Cinema and violence, an easy and fun class..sit and watch movies with no tests, just a paper :) and the movies are amazing, who gets credit for watching Pulp Fiction and Natural Born Killers?!?!
Cinema and Violence. We did not watch Pulp Fiction nor NBK. No movies past year 1989. Took up too much time trying to lecture and missed final two films. One film made after year 2000 might have been nice. But still we watched movies...

Really nice prof. Always there to help you when you need it. I feel bad for missing her class alot cuz its in the morning, but its a great class to take, and she makes it enjoyable. When she lectures it can get boring a little, but its worth it.
Cinema and Violence is a great class. You learn how to watch movies to get something out of them in this class. There is very little work to do, and you watch movies all the time. Chantel is great and fair.
While it's awesome that we watch movies all the time and write very short papers on them, she is SO BORING. Lectures put me to sleep, she is a bad public speaker, seems nervous in front of her students. Nice lady, helpful, grades fairly. Easy A.

movies are good, lecture is boring
She is very fair and interesting. She does talk a lot but that's what lecture is about. SHe knows what she is talking about. The class work is minimal and has a very laidback setting. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAKING THIS CLASS.
Took the class in Spring 04. Awesome class, lots of fun, and a great prof. Dunno what the prior Asian kid was saying, she was nice towards me. If you need a gpa booster, deff. try and take a class with her. Class is a breeze if you show up for the movies and listen to her notes. Was very quick to answer questions and definitely not a bad class.
What a horrible professor, she talks to much, her english is bad- laughable at best. her selection in movies is atrocious- she talks to much- put it this way I could always get osme good sleep in that class.
This class was ultra boring and professor was very boring...however, it is an easy way to get ur A gen. ed.
watch films half the time, most of which are weird foreign films. takes attendence, participation counts - shes hard to understand because of her cute french accent but all together it's an easy course. she doesn't care about late papers, just get it done.
The goal of the assignment is clear yet when she grades the papers she gives random grades out. She has no reason for giving lower grades so she has to dish them out randomly. The class was a joke and I didn't really learn anything that isn't already obvious in film. She takes forever to resond to emails.
helpful, extremely intelligent on cinema. One of the most interesting classes i have ever taken
Besides an unbalanced workload and a final paper that generally lacks all pretense of clarity (or help from Rodais), she's elitist and holier-than-thou to a T. A simple computer error rendered half of one of my e-mails deleted in transit, and she shot back an unprofessional and childish retort that consisted of four lines of her putting me down.
Sometimes hard to understand what she is saying or why she is saying something. Attendance is part of the grade and you watch random pointless movies. Not very hard to get a good grade. You can write like an 8th grader and get an A as long as you write what she asks. Pretty boring but not hard.
You will do well in the class only if you write what she is looking for. Use points that she discusses in class. Just focus on what she wants to hear. Don't write stuff thinking it sounds great because Rodais will most likely disagree with you and state that it is way too obvious. That's the most common mistake.
I really suggest taking this class just because of the exposure to amazing films. It opened by eyes to different forms of foreign film. I did well in the class, but you do have to write long papers and she's sometimes rough.
boooooooooo
I took the class to fulfill the gened"A"and because I like movies. I ended with a better understanding on how to interpret and analyze film. I'm one of those people who's more on the science side and finds it incredibly hard to analyze text/film. However, after writing the three papers and the 10 pg final ppr my skills have definitely grown:) TAKEI
Avoid. Second time I'm taking her. Paper grading is very biased. Will only give out good grades to see what she wants to see. Start an argument, expect a C. Analyze only the way she wants to analyze. How ironical. Lecture's are useless. Last two rows are filled with laptops. You will gain tetris skills.
Class is easy. All you have to do is go to class and watch movies and then go to the discussion after the movie and right down about 1/2 of what she says and youll get an A. Only 4 papers of 2-3 pages which are pretty self explanatory. Discussions can be boring, but just go and youll get an A.
