This class was not difficult if you read her slides and look over the book. Thremochem is prolly the hardest section of the class, be prepared for that test. Also Lab Graders are intense! Other then that show up, listen, review slides. She makes it easy to pass this class if you put in a bit of work. 3 Exams 1 final 10 Quizes Online Hwork + La
This prof will always help if you need it. Relaxed grading scale rocks! Thermochem is rediculous, but will be with anyone you take. Prof makes tough material understandable. Also, do not mess with her TA or Hayden will cannibalize you!
She is one of the worst chemistry teachers I have ever had. Half the time she is unable to explain her own example problems and when you ask her questions she puts you down and makes you feel dumb. If you can avoid taking her as a teacher, do it!
THIS TEACHER IS AWESOME! I HAD HER FOR CHM 157 AND I PLAN ON TAKING HER AGAIN FOR 158. I WISH SHE TAUGHT ORG.CHM. (MAYBE SHE DOES..BUT I DONT SSEE HER LISTED IN THE REGISTER LOG) BUT ANYWAY THERE IS A QUIZ EVERY WEEK (YOU CAN COUNT ON IT) ONLINE HOMEWORK DUE AS WELL AND 3 EXAMS (ALL PRETTY MUCH STRAIGHT FORWARD) MAKE SURE YOU STUDY. IT'S A MUST!
She is a great teacher. You will learn alot. Her exams are straight forward from what she lectures. You will be prepared for everything. Take her! If you have any questions go to her office hours because she takes note of who comes in! Good luck!
Hayden's an okay prof. She's not the best at explaining the complicated material, but she'll try to help clarify. Study her power points for the exams, they really help.
A good teacher who cares alot about her students. Come to class and study your powerpoint and you will do well!
She tries very hard to help students understand what she's teaching. She's very willing to help you during office hours. Great Teacher!
She was extremely boring and put me to sleep every time!!! Professor Hayden became defensive when students asked questions and all she did in class was read from the slides. She does post everything on moodle so going to class is not necessary at all. I would not take her again for any other classes.
Had the pleasure of having Dr. Hayden for both the lecture and as a lab TA. She?s very passionate about what she teaches and goes out of her way to help anyone who asks. Works through problems in class, so show up. She even added an optional lecture on fuel cells (her background) which was a big help. Would definitely recommend her class!
Very straightforward exams. Provides practice quizzes with answer key and study guides. If you study those, you will get a B in the class with ease. Ended up with a 3.5. Would take the class again with her. Way better than taking it with Russell. Very knowledgeable, sometimes willing to help, other times not. Bottom line, above average professor.
Her quizzes and tests weren't THAT difficult, they were pretty general, though you had to do your share of studying and understand the material. The only thing that bugged me was small amount of questions on her tests (I think it was 25?), so 2 wrong puts you at a 90%. But I thought everything was fair.
great professor! she makes chemistry easy to understand and she truly wants the class to succeed. A bit of studying is required, and i definitely recommend you do the end of chapter problems in the textbook before taking exams. I got a 4.0 :) take her!!
DR. HAYDEN MADE 3 HOUR ANALYTICA CHM LAB GO BY FAST. GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR! SHE WILL PUSH YOU WHEN YOU NEED IT BUT IS VER FAIR.
It's an overall tough class. Tests were only an hour long so they were mainly on comprehension of the chapter so go to class and pay attention and do the homework. Homework is easy grade booster
First, chem is a hard class over all but she gives you SO much helpful material to understand and practice it. Attend the SI or whatever its called, ask questions, do the hw, STUDY and you will do fine :) she is VERY helpful if you need it
A+ professor! Friendly, crystal clear and explains the material as if it were as easy as 2+2=4. Some people struggled but if you do it is all on you. She goes above and beyond what most profs do. Weekly quizzes, three exams, final, hw, lab. How anyone could grade her below a 4 on the 3 main criteria is beyond me. Umich grad/worked in auto ind.
Prof Hayden's passion for chemistry is so cute!! Her tests are fair and she tells you exactly what's on them. She is extremely helpful and cool. Highly recommend her :)
I die a little inside every time she talks....
Very helpful at explaining material. She makes everything seem so much easier compared to the other options for profs at this university. Taking her class is a must if you are unsure about how well you will do in chem. Make sure you study notes/smartwork/book work and you will surely attain an A if not close to it!
She gives a lot of examples and is very helpful.
You can't ask for a better Gen Chem Professor. She makes everything as clear as possible and makes the exams fair. Simply do the questions she recommends and you will do well. She loves chemistry and she isn't shy about it but that's exactly what you want in a professor.
Attendance is not mandatory (no iClicker questions), I highly recommend going. You'll actually learn something and do well on tests. Very easy to understand powerpoints, great clarification, and spends Recitation going over problems that will appear on the test/Smartworks. Work your schedule around getting her as a teacher, you won't regret it.
Very good teacher. Tests are from the notes and has quizzes that are easy to get at least an 8/10 on. Ended with a 3.7.
Hands down best professor I have had at oakland. Although the class is tough, she really keeps the class involved by incorporating practice problems in with her lectures. I would take a class of hers again for sure!!
She is a great chemistry professor! She puts her lecture notes on moodle before class & is easy to follow. She is easy understand & answers any questions you may have, no matter how stupid. Attend the practice problems sessions & do the extra book problems she assigns, & you'll do great in the class. She doesn't curve anything except the final.
She explains everything well but tends to be very boring. Talks on and on about one thing so if you take her in the morning you'll fall asleep. You have quizzes every week in class, as well as exams and online homework. The quizzes and homework can really help your grade. Go to S.I. because this isn't a blow off class but overall good professor
Awesome teacher! She is very clear and does multiple practice problems in class. She is one of the best teachers I have taken at OU. I definitely recommend her. I easily got a 4.0 in her class- however you do need to study but going to class is extremely helpful.
Professor Hayden is an amazing teacher and my only regret is that I registered too late to get into her Chem 2 lecture next semester. She is very good at explaining the material and gives you enough practice to feel you've mastered the information before a test. She's also friends and very open to questions in class. I highly recommend her!
she is not helpful at all and you can never ask her questions
Horrible Prof. Paid to teach myself. Studied consistently and still had a hard time passing exams. She's stand-offish when you try to ask her something and not helpful during office hours. My lab professor was much more helpful than her.
One of the best. Really loves teaching and her students!! Friendly and caring! Very difficult subject. I did not pass but am taking her again. Study, go to class-her power points are great,go to SI, exams hard but she covers everything. Very clear, passionate, will do whatever it takes to help you succeed. One of the best at OU. Take her class!!
Never went to class, got a 4.0. There are 3 exams 25 questions each, barely studied and got a 95 average. 4.0 is considered 90%+. She's very sweet and will help you whenever you need help. Highly recommend. Her grading scale makes it very passable. ( lowest of the 6 quizzes dropped and higher final grade replaces lowest exam.
If you try you can easily 4.0 her class. Really not helpful if you ask questions though.
She focuses on using PowerPoints rather than hands on work. She puts everything online so class isn't mandatory. She isn't a great teacher as she doesn't help with a lot of things and doesn't focus on showing very many problems.
She's rude and gross but she's not that hard. Her math questions on her exam are easy but some of the concept ones were really random and hard. Also, her final was soooo hard and not like any of her other exams. She's overall okay.
All I can say is that when I stopped going to class I did better. Rude during office hours. Slides are good, if you read mainly off of slides in this class (not 158) then you will get good exam grades. Goes over problems before a quiz so that helps. Book problems are not that much help. SmartWork helps. Has a monotone voice so annoying to listen to
Puts lecture notes online before lecture so can take notes during;study those for exam!practice quizes very much like the exam questions.she always takes/makes time for you during office hours.she gives helpful tips for learning the material.if youre taking chem 158, take her!!
Should go to class so you have the answers to her problems in class from the powerpoint, study from there to figure out the concept questions and should be fine. I suggest taking her I got a 3.7 in the class couldve gotten better but my lab grade hurt me. Overall good class Id take her again.
She is a good lecturer for the most part and explains the material fairly well. However, if you start to fall behind or struggle and go to her for help in office hours, don't bother. She is rude and does not offer encouraging help at all. Other than that the course is still very manageable but severely lacks personable skills.
