everyone is failing his class, and he couldn't care less. He doesn't even solve most of the proofs in his notes (leaves them as "practice"). He pretends that the material is challenging, when it's his methods that are ineffective. Possibly the worst. Period.
Great professor for Math 100 in my opinion. From my view, I learned a lot from his lectures that were recorded and posted as PDF notes. Chad is really organized as well. However, he does not seem too enthusiastic while teaching. Honestly, if you put in the work you will do really well in his course!
Chad is very straightforward; at no point was unaware of what would be coming on a midterm or final. His office hours were often; every time I used them he was very informative. He is not going to be incredibly chipper or give handouts, but if you apply yourself at all his lectures are efficient and his office hours make learning material doable.
Cons: - His lectures are hard to understand. I learned more from YouTube videos than his 1hour long lectures. Be prepared for weekly tests and homework. - Things move fast(not really his fault I guess) Pros: - He drops the worst lab test and the worst written assignment. - All lectures are recorded and lecture notes are posted for everyone.
Quite literally the worst professor I have ever had. His way of adjusting to the hard new online environment was to make everything so much harder. He should not be a professor, because he actually does not teach anything. He expects you to know everything there is about math and honestly you'd be better off watching YouTube videos. Avoid him.
Chad's lectures lead me to believe the material was much harder than it actually was due to his tendency to over complicate problems. He would frequently leave out steps of examples to "leave it to you" to decipher after class before quickly jumping to the next. FWIW he provided his notes and recommended problems per module for you to learn alone.
He is THE WORST Professor in UBCO. Teacher's job should be to help the students understand the lesson, but he is always using his "own language", which makes an already difficult lesson even more difficult. Also, please beware of his final exam, which he tells us will be easier than practice, but in fact, it's the hardest test I've ever seen.
He is the worst professor I have ever met. In class, he talked about lot of definitions ,they are difficult to understand, and no help on tests. The final exam is very difficult and his practice questions are useless at all.
Chad Davis, where to start? Honestly this professor will always be #1 worst prof at ubco in my mind. Now I know to check here before registering into course. Davis isn't kind when it comes to actually teaching the course. He uses a word doc to write out his notes in the weirdest fashion. I have yet to see an actual equal sign in those lecture notes
I would give him a zero if I could. Chad if you're reading this, please become a nicer person. Maybe then your rates will go up.
Lectures were very dry and were done on a word like-doc which were confusing and basically a textbook. Examples of topics and theorems were few which can make it difficult when learning online, and when asked to explain further he would say to rewatch the lecture later or didnt have time to do examples. Although he did post his lecture notes
Worst math prof I've ever had. Most profs will drop the worst midterm when u have FOUR, not him. He'll keep it, even though the exams were always more challenging than notes. It was so bad that he needed to release exam q topics so ppl would stop failing the tests. Would recommend for math enthusiasts who are looking to challenge themselves.
Chad's lectures and notes were muddled and difficult to understand, I stopped attending lectures after the first week. My good grade came from my high school calculus notes and the textbook, which had much simpler explanations. He sucked all the joy from one of my favorite subjects. Very disappointed in the teaching quality, do NOT take his class.
Davis class was quite difficult. I did well in the course, but this came with a lot of practice questions and studying outside of class hours. Davis notes were not the greatest and the majority of our marks were test-based. I certainly would not have done that well if he hadnt made the final exam as easy as he did, which was nice of him to do.
Though I will admit that his lectures were quite dry at first, later on he actually allowed us to participate more and his proofs were really fun to follow. His lab tests were really easy, he asked the type of questions on webassign, so if you studied you did really well. He also held a lot of office hours and extra tutorials, so he's helpful!!
This professor is dry with lectures, he gives little detail about any of the tests, and when it came to the final exam he didnt inform us about the layout and structure of it until a few days before, unlike the other professors of the same class. He rarely had his chat box on in zoom which was unfair if you had a question. Overall difficult prof.
Professor Chad was always available outside class by holding multiple office hours per week, answering emails promptly, and even by being active on Discord. The major concern however is that his teaching style is not engaging. To succeed in this class, I advise you to study the topic in-depth before class and then attend the class for revision.
The topics of the class are really challenging (are all related to probability and distributions). The good thing is that he is available outside class and has a lot of office hours. His assignments are difficult but if you go to office hours you will be able to do them. If you have time try to do the exercise of the book.