I had her for Fall 2008 for Filming the Real and will be taking her Sci-Fi cinema class in Fall 2009. Can be a little hard to understand sometimes with her French accent, but other that I thought she was very nice and open to help you out. Papers tend to be "randomly-graded" as you can do incredibly well on one paper, and then bomb the next.
It is not hard to get an A in CINE 285L if you take notes on what she says about each film and then use those notes to help write your papers. Attendance is mandatory, so plan on showing up every day (the movies shown are interesting anyway). Also, it's not necessary to do the weekly reading she assigns because she summarizes them in class.
Rodais is super nice and a great prof. I took "Alien Encounters" with her in the summer of 09 and it was a lot o fun. She give out small readings which are kind of boring but easy to get though. The essays are pretty clear about what she wants and she's a very fair grader. If you put the time in she's totally worth working with.
Although it's hard to understand her accent at first, you get used to it. The class is really easy. She basically tells you exactly what to write for the essays. She also is very generous with extensions and always understanding.
This class would be amazing if she never spoke. 2 hour lectures of this is cruel and unusual punishment. The Godfather was cool though.
If you love film, take it, you will learn a lot with her. If you have little interest, it could be boring.
Great professor! shes really interested in the subject and makes you interested. you get to watch great movies too: terminator 2, Matrix, star wars, and alot more. fairly easy: 3 short essays and a take-home final. highly recommend the class or any class taught by her!
interesting and enjoyable course. taking notes of her lecture wud be really helpful on the essays and finals but she is hard to understand and repetitive. three shorts essays are easy and the final is an essay that consists five parts which is long but easy if you have notes
If you want an easy A, take a class with Rodais. She's crazy passionate about cinema, and it's cute to a point. Class is almost unbearably boring, but attendance is mandatory, so make sure you show up to class. I didn't pay attention to a word she said, and I still managed to get an A.
Such an easy class. She's adorable, and she knows what she is talking about. The lectures can be a little tough, so bring your mac or something. Otherwise, a very breezy 4 credits. I mean it's a cinema class, what do you expect? Something life changing? Get real, take the class.
LOVED this class. Watched great movies. I did not care for war movies before, but now I love them. Must go to class to watch movies and discuss techniques used. Essays were easy. Easy A. Highly recommended, even if it's just for fun.
Professor Rodais' class was extremely easy and fun. The class requires very little work, and she is willing to let you rewrite essays. None of the essays are difficult anyway, and concepts are made clear through her notes and lectures. Bring a laptop though, as the class is a bit on the long side and can get boring when no movies are shown.
Well selected films, interesting analysis after each, her accent is sometimes hard to understand but not a problem.
A very knowledgeable woman who cares deeply for films and their history. The papers are very simple and all you need to get A's on them is one viewing of the film in class. I would not recommend skipping class, as it's in her commentary that she gives you all you need to know to write the papers. A very sweet lady overall. :)
Class may be boring at times but the movies that she plays are great. Attendance is a must as the discussion is essential to the essays. Just repeat what she says in class and you'll get an A. Class is 3 essays and then a final which is just 6 mini essays. A lot of writing.
Don't take this class if you have a viewpoint that is any different than the professors. If you simply regurgitate what she says in class, you will get an A. Anything else is completely wrong. How does this class make you learn? Useless grading. Needs to get off her high horse and accept other viewpoints. Arbitrary and capricious grading system
Very knowledgeable in cinema, and a great teacher. Take if you want to broaden your knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of movies of many genres and from many countries. She teaches things that will last a lifetime. Take notes … you will need them.
Chantal is a great professor and is incredibly passionate about film, although her lectures can be very dry and boring and you may find it hard to maintain focus. Her voice and lecture flow can at times be very monotone, but that does not undermine her appreciation and passion for documentary filmmaking. An overall interesting course though.
Easiest class A for a college class. Some of the movies we had to write about were in the textbook, so just get the answer there. Take notes on what she says and then restate it in your essay. Show up and sign the attendance for participation credit. 3 short papers anyone can pass and take home final mini essays. Harder for C Gen Ed than W Gen Ed.
