I liked Prof. Vance! Very funny and class was always pleasant.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you're not going to want to miss a single class. Professor Vance has the best lectures--really makes philosophy interesting and applicable. I thought the philosophy GER would be the worst, but I'd love to take another of Professor Vance's classes. Who else would talk about The Matrix, dead babies, and BDSM in class?
I highly recommend taking Prof. Vance's class because he makes the material interesting and tells hilarious stories from time to time. If you go to class and study the material you will do fine.
I've taken Philosophy 201 and without a doubt, it was one of the most interesting class I've ever taken. There were pop quizzes each weak, but as long as you finish the readings, I can assure you that there is no possible way for you to get below B+. Topic is clearly explained and the lecture is really fun and interesting.
Absolutely brilliant. Loved intro to Philosophy, Prof. Vance is fantastic, hilarious, weird, and great at explaining philosophy. Class discussions are great! Tests are challenging but as long as you study the lecture notes it's fine. TAKE THIS CLASS. Anyone even Not interested in philosophy will enjoy this class. Homework level is very reasonable.
Professor Vance is truly an amazing professor. His dedication made this class an absolute blast. Some of the readings can be tough to get through, but his lectures are so great that you'll walk out of class fully comprehending the material. You'll definitely have to put in the time to get the grade you want, but that goes for any class you take.
Chad is the best professor I've had at my time in the college. His passion for the subject he teaches is infectious and more importantly, he's just an amazing human being. Brilliant man, hilarious, definitely would take (and will!) take more classes with him.
Chad is a cool professor and he is really passionate about his subject. Symbolic Logic is unlike other philosophy classes because it really makes you think in a specific way, but Chad does his best in lectures to make the material relatable and understandable. Despite not being for a GER, this is a class worth taking for both the prof and material.
As someone who had no interest in philosophy, this class was an absolute blast. Chad brings the material to life with funny and applicable lectures. Two essays, two tests, and reading quizzes. Tests are based entirely off the lecture notes. The essays are a little harder, but he will help you if you ask for it. Overall, highly recommend.
Chad is a very cool dude and he definitely makes class interesting. That said, don't go into his class thinking "this is just a basic philosophy class, should be an easy A" because his essays and tests will hurt your GPA if you don't take them seriously. Take his class, but only if you're prepared to show up consistently and put in strong effort.
Cool professor, Amazing class!
Chad is an awesome professor! He's so helpful during office hours and cares for his students. Symbolic Logic is definitely one of the hardest classes I've encountered, but Chad really makes you work for it. He's hilarious during his lectures and I'm glad I took his class. Recommended for anyone who wants to try out a challenging philosophy course!
Chad is so awesome, definitely one of my favorite professors so far. He is not afraid to spit water all over the board in order to make you understand what he's talking about (take his class for context!). Mandatory attendance, but you wouldn't want to miss a class. I thought it was an easy A, but many didn't, so don't go in expecting one.
Funny guy and interesting lectures. Definitely an enjoyable class.
SO FUNNY. You have to go to class but you won't want to miss his class. The readings are really easy and interesting. Not a hard grader but the class isn't an easy A. Readily available during office hours and gives wonderful feedback. I will probably end up taking another class with him.
Prof Vance is fantastic! His classes were a lot of fun. He's really entertaining and has great jokes. You'll definitely laugh every class. Serious material though- do the reading! Great class. I'd take it again.
Two papers (one shorter and one longer), both heavily based on your opinion on whatever contemporary moral issue you're writing about, so as long as you fulfill the basic criteria outlined in the rubric, you'll do fine. A midterm and a final, both not too hard--just study. Reading quizzes, too. Wish I'd taken for credit.
So grateful I was lucky enough to have Chad as a professor for Metaphysics (as well as symbolic logic). Without a doubt one of the best professors at William and Mary, and it saddens me that the department was not willing to give him a permanent residence. Super smart, super engaging, hilarious, and a fair grader! I recommend his class to everyone!
Super funny and engaging! I had a bad experience with the department before and was wary to take another class, but he completely changed my mind. He gives random quizzes on the reading but drops 1, exams are a breeze as long as you review his notes on Blackboard. Take him!
The best philosophy professor I had at wm, and I'm a philosophy major. Great lectures, straight-forward grading, always available to help and never, ever, condescends or lashes out. Will definitely take again before I graduate.
This professor is so awesome. He's very smart, clear, and hilarious! I loved his logic class so much, I'm going to take advanced next spring. 1010 recommend
He was a bit unclear on what sort of essay he wanted us to write. Particularly concerning how to pair down the essay topic into a manageable size for just 1000 words.
