He just started out, so he didn't get a chance to prepare his own powerpoint slides. But I am sure that he will be a much better teacher next semester. He is always willing to help his students.

Zhu is really good. He definitely knows his stuff. If you show up to class every time and pay attention, the homework is really easy. His tests are straight forward and just like the quiz. He encourages class participation which is really nice. I really enjoyed the class.
He's still new to teaching the course, so he's trying to find his groove. He's a nice guy, but goes extremely slow in class. Sometimes, he spends too much time concentrating on the stuff that's easy to grasp and not enough time on the more difficult stuff. He also takes a long time to get stuff graded, but he may just be a busy person.
He is not very good teacher and not very bad, in between. sometimes confusing and sometimes clear??
worst teacher ever
He tries really hard. I find him a little hard to understand. He is kinda boring. Just bla.
This is a tough subject, and he could be a little bit more clear on things. He's nice, and willing to help but he needs to "dumb things down" a bit more, most of my class is barely hanging on by a thread. It's easy for him b/c he has a PHD. We don't so we need things to be presented slower, he could be more clear!!
He tends to spend too much time on easy concepts and not enough on the harder ones. His tests are sort of hard, but he gives partial credit. Don't even bother buying the textbook!
Zhu was awesome. whenever I needed help he told me to come in and broke it down for me where I was able to understand. Make sure that your are in class. He does the examples and reviews for the test. Zhu is very funny, "you'll see" I would recommand taking this professor. Great instructor!

worst professor i have had
He is boring as hell and makes very lil sense in whatever he says. doesn't even make his own powerpoint you might as well just take dr. dodd, she makes the scantrons and the tests. Get out of his class.
Nice man, but hard to understand. Would not recommend taking his class if your an older student that hasn't had a chem class in awhile.
He gives very little extra credit. He's hard to understand. The only way I came out with an A is because I was tutored by a different chem teacher. He lectured from a different teacher's power point! Chem 2 is hard so don't take him but do take from Bailey or Dodd!
Zhu is always welling to help. Always there. A little difficult to understand but a great Prof.
He's a nice prof. of course, he has accent but it will be problem if you read the materials. His test is okay, not further than lectures. He's willing to help, speed grading. It will be challenge if you don't go to class and expect A.
zhu is in a world of his own when it comes to chem... only plus is he is easy to work with... his catch phrase is "mmmmk" drives half of the class banannas and if you are a chem 2 student you should not forget anything from chem 1 because you are expected to know it... the book is worthless i would recommend a zumdahl book over prentice hall anyday
He's extreamly intelligent and knows his stuff but hard to understand b/c of his thick accent. I pretty much taught myself the material - spent a lot of time reading notes from Shores class and using the book. I would recommend S.Shore or K.Bailey.
I had him his 1st semester teaching at OCCC and so it was a little rough. I spent most of the class trying to figure out what he was saying his accent was very thick. So, I pretty much just had to teach myself everything. It took forever to get tests back. His slides and tests were from another teacher so that helped but I would not recommend him.
He is really hard to comprehend and did not do a very good job of answering questions
Professor Zhu is NOT as bad as people are describing him to be. This class takes a lot of independent studying time and if you can't do it, don't take it! He has a thick accent but it didn't affect my ability to understand the material. He is very willing to help and also very fair in grading and gives partial credit. I would recommend taking him.
if you have already had chemistry take his class and bring your laptop. just play games on your laptop or go to yahoo answers or craigslist or even write a review on him like im doing right now. you have to go home and teach yourself though because you dont learn anything even if you pay attention
He 's flexible. Just look through his lecture, do practice problems and you will be fine. He gives extra credits a lot in tests and also partial credits.
Studied excessively reading every ch. & did all hw and listened in class when I was there. I stopped coming to class becuz it was useless. His teaching is mainly on concepts and not examples helpful for the tests. He doesnt help at all when you ask him to fix or show something. Even if you took AP CHEM you better be prepared! Got a 79% before final
Because I took this class in high school, I felt like I didn't have to go to class at all. And plus, his lectures are mainly off of the powerpoints. But he does go through each example and work it out from beginning to end, so that's a plus. Even though I didn't learn much from him, I must say he was a nice professor; he's always smiling! :)
If you have a lot of experience in Chemistry, this class is extremely easy. But if you have never had Chemistry before DO NOT take Zhu. You cannot understand half of the stuff he says. And he tries to use analogies that just confuse people and don't make sense.
If you've taken AP Chem before this class is REALLY EASY. I usually take my own notes from his power point slides because he does additional example problems on the board. My notes are all I need to study for the tests, it only takes about 25 to 30 min to study for me. I make an A on every test. Online quizzes can be tricky though.
