This guy has a very nice accent that will get you through the first few lectures, but he gets so boring that he gets bored of his own lectures, you can tell. Not that exciting.
Utterly boring lectures, followed by exams that are supposed to be "simple" but are some of the toughest I've taken yet in the econ department. He makes some dry material even dryer.
I was really interested in taking the class because people had mentioned it being a good one. It ended up being really boring and the tests were seriously some of the hardest I've taken. The book & lectures might be the same material but the questions on the test are pulled from nowhere. He might have the knowledge but he doesn't explain it well.
It's like Finding Nemo, without the Nemo, and without the family fun.
an easy course taught by a bad teacher.... not interesting and made a lot of people suffer
Book material easy to understand. Lecture material not even close to as easy. Exam and quiz questions much more difficult than anything found in the book. Exams much more difficult than study guides.
At first, I thought if I worked hard at Econ I would find success. However, this all changed the second I stepped into my first lecture with Chad. He's boring. He does not prepare you for his tests. He does not answer emails. Even if you study for weeks, you could still fail an exam due to the trickiness. Do. Not. Take. This. Class.
I'm taking this class with 102 even though it's a prereq. Hogan will probably throw in some witty joke from time to time....he is boring. but it's worth going to lecture or else you will be extremely screwed on tests (that's if you don't read the text like crazy and didn't take econ 401/402) hence only half of class shows up...
I'm taking his class pass/fail. I went to the first lecture and none since. I read the book, but don't take any notes. I'm beating the average (which I don't do) by so much that I wish I were taking the class for a grade. I think going to his class actually makes you less prepared for the exam.
This first couple of lectures maybe misleading. He seems good at first but hes not even close. His lectures are really long and boring. (funny from time to time). He does not prepare you for the exams at all. Only half the class comes to lecture. You could study for days and still fail. All and all, dont take this class if you dont have to.
Chad's exams are basically impossible and do not reflect the practice exams. Discussion section was useless. I know students who paid for econ tutors outside of class, went to lecture, discussion, office hours, understood everything and then failed the exam. I had to drop the course. Don't take econ101 from him.
Professor Hogan is a wonderful professor. He is very clear in lecture and he takes time to explain concepts thoroughly. His tests are very fair and easy. They are also curved to make it easier to do well. I would strongly suggest taking a class from Prof. Hogan. You will do well and you will find his lectures very valuable and rewarding
incredibly boring class. he is not a very good teacher because he just reads his slides, which he posts after class anyway, so going to class is pretty useless. the exams are very hard and he will only give one practice exam, so its difficult to figure out the test. you have to depend on your GSIs for this and not all of them are that good
Do NOT make the mistake of taking Chad Hogan's class. I had to get a tutor, and he had to go over all of the assignments and practice exams (which are in no way related to the material on the midterms and final) and am still not doing well. Lecture is useless. The class is very math-heavy, so if you have trouble with math, don't take his section.
Absoluetly awful professors, if you get him for 101 drop out immediately as the other professors are much better. Very boring lecture, and his practice exams are worthless for the real exams. I agree that the positive reviews are probably from Hogan, because no one I've talked to has enjoyed his class at all. Save yourself the pain we've endured!
Wow. Prof. Hogan isn't a bad guy, he tries to make jokes and keep good humor, but his exams speak for themselves. He goes through the information very thoroughly in lecture, but then the HW assignments and quizzes are new information that we haven't learned just have to figure out by ourselves. Exams are extremely hard even if you know the material
Prof Hogan is a nice man but a horrible teacher. His accent entertains you for a while, but then lectures become EXTREMELY boring. Homework assignments and quizes have nothing to do with what he has taught, and the practice exams are way more straight-forward than the actual exams. Do not take econ with Hogan!
Do not take this class. Definatley agree with the other statements that Hogan has an inside on writing positive reviews for himself on here. Practice exams and lectures useless in preparation for the test, along with weekly homework assignment. Textbook is only helpful material but he jumps around so much makes impsossible to only use text. DRO
I am glad to be Dr. Hogan’s student. He is very articulate and coherent in lectures. I am having a great time exploring the principle of microeconomics in class. The professor expects a high academic standard, and he treats us like college students. His class is challenging, but he is only helping assure a bright future for all economics majors.
horrible, dont like the teaching style
His exams are impossible because his questions are worded so poorly. He seems cool the first day of class but the lectures are insanely boring. I hated him and the class. Don't take him under any circumstances
his exams are hard, but they are manageable, you will do fine if you attend his lecture, reading assignments are essential in addition to the lectures, good luck
Good Lecturer. However, tests are unfair and the grading system is more like "the students that do the LEAST badly get As, and those that miss more than half the questions get B-" I constantly ponder: is that really testing the material? What is the point of trying to learn if the tests are full of deceptive questions anyway?
worst professor ever. has no idea what hes talking about. my gsi explained all the lectures for the week in section, and did it 100 tiems better than hogan. he shouldnt be allowed to teach.
All other reviews are accurate. At office hours, when I expressed my and other students' concerns, he said to me, "I don't care." Hogan is an insensitive, inequitable teacher whose tests are duplicitous and inaccurately assess students' knowledge. He pathetically posts favorable reviews on this site. Steer clear, if you haven't picked upon that.

His lack of regard for his students is clear when he fails to answer multiple emails the day before the final exam. His tests are hard (the means were 72 and 62 for the midterms). Good class but poorly taught.
