Dr. Emmett is an exceptional professor. He teaches his subjects with great knowledge and passion- inspiring. He's not the easiest professor in the world, but he's fair.
A great teacher. It is very clear what is coming and what you need to do, although the tests can be a little surprising. His slides from all over the world that he took himself, very knowledgeable on the subject. Also easily accessible. I just dropped into office and asked him a few questions.
Every student should have to take this class, Dr Emmett always seems to chipper and happy and passes that on to us. The tests take you by suprise but just do well on the atlas exercises and map quizzes and you'll be fine.
The first test took me off guard... It was very tuff. He askes about soil, and current events. In class notes are very important. Get in a study group with this class. Chad has been all over the world! Great slides!
Emmett's class isn't too bad, but be careful--he's not particularly intelligent and has terrible critical thinking skills. He'd be the ultimate teacher if there was a tourism class.
tests very diifucult. he gets annoyed at class easily. cool slides though
Excellent teacher. Very knowledgable and friendly. Great guy, not too much work, just study your in-class notes
Very knowledgeable and intelligent about material; the tests demand that you study the book and your notes, but he's very helpful in showing you what you need to study. He's very aware of the world and its situation, and insightful. Very respectful of students and their opinions.
I had this class once a week, Thursday nights, and Dr. Emmett is probably the only geography prof I could've sat so long for. He is so funny and moves the class along well. He knows so much about so many places, and his class always left me wanting to travel. Tests are not bad, and there's plenty of other points from assignments. Great teacher!
He is a really nice guy, who loves SE Asia. It is for this reason that his tests kind of catch you off guard because they do require you to know the details of the in class lectures. If you miss a class you will pay for it on the tests. Other than that it was an easy class and lectures with slides were very interesting.
BORING!! He is a nice guy, and I'm sure he's a great geography but NOT FOR RELIGION! You just read the manual, no new insights in class, and tests are awful. Too specific. Map quizzes, and you have to know exactly what town Jesus was in when he performed specific miracles. Not fun. BLAH!
I thought he was a great geography teacher!! Funny and very interesting. You look at abunch of slides of where he's traveled...its way cool and makes me want to travel. Just take good notes...tests are mostly written so just write a lot. And you have quizzes and assignments to help your grade. I liked the class a lot.
I thought Prof Emmett was very nice and helpful. However his tests are pretty hard. You have to know specifics. He doesn't give study guides. He just says, "Yeah, just know places and names. Have a good day." And then bam! You are out of luck, b/c the tests catch u off guard. Take it for the enlightenment, not for an easy A.
This is my favorite professor at BYU. His lectures are very interesting. If you take notes in class and study them, you will do fine.
Bright and enjoyable lecturer. Has many interesting photo presentations, which he uses to show you the world (he's been nearly everywhere). Tests are difficult. Atlas assignments aren't too difficult, but take a bit of time. Quizzes are relatively easy.
Great class, all I needed to do was pay attention to lecture and I got it. He uses powerpoints and has great pictures that describe what's goin on.
This was an extremely interesting class, and professor Emmett knows a lot about different cultures and people all over the world. If you go to class and take good notes then the tests are easy. They don't take you by surprise unless you don't pay attention and take notes. Some busy work, but not bad and totally worth it.
Interesting lectures. Really likes Indonesia (served his mission there). Spent about 40 mins on Australia and the Pacific because he spent about 6 classes on India and Indonesia. That bugged me a bit. Been just about everywhere. Tests are a bit hard but not too bad. Take good notes and go over the vocab.
Amazing teacher. He was one my favorites. Some people say his tests are hard, but if you study and love learning about culture, politics and geog then this class will be a treat to study for. I loved it. His lectures are very well planned. This is a 300 level class so expect work to do like any other 300 level class. Fascinating subject.
I learned a whole lot in this class. The text was the biggest source to learn from. Tests are not easy to prepare for, however. Class isn't too hard, but not easy.
If you pay attention in class and during the slide shows you learn basically everything you need to know. He gives study guides for the tests and if you fill them out and study your notes the tests are relatively easy. He's got a wierd sense of humor but is entertaining enough to keep me awake.