I couldn't really understand what he was saying with his accent which made it ALOT harder for me to understand. I struggled the whole time before i dropped his class. I studied for 2 hours for a test and made a 65 on it thats when i decided its not worth it.
Difficult to understand at times due to his accent, but fairly easy overall. He tries to make the subject understandable by giving examples in detail which really helps. Just like any other class you have to study hard to make good grades.
Recommend. He is a good professor.
Took for Chem 1. He is difficult to understand most of the time. For lecturer he would not be my first choice (especially if you go beyond Chem 1). However, if you have him as just a lab instructor you should do fine.
I would say zhu is a very good professor because he actually worries if you understand the materials. He can be very nice because he wants you to make high grades, he gives partial credit to whatever he can, sometimes it is not what the problem asks for, but if it makes sense he will understand that you tried. He also points out mistakes on labs
Don't let these reviews scare you away. He is hilarious, and his accent isnt difficult to understand. Chemistry is a difficult subject for some, but Dr. Zhu gives partial credit on exams. He is just as good as any other Chem professor. I don't regret choosing him as my professor. Funny asian who knows his stuff. No regrets.
I took him for CHEM I. In my experience I had to really learn everything on my own. I got very little out of lectures, and half the time i would just watch netflix during lectures. I got A's on all my tests due to studying outside of class and basically teaching myself the concepts. Chem quizzes online are hard and they took me 2-4hrs to complete.
Love this professor. Had him for 3 classes. He has passion for Chem & he really cares about his you and will call you out if you miss his class. Invites the class to joke around with him. He is very positive. He only had difficulty with two words, delta & unknown. He worked very hard to correct this & progressed. Among the top 1% of my 55 profs.

Professor usually goes out of his way to make sure the students receive a good grade. He will make sure he can answer any questions you might have about anything. Good sense of humor. Tells what will be on tests. Doesn't ALWAYS get back to e-mails, but usually does, and it's usually in a timely manner. Accent not too hard to understand.
Dr. Zhu requires some getting used to. He sends out his .ppts before class, and test reviews but sometimes not until the same day as lecture. I didn't do the HW, but read every chapter and did his review tests. Be adv he uses online quizzes that take on abt 4hrs to complete. He won't tell you the last few grades, so it's hard to est needed grades.
do not take his class if you want to have a strong base of chemistry ok!
I took his class for summer 2011. will be helpful to help you when you go to his office but in class if you ask something he will ask you to hold it we have to keep going very less time! if I do not get it the main concept how will i understand your rest of the lecture.we liked him thought he was funny ended by hating him.Do not take his class!
HORRIBLE. very hard tests. gives review but test are different than review. sometimes in test he asks stuff which he has not been through in class.hard even to pass you think you know evrything well and u feel terrible whn the grades come back. he grades the tests hard.make sure you check paper good standing right infront of him.
If class is hard, it's only because of the nature of the class; don't blame a professor for it. He is as good as a professor as any other good chemistry professors, if not better. If you have difficulty with his class, I'm sure you will with anyone else that you might switch to. He really cares about his students' success.
Okay...the main issue here is his very thick accent is almost impossible to understand, and for some reason people are too shy to ask him to repeat himself. It causes the entire class to become confused. I completely understand that chemistry is difficult to learn BUT nothing should be this confusing...this class will give you anxiety.
Do not take the Organic Chem Lab class at OCCC (This is for students aiming at A grades) b/c: 1> You?re required to write lengthy detailed conclusions for every single lab experiment (of the 23 total), besides lengthy lab experiments in class (normal) & spectra analysis homeworks (normal; but...) 2> IR analysis homeworks take up ...
Zhu is a very nice teacher. He may have an accent, but it's understandable. It does not take much effort to actually listen to him. He WANTS you to know what is going on. He WANTS you to do well in his class. I made an A in this course. Tests are easy if you study. I only had to study about an hour for each exam. The quizes are online.
Dr. Zhu is a horrible teacher. His teaching style is just like h.s. coaches (book/slide to board). He tells you not to ask questions to save time and when you do he always replies "you should know this...". He changes the value of test questions AFTER the test has been given. Avoid this professor at ALL costs!!!!
i loved chem 1, i usually make above average grades but i really think zhu gets a kick out of making the course as difficult as possible. do not take him if it's one of your core classes. besides the 1st unit, there wasn't one that i didn't have to do tons of research on my own. He's not a TEACHer.
Zhu is a great teacher for CHEM 1115. He really wants his students to understand the material and does his best at not allowing his accent to interfere. Before I had him, many friends said that his accent was incomprehensible, but I and my peers can understand him clearly. The key to succeed in his class is to pay attention and take notes!!
