Dis dude races thru the slides on the computer in class and thinks we are Superman who can keep up with him. On the good side though, he posts the notes online. He's very intelligent but he does not know how to present material at all. Not very good!
He goes too fast, is boring, and makes me fall asleep every day in class. The best way to learn is to print the notes and reinforce those notes with material from the book
Hes alright, lectures are boring and all he does is read off slides. Hes nice and a pretty cool teacher if u need help. Tests are tricky but if u study ull do good. Good thing he posts notes online cuz i dont go to class. Have a medium A so far.
What a moron. Doesn't know biology and gives impossible tests full of trick questions. I got a 5 on the AP exam in HS and retook it for an easy A, but I have a B now. He can't even answer the questions I have in class about his vague notes, but rather skirts around the problem and keeps going.
iritating Professor. Difficult material which he reads verbatum from slides in such monotone (that you inevitably fall asleep) and at the same time (dont know how its possible) goes to fast for you to write anything down. Well i can see how, since your asleep after he turns down the lights...
His tests are hard and class is boring, I went to class for the first half and did horrible, did about the same for the second half. I studied a lot and still got low C's on the tests.
Pretty good professor. Extremely helpful if you talk with him after class. Just study his notes that he gracefully puts online and you're set. Studying is the key to success. (but that is true in any class)
This man is a professor who points to the projector with a laser pointer and simply reads. He posts the notes online; a plus. I got a 5 on AP exam, so I thought I would take BIO 2 for an easy A, which is now not going to happen. I went to his office hours, and he knows absolutely nothing. . .
just plain crap- he can't teach and also can't answer questions. reads directly off the slides, soooo boring!
Hes an alright teacher. Reads straight off slides from powerpoint but he puts them up online so u dont hafta go to class. Key is to just study everything off the notes since everything is from there. He cant teach much but hes nice and tests were alright.
im not adding anything no one else hasnt said. Boring and tests are damn near impossible. Try getting ANYONE else.
Avoid him if you can. You can pull off a good grade if you study and such. My problem with him was not the difficulty of the course. It was his COMPLETE LACK of caring about helping his students. He goes too fast in lecture and is not very available (or willing) to help clarify subject matter.
very very very boring! hard to keep awake in that class! and for bio 2 they dont even curve it, even tho they say they do so get a teacher that u could actually pay attention to
tests r hard!! he says theres a curve, but guess what, theres no curve! i was 1 test question away from a higher grade before a "curve" and did i get that higher grade? NO! this guy is extremely boring nad doesnt really explain well at all...beware
If you havent got the hint yet, i will spell it out... DONT TAKE HIS CLASS...!!!
Great teacher - tests are REALLY HARD. He will help you if you go see him in office hours. If you don't study, you're screwed - so study and you can pull off a C or a B. You can get a better grade with someone else maybe? I dunno.
Horrible professor. Goes really fast in lectures and does not explain things very well. I had to read the book for the tests, but I still didn't do that well. Very monotone and boring.
Not a bad teacher...he's easy to understand in lecture and he provides powerpoints to study off of...his exams are somewhat difficult...but if you study enough you'll get an A
Pretty good teacher, but his tests are extremely hard and very confusing. He's willing to help you if you ask, but it's hard to figure out what to ask him. However, the biggest problem that I had with him was his tendency to make jokes about people who didn't think like him...
not a good teacher. moves way to fast through lectures, tests are full of vague and trick questions. i don't think he knows what he is talking about. avoid him
Avoid him at all costs!!! I have been a straight A student all my life and received a 5 on the AP Biology Exam. I thought this would be fairly simple since I had taken the course already in High School. Boy was I wrong, I received low C's on both of his tests. Even if you know the material well, this guy will find a way to trick you on the test
Tests were horrible. Found ways to trick you on purpose. Who does that?!? Changed the syllabus several times and screwed me over on a test day (moved it up, NOT BACK). Had to drop him.
Bio 2 is a hard class, it's meant to be. I wouldn't say Baer is extra hard though. I studied using his slides (they're online) and from the book. Pretty much what is required in any science class. I'm shooting for an A if there's a generous curve, but I'll probably end up with a B+.