In the amount of time she spends reprimanding the class, you could've stayed home and taught yourself chemistry. She is rude during class, office hours, and in her emails. Don't bother taking her class if you want to keep a good GPA.
Dr. Hayden is a good professor. I ended up getting a 3.7 out of the class. She was clear and always organized. Gave back everything in a timely manner. Exams and quizzes are good but the concept questions are usually hard and confusing (and they ended up being the only questions I got wrong on exams/quizzes) Recitation is really helpful!
The homework wasn't collected for a grade but a lot of test questions are the same as the homework questions. Lab results were a large part of your of grades but if your careful you'll be fine. test questions come from her powerpoints too. Go to class, and focus in lab, and you'll do fine. she is a little catty but the class is fairly easy.
"Dr." Hayden is incapable of helping a single student learn anything past whats on her slides. She is rude in class and prefers to put students down for their "stupidity" rather than answer questions in class. Dont expect any help from this professor. Homework is moderate but demoralizing considering there is a "Give Up" button. AVOID HAYDEN
You are all on your own in this course. My advice is to use ALL your sources. That being the book, power points, and tests/exams that she hands back to you. This course is NOT an easy A. You need to work hard for her class and you'll do well.
Dr. Hayden made chem very easy to understand, and told us exactly what she expected out of the class from the very beginning. She is very approachable. The tests and quizzes are pretty easy, the only bad part is the tests are only 25 questions. If you study and listen to her in lecture, the class really isn't that bad.
Hayden is a good professor. If you don't understand the topic she's talking about, however, it'll sound like gibberish, and you will end up zoning out or falling asleep like a lot of people in the class. I would read before class to really get a glimpse and understanding beforehand. Not an easy class. One curve-final exam. I got a 4.0; it's doable
She is a very understanding, knowledgeable professor that loves her subject. Took her for analytical and got the highest grade I've ever gotten in a high level chem class. Quizzes and tests are fair and she is also a great lab instructor. Recommended.
Worst professor EVER. Do not take her. Does not understand how to teach and you have to learn from the book. TERRIBLE. Does not curve at all.
I got a 4.0 in CHM157 with Hayden. CHM158 is a little harder, but if you put the work in, you'll do fine. Make sure you pay attention during lectures because I didn't and I struggled because of it. She HATES talking so don't talk during class or she will rip your head off in front of the entire class.
She gives study guides, if you actually do them and know everything on them inside and out you will have no trouble passing the class. I attended every lecture and most of the time I had no idea what was going on. I ended up with a 4.0, relying heavily on the book.
Great professor and fair grader. Really enjoyed this class! Ignore all of the bad ratings on here and just work hard instead! Easy class though.
She is an extremely fair grader and clear on what she puts on the exams. You have to attend class and put effort into all the study tools she gives you. Work hard and you will do well!
Easy lecture show up and listen. She does practice problems which help a lot. There is online homework due every Sunday. 3 tests 6 quizzes. Lectures are boring and long. She is a good teacher for a boring subject. She posted all the notes online and just goes through them so lectures arnt mandatory. She does have practice questions before quizzes
Great chemistry professor. Pay attention in class and do some learning on your own and you should be fine.
Chemistry was my best subject in high school. And taking it with Professor Hayden was torture. Not only does she get happy when only 1 out of 100+ students scores a 100% on a test, her tests or quizzes are nothing like what she teaches us in lecture. She does not answer her emails at all if you have a question.
Hayden was a great professor. Her exams are not easy, but they are not tough either. She made a review for every chapter and also for the final exam. Students who get a bad grade don't utilize what she offers to them. She dropped the lowest quiz score and even a conditional exam score. Great Professor so I'm taking her for Gen Chem II.
She's not a terrible professor, but the lectures are tedious. The notes are all posted online so attendance is not mandatory. Not enough practice problems that are relevant to the exams. Says you don't need to memorize most equationsconstants, then turns around on the final and says you do. Takes forever to post grades. Would not recommend.
Prof Hayden is a great prof. She explains very well in her lectures, she always has examples for you in class that challenge you. Lectures seem long and boring sometimes, but if you actually pay enough attention you can do great in this class. Most of her exams come from the notes. You will only need the book to do practice problems. Great Prof.
You gotta put in a lot of effort but getting a good grade is possible. Talks fast and can be rude. The beginning of the semester was easy but it got hard at the end. Overall, pretty good.
Amazing professor, clear with what she wants. Class exams average were always around 62%, but I would get 95's on all exams. Highly recommend her, anyone going into the Medical field will be benefited by her. She is an MCAT queen. Take her!!!
She's a great professor. The funny thing that she does is the people who get A's on the exams sit up top by her seating chart, and the people who fail are at the bottom. If you notice the people from the bottom to the top its by your exam grades. Great professor, I was always at the top, some friends at the bottom bc they failed lol!!!
Lectures are very helpful, she goes over many practice problems and has you try some on your own. She also highlights main topics to focus on. Quizzes and tests are sometimes tricky because there isn't much room for error. However, she provides a lot of opportunities for you to do well; drops lowest quiz score and replaces lowest test with final.
Great professor! i'm taking for Chem 2 because i loved her so much! Easier exams then other professors that i've seen!
I really liked Professor Hayden. There are 3 exams, 6 quizzes (drops lowest), online homework for every chapter and the final exam. Her exams and quizzes are pretty easy because they are based off of her notes. I used the textbook sometimes. Her practice problems are just like the problems on her exams and quizzes. No tricks! Definitely recommend!
I wish I could take chem 2 with Dr. Hayden also. She is an amazing professor, and her tests are very clear and easy if you pay attention in class and do the practice problems. She curves the final and drops your lowest quiz. The quizzes are VERY easy. I barely used my book because her pp slides had everything that I needed to know. 90% 4.0!
Charlene Hayden is HOT! It made the class easier to handle. Material is tough so work hard from the get go.
Dr. Hayden knows what she's doing but overcomplicates every concept. So if you aren't good at chemistry or math, good luck. She tries to help you but sometimes it's helpful and other times seems condescending. Exams are VERY difficult and she definitely tries to trick you. Many questions are conceptual and tricky if you don't understand the topic.
Dr. Hayden is very confusing most of the time. She overcomplicates things and loses half the class' attention. Not the kindest person in the world, but in no way is she mean either.
She makes a hard class easier with all of the practice problems you do in class and the practice quizzes that she puts up on Moodle. She does put some concept questions which tend to be tricky, but as long as you read through the powerpoints you should be fine and know how to do all of the problems, you will be fine.
Prof Hayden is a very awesome professor, she always over explains how to solve problems and how to do them, this class isn't like chem 1, you only have 3 exams and you have to do amazing on them all to get a 4.0, they are are out of 25 which makes missing 3 questions give you a B on that exam, she does substitute your lowest exam with the final!
It was hard, no doubt about it. Be prepared to spend lots of time and work hard studying for it to get a good grade. You must know concepts inside and out. Notes and lectures can be really confusing at times and she can talk really fast.
Lectures are painful. Exams only out of 25 so not much room for mistakes. Do the book problems and quiz reviews and look over the powerpoints for the conceptual questions. If you study a few days before the exam that should be enough. Ended with a 4.0 after studying for each exam for about 3 days.
Definitely HARDER than CHM 144. More conceptual questions on the exams, so be prepared to read the book inside out. There are 3 exams, so there is no room for messing up. Do not take this class lightly, or you will not pass. If you have the option, I would suggest taking it with another professor.
Her class consists of homework assignments, one extra credit HW at the beginning of the semester, 3 exams, and the final. If you do better on the final than one of your exams, it will replace that exam grade. If you need help, go to her office hours and recitation. Her exams have multiple conceptual questions so make sure to study the notes.
I'm horrible at chem, and I still didn't do very well in this class - but I can honestly say it was no one's fault but my own. Professor Hayden is very honest, and a wonderful teacher. You have to put in work for chemistry, she can't do it for you, but with her help you could get a good grade in this class.
Long, dry lectures and frequent quizzes. Quizzes are 10 points and exams (3 plus the final exam) are only 20 points so there is very little room to make mistakes. Take this course with a different professor if you have the opportunity!
As a student you must do your part to succeed. Chemistry is a hard course period, you must be well prepared for all quizzes and exams. 20 question Exams are on Mondays about once a month, and a 10 question quiz on almost every Thursday. Does her part as an instructor, but does have a bad side and can be a bit rude to students.