Not very helpful outside of class. Very enthusiastic but incomprehensible. Watch out on the final as it may determine your entire grade. Too much homework for not enough credit. Don't bother if you can avoid for lab or class.
He is very hard to understand and not very helpful outside of class.
Extremely hard all the way around. Major language barrier. Goes too fast. When class says they're lost, he keeps on going. If you see him during office hours or go to extra labs or classroom teachings, it's just a waste of your time. Such a hard class. Barely through the first half, and majorly struggling in his Chemistry.
Extreme difficulty in this class. Can't understand him. Goes wwaayy too fast. When class tells him to slow down, he ignores. Test are extremely hard. No knowledge about online computer homework either. Just an overall extremely hard class to take/understand if Dr. Zhu is your professor.
RED FLAG! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! You will need to learn alot from the book because he's horrible at lecture. Conversions are a foundation in chemistry and he does NOT explain this well. He teaches too fast and he use useless metaphors to describe stuff. Take Steven Shore for Chem, he prints out his powerpoints for you and is easy to understand
Accent was difficult to understand and his way of teaching was confusing. He gives you 10 points bonus if you attend every class, normally 10 points bonus on tests, and his homework isn't mandatory (except online quizzes). His tests aren't that hard. If you have a background in chem then you should have no problem if you remember it.
best professor at occc. hes friendly and willing you work with you, if you miss a class you can attend another section to catch up with lecture. tests are cake, but attending class is a must. hardest thing in the class is the masteringchemistry.
Professor Zhu is a great teacher, he is funny and helpful. His exams can be difficult depending on the unit, but he gives a lot of bonus points, and is fairly easy on grading. I enjoyed his class very much! Would take another class with him if I had the chance!
Loved his class. Was a breeze. The accent took some getting used to but it is sooo adorable and keeps the class entertaining!
Great teacher overall! He is dedicated to making sure you learn the subject! Great teacher overall! If you're majoring in math or science then take him, if not, then he is not the teacher for you.
Professor Zhu is an awesome professor. He does have an accent, but he teaches his lectures well. He offers extra credit in the course and even on the test. He makes review for the tests, and it is really helpful on the test! Also easy to talk to if there are any questions. Great professor!
My first semester in college and this has to be my easiest class. It could be because I took high school chemistry, but I think it was because he was a good teacher. He does have an accent to him, so be prepared to learn some new ways of saying words. He shows us how to do it and then looks at our faces and he can tell when we're confused or not.
Zhu was a great teacher! His accent is easy to understand, but he's constantly asking for clarification on whether we can understand him - we can. He always has tons of review material available and he gives plenty of time to take tests, occasionally making them easier. Do the homework and you'll be prepared for the tests.
I love his way of lecturing and caring
His class requires more attention than you would imagine. Study extremely hard and use the chem lab for help. You really have to try hard in this class.
He is the best chemistry professor ever. he understands you and does not mind taking his time to explain to you. he extends his test dates for people who missed it or couldn't make it. i love his class and would take him for any other chemistry class i would ever take at occc.
Zhu is prob the easiest professor. Very easy on grading, and he curves every test. Offers 20 points of super easy extra credit! He has a very thick accent but you can get used to it. He is pretty funny!! There are 6 unit tests, 8 online quizzes, and a comprehensive final, but this is the minimum for all chem 2 prof. If you get chemistry take him.
his lectures are boring and long. but he is very helpful during his office hours and he has a lot of office hours. His tests are not too hard. take him if you do not want to struggle a lot with chemistry and if you just have to take chemistry but you won't use it ever...
His accent can sometimes be a little bit of a problem for some. I personally didn't have that hard of a time understanding him but others did. He gives partial credit for problems on tests that you get mostly right. Like, if you made a calculator error he will give you some points. I don't think he takes attendance. only hw are the online quizzes
He is from China therefore has a strong accent. He is complicated when lecturing and requires you to memorize things that are not in the syllabus. Also, he testes you on those things that are not in the syllabus. He doesn't' bring tests back to class. You have to go look at them in his office. He penalizes you in test in every way he can.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS OR LAB!!!!! think that it is a pretty bad sign when you start with 40 something students and no whenever you walk into class you only see about 20! He wasn't fair on grading. The test were not multiple choice so that made them harder. I didn't. He needs to change his teaching techniques because they are not working.
Best chemistry teacher I have ever had so I took his gen chem 2 class also.
He is a great professor, and he's very funny. He uses analogies to explain the harder to understand topics. I would definitely take his class again.