He teaches the genetics part of Bio 2. Genetics is obviously not easy so don't expect to do well if you don't take it seriously. His tests are quite hard though, and you need to know EVERYTHING he puts in his notes in order to do well on the tests. Take Herrera instead if you can.

At first, I had heard a lot of warnings not to take his class and I must say I thought I had a chance. However, it's all true.....BEWARE OF BAER! he is not a mean guy, BUT tests are manipulaive and unclear and i studied over 10 hours each day for a week and still feel as if I got an F. Try to take another professor if you can!!!!
WOW! I never knew someone who seemed so down to earth and nice could be so mean and evil on his exam. Hard doesn't even describe him. He seems so nice, until you take the hardest exam in your entire collegiate career.
The class is very intense.. during the lecturing you know that. I studied for about 25 hours total the week leading up to the test and felt extremely confident. Then I got the exam and nearly died. I know a WHOLE lot about genetics from this class.. but my grade definetely didn't reflect that because his test questions are absolutely ridiculous.
Teaches the genetics section of Biology I and does a terrible job at it. I tried going to class the first few days but couldn't help falling asleep. His exam was full of so much uncertainty that it was impossible.
For the spring 08 semester, he taught the genetics section of BSC2010.I must say that he is one of the worst teachers I've had here at UF. Compared to the other biology teachers, his lectures put me to sleep and at times he seems unsure of what he's doing. His exam is nearly impossible, with the average being around 50%. Avoid him at all costs!
The worst test maker imaginable.
If possible, avoid this man at all costs. His lectures are boring and his tests are impossible to say the least. My best advice: if you don't have to, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!
Not a professor I would recommend. He has a hard time lecturing and his exam was extremly HARD. It was one of those exams where you go in feeling like you studied everything possible, but come out of feeling like you knew NOTHING. He needs to learn how to express himself better, if he wants to actually teach his students anything.
Don't take his class. He taught the genetics section of 2010 in spring 08. His lectures are clear and genetics isnt particularly hard, but his test was impossible. I took organic 1 concurrently with this course and didnt make less than an 80 on any tests, but just about failed Baer's exam which was on MUCH easier material. Avoid this guy.
Worst professor I have ever had. He somehow found a way to make his lectures boring even though genetics is interesting. His exam was impossible with the most ridiculous questions imagineable. Put off this class if he is teaching part of it.
I am a Biology major who has credit through the AP. I love Biology, specifically genetics. And all I can say is, Dr. Baer, who teaches the genetics section in BIO 1, is possibly the worst teacher to have ever taught at UF. Avoid him! Take it in the fall, the summer, the spring, whenever, but do NOT take Baer!
Dr. Baer is the worst teacher I've had at UF because he has terrible lecture notes that don't have much to do with the test he's ridiculously boring, and his tests are the most terrible incomprehensible, ambiguous tests our there.
He's a very intelligent guy, but can't teach. His test are ridiculously hard. Only advice is to attend class, read and highlight the text, do the practice questions, and GET THE SMOKIN NOTES. I got an A, but not without a ton of studying. His test is almost all " A and B, B and C, none of the above, all of the above. Go fast on exam (Time)
His practice exam was nothing like the midterm he gave, granted his computer crashed 3 days before the exam and he rewrote questions. Almost all of the questions were choices: A, B, A & B, or A/B/&C and very specific.Definitely go to lectures for his class. Power Point is not enough.
He was... pretty bad. I couldn't pay attention in class, and this is a problem I rarely have. I'm not exactly sure what we spent 50 minutes talking about every day. Test questions came out of no where, I thought, but maybe I didn't study enough. He asked for too many useless specifics! At least bio is divided into 3 sections.
never went to a lecture but read/memorized/lived the book two weeks in advanced. ended up with a 64 on his exam. so basically i got a little less than half wrong but the average was SO low that my grade was considered an A...thats how horribly hard it was. study your ass off from the book and you MIGHT be ok. he really needs to reevaluate his exams
Sorry to u guys in bio2, but this course was good, and he's a really cool guy. good personality and a great course. tests require a good bit of studying, but is great at testing ur understanding rather than memorizing obscure facts. definitely recommend it unless ur the lazy type (and if u r, get out of biology)
Like the last reviewer said, Charlie is a good in advanced courses. He is a population geneticist, so a lot of the class is taught in math terms, which I didn't expect. He is a fair grader and pretty flexible.TAs were fantastic & very helpful. There wasn't a textbook, which saved $ but a general evo textbook is kind of necessary.Overall a good clas
Very good teacher; I learned a lot. The lectures can be boring at times, but it is very important to continue going to class. Tests were challenging, all essay questions; but if you study hard, they are certainly passable. The curve is very generous.