He was horrible. His practice tests were 400 times easier than his actual tests, making you think you were ready for the test (because you got everything right) when you actually were not. His tests were significantly more difficult than other teachers in the same class and he never explained anything fully. Take another teacher.
he was alright, tests are hard but I got an A just by reading the powerpoints and reading summaries in teh book. however everyone needs to realize all classes are on graded on a bell curve...so it doesnt matter how hard the class is but how well you do relative to others
Chad Hogan is the worst lecturer at this university. Do not take his class. There are always open spots in Malone or Gerson lectures, even if you might have to wake up earlier.
I'm not sure why everyone's giving bad ratings. He explained everything clearly and made his lectures interesting. Tests weren't that bad if you went to class. I didn't have him for 101, but I'd recommend his 395 class.
Terrible professor. Lecture puts everyone to sleep - most don't attend. Tests are not about understanding economic concepts, they are about decoding his paragraph long "questions" and finding the "least wrong" answer. Completely unfair and un-enjoyable... do NOT take this class with him.
He is really interesting, the subject can get boring sometimes, but you will do well if you just attend his lecture. Don't even bother to read the book.
There are several ratings that all share the same scores, grammatical style, and refer to Hogan as Professor Hogan or Dr. Hogan.
Hogan is the reason why I hate economists. His exams are impossible because he says things like complemental abilities, and complemental isn't even a word. I highly suggest that you drop this class instantly, and take another professor. He spends obscene amounts of time about very simple things, then skims past everything difficult. Terrible
Chad Hogan is pretty lazy. He walks into class late and sometimes does not post the powerpoints for lectures until a week later. When you take a test, he takes forever to post up the grades to the multiple choice exams... The material isn't actually that hard, but he seems to want to take up all of the lecture time and talks about random things tha
hogan is abesolutely worthless and has no interest wahstoever in being a teacher. His exams are the incomprehensible and usually its a matter of picking the least wrong answer to get irt right. In lecture you can tell he gets bored of his own material. He is so lazy too-- he posts answer keys to homework the day before the exam. way to go hogan
Chad likes to wear sweaters to every single lecture. the most interesting part of lecture was getting there early and trying to guess what color sweater he would wear that day. his tests are pretty hard but most people end up sucking so you can do pretty well since he curves them so much.
Chad doesn't really care about anything. He teaches straight from the book. Lectures are not mandatory at all to attend. He also has a tendency to post answer keys very late.
The pace of this class is much slower compared to other sections of Econ 101, so you are not getting as much information and will not be as well prepared for future courses. Professor Hogan's lectures get very repetitive and are very lulling. Prof. Hogan goes over base concepts but doesn't explain how to apply them to exam questions very well.
his lecture is boring. I only go to his lecture when I have trouble sleeping. and the exam is freaking difficult. must...not..take...this...class..
I went to U Sydney with Chad ('81), and let me tell you, he is a flat shrimp on the ol'barbie. I remember we would be drinking kegs o fosters and skinning sheep to make bales of fine wool. I sat in on his Econ 101 class this semester and let me tell you - he is as vivacious and vibrant as a dingo on the outback. FINE AND COARSE WOOL!!!!!
Okay, i'll admit this was a terrible class, but I thought his lectures were really clear. He's very repetative so if you can actually stay awake, you can't help but learn things. The problem is the tests have nothing to do with what he teaches. I felt like I learned a lot, but I still failed all the tests.
His lectures are slow, dull, and repetitive. A significant amount of people who actually went usually fell asleep. His exams really hard, so much that the curve makes it seem like you're taking orgo or something.
His lecture is not worth it and they didn't make a difference to my exam scores. His lecture slides are as repetitive. He covered material so slowly that we had to do the last chapter in the last lecture. He posted an assignment answer key to his verbose, confusing homework 3 hours before the final exam! He's an embarrassment to the econ department
Boring & useless lectures, MC exams, lazy professor, definitely one of the worst in the econ department..
never went, still got A+. lectures are repetitive/useless. hogan has the most obnoxious accent and an unpleasant aura about him. just read the book, do the homework, do the practice exams several times each (time yourself like in a real exam)... then getting an A is not hard
Really cool guy.Very patient with questions. And yes, he does not answer them in a vague fashion like some of the other professors do in the dept. So, all in all not bad. The kind of prof you'd want to learn econ from. Of course the multiple choice exams were painful, but that's the story with almost every econ class.
I haven't even been to lecture yet and probably won't until right before midterm 1. He'll probably have a review session (slow and boring, of course) like he did in 101. That's about the best thing i have to say about him. This post below is clearly him sprucing up his image before school starts. READ DEEPLY INTO THE OTHER COMMENTS. Ridiculous.
I feel the need for a second post to clarify that i got an A- in 101 so I'm not recently bitter from getting a poor score and thus posting negatively because of it. Again, read about 8 pages after this post to see a couple PERFECT scores (and grammar). oops...
While lectures, like any econ lecture, can drag on at points, his points and slides were clear, and chad was always willing to answer questions after class and in his office hours. exams were difficult but the curved is definitely a great help. actually spend time doing and understanding the hw and practice exams and you'll do fine
Awful. Terrible teacher. Exams were hard, lectures were stupid, and quizzes and hw did not help at all. Complete waste of a teacher. I will never take another class with him as the teacher.
Avoid him and the class at all costs. Pathetic guy.
Lecture is useless but he is very easy going guy and he'll answer question as clearly as possible but sometime it can get monotonous. If you go to his office hour, he'll be more than happy to help you out. Read, read, read the textbook. It's key to understanding the concept of the materials. Exams are very easy if you read the textbook.