An amazing teacher who is passionate about her work. She is organized & will answer every single email you send her within a few hours. Mandatory attendance. 3 papers and a final THAT’S it. class is an easy A if you make time for the papers. She has a heavy French accent but just listen to her guidelines on writing the papers & you will get an A.
I love Sci-Fi and as such going to class was a absolute pleasure. Chantal will make you examine the films in ways that you have never thought before. I took this class as a easy A but got a whole lot more than a grade. Thank you!
Rodais is a solid professor. Very passionate about film. Definitely raised my interest in cinema. Solid selection of films to watch. If you gained anything from the class, you won't be able to watch movies the same. 3 papers, including going to a Harpur Cinema Club screening, and a take home final. Definitely take this class if you appreciate film.
Very informed about the subject, does tend to speak so much she cuts out huge chunks of film though haha. Overall helpful and knowledgeable, you may lose focus when she explains things but she does explain them very well and in detail. Attendance is overly monitored. Helpful and available when needed. Would recommend for this course
Very good professor. A little hard to understand her accent at first, but you get used to it. Great selection of films to watch, and the entire class were take home midterm and final essays. Her main goal was to teach her students cinema, and she is very passionate about doing that.
Absolutely fantastic teacher. A little difficult to understand because of her heavy French accent. However, her insight adds so much to the already amazing films she chooses to show. Papers are easy if you take copious notes. If you love film or you just want to take a laid back class, take this one.
Chantal is a wonderful professor. She is passionate about the material she teaches and truly cares about what the students have to say. She is quick to joke and keeps the class as fun as possible. Her lectures are inspiring in a way that many professors fail to achieve. I have learned so much about cinema that I would have never understood before.
Professor Rodais' class gave me a new insight on films. Although lectures are long when you aren't watching movies, you do watch a ton of films throughout the semester. It's not wise to skip class because attendance is mandatory, and taking notes is important to doing well on her exams. Overall, she's pretty chill, flexible, and understanding.
No test. Just go to class for attendance. You will get a good grade!
I loved this class, I learned a lot of new stuff. Although when we weren't watching movies it was hard to stay awake during class. It is very important to take notes on everything she says that may be important. If you do, It is a guaranteed A.
The class is pretty straightforward and she's really nice. All you need to do well is come and take notes on everything she says and then incorporate those notes into the papers. The movies you watch are all really interesting and her insights and analysis will lead you to view films in an entirely new light.
For cinema majors and those into all kinds of cinema she is amazing. Do not recommend as a gen-ed as it is long and boring if not interested. 2 long papers that she basically gives you your essay if you pay attention and take notes in class. Films are interesting for the most part. Easy A for all. Very nice lady.
Favorite professor of all time I took extra classes to stay with her. She isnt too tough but is fair. Reeeeally likeable and most genuine professor I have met she is incredibly nice and cares a lot for her students. She should be all 5*. Definitely take. Cares for her students so much and we cared for her so much in return!! Really available.
Only reason she isn't 5/5 is cus of students taking her class for easy A who don't even care about cinema and are somehow suprised their lecture cinema class is both a lecture and about cinema. If you don't care about learning about cinema don't take it, you might get bored (like any lecture just for gen ed) but if you care then definitely take!!!!
Remember to follow all of her opinions otherwise you are totally WRONG! Do not have any you own opinions if they are different from this professor. Avoid! Avoid!
A super interesting class! She has a very heavy french accent, but can still understand what she is saying relatively well. Recommend sitting near the front of the class if you want to understand every word she says. Take home midterm and final are quite easy, just make sure you watch all of the films. All in all great class and great teacher
Boring class but pretty easy. Two five page papers and one three page, the only difficult thing is staying awake for class
Chantal Rodais is a lovely, incredibly nice professor. She is always willing to help if you reach out to her. There are only 3 assignments in all--a short paper, a take home midterm, and a take home final. If you go to class, pay attention, and take notes, you can essentially put those notes + some analysis in your papers and get an A in the class.