Shes amazing. People who complain don't study. she really wants you to do well!
Average teacher but her lectures are extremely boring and that's basically the entire class. The exams were super hard and there is absolutely no room for error. If u skip class don't expect to pass. She can be pretty moody and rude a lot of times. Even if u beg for EC she wont give it. I will not be taking her next semester AT ALL!
I have studied by the book for her class this semester and she is somewhat helpful. At times, I feel as though some of her quizzes and exams contain questions that weren't even related to the notes or textbook. I even tried getting help in her office hours, but only offers the advice "Study harder". Classes feel empty and bored in her lectures.
Dr. Hayden was the best professor I've had this semester. Always willing to help in areas of struggle and provides you with everything you need to pass. Don't skip out on lectures, she gives important info and practice problems that are almost always on exams. She even helps with lab reports if you need extra clarification. Highly recommend! :)
Charlene is an average professor that simply flips through powerpoint slides (that are already posted online anyway and contain all the necessary material for the class), but does not do the best job at answering questions in class. The lectures are extremely boring, but if you study a decent amount you should do fine.
Dr. Hayden is a good professor. She's clear on what you should know, the homework is not hard at all, she drops your lowest quiz(which are not too difficult if you study) and she does practice problems in class, which are really helpful! If you are willing to put the time in for this class, you will do fine.
The first week of class I asked her a question about something I was unfamiliar with and she acted like I was stupid. She is a horrible professor and her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. She does not do anything to keep students interested during the lecture and is extremely boring. Tests and quizzes are extremely difficult.
Dr. Charlene Hayden is an excellent professor. Chem isn't my strong point, but she was so clear-cut on everything you needed to know. Not only did she provide notes, but also countless practice problems and tips. I thought she graded very fairly, and even gave us extra credit and dropped lowest quiz! It's not a blow off, but by far best chem prof
Hayden was a clear prof. She made her grading scale straight forward. Quizes(6) 20% exams(3) 54% final 18% homework 8%. 90% in the class is a 4.0 Her lectures are boring& she makes you feel stupid sometimes. I was yelled at in front of a class of 200 students because I asked the student behind for their notes. You can't talk in her class study hard
Solid professor, but lectures can be hard to follow. Offers an extensive amount of in class exam mimicking practice problems and offers study guides online. 90% and above is a 4.0. Do the work and you'll get your A. If you want to save money the e-book is available in the mastering chemistry software.
Dr. Hayden knows a lot about chemistry. I loved having her. She doesn't surprise you with different topics on tests and quizzes; they're always on what she says they will be on. She loves a silent classroom (and hushes students a lot). Helpful during office hours (I went a couple times). Very straightforward and serious. She was perfect for me.
Althought I didn't do that well in this class, it's because I didn't put the effort in. She has really good powerpoints and give good study guides to the tests and quizzes. That helps a lot when it comes to studying. Overall I would recommend.
Extremely reluctant to answering questions in class, even if multiple students want to know the answer. Powerpoints are super long but printing them for notes is pretty much essential to passing.
Great teacher, as long as you put in the work (read the chapter before lecture and do the practice problems!!!) you'll do fine. She is nice, organized, and concise. She also tries really hard to get everyone to understand the material. Easy A if YOU put in the work. It is Gen Chem 2 so the concepts are hard at times.
Dr. Hayden is a good professor if you put effort into the class. She provides a TON of practice problems which are all helpful for exam. She gives practice exams which contain 100% of exam math problems, other problems are from book reading. Mastering chemistry is used, but only 10 questions and 2 weeks to the finish assignments. Very reasonable.
Her tests are worded so poorly that you can't even understand what she's trying to get you to do. I understood all the information, I got 100% on homework and practice exams and still did piss poor on exams. Would NOT recommend.
Good teacher. Lectures are very long and very boring but they are worth going to! Quizzes and Tests get tricky as she puts all the answers you'll get on it. Has about 20% concept questions per test/quiz and I was always able to get those right.
She was always willing to help. Recitation was the best part since she basically goes over problems that are going to be on the exam. Its not the exact same, but if you understand the gist of it, then you will pass.. Conceptual questions are literally straight out of her PowerPoint. Its okay not to go to class, but definitely recitation!
Dr. Hayden is a great professor. She's always there to help during office hours or in class & does tons of practice problems. It is a very hard class though. Your grade is comprised of three exams, online homework (only 8%), and the final. Her notes are pretty vague so you need to study the book to really understand anything.
Veryunclear during lecture, and condescending to students at times. Refuses to give partial credit or curve exams. Recitation helps, but at least 3 hours a day of studying material are a MUST for a passing grade. If you like rude teachers her class is the one for you.
Her ratings do not do the justice. She is nice and helpful, but if you are completely lost in chemistry and have several other classes alongside this one, dont waste your time. Requires at least 2 hrs of studying everyday. Take this class alongside an easy schedule or else expect to fail. The exams are difficult and account for entire grade.
I took this professor thinking she was good, but SHE'S NOT!!! Her exams are REALLY tough!! Very boring lectures, no curving of the exams. One exam average was 58%, with VERY FEW people who got A's, and she still didn't curve. Studied 4-6 hours each day, STILL DID BAD ON EXAMS. Each exam has 25 Q's, 2 hrs. Final exam had 50 Q's, 2 hrs. Not good prof
Doctor Hayden is great at what she does, but overcomplicates exams and makes them very difficult. You have to put in alot of work for this course to get even a 3.0. There is no extra credit or curves for exams, except your final can replace a lower % exam. Concept question can be really tricky and always 1-2 calculations youve never seen before.
I enjoyed her in class. She is very clear and easy to follow. Her tests are not difficult as long as you do her recommended quizzes and recitation questions. I would def take her again for chemistry. Make sure you read the chapters before you go to class. Do her online hw , it helps sometimes. I also recommend finding practice tests online.
Chemistry is a hard class, and takes a lot of studying. But this professor is extremely fair and straight forward. Her practice problems help so much. Read the book and definitely go through the powerpoints before every exam. It's obvious that she cares about students and really wants them to succeed. Go to class, go to recitation, study.
this class is very difficult. Hayden is completely fair and straightforward with her exams. She goes over everything in class, recitation, and he practice quizzes. I got high B's to high A averages on the exam. For the final I just studied the old exams, practice exams, and power points and was able to replace my lowest grade so that helped alot
I had Hayden for chm144 and I had a 3.1 but chm145 was horrid. Her lectures were insanely boring and she is so rude and treats you like a child. Her final was impossible even though I read the book, practice problems, and studied old exams I still failed. She doesn't curve or give partial credit and tricks you on exams. It's a hard class overall.
Dr. Hayden is wonderful. Chm 145 is a problem based course requiring a great deal of homework on your own time. She's a completely reasonable teacher. Very fair grader. Walks through problems step by step in class. This is the usual 20 chemistry question test where if you get more than 2 wrong you are below 90%.
She reminds me very much of a high school teacher who hates her job. She makes seating charts for tests like we're 12. She does not do a good job of explaining concepts. If one person understands something that's good enough for her.
Makes students sign a wavier stating that she has the right to mark their answers wrong on a test even though the machine correctly scored the answer correct. The student is supposed to write "I guessed" and provide explanation why they chose that answer. If the machine scored it correct and she claimed that you did not provide logic, its wrong.
The exams are written by her and they are very tricky and extremely difficult. Most importantly, they are nothing like the practice samples she gives in her Power Points.
Dr. Hayden is the best Chem professor at OU. Very clear and straightforward in her lectures. Just follow along! She wants her students to succeed and even gives studying advice for passing her class. Her grading system is fair too. She's got industry experience too so she really knows what she's talking about.
She's awful. She acts like we're a bunch of elementary schoolers - she makes seating charts, stands and crosses her arms when anyone in the 200 person lecture hall is talking. Her lectures are mind-numbingly boring and she focuses on things that aren't even on the exam while glossing over the things that are. Stopped going and still got a B.
Prof Hayden seemed to be surprised when the exam averages were repeatedly in the upper 50's. Although, every time ONE or TWO people would come close to 100% so there would be no curve. I can't say the lecture was completely from the slides because she rambles, but her rambling can be on the exam! The "reviews" are all but helpful.