I took this class and I thought that he was a great, engaging teacher. After I took this class I found out that a lot people don't like him and I was extremely surprised. He was a great teacher!
Pros: A lot of office hours were available; he did test you for the readings you did. Cons:Lecture was a little bit boring and could put you into sleep (it was 8:30 in the morning)He talked to himself a lot and forgot to change the lecture slides while talking.
I thought that this class was poorly put together and very difficult. Even the GSI said that the material Chad was expecting of us was too high for Econ 101. Chad was not good at explaining information in lecture, and the class moved too fast over all. But if you go see him at office hours he can be helpful.
Lectures a bore. Only one practice exam given out before exams = not enough. Concepts practiced through word problems until exam when tricky, hard m.c questions asked. On the bright side, funny examples and scenarios in the questions.
I had him for 395 and 310. He doesn't assign much homework and grades easy. If you learn easily from a book and by yourself, you will do fine. His lectures are boring and he seems disinterested. Final exams are based on the "lectures" and he expects some profound answer, so don't bank on the final.
In my mind he is not deserving of the bad reviews he has gotten from others. He is a pretty cool guy (boring at times) and lectures are not terrible. If you read the book you'll be fine. Midterms are very easy and the curve is ridiculous (in the 60s). A pretty easy course, not a bad teacher.
Lectures are boring, but its an econ class. Hogan made himself available whenever I needed extra help or needed to take an exam at a different time. He was ALWAYS willing to put in extra effort to accommodate me and his other students. He went over things in great detail so lectures were boring but if you went and payed attention then it was easy.
Very difficult class, but I came expecting as much with Econ 101 being a weeder for B-School Applicants....Chad's accent and teaching is hard to adjust to, and he seems generally uninterested in the material he is teaching.
I really enjoyed this class. If you go to lecture and read the material that is assigned, you will get an A. I thought that his lectures were interesting and engaging...I don't know why he has bad reviews.
If you can actually keep yourself awake and engaged in the material, I would imagine that the lectures are very helpful, although this would be quite a task. The exams were a bit ridiculous. The class is curved, so one can pass with minimal effort, but a good grade is hard to come by.
Horrible class. Very unclear in explaining concepts and does NOT prepare you for the BRUTAL exams! DONT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM PROFESSOR HOGAN!
Do Not Take Econ W/Chad Hogan
Geez. I don't understand why he receives such bad ratings. I think he's great for being so helpful. Yes. He might be shabby and sometimes boring, but then he knows his stuffs! The thing about his class is the lack of enforcement, so people get lazy which then screw up their exams, which is y people are complaining i think. But not his fault.
A brilliant academic and a good professor.Very willing to help students,I attend office hours almost every week. Lecture material seems easy because he explains it so well but need to seek outside help for test and hw.Bad reviews are from people who became complacent and never sought office hour help.Test are very hard.
SERIOUSLY not as bad as people say. i feel like alot people are grumpy from having to wake up at 8 30 am lol. but besides, he is def really passionate about the subject. Have him
overall, I would say that he is okay. I obviously would recommend trying to get in Malones or Gerson's class first, but it's not the end of the world with hogan. Reading the book helped alot, and his lectures are extremely boring. He has a thick Australian accent.
Yes. His teaching is very clear. The slides and notes posted are self explanatory and efficient. But hwork and test are very difficult. Need to put in effort to attend office hours. Office hours are great!!! If you try and understand all his hwork and ask questions during office hours, you should do fine.
First Lecture, could NOT KEEP MY EYES OPEN. Never came again. Try not to get stuck with this guy.
If you struggle with this class you're an idiot. Everything he teaches is directly from the book, word for word. No need to go to class. Ever. I'm an engineering student and had zero problems acing this course. Just read the chapters he assigns, take good notes while reading, and the tests are straight from the book and/or practice exams.
Although Chad is a nice person his class can be hard. There is no point going to lecture because you can just read the books or his slides on your own. Chad is a bit unorganized. E.g. tomorrow i have my final it is 11:00PM and he just decided to post problem set for and the answers.
the class was awful. chad is very arrogant and inconsiderate professor. (posting practice exams and homework solutions right before the final exam, being extremely late in getting our exam scores back: when they are only SCANTRONS!). he doesn't really teach you anything about econ/exams in lecture. do the homework, go to section, read the book.
Doesn't answer his emails OR his phone, leaving students who need to contact him high and dry. His lectures consist of him monotonously reading off his slides. Rather than testing economic concepts, he makes long-winded, page long questions just for the sake of it. More than a week after the final, we STILL don't know our exam OR our final grades
Over a week after final, and Chad has yet to give us our grade. He has no problem avoiding students during office hours, so much so that I complained to the Econ Dept about it and they said they understood my frustration. Honestly, an awful teacher who shows no passion for teaching and no understanding of economics.
Good professor. Sure, lecture might get a bit boring at times, but overall he makes the material as clear as possible which is what matters. Tests are very reasonable if you study the weekly problem sets.
I took this class with a genuine interest in the material and he is the reason I hate this class. He shows up late, cancels his office hours, is completely unhelpful and extremely lazy. He reschedules exam times at the last minute, never gets grades back quickly and is the most frustrating professor to deal with. If you can avoid him, do it.
Pretty easy & interesting class. He goes a bit slow during lecture which can get boring, but that makes sure you won't be left behind. He is very willing to help you in office hours, and if you can't make those there is a GSI available at additional times. Practice exams are very representative of the real exams, so there's no excuse to do poorly.