Vance is the worst grader I have ever had. Anything semi-intelligent goes right over his head and he takes points off for things he can't comprehend. His expectations for tests and papers are extremely unclear because the requirements are simple and then you get a bad grade back because we wanted way more then what he asked for from the start.
Vance is a fantastic professor. He is knowledgeable, humorous, and engaging. His reading quizzes are simple, his tests are straightforward (though he can be a nitpicky grader at times), and his papers are pretty standard. I would highly recommend taking a class with Vance. As a non-philosophy major, his class is a great introduction to the field.
Great professor. He is animated, engaging, and receptive to your comments and questions. His sense of humor can be pretty outrageous, but he is also respectful and genuine in serious moments. His expectations are fair - just do the reading (which is minimal) and put good faith effort into assignments. Stick to simple language for papers.
I really enjoy Vance's lectures; he does a great job of making the class interesting, especially for people who have never taken a philosophy class before. However, his grading is strange and arbitrary. He will take points off correct answers for unnecessary reasons, leaving the majority of the class with a lower grade than they expected to earn.
A little harsh on grading for an intro level philosophy class, but has interesting lectures that are engaging and insightful- also posts his notes which is helpful
Absolutely phenomenal professor. Engaging, funny, and not difficult at all so long as you do the reading. Or even skim the reading. If you get the chance to take a class with him DO IT.
I came into the class eager to learn how to become a more critical thinker as well as writer. I really believe this class have given me invaluable tools, and I'm very thankful for that. Reading are interesting and not long. 2 papers, 2 exams, a debate, and some quizzes. Vance makes things extremely clear and is hilarious. Highly recommend.
Everyday is a blast listening to this guy talk. I really hope I get to take one of his classes again and I would recommend with a sense of humor and desire to think critically.
Coming from someone who thought I had absolutely no interest in philosophy, this class was amazing. You can tell Vance is a really intelligent person, and really wants us to understand the topics and think about our views about different issues. Fantastic class, highly recommend.
I didnt do that well in this class because I did not show up regularly to class, which is essential. He grades heavily on participation and often gives out easy pop quizzes (but if you aren't there obviously you can't do them). Lectures were great the guy loves the topic and has a mastery of the quintessential awkward/hilarious professor humor.
If you want to take an intro philosophy class, take it with Chad. He's incredibly animated, funny, and if you don't find him funny he will laugh at his own jokes for you. Make sure to do the readings because pop quizzes, but they are incredibly easy if you give them a reasonable look. They're also interesting and relevant which helps too.
One of the best professors I have had at W&M; he really makes you think about the material, but makes it fun and enjoyable. He is also willing to brainstorm with you on paper and assignment topics. Tests are a bit tough because specific wording of answers is crucial, but it's all covered in class. If you can take a course with Chad, do it.
Professor Vance's was engaging and consistently hilarious. He goes out of his way to make the lectures interesting. The papers and two tests were very manageable, especially if you use the lecture notes he posts online. Although his wording was occasionally tricky on tests and the feedback on papers wasn't the clearest, overall a great class!
I took the PHIL 100 Freedom course. Chad Vance is a fantastic professor. I had never taken a philosophy course before; however, I learned A LOT. If you are looking for an entertaining class that still holds value, this is the class. There are few assignments, so he expects you to try your best (obviously). Put in the work and you'll do great.
Chad is without a doubt my favorite professor. I've taken a class with him before, and wish he could teach all my classes. He managed to make Symbolic Logic fun enough that I looked forward to class everyday. While not mandatory, attendance is super important. An awesome guy that made me want to major in philosophy, and a beautiful human being.
Philosophy is not my favorite subject but I would take this class again for Chad Vance because he is one of the best professors/teachers that I have ever had. There is a lot of reading. You have to put in time to get a good grade but to me it was worth it. Take this class, you will learn a lot and will be entertained by his lectures.
I took Professor Vance's class as my freshmen seminar and loved it! I am not a philosophy major, but I would take another class with him just because he is an amazing professor. He doesn't give a ton of readings, makes lectures interesting, and wants his students to discuss the topics. I would highly recommend taking a class with him.
I was atrocious at Symbolic Logic, but professor Vance was patient with me, guiding me through the material really well, and eventually it all clicked for me on the final and I got an A- thanks to his policy of dropping the lowest exam grade. As everyone has mentioned, he is hilarious and his lectures are enough to make coming to class worthwhile.
I wouldn't take him if you want an easy COLL class. He is extremely funny. There is a ton of reading and he gives out pop quizzes every week. Those are very easy. The tests are straightforward, but you'll need to memorize definitions word for word. The essay structures are confusing and something we haven't done in high school.