Dr. Hayden was a very nice and intelligent person, but a horrible educator. Unbelievably broad on topics within lectures that put you to sleep. Seemed more of a distributor of work more than anything else. The material itself isn't the easiest as well so that adds to the difficulty as well. Overall, definitely not someone i'll take again.
She was willing to help during lecture and office hours. If you print out her powerpoints then you'll be good with her lectures and tests. The exams directly correlate with her powerpoint slides on moodle. You have to put in the time to get good exam scores but is very good at explanations. Homework amount is minimum
I really liked Hayden as a professor, but I can see why others may have a harder time in her classes. If you understand the concepts fairly easily and put in a little bit of effort outside of class, you will do just fine. She has powerpoint notes that she explains during class. Definitely show up she has practice problems all the time!
She spends hours working on one single example problem because she thinks people are still working on it. Only way to study for exams is to find someone who has taken her and can give you old exam. She doesn't use any examples from class on tests. Lectures VERY boring. Bring coffee. She assigns seats for tests like middle school.
I can't decide how I feel about Charlene. Though many people say her tests are too hard (they are hard), I feel it's the curriculum itself that is difficult and not necessarily the tests. However, she does try pretty hard (a little too hard) to include trick answers, and often the graphs and concepts she includes are can be a little "out there".
Dr. Hayden is brilliant in Chemistry, but certainly struggles when it comes to teaching it. I highly recommend showing up to every lecture, although they are absolutely boring. Because anything she says during class is fair game for the exam. Her exams are never curved and three missed questions already bumps you down to a B.
Chemistry is a hard subject but she made it bearable. She does lots practice problems in class and posts her lecture notes online so you can follow along in lecture, which is boring but definitely go if you want to succeed. Hayden cares about her students and will help you. She curved the final which was great. She is your best bet for gen chem 2.
Dr. Hayden dedicates recitation time for extra practice problems, which is SUPER useful. Attend class, go to recitation, and TRY to pay attention during lecture periods (they can be a little bland...) you will do just fine. Exams are conceptual question heavy, so study lecture material and pay attention to what she stresses in class!
Honestly, her tests are the hardest! She gives you practice examples that are much easier than what she actually gives on her exams. I retook this class with another professor, and it was probably the best decision of my life.
Dr. Hayden was an amazing teacher! Her lectures are a bit long, but the way she taught the mathematical way to solve questions was phenomenal because she was very thorough. She also provides you with practice quizzes and questions that help before tests that consisted of 25 questions.
Most boring teacher you can have but teaches the material as is, she really know chem well but does not do a good job teaching the material, her recitations and practice problems do help but you have to pay close attention. Pay close attention because she will include trick questions a lot which can hurt your grade. Also ask people to quiet down.
Please, if you're NOT a hardcore, lover of chemistry do NOT take Ms. Hayden's class. The lectures are long and monotonous and consist of going through endless amounts of powerpoint slides. I'm not trying to degrade the prof, she's very intelligent and tries to help, but her teaching skills are poor and it definitely reflects on the exam scores.
If you have Dr. Hayden, DON'T skip lectures. They're very important for your success in the class. Her exams are kind of challenging because they're only 25 questions and getting a few wrong brings your grade down a lot. Study her review questions and you should do fine
Hayden is definitely a difficult professor. It isn't her fault though, chemistry is just a hard class. If you follow her PowerPoint in class and do the chapter reviews and the online homework and practice problems she gives you, and study for the quizzes and exams you will do fine.
I feel she did the best she could do to work with her students. Chem is a hard class to teach and learn. I dont have any complaints about her, yet the class itself is rough because chemistry is not my best subject.
I liked Hayden and am taking her next semester for Chem 2. Just listen in class and she explains everything clearly. She is strict on talking in class, but all around I liked her and thought she taught well.
Were you planning on taking Hayden because you saw another professor with a lower rating? Here's some advice, take the other professor. Unless you have the time to dedicate 14+ hours a week of studying for this class she's not worth it. At least the other class provides extra credit. This was an unforgiving class and made me dislike chem.
Not horrible as people say she was!. her exams/quizzes are fair!! why take a class like this you're not gonna study??!?! also, it's mandatory to have basic algebra skills! I'm not good at chem but I took time to do the "optional" textbook problems in addition to the online hw. helped. look over the ch. review sheets :)
Does a great job of explaining. Really cares about all students doing well. Great slides and we'll laid out plan to help you study and practice to do well in the class. If you follow all the hw, practice problems, quizzes, and reading, you'll do great on the exams.
Her class made me loathe chemistry. I had to take this class as a prerequisite for mechanical engineering, and towards the middle of the semester, I just stopped trying. Her exams and quizzes were really difficult. She may be a good professor for chemistry majors, but not for someone who won't use chemistry ever again. Like me.
I've always been an A student, and realistic. However, even when I applied myself to the best level possible, I failed the course. I studied day and night, and had a few tutors but none of it matters when you take her exams (heavily graded) and quizzes. Most difficult course I've ever taken, and have to retake it now at OCC with someone new. RIP.
Chem is going to be a difficult subject no matter who teaches it. Hayden tries her best to teach the topics in a way she thinks will help, but sometimes she makes easy topics confusing. But, if you study her powerpoints and do her practice quizzes you will be fine. Ask her questions and show you have a desire to learn and she will help you.
If anyone needs to take chem 1 and 2 take it with hayden. she is ur best bet one hundred percent. All you need to pass is her old quizzes and exams from your friends who took her before. she does not change anything except for some numbers. The ACS for chem 1 is a brutal and you will fail but for chem 2 she writes her own final and its super easy.
This was the worst class I have ever taken, I don't think I learned a single thing from her or her lectures... the only way to pass this class is if you have someone's old exams, otherwise don't bother taking her. It was hard to learn something when someone can't teach.
Hayden is by far the worst professor I've ever had. I got a 4.0 in Chem 104 last year and I just failed Gen Chem 2 (1450 ) with her. Her lectures are boring and your grade is only 8% online homework and the rest is the 4 exams. No quizzes. She is very rude and does not care about her students or if they are doing well.
Expects you to get 100% on exams and is not lenient at all. Exams are 25 MC questions worth 4 points each. Basically, if you get only a few wrong, you dont get a good grade. This class is not a test of my intelligence or what I know, but instead is trying to interpret what she wants. She is not approachable and does not respond well to questions.
Hayden is honestly a great professor. Show up to every lecture and actively listen. Also, understanding the in class problems are so helpful to doing well. I am in her class now and have received a 100% on the first exam and a 98% average on the first 3 quizzes. All you have to do is listen in class and know every detail of her powerpoints to pass.
Worst professor I have encountered at Oakland University. She is very rude to students during lecture. Exams are tricky and never straightforward. Would not recommend her.
IF you have to take chemistry at OU, take it with Hayden. She gives you everything you need to get a 100%. Know her powerpoint slides, do the electronic homework, and do the review she gives you for each chapter. A lot of people complain about her, but it's probably because they don't put in the work. I study 2 hours before each test and get 100s.
Chem at OU is a tough class to get through but Prof. Hayden really does a good job with the class. She does tons of practice problems before exams and quizzes, posts reviews, and lecture slides before the class. I recommend her over any other chem professor as she does care about her students. Its about what you put into the class!
To be honest I know I have to retake the course. Chemistry is not a note looking and your fine course. You have to practice for your concept. The only complaint I had about her is that she will put out tricky questions ( even though it related to the content) on her test and quizzes. She will even say that she will make it tricky to make you think.
Class is based on 4 quizzes, 3 tests + final (18% each), and online stuff (10%). She is a good lecturer, but she can be sorta rude and strict. She also puts a couple tricky questions on each test. She helps a LOT at office hours though. A lot of work, but the class is pretty fair for what it is. The final had a 5 question curve, so it was easy.
She was a knowledgeable teacher but make sure that if you come to lecture that you pay attention, especially if you are going to ask a question. if you ask about something she already explained, she usually gets really mad and sassy about it. Overall her tests are pretty fair, but there's no curves or anything until the final.
She is honestly a fine professor. Just show up to lecture and follow along. It isn't that hard.
DO NOT TAKE HER. I passed Chem 1 with a 4.0 and then I come to take her class and everything is about her exams. 80% of the class is exams. Her exams are no where close to anything we learn. We had to teach ourselves the material. Everything she does on the board is not explained either so good luck. You have to guess how she got it.
she seems kind of scary at first, but shes a super sweet lady and so passionate about chemistry. personally this attribute helped me a lot because shes very good at explaining things and is good at answering student questions. the homework she gives is not too bad and its very helpful!