Best class I've taken .. You are only responsible for understanding concepts because tests do not require any sort of memorized material. Go to all the classes. doesn't feel helpful but it is. There are only two tests and they don't cover much material. He loves what he does. Ask stupid questions. he'll answer them. Got an A. easy, useful class.
tests........ummmm dont bother studying it wouldnt do you any good
His test was very difficult. You absolutely should read the textbook and be sure to understand everything. I wish I had gone to his office hours. Be sure to attend class.
If you can, avoid at all costs. He is a very intelligent man, but his lectures are kind of difficult to follow. Also, his test (well, when I took the class) was ASTRONOMICALLY hard. I took notes in class, made notecards of the important info, the test questions were either misleading, too long, or just plain difficult.
He is the worst. I'll admit, I wasn't as prepared for his exam as I should've been, but I made sure I was for the final. I studied for days, and got a 70 on the final. I missed about one from the other sections, all the others were from his section. He makes questions confusing and his thought process for answers is convoluted.
Dr. Baer was a decent instructor on the surface. Granted, the subject material was difficult, but he made it unnecessarily difficult with his brand of insanely hard questions, and misleading practice test. If this was a 4000 level genetics class, I wouldn't be as frustrated. But since this was a general biology 1 class, inappropriate. Avoid.
Impossible tests along with a group project with 6 people. Good luck coordinating that many people. Pretty unhelpful and unsympathetic. Curves like hell because he has to.
Professor himself was very nice. Lectures are boring and difficult to get through but if you pay attention everything will make SENSE and the course will be fairly easy. Unfortunately, he made us go through an extremely frustrating group project that took up half the semester.
The subject matter is difficult but the tests are mostly conceptual. They're not impossible, but are pretty challenging. His communication and planning for exams/project has much to be desired. The group project is a pain mostly because of vague requirements and large groups. Overall would recommend.
His exam was out-of-this world difficult. Studied like crazy, and it didn't help one bit. Longest test I've ever had to read and didn't even know what some of the questions were asking. He didn't use powerpoint, only scribbled drawings on an overhead, and his lectures were extremely hard to follow.
His exam was unnecessarily long and difficult. I came to class daily and studied notes and it helped slightly. Some of the material on the test did not reflect his practice exam and lectures. Overall, I was disappointed with this professor.
Avoid at all costs. Baer doesn't care about his students' understanding of the subject matter, just about proving how smart he is. Though clearly a genius, he doesn't transfer information well. His exam was unnecessarily difficult and didn't reflect lecture AT ALL. No point in studying; praying for a decent curve at this point.
One of the worst instructors I've ever had. Had no idea what he was talking about in class, and most of the time, neither did he. Posted corrections every other lecture. There's no way to study for his test - average was a 48 and he said that it was no big deal. Admitted to having bad questions on the test and didn't care.
Unnecessarily difficult. This course was split into 3 parts and Baer taught the second part (Genetics). His notes are hard to follow. Buy Smokin' Notes and start studying early. Huge curve for overall grade, minimum for a C was above 33% in my section.
Worst professor I've ever had. He "taught" the genetics component of BSC2010. I had no idea what he was talking about so I stopped going to class. Average on the test was a 48, and he was happy with it. He has TAs write his test so that when HE takes it, he can't get an A on it. Whole class was curved so that a 33% was passing. AVOID THIS GUY
This class is titled "Evolution" but it really is "Population Genetics". So open a population genetics text book and you will find that it is very math heavy. There is no assigned textbook but there is a weekly book club meeting for Darwin's Origins and Nick Lane's Life Ascending. Without a textbook to reference you will have no idea whats going on
Nice guy who legitimately enjoys his work and material. I learned A LOT about evolution and I'm sure that he does well with research, but honestly, his grading scheme needs a revamp. He just needs to have a GOOD course percentage for homeworkdiscussion, not have students rank each other based on a group project, and express exam expectations more.