Slowest professor ever. He gets through about 8 lecture slides per class. Disorganized (he lost my exam). Doesn't answer emails. Either posts things late or doesn't post them at all (answers to homework, homework assignments, etc.). Fairly easy class, but if you screw up one exam, your grade is screwed.
Sometime in the middle of my second lecture I woke up from having passed out in the beginning. Everyone in front of my was asleep. I was on the third back row.
This is the most boring class in the entire world. I think i fell asleep in the first 5 minutes late in the semester. I think he really cares about the students getting the material, but he is so slow and not interesting. The positive is that he is from Australia.
extremely clear in his lectures which is why some people might find it slow. He really just cares that his students understand WHY these concepts hold true rather than just memorize the outcome. Highly recommend this class and teacher. I would take another class with him. I've learned alot.
I don't know how to describe his teaching style other than: you won't like it. His speech is distractingly long winded, examples unhelpful, and asking a question in lecture can be intimidating as on several occasions he was unnecessarily curt/rude with students' questions. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. If you must - be sure to go to discussion section.
Chad Hogan was not a good professor. I was looking forward to taking an ECON class and he ruined it for me. Don't take him. Wait until next semester.
In reading other's opinions, its obvious theres a mixed bag about professor Hogan. I have had him only for Econ 310, and I must say he is a better professor than most here would agree to. He is very clear and urges you to actually understand the background of various economic models rather than sheer memorization. Good class.
I disagree with these comments. Chad Hogan was a pretty good prof. I ended up getting a C+ in his class because I was violently ill during the final. That being said, he was really helpful in office hours, and pretty much clear during lecture. He's fun to talk to and encouraging, its not the end of the world if you end up in this class.
Hogan, is easy enough. His test are hard, but study and you'll be fine. Honestly there's a reason he is put out there in winter semester
Goes too slow, could NOT stay awake through one lecture. A lot of important things just got crammed in at the end. He won't ruin the subject for you, but he certainly will make it seem dull and have you reconsider a future in finance. Exams are fine, just do the problems & go to office hrs. Makes too many excuses for why he doesn't do this or that.
Most boring professor I've ever had. Once spent an entire 1.5 hours explaining 1 graph, on 1 slide, that you could understand by looking at it in 5 seconds. Easy class though if you put in effort. Doesn't respond to emails, ever. good luck staying awake in class! zzzzz.
The most unorganized professor I have ever had the displeasure of having. Posts exam grades weeks late, never responds to emails. Dont pay any attention to exam dates in the syllabus as he changes them all a week before exams. The only thing interesting about his class is his australian accent, gives the class a crocodile hunter feel.
he came in every day looking like a drunnk as...very irresponsible...the only good thing is the curve
Most unorganized professor I've ever had. Sample exams get posted the night before the exam, and that's the only useful resource he gives out. Claims homework will be posted one day, and it doesn't show up online until two weeks later. Homework is not helpful and not relevant to exam material. Lectures are somewhat helpful but dull. Good luck.
I have never had such a verbose lecturer. Professor Hogan manages to turn simple concepts into quagmires through his incredibly circuitous examples and lack of proper context. Take this class with Gerson or Malone. Our final lecture was on the same material covered in Gerson's third lecture.
The level of math they teach at is laughable. That said, chad's teaching style is pretty bad. He lingers on trivial topics, provides few examples, and gives out homework that is irrelevant to the tests which compose 90% of your grade. Learn the material from the book, not his garbage lectures, and find sample tests from StudyBlue or sites like it.
He's a nice guy, but his curriculum is a mess. He forgets to post homework, practice exams and even midterms. He fails to teach effectively in class and loves to talk too much.
I guess he is okay and helpful. He values understanding the concept and not just memorizing.
Explains things very slowly so good for slow learners, too repetitive and boring for most people. Slides are not clear at all, and the man is very unorganized and doesnt use email... On slides, says sample exam is up, actually posts it a week later, doesnt post the answers for sample exam, doesn't respond to email asking for answers. Overall bad.
I am disappointment by the value I get out of Chad's class. It is a waste of my hard earned tuition money. I strongly believe he should not been teaching, cause with his way of teaching/testing, I doubt that anyone's critical thinking would even slightly develop. It is like wasting your time and paying for it.
It's a total waste of my money. Try spend 8 hours on 15pages of hw which is too damn easy but repetitive and never shows up in unrelated exam and textbook. Wait, there's a textbook?Even a slide?Ok, you won.
His the teacher I really loved, especially the way he taught!Although sometimes the content is somehow abstract, but it really help me understand something~!
I respect him!
It is a relatively easy class and he did a very decent job!
Bad class. Sample exam questions/answers are sometimes posted just hours before the actual exam. Takes forever to explain a slide
He's not a very good professor but the class isn't that hard. You can read the textbook if you want, but what I did was watch chapter reviews and concept videos on Study Edge. They helped summarize everything for me and made it click. There were also practice problems that were VERY helpful and similar to exam questions!
Nice guy, lulls you into a false sense of security with this class though. Go to class, even if it's not required. This is a weeder class, and they're trying to trip you up. My 30% on the first exam -worth 30 % of my grade- can attest to that. STUDY HARD.