Shes very smart but cannot teach at all. Just took the final and it wasnt nothing like her previous exams. If you can, take someone else wholl help you learn it
Probably the worst professor I ever had. Tests are very hard and nothing like practice problems she gives in class. Her final was absolutely nothing like her old exams and her review did not help at all. Take anyone but her!
Lectures go super fast but it helps to read the material before. Super approachable and nice when answering qs, responds quick to emails. Practice quizzes help a lot w exams so always use those! Final was more concept based (time limit) but reviewing old exams + practice quizzes rly helped. If you put in the work you'll see results
The class is mostly based on 4 tests. As long as you regularly go to class and do practice problems outside of class, the tests won't have many surprises. Some of the concept questions on them were sorta unfair though. This class is just tough, but Dr. Hayden is a good instructor and is very accessible, making her one of the better choices.
She's nice overall and good at explaining the material. Read all the notes, recognize the trends on the graphs, and study the practice problems to do well in the class. There are participation points so go to class if you care. I didn't use the books but she does assign extra practice problems from it.
Charlene is amazing! As long as you go to class and practice you will get an A. Just make sure to go to her office hours if youre confused because it will help so much! Exams are everything from class so PRACTICE is key!!
This is the worst professor I have ever taken. Her tests and quizzes are difficult and unclear, not ever on material that was covered in class. Lectures are okay but the material is not ever used on the exams. Worst professor ever!!!! avoid!!!!
Her lectures make you feel as if you get the material very well, but once it comes to the quizzes and tests you feel like you know nothing. I do not recommend taking this class with her at all but if you do, dont take it with any other heavy workload classes because you need a lot of time in order to get an A on her exams.
Professor Hayden was nice at first but her lecture is very dry and it was hard to stay engaged in the class. She was nice enough but for a general chemistry class, the exams were too hard.
Not the class for you if you already struggle with Chemistry. Professor doesnt care if you understand lecture material and would rather move on. Exams were polar opposites of material learned in class, exams are 75% of grade. Professor expects you to understand all material after going over it for 5 minutes. Would not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR: 1) Goes through slides very fast 2) Practice problems are useless 3) There's barely any preparation for exams 4) Study guides are extensive but tests are only 20 questions 5) Recitation is just extended lecture which it shouldn't be used for 6) Not available for help.
Horrendous. Must get a 50% exam avg to even pass which is beyond unfair when she barely prepares you for her poorly made exams. She genuinely gets proud about a 60% class avg for exams. Avoid NO MATTER WHAT. You will hate her.
She is absolutely infuriating. Her exams are nothing like the practice and the final was the ACS which was even worse than her exams. Downright unfair class, especially since you auto fail without a 50% exam average. If you dont know math, she wont even TRY to help you. AVOID!!!!
Professor Hayden is the worst chemistry teacher I have ever encountered. She is unreliable for extra help. She is the reason I changed majors. Her exams are the complete opposite of what we learn in class, no matter how hard you study. It takes a 50% exam average to be able to pass her class. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
She treats her students like high schoolers, but holds them to the standard of med students. Downright unfair and useless class, she does NOT care if you are struggling - I went to her for help twice and got thrown out because I didn't know math as well as the rest of the students. 50% exam average is required, and final was the ACS. AVOID!!!!!
do yourself a favor and take literally anyone else. she has gained the nickname of "worst chem prof at ou" for a reason. doesnt care about you
Ill start off by saying, shes bad. Other reviews mention how she is the worst professor at OU, by no means is she good, however students have way higher grades than other Chem professors have for this class. Her exams are short, and she wont prepare you well. Your best chance is to go to tutoring center for help.
Respectable professor. A lot of people complain, but that is because the class is a hard one. You have to read, come to class, and do the homework to do well. You have to be reasonably proficient at mental math, especially because the final is the ACS. She is very strict and there is no extra credit other than doing well on final to replace a test.
only showed up on exam days and managed to get a C. shes not as bad as everyone says, if you actually try you could probably manage to get an A
Plain awful - do not take. The people who say she is fine are likely already naturally gifted at chem/former AP chem students that had a decent teacher before. You will suffer in her class if you are new to chem/bad at math.
I am naturally not gifted in chem, as I really need to work for a good grade. Her powerpoints made it easy to study and her study tips were great. Her reviews in class were very helpful as well. She is definately one of the better professors at OU as I have heard of some bad ones. To do well in this class, study every day and go to her office hours
she does in class polling questions and you get extra points towards prep quizzes on moodle to help your grade. you have online HW due almost every week and a fairly easy quiz after each chapter if you pay attention. The class is hard itself so you have to work. Do book practice problems. 4 exams, last one is cumulative and will replace your lowest
Very easy to be bored by lectures. Very knowledgeable but wasnt great at relaying the information through her teaching
She's the best gen chem 2 teacher at Oakland University no doubt. She's very intelligent and knows what she's talking about. The practice problems keep the class engaged and are easy points. Take her!!!:D
Easily the worst professor in my college career. She is rude, takes too much time out of class to call out students, and her exams are rarely based on the material actually covered in class. Her teaching style is terrible, and does an awful job going over in class problems. Makes you feel dumb for asking questions. Do not take!!!! She will fail you
Dr Hayden is great! Her class is hard, but she gives you all the resources you need to do well. If you have to take gen chem 2, I recommend taking it with her.
She's is a nice-ish prof but if you have any questions on a topic, be ready to be belittled in front of the entire lecture. She only explains things one way and if you don't understand, well, good luck. Definitely go to the tutoring center and DO NOT SKIP CLASS. I worked hard in this class and still didn't do great.
Quite disappointed in prof Hayden's inability to accept her own fault's as a professor. A 50% average on exams seems impossible for those of us who struggle with chemistry. It is hurtful that her standards are up to those of med students to us that are not even taking the MCAT. Avoid unless you're naturally gifted at Chem.
Due to the pandemic, the class had to be switched online. As if in-class lecture with her wasnt hard enough, she has no sympathy to adjust the coursework. Tests are now time-limited and you couldnt skip questions. No EC that would really help your overall grade. Even before the transition, ave exam scores were in the 60s. No remorse or care.
If you have the chance to take this class with another professor, do so. Dr. Hayden is very inconsiderate and she does not want her students to do well. She barely lectures and she is a tough grader. I would never take a class with her again.
If you are going to have to take chemistry online, do not take it with Professor Hayden. Due to the CoVid pandemic, we had to switch over to online. She set strict restrictions on her exam which set the class up for failure. 1st online exam average was a 62%.
She is very organized and her notes/practice problems help a lot. She is good at helping you understand the material but her exams are HARD. She doesn't curve and thinks because 2 out of 400 students get 100% everyone should be able to get 100% no questions asked. But all chemistry is hard and she teaches well, just don't expect an easy A.
Prof Hayden does her best to help us succeed! You have to put in a lot of time to do well- definitely read the book. Take advantage of the textbook review problems and practice quizzes on Moodle- VERY similar to her exams. She grades fairly, has us do practice questions in class to keep us engaged, and gives us time to ask questions. Good prof!
I took Dr. Hayden's class for Gen Chem 1 and Gen Chem 2. She makes it clear what is expected of us and is very helpful in answering questions. Make sure you understand the review question provided in the textbook and you will do fine on the exam! Content questions can be challenging, but notecards help for sure. The exams and grading are fair.
Professor Hayden is a good professor to take for Chem 2 but I do not recommend taking her Chem 2 class if you took Chem 1 with Prof. Seeley. She is not as easy. You really need to work for your grade in this class. I recommend really focusing on testing yourself with the practice quizzes she posts for every chapter and attending lecture!
she is probably one of the worst professors i've ever had. Duringt his trying time she showed no sympathy for the students who had to essentially teach themselves everything. She shortened the time for tests and quizzes. You need at least a 50% average on the exams or you fail the class regardless of your other scores. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HER.
Professor Hayden is a hard teacher but this class is manageable. Focus on the practice problems she provides for the calculations in the exam. Make sure to know every word of the powerpoints for the concept questions. You need like a week for each exam to study and do well. She's not as bad as others make her seem. But, Seeley is definitely better.