I stopped attending lectures in September and used old highschool notes and youtube to learn the content. His lectures are confusing and I have never learnt math in the way he presents it (a written document). His tests were very easy to pass if you practiced the assignments well. You have to be brave going to office hours, he's intimidating.
I found the lectures to be super dry and boring, his notes were all over the place and I found it quite confusing. I was not super strong in the class already and so I felt like I had to teach myself what we were learning.
Chad Davis was a horrible professor. He does not care about his students, as well his lectures make no sense whatsoever. His lectures look like English documents. He expected the student to know all the material before coming to the lecture. Would not recommend taking his class ever.
I feel he is a good revision professor. If you have done Calculus before and are confident with the depth of it, I think you will ace his class. All Indian kids who have taken the board of CBSE or have studied for the Joint Entrance Exam will find this course relatively easy.
Chad was the worst prof I have had. His lectures were hard to follow and were dry. I learned from youtube and old highschool math notes. He talked down to his students. He is negative. It was expected to know knowledge that wasn't taught in high school. Overall I was very disappointed with this class. DONT take this class.
Professor Chad's teaching style is quite different. Was comparatively easy because of pre-knowledge and was good revision. Could be a bit fast for others. But overall, was a good match of math professor for me.
TBH Chad's lecture style online is Not Great, but he was SUPER accessible outside class (literally every single day, any time). Class can be rough without high school calculus, but if you go over his notes and work hard on the weekly assignments, you can do well. No midterms, just weekly lab test/quizzes, final was definitely doable.
Chad is not a very caring prof. He does not take criticism on his lectures very well. He types and codes throughout the entire live lecture and it makes it extremely difficult to focus. He only types out notes and never writes or draws them out, and in math, it is extremely difficult to learn from a paragraph rather than seeing the work done.
Chad's a great guy, he just makes it clear he does not have the time or energy for bs. If you put in honest work and effort, he will go the extra mile to make sure you understand and do well; however, if you ask dumb questions be prepared for a response you won't like. Chad is only for those who try hard and want to do well.
Last term for math 100 Dr. Davis was getting quite a few comments that he was going too fast, didn't do enough examples and didn't answer chat questions. I TRULY have to give him props. Now he consistently does a variety of examples, takes time to read and answer questions, and definitely slowed down. A HUGE plus is that he emails back right away.
This prof does not seem like he cares about teaching at all. The fact that he codes his notes are pretty fascinating to watch but other than that his lectures are dull and I do not grasp any conceptual information or ideas due to the fact that he basically just reads off the notes. I spend more time watching profs on youtube then his lectures.
Chad is a good professor. A little bit too cool, but you can feel that he has enthusiasm towards the subject he is teaching. For those people who have a passion for mathematics or computer science, I strongly recommend taking his course. Also, I also appreciate that this prof is not a tough grader. Attending his lectures is an enjoyment.
I thought that he did a great job on preparing you for exams and was super helpful during office hours.
Great Mathematician, not such a great teacher.
His lectures weren't amazing since he coded his notes instead of just writing or typing them out but other than that he was pretty good. Very accessible outside class and put lots of time and effort into developing a good course.
Chad likes to write his lecture notes in class so trying to write notes while he's copy pasting and typing his own out made it quite hard to his notes down. He was super accessible though outside of class so if you had questions you could as him although he did come across as condescending at times.
Chad had a lot of office hour availability and I found he was helpful and good at explaining things. Detailed breakdown and explanation of each mark given on all exams. My only complaint is that I like to write notes and found it difficult to follow along with the amount of text typed out during the lectures.
His notes and explanations was the core of the problem - his notes were convoluted and were typed with little to no visual examples (graphs, pictures, etc.) making concepts hard to grasp. I found myself watching youtube videos to better explain an easy-to-understand concept in less than 10 minutes.
he is a solid teacher coming from someone who is not always good at math, the assignments are worth a lot and are super long but doable , and the online homework was super easy. He sent an email just about everyday and often it was a useless email to correct something he said in a previous one which was a bit annoying.
i took his math 100 class too which was easier than this one, this one was fine but he jammed a lot of content into the last two lectures and we did not have any assignments to test our knowledge on it. I was doing solid in the class (a/a-) and them the final plummeted my grade which was shocking considering how much i studied. class average was 66
Chad gets a lot of bad ratings on here but I had him for Cosc 221 and Math 221. While he took notes using LaTeX in cosc 221, he switched to written notes because of student feedback in math 221. Chad seems cold at first but he does care and if you follow his test objectives and study, getting an A is quite easy in his classes.
