this guy rules, he's really funny and witty but the subject matter is brutally abstract.
great teacher but should remember his students names
He was very helpful when I took this course. He is very upfront and gives answers to tests with questions before the actual day. I recommend him to anyone who wants to take a laid back gov course.

He was a great prof, he was extremely easy going. And I enjoyed going to class, because he made it seem a bit more fun.
Western Civ. is one of those stupid class where you have to learn so much (world history in one semester?? right!) that you don't learn anything at all. Miller secretly knows this, that's why he is awesome.
nice guy! makes the class easy!
The class was way too large, but he was a great professor. If it was in a smaller class, it would have been better.
He def. knows his stuff. But he is so disorganized. Once we had a midterm and he was 20 mins late and he didn't even have enough exams. So we all had to share and pass around dif. pages of the exam. everyone was cheating. Overall i think hes intelligent and teaches really well.
Very disorganized to the point where he seems bored more than anything else. Easy grades but won't learn much.
Younger end, tall, more cute than hot, knows his stuff, disrorganized (but it's endearing when he's all frazzled), makes time for students, easy grade, SO NICE.
Great professor. Knows his material and makes class enjoyable.
He was really good. He went off subject more than he taught but once you hear one of he letures you good for the entire class. Interesting stories and loves to talk about movies!
my favorite class this semester. he's very nice and funny and makes the class really interesting. it's the only one i never wanted to skip. take him!
HE IS A NICE TEACHER BUT HE DOES NOT STAY ON TOPIC WITH THE SUBJECTS AT HAND. HE IS FUNNY BUT VERY UNORGANIZED. THE TWO EXAMS HE GIVES, YOU ARE EXPECTED TO KNOW CASE BY CASE MATERIAL WITHOUT A REALLY GOOD REVIEW OR NOTES. BUT TURNING IN BRIEFS HE IS VERY LENIENT
Bring a couple of extra pens: you'll need them for all the doodling you'll do. He's a great guy but don't buy the books unless you feel you really need to.
went off topic alot, was inconsistant, disorganized
Yes he goes off topic, and yes at times you want to kill him. But really the man is pretty smart, and he's fair if you go along with him. Not hard, just go to class, take notes and be a student. You'll be fine
Miller is completely disorganized, rambles constantly, doesn't answer his e-mail... he goes off-topic SO MUCH that it's next to impossible to figure out what he's going to put on the tests. Overall, a TERRIBLE teacher. He doesn't know anything about 'Public Law,' which 301 is about, so he fills it up with philosophical ramblings...
I agree with the person below me. And as for the person below him/her, his fairness is based on his personal opinion of you. Just like his grading. I have not once received my midterm from him and I had asked him for it on five different occasions.
Wow. This class was not at all what I expected. Char may be smart but he is a horrible professor. This class is not about the process of law, instead it is all about philosophy.I am so lost in this class it is not even funny. He does not return e-mails so do not bother, you have to go see him personally if you want anything done. Very difficult class
Dr. Miller's okay but he's definitely really disorganized. Seems like an all-around nice guy. This class was more philosophically based than related to law. Vague on assignments but gives you the exam questions the week before the test. I'd take him again.
The class is fairly disorganized, but before a paper, test or midterm happens, Dr. Miller goes over ALL the information he wants to know. You learn a lot of random stuff, but overall, he tells you what he wants to see, and I can't complain with the easy A I got for barely showing up to class just because I paid attention durin the review.
Char is a great guy and makes you laugh a lot, but he also rambles through his lectures and makes it difficult for students to understand the main idea of the lecture. However, he's also very understanding and let us leave class early a lot; and even though I didn't think I "got" the subject, his reviews were helpful and I got a good grade. Easy.
Very intellegent, very knowledgeable teacher. But it's really hard to tell where ramblings end and lectures begin. But he's really helpful if you ask for clarification. Lots of reading and lots of writing, but most of it is on rather interesting material. Good teacher, but he'll make you work for an A.
He's a good guy. Not so much a government class as it is a philosophy class. Get an idea and go with it. You can never be wrong.
I really enjoyed Char's class. He has mega personality and he's really smart. If you just sit back and enjoy the show it's a great class. He's a generous grader. He's a cutie too!
He is not a generous grader, he grades based on who he likes rather than who does their work. He is not organized and he goes off subject alot. I got a C in his class and there have been students who have gotten A's and have even done the final paper for his course. I dont recommend this teacher, he is terrible.
Char is a great teacher. Sure he's unconventional and he goes off and rambles in lectures but his lectures are interesting. He's one of Mason's few govt teachers that actually makes you think. I highly recommend him.