Best teacher at BYU. He knows everything about everything and never has a boring lecture.
Emmett's a smart man, but his class bounces around everywhere. He won't use powerpoint, but he'll break out a random overhead political cartoon in the middle of a thought (which destroys any congruent thought). Only writes a few words on the chalkboard, but talks too fast when he's excited to get any idea what he's talking about or connect ideas.
Really good professor. You will do well if you take good notes and have a study group for tests. Very interesting, funny, and sincere. Come to class to learn and participate and you'll love it.
A great se asia teacher... very passionate and visual. Uses about 4 novels instead of a textbook (and majority of them are interesting). Just do the reading, take good notes, and you'll do fine.
Amazing teacher! He knows a lot about other countries and cultures. He's Been to pretty much everywhere too. Lectures are super fun! Tests are hard but if you take good notes in class you'll be fine. Quizzes are quite easy. Everyone should take this class. BEST teacher at BYU!!!
I really loved this class. Professor Emmett is hilarious and he makes the lectures interesting. You need to take very detailed notes and would recommend bringing your laptop and writing pretty much everything he says. He prepares you for tests very well and they are not that bad. This class is extremely worth it and helps you know about the world.
Professor Emmett is an amazing teacher. I learned so much in his class. He was fun and easy to listen to. He's been everywhere in the world so all his slides are pictures he took himself. His test were fair, and if you study, you'll do great. I would highly recommend him for anyone. He cares about his students and is really flexible.
He certainly knows his stuff and has been everywhere. Lectures are interesting but drag on by the end of the semester. I never touched the book and only missed one reading quiz question. All they take is an intelligent guess. Tests were easy, besides the final.
He rocks. Class is hilarious & you learn so much about the world & why it functions the way it does. I ended up taking three classes from him. If I could have had one teacher for all my classes it would have been Chad. He knows his stuff.
This was possibly one of my most enjoyed classes at BYU. I loved it! Prof. Emmett really knows his stuff, and his lectures are pretty interesting. I never had to read the book. The tests aren't that hard, very straight forward, and the material comes from the notes you take in class, so pay attention.
This class was a HUGE waste of time! If you attend class, he only talks about his travels. If you don't attend class, you don't miss anything. The book is useless, seeing as his tests are completely out there. It's impossible to get an A simply because there is apparently "no perfect answer."
Professor Emmett overall is a pretty good teacher. His lectures are interesting and you get a whole survey of the world but what to take notes can be very ambiguous. His test are difficult in the fact that you never quite know what can be on it since his test are almost entirely lecture based. ANYTHING he said in class can be tested on. Otherwise,
This course?s biggest flaw was its poor organization. Professor Emmett is very exuberant but his lectures often meandered and he had an over reliance on antiquated media. Also a serious lack of prompt feedback/grades. In the few last lectures Professor Emmett used Power Point to some success which lends some hope to the future.
I became very frusrated with this class. For a 100 level class, it was too intense. If you are not majoring in geography, do not take this professor. It took FOREVER for tests and assignments to get graded and I never knew my grade. Tests are long and difficult and other assignements are mostly busy work. Very disappointed with class structure.
I'm getting ready to graduate in April, and this is the worst class I have taken at BYU. Extremely disorganized, pointless, random, unnecessarily hard and it took the TAs the entire semester to grade assignments and tests that we turned in at the beginning of the semester. Steer clear of this class!
This class is insane. If you are a visual learner, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Emmett does not write anything on the board or provide powerpoints and so it is mandatory to write down every word he says since it's all fair game on the tests. Tests are difficult and your success in the class depends on your TA. Super difficult for a 100 level class.
Professor Emmett is a great guy. He knows his stuff, but he doesn't always present it in the most clear way. Being in class is MANDATORY! He doesn't give study guides, the TA reviews weren't very helpful, and you just basically have to write down every word he says because it's all fair game for a test. Tests were VERY DIFFICULT. Good luck...