She's the BEST professor i have ever met in my first two year college life. I even change my major into Cinema after i took her class. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!
She is the WORST professor i have ever seen in my academic life. If your major is not related to Cinema, you absolutely MUST NOT take this course. She does not help her students. Whenever we go to her office, she always ignore us and does not help us. The last but not the least one is that her accent is not understandable because she is French.
She's very sweet and is very helpful. Really a professor that wants her students to succeed. Her french accent is quite strong, so sometimes it's hard to understand her, but you'll get the gist of it very quickly. Overall, great professor and learned a ton about cinema. Would recommend to take for the gen-ed (I think it was the "A" gen ed).
DO NOT TAKE IF NOT A CINEMA MAJOR. Taking this class for the gen Ed now and nearly failed my first midterm. She does let you redo it for a maximum grade of a B. Hard accent. Boring lectures and boring movies. This was thought to be my easiest class and now is my hardest.
She's really smart and knowledgable, and has a good eye for theory and technique. Some students don't really like her teaching style because it's pretty lecture heavy, but I think all of her points are really interesting and well said so I'm a fan. Also a generous grader and very understanding about needing extensions.
Write down exactly what she says in class in your papers and it will be an easy A. No homework besides the take home midterm and final. I got a C+ on the midterm and talked to her and ended up with an A in the class! Recommend as an easy laid back class to chill and watch movies in
Professor Rodais runs a rigorous but fair course, she relays varied and interesting material to students over the course of the semester. Participations isn't mandatory but certainly encourage, it'll help in essay writing etc. Classes she teaches really aren't so difficult, they are however informative and novel. Don't disrespect her either !
The movies are SO boring but you if literally just write down word for word what she says in class and use that in your essays and you will get an A. Also go to her office hours and she will see you're trying and give you an A.
I've taken a total of four classes with this professor. From Cine 122 to Cine 380, Professor Rodais runs an exemplary course. Revisions are permitted for two out of four papers, lectures are interesting and pertinent to contemporary issues. Professor Rodais will not tolerate disrespect in the classroom. Show up, participate, and engage yourself.
She speaks very quietly and it can be impossible to hear her from the back of the room, especially with her accent. I felt her grading was a bit unfair. She took off large amounts of points for minor things and wouldn't listen to any reasoning or defense of your argument, even if you used specific examples from the film with detailed explanations.
Took my senior year thought it would be easy A, turns out if you have never analyzed a movie before it's quite hard. She has office hours and she says you can ask specific questions about your papers then grades them wrong anyways. Don't take unless cinema major.
Definitely would not recommend. This class brought my pre-Med GPA down. There's only 2 grades factored into the final grade, so you're destined to not do well if you do relatively poorly on either paper. Went to office hours, fixed my paper, and she ends up grading them like I pulled a random paper out of the trash. She's also hard to understand.
She's French and has an accent that some might find difficult to understand. The class is graded based on attendance, a paper, a take home midterm and a take home final exam. If you show up, pay attention and incorporate what she spoke about into your papers, you should be fine. Easy aesthetics and writing credit.
Chantal is really understanding, and gives a lot of opportunities to make your grade better or get help. She does have a kind of heavy French accent, but if you pay attention in class and take good notes on her class discussions, you will pass. Participation isn't mandatory but she does take your participation into account for your grade.
Chantal is all that is wrong with the concept of general education requirements. If you are not a Cinema major, DO NOT even consider taking her class. She expects expert-level analyses of the movies she shows and will ruin your GPA if you offer anything less. Please do not be fooled by temptation of two paper and biweekly lectures.
She's one of my favorite professors. I took this for the gen ed and now want to take another CINE. I was first intimated by her but then I saw her during office hours and she's very sweet and cares for her students. She's very passionate about cinema. Only 3 papers for the class, so pay attention and write EVERYTHING when she talks about the films.