Best philosophy professor ever.
Vance is an awesome professor. I learned a ton in his class. He is definitely a great professor who really is knowledgeable about philosophy.
Chad was the man. Super funny and easy to reach out to. Reading is the only HW. He gives pop-quizes on readings, but as long as you read them they are easy. Tests are pretty easy if you know the material and two essays that are kind of tough. Overall awesome dude, highly recommend.
Prof. Vance was a really great teacher. Easy to talk to about class, philosophy, or whatever. HW wasn't too hard. Quizzes weren't too bad if you read everything. Tests aren't too hard if you paid attention and read. Gave pretty good feedback with essays. Great prof, would definitely take again and hope to take another one of his classes.
Professor Vance was a good professor but he was very full of himself and could also be unreasonable at times with respect to his grading. He is a fantastic lecturer but is also very harsh and doesn't think anyone could have an opinion better than him.
Such an amazing professor! This is my second class with him and highly suggest anything he teaches. Class consists of a midterm, 2 papers, a debate, 11 reading pop-quizzes, and a final. Tough, but fair grader. Always has engaging lectures that directly relate to reading topics. All readings are online, so no need to buy a textbook.
Such an amazing professor. This is my second class with him and highly suggest anything he teaches. Class consists of a midterm, 2 papers, a debate, 11 reading pop-quizzes, and a final. Though, but fair grader but engaging lectures that relate to reading topics. All readings are online, so no textbook required.
Chad Vance is such an amazing professor. His lecture were so much fun and incredibly thought provoking. Beyond this he was always available to help with more difficult concepts in office hours. He did grade very specifically and was looking for certain key things on tests but he is very up front about this and its not too bad.
Vance is the best professor I have ever had at W&M. Made me change my major; take a class if you can. They really are eye-opening.
Chad Vance is such a wonderful professor. He made me fall in love with Philosophy. I really can't put into words how refreshing and exciting his class is. He is very picky when it comes to wording on tests, but he's pretty upfront with what he's expecting during classes.
I have taken a couple of classes with Chad Vance and I have really enjoyed them. He is straightforward with what he expects and sets up the class in a way where if you have never taken a Philosophy class before, you can still be successful. My biggest piece of advice is to go to every class and make sure you do the readings for pop quizzes.
Random reading quizzes throughout the semester make skipping class unwise, but they are usually pretty straightforward so they aren't too difficult. Then you get to his lectures which are fun and engaging. Vance is overall a great prof.
Professor Vance was a great choice for philosophy! He makes class enjoyable with funny lecutres, and with pop quizzes it's definitely important to attend class. He's a tough grader at times, but the class was very interesting and overall worth taking!
This is his first time teaching Medieval Philosophy and probably will also be the last time as he said in one of his lectures. He is clear and organized. Pop quizzes made me do all the readings that are very intriguing. Fast and fair grader; Noted that he is not a tough grader: He will give you all the points that you deserve in assignments.
Professor Vance's class is such a gem! Very well organized and super interesting. Although there are pop quizzes, they helped me read all the reading with motivation. The reading he assigned is very reasonable; none of them is super long and tedious. I don't think he is a tough grader as long as you know what you are talking about on the test.
This class has been my favorite class at W&M. Professor Vance's lectures were thought-provoking and easily accessible for students who were inexperienced in philosophy. I was never bored in his class as it was like 50 minutes of stand-up comedy. I appreciate his clear organization of lectures and requirements to succeed.
Professor Vance makes philosophy not as hard as it sounds and very interesting. He has very clear expectations for papers.
Vance is really funny and very helpful if you go to his office hours. He has very clear grading criteria but will bump you up at the end. He makes philosophy accessible for non-majors. Just make sure you go to every class and do the readings - which are short and interesting. Make sure to utilize the outlines he puts on his website.
Vance is the funniest guy ever, which makes his lectures easy to listen to. Whether you are a Phil major or have never taken a Phil class, he teaches for all students and makes the topics easy to understand. Readings are short and very interesting. Skepticism is a great class for an ALV, it really makes you think and look at things differently.
Such a tough grader. I honestly didn't think I would survive the class
He's an amazing lecturer who makes philosophy fun and accessible. His tests were really straightforward, and if you pay attention in class you'll be fine.
not funny. grades on a ton of things, you can't just do well on exams. pop quizzes, so go to class. really random class, discusses very out-there, hypothetical material. grades hard on papers, so make sure even your draft is very good
Love Chad Vance! This was my second class with him and Im taking a third because I love his teaching so much. Very clear lecturer, straightforward grading, hilarious anecdotes. Do the reading for the random pop quizzes every week, but as long as you know the gist youll be fine on those. Usually 2 papers, 2 tests, and a final (plus the quizzes)
Professor Vance is hilarious and means well. He grades really rough on the essays so going to office hours to make sure your argument makes sense is definitely a good idea. Pop quizzes aren't that hard if you do the reading and aren't worth much individually. All around best Coll 150 I could have possibly taken.