This guy is incredibly smart but not so great of a teacher. He reads directly off of his notes that will be posted online anyway. Gives only two tests that are incredibly difficult and the discussion and group project don't do much to help your overall grade. Weird curve makes a 50 a C but there is little chance to get a B or an A.
You can guess on the exam and still get the same score, if not better than you would if you studied for weeks for his exam. He structures his exams so that when he takes it, he can't get an A on it. Average was a 48. Listen to me when I tell you this, avoid this man at all costs. Put back taking Bio 1 for another semester if you need too.
He is the worst bio teacher!! I don't know why I even went to class because his TopHat questions are so difficult. He doesn't explain anything well and he always goes off topic in class. Avoid taking him at all costs. I haven't learned anything and he can't ever keep my attention during class, his lectures are very boring and too long! AVOID.
Doesn't make any sense in lecture. Goes against what some textbooks and scholarly articles. Cares more about how smart he comes off than teaching the class. Avoid this man at all costs. Purposely tries to trick you on everything.
His tophat questions have right answers but every single time he proves that the right answer is actually wrong with some ridiculous way that goes against the textbook or general biology reading WHICH IS HOW WE LEARN WE DON'T KNOW THE SPECIFIC STUFF YOU KNOW DUDE. avoid at all costs he's ruining my grades
Avoid him at all costs. He contradicts himself and teaches material that isn't supported by any journal or textbook. He makes Tophat questions where he knows what answer everyone will put (the right one) then explains why the wrong one is actually right using his faulty logic. Bad at lecturing, very boring, and can't figure out how to do anything.
Had him for the genetics portion of the class, AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Very unclear when teaching, constantly contradicts himself, tests are impossible, and Top Hat questions unnecessarily hard. Based on his testing style, wants students to fail.
Moves vary fast through lectures like most bio teachers, but he likes to take concepts and try to add his own touch on them resulting in impossible tests.
He taught the genetics section of this class. He makes trick questions that only he understand. I highly recommended waiting a semester to take bio so you don't have him.
So you're here because you're wondering if it's worth taking Bio 1 with Baer, well it isn't. He's horrible at explaining things, his powerpoint slides are impossible to follow, and his tophat questions sometimes go against general rules of biology (lovely). More than 80% of the class couldn't finish his impossible exam full of trick questions.
Awful. Just awful. Avoid at all costs. May have to retake Bio 1 because of him. makes his exams so that there are multiple right answers, so he has to go in and regrade everything. Exams are tricky. I studied 100+ hours for his exam, have received As in all my other classes except of this class.
He taught the genetics portion of Bio 1 and I was really excited for this portion, but he made it very hard. Even after reading all of the chapters , the exam was VERY difficult with many test answers being all of the above, or answer choices A and B. Basically, very tricky and avoid if you can. The exam is significantly curved but still hard.
He was overall very confusing. The pictures on his exams were hand drawn in case the question wasn't clear enough (and they're not) you now have a bad drawing to make it worse. Let's just say the curve on his exam had to be substantial bc otherwise I wouldn't have passed.
I didn't listen to his lectures because he was confusing, but I took notes on the LaunchPad book to learn the material. Go to the SI final review, it is EXTREMELY helpful. He gives practice tests that have questions almost identical to the test. A lot of people go into his test with a bad attitude and fail, which helps the curve.
Lectures detailed, but barely according to the book. He takes genetics and reforms it his way, making things complicated for a student to understand when we have to read the textbook.
Baer taught the second portion of the evolution section. He did not have very clear powerpoints but they were fine. His exam however included concepts not covered in class, nor in the textbook readings. The exam was curved, but it still did not sit well with me.
Hands down worst proffesor I have ever had. He filled in for another professor who was leaving the country in the middle of the evolution unit. Terrible lectures, test was completely ridiculous and was not reflective of any material covered or in the textbook. The average on the exam was an F, the curve saved everyone.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. The lecture notes are just lines and lines of him deriving equations that have no meaning to anyone but him. He just reads off the notes so there is no gain to coming to his class. The exams are a free for all & have "many different answers" but only his in his mind are right. Confusing and frustrating
Dr. Baer filled in for a professor when I took this class, and his exam was the most unreasonable exam I've ever taken. It didn't correlate to any of the lectures or the textbook. He also messed up the forms of the exams, resulting in half the class being at an advantage. I don't recommend taking a class with him.
