She's really not that bad (For a French teacher.). Just keep to yourself, pay attention, & do your journals. Don't ask too many questions & end each sentence in "Yum, yum!". I got As in both of her classes.
Excellent Teacher. Anyone who says otherwise is venting. I had her for French 101, 110, and 201. Challenges students with very realistic goals. Shares lots of French/Belgian culture. Sit towards the front of class, be attentive, do the HW. Bon Chance!
Tests count for 60% of your final grade. Super easy content. Teaches to the book.
I took 2 classes w/ her, great teacher, very nice and very helpful. U have to do a presentation in french, but it is so easy. U will have about 3+ parties a semester. Very fun!!!
She'd make a good kindergarten teacher. Treats students like children, lots of games and silly visual aids. Doesn't really understand how to explain grammar too well. Seems more concerned with being popular than actually getting people to learn much.
She keeps things interesting and fun during class. Very good teacher.
Very kind and accomadating to each students needs while still achieving maximum learning quality. It was a lot of homework. The fruits of her class has enabled me to read french writing. Great teacher with patience in all the right areas.
I took her for French 101 and now 110. Good teacher, explains subject clearly and effectively. Tests arent hard as long as you pay attention in class. Only college teacher Ive had that actually makes you participate and never lets you out early :-/
I enjoyed her class, but there's things that could improve. She teaches well with the book, and uses many helpful aids as well; however, she isn't very tollerant of mistakes, and a beginning-level language class has to allow room for mistakes. Take a class with her, because you will learn something.
She is not very understanding and doesn't have time for her students. If there was another teacher to take for this class I would. Use her handouts and do the journals. Don't worry about listening wookbook section only worth 2 points.
She treats her students like they are children or just stupid, constantly repeats useless information on "culture". Does play favorites with students, and if youre not a favorite you don't get to mess up much. Is very nice, but can get on your nerves if you dont like being undermined.
Not clear, plays favourites, not helpful at all. Suggestions: sit towards the front and make sure she knows who you are (or you won't get participation credit). Stay ahead-not just with the class. Fall behind and you're toast. You must be an overachiever to pass this class. Goodluck-youllneedit
Great teacher! - high energy - makes learning lots of fun. Really expects you to learn French - gives good feedback with prompt grades on Blackboard, etc. Not very easy! - a lot of graded things and no curve so you have to work all the time. Sit near front - answer often - keep up with cahier.
One word, energetic! Just what you want from a language teacher. She can be a little condescending, but it may be a Belgium thing:) If you answer a question wrong she has a way of making you feel pretty stupid, but always be raising your hand, participation points are very helpful.
I enjoyed this ccourse very much. It was challenging, especially keeping up with the increasing vocabulary - but it can be done! This professor is highly motivating and interested in everyone learning a new language. She encourages lots of class participation so that everyone is involved!
Motivational, funny, clear, and helps you understand. You need to ask questions, study the material, and participate. She's got a gift at accomodating each student their own needs all while teaching a whole class. Very organized, friendly, and a great professor.
Overly helpful for anyone who wants to learn. She also cleans up REAL nice! ;)
She is enthusiastic about helping students. She really cares about the students. Showing up and participating in class is half the battle. If you're a slacker student she will know it, but she is still understanding for excuses. Overall she's a great teacher.
Stresses easily, unapproachable if she's in a hurry. Has favorites, but just do the homework, study, & GO TO THE LAB! But you must show up to class at least 5 min. early to get your cahier checked off. Goes thru lessons thoroughly, reviews for tests well. STUDY HARD & GOOD LUCK!
Excellent French teacher, but at times she can be very snappy and mean. Has serious problems remembering names. I had her 4 semesters. Very thourough. Tests on what she lectures. Show up, take notes and pay attention. Seem interested, I suggest making friendly conversation outside of class.
she's pretty grumpy
she chooses favorites. if you try, make extra efforts, sit up front and she simply does not like you, your style of dress, your hair, etc...you grade slips. she is picky and sharp tounged. compliment her looks, tell her how wonderful she is, and you're on her side. it is dissapointing that you need to brown-nose mme. maher to get a high grade. :(
for 100 i was always quiet, and slid by with a C for 110, things got tough and she had no problem giving me a lower grade. in the middle of the semester i had an F. But i actually approached her, went to the tutor, and together she was EXTREMELY lenient in changing past grades i had. i finally passed with a C (definetly more than what i d
Not a nice person. Made french very hard to learn and boring. I don't recommend this class. I wanted to take french from another professor who apparantly does't work there anymore, so I was stuck with this lady. I wish I'd have taken German.