Chad Vance is the worst professor at The College. I hope I never have to see this man again. Makes downright inappropriate jokes to his students, grades his assignments very hard, and is the only thing I hated about school here. I dreaded having to go to his class. Do yourself a favor and take somebody else.
Fantastic professor. He really loves to be up there, teaching. You can tell he loves what he's talking about because he's not afraid to "embarrass" himself in front of the class. Makes lectures very entertaining and thought provoking, you'll never want to miss his class after the first day.
The Kripke impression alone is worth it.
Dr. Vance is hilarious and super knowledgeable about any philosophy topic. His lectures are super engaging and I left class everyday wanting to know more. Work hard on the papers though, he's a tough grader! Definitely take him as much as you can, he's one of the best in the department.
Chad is one of my favorite professors I've had at W&M. He's hilarious and his lectures are extremely interesting, engaging and clear. I also feel like I learned how to make better, concise arguments. Only negative would be that he is a relatively tough grader for essays and tests (he's looking for specific answers and small differences matter).
very funny guy, his collection of personal anecdotes never ceased to fascinate me
Professor Vance is great professor! He is very passionate about philosophy and makes class interesting/funny. He makes it clear that he is always available to help you. Tests and essays are graded a bit harshly so make sure to go to office hours for clarification and help. There are pop quizzes pretty often but if you do the readings they're easy.
Professor Vance is an enthusiastic and dedicated prof. His lectures are very engaging, part because of the plentiful discussion and part because of his reenactment of various arguments by analogy. I hoped to have received an A in this class but I was not used to writing for philo and did not ask for feedback on my initial paper idea. My fault.
You should make an effort to go to all the classes and not miss more than 1-2. Do all the readings because of the pop quizzes You don't really need to take notes because he posts class notes online and you can study them for the exam. Go to his office hours/email for the papers He's a funny guy and means well. Recommend this class
Tough grader on paper and exam, received lowest paper grade in this course since college. Not very helpful after class, no email feedback. Really cannot appreciate bad jokes he made in class. Pop quizzes are easy if you did the reading, but have to attend class on time, so make sure you have reliable commute way. He is very organized in material
Awful experience. The hardest class I have ever taken in college, this class is literally driving me crazy. Prof. Vance graded papers and exams harshly which makes me can't survive.
Vance has a quirky sense of humor, and is always trying to find a way to make class entertaining. This man literally plaed his ukelele for us on Zoom. He cares a lot about his students, and I'd highly reccomend him. Readings are assigned for every class, but only take about half an hour. Papers have clear guidelines, and office hours were helpful.
Environmental Ethics is one of the best classes I've taken at W&M. As a STEM major taking a philosophy class, I was wary, but Professor Vance is a great lecturer and it's obvious how much he cares about his students. I would 100% take another class with him. The papers could be tricky, but he was always available for help. I learned so much!
Chad is a god. The most iconic, hilarious professor I've met at W&M, highly caring about students, and straightforward with assignments. He tells bizarre stories and pulls weird stunts pretty much every class, and the subject matter is also genuinely thought-provoking, so I actually looked forward to going to class, especially during online classes
Professor Vance is an absolute gem. He made an incredibly difficult class very enjoyable and something I actually looked forward to.
Prof Vance is great. Easily the most engaging professor I've had. His lectures never fail to make me smile, and they help me get excited about what we're learning too. In my experience (I've taken two classes with him so far) his grading is fair too.
Get your Kazoos ready because Vance is as wonderful as he is talented at the Ukulele. Do not let his hilarity fool you though, he is a tough professor. But tough in the way that makes you want to learn and make him proud. a MUST take for philosophy majors or literally anyone
Symbolic Logic is quite the class... The grade is made up of weekly HW (25%) and three exams (25% each, non cumulative). He is a very available and he is a VERY fun lecturer. I took this class partly for fun and partly to prepare for the LSAT (the course does not relate to the LAST past the first exam). Vance is a good guy and his grading is fair.
Chad is my favorite professor I've had so far. He's very tough in his grading, but very fair. Warning- my grade went from a high B to a C- after missing the final, and Chad doesn't offer any form of make-up or extra credit. He's quite strict on his policies, but a VERY nice, funny, and engaging professor, and I hope to take more classes from him!