Really nice guy.
Prof Davis is a nice guy if you go to his office hours, however his teaching style is totally different and explains things in a complicated way
Chad is a nice guy outside of class, however, I would not chose to have him as a teacher. He pushes through material very fast, and does not do a great job at breaking down the material. He words things weirdly and intern makes his train of thought hard to follow.
Chad Davis makes it difficult to understand and grasp simple mathematical concepts that can be easily understood using simple explanations. Uses a lot of difficult terminologies and explains too much theory in a complicated manner. Avoid at all costs.
Chad was a horrible teacher. He made his sentences so convoluted and rambled about things that didn't pertain to actual class objectives, which made me confused about what I was actually supposed to know/write down. He expected you to know things before he taught them and made you feel stupid when you asked questions about content being taught.
He is bad at explaining and answers questions condescendingly. Lecture notes and recorded lectures are not posted anywhere to access outside of class. The notes are written in confusing, run-on sentences and are not similar to the test material at all. The only way to do well is if you routinely attend tutoring or have learned the material before.
One of the worst classes I've taken. It doesn't matter if you have or haven't taken calculus in high school his lectures make the material so much more confusing. He really doesn't explain things well or talk clearly and if you don't understand something he makes you feel so bad about it.
Assuming you already have a full understanding of course material, Chad is a solid prof. However, if you struggle with understanding concepts, you will find the lectures to be nearly useless. He tends to skip steps and breeze through all but the hardest of concepts. I attended a different section w/ a better prof for the 2nd half of the semester.
Personally, Chad was a gem. Solid teaching, no nonsense. He's extremely helpful outside class but seems intimidating. 8/10 would take his classes again.
I find Chad gets too much hate. I can see why, but I think many students don't realize that he's just prooving something half the time. I found the midterm and final fair. One thing: he could be less condescending when expecting answers to his questions and loosen up a little. Overall, I found his lectures to be the real deal and I took away lots!
I enjoyed Chad's class. I think people hyper-focus on his paragraphs but usually he is just introducing a subject. Chad can definitely be pretty blunt when answering people which made me not want to ask any questions. But, the exam and midterms were totally fair if you showed up to the lectures and there were some bonus marks which was nice.
Save yourself some time and just go to Paul's (or any other calc prof) lecture if you can't switch profs. Chad takes simple material and twists it into the most confusing thing you'll ever see. Midterms and finals were fair, however you gotta learn most of it yourself cuz you certainly won't understand it from Chad. Also- dude's quite condescending
Chad is a no-nonsense prof. Students who haven't taken calc before will have a hard time understanding that Chad is a pure mathematician who likes to prove things without explicitly saying so most times. I learned a great deal from his lectures and feel like I understand the concepts on a deeper level. Didn't feel welcome answering his questions...
Awful prof, awful class. If you don't already know calculus, you will definitely struggle. Lectures are very unhelpful, but it's the closest you will get to knowing what's going on. Don't be surprised if this class tanks your GPA
Find another professor. Chad is incredibly condescending, and rude when answering questions. His lectures are just him writing paragraphs instead of teaching how to actually solve questions, wastes so much time on useless material and ends up confusing everyone in the process
Chad had informative lectures for MATH 312. You can tell this is a subject Chad enjoys immensely. The assignments can be very challenging. Most problems can be solved using lectures notes. The tougher problems can be annoying with the amount of time needed to figure out. He also likes to crack jokes with a desert dry style of humor.
If you haven't taken Calculus before, my recommendation would be to find another professor. Having never taken Calculus before, I found it extremely difficult to adapt to the heavy workload, confusing examples, and condescending attitude. However, I found his tests to be fair, and his lectures can be entertaining at times.
Chad expects you to know most of the content before even teaching. He does not take the time to explain things and gives terrible definitions that just confuse you even more. He rushes through course content and examples and talks down to you if you have any questions. Would not recommend having him as a professor!