She was very helpful. This class is hard, so you have to pay attention, but she is very nice. If you have a situation, she is very understanding, and takes everything into consideration. I am taking her again, and I HIGHLY recommend her to ANYONE who has an interest in learning French :)
Very hard. Pay attention to the french culture remarks because those sneak up on your tests. If you are right on time you are late, because she expects you to be very early. Only will let you ask questions on her office time-never before or after class. You will learn a lot if you pay attention and do all your homework everynight. Lots of work
Strict but very fair and makes sure that her message is clear. Prepares class well for exams and only tests on what she teaches. Makes allowances for special hardships. Great teacher!
Be careful, if she is in one of her moods don't talk to her. Don't tell her she is wrong! Don't try to go near her office unless it's during her office hour. I found she was hard but fair. She hates tardiness. She loves dark chocolate -fyi for the french party.
Great enthusiastic teacher. Very structured and strict but also very helpful. Wants you to succeed.

Very good teacher. One can always make appointments to see her during office hours. Will also see students without an appointment if she has time. Very helpful, although strict. Gives a lot of homework. Prepares well for tests and wants you to succeed.
She can be pretty easy once you figure out her system. Very rarely does she test you on vocab. If you really concentrate on verb conjugation and grammar, you will get no lower than a B. She tells you everything you need to know for the tests and quizes. She also gives away free points for participation, Lab time, and homework. She can be very easy.
She is a good teacher, she has her moods like everyone else,u just don't want to be on the receiving end of her bad mood, it will make you feel so stupid. other than that, study the grammer, tests are practically all grammer.
MUCH more laid back in her upper level French classes. Still there's emphasis on grammar on the exams, but she checks homework much much less frequently. She also liked to chitchat the first 20 minutes in French and it made time FLY by once people got into it. Very clear professor, make sure you KNOW her office hours or she gets upset.
She is strict at times, but she does want to help. She is very clear about what she is going to test you on. She tends to give most of the homework during the week, then give you a break over the week-end.
My spouse is from france and therefore was fluently french. Since being around it for years I wanted to learn more, however this professor confused me. Acorrding to my french family she taught many words wrong and bad pronuciation. I spoke better french prior to taking her. Willing to help, but not helpful.
Instructor uses variety of methods to motivate students and help them learn. Enjoys teaching and very friendly, not bad to look at either (very pretty). Lots of fun, but will make you work.
I spoke French prior to taking but wanted to learn more writing. She was willing to help if in good mood, but problem was she had split personality... 1 min happy, next pissed. Was confused with homework assingn. clarity as she would ramble. Very critical & she did not properly speak many words. I got a C even though French fluent & 1 of her fav's
Madame Maher is somewhat nice 10% of the time. She has a problem with students taking notes while shes teaching and she doesnt like it when you open your text book for reference. She has a split personality that can change moods from one minute to next. Over all its an easy class.
Excellent french instructor, with bad attitude. Although I learned a lot in her class,l she has unique teacher methods and is very knowledgable in various areas, her attitude can use some improvement. Typical french lol, although Belgian. Good class, good students, decent teacher. I would recommend.
A good teacher who you can tell likes to teach french but has one heck of a strange personality with moods that go up and down like a rollercoaster. If you can deal with that then you should probably take her.
Class is basically a review of all the grammar learned in 101/102. New vocabulary, though. Didn't like the text for 201 as much as the book for 101/102. If you pay attention, it's easy to get a good grade. She likes students who seem to care about the class (i.e. get good grades or try really hard to improve their grades). Does want to help you.
I didn't take 101 but spoke French fluently going into the class. She truly has an amazing graspp of the language and its nuances though sometimes she's too much of a stickler for the grammar rules and doesn't teach it as modern conversational French. Goes over some stuff till it is painful, but applies culture very well. Has mixed moods and neve
I like her. She is Belgian, which offers a unique perspective on Europe and culture. She keeps the class interactive, requires extra-curricular activity that encourages a student to stretch beyond the simple boundaries of a textbook/workbook combo, and she allows students to spend time conversing with one another.
This teacher has worked hard to be the professional she is. She tries hard to relate to students and to make her class fun but also manages to communicate her good knowledge of the subject. I agree that she is moody. She's organized and thourough and fair.
I took Professor Maher during a four week intersession semester. Her class was very structured and organized - I knew exactly what assignments I needed to do to receive the grade I desired. She is upset rather easily and is very up and down mood wise. However, she is helpful and can provide great insight to the French language and culture.