Philosophy of technology was my favorite class this semester and Chad is hilarious and engaging. He's a super tough grader though so midterm and final can do serious damage to your grade. In my opinion it's worth it for the interesting content and fun discussions though.
I had Professor Vance for PHIL 150 over Zoom (because of Covid). He might have been better in person, but he still managed to make our online discussions thoughtful, funny, and interesting. The homework is pretty light, just a reading and a reading quiz before each class. Definitely recommend if you want a good professor and fun discussions.
This is easily the most difficult philosophy class I have taken at W&M but Vance made it so engaging and interesting. I highly recommend this class for any philosophy major, prepare your kazoo and be ready for a fascinating, difficult, and rewarding class. I can't wait to have more classes with Vance, he is an excellent professor.
Took Philosophy & Tech for my COLL 150, very relevant and thought-provoking. Every class is a discussion which he leads, and you don't have to participate. Quirky guy, graded tough which annoyed me at first but definitely improved my writing by the end. Easy quiz on the reading before every class, 2 papers, midterm, final, 2 group-led discussions
Highly recommend taking at least one class with Chad. He made me a much better writer and thinker. He also threw a trash can across the room, which was pretty cool.
I have no idea why Prof Vance has such a high rating here. He is definitely a nice guy, but he is a tough grader. If you are not a philosophy major and just want to take his class for a C200 req, he will kill you GPA for sure. Don't be fooled by the high rating on this web page! Try another prof if you want to have great philosophy experience.
This class was extremely interesting and you will learn a lot, but BEWARE he is a TOUGH grader. Even if you get a question right, if you use the wrong format he will take heavy points off,. He is interesting, but super hard on his students - if you're looking to fill an ethics requirement and trying for an easy A this is not the class for that.
Professor Chad is an angel! I have learned a lot from this course - from critically thinking about the controversial topics in our contemporary society to learning how to write a philosophical paper. His passion really sparks my interest in this field. Though he is a tough grader, he gives opportunities to elevate our grades. Take this fun course!
Love love LOVE Chad Vance. Took 4 classes with him over my 4 years and loved every second. Hes funny, kind, and super clear in his lectures/notes. Posts readings online so no books necessary usually and has very clear syllabi/rubrics/etc. Take him. Seriously. Hes the reason I added a philosophy major. Best guy ever.
One of the worst professors I have had. This is NOT AN EASY A. He takes points off for the smallest things and is very inconsiderate. So much work and he gives terrible feedback. I swear he deflates your grade esp when it comes to participation. This class brought down not only my GPA but my major GPA as well. I don't recommend this class to ANYONE
Class is entirely discussion-based on readings done the day prior. Grade is mostly determined by two papers (reasonable), and a midterm & final (quite difficult & graded without feedback). Discussion was always lively despite online format, but Vance was more partisan than I would have liked for a philosophy prof. Very inaccessible out of class.
Hilarious professor. He made a 9am class engaging even over zoom. I bet he is even better in person. The class does have a reading every other day but they are short and entertaining. I loved this class! He responds fairly quickly to emails. The group project was fun too! Lecturers are discussion based. Very reasonable. Very fun class and professor
One of the most brilliant lecturers I've ever had! His classes are hilarious but the fundamental content (ie. how to structure a proper argument, how to respond to objections) is incredibly valuable, no matter your major! The workload is average and he's not necessarily a tough grader as long as you're careful about picking your words.
This has got to be the worst class I have ever taken. Professor does not care to give justification as to why points are taken off. If it is not worded the way he likes then major points will be deducted. I asked if I could possibly get half a point back on an exam and he responded saying he was too lenient and took off another half a point.
Professor Vance may seem crazy at first, but he is very knowledgeable in his field. He has a strict grading criteria, and he does not offer extensions on exams or papers. Philosophy papers require a different approach from other papers you may have written, so BEWARE! Do not expect an easy A in this class; he will make you work for it. Good luck!
Professor Vance is definitely a tough grader, however, with the weekly quizzes and discussion boards, its very easy to maintain a good grade. He's very quirky which can either make lectures interesting or very annoying (depending on what you like) - but does spend a LOT of time to explain concepts; and uploads notes he took based off his lectures.
I'm not in philosophy but Chad made this class highly accessible. He is so so clear and organized its a beauty. He grades a little hard but quickly and there's plenty of tools/resources available to improve. He gives 11 pop quizzes, so you do have to do the readings - but they're never long and always accessible. 10/10 a beautiful man & great class
I have never taken a philosophy class and this was my favorite class all semester. The topics really made you think about new ideas in technology I had never known. There are two papers which are graded pretty tough but then two projects which boost your grade. Overall amazing class and would take more with Prof Vance if given the choice.