This professor goes off on wild tangents about all the places he's been in the world, and then TESTS YOU ON HIS TANGENTS! It's impossible to study for his tests. Does offer a wide variety of extra credit for his classes...is somewhat biased, especially when talking about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
I'm not sure why there are so many poor reviews. The class is easy as long as you attend his lectures, pay attention, and take good notes. His stories are fascinating to listen to and he is willing to help if you meet with him. I've really enjoyed this class and have learned alot.
I'm not sure why he has been given so many poor reviews...the class is easy if you attend the lectures, pay attention, and take good notes. He has fascinating stories to tell and lots of amazing pictures. He is also willing to help if you ask for it. I have enjoyed this class and learned a lot as well.
I loved this class. This is university you should go to class and take down every word he says. it's totally doable. And his stories are interesting. Don't need to read the text book, i got by great without it.
Prof. Emmett was awesome! I retook this class this semester and I am so glad I switched professors. Emmett teaches from experience. He has been all over the world and shared his incredible experiences with us. It was so rad, and even though he seems really quirky at first, stick with it.
Professor Emmett was wonderful. I learned a great deal from this class and would suggest it to anyone. There is a lot to learn about the world and he does a great job picking out the things that are most important for basic knowledge. Take this class!!
Prof. Emmett is a SUPER nice guy, and I generally enjoyed his lectures. However, at times, I felt as though they were a waste of time. He spends much of class talking about his own experiences, and it's hard to know what to take notes on and what will be on the test. Class google doc reviews saved me on the tests. Overall, he's good, but not great.
Emmett is super nice, pretty lenient, and has a strong testimony. Unfortunately, his class is pretty disorganized, and taking coherent notes can be a struggle because of how scatterbrained his slides are. It's pretty easy, reading the text isn't super important. Just study the maps before the quizzes and go to the reviews and you should be fine.
Professor Emmett is great! He loves this subject and shares a lot of really interesting information. It is a challenging class that requires you to attend lectures, take good notes and study a lot for tests but the everything you learn is really interesting and if you put forth the effort you will get a decent grade.
Professor Emmett loves this subject and it shows. He shares cool stories of places that he has been. However, his lectures are a pretty unorganized and it can be hard to pick out the important information. It can be hard to know what to study. You don't really need to read the book, but make sure to attend class. The TAs are really helpful too.
This professor is the greatest! You will learn so much from him. He's just a down to earth, quirky guy that loves his Geography :) lectures aren't that important, but are super fun to listen to. He has so many interesting stories about his world travels. The only "hard" part is the tests, but just take really good notes in class and memorize maps.
This class is manageable if your aren't a Geography major. Professor Emmet is nice but he sometimes gets caught up in his stories. He posts the slides he used for lecture but they don't really help because they're mainly just pictures he's taken. Go to the test reviews. Do the extra credit, it will help your grade a lot.
This is my favorite class I've taken at BYU so far. He's funny and loves geography. His tests are based entirely on the lectures, so you have to go to class, but if you do it will be no problem. I got a 100% on the first test and a 96% on the second test without ever opening the book. He also offers a ton of extra credit options.
This was not a difficult class by any stretch. There are numerous extra credit options, and attending the lectures isn't really necessary if you keep up with the material. Atlas exercises and map quizzes are frequent and add up, but are pretty straight forward. Professor Emmett is a genuinely nice guy as well.
One of the easiest classes at BYU. Go to class and Exam reviews then you will be fine.
This class is my favorite class at BYU!!!! I loved this class!!!
Fun and interesting class, great prof. He has a lot of personal experience with the subject matter. Definitely read the the book and study for all the map quizzes, but they're not bad. Class is useful and interesting, but don't stress if you miss once or twice. He's also generous with extra credit. I highly recommend his class.
Prof. Emmett is my favorite professor on campus. He is always so willing to help out with students! The TAs are also SOOOO awesome. Study for the map quizzes, know the terms in the book, study your notes, and you'll do awesome. Seriously though, Chad Emmett is THE GREATEST.
Professor Emmett is a great teacher! He has a lot of personal experience, so the lectures are pretty interesting. It's sometimes hard to know what to take notes on because he gets so into his stories. Definitely go to the review sessions and know the terms and current events that he gives you. Highly recommended!