Very professional! She wants make sure you leave the class with a good understanding of the subject. Highly recommended. If you want an easy A and don't care about learning anything, go somewhere else. If you want to learn, and remember what you learned, you should take Chantal! Ps. Elle viens de belge mais elle est très américainne, and proud of it
Prof Maher is fastidiously organized and this is a great thing because students know what to expect and what to do. At one and the same time she is demanding and yet helpful to the extreme. She has rules and at times you'll sense that you had better be quiet. But then she'll be so much fun and energize her class with all that she has planned!
Anyone who says Chantal is moody is wrong. She is very helpfull and likes students who pretend to love french. She is also funny and cracks jokes about the language. Helps you with rules (bleah!) in a very funny way. My advice to future students- study for the quizes and exams! It's very simple if you pay attention in class!
awesome teacher. makes the learning very easy. if you stay caught up on all of the chapters you will do fine. very funny and nice
Really good teacher. She hates people who think they already know French going into the class. A lot of hw, but she just glances at it, and you get an answer key with it. Test are basic. She expects you to know french after 5min of listening to her speak.
The problem with this teacher is that she thinks her time is the most important thing in the world. She isn't a bad teacher in the sense of material, but her horrible attitude and constant put downs make you not only want to ditch, but she makes you not want to learn as well. I got a solid B in the class but she needs to get an attitude adjustment.
In my honest opinion I dont know why she chose education as her profession. Her poor attitude in class makes you resent the material and the class in general. She is angry the moment you walk in to class taking away all redeemable aspects of the course. I regret taking this class!
A very good instructor across the board. And very hot!
Extremely helpful nice teacher I would recommend her to anyone....seems to have an attitude at times and gets into everyone's business
She is often very rude, condescending, and disrespectful to her students and seems to think of them as little children. Her very difficult and uneven personality detracts from her considerable knowledge about French and teaching.
I disagree that Mme. Maher is moody. She is very helpful and will go over the material until everyone understands it. Her tests are multiple choice Scantron, and you have to do an oral presentation or group presentation for her every semester. I took 102 through 202 with her and loved it. She won an award for excellence in teaching. I recommend her
I had no prior French before which made it super hard because she teaches like we all already know some french. She talks French too much and doesn't translate her sentences, then expects you too know what she's saying. Plus bad adittude
Prior to the class I had no interest in french, but now I'm quite the opposite. She made me interested in the culture and the language. She uses props and anything at her disposal to HELP YOU! She's great and taking her 102 class this summer. Keep in mind it's not an easy A but very educational and very structured, making it easy to learn.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IN THE SUMMER its a 4 week intensive class. Other than the length of time, Shes pretty okay. Yes she is pretty moody and PAY ATTENTION, cause she hates when people dont listen to her. Don't be late cause she will take points off and not grade your hw. There is an oral group presentation, and about 4 exams. Overall not too bad
I don't know how people here can say she's helpful. You practically have to teach yourself. She makes you use rossetta stone, and do homework from the book. All she does in class is review it. If you don't do your homework, the next day you go to class you won't know what she's talking about.
Professer Maher is not a easy teacher but if you put in the effort you will learn a lot and get a good grade.
One of the most boring classes I've ever taken (and I love French as a subject). Lessons were monotonous; mostly somewhat shoddy powerpoints of vocab words. Everything I learned, I taught myself straight from the book. She's pretty condescending; has a tendency to talk to you like you're six years old. I'd never take another class with her.
She is an EXCELLENT teacher but you have to put the necessary work into learning.
Maher is an amazing professor. It is clear that she loves what she does. Her class is not easy, but if you put in effort you will pass. She will only be condescending to you if your behavior calls for you to be treated that way. Visit her in her office hours from time to time and she will definitely love you !
Excellent Teacher - High Expectations and support for student success. You get your money's worth. Every minute is filled with instruction!!
I did relatively well for getting back into french, hated the rosetta stone but the workbook is easy, answers provdided on blackbook but attendance and participation is a must. quizzes are pretty easy and the group presentation wasnt too bad. doesnt waste any time getting to the subject. do not avoid missing if possible class but good teacher.
I was a little scared to take French at first, but when I got into Mrs. Maher's class, she was VERY helpful and fun, and I learned to love it. She's very open to questions, and she doesn't mind re-explaining things. She likes to smile and encourages you to participate. I highly recommend her.
I like the subject of french, however i thought Chantal was very condescending at times. Mostly everything is on Rosetta Stone and personally that taught me more then the professor. Not terrible but you have to know some french going into her class. Always have a scantron also and dont be late.
She is very friendly, but can come across as rude. I think it's just her culture. She offers a lot of help, is very clear, and does a lot of review. She teaches straight from the book, so it's a bit dry. There is a group presentation we spent a ton of time on, and was only worth 10 points. You will be called on, so pay attention. Minimal homework.