Prof. Vance is what you would expect of a passionate environmentalist-philosopher. He has a unique style, is very expressive, and presents concepts in easy-to-remember ways. He has funny stories, and tests aren't too hard. Participate in class and do ALL the readings to be ready for his pop quizzes! Tests aren't too hard, overall a good class.
I love Chad! I went to every class (not normal for me) because our discussions were just that fun. I was definitely humbled by his grading, especially on papers, but he gives great feedback, and quickly. You definitely have to work hard in this class but it's not impossible to do well. All in all, my favorite class and professor so far.
This professor is fantastic and I recommend him to anyone somewhat interested in Philosophy. He was a great introduction to the field. He explains topics and concepts in the field in a very understandable manner. He is always energetic and his lectures were so entertaining. The content was fascinating so I was always excited for the next class.
This class was really interesting, and Chad Vance kept it engaging but didn't prepare students for his grading style. Philosophy is a different type of writing style that you will never encounter again and we were never taught how to write for the class. I recommend this class who is more confident in writing because it does not build you up.
Professor Vance's PHIL150 class is a super fun introduction to philosophy. It is a little reading-heavy, usually having three readings required per week. Vance makes every class period very engaging and hilarious. Would recommend.
Chad is hilarious. Makes the learning interesting. Favorite teacher so far and will definitely take another class with him.
Chad was absolutely amazing, I would take another philosophy class just so I could have him as a prof again. Our discussions were super engaging and hilarious; you never know quite what he is going to say. His grading on papers was tough but in class quizzes and exams weren't bad at all.
The lectures were engaging, but that was the only good part about the class. He does not prepare you to write philosophy papers (yes, I used the supplementary materials). The quizzes test you on obscure details from the readings, which are assigned nearly every class. The exams are almost entirely short answer and he grades pretty harshly.
Took this class because it was the only one that worked out with my schedule. I've never taken a philosophy class in my life, so it was pretty hard to adjust to the writing and thinking style. However, Prof. Vance is super caring and gives good feedback if you ask. A TON of work imo, but I'm glad I took it because I learned a lot from him!
He has a harsh "no late work" policy, which sucks because he will not give you an extension even if you're not mentally doing well.
Vance is an interesting guy with an interesting personality. I often enjoyed our class discussions. Just make sure you do the readings because you have to write weekly responses and he gives pop quizzes. He is a tough grader when it comes to essays but he often gives you lots of feedback.
Definitely attend every lecture, they're all quite funny and interesting, and attendance greatly helps on the midterm and final exams. While Vance's essay grading can be harsh, he gives extensive feedback, and editing your papers based on that feedback will help you greatly improve.
This class made me believe that I am living in a simulation, and you should take it for that reason alone. Professor Vance's lectures are so thought-provoking, and he has an amazing, ironic sense of humor. I questioned so much after every single class, which was great. The essays and midterm were challenging (but fair). The final boosted my grade.
Professor Vance is awesome. He is a great lecturer, very funny and engaging, and clear when it comes to presenting material. His homework is very manageable. While he is surely not an easy grader, he is by no means unfair. If you do everything you're supposed to do, his class will be manageable and enjoyable, and you will get a good grade.
This was the best class I have taken in college thus far. Vance is organized/intentional in every respect & his course material is thought provoking and relevant. I would exclusively take classes with him if I could. He does give pop quizzes on readings but they are so easy (if you read you will be totally fine). He roots for his students success.
Dr. Vance is one of the best teachers I've ever had - college or otherwise. Not only is he genuinely funny, but his ability to clearly explain difficult and complicated topics is astonishing. He gives great feedback and grades quickly. That said, his class is not an easy A, but in the context of philosophy I'd almost consider that a plus.
Prof Vance has taught all my favorite classes. Environmental Ethics changed my life (literally changed the choices I make every day). He makes philosophy accessible, both through his lectures (which are extremely clear and engaging) and readings (which are easily digestible and fairly short). His hilariously dark humor is just the cherry on top.
I could not be more glad I took Philosophy and Technology with Professor Vance this semester. If you want to learn from an engaging, truly hilarious, knowledgeable, accessible, and kind-hearted professor, Professor Vance is an excellent choice. You will learn fro
I'm 100% sure he only read half of my final paper, and his essay feedback is harsh and snarky. The content is interesting, but I don't think he teaches it well. He's not receptive to differing views, and he struggled to convey the importance of metaphysics to us, opting to just ram it down our throats and wonder why we weren't engaged.