Was a nice person and made good jokes, but really just a bad teacher. His lectures were out of order with the book and he would ramble on and overly explain things that didn't matter that much. Just made everything so confusing, you're better off reading the book.
Only good thing about him is that you don't have to go to class. His lectures are beyond confusing and feel disorganized. He rants about nothing and changes subjects out of the blue. You just have to read the textbook on your own and be ready for a super hard exam.
I had a surgery right before the second exam in Bio 1 - this man told me I didnt meet criteria for a make up exam. I was in bed recovering for two weeks unable to move yet my situation wasnt worthy of a makeup exam. If you can skip this course, do it. The most non sympathetic professor alive.
Get ready to teach yourself everything because he's an impotent and useless lecturer, and then fail the exam anyways because he barely covers the textbook material and picks his answers based on his warped logic. Easily worst professor I've ever had.
His lectures are just what he thinks is important and it makes everything more confusing you are better off just reading the book. Worst teacher I have ever had and the exam was horrendous. Lowest grade I have ever gotten the average was extremely low.
The exam was the most poorly written thing I've ever seen, studied over 8 hours for the exam and got a 60%. Lectures are confusing and poorly written. Doesn't use the book.
READ THE TEXTBOOK. This man is useless and the exam average wasn't even a passing score. The worst professor I have ever had and UF is not short on them. Good luck
THE WORST PROFESSOR OF MY LIFE. He jumps to whatever comes to his mind in class, does not give good lectures, and the exam was nothing like what we have learned even with textbook or smokinnotes. He should be very ashamed of himself with his teaching. Hands down THE WORST.
Does not care for student's success.
Test average for my class was extremely low and test was only 23 questions so one wrong is a big hit to your grade.
I am going to lose my scholarship because of this man's exam. I studied for WEEKS and I got a 46 on the exam, which was ABOVE AVERAGE??? I currently have a C+ in his class, but I doubt I could really pull up my grade all that much considering this exam is 60-70% of your grade. Lectures are NOT helpful?? They are random tidbits he puts on slides.
Words cannot describe how insane the exam is for his section of the class. I got an A on the first exam, so I was feeling pretty good with my study habits. I took the actual genetics class during bio too, so I expected the genetics exam to be easy. Boy was I mistaken. I failed it and the test average was a 45%. Avoid at all costs!
Truly awful. Does not know how to teach whatsoever and I'm convinced that this man lives for the pain of his students. Grammatical errors everywhere, useless lectures and tests that don't correlate to the stuff you study. When the average grade for an introductory biology class is 44% you know something's wrong.
Deserves more bad reviews. Clearly passionate about Genetics, but passion does not equal skill - truly the worst lecturer I've had in a while. Cannot get a single straightforward thought out without digressing with random and seemingly unrelated tidbits. You'll depend on the textbook way too much, and even then you won't reach much success.
Where do I even begin??? Powerpoints are pretty useless. He tells us what to study but doesn't correlate to anything on the exam. Not even smokin notes could help me with this God-awful exam. It has to mean something that a 900 plus class, not one person, could achieve an A on the exam; the average was 45%.
HE IS AWFUL his exam is nothing like anything we ever covered. smokin notes doesnt help, lecturers dont help, nothing helps. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Lectures were unorganized and fast and it was so difficult to try and keep up with the material in the lectures as well as in the textbook which was practically ignored. Not a bad guy and knows his stuff but not a good teacher/explainer. The exam was a nightmare with about a 45% average. Beware.
This guy is a nice guy, that's what sucks. His lectures have no goal, and aren't reflected on the exam. He loves: A+B, A+C, none of the above, or all of the above - he likes trick questions. Studied really hard for exam and got a D, but 30% curve got me that fat A. This man sucks at making tests, and his lectures are meaningless, but he is goated.
Funny guy but gets too distracted from his power points. His exam is super hard and our average was 44% out of 800 students. The curve was +30 points which really carried everyone's grades. Honestly, if you have this guy start studying immediately and don't rely on him for what's on the exam.