Has a strong accent but nothing you can't handle. Super easy class but you have to attend every lecture and dedicate a lot of time.
Even if he is the only professor still available, wait until next semester to take the class with a different professor. None of his power points make since, I had to go to a previous professor for theirs. It is easy to pass the class because he can be lenient, but if you are going on to higher level Chem classes he will not prepare you for them.
Great professor, he makes sure you are ready for his test if you take the time to print off and study the practice questions and attend all his lectures. You will have a good idea of what will be on the test. test account for almost 80% of your grade in Chem I.
HANDS DOWN BEST PROFESSOR. I LEARN SO MUCH. SEMESTER JUST STARTED AND I KNOW I AM GETTING AN A IN THIS CLASS.
Took Dr Zhu for chem II lab and he was great! Pre lab was very informative and we knew exactly what we had to do when we went over to the laboratory. My only complaint is he took off points for having percent error which is understandable but I felt he took off too much for small errors. If you ever need help go to his office hours!
I don't understand how he has a overall quality of 2.9! He should have a 5.0 instead! BEST TEACH EVER. HE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING THROUGHLY AND VERY INFORMATIVE. VERY EASY IF YOU TAKE ZHU. But chemistry isn't a blow off class, you must put it time and effort into studying. When test time came, I only had to study for like 2-3 hours because he is good!!
I don't understand why he is having 2.9 rate. He deserves more than that. Try him and trust me. All you need to do is coming to class, paying attention to his lectures, doing your homework and you sure will pass. He also gives a good amount of extra credit in tests. If you can't pass, blame your laziness.
I struggled in chemistry. I did not understand him that well which probably did not help me. You can pass his class but i would make sure you understand it before taking his tests because they are hard. I would recommend you take another professor.
professor Zhou is an awesome instructor, really knows what she's doing. She put you with a partner in the lap to work with. He's always there to help all students, all the time, even when class time is over, she would stay with U to make U understand and assist you to finish the assignments. Flexible with grading!!. I highly recommend her class.
Chem 1 was hard . I got a C+ with this prof .I take Chem 2 and hopefully i get A
Dr. Zhu is awesome! Took him for Chem II and Chem II Lab. He does have a bit of an accent but it not bad, people just use that as an excuse for not doing well in class. The fact is, chemistry is a very hard subject so be prepared to work! He is the only chemistry professor that grades on a slight curve and he will bend over backwards to help you!
I took him for Chem I lab and Chem II lecture. He is a very good prof and helps you out a lot if you show him that you really care. I went to his office hours a lot and I feel like he graded my exams easier. He is the only Chem prof at OCCC that gives free bonus points on most or all of his exams. Not an easy A though , def lots of studying.
Dr Zhu is a sweetheart and he really cares about his students. He wants everyone to do well. He will help outside of class, even if it's not his regular office hours. He's hilarious. He gives a lot of bonus points on exams if he thinks people need it. His lectures are good, but sometimes hard to follow. I loved his class! His accent isn't a problem
Took this class in the summer, you have an exam each week. He makes sure you understand the material, gives extra credit. Has an accent but it helped me by paying more attention. His jokes made lecture more enjoyable, he really likes students who go to his office and ask questions. Study, do test reviews and your sure to pass.
Dr. Zhu is awesome! His review notes were super helpful, I definitely learned a lot from his clear writings; I even kept them in my lock for future references. His tests were similar to the online quiz with just a few extra thibs from his notes, nothing too crazy or out of the blue like others. Took both chem 1 and 2 with easy A.
He's a good professor. You must take him for your classes. He is a good professor.
I struggled a lot in chemistry and it didn't help that his way of teaching is not for me. Basically just tells you to copy what he writes on the board, no hand outs. If you took AP Chem in high school, you'll be fine. Otherwise, you should definitely study. I have to retake this class...
Zhu was very good at teaching chemistry. He's straight forward and gets the job done. However, he expects a lot from his students. His tests are not the easiest, but if you do the homework and study maybe a day or two before the tests, you'll do fine. A lot of people struggle in his class because of his accent, but it is not too terrible.
I took this course in the summer and professor Zhu is super sweet and funny during his lectures. He explains things well but has an accent that might be hard for some to understand clearly. This class goes at a fast pace since it is compressed. There are tests every week and two in the last week. If you are not a hard worker DO NOT take this class.
I really liked Dr. Zhu! He is so funny and made lectures very enjoyable. He drops verbal hints for what's going to be on the exam. You must do independent learning and study his lecture slides if you want to get an A. He's the most personable chemistry professor at OCCC, I think. You can't go wrong with Dr. Zhu. Don't listen to the hate. He's good!