He's the coolest teacher you'll ever get. As for the teaching, he's a bit disorganized, great lecturer, fair grader, and too lenient on his students. I'd recommend him because I enjoyed attending his classes, and you will get something out of them.
Make sure all of the books will be used before buying them. After the return date we were told we wouldn't be using two of the books bought. The syllabus was pointless - dates and grade percentages changed. He is light-hearted, entertaining and less concerned with structure, more with his students reading, analyzing and getting the material.
This professor is great! He gets flustered while talking, which is adorable. He is a fun lecturer- great at explaining topics. The work load is easy- a few briefs due at each class. There are a few quizzes... but the mid term and final has the EXACT SAME QUESTIONS! (just study the quizes and the final review..) Easy A!
I have no idea what we are supposed to learn on this class. His syllabus sucks-he is very disorganized and goes off topic. However, his review sheets tell you exactly what is on the exams. papers are easy, easy grades. Easy A or B but you wont learn anything. So if you value your education dont take him...if you want an easy A..do
he is such a funny professor, goes off topic, but it's worth it. spends too much time with philisophy, which is annoying, but he is overall a great professor. i took him fo4 490 and it was easier than some of my 100 level classes. no textbook
BEST PROF i have ever had, I had him for gov 490 and gov 323! wonderful very funny, very easy grader, i even signed up for his study abroad! can be goofy at times but really intelligent knows his stuff, easy work load and very understanding, really easy about deadlines, most unique prof 1st time i've used utube in a class!! creative!
Makes class fun
You dont learn much in class. Most work is learned on your own. Short answer sections on the exams are quite difficult. Have to know about 60+ court cases to do well.
Great professor. His classes were always entertaining. The book was ok. It cut out a LOT of the caselaw and only left you with part of the opinion. Great discussion though and a very interesting professor.
he is just too cute, it's hard to stand.
Char is one of the two professors I will miss more than anything at Mason. His lectures are very entertaining, and he can break down complex political theory into a manageable way. I wish I could take more classes with him.
Char is just awesome. His personality is the best part of class, but he is still a great prof. Makes hard readings easy to understand. Class was more about religion than I like, but was still interesting. Didn't read and got an A. Take him!!!
I knew nothing about political theory but still managed to walk away with an A. Two reasonable papers, two essay tests that he essentially gives you the answers to...not bad. And he has a sense of humor that makes going to class tolerable, even though it's unnecessary to show up in the first place. Easy class - take if you need upper lvl credits
Great professor! He has an unconventional way of teaching, using cutting edge technology instead of making the students write traditional research papers. He encourages you to think in new ways. He's very philisophical and can get distracted sometimes often going off on tangents. He is a reasonable grader though. He makes the class fun.
Great professor and a fascinating class. Professor Miller changed my life and helped me see the world in a completely new way. I highly recommend anything he teaches. I would DEFINITLEY recommend coming to every class and really paying attention so you can get the most out of it. I really think you'll enjoy the lectures. They blew my mind.
This guy should not teach. He just says anything that comes into his brains. His grading is horrible
Let's just say Char has a hard time focusing on the class... esp. if there's a hottie in it. The classes are a joke, learned absolutely nothing. A huge waste of my money and time. Essays were easy, but he didn't grade a thing (except once and it took forever to get back). Had his TA do everything (which is a good thing). Find a better professor!
This is definitely a philosophy class disguised as a government class. We talked about government for about 30 minutes the entire semester. Lots of reading; the lectures tell his interpretation, but you can argue something else and still get a good grade as long as your argument is cohesive. Given the chance, I would not take this class again.
Prof Miller is pretty good for Govt 490 their is no better option,I took his class over the summer no long 20 page paper Not the most simple or elegant class but it sure was interesting and Unique. Also Took a study abroad trip with him its a nice option as well
Lectures are more akin to class discussion than a lecture. Lots of reading assigned without enough time to really digest/discuss, but it is possible NOT to read ALL the text and get an A. Not exactly crystal clear, but he tries to give you as many points as possible for ANY answers given. Several pop quizzes and tends to ramble in class.
If you're a government major, don't take this class. This is a Greek Philosophy class is disguise. Horribly boring.
(Cute!) No mandatory attendance, gives explicit exam reviews, very willing to pre-review essays, etc. Miller's only drawback is that he has a long turnaround time for returning graded work or responding to emails. Overall, if you take occasional notes and attend the reviews, an EXTREMELY easy A.
Most of what's already been said about Prof. Miller is true. He wants us to utilize Twitter as an effective tool for respectful out-of-class discussions, which I found fascinating. Though he would expect your participation in class, he will be doing most of talking and presenting interesting thoughts and comments for class to ponder and interject.
One of the best professor take him if you can he is very friendly, nice, and easy professor. He really cares about his students and willing to help them to get a good grade. Take him.