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He made my High School Econ teacher look like a genius. Honestly made me furious that I was spending 50 grand to attend this school. Do everything in your power to avoid this man.
he himself is helpful, but the lectures are just horrible, he only talks about fundament stuff in lecture and the exams are super hard. worst of all he doesn't give you additional practice exams (only one for each exam). i feel i'm learning 1+1 in lectures and doing integration in exams. don't take his class
don't, just don't take his ECON 101 class. He's a nice guy I'll take it, but his lecture is very terrible and not any helpful at all. I learn most of the stuff by roaming the internet. About the exam... oh, it doesn't even reflect what he actually teaches in class, so no wonder why the average is around 60%.
Terrible. Nobody goes to his lectures and goes to other professor's lectures instead. He really just doesn't know how to teach. If you're going to take 101, take it with any other professor.
He was the worst professor that I have ever had! The first time I attended lecture it took more energy for me to stay awake than to try to learn the information! He's incredibly confusing, the material is quite difficult, and he does an incredibly awful job of teaching! Avoid this professor at all costs!
He is a good professor. Hogan has office hours almost all days in the week even though he never reply to emails. He talks a lot and might get to repetitive but when you look for help or when you want to go beyond whats learned in class, he will always be helpful and demonstrate he really knows the topic. Overall a good professor, and an easy class
He is a great prof if your smart and get concepts quickly. No homework only exams for this class and they are really easy.
Don't know why Chad's got a low grade here. Yes, his lectures are boring, based on a few slides and he does get repetitive. But this class has got really interesting material and that helps. He's also super helpful in office hours, has them throughout the week and will sit for as long as you want and explain everything clearly, even for homework.
The worst teacher I have ever had. He's always show up to class fifteen minutes late and expect us to stay an additional 15 minutes after. His take home exams were ridiculously hard and tested concepts not learnt in class (also no textbook, so there was no opportunity to learn it!) I ended up getting an A in the class but it was stressful.
Amazing Prof!
Amazing professor
He is not a good lecturer. The lectures put me to sleep, and it's a good day if our class got through 10 slides in an hour and a half. The tests are very difficult, but his class is also curved to an A- so as difficult as everything is, it isn't that hard to do decent in this class
Nice Guy, bad teacher. Refuses to communicate in any way that isn't face to face talking or a phone call. Very unorganized with posting assignments. Tests are hard and have little to do with his lecture, more on the slides, which have almost no information at all. Won't shut up about Robinson Crusoe.
Chad can be pretty boring, as he tends to repeat himself a lot. However, the material is pretty clear and the class isn't too hard. Also, he holds a ton of office hours and if you have any confusion, see him then and he's really helpful.
not clear and redundant. absolutely would not take his class again
Chad is a great guy, and I think people are being too harsh on him. The class starts off on a slow note, but that has also to do with the material. It gets more interesting once the fundamental stuff is done with. That being said, Chad does like to repeat himself but I think he does that because he wants to make sure that we understand the thinking
It's almost impossible to rate Hogan. He does whatever he wants and goes at his own pace. You really have to be dedicated to Economics to deal with his lectures, very redundant and boring. The class has no assigned work. Five quizzes and Three tests make up your grade. You can tell this guy thinks he's progressive and brilliant but he's just ok.
Don't. Just don't. He believes that repeated repetition of the same repetitive phrases and material is the best way to get inside our empty skulls. What he doesn't realize is that he is just unclear, disorganized, and incapable of conveying simple ideas simply.
Whatever you do, do not take his class! The way he explains topics are overly confusing and repetitive and have little to nothing to do with what is on the exam. Take Econ 101 with literally any other professor at this school but him.
Hogan is a cool guy, but his class is pretty difficult. He throws a lot of information at you during lecture, without clearly explaining it. His slides are confusing. He's very unclear during lecture. The quizzes are hard, and the exams aren't much better. A lot of what's said during class isn't relevant for the exams. Take anyone else for econ.
his lectures are more like lullabies - they'll knock you out in minutes. but the content is easy and his exams are based just on his lecture slides. buying the textbook is a waste of money. he's a great guy, just not a very good lecturer. easy A if you go through the slides a few times before tests
he's nice. but he cannot lecture. he has a nice purple beanie though. if you just wanna read the slides and the book it's a good class but if you want a professor who is interesting and engaging don't take this class.
Contrary to others, I actually enjoyed Hogan as a professor. His lectures are horrible and I never went, but his office hours were great. He is always available and does a great job explaining concepts. Just read the textbook and do the review questions for each chapter. Make sure you understand the practice tests inside and out.
This has been the worst class and worst professor I have had thus far at u of m. Does not follow along his lecture powerpoints and does not change the slides to what he is actually talking about. 25 question multiple choice exams are the worst format to be tested on. Really looked forward to the money and banking topic, but very disappointed.
Chad is a really nice and understanding person, but his class was impossible. Even when I thought I understood the lectures (which no one attended), I had no clue how to do the problem sets and quizzes, forget the tests. But as long as you put in the work, he is very willing to make the effort to help you.
He's not great but not terrible. His lectures are basic but he gives you all the information needed to solve more complex economics questions on the exams. I think my class ended up curving so that an 82% was an A.
Chad is a brilliant guy, but not a great professor. He is awesome in office hours, but the line is always at least a 30 minute wait. He just rambles in class, provides insufficient review materials for the extremely difficult exams.
Chad's an OK guy, he's just incredibly boring and doesn't connect well with his students. Don't be surprised to get through 2-4 slides over the entire 80 minute lecture. Tests are impossible (testing Econ with 25 multiple choice questions is absurd), section is pointless (don't go, unless there's a quiz), and class is miserable. Try to avoid him.