Didnt enjoy my class with Chad, his lectures were extremely hard to follow and his teaching style is very abrasive. Was entertainingly condescending at times and didnt seem to have time to answer questions thoughtfully. Take this class with another prof but if you must watch organic chem tutor/khan Academy and youll do fine in this class
This man made me unlearn everything I learned in calc 12. No joke I come to his class knowing my stuff and I leave confused af. If you took calculus in high school I recommend not even paying attention to his lectures because he literally messed with your brain. 10/10 would not recommend
His class this year involved a decent amount of pre-written slides, and he would spend a lot of time verbally explaining concepts, which is something that didn't work for me. He talked relatively quickly so it was hard to take in everything that was being said. There were lots of resources made available online to practice which I found helpful.
Overall, a very good prof. Cares about their students. Easily accessible outside class.
He's cheeky. His lectures are good, but I didn't find them too useful. On the other hand, his course notes are fantastic and beautifully made. He also provides practice midterms and finals, which were invaluable to me.
Prof Bulmer taught the MATH100 content super clearly and was always willing to answer any and all questions. The only thing is that the midterms and final are weighted heavily and there are few assignments between them to bring your mark up. But, as long as you pay attention in class you'll definitely do good!
Chad is a very different professor, he tends to wander during lectures and goes into too much detail for a first-year course. He spends too much on theoretical calculus and on fourth year-calc. I had the luxury of taking calc in high school so I knew all the curriculum, but his teaching style left many confused and lost.
Very uncaring prof, doesn't care if the entire class failed, offers little help at his office hours, can't read his notes. Clear outcomes however.
I consider myself a very strong math student, I received honours with distinction for pre calculus, however, in this course, it was so disorganized & confusing that I had to withdraw from fear of failing. Chad expected us to already be experts at calculus concepts, & he didn't explain anything- he simply jumped into examples and made us copy it.
Great professor. He writes out the notes in class, so we know exactly what to write down and what graphs/diagrams to draw. He also writes out the steps we need to take to solve a problem, takes us through examples, and tells us which theory/rule to use for which part of the equation. Answers students' questions in detail/demonstrates immediately.
His course helped me understand differentiation more clearly than I ever had before.
A lot of people seem to not like him but I found him to be a great professor, he comes off pretty abrasive at first but he really does care about his students and their success and is always around after hours to answer questions. His lectures are logical and his tests are fair with lots of chances for little points and bonus questions.
Chad is very enthusiastic about the topics covered which makes it more enjoyable to learn. He will continue to do practice problems while on the phone with IT, as the show must go on. His lectures are really good and his sense of humour is impeccable. Also, he plays Dark Souls
Amazing professor, I have no idea why he's rated so low. His tests are extremely fair and he provides great practice exams so you know exactly what to expect. Highly recommend if you learn better by watching math problems get solved without much explanations.
His classes are hard, but he does give you every resource you need to do well (practice problems, practice exams, strategy guides, HEAVY hints on exactly what questions he will be asking) if you choose to use them. He's also available outside of class, either in office hours, by email, or on the school discord.
He's generally a really funny and great guy to have a conversation with, but his lectures are solely theory-based and can be super confusing for students who haven't already taken a calculus class. This class was extremely difficult for me with a learning disability. :(
Chad has a very dry humour, and I say that in the best way. He gives as many part marks as he possibly can, and he tries to give you grading options that will boost your marks. He’s only ran out of paper once. He is consistent with his syllabus. He provides midterm and exam practice material that is accurate to the tests.
The class was painfully boring and his notes were extremely confusing. Told the class he didn't care if we failed.
good dude
Teaches material as if it's your first time ever hearing about this stuff. Doesn't expect you to have a lot of background knowledge, and explains steps in detail when working through examples. Lectures can be pretty boring because of this. Never found myself searching stuff up because he provides every resource you need to succeed in this class.
You must have heard that Chad Davis is a bad professor but I believe that now he has definitely improved his teaching style, his exams are straightforward on what he teaches in class, he goes through a lot of example in the class. You should definitely give him a try , he has became a best prof.
He was very accessible outside of lectures. Had office hours every second day. If you want to do good in his classes you easily can you just have to put in the work. There was an exercise book that you could do extra practice. Overall he was a great teacher that was very helpful if you asked for help.
peope say chad davis sucks but honetlsy in my opinion hes not that bad. He teaches very straight forward, but does skip many steps. his tests are very fair, you do not get anything on the test that you didnt learn in class. He does go very fast and might be hard to keep up, and when you ask him a question he can make you look stupid. funny guy tbh
An amazing professor. He cares about his students.