Miller's class is one of the more interesting ones. He's a philosophy type of guy- so if you don't like philosophy, you'll probably have a hard time paying attention to the lectures. I didn't read any of the books or plays and still did really well. He changed the syllabus around A LOT, so go to class.
This is a philosophyliterature class, has absolutely nothing to do with politics. The class is titled 'Classical Political Theory', but he rarely talks about politics. The lectures are basically just group discussions about what he thought was interesting when he read the book that morning. No clear structure or reason to this class. AVOID!
Dr. Miller is an AMAZING person. He is extremely understanding and genuine. The class required a huge amount of reading, so if youre not willing to read all the material, you will have a hard time keeping up. His lectures tend to turn into philosophical discussions, hence the need to read the material in order to participate. If you can take him!
Hard asking for help over email. Class discussions were interesting and philosophical in nature. Not too much politics.
Professor Miller was my honors thesis advisor a lifetime ago (2003). I have since graduated from law school and have been a practicing attorney for 8+ years. He is still one of my all time favorite professors. Incredibly smart and engaging and one of the reasons I still hope to return to teach myself one day.
Probably the coolest professor on campus. I never took a class on philosophy or Ancient Greece but I care about material I don't know. Finally I mastered multiple concepts of "The Republic," US Economy, Financial Crisis, existence of money, and how people rely on money for everyday life. Inspiring, would take a class with him in a heart beat!
Two fairly long papers,4 short quizzes, and a short answer/essay mid term and final. Papers are time consuming but he grades them very fairly. Mid term and final are long but not bad provided you take good notes in class and read the books. An A is definitely attainable.
His class is very fun, partially due to his own personality and ability to get sidetracked. He cam be hard to reach by email, but if you knock on his office door, he's more than willing to help. Read and have an opinion. Material is deeply philosophical, which can be interesting. Definitely a fun guy to have these philosophical discussions.
He's a great man, very funny and smart. Test are hard but if you read you may get an A. I barely read and i did okay in the class. He goes off topic a lot but a lot of what he says is in class discussions will pop up on tests and quizzes. He's chill I liked him, also very caring.
terrible. rambles in circles, never gets to a point. doesn't teach anything, its just a discussion. maybe that's philosophy for ya but he never taught philosophy, he just hems and haws and asks what we think. teach please! and then expects us to write huge papers on stuff he didn't teach us. nice guy but bad teacher.
He's atrocious. For a level 300 course, he expects students to read two entire books weekly. Almost all prevalent to philosophy and no mention on politics, which this course should be about. He goes in circles and never really gets to the point during lectures then expects us to write a 10 page paper? Let alone a 5 page one. Also he does pop quizes
hes a good guy and is really personable but the content of the class doesn't resonate with the topic at hand making it almost unbearable to hear the rambling. If your considering taking his class go ahead just be aware of being confused 9/10 times.
For those who have complained about his class, its laughable. I graduated 17 years ago from Mason an Dr. Miller by far has had the most impact on me to this day. Ive learned to be a critical thinker and to participate in the world around me. Hes personable, but also makes you think for yourself and earn your grade. I still live Nietzsche.
Really awesome professor, and his sense of humor always made lectures really easy to get through. The midterm and final are easy to write as long as you participate in recitations, or just read the material. When we first went virtual, the professor took us on an assassins creed tour through the Acropolis which was super unique, and very fun!
Honestly this class was super easy he was a really nice grader and he was a really nice guy. My only issue with his class is there was so much homework.
He is very sweet and understanding, but this class was horrible. I dreaded going to GOV 101 twice a week, the class has no structure and is completely discussion based. I feel that the professor did not try to guide the convo and it was the same three people just saying their opinions for a hour. Easy class, but not worth it.
no structure in class. discussion based. students talk all class. super hard to learn cause he doesnt teach ANYTHING (literally nothing). only way to learn is by reading EVERYTHING outside of class but we never discuss it in class. his assignments are so vague, you dont know if youre doing it right. dread this class every time i go.
I was excited about this class, but disappointed to find that there is no structure to the lectures, and two or three conceited students just ramble on about their own opinions the whole time. I took many similar classes in high school, but this was too unorganized for my taste. Papers are also graded too heavily as he gives very vague topics.
don't.
I never have written a review before but felt I had to for this professor. By far the worst gov class I have ever taken. The amount of readings assigned each week is more than some of my 300 and 400 level classes. Also he lets his lectures be dominated by obnoxious students. I recommend staying away from this prof I wish I looked closer to RateMP.
Professor Miller is an entertaining and insightful professor. He focuses on having strong class discussions where students can give their insights on the assigned readings in a fun way. The tests are easy and the essay prompts are open enough for you to write however you want. Show up, listen and you'll easily pass this class with a smile.