Okay... throughout the lectures he was fine. His slides are a hard to follow but if you read the textbook you will understand the concepts. HOWEVER his exam is ridiculous. I studied for a week straight, I got a 59. Average was a 44. Just beware you will probably fail his exam but the curve is astronomical. Good teacher, bad exam maker. Just beware.
He has this relaxed, almost carefree personality that, coming from a professor, is worrisome. None of the material he bases his test on is taught by him and honestly, getting a good grade on his test is purely luck. Do not take BSC2010 with Dr. Baer, you will regret it.
Lectures don't make sense in the absolute slightest that so many students have resorted to not going to class at all. He admits that we're tested on things that aren't on the exam and the exam was impossible. The average score was in the low 40s and so many students got even lower. This section was ridiculous and no amount of studying could help.
He was absolutely mind bogglingly awful. Absolutely nothing that he lectured about was on the test.
Professor Baer is a really nice guy, but not very clear in his lectures. He is very dull and does not explain things well. His test was unnecessarily difficult but, the curve saved the entire class. I would recommend taking his class if you already have a STRONG knowledge of genetics, or if working in a lab with him, but not as a Biology 1 teacher.
Dr. Baer is probably one of the worst professors I've had at UF. He's a super funny guy but he's not very good at explaining genetics to anyone taking a general biology course. His lectures make no sense and do not align with the textbook or genetics in general. I got a 60 on his test which was curved to a 92. You're better off not studying at all.
Professor Baer (Genetics) is a very nice professor and will answer any question you have, but lectures are not great and definitely require outside support. His test was terrible and everyone in the class did not perform well, but the curve saved us. Overall this professor should stick to teaching upper-level students, not underclassmen.
I have never failed an exam in my life and I got a 50 on his. The average was a 45. However he curved it 30 points so I guess that makes up for it. If he is the only option for Bio1 then you will survive I still got an A in the class but you will probably do really bad on his exam even if you feel prepared. Get smokin notes.
A nice funny guy but the lectures made no sense and did not line up with the textbook. The exam was absolutely horrible and it is the only one I have ever failed but luckily the curve was really big. Just not a good teacher or experience.
Extremely difficult test. Otherwise had only okay lectures at best, and the test did not feel like it reflected the lecture content, it more reflected the book content
I made this account specifically to rate Prof. Baer. I did the readings and homework and studied for a week. It made no difference because the exam was all over the place, asking things we never discussed and couldn't even infer. I've never had a professor with such negligence when preparing the students. also his snarky lectures are useless.
Test wasn't anything like the practice exams or any of the prior assignments.
As someone that just came out of his exam 3 for bio 1, I can say with my whole chest that his ability to correlate the exam with what we actual did in class is virtually non-existent. Not only was the test nothing like what we learned- but it included outside concepts that we just weren't ready for or just barely skimmed, with no warning. Yikes!
Worst professor ever. He made me hate bio class. I would never recommend him to anyone. Avoid this teacher at all costs. He doesn't agree with what the bio textbook says and tells the class the textbook is wrong and he's right. So stupid. I walked out of the exam yesterday laughing instead of crying because of how big of a joke that exam was.
Worse teacher of my entire life. SO RUDE. SO ARROGANT. he literally told a kid that was asking a good question to "SHUUSSHH" cuz only what professor Baer matters. i literally have never been so repulsed by a teacher, their demeanor and let alone their desire to bring tears to each and every student. He made an exam that felt like a literacy test.
BRO his evolution exam was the worst test i've ever taken. Had nothing to do with the lectures or the textbook, and made me feel like I was reading a different language. I did well on both other exams so I'm not making this crap up. He should stick to graduate courses or something bc him as a BIO 1 professor is terrible.
Baer was the definition of having a funny professor does not mean they do not suck. At the end of the day his lectures were so disorganized that they seem irrelevant to the actual course matter. His exam for evolution was the worst ever. Brought my high A(VERY HIGH A) down to an A-. His exam was full of terrible questions that made no sense. HATED.
Dr. Baer was a fun guy who clearly loved evolution. However, his exam is by far the most difficult exam I have ever taken. The mean was around 50, but the final grade was heavily curved. I studied a ton and still didn't do great.