This was a great class for a GE credit. There were frequent map quizzes that were definitely doable if you are willing to put in the work. I never read the textbook but did review it before taking exams, and did extremely well on the tests! Overall an easy class for a general, but does require some work to get an A.
I absolutely loved this class!!! Dr. Emmett was such a great professor. Take him if you get the chance. He was funny, and he was traveled everywhere. His lectures are pretty much based off of his travels and he always has interesting stories. I never read the textbook though. The tests are based on class lectures so go to class and take good notes.
Ugh. If you are great at memorizing maps and small details about someone's vacation then this is the class for you. Tests are very detailed and hard if you miss a lecture or happen to fall asleep. Don't need the book. EC and TAs saved me.
Frustrating class, but not hard. the ppts are confusing and the TAs are practically useless. That being said it is definitely doable and the grading is pretty easy. I didn't put in a ton of effort and got an A-, just have to study a lot for the tests. Make sure you go to class. Emmett is super nice though and clearly loves the subject matter
I took Geography 120 from Professor Emmett and he was fantastic. His slides were extremely interesting, engaging, he has great stories, and the class was a ton of fun. One of my favorite classes this past semester. Highly recommend taking Geography from Chad Emmett.
Professor Emmett was a really nice guy, however the class is pretty boring for the most part. The homework is easy and boosts your grade, the tests are fine if you get a google doc going. It's quite a bit of info.
His class is kind of hard to pay attention in, in all honesty. It's hard to figure out how to study for, though his exams aren't too difficult. His lectures are basically one long string of information... But it was a good class. Not the best, but still enjoyable.
Pretty easy class and cool professor. Little use of book, only used for defining test terms. Most test material comes from lecture, so attend class and pay attention. He posts the slides, but it's a lot of pictures that don't really tell you much. Newspaper project (long-ish paper about a certain region), frequent map quizzes, extra credit options
I love geography so I found his class particularly interesting. You have to go to class to do well. I found that all the notes I took in class were on the test, but not the power points. It demanded work, but I ended up with a high A. Take his class!
Easy class-- just hard to stay awake at times. Professor Emmett is really sweet, and he definitely loves Geography. The class is mostly memorizing maps and answering some simple questions with the book. He doesn't take attendance, but you SHOULD go to class to take notes, which will really help you do well!
Dr. Emmett is so sweet! He reminds me of my dad. He loves geography and has been everywhere! He is really interesting, but honestly sometimes it is hard to stay awake... The class is easy, just memorizing maps and then the tests are based on notes taken in class.... SO TAKE NOTES!
Super interesting class. Prof. Emmett has been EVERYWHERE! And he took his camera with him... his powerpoints are 99% pictures (that he took). If you go to class and take GOOD notes and do well on the map quizzes (usually fairly easy) you can definitely get an A! The newspaper project is kind of annoying but definitely doable. Good professor!
This class has been the best one I've taken so far at BYU. Professor Emmett is amazing and seriously inspires me to travel the world. He's super easy to understand and the class is not hard if you take good notes. His lectures are engaging and he is funny and really interesting. Now I'm thinking about majoring in geography. Take from him!!!
Dr. Emmett is awesome. That being said, his class is kind of weird. Basically, he shows you pictures of his various vacations throughout the Middle East and expects you to remember (mostly major) details. In that regard he was kinda unclear and his tests were a little hard to prepare for. Don't buy the book, it is online through BYU library site.
Honestly, if you are not a geography major I wouldn't take a class from him. The class didn't have a pre-requisite but he acted like we all knew what he was talking about. His tests are incredibly hard to study for because they are based on notes and his presentations are just full of pictures. Would not recommend for the GE.
Wow, this class was not fun at all. He gives you no guidelines on what to study for the tests, there's no study guide at all. He basically just talks about his trips to SE Asia the whole class period and tests you on the most random things. If you're looking for an easy A don't take this class. So not worth it.
Asked for a study guide for the tests and he said no because he didn't want students to think that was all they had to learn. He said to just take notes in class and to study the slides except the slides are 98% pictures from his trips!! Unless you really love SE Asia or take good notes, I wouldn't recommend this class.