MAKE SURE YOU TAKE NOTES BECAUSE HER PAPERS ARE BASED EXACTLY ON WHAT SHE SAYS IN CLASS!!!!! HER ACCENT IS HEAVY BUT TRY TO SIT CLOSER SO YOU CAN HEAR HER
She is the best professor that I have ever had.
Her accent is hard to understand at first but you get used to it. Her lectures were super interesting and the movies we watched were too - not too many were from before the 1970s. Just write down every word she says and writing the essays will be a breeze. You pretty much just have to regurgitate what she says. Also participation helps your grade.
She has a French accent but if you sit close to the front it won't be a problem. It's a midterm essay and a final essay. As long as you write everything she says it is an easy A. I will prob minor in cinema after taking this class very intersting! Also it's a W credit and since it's only a midterm and final this is a good class to get out of W
Watch movies and afterward discuss. Very lecture-heavy. She ONLY talks, no powerpoint, no posting anything online, nothing. So if you miss class, it would be hard to get her notes & there is class attendance. Plus she has an accent, but you get used to. Sure, her lectures can be dry bc she does talk for hours sometimes but very sweet and caring
Took this for the W gen ed and it wasn't bad compared to some other classes that are very essay-heavy. In class, she will shoot you down if what you say doesn't agree with her own perspective. Little respect or tolerance for your own opinion. For essays, you can't think for yourself, you must write exactly what she says in class. Cool movies though
It's very simple, all you have to do is show up and write whatever she says and then write the papers on what she said. On top of that, you can visit her in office hours and she will tell you basically the answers to the essays. Lectures were also interesting. Overall def take for W credit since workload isn't bad and the work is easy
Chantal can be intimidating but she is a genuinely a nice person. You will not do well in her class if you voice your own opinions and put your own ideas or research from some website. Go to lecture and write down EXACTLY what she says, and just spit out your notes on the papers and i promise you If you do this, you will be fine
Grade is from only a midterm and final paper. Very unclear what she wants for these. Claimed I did not answer question in midterm paper, even though I broke it down and answered it part by part. It was just not her own opinion. Obnoxious in class and will not let you voice your own thoughts. If you don't write what she says exactly you won't pass.
Chantal expects students to regurgitate everything she says in class onto paper. Own interpretations are not welcomed. Everything from assignments must be done correctly and there is no wiggle room she gives for mistakes. Participating in class is not a must, but be prepared to defend your answer- she will not respect opinions that dont match hers.
Only wants you to echo her in your papers. Free-thinking is not encouraged, the only right answer is hers. Literally. This class gives you the opportunity for an "easy-A" if you repeat what she says, however that's not as easy/fun as it sounds. Not worth it. Do not take Chantal classes if you can avoid it. Read the reviews.
Super easy sci-fi film class, very interesting and a good choice for the W credit. Professor Rodais is a little non-welcoming for opinions that don't match hers, but if you just keep your mouth shut, be respectful, and regurgitate what she said in lecture, it's an easy A. She's a very cute and pleasant person during office hours. Would take again!
It's true, Chantal does expect you to mimic her thought processes when writing the midterm and final papers but her classes do allow you to draw your own conclusions and experience cinema. She stresses the sybolism of camera angles etc. constantly and that's all you really need to do in order to do well. Almost every lecture is a movie screening.
Absolutely terrible teacher and class. Extremely slow grader and very harsh as well. Not willing to work with students, do not recommend any class with her.
I had this class at 8:30 in the morning and it was just a two hour battle of trying not to fall back to sleep. She also enjoys violent movies
Take a class with Chantal! She's extremely passionate, and cares deeply about her students. She has lots of office hours and gives you chances for rewrites if you need it. For the papers, focus on analyzing specific scenes, mentioning specific techniques and what effect they cause. Participation is not required but she notices when you do, so do!
Hands down one of the best professors I've ever had. Those who are saying that Chantal disregards your opinion in this class are right, but it's probably because their take wasn't accurate--remember, she's been studying cinema for years and knows what she's talking about. Her lectures are amazing and so well thought out. So cultured, and well read.