Took his class in Winter'21. His tests are fair, and he gives out tons of practice materials ahead of tests. He's accessible outside the class. He also uploads all of his lectures online so you can review them. He doesn't mind if you skip his class. I don't know why he gets so much hate.
He's a great prof if you learn best from examples because that's mainly what his notes are. He gives out practice tests which contain very similar questions to what he gives on exams so if you can do those you should be fine. Do watch his lectures because he explicitly states what bonus questions will appear on exams and how to solve them.
Chad is the worst prof ever.... period, UBC please remove him he absolutely doesnt seem to have the qualities required to even be a tuition teacher, so cold and boring it is obvious he is just there for the money doesnt reply to emails ever.
His lectures are example heavy, so if you pay attention during his lectures you should be fine. He also makes and distributes practice tests and revision materials before exams, which are really helpful to go through.
I had math 100 and 101 with chad and once I got used to the way he taught, he was awesome. just take down lots of notes in class, he over complicates definitions so don't focus on those too much, buy pay attention to his in-class examples and write them down. just follow his practice tests and use his office hours to ask questions about assignments
Very good prof, don't understand all the negative reviews.
Very nice!
Great Prof!!!! Love the vests: quite a character.
Heavy homework, does not explain the derivative concepts well.
Difficult material but he explains it well. He does go fast for some students, but he posts his slides AND the notes he writes in class. He is a hard, but fair, grader. There is one assignment a week, plus the lab assignment. His office hours are helpful as well.
I can tell you one thing about Mr Davis and one thing only. He is INCREDIBLY into math. I don't think he likes students or cares all that much about them, but he LOVES math and is happy to talk about it at least. I'd say the vibe I got from him is that he is a very very good teacher who could not care less about his students. Only math.
Chad's class was great, not quite sure why he's had so much negative feedback. He makes good use of the full 50 minutes of the lectures - I know some students who were in other Math 100 classes that would occasionally attend chad's lectures just for the extra help. His class notes posted on canvas were very helpful too.
Extremely difficult prof and not the most approachable person but he definitely wants everyone to learn and is always willing to help.
Good prof, don't understand the negative ratings. Gives lots of practice material, and practice exams were very accurate to the actual exams. Also uploads all of his notes to canvas which is very useful. Not super approachable but very accessible in terms of office hours. Lectures are theory heavy, sometimes overcomplicated but still good
If you're going into Math 100 without taking any calculus class previously, prepare to struggle. Every lecture feels like he's trying to speedrun the lesson. He can be bad at explaining new concepts, so if you're unfamiliar with calculus, you'll end up teaching yourself a lot of concepts and most likely will struggle.
I took math 100 with chad and I am currently taking math 101 with him, he is a great prof. Read his notes before class and he follows them almost word for word, that helped me a lot in the class. He loves math and you can tell. Sometimes he doesn't understand that something is difficult but other than that I would recommend him to everyone.
I do not agree with the negative reviews Dr. Davis gets. He is one of the best professors at UBCO for Mathematics. He truly cares about the subject, how you do in the class and his lectures are extremely good, he goes over proofs in detail and knows his stuff in and out. Don't listen to the reviews, especially for upper year courses.
I took him for calculus and really enjoyed every single lecture. He is definitely a great guy, further giving midterm and final practice papers, which are really helpful for the final preparation. Only tip, no matter what, don't miss the lecture and for God sake review your class work after every lecture and practise the different type of questions.
Math 101 was a very challenging course. Even after taking AP calculus in high school I struggled with the material in this course. He overcomplicates his explanations of topics and expects everyone to memorize proofs for exams.
Chad provides lots of practice material for the class and lets you know what kind of questions will be on the midterm and finals. Recommend going to every lecture, reviewing the class material every week and completing the practice midterms. He thoroughly goes through multiple practice problems in class which is extremely helpful.
I have taken 5 classes with Chad and I think he is a great professor. To think about it, I have taken a class with him at each 100 level, and it has been super easy to walk into his office multiple times a day to get doubts clarified- without having to think twice. Always pushes to your limit and is there to encourage you when you need it- 10/10!