Easy class, but impossible not to fall asleep
Hard-working and very well-organized. There is no point in trying to get your hands on past exam, quiz, or homework material, because these material are completely new and different each time. What is most important is to attend all of Dr. Hogan's lectures, which are highly engaging and enlightening.
lectures were boring and long. he repeated himself constantly and would spend 30 mins on one slide. most of this class is self taught- if you have taken AP econ its not too bad but if econ is new to you switch into a different section immediately!
Don't take this guy!! Lectures are terribly boring and dragged out, and he post study material for exams last minute. No joke, guy posted 2 separate assignments plus 30 slides of lecture notes 2 days prior to the exam.
His lectures are very long and repetitive. He does make himself available for many office hours if you need help though. I would definitely recommend reading the textbook before classes.
Horrible professor, you don't need to attend lecture at all, he doesn't put any effort into them at all. That being said, if you read the book, you can get a B+ A- easily.
I learnt a great deal about the principle of economics from Dr. Hogan. His lectures seem long and repetitive but that is only because he wants to make sure that everyone clearly understands the concepts. He is also always there for students and holds office hours every day! Thank you Dr. Hogan for a wonderful semester!
The worst teacher I've ever had in the history of schooling, but I still did well on the tests by taking old practice exams
Chad Hogan is easily the worst professor I've had at the University of Michigan so far. Lectures are beyond boring and cover material totally unrelated to the questions asked on the exams. The format of the exams makes them mind-blisteringly difficult and the averages of each exam leave you wondering how he still has a job at the university. AVOID
Worst class ever. After the first week about 300 of the 400 students stopped showing up. Lectures were so boring and basically made no sense. The average on every test was about a D but the curve saves you. Chad goes through his slides so slowly and never gets through all of the material. Pray you have a good GSI if you have to take this class.
Absolutely awful -- avoid!! But if you have no choice (as is likely because Econ 101 is usually oversubscribed), here are some tips: Don't bother attending the lectures; they're a complete waste of time. Get your hands on past exam papers and practice, that's by far the best way to do well, despite the contrary claims he'll repeatedly make.
No need to go to class. Just spend an hour to read the book before exam and you will be fine.
The kind of criticism Professor Hogan gets is unjustified. Yes, his lectures are not super fun but if you pay attention to what he's saying, he makes a lot of sense. You're in college to study so keep your ears open for the long lecture and you'll learn a lot. Must visit his office hours- he is more interesting and helpful in that sort of an env.
Chad Hogan is not the most clear or inspiring professor but he is alright. You really don't have to show up to lecture but it is certainly helpful. There are 3 exams, and 5 quizzes. The whole class is on a curve so it is hard to get an idea of your grade. If you are struggling you have to go see him in office hours and then he is super helpful.
Lectures are boring and he spends weeks hardly going over anything at all. Don't expect him to get through all the powerpoint slides. The practice exams he assigns are nothing like the real exams, so there's no surefire way of studying. If you can take Econ 101 with any other professor, do so, or maybe think about waiting a semester to take it.
Econ 101 is generally a tough course. Lectures very boring, hard to pay attention even if I wanted to. 3 tests, including the final. All hard. Quizzes like every other week aren't too bad if you know the weekly assigned problem sets. Tests are just very hard. Bombed first one and decent on second. Final means a lot. Bell curve kinda sucks
Worst teacher ever. He's rude and a terrible teacher. do not take his class.
Worst teacher I have ever had, tell everyone to NOT take him, talks around his point and never directly says what he is trying to. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
Chad was always more than willing to help but his lectures were very long and hard to stay engaged in. He would spend 45 minutes on one slide and NEVER made it through his entire powerpoint (of 10 slides) during lecture. I had to spend a lot of time outside of class teaching myself the material. Tests are unreasonably hard. Good luck.
Worst class I've ever taken at UM. He switched my Exam 2 grade with another student who did very poorly and it was up to me to get it fixed. Then for the third exam, THE SAME THING HAPPENED. (ALL MC EXAMS). Never take this class, you may not get the grade you actually earned. Terrible lecturer, his answer keys are wrong and "hopes" they're right.
this guy literally showed a bbc gangland during class...
Hogan was the worst professor I've had at Michigan. His lectures are repetitive, long, and insanely boring. I took this class because I was told it wouldn't be a lot of work, but since Hogan can't lecture for his life, you have to learn everything yourself from the book. On top of that, he makes his exams really nit-picky (and 95% of your grade).
Lectures are long and boring. You can safely fall asleep in this class because he'll spend half an hour going through four bullets on the same slide. He is, perhaps, the most boring man in the world
Avoid. Lectures consist of getting frustrated at his teaching style the whole entire time. Learned more from youtube videos than I did from the actual class. He makes things more complicated than they need to be. I was very interested in the material but Hogan's teaching style made me dislike it.
He drags on and on and on about stupid crap for the longest time on a slide with three sentences on it, then the problem set or exam comes and it's not like the easy crap he talks about and you have no idea how to do any of it. He also has the most annoying accent with the most annoying vocabulary. Expect repetition
If Economics was Top Gear he would be James May
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Lectures do not clearly discuss or define material in relation to tests. Problem Sets are extremely long, without clear answers, and do not reflect lecture. Quizzes are over material you haven't had a chance to discuss yet. Exams are extremely difficult by design and sometimes hold material not discussed at all.
Chad will help you, I guess. But he makes the material complicated and gives unclear answers. Half of the second midterm was stuff he never taught, and I went to every lecture. I recommend taking this class with friends so you have people to get by with. Though, my best advice is to avoid Hogan's class.