Very harsh grader and not afraid to fail half the class and then offer a revision where you wont know any grade you receive until the week of finals. Very smart with very little emotion in her speaking, discussion days would be torturous.
She is a terrible professor, only cares for her opinion and does not care about your insight at all. Doesnt try to help you at all if you arent understanding the material. STAY AWAY!!! Worst professor and class Ive ever had, dont think all you will do is watch movies, not worth the torture of her class!!
She is an odd woman and a very odd grader. If you write down everything she says and go to class everytime you can do fine but this is a hard task as its so insanely boring and also reiterates herself constantly. She makes it impossible to listen to her even though that's how you do well in this class, its kind of comical. College is stupid imo
After watching movies she will tell you her analysis of the movie, and any other ideas are wrong. It doesn't matter if you are able to back it up, she won't like it. Harsh grader, she doesn't write notes or have a powerpoint so you have to pick out information from her thick French accent. This class is not an easy fun movie class beware.
Rodais is just self righteous. Any ideas besides hers are wrong and cinema is not a joke major, so if you act like the class is a joke, she won't like you. She's very old fashioned. No phones, no talking and she expects utmost respect. If you treat this class like your major classes, you'll do well. It's also not that hard just take very good notes
Super boring. Just show up to class and make sure to write everything she says down and you will get an A. Its not so hard to understand past her french accent but its harder to keep your eyes open and pay attention. It can get really boring and dull in there, but its just two hours twice a week. Not the worst teacher but far from interesting.
awful, worst professor I HAVE EVER HAD, mean, hateful.
You have to show up and right literally everything she says, >3 absences hurts your grade. The papers are basically a regurgitation of her notes. Class was only graded by take home midterm paper (40%), take home Harpur cinema paper (10%), and take home final (50%). Go to help session before writing your paper in order to confirm your ideas with her
Spent a lot of time reviewing notes for this class and writing my essays only to constantly receive terrible grades back. Went to office hours multiple times to ask what to include in the papers she wanted, and still received nothing back in terms of grades. Very boring lecturer, bad graded, stay away, do not make this mistake!!
If you take this class, you're simply looking for a bad time. She is hateful and careless towards her students, the worst professor I've had, stay away!!!!! The bad reviews are all correct.
One of the worst teachers in the school. She is so obsessed with her own opinions its hard to see a reason to take this class. I put in a lot of effort and still got a C, my worst grade of my 3 years in Binghamton, in a cinema class. I felt very mistreated by her in office hours, and in after class discussions. I tried way harder than I should of.
If you take this class, you're simply looking to rip your hair out of your head. She doesn't care for any opinion but her's, even though they are correct. Extremely useless in office hours and offers very little help and care towards your grade. Extremely selfish and does not deserve to teach to students.
Chantal ruined my GPA, she does not care for her students and is willing to fail half the class if she's feeling in a bad mood. Her accent is a bit heavy but not too hard to understand. The real battle is trying to focus on what she's saying in this 2 hour battle against sleep.
Only cares about her opinion, terrible and boring lecturer who offers no help at all during office hours or when you speak to her. Probably the worst professor I've encountered here at Binghamton, made my GPA drop for no deserved reason. Extremely disappointed that she even has a right to teach.
I dont think ive taken a worse class before. One of the most condescending, arrogant, and remarkably boring teachers in the school. I think calc in bing was easier than this cinema class, which im sure is her goal. She does not care to fail everyone, and submitting perfectly good work has shown me that good work isnt enough In fact good work D
You will write two essays thinking they are perfect and contain everything needed. Then you will receive a grade of a C- or D. Shes not afraid to fail half the class. I did better in Calculus. Classes are a constant battle with sleep, and for fun i would count how many times she would say "road movie". If you dont take notes on everything she says.
Everything you need to write your papers are in the class lectures. Make sure to show up to class and take notes on everything she says and focus on the scenes that she shows in class. An analysis paper focuses more on the film techniques used to convey a message/ theme. You can go to her office hours for feedback before you submit your papers.