He will push you to be a better writer which I loved. Stellar feedback on papers. He is a little bit nuts which takes some getting used to, but overall a very funny character. Start his papers well in advance and make sure to be in class with the readings done. Only take him for non-100-level classes if you're serious about philosophy.
Great lectures and really tries to promote discussion. Makes a very comfortable and engaging class experience. He can be tough at grading (although there are other assignments to help cushion grades) and strict with rules. If you can come to class mostly on time and consistently you'll be okay.
Nice guy, but not an easy A at all. Take if you have no life outside of school.
Very funny and nice professor. I took Philosophy of Technology and the readings are required because there are pop quizzes which also makes attendance kind of mandatory. He grades pretty harshly on papers so the class is definitely challenging overall but the group projects is a nice grade boost.
Very rude and does not seem to care about students. Writes notes on a chalkboard and doesn't post them.
The lectures were the only decent part of this class. Gave pop quizzes at random so you have to do the readings. The feedback he gave on papers and exams was not constructive at all and is a very harsh grader. Also, in the syllabus he had a very long and vague section with an extensive formula for rounding grades. Do not take this professor
Chad is such a nice and really fun person! However, I would not recommend him as a professor. He is such a harsh grader, especially for a coll 100. Lots of readings and pop quizzes, which often left you feeling slightly unprepared for tests. He tries to be likable but will backstab you when it comes to grades.
Is very rude and snarky when attempting to talk to 1 on 1. He also grades draft papers and applies the grade for the draft to your final grade for some reason, and much of "feedback" are small unhelpful comments such as "???" or "Unintelligible." Although he makes lectures semi-interesting, he and the class are not worth dealing with.
Extremely rude both in person as well as on feedback for papers. Seems like a nice guy in class however only for the 50 minutes that class lasts, afterwards he becomes very condescending and disrespectful. Attempting to seek him out after class (Should you even want to) is difficult as he does not let anyone know about changes in office hours.
He always had engaging lectures and was had very clear expectations for assignments. If your class is talkative, it's a fun time and the topics are super interesting. I saw my writing improve greatly and he gives clear and concise feedback. Not sure why there are so many low scores, ignore them and take a course with this prof.
I don't want to take this course any more.
Dr. Chad Vance was one of my favorite professors at William and Mary. I can genuinely say the class has taught me a lot and has changed the way I think on a daily basis. My suggestion is to do the readings and ask for help with essays early. I thought the midterm was tough, having never taken a philosophy exam before, but did well on the final.
He is a great teacher and the lectures he gives are engaging. However, he is a tough grader and sometimes especially earlier in the semester it's hard to see what his criteria is. Also in the group project, a person outside our group would not stop talking in our discussion and it impacted our grade which was annoying but those are my 2 complaints.
Decent amount of work. I enjoyed most of the material covered, but that was not to Vance's credit. He is a good lecturer, but clearly a narcissist and incredibly rude 1 on 1. His feedback is overall unhelpful unless you have practice in writing philosophy, and it seems as if he enjoys tearing his students down. Grades very subjectively.
Prof. Vance is an extremely principled philosopher, but philosophy is a distancing subject. He practices what he preaches, resulting in harsh grading and a difficult interpersonal relationship. Personally, I poured in 10+ hrs of work per week and was met with uncomprising though highly valid, feedback. Take this professor only if you are prepared.
Vance is who you might think of when picturing a philosophy professor. He can be a bit kooky, but the class discussions he leads are always interesting. I found his grading specific but not harsh. Do the readings (most are pretty short), read the lecture notes he puts out, and participate in class, and you will do fine.
This is the best class I've taken at W&M. Professor Vance is wonderful, and though he is known as a harsh grader, he makes his expectations clear from the start. He is very accessible in office hours, so getting an A isn't too hard (even for non-philosophy majors) if you show up to class and seek help when needed. Would take again if I could.
Professor Vance clearly knows what he's talking about and is highly engaging. My only sticking point is he sometimes is dismissive of ideas the student may just be considering, yet he has thought about at length. I understand it is for the sake of time (being a 50 minute discussion class and all), but it's still off-putting. Otherwise, great class!
He is the embodiment of a philosophy professor and clearly knows/cares a lot about what he is teaching. He makes lectures funny and thought-provoking. That said, he can come off as dismissive because he is so familiar with the subjects. He gives LOTS of feedback which can be intimidating, but he grades fairly. You will need to memorize.