Really disappointed with this class, I would advise you to take another professor if you don't want to hate yourself every day
Our grade is basically three exams that are only multiple choice questions. The first exam was 15 multiple choice and the last two exams were 25 multiple choice. Which sounds awesome at first, but when the professor makes no sense in class and posts very unclear PowerPoints then it is really easy to fail the exams. Would NEVER recommend him!
Chad is probably the worst lecturer at the University of Michigan. He constantly repeats himself on material that is extremely basic and tests on a different level. Try to get old exams because he recycles his questions. A lot of questions.
Don't bother going to class... or the review sessions. I went maybe twice. If you want to do well, READ the text book, READ the notes, DO the problem sets, and by God get your hands on as many practice tests from his as possible because the dude recycles at least 5 out of the 30 questions per test and then formats the rest the same.
Chad clearly knows his stuff when it comes to 101, but he's a god-awful teacher. His lectures are extremely long and boring. He'd often have something like 20 slides to cover in a day and then only cover 10, since he got off on some tangent giving a useless example over and over. Doesn't follow any book, tests are worded poorly.
Hogan doesn't deserve a position at The University of Michigan. Course is incredibly disorganized and the man can't teach for his life. You will learn more on your own by reading the textbook. I went to class and relied on his notes and slides, which was a mistake. Better hope for a great GSI if you want to do well. DO NOT RECOMMEND. SWITCH OUT!!
DO NOT TAKE 101 WITH HIM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Your semester with be an absolute suckfest if you do. My 3 friends had to drop halfway through the semester. I stuck it out and got an awful grade. He can't teach. Got a A- in AP Economics in high school.
Oh God, Get Ready for a Roller Coaster. Chad can't teach for his life. Many drop, fail, and get horrible grades. Want Ross??? Good luck in Lorch with Chad!!!!
Worst instructor I've ever had. Doesn't use email, incredibly disorganized, and talks in circles. In order to learn anything you have to read the textbook. Lecture slides are incredibly unorganized. Tests on things not discussed in lecture. No point in attending class. He really should not be working at this University.
Sat through every class, did all the problem sets, attended every discussion, and went to every review session. Worked my butt off for a low A. Chad is very knowledgeable, but don't expect him to actually teach you what you need to know. The material and exams are unreasonably challenging. He does have beautiful blue eyes though.
The bartender at skeeps taught me more about supply and demand than Chad Hogan did
Professor Chad is an excellent professor and you will do well in his Econ 101 class if you follow directions. The only classmates I know who complain have skipped lectures, the discussion sections, and have not completed the homework. I suggest you ignore the previous students reviews and take chads class. You will not regret it.
Chad Hogan is a terrible lecturer. Economics is an interesting subject, but he makes it more dry and boring than I thought possible. He talks in circles about the most basic examples and concepts, then expects a deeper level of understanding for the exams. That being said, it isn't difficult to do well in the class.
Easy class just do the reading. Don't go to lecture and have an A.
Chad has to me the worst professor at the University of Michigan. The lecture hall was always questioning how he held a job at Michigan, rather than Microeconomics. If you attend OHs, be aware that you will have to manuever through his office, which is a fire hazard. Tons of old papers and exams from decades ago that he hasn't sorted.
I attended every lecture, every discussion, and went to office hours weekly. Chad was the worst professor I've had in my education. It is a shame that the UofM allows this sort of instructor. Avoid at all costs. And if any person in the economic department is reading this, please go to chads office (see the fire hazard) and have a chat with him.
Worst lecturer I've ever had. I took AP Econ in HS, and I think he taught me only 3 things all year. Cool guy in office hours, but during lecture you will want to poke your eye out with a pencil.
this guy is the worst. lectures are ridiculously boring and unhelpful. the tests are super hard, only three of them and each weighted very heavily.
Chad goes out of his way to meet with students and help them understand the material. The key to the class is to pay attention to the lectures, read the powerpoint notes thoroughly, attend the discussion sections having fully completed the problem sets, and if you need help, do not hesitate to contact Chad. I look forward to Econ 310 with him.
Terrible professor. He goes through three to four lecture slides per class. Then when it comes to exams he expects you to know everything when he hasn't taught the material. He is a awful professor. Expect to learn the material on your own. Most preparation for exams consisted of solely self teaching.
This is the worst class I have ever had. Hogan has taught the most important part of microeconomics in only the last two classes, and we have a final on all of it next week. He teaches with no direction and gives no motivation to go to lectures. Avoid his class at all costs, as the THREE tests you take in the class is almost all of your grade.
Great teacher, Funny, a great man overall. Really amazing.
Stay away from Chad. Having 5's on Ap Mic and Mac, I know what I'm doing. Chad makes lectures extremely boring (covering 5-6 slides in 1.5 hours) and only talks about the most basic ideas. Then, exams roll around and he asks questions that would be suited for 2nd or 3rd year Econ students. Do your gpa a favor and avoid him
Chad Hogan is nice and willing to help you outside of class. Having said that, there are much better Econ professors, and if possible you should take their classes. Why? Chad is one of the worst lecturers at the University. If he gets through 1/3 of his slides, it's a good day. This caused him to leave the most difficult parts of Micro untouched.
Excellent professor, manageable workload and easy exams. I am not sure why rating has been so low.
Worst professor I have had at the University of Michigan
Absolutely awful. I had to take Hogan because the other professors classes were already full. Seriously if you can manage to get ANYBODY else then take that person. His exams are nothing like what he exposes us to in class and he gets through an average of 5 out of 20 ppt slides a lecture. Strongly encourage you to stay away.