Lots of people give Chad a low rating because they are bad at math and want to blame someone. He is a good professor and goes over the material thoroughly. Whenever there is a topic that is likely to be part of a midterm or final, he often lets us know. Math is a tough subject so be prepared for a decent workload, but he is a good professor.
Harder prof imo (compared to other MATH 101 profs), but hes a solid man. Kind of an odd ball tho. Take Javad if you want a really good mark (honestly). This mans tests are solid, midterm is harder than them. Just dont fall behind on the content, and try to really understand it.
aovid him!!! he has very strict grading rubric!!!very strict!! that is really tired just for taking notes during lectures thats a lot!!!!
He's the better math100 prof (after comparing with 25+ people). Good lecture examples and he gives practice problem. DO THEM. His lectures move really fast and are jam packed with info. Easier if have taken Calculus. He's a quirky dude. Be prepared :). Don't ask stupid questions. There's always one kid don't be that person he'll be done so fast
Good class; good prof - JG
Pretty average experience. Lots of proofs. STAT 303 is not an easy course- but Dr Davis knows his stuff and provides clear steps to problems. Assignments were challenging and time consuming but plenty of office hrs for help. Tests were fair but not easy.
Chad is a decent guy, but he's an extremely tough prof with a hard exams. While Stat 303 is difficult, he made it unreasonably so with how many formulas we had to memorize especially for the final. Completely defeats the purpose of the course.
Honestly I have never met a professor who took so much notes. Each class was very exhausting because you had to keep copying notes until the class was over. But as long as you understand his notes, you can still get a good grade. His quizzes are not easy and you will hardly have any time to check. He is strict, but he is also a good man.
For higher-level math majors/minors, I believe Chad is a great prof. His lectures clearly build off one another with ample examples. However, sometimes the class can be hard to follow as he chugs along in a proof while you are still trying to understand step 2. Weekly quizzes that are not too hard if you are staying up with the content.
I think Chad was a great professor. My biggest regret would be not taking him for 101. For MATH 100, his quizzes were easy, and he provided us with sample papers before hand. During lectures, if a topic was important enough for final, he would inform us before hand about the weightage of that topic. pretty chill guy too.
I really liked how Chad ran the course. Instead of midterms we had 7 weekly quizzes, & assignments were marked based on participation instead of correctness. He also wrote his own document as a reference throughout this course which I found very easy to follow along. Lectures explained everything very well and there were no surprises on the exams.
Chad's MATH100 class is a challenge, but engaging with his structured system pays off. His lectures are dense, so reading the textbook and using resources like unstuck AI for study prep are key. Tough but rewarding if you put in the work.
As someone who is not really a math person taking calculus could have been a much worse experience. He teaches the course like he enjoys the material and he wants you to like it as well, made sure we knew about different help centres, good sense of humour and told us what kind of questions would be on the tests and how he would try to trick us.
Honestly a passionate prof and probably the best prof for first-year math. He seems very enthusiastic about what he's doing and marks super fast. Chad talks an awful lot and writes a lot of notes which can be very tiring but provided his extremely detailed examples and practice exams you're basically guaranteed a good grade if you study.
Dr. Chad Davis is an amazing professor. First-year calculus is a difficult class to teach due to the range of calculus knowledge in the class. He does a fantastic job at explaining everything from the start, and gradually working his way up. Additionally, his practice quizzes were very accurate to what was expected. His notes are the best resource!
Pretty great professor with straightforward lectures. As long as you attend the lectures, complete the assignments and go through his notes and practice exams you should be fine. We had a mid term and 3 quizzes (and a final), which is a lot; definitely more than any other course, but they do help practice.
I loved Professor Davis! He was quite entertaining and clearly passionate about mathematics. If you do the work and keep up with the course, you shouldn't have any problems. The one thing was the sheer amount of times he will clear his throat in a lecture. I counted 512 times in a 90 minute period.
easily the best teacher I ever had, he comes into class and genuinely cares about your understanding. I see other reviews saying he's a hard grader but its because he knows what he is talking about he wrote the textbook. if you like math I suggest going and talking to him as he will do everything to try and help you, calc 2 is hard you must loveit
Chad is clearly very passionate about his work. His lectures are good and easy to understand. Also, he made an entire 600+ page notes package for all of calc 1 and 2 that breaks everything down step by step. He writes all of his in-lecture notes on a whiteboard, so attendance is mandatory and he's a tough marker, but overall he's a great prof!