This professor had a class average of 53% for his exam. At an institution like UF, this is clearly a professor error rather than student issue. This man is a horrendous professor.
Although I do credit the man for attempting humor in his lectures, the exam was extremely difficult. The average was so low despite that the evolution unit reportedly is supposed to be the easiest. He seems like a good, decent guy but be prepared to read morse code on the exam!! The lectures are very disorganized and not helpful too.
(Population Genetics - Graduate Course) While he can be unorganized, I found the class extremely interesting. He is kind and interesting and always available for additional explanation or help understanding the work. The tests were difficult but, fair considering the purpose of the course. A mix of reading and lecture. Tests were math-heavy.
Baer's lectures didn't correspond to the test at all. I had a 94 in the class after the first two tests and needed like a 75 to get an A in the class and I studied way above the average amount. He literally dreamt up the test and I don't think that I was confident in a single answer on the test that he gave out. Avoid him at all costs.
The exam Baer gave out did not correspond to what we learned in the class at all. It was extremely difficult and had to be curved significantly. I would avoid him at all costs regarding BSC2010.
most inconsiderate and horrendous professor I've had at UF. Was out sick for two weeks w a doctors note AND my grandma died, he approved my extension. Emailed him a week later to reopen my assignments, said no and fought me over email as to whether I exhibited 'extenuating circumstances', said I should've asked earlier (I did, w/ email proof) 0/10.
This man has a specific personality. He really jumps into material and I often felt lost for big gaps. He is a math person, so he uses math to teach the material. He is a population geneticist, so he teaches ~1/2 the class as pop gen, which is kinda whack? Exams are hard and open response, he gives former exams for studying. Bad rep but I learned!
Dr.Baer was very disorganized with his slides and they would NOT follow the book's curriculum so reading was not even helpful. Most of his lectures made no sense at all and everyone seemed to be scared to ask any question, when they did he would give such poor answers to the students. Honestly, I even lost motivation to keep going to his lectures.
In class bro literally just reads off lecture slides, which gives minimal information. There was barely any homework, but the exam was the most difficult I have EVER taken. Bro needs to stop teaching because there's no way anyone learns anything from him. Exam average was a 30%. You have been warned.
Bottom 5 professors at UF. Lectures are absolutely useless, and he doesn't know how to teach the course. Test is extremely difficult
Be very prepared to read the textbook and use tutoring services because his lectures are hard to follow and incohesive. He's incredibly nice and funny, but I fear that is the only thing he has going for him.
he's really funny but the exam is pretty awful. somehow pulled an 85 without the curve (which was like 27 points by the way), but only by sacrificing my happiness for a few weekends. would recommend smokin' notes and really look over his practice exams if he provides them.
This professor could not be any less clear with his exam questions. His lecture slides were rife with errors. I knew the material very well & still guessed on many exam questions. I ultimately earned an 88, but the exam average was a 48. At an institution like UF, that doesn't sound like a student problem--it sounds like a professor problem.
Tests are written very poorly but he makes up for it with a strong curve. Honestly just study smoking notes and do your best to get around a mid to high 60 on the test (curved to high 80 to low 90).
His lectures are absolutely horrible, so I stopped going and solely relied on smokin notes. The exam was nothing like the material we learned, and it seemed even he didn't know what he was giving, as he had to revise the practice exam he sent out multiple times. Only good thing is the exam was curved very heavily so I was able to get an A.
I learned little to nothing from the lecture and slides, relied primarily on random YouTube videos to teach the material. That being said, the exam was fair but difficult and curved 27% which really meant anyone that put in the time did well. He is extremely caring and privately helped me with material when I was struggling.
Dr. Baer didn't use learning catalytics at all but gave everyone a 100 for it as a grade booster. He answers any and all questions in class. Some of the practice questions on slides and old exams had the wrong answers that students had to call out. His exam has a very low average but a really strong curve.
Terrible. Would NEVER take again. His tests are so difficult (10 times harder than what he taught in class)
He gave the most difficult test I have ever taken in my life. He was very boring in lectures and the test had such hard questions that even after using Smokin Notes, I did bad. The curve was OK but the test was so bad that I don't even care about the curve.