Great Professor informative and interesting!
He definitely has his own style of teaching, but if you are a very logical thinker you will follow his reasoning and have success. His lectures are extremely boring, but if you can manage through them he basically reasons through every possible question he could give you, so just pay attention
It is very interesting regarding the feed back that Professor Hogan receives on this site. He is not an awful professor or teacher. Dry, yes, however, he knows his material. Attending class, doing the problem sets, and idk actually trying would probably change a majority of reviews here. If you do work and try, it is not bad. No one ever does tho.
Hogan is a good guy, and you can clearly tell he tries in lecture. He attempts to make the mundane interesting. You might not know your grade until the very end, so that could be a problem if you suck. Just try and do your best, and you will be rewarded for your efforts.
Chad Hogan is a clear example of the weight that the University of Michigan's Economic Department places on teaching: ZERO. Also, Chad Hogan himself has been regularly writing fake reviews here for many years. (Hint: They're the favorable ones.)
Unclear grading criteria
His lectures are terribly dry and boring. I didn't go to lecture once. Just read the slides before the exams, take practice exams, do homework and you will be fine. Do not go to lecture or you will fall asleep. He spends like 30 minutes on one slide where I can knock out a slide at home for like 5 minutes. Class is fair, just bad professor.
Worst thing I have to say about professor hogan are his lectures. While hes easy to understand when I try listening, it does take effort to focus for the entire lecture because he is a bit on the dry side. However, he definitely is an intelligent guy and you can tell he tries to make things as clear as possible
I took Econ 101 with Hogan and my first week of school, a 5th year Econ Major friend told me that he had dropped Hogan after 2 weeks of class and warned me to do the same...I should have listened. The absolute worst lecturer I have ever had. Redundant, slow paced, and focused on simple topics in class, leaving us confused about actual exam content.
Chad is not the most horrible professor ever, but he's not great either. He spends too much time on one subject and explains things strangely. Be sure to read and do the homework for understanding. His class is way harder than the other 101's at UM. However, he really does care and puts so much effort into helping you if you just ask.
Hogan somewhat deservedly gets a bad rep. His lectures are boring and unhelpful and his tests are hard af. Having said that, he's great one-on-one. Go by his office hours at least a couple times, otherwise going you'll be floating by without actually understanding any of the material.P.S. Discussion sections don't matter aside from Part B of exams.
Chad is a nice guy and very willing to help outside of class, however, I found myself before exams using youtube to teach myself all of the content. I enjoy econ and think I'm not bad at it but Chad's tests proved otherwise. There are teachers at Umich that will be significantly better for getting a better grade and increasing your understanding.
The course is 90% exams and 10% homework, so if you think you are good at this topic, take him. The exams are not difficult. Otherwise, no. His lectures were dry and boring. I learned mostly through reading the textbook and going over slides on my own. If you want to do well in his class, go to his office hours and he is willing to help.
For the first two exams, it is fine if you read the textbook and see his slides. But for the final exam, go to his office hour and ask about the questions in sample exam that you don't know how to solve! But beware that his lectures are extremely boring and hard to concentrate. You have to learn by yourself, but he is willing to help in office hour
Econ310 is almost the *exact* same content from Econ102, with maybe 3-4 lectures on new content. Hogan is a good professor but his lecture-style is definitely geared towards "auditory-learners" because he goes through maybe 4 slides per class. Exams are really easy as well.
An easy A would not take you so much time.
Going to lecture and discussion is pretty much useless. His lectures are very boring and he never gets through the whole lecture. But with that said, he's not as bad as everyone makes him out to be, most people hate him because they don't put any effort in. The material is pretty easy so if you actually take the time to learn it, you'll do fine.
He is not as bad as what most students ranked him on rate my prof. In fact, i would argue that he is extremely caring and accessible outside of class. He even gave out his work phone number for students to access him. I believe he is more helpful in office hours than in class. Chad is the man!!!
You can tell that Chad really cares about what he is lecturing on. Attending class in optional, but you definitely need to go to pass. He is very accessible outside of class and even encourages students to text him with any questions. Make sure you go to his office hours!! He'll work with you until you have the right answers on assignments
mad chill, just go to office hours. he really cares about 300 level course and he really wants his students to do well. He is a totally reasonable guy and I would definitely recommend his 300 level class
101 is light work and hogan is better than the other lectures. The curve is huge. If you don't get a B don't continue with Econ its not his fault you suck
Just go to class and you'll be fine. There's no discussion but office hours with Chad are very helpful and he can clear up course content on a more personal level.
Chad Hogan unlike most other professors cares that you understand the material. He does not ask you cram complicated formulas but rather understand and apply them. In exams his questions are similar to that he gives in his assignments so you know whats expected of you. If you want an A go to lecture but more importantly use his office hours.
I honestly hated chad as a lecturer (VERY boring), but loved him as a person. I put in very minimal effort and still did well. The material is simple, just sitting through lectures is the hard part. His tests are very, very straight forward.
I can understand why Professor Hogan gets an unfavorable reputation. However, he really cases about making sure his students understand the content and makes sure that he is available as a resource when needed. He is incredibly accessible. His exams are graded harshly, but that is because they are straightfoward and contain already covered content.
Chad is laid back and clearly goes above and beyond to help students understand the material. He does not make lecture attendance mandatory and posts slides online, but I would still go. There are only 4 problem sets throughout the term and exams are easy to prepare for if you do the homework properly. Overall, a solid 300 level econ elective.