If you are really good at chemistry, then sure, I'd recommend her--especially when she favors those students who do extremely well in terms of expectations. I found that her online hw was useless in preparing for the exam. I did ALL the hw, online and the book and I got a 40% on the first exam. Just take it with a better professor.
Im gonna say, If you like Chemistry, take Hayden. She was my favorite Gen Chem prof I had. In Class lectures where fine, She gives Prep quizzes before each chapter which are always super easy points. When the class went online, (COVID) I began to not like her as much, She seemed more unfair, but thats just my opinion. Take her if its in-person!
Anyone who says she is fine to take is either already great at chem, or is one of her favorites that she plays of students who are already succeeding. She is, by a significant margin, the worst educator I've ever come across - as someone who is not naturally gifted at academics, if you're like me, don't go near her - virus or not.
Class was labeled as synchronous, but lectures were posted online. Only had to attend synchronous sections if you wanted to ask questions. Never used the book, learned enough from her lectures/practice problems. Weekly homework online, and weekly group assignments which were easy. Study practice problems, homework, and quizzes for exams!
I would 100% recommend Professor Hayden to anyone, she truly cares about students understanding the information instead of them just passing the class. She had office hours almost every day, and she never belittled students asking questions. Great professor for an intro class. Her tests are difficult only because there are so few questions on them.
This entire class was online due to Covid, yet professor Hayden had no sympathy for anyones situation. Besides the group work that helped no one, she would belittle students asking about their own grades, refuse to answer questions about exams, and would say that her students should do better rather than take criticism. Steer clear of her.
I really had to work hard for a B+! (JR. w/ 3.7 GPA) If ur good at chem, she's great. If not, get tutoring now! Pre-recorded lectures very difficult to ask questions. Trick questions. Generous curve/XC saved me. Nice lady, but always wants u to go to office hrs to get questions answered. Likely better if taught in person!! VERY time consuming!!
This is definitely a class where hard work is necessary, but the professor is available to assist. The textbook and other resources like YouTube are great for additional help.
Professor Hayden is an excellent professor! Chemistry is a difficult course itself, but Professor Hayden was clear with her course structure, and really enabled her students to be successful as long as they put in the work. She is also very kind and helpful towards students struggling. I highly recommend taking her if you have to take chemistry.
Professor Hayden doesn't do so well teaching online classes. She expects more than what is taught from her students. As a student, you could attend to every video call or not show up to any at all and you will probably have the same result on your grade. The best advice I can give to an incoming student is to watch every audio lecture provided.
very stern but solid professor. she genuinely cares about your grade -- as long as you care about it, too. read the material before class or else you'll be lost
Professor Hayden was a great professor. Her exams were what she had on the quizzes and offered extra credit as well. Class was challenging but If you put the time and effort to study and watch her lectures you will do well! I recommend her for chemistry, she was also really nice and welcoming If you have questions.
Whatever you do, dont take Dr. Hayden, especially if the course is going to be online. She makes the lectures extra credit but you might as well not go because it doesnt do anything! She writes all her own exam questions which are nothing like the pointless homework she gives. No curve and no consideration for anything. Basically on your own.
Even though my grade wasn't exactly awesome in her class, it was mostly due to Professor Hayden's ability to explain difficult concepts in the mandatory lecture time that saved my grade. I started to evolve my thinking in the class and her teaching style was the best of any professor I have had thus far.
I took chem many times and failed. I never took gen chem #1 in high school. People can say what they want about hayden. Yeah she may come across as the type to say "drop the class". However, if you show up to every office hr. If you are willing to put in the work. Watch organic chemistry tutor. Grind, Grind, Grind. She will care for you and help!
I had Hayden for online classes during COVID mandates, zoom meetings were not mandatory and she prerecorded her lectures and posted them. class was very formula and practice heavy. I had a difficult time even with major prior knowledge. She also offered extra credit on exams that everyone failed. 4/10 overall. would not take again
I DO NOT recommend this professor at all. Lectures have nothing to do with the homework and both have nothing to do with the test and quizzes. VERY VERY hard class. She gives tons of homework, tests and quizzes every week. Her tests are full of math problems and she only gives 30 mins which will make you guess and end up getting an F. NOT GOOD.
Do yourself a favor and do not register with her. Her tests are very difficult and she gives many of them. I spend hours doing her homework and it does not even relate to the quiz or test. Take anyone else on the list but not her. I study so hard and always end up getting an F no matter what. Please dont take her. Hardest class I have ever taken!
I have never seen something hard like this class! My advice to those people who are reading DONT even thing to take this class with professor Hayden, you will honestly hate the whole college. Lectures are nothing like homework and homework is nothing like tests. I feel like her Exams are from the other side of the world. WORST WORST
Professor Hayden was a good fair professor. Sometimes there were things I didnt understand but drop in tutoring helped very much. Go to her office hours, she is a nice lady! Her exams were fairly easy you just have to understand the main concept and youll do very well!
Dr. Hayden is a great professor who really knows the material and teaches it super well. The practice problems we do during recitation as well as the lecture practice problems are so helpful cuz she goes through every one step-by-step. I took her last semester and am currently taking her for Gen chem 2 :)
Yes, you have to put in the work and study, just like most other college-level classes. However, she gives extra credit and many opportunities to ask for help if you need it. Not sure why everyone is freaking out about her. She was rather approachable and understanding of questions. Put in the work and you'll do fine.
The other profs aren't much better. Either way, you're done for...
Solid professor, I don’t know why her reviews are low. She is caring, and approachable after lectures, and she gives participation points to boost your grade
I have never received less than an A in any class until this one. Her lectures are monotone, and she lacks any charisma in getting you to understand the material. I actually watched Chads Prep instead of her lectures for the last half of the semester and noticed I did better. She marks things wrong that are right; awful experience never again
At the beginning of the semester when we were online, the recorded lectures weren't helpful for me. When we went back in-person, the lectures were much more helpful. Also, there is usually attendance extra credit. She can sometimes be a little sassy if you ask a question. If you work hard and study for each quiz/exam this class won't be too hard.
AVOID!! She will fail you if you don't do well on any of the exams from 3 exams. Her questions are from nowheere in the book. Her tests involve lots of long math and she provides only 4 mins for math questions that literally takes 10-15 mins to do. She hurts grade by not giving you enough time for quizzes and exams. Hard quizzes and exams!!!
I took her for CHM 1 & 2 and I would tell you to AVOID her! Very tough class no matter how long you spend studying.
She does not teach well. Material covered in class sometimes differs from exam questions. You must be good at taking fast timed math questions or else you will not succeed.
I don't really understand the bad reviews since I didn't think she was that bad. She gives good lectures, recommends textbook problems. Now this is a pretty hard class, so you will have to spend at least an hour everyday studying and doing problems. I felt that some of the questions on the exams/ quizzes were difficult or never really talked about.
Tests are timed and not enough time is allotted for the lengthy calculations that need to be done. She told the lecture hall that, "If I haven't tricked you with a wrong answer then I'm not doing my job." Silly me, I thought her job was to teach chemistry. Not approachable, and rather condescending.
Good professor, terrible class structure. If you don't do the exam problems fast and flawlessly on the first try you will not have enough time to finish the entire exam. Other than exams/quizzes being criminally time restricted, homework, lectures and other assignments were normal.
Horrible instructor and the way she has decided to structure the class is unbelievable. If you have questions about something she has taught during the lecture welp good luck as she will completely avoid the question. Do not take her if avoidable.
terrible class structure
She was not approachable and was rather rude towards students asking simple questions. Her lectures can easily be confusing, and she would skim through examples instead of showing us how to work out them problem. She also deliberately tries to trick you on quizzes and exams. Whatever you do, avoid her at all costs!!
The lectures weren't very great, she just read powerpoint slides that were on moodle. However, she makes it so that the lowest quiz and exam grade doesn't count towards your final grade. While lectures weren't required she did give extra credit on something called learning catalytics if you do go to lecture. The class itself was very difficult.
Strives off of making students lives harder. No study guides or reference on what will be on the test or quiz so good luck. Avoids questions. Lots of questions on tests and quizzes come from literally out of no where test average usually around 60-70%. Only gets a 2/5 because extra credit, but only goes to your homework grade which is 14% of grade
Very challenging class, lectures are long and very easy to get sidetracked as all she does is read powerpoints for each chapter. Tests, quizzes are filled with oddly worded and confusing questions and when you attempt to ask questions she will respond in a rude demeanor. I do not recommend this teacher.