All I'm gonna say is that if you have a 27% curve on your tests and that the average grade before a test is between 40%-50% then you must be doing something wrong.
Test did not match with anything that was on the exam. Boring lectures. Don't go to the lectures because he strictly reads off of the slides and gives no other information. Got a 65 on the exam. Only had a 10 point curve.
The lectures weren't the best for preparing for the exams, they were scattered. Test was curved over 20 points for this section, reading through the textbook carefully will get you the A
His lectures don't make much sense, and whenever a question is asked in class, he never truly answers the question. The exam was difficult and was purposefully trying to trick you, so make sure you know every definition (tedious ik) Plus, he made some vulgar joke about his wife and trashed on his mom for getting a B in her college class. Avoid!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROFESSOR BAER!!! He reads off of the slides in lecture, is not helpful, and gave the hardest/weirdest exam in the world. My mental health really suffered for the entirety of Unit 2 and I will never get my happiness back. SAFE YOURSELF!!!
Dr. Baer himself is a lovely person, however, as a teacher, he did a terrible job of teaching genetics. He often made multiple mistakes either verbally or on his powerpoint presentations. While he did give us a study guide, he made a mistake on the answer key. His test made absolutely no sense, BUT he did give over a 15 point curve.
Sigh. His unit is by far the hardest of the 3 both content-wise and because of the lackluster quality of his teaching. STUDY THE PRACTICE TESTS a lot of questions were very similar. Very good curve since the average is 50%. Smoking notes help but the practice questions aren't very similar. Get ready to study just to receive a lackluster grade ;(
This professor had good intentions but he was a horrible lecturer and his exam was a NIGHTMARE of disorganization and confusion. The questions were indecipherable and unclear, making the average for that exam a 50 or something. The curve was 27 points! Let that do the talking. The other profs were good but Baer's one unit tanked my grade to a B.
Dr. Baer taught Genetics. Definitely the most difficult of the three units, exam had to be curved 27pts. Slides weren't very organized and lectures were not the most helpful. No LC questions, guaranteed 10pts. Take good notes and do a lot of external studying. Be ready to crumble if you procrastinate (don't)
Baer's class was a wild ride. Exams were nightmarish, but if you stay on top of the material and use tools like unstuck AI, you can pull through. Lectures were hit-or-miss, but worth attending for the laughs.
Definitely the worst professor out of the 3 for Bio 1. The lectures are disorganized and hard to sit through since he makes everything so confusing. His exam was very poorly written and consisted of paragraph long questions meant to trick you, but I think it was his bad attempt at trying to be funny. Curve was crazy, but won't save everyone.
I won't lie the second unit was rough. I love biology but this had be second guessing my major. Buckle down from the start!! Go to class!! It's boring topics that are very hard to understand. The exam was just like the practice exams he provided so DO THOSE and learn why you got the questions wrong. He's a nice guy tho and is pretty funny.
such bad lectures... exam is so hard and the average is so low. smokin notes did not help me for this exam
Genetics is definitely the hardest unit of the three. Baer was funny but lectures were boring and confusing and the exam was very difficult. BIG exam curve (like 30%) though which was really nice. Smokin Notes saved me for this exam. Best part of the unit was that he gave away the learning catalytics points for free.
His lectures were extremely unhelpful; I had to rely on the textbook + Smokin' Notes to learn the content. The exam for his unit was horrendous, and I ended up with a 60% that was curved to an 87% after weeks of studying. I finished with an A in the class, but that was mainly due to obtaining As on the other two exams. Be prepared to study.
Dr. Baer was my least favorite of the 3. The lectures were not helpful, the majority of my learning was done via the textbook. The only reason I did well on this unit was the crazy curve he had to put in place because of a very low average he claimed was normal for his unit. Hard but study and you'll be fine.
While the professor may have been knowledgeable about his subject, it did not translate into his teachings. He failed to teach basic concepts and rambled on about seemingly unrelated things - 27 point curve; Tests were similar to practice tests (The only hope); Lectures essentially useless
It's somewhat astounding that a course like this even exists. The lectures are just walls of text with no care put into them, they are difficult to read and often don't get the point across. "Tests" are open-response exams where you are given hypotheticals and you must give an answer and explain yourself. Answers can easily be a paragraph long.