Professor Emmett is a great professor. Passionate about geography and if you pay attention in class and take good notes tests aren't that difficult. Some of the projects can be time consuming so plan well. Pay attention to the grading criteria. Talk to him in person if you're concerned about your grade. If you enjoy the material its not bad.
This class is really informative, and Dr. Emmett is my favorite professor at BYU. You walk away feeling way more informed regarding past and current events related to politics and geography. Loved this class and loved him!
Has good grasp on subject matter but clings to some issues that aren't currently as relevant. Lectures are long.
Don't do it. He just rambles all class period while showing you pics of his vacations, then tests you on the most random of things - and no study guide. If you have to take him, make sure he knows who you are and suck up to him. I got things marked wrong on my test that were very similar to answers that others put... he just really didn't like me.
I thought that Dr. Emmett was a good teacher for SE Asia. He understands his material and will answer questions with confidence. I felt that I learned a lot in his class.
Professor Emmett is awesome. He's gone everywhere and uses his own photos in lectures. He's incredibly knowledgeable and qualified but doesn't sit on a high horse, but don't relax just because he's a laid back professor. You still need to study for the tests, but they aren't too difficult. I recommend this interesting class.
I loved this course! Professor Emmett is the best professor I had on campus and he was super inspiring and thought provoking. I became a geography major in large part because of him.
Dr. Emmet is a super nice guy. However, he doesn't know how to teach. His class is set up in a way that doesn't make sense. His tests are impossible to study for. I recorded his lessons, took detailed notes, did the readings, studied for hours on end, and in the end couldn't do well on his tests. There are big papers as well.
Dr. Emmett was one of the best professors I've ever had. He's very approachable and I thought his lectures were very interesting. His classes aren't easy though. His tests are tough and there's some heavy reading involved but he gives plenty of easy points assignments to balance the grade. I would take a class from him again.
Dr. Emmett is probably one of my favorite professors at BYU. I loved his Middle East class and it significantly increased my interest in this part of the world. The papers for this class seem intimidating but they're not; if you do the reading you'll be to write extensively. I've taken 3 classes with Dr. Emmett and would take another one if I could
Political Geography with Dr Emmett has been my favorite class in my entire time at BYU. The lecture material and homework assignments are fun and super easy! Take this class if you love geography and want an easy and fun A.
I LOVED this course, Prof Emmett has a way of telling stories. I feel his lectures were very clear. If you focus on what he emphasizes in the lectures and study well you should do fine on the test. He really knows what he is talking about. but notice DOES NOT GIVE A STUDY GUIDE !!!
Professor Emmett is by far my favorite professor! He is so good at what he does and gets so excited about Geography. If you take ANY geography class, try to take it form him. He makes the material fun and personal along with just making the class a good time. He truly cares about his students as well. Solid guy.
Awsome lectures and fun classes. Quizzes are easy A's but the tests can be a bit tough. As long as you study fairly hard and attend class (even though it's not mandatory), it will be a solid A to high B range. Make sure to take good notes though.
great professor, covers everything on tests in lectures so you should go to class in order to do better on tests.
This class was pointless. Emmett is too about himself and all his "traveling" that he has done and that is all he talks about. Good luck taking notes because you will never know what to write down. Just come to class and catch a fat nap cause the only thing that matters are the test reviews given by his less than qualified TA's.
To begin, his whole system is wrong. He lets his TA's grade everything and he says to expect grading errors, so you really never know if you are wrong or right on tests. You will never know your test scores until 2 months after you take the test. His lectures consist of his vacations and then he will test you on things he never talked about.
great professor, really enthusiastic about geography. Tests over what is talked about in class so make sure you attend and take notes. Tests are easy if you study. One of my favorite professors!
My favorite class at BYU. I hate politics but he makes this subject fascinating! Tests are easy if you go to class and pay attention. Lots of focus on current events in the tests and the assignments. He gives many small assignments to buffer the 3 big test grades. Very kind and approachable outside of class.