Chad is an amazing professor and I loved taking environmental ethics. The papers definitely required a lot of work but he gives incredible feedback and isn't as difficult of a grader as his syllabus makes him out to be. Pop quizzes come up every week or so on average; just do the reading and they're pretty easy. Take this professor if you can!!
Chad Vance is the worst professors that I have had at William & Mary. He was rude and spoke to many students in a very demeaning way. He is very self-important (ironic for an ethics professor) and I did not enjoy his class in the slightest.
Professor Vance is engaging and passionate about philosophy, and he excels at present ideas clearly. However, a lot of the weight of your grade is based on only two papers and two exams. He cares a lot about clarity and good, concise writing structure. His feedback is blunt and to the point. Make sure to go to office hours about your papers.
He is the funniest most random professor ever. He is the fastest grader ever I received feedback hours after my work was submitted. The homework and pop quizzes are easy 100 and the exams and papers are exactly what he says they are.
Awesome guy but harsh grader
Chad is honestly great. Yes he is a hard grader, this is definitely not an easy A. But he is very fun and engaging and if you pay the slightest attention you will easily learn all the material. He is a great teacher. Could be a little more lenient with grades though.
He would give pop quizzes on the readings throughout the semester, so you had to read everything. The papers and exams are heavy on your grade, so do your best to get a good grade at the beginning of the semester. His grading is tough, and the comments on papers are unclear for your objective. He will stab you in the back for grades.
He isn't reliable outside of the classroom, the office hours are strange, to say the least. A funny teacher who makes the subjects enjoyable but can get sidetracked by student comments. Beware of exams and papers they will tank your grade if done wrong. Comments on papers are a little unclear considering he wants a "Crystal Clear" paper.
Save yourself the trouble and take a different COLL 150.
I truly believe that Vance is the best professor/lecturer I have ever had. His classes were incredibly interactive, engaging, and funny. The work was not that hard, the readings are interesting, reading responses are easy, and with honest effort you can do well on the papers. I studied his provided lecture notes alone and got an A on the midterm.
Truly an amazing professor, this was easily my favorite course this semester. Hilarious while still provoking me to think deeply about each topic covered. He gives amazing feedback on writing, as I went from one of the lowest rough draft grades in the class to one of the highest final copy grades on the first paper by following what he said.
Vance is a one-of-a-kind professor. He truly cares about the subject and the ideas and contributions the students bring to every class. IF you put in the effort, you can get an A/A- no problem. Professor Vance single-handedly made me think about minoring in philosophy, so take whatever you want from that statement.
Don't be put off by the negative reviews; Vance was one of the best professors I've had. Classes are fun and extremely engaging, anything not understood in the reading is explained thoroughly in lecture. Tests and papers are on the harder side, but office hours or just attentive discussion can clear up any questions on the material.
Vance is enthusiastic, dedicated, hilarious, and engaging! His expectations, while high, are designed to support students' learning. He also returns the effort he expects: he grades quickly, gives detailed feedback, and is very accessible outside of class. He applies concepts to current events, which I appreciate. Take a class with him if you can!
Interesting professor. I took this in my freshmen year and unfortunately have avoided any other of is courses. He did not appreciate that I had to miss class due to being an in season athlete. He also did not appreciate that I had accommodations. My non athletic classmates and those without accommodations didn't have these issues.
SPit water on students, and licked a table, WEIRD GUY!!!
Disregard bad reviews by non majors wanting a free A. Tough BUT FAIR grader, pop quizzes and reading responses mean you must do the readings. You will get what you put in, and he doesn't require insane amount of dedication - just skimming the readings and having decent writing skills will get you far. If you try to excel he will make sure you do.
Prof Vance inspired me to major in Philosophy in freshman year. His feedback improved my writing not just for philosophy classes, but for life. A bit eccentric, but gives incredibly clear, engaging lectures. Well-curated, reasonable (even light?) readings for a 400. NOT an easy A, but you will learn how to think, talk, and write like a philosopher.
Prof Vance is hilarious & thought provoking! He is totally meant for his job, he encourages class camaraderie, & after class there's always a new moral dilemma to think on. Yes, his grading is hard, which is annoying but it's not the end of the world. (I'm taking a class with him next spring, which speaks for itself.) Take his classes if you can!
Prof. Vance is wonderful. He clearly cares about the topic matter and students, and wants everyone to succeed. That being said, not an easy A by any means. Do the work, and he is exceptionally fair.
Professor Vance is an amazing professor and I recommend everyone take him. Make sure to do the readings and go to his office hours when working on your essays. He's a pretty harsh grader and gives somewhat ambiguous feedback with the essays specifically. If you talk with him beforehand and come up with an outline early, I find he'll grade easier.