She is not a very approachable person and has a rude attitude when you ask a question. I needed to rewatch the lecture powerpoints uploaded to fully understand what was going on.
She is an okay professor, but is often very hot and cold when it comes to her demeanor. She often seemed very mad at you if you didn't understand something. Many of her exam "conceptual" questions are highly specific and come out of nowhere. She wasn't a bad professor at all, but it was just very hard to approach her.
Never got a 100% on anything because of 1-2 bizarre questions on the quizzes/tests. When answering a question in class, she made you feel really stupid for even asking it. A good note is that 1 quiz and 1 exam is dropped. At 3/4ths into the semester I stopped taking notes because we were going so fast, and a lot of time was spent self-learning.
Trying to trick you with test answers by having possible solutions as answers. You will not get credit for the test questions unless you show all work, even if it is correct. All self learning. Makes you feel dumb.
She was very unapproachable and when students asked questions during class she frequently had snarky remarks. You will end up having to teach the material to yourself. She times quizzes and exams. I would not recommend her to anyone.
Exams and quizzes are difficult conceptual questions always tricky to answer, timed quizzes, and always run out of time.
When asking questions, she makes students feel stupid for asking and would discuss at times her personal world views. Class is test-heavy, and online quizzes are timed, once you answer the question you cannot go back. Her exams are mostly from her PowerPoint and always have 1-2 questions that make no sense that require 'out-of-box' thinking
Her conceptual questions come out of no where even if you study her slides. practice calculations but she does a bunch of inverse situations to trick you. quizzes are online but still hard with only 30 mins to take.
This class needs a lot of work, we had a quiz or exam almost every week of the semester. The quiz & exam Qs are taken directly from Professor Hayden's powerpoints so study & memorize those well. Conceptual Qs can be random but still from her powerpoints. Offers extra credit. Doable class but needs time and studying. Definitely do the practice Qs.
Avoid her at all costs
Miserable woman who thrives off of making students feel bad. She knows what she is talking about but if you have questions in class keep them to yourself unless you want to be put down. Rude to students and has a greater than God attitude. Avoid this class if you care about your wellbeing. If you must take it keep your head down you should be fine.
honestly wants you to fail. I started skipping lectures and did them at home which boosted my grade from 60s to 90s on the quizzes. Her lectures are a joke and sitting in class trying to actually comprehend is more difficult. do the lectures yourself and pray is all I can say.
Professor was alright but class was extremely hard. I studied, went to tutoring, and went to office hours and still received a C- because exams were a lot different than what we expected. Lectures were horrible and confusing, I learned better at home.
This class is awful, the lectures are so confusing you are better off teaching yourself at home. The tests quizzes are set up to trick you, she even said her job was to trick us on tests. Better off not taking her if you want a good gpa.
I tried posting a bad review and it wouldn't let me post it, but once I changed the rating to 5, it's totally ok. Suspicious. Now it's not letting me edit my review to my original bad one, so I'll just say she's not a good teacher.
I'm very surprised by all of the bad reviews of this professor; she is very thorough in her teaching given the 2-3hr time slots for her lectures, and she's actually a nice lady. The only times she got frustrated were when ppl couldn't follow simple instructions which I'd say is understandable, however the class itself is quite challenging as it is.
If you don't get an average of 50% on all of your exams regardless of your grade in her class she will fail you. She thinks her exams are "straightforward" but they are very tricky. She says it's her job to fail us and is rude when you ask her a question. You are better off learning at home my grades went up when I taught myself
I don't understand the hate towards Dr. Hayden she was a nice teacher who got to know her students if they tried. Although some of her quizzes had these out of the box thinking conceptual questions that made little sense unless you were a chem expert. But gives extra credit for attendance and makes all her quizzes directly from her PowerPoints.
While Dr. Hayden's class was fast-paced and heavily memorization-based, I did not find the quizzes and tests unbearable as she provided multiple ways to learn content including online homework, textbook review, recitation, and office hours. This class is not suited for students with little to no prior knowledge of chemistry.
This class was one of the hardest classes I have ever had to take. This professor was very rude to me with every interaction. I never wanted to ask any questions because she would always say something smart back and make me feel stupid. I stopped going to the lectures and ended up doing better in the class. Lectures are boring and not useful.
Prof Hayden could be a rude lady and a cranky attitude but not a bad professor. I understood chemistry much better while attending her class. Online quizzes are difficult and fast-paced until you get the hang of it. Understand all of the homework and quiz questions and you will do great. Attendance earns you easy extra credit. I would recommend.
Hayden is an awful professor Lectures are pointless, even the extra credit assignments can be completed remotely without any meaningful in person engagement. The loss of a family member prompted me to request extra time to complete a quiz. the response from Dr. Hayden was shockingly unsympathetic. Avoid her classes. Negative reviews are accurate.
Dr. Hayden catches a lot of heat because she teaches a hard class, but she is not a bad professor. If you show up to all of the lectures and do all of the review she tells you to do you will be fine. Almost all math based questions on quizzes and exams are derived from a homework, chapter review, or practice problem sheets.
Not terrible but not great. Seems very snappy towards people in lectures, and the conceptual questions on quizzes and tests seem like they are meant to cause confusion.
I am so tired of the Charlene slander, she is an amazing professor who happens to teach a hard subject. While attendance wasn't mandatory, her lectures included helpful practice problems and you got extra credit points for showing up. Her tests are hard because chemistry is hard. I love that woman so much I would literally take a bullet for her.
Prof. Hayden is a good chem prof. but acts quite snappy to students asking questions or if she sees students being evidently distracted. However, the grading criteria is quite lenient. Self-studying is required to succeed. Prof. provides useful materials for exam. Online quizzes are hard and sequential. I'd take over most OU chem professors.
Hayden I felt didn't teach me at all, it was more the slides that did the heavy lifting. Most quiz/exam questions are based on the slides/practice problems, PLEASE revisit those. I would have tea with her, but a chem class? Not really. I got away with an A grade after two 56% grades on the first two exams though, so the grade recoverability is nice
Great lady! Sets you up for success as long as you put in the work. Go to office hours, come prepared with specific questions. Quizzes are very fair, exams have lots of notice for you to start studying. Tips: she hates when people talk while she's lecturing, do every problem in the chapter review before quizzes don't skip around.
Doctor Hayden was incredible. Lectures were incredibly helpful and I always left the knowing more than I came in with. Quiz questions were simplified/easier versions of the homework and notes. Cares very much about student success! Make sure you study outside of class though/
I LOVED Professor Hayden. I am not sure why she has so many bad reviews. Her lectures were clear and concise. I never felt so confident in Chemistry. She has a noticeable passion for this subject. I always knew what would be on the exam or quizzes. Take her for Gen Chem!!
Lectures are a bit slow but Dr. Hayden makes sure you do enough practice problems during class. Her exams and quizzes are heavily based of her notes (to the point where you don't even have to open the textbook). She is very accessible and helpful during office hours. Study hard and you'll do very well in the class!
First day of class she tells everyone to drop out if they have no prior knowledge of Chem. Has no regard for how students feel, lectures are dry, and she purposefully tricks you on tests. I do have prior knowledge of chem and done well, but her quizzes were made to confuse you. She does not care about your learning. Study lecture slides.
boring but grading is good and she posts online lectures which are very helpful if you miss class or just want to go back and review
Good teacher, just a hard class to teach. I don't know if I've seen any chem teacher with a good rating, and really I believe its because its a difficult subject to understand, not because the teacher themselves is not good at teaching. She is very understanding and knows her stuff. I didn't take chem for 4 years and managed to pass with an A-.
Dr. Hayden has an attitude like no other. She rolled her eyes at asking simple questions like her job as being a teacher is an inconvenience to her. Her testing environment is terrible with a 30min countdown staring at your face with her squawking at you. Her exams are multiple chapters, yet she only tests on 1/4 of what you actually study.
It's possible to pass without having to attend every class as long as you look through the slides and practice problems. Highly would recommend using past quizzes to study for any compatible exam. She grades quizzes and exam generally quick. The final covers every chapter.