All of the comments above are accurate. If you take notes in class, you should be alright. However, there is a lot of information about him traveling the world. It's extremely interesting, however, he doesn't reiterate stuff that is on the test, such as religion, physical geography, and language. If you miss it, that's it.
He does not give out any study guides for tests so you'll get to read every single one of your notes before the tests and hope you can memorize it all. The reviews are pretty useless and will only help you out with maybe 10% of the tests. The TA's weren't prepared. You'll wait at least a month for test scores, and then don't expect them to be fair.
I learned SO much from Dr. Emmett about the world! He truly loves what he teaches and his lectures are so good because he incorporates stories and pictures from his travels to help you remember important concepts. Take good notes for the exams and find some friends to study with. He is the professor you want to take if you really want to learn.
I love Dr. Emmett. He was funny and his lectures were so interesting. Take good notes in class because there's not really any words on the powerpoints-they're just his pictures. The test reviews were pretty pointless and the TAs took a really long time to grade anything. Do the extra credit because you can get almost 2% on each one.
Professor Emmett is passionate about his class, and knows his stuff. He's chill, and class is mostly lecture. There are map quizzes, but he tells you what to expect, so if you prepare it's easy to get full points on those. Same with most of the grades in his class. For tests I just used the textbook to go over the terms he gave us and did fine.
While Professor Emmett clearly cares about the subject matter and his students, that fails to compensate for his incomplete study guides, erratic lectures, and incredibly difficult exams that often include subject matter well beyond the scope of the class. Id love to have this guy at a dinner party but not in another lecture.
His syllabus made it sound like grading and things would be pretty harsh, but in the end he was really understanding and graded things pretty easily as long as you put in the work. I did not have to break my back to get an A by any means. Downside is he goes on tangents in lectures and it's not always clear what the take-aways should be.
As long as you go to class and take notes, the exams are not too bad. Pretty much everything on the exams are from the lectures, so I didn't feel like the online textbook was necessary and would not recommend paying for it.
He is a great guy but really doesnt do anything but talk about his mission and his own personal experiences. It is really hard to understand what he wants for his tests because of this. So I would highly suggest finding another professor for any of the classes that he offers.
Dr. Emmett really loves Geography and it comes off every time he lectures. You will learn a lot from him. He tests are extremely difficult, though, so take notes on EVERYTHING he says. Study really hard, and read everything he assigns.
I loved Dr. Emmett's class. He has been everywhere and has a bunch of really unique experiences to share. I appreciated that he was unafraid to tackle difficult subjects and I enjoyed his lectures. Tests aren't terrible, just pay attention and take good notes.
Dr. Emmett is a nice person and well-fit for his subject. However, his class does not encourage participation and he caters to students who are already politically-inclined. His lectures and PowerPoints are not clear enough to know what to study for the 3 tests. However, I now read the newspaper every day. I just don't like his teaching methods.
His lectures were great because he weaved his personal travel stories into the lessons, making them really interesting. The tests really are pretty easy if you take notes in class and read the textbook. And, if you need a boost to your grade, there are two extra credit assignments that ensure you will get an A. Great easy class all around.
The class is pretty interesting. Very lecture heavy and his PowerPoints don't have a ton of information in them, mostly pictures, so you have to learn how to take good notes for what he expects you to know and understand. Most of the homework is busywork tbh. Exams aren't too bad if you study. He claims you need to buy the textbook: I never read it
Prof Emmett is a good professor. His class was not difficult, and I enjoyed learning about the world. He can be a bit disorganized, and got two weeks behind in lectures at the beginning of the class, which made studying for exams a bit stressful. Coursework is easy; exam prep takes the most effort. Good prof, but a little stressful around tests.
Prof. Emmet is difficult because he has a very unique way of teaching. I hated it. It was all lecture, but his lectures felt coded almost. I had no idea what he was talking about most of the time because the powerpoints are just pictures of random things. You HAVE to attend class to somewhat figure out what the pictures mean. Gave hard tests too.
Dr. Emmett is awesome!! He is my favorite professor!! Just be aware the tests are pretty tough!! You really have to study and know your stuff to get a good grade. Attendance is key!!! Lectures were entertaining!