I genuinely loved my time in Prof. Miller's class. His class dealt with a lot of abstract ideas and philosophy but he always made those concepts feel dynamic and fun to engage with. Prof. Miller is the type of professor who ends up making you excited to learn the content simply because he's the one teaching it to you. Genuinely a great person too.
Prof. Miller gives gov students what they desperately need: a sneaky introduction into the realm of the classics, philosophy (both ancient and modern), and art. Lots of reading. you WILL have to read summaries but read as much as you can, when you can; read 2-4 texts carefully. Listen to the themes he is looking at and look for them yourself.
A nice person and a very easy class, but the material can be super boring, and the lecture typically gets derailed pretty easily by students participating.
Professor Miller doesn't know what he's talking about. He cites Sigmund Freud for historical and religious evidence and engages in cultural-ethnic erasure and blatant pro-colonial sentiments including the belief that no group can come up with their own ideas and must instead have a foreign founder. He also will not give you any style to write in.
He's a really nice guy, not my favorite class though. He's a chill dude, there was just too much work for a 101 class. Would take again, especially if the work was toned down.
If you are not required to take this class, take an alternative. This class feels as if the professor just wants to talk about whatever he wants for an hour and 15 minutes. The class was messy and didn't feel like I was learning anything of value rather just someone talking about how they felt they were interpreting the reading. Professor was nice.
This class had a ton of readings. Some of which were entire books, others were long articles. The class was often dominated by specific students talking, everyday. There were a total of 6 assignments (that were graded) for the semester. 2 tests, 2 quizzes, and 2 essays. I wouldn't necessarily say this class is difficult, it just wasn't the most fun
Mostly about religion, awful experience for atheists like me. Tons of reading. Prof let 2-3 students talk forever, and he would often go on tangents. Quizzes/exams filled with questions about obscure details in the books. To learn about how religion is a tool of oppression, just read Bakunin's God and the State, don't waste 4 months of your life
This class was great. However, it is very heavy on philosophy and religion, which i did not expect. There is a lot of reading for this class, but there is no homework, and hardly any grades. He only graded two exams, two essays, and two quizes. sometimes he did go offtopic on rants. This is a great class to take if you like to read. Class was small
This class was very nice. There are hardly any grades and no homework. But there is a lot of reading. We read multiple books and lots of other articles and parts of books. If you go to lectures and pay attention in class, he will give you the answers to the questions on the exams. He does periodically go on rants and get offtopic but overall good.
Professor Miller is among one of the kindest, most understanding professor I have ever had. He is truly accommodating and practical. That alone though, I will not take his class again. The structure was very inconsistent from week to week, and the lectures were hard to follow. Essentially, for a 100 level course, it was unnecessarily difficult.
Professor Miller is a phenomenal person, and will be very understanding with grades, whether it's through making up quizzes or challenging the grade you might've gotten on an exam. However, his class lectures often seem to go on tangents, and oftentimes you might be asking yourself what the point of what you're learning is.
This class is dominated by lectures. If you don't show up to them, you'll likely get lost and not understand the readings the way he wants you to. Often during lectures, he gets distracted and goes on random tangents. There are very few graded assignments. Don't take this class if you don't want to read a lot.
This class consists of 50% vaguely discussing philosophical topics and 50% completely off-topic and unhinged political ranting. Seriously, I came in late to one class by about 2 minutes to find the professor ranting about the current administration, thinking I missed something. 25 minutes later we were "now ready to start class". Torture.
This professor is a tough grader so make sure you are ready to be engaged and read regularly. Hard especially for a 101 class.
Professor Miller is a really good guy, however this class is not good in my opinion. He went on small tangents for most of class and talked about nothing we needed to discuss, but his office hours were helpful to attend. This class has way too much philosophy to be a GOV 101 course .
i was interested to see all of the bad reviews, i really liked this class. it's true that he goes on tangents a LOT but if you participate in discussion it is very interesting and becomes a sort of discussion based class. lot of philosophy involved. extra credit offered. exams aren't hard, he gives the questions a week before and grades fairly.
The teacher himself is good! The readings he has you do are necessary, but helpful occasionally. His TAs lost a handful of students' papers from the beginning of the year and did not tell us until the last week. They told us to just resubmit it, but they never gave us the papers back. But the teacher is a nice dude and goes on tangents a lot.
Professor Miller is one of the nicest professors that I had this semester. That being said the class is pretty difficult. The lectures can get pretty esoteric, the readings can be pretty heavy and are very important, and the open response questions on the test can be challenging. Professor Miller is great but I would recommend a different professor
Chill professor outside of class but really irresponsible and disorganized, we didn't even had any slides