Dr. Hayden would be an amazing professor for a higher level chem class, but not intro. The order in which she teaches the topics makes it very confusing. In class, she only focuses on the math aspects of the topics but then will test you on non-mathematical concepts. If you already have a background in chem you should be ok.
Dr Hayden was a good professor, but the class was extremely difficult. You have to be prepared to keep up with the material, as it goes by really fast. Quizzes almost every week, but she gives extra credit points for attending class and answering an easy question.
I attended every lecture, passed every homework assignment, and aced every quiz. But not reaching a 50% average on my exams resulted in me failing the course. All that hard work for nothing. Thanks a lot! Warning, don't take her!
She is an extremely rude lady but don't take any other professor. If you go to class, actually pay attention, go over the problems in class, and do the homework you will do just fine. Go over her powerpoints multiple times because half of the questions on quizzes and exams are conceptual from the slides. You get to drop your lowest quiz and hw.
I personally learned better from the book than her, but she has good notes she posts for each chapter. She posts reviews for each chapter about what you should know. She posts practice problems and sends out emails about the details of each quiz. She drops your worst grade for homework and quizzes. Wants her students to succeed, but is fair.
If you attend class, you have the opportunity to earn extra credit by answering an easy question. She posts reviews and practice problems which are helpful to look at. There are audio lectures that are posted in case you don't want to attend class. She always goes over the most missed questions on quizzes and exams. All homework is online.
She's an pretty good professor, good at explaining and going through problems. the lectures take forever but her grading is super fair. Its easy to pass the class. The homework is difficult, I would use her office hours. Overall not horrible.
No reason to get below an A if you study material SHE gives you. ONLY thing you need to look at is the end of chapter review, hw and her slides, WHICH IS ALL GIVEN.nothing on any test is a surprise, they're all exacly what we've seen.Quizes are exactly what we did for hw,Exams are exactly what we did for the quizes, and final is a mix of the exams
If anyone gives Dr. Hayden a bad review, it is simply because this is a difficult class (which is not the professor's fault). She is extremely understanding, caring, and your grade is determined by so much more than exams and quizzes. If you put in the work, you will succeed. Highly recommended.
You didn't have to go to classes but she gave you points of extra credit for each class you went to so I recommend it. The homework was due every Friday, so we had plenty of time to finish it. She was a little off-putting but, in the end, she was decent. I'd recommend her. We had a quiz or exam every week. Exams you could makeup but not quizzes.
She makes the entire class feel dumb for asking questions then after test day basically tells the entire class we are dumb for having an average exam score of 59% Ironically she's still one of the best chem professors at Oakland so that says a lot about the chemistry department. She purposely makes the questions tricky and confusing. Don't take her
SO RUDE. she tries to trick you on the quizzes/exams. I do not understand how the whole chem department is so terrible.
Not mindful of the complexity of certain chapters and assumes that lower grades on a quiz means that "ChatGPT can't solve those types of problems for us". Her online lectures are terrible so make sure you attend class in-person if you want to learn.
Average teacher overall, just make sure you pay attention in lecture and take good notes and you'll be fine. Tests were all multiple choice and not too difficult. She explained all the material pretty well.
Professor Hayden is teaching a hard class. With this being said, she does give a decent amount of resources to study with. She does not put any emphasis on certain concepts from her slideshows and gives random conceptual questions on exams, which are quite tricky. Overall she does not go out of her way to prepare students for tricky topics.
Professor Hayden is teaching a very difficult class, and overall as a teacher she knows what she is doing, she is available if you need extra help, and makes sure we have all the resources we need to succeed. However, she is not a very friendly person. She can be very intimidating, so if you are looking for someone to hold your hand do not take her
Dr. Hayden's class was tough for me at first but she really gives great material to study from. I struggled on all the exams but ended with an A- due to the curve she uses for the final. I used all of my exams and quizzes to study for the final which really helped. Overall she is a good teacher. I did better in Gen Chem 2 than 1 because of her.
Unbelievably rude/defensive when asked a question.Replies in a completely unprofessional manner/shaming kids for not having mastered the material the first day.Doesn't remove questions or curve exam when everyone gets a problem wrong because her "top few students were able to get it right",believes its our fault when over 1/2 class failed her exam.
She is a tough professor. She's great at explaining the material but her tests can be very tough. Every time I asked a question she would belittle me because I didn't understand it. She is always quick to help but gets impatient when you really feel lost. If you want to understand Gen Chem 1 take her but an A isn't going to be easy.
Overall not bad professor. Exams and quizzes can be tough, however if you study the powerpoints and know EXACTLY what they say, you should be fine. Attendance is not mandatory, but there is extra credit for those that show up. Extra credit is applied to HW grade and does actually add up/ help final grade. Would recommend attending office hours.
The professor is extremely strict during quizzes and exams God forbid you lift your head from the paper for one second, she will call you out immediately. She also reacts harshly when students ask questions and often embarrasses them in front of the class. If you prefer a patient or approachable instructor, this may not be the best option.
LISTEN to me pls!! This professor has short temper & rude way of talking to any student if things don't go her way. Like a robot that about to explode. Be ready for timing for exams cuz she gets angry if you slip 1 second late, she uses oldest format for exams, make you take finals in person EVEN if entire school is closed/ the weather is harsh.😬B
My experience with this professor was dreadful at best. Unfortunately I and many of my classmates did not have a good time. This professor is unapproachable if you have questions. The exams were even worse because of her strictness. Overall, this class was dreadful and would not recommend to anyone. Take anyone else.
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! This is the worst professor I've ever had. She is very rude and unapproachable. She always embarrasses students in front of the whole class if they ask a question. After the university closure most professors switched to online exams, while she is making us to drive to school in the middle of a storm to take the exam.
This professor was unprofessional. There were multiple occasions where she would be rude or upset about the class and would say the class is "cheating". First day she stated that her goal is to make you fail and she would try to intimidate you. Her teaching style is very bad and just reads off the powerpoint. Making us drive in bad snow for final.
Professor Hayden was NOT approachable for questions during lectures, but instead humiliated and belittled someone for not immediately knowing a concept we just learned. Refuses to curve an exam just because one of her students may have gotten it right. Instead of an online final, she must "maintain integrity" and make us drive in a snow storm.
Was always polite and approachable. Had a lot of office hours. She isn't afraid to shut down talking and antics during class. She doesn't belittle or humiliate, a lot of the 1 ratings aren't honest and a little too sensitive. She is strict, but if you are here to learn, she is an amazing professor. She will not let you slack off.
DO NOT TAKE HER! She's so rude and impatient with students. She expects you to know everything. She acts so rude and literally scares and pressures students during exam days by yelling and being rude to them. She has favorites and does not treat everyone equally. When someone asks her a question she makes them look stupid infront of everyone.
I wouldn't step foot with a 20 foot pole ever again, she makes your life literally miserable w/ how she does things in and out of the classroom, I would rather jump in front of a bus than lay my eyes on her, her paranoia about cheating is taken to the extreme, her test are impossible to complete with how much work you have to do, SAVE YOUR GPA!
She was Horrible i dont know if this is because its her last year and shes retiring but please save your grade and dont take her she does curve the final but that does no good if u are relying on that only and failed every other exam i suggest please taking a different professor if you care about your grades and mental health she has no empathy!
HORIBBLE! She is unapproachable and is very rude to students when they ask questions. She doesn't consider the fact that students are learning chemistry in 4 months wheras shes been doing this for years, so normally we are gonna take time to grasp the info. 3 wrong answer and your grade drops to an 88%. Save your grade and sanity please.
Oh My God—as someone who is a usual A+ student, this one struck my last nerve. No matter how nice you be, she WILL JUDGE you. Hope she gets hit by a car on her way out. Her behavior is like those women who can annoy & humiliate you in front of others with no misery. Tests & exams are BS* NOTHING like you learn AND is old format(**)worst class. 0/10
This course was challenging for me due to the teaching style, and I often felt confused after lectures. Exams and the final felt more difficult than the material covered, and I relied heavily on extra credit to pass. One positive aspect was that the Moodle page was very organized and easy to navigate.
Only praying will help you pass if you have 0 knowledge on chem prior to taking this class. She is intimidating hard to approach. She will judge you if you ask her questions she doesn't even allow any comfortability. She's very strict. She loves to walk around. She loves to stare during exams, making the pressure even worse. DONT take her!