Best professor for Math100 and 101. Got 100 in both course. The course is easy, all you need to do is to do the practice Chad provides before quiz/exams. Everything is on it.
His class is challenging, but 100% worth it because it prepares you so well for the final.
Dr. Davis has a very unique style of teaching. While I loved his quiz system, his final exam was brutal but honestly fair too. The class is just hard. He also loves to regurgitate lengthy proofs in class rather than working through ones you would come across.
Misunderstood genius. He's insanely intelligent which makes his class very engaging and interesting. As someone who likes math, this is one of the best profs I've had. Exams may be a bit tough but he can explain math like few others can. Also lowkey really funny lmao
He is really good at going through many different examples of questions that we might see on tests. He is also very funny and cares about his students
This is the nerdiest professor I've ever seen. Not only does he passionately care about his subject you can clearly feel the expertise. Though he gets carried away in his lectures he is able to deliver ideas clearly, just need to know what to catch and what to miss
He is clearly passionate about mathematics and it shows in his teaching. He always points out common mistakes students make on tests and really tries to prepare us for them. He also makes sure we understand the material from every angle. Overall, a really supportive and enthusiastic prof who wants his students to succeed.
He's really really smart and passionate about math. He WILL yap. He does not make things easy for students, he likes to challenge them.
Tests are very hard, especially if you have no basis of calculus prior. He canceled the first midterm, making the final 65% of the total grade which only brought stress. Free textbook he supplies isn't very helpful.
Very good prof, doesnt make math any harder than it already is. Midterms and finals are very fair. If you bomb midterms like I did, you have the opportunity to make up your grade with the final. Weekling online math homework, and the occasional written. Do textbook practice problems and apply yourself and you'll do fine.
Very good professor. He will give you functional notes that you can use to preview, study, and review. His reply to the email is very fast. He is patient enough to give you instructions during office hours. Being careful with your writing is very important if you want high marks.
Taking this class with him was very enjoyable. I found the lectures engaging and it was evident he was passionate about what he teaches. The midterms/final were challenging but fair and didn't deviate much from the difficulty level of the practice material. He was easily accessible by email and gave helpful, quick responses.
Prof Davis is an intelligent man who loves math. I found him hard to approach in office hours because he is SO awkward. Still, if you need help, go to his office hours. Math is hard, so his lectures are difficult, but he does his best to make sure students are prepared for the exams. You're screwed if you didn't take calc in high school, btw.
He is a very passionate professor in mathematics but his marking is quite tough, but overall you will do well in this course with him as long as you know the material and have abilities to self learn, I wouldn't rely entirely on learning on the basis of chad and his notes.
Tips: 1)Don't skip lectures (even if you took calculus in hs, don't be cocky trust me) 2)First test will be hardest and you will learn chad wants you to answer stuff his way 3) Go to Chad office hours, he is actually chill 4)OPEN STAX QUESTIONS (lots of students forget these) 5) LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES (pick up your test; see what u got wrong.
Having taken calculus in high school I did not love the way he taught some of the concepts, he seemed to WAY over complicate things and then require you to do it his way on tests to get full marks. However, the midterms and final were fairly straight forward especially if you do the practice tests he provides. The final is worth 50% tho
I wasn't a big fan of the way he taught throughout the semester because I found he over complicated things and was picky about how the questions were done when it came to marking tests. There's 3 ‘midterms' and a final that's worth 50% but all of the tests were quite similar to the practice tests he provides. He talks A LOT and very quickly
Chad is so funny and seems SUPER passionate about math. however, he goes through his notes so fast that it's kinda hard to follow. if you take this course just make sure to do more practice than just the HW. his lecture style just personally didn't work for me
Chad Davis is a very smart man, but should not be teaching an introductory calculus class. His writing is often illegible, making it quite challenging to understand in lectures. When people would ask him questions about the material, he would argue and belittle them. If you're taking his class, prepare to teach yourself the entirety of Math 100.
Very hard class. Just avoid him if possible
absolutely incredible professor
Chad Davis is a great professor. He is very clear on what is expected of you and gives you plenty of material and instruction on how to do your very best. Be respectful and work hard, and he will help you get a good grade. He's also funny and clearly loves math, which makes attending class totally worth it.