I have taken Dr. Zhu for both Chem 1 and Chem 2. In both cases, I should have received a C, but Zhu was generous with his points and bumped me to a B. I highly suggest taking Zhu. He tells you what to study for exams. As long as you show up and do practice problems, you will pass.
He is so sweet and cares about his students passing. I took him for chem 2 my second time and his tests seemed much easier than who I had taken before. Definitely attend class. If you have a hard time in Chemistry maybe try another professor because you might find it hard to understand him based on his accent.
I love Zhu. He is very funny and makes sure to explain everything really well. He will not help explain it more if you don't ask so don't feel shy. His review materials are super helpful for the test and he goes over everything you need to remember as you go in class. 100% reccomend him.
never again, I dropped instead of getting an F. he jumps around subjects so you never know where you are. he sucks at replying to emails, he's pretty sweet and pops a joke or 2 but its hard to understand his teaching method. the only grade you get in his class is a test+ quiz grade. nothing else. its like an online class you teach yourself
Zhu is a genuine person who wants everyone to pass but the class was one of the hardest classes Ive taken. Zhu will make sure we all understand the concept but the PPs by themselves during lecture dont feel like much help although he bases his exams from the PPs mostly. I think hes really nice & generous If you need help but his exams are HARD
Took him for lab, his accent is very thick but after awhile you will get use to it. If you need clarification on what he said you can ask him or other people around him. He is very clear and helpful for lab. And if you need help on lab he is happy to help. Just pay attention to prelab/briefing.
His grading criteria are clear. Make sure to do the homework quizzes because they can help boost your grade up. Although his lecture videos can be hard to understand, you can have zoom meetings with him for help. He answers your questions straight to the point. Just expect a lot of studying. Also, rounded my 89.5% to an A
I would strongly advise against taking Gen Chem II online. This course is significantly harder than Chem I, and online lectures are not thorough enough. Prof. Zhu is helpful over email, responds in a timely manner, and gives detailed explanations to questions. However, it was a massive struggle to pull an A in this course due to the online format.
Horrible teaching style, if the subject doesn't click instantly then he will belittle you in front of the class, "YOU KNOW WHAT IM SAYING?" It personally seems like he doesn't care whether you pass or fail. I had to watch videos to truly learn because his shaming approach was not working for me. I don't recommend taking this Professor.
Prof. Zhu is not for everyone, he is very short and tries to speed you along to get through the course without making sure the concept is being grasped then he will make you feel stupid by saying it in front of the whole class. I do not know that this was intentional but he doesn't care about his students well being.
Hard to understand and not a good teacher in my opinion, he would assume I got the answer off of one of my peers rather than them getting it from me, it was very hard for me to attend this course, I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!
He's VERY condescending!!! "YOU'RE GOING TOO SLOW" or "You're not going to pass this course if you keep it up like this" were actual phrases used & its important for him to know that that is NOT inspirational. Since it was a requirement for lecture, I followed the guidelines and went to 10 labs and got the required amount of points to pass the lab.
The absolute worst professor I have ever had. If you can take ANYONE else.
I took Zhu this Spring and ended with a D. I took him again this Summer since I thought I would learn better after just hearing the material and ended with a C. He cares about his students but not enough to put in effort to help them. Office hours do not help because he will just explain things the same way as before. He is also very condescending.
Retook his class and ended with a C. I took notes and showed up to every lecture, studied for hours watching the videos provided and doing the reviews and quizzes, and went to him during office hours multiple times for help. Did not help and just told me to study harder. Most stressful class I have taken. Started with 13 participants, ended with 7.
I had to talk to the dean about my experience with Zhu. This teacher is so rude, condescending, and he will literally yell at you if you ask about your exam grade. He does not grade fair at all. Compare your exams with other students after grading ... trust me. Not a uniform grader AT ALL.
He can be very rude. Speeds through lectures & expects us to understand instantly. "WHAT IS IT?" "ANSWER SOMEONE ANSWER!". Not fun to be yelled at when you're trying to learn. Do not take this professor unless you want to teach yourself everything because he does not explain the material in an easy way to comprehend.
DO NOT TAKE HIM AT ALL 0/10 WORSE TEACHER AT THIS SCHOOL HARD TO UNDERSTAND HIM
Professor Zhu belittles you in front of class, speeds though lecture or goes very slow to the point where the next unit will be rushed. Take literally anyone. Tests are worth a majority of your grade and some of the stuff on the test he doesn't even go over so you have to teach yourself most of the material outside of class.
He is not great at teaching. Most of the class is getting around a 50% on the exams, and he tells us it is due to our laziness.