This class is easy. If you know how to write a decent essay, you should not have a problem. Spend most classes watching movies, some days are lectures but the movie days are great. Professor Rodais is passionate about film, but pretty authoritarian in her views. If you don't agree with her or her view of a movie, there will be clashing of sorts
I was a Cinema major and left to go to another school after taking her class. She wasn't clear with exactly how she wants you to answer her questions during class or on paper. She showed what a joke the cinema department at Bing is like. If that's your major, either change to communications or go to another school. Only 3 papers, no hw, must showup
Only two graded assignments the entire semester, each was a six page paper you can work on outside of class. The assignments can be answered based on discussions during lecture, if you come every day and pay attention they're not difficult. Lots of interesting films are shown in class and participation in recommended but not required.
BAsically, you have 2 take-home 6 page papers for the whole semester and NO other work. You just need to know how to write a good paper and use the right film terms and you'll do fine. Most classes you just sit and watch movies then you discuss after. She thinks hers is the only perspective so if she doesn't like what you say she'll shut you down
Professor Rodais is very knowledgable on the information she's teaching and prepares well for class. About every 3rd class is a screening. While taking notes is not necessary, they will make the two take-home exams (essay format) much easier. If you make sure to use the correct film terms and back up your claims sufficiently you'll do fine.
She has a thick accent and couldnt understand what she was saying If it isnt what she said your opinion is wrong Class is only graded from midterm and final Pro tip: copy EVERYTHING she says in lecture If you dont need this specific class for your degree just take another one with a better professor
Ppl don't expect that film analysis is more based on the director's intents + choices, they go into this class thinking studying the themes/morals is all there is, so they can't accept that their opinions can really just be bad. If you make an actual effort to pay attention she really teaches well the actual critical method of looking at filmmaking
If you are taking CINE121 to knock out a gen-ed requirement, dont do it! Rodais is a really nice woman but that doesnt make up for the difficulty of the class. She expects her students to be able to analyze cinema as if they have always had that ability. Few assingments, a take home midterm and final, and one paper. No computers are allowed as well
Professor Rodais is a fine teacher in that she gives you what you need to know in class but lectures are far from engaging, opinionated, and very long. She definitely knows what she is taking about and provides you everything to be successful, just wasn't the teacher for me. The only grades were two papers but a little effort goes a long way.
I had her during the transition of classes to online, she was very understanding and really cared about her students' well being. The class is based on two big papers but they are fairly easy. I went to class and did not take any notes but still did very well. It's a really good class to fulfill your A gened. She does take attendance though.
People were shocked when she actually wanted us to analyze cinema. The class is broken down into a take home midterm, take home final, and 3 page paper . She offered office hours and assistance but as long as you write down what she says you should be fine. The assignments count for a W so they shouldn't be done last minute, she wants a good paper.
Cine 121 isn't a bad decision to get the A gen ed as you will probably get a good grade in the class. However, get ready for the most boring lectures of all time as she often goes on and on about filming techniques. Fair grader with the midterm and final so if you go to class, take a few notes and put effort into the papers you will get an A.
This class is very straight forward. If you attend a lecture and write down everything that she says you will get an A in the class. Dont bother buying the textbook did not use it one time. There is a take-home midterm and final and one three page paper. All of the answers are provided to you in the lecture!!
Terrible teacher, evil. She will talk for the entire class and your paper must reflect what she states to the letter or you will not do well.
The class is an easy way to get an A credit but you have to reflect her ideas in order to do well. If you go to her office hours and conference with her about the papers she will tell you what she thinks about a film and it's in your best interest to write exactly that. She is a cold lady but is caring, she was accommodating during quarantine.
She is very strict and does not explain anything to you, before embarrassing you for being wrong in your analysis. Her papers are not challenging, but you must write only what she explains and not differ from her thoughts. Her accent is heavy but you will adapt to it eventually. She is kind personally, but rude and disempowering during lectures.