Took her for 101, 201, & 202. Go to see her in her office, she'll like you better if you do. She does not always have the best explanations, but her handouts are helpful. Her tests are multiple choice but hard and worth 20-30% of grade. Each course has about 5-8 quizzes, 4-5 tests, homework due for each class (very easy), & 1 group presentation
Loved Prof. Maher. She was so helpful and kind and is a fair grader. There was a quiz after each chapter and 2 test (midterm and final) Overall, a fabulous teacher. Pay attention in class, participate, and study and she'll love you!
Superb instructor! I really appreciated how well run & organized the course is. We had a review before each quiz and if you studied the review you had no problems with the quizzes. She also had excellent reviews for the mid-term and final. You would be hard pressed to find a better class. I would highly, highly recommend her class.
Long lectures, book and code is required, don't be late, never skip class
She's an okay teacher. She has a weird teaching style where she will assign homework online for a lesson that we haven't even learned yet and then she will go over it the next day in class, so you basically have to teach yourself. And she absolutely won't allow talking with each other in class or checking your phone, she will call you out!
If you're on the fence about taking French with Professor Maher, DON'T BE! I've always struggled with secondary languages, particularly French, but I could not have asked for a more compassionate and patient woman to help me do so. She cares about her students, genuinely loves to teach, and will meet you at your level. 100/10! yes 100!
The people complaining about this Prof are probably the ones acting like 7th graders. Prof Maher explains the rules of French grammar as well as anyone you'll find. Surprised to have multiple choice for midterm and final in foreign language. Classes are more teacher centered than student centered. But this is an Easy A if you do the work.
Lecture heavy and not the most exciting class. Actually, it can get quite boring and arduous with the constant lecture, monotonous group work, and her tendency to come off as a bit rude. She has disregarded questions and have gotten snarky with students before. Wish there was more options for teachers at the French 2 level and beyond.
Good teacher overall, but makes it feel like a high school class. Lots of worksheets, group activities and a really annoying group project at the end work far too few points. Can be really nice but also condescending or annoyed at lack of participation sometimes. Great at teaching the subject.
Super easy class as long as you do what's expected of you! Homework and lectures can get very boring at times but it's not a terrible class :) She always reviews quiz material before you take them which makes them easy!
This class can be summed up in two words: It's doable. It's not the most exciting class or teacher for that matter. Tip: come to class, attendance matters as it is used as points at the end of the semester!
She expects you to speak French all the time, which is ironic because if you spoke French, then you wouldn't need to take her class. Also, if you have a question, don't ask a friend, ask her or she'll get mad.
If you're looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you; faithful participation is crucial to both your grade and learning the language. However, if you're looking for a professor who cares about what they are teaching and invests in their students, I would highly recommend Prof. Maher. I thoroughly enjoyed her class and would take it again.
She is a great teacher but extremely rude. She did not make me excited to learn for class, and if anything I hustled through so I wouldn't have to deal with her again. Make sure to do all the homework and go to lectures.
Was unable to pass any of her French classes, she did not offer much help and was rude at times to me and other students.
Expects class to speak fluent French. Which makes little sense, since you learn hardly anything except random anecdotes from French history and repeated basics of any French 100 class. Also makes you do tedious group projects where again, you learn hardly much at all.
Requires you to buy the textbook along with the Supersite access code, which is $187 online! 2 tests are worth 60% of your grade (midterm and final). Don't try to sell the book to anyone at Palomar, since this class REQUIRES the code! She feels like this class deserves more time, even though it's a hybrid. Too bad she's the only professor in french
I just wanted to say that Professor Maher is a great French Prof. if you are looking forward to learning French she is surely one of the best French educators.
For context, this was a hybrid class, meaning about half of the class should've been conducted online. Instead of half the class, nearly all of the learning time was spent online, and our in-class meetings were spent on testing and "review". Prof. Maher is big on picking favourites, so good luck if you've drawn the short stick.
There's a reason French courses are being cut from spring semesters.
Do not take this professor. She lets the book teach and do all the work for her, even with the online assignments. She's so educated that she's not able to keep the lessons simplified. Basically nukes the material. Can't dumb it down to simple concepts, which should be how the class is ran. Nice to your face but a very rude individual. Intentional?
Professor Maher is a great teacher for good students. If you're looking for an easy A, chose another class and a different language. This was a hybrid class, so our class time was filled with activities and lecture. She has high standards and high expectations, but is more than fair with grading. She is always willing to help outside of class.
