This man loves beer. Very funny. Excellent professor. Love the British accent.
Funny guy, best professor yet, interesting class... like the accent
He really knows his stuff, and loves talking about beer!!!!
HE MAKES You FALL IN LOVE WITH BEER!!! ILOVE HiS CLASS!! EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE HIS CLASS!! AND I LOVE HIS ACCENT!!
Absolutly hilarious, Bamforth has made me fall in love with Sierra Nevada. Great teacher.
Hard Class dropped 2nd week. Nice profesor..fast email response.
THIS PROFESSOR KICKED ASS!! He know's what he's talking about, and his tests are very fair. If you went to class, you'll get A's. BEER MAKING IS FUN!
Class can be boring. Funny guy. But need to go to lecture.
Man, the only thing I regret about this class was not selling the book for more money, stupid Book Exchange ripped me off for a book I never really read anyway. Yah, so, didn't read the book, read online notes and ended up with a B. So study and get an A.
This class is fun at times but mostly boring. His tests are pretty hard considering it's random questions that he mentions in lecture. So don't fall asleep!
This class was really enjoyable and very easy if u paid attention in lecture. But even if u miss a couple classes, it's ok. He's very nice. Definitely knows what he's talking about. His passion comes through in his high spirited power point presentations!
Professor Bamforth was really funny and I LOVE his English accent! He loves beer. I thought a class about beer would be super easy, but the midterms ended up being really specific. Pay attention in lecture and read beforehand for an A.
thought would be a good class....i was wrong
read the book and get an A. Very easy class but lecture is boring.
lectures are boring. fall asleep ever time i go. book is boring too. i e-mailed him to ask him a simple question and he simply said "i already answered this during lecture"..... not helpful at all
He's very funny, but the lectures are SO unorganized and jump around- theres no clear structure. Its basically a **** class, take it if you're bored I guess...
BORING?!? How could anyone find this guy boring? Dr. Bamforth is a awesome lecturer! His passion for brewing shows in every one of his lectures. His classes are great fun and will teach you how to consistantly brew quality beer. I think too many people have taken this class expecting an easy A.
Great guy... awesome english accent... shows really funny british beer commercials in class. pretty easy class, but make sure to go to lecture. notes online are very helpful... no need to read the book to do well on tests.
Hella tight
He teahces the class very well.
**** STATUS. TOP THREE AT DAVIS EASY.
Anyone that says it's hard just wasn't paying attention. It's not super exciting, but as long as you print out or copy down the notes and do the reading which is exactly the same, it's pretty easy. Midterms are specific, though, so know the stuff.
he's a good guy, always willing to help outside of class & quick to respond w/ emails! I wouldnt reccommend takin the class for an easy A, b/c that is what i was expecting and i'm gettin exactly the opposite. do the reading & stay AWAKE during lecture. he's not boring & will hold your attention!
He's very entertaining and his class provides lots of good, interesting facts. This class is actually making me consider changing my major to food science! However, attending lecture is imperative if you want to do well.
i loved the class, he's hilarious. beware, he doesn't hesitate to ask you questionsm, despite the class size. don't sleep, he'll walk right up to you, wake you up, and ask you a question. first midterm is easy, second is deceptive -- a lot more specific, a grade lowerer for sure.
I had a whole lot of fun in class!!!Guys, this is not an easy A. Dr. Bamforth is a cool teacher! But just don't fall asleep in class; he'll wake u up!!
Very interesting teacher, gets kind of boring, but go to class and it's an easy A. Lecture is imperative for an A, but easy to get.
BEST TEACHER EVER! I have never looked forward to getting up and going to lecture so much!
Such a sweet and funny guy. He makes the class interesting w/ the funny slideshows he has. You should go to every single class in order to get the grade you want, and pay attention to what he has to say. Most of what he says in class are on the test!
Probably the best professor i've had so far. Keeps you interested in the subject matter and keeps you awake. Plus, he tells you pretty much every single test question and his midterms are 25 questions multiple choice. he doesnt want to ruin grades like some profs, he just cares that u get it.
This guy's awesome.
CHARLES! This guy rocks. Beer brewing is no easy A, but as long as you study you'll be fine. He talks about the aroma and effects alcohol has on farting. If you want to hear about farting, take him. If you wanna laugh your ass of, take him. BAMFORTH IS GOD! He gave out girl scout cookies!
great teacher, fun class
Awesome professor with a huge amout of charsima. Going to his lectures is more entertaining than going to the movies and certainly more informative. His public speaking skills are on par with the best at davis and he's extremly approachable if you have any questions. Awesome teacher, awesome class.
Great professor and great class! He is one of the funniest people I have ever met and brings it to his lectures. As long as you go and cram, you'll ace it!
Great professor, very entertaining. He makes the class very fun. The class isn't too hard, but there is a lot to learn. Not exactly an easy A by any means. The process of brewing beer is rather complicated and detailed after he breaks it down. Take this class if you want a great professor and a fun class.
Very Good. entertaining. Take This class instead of VEN, beer was a much better class.
If you like beer take this class.I took it just for enjoyment, and also to make my ucd experience more entertaining. The tests are cake, just go to lecture and browse over your notes. beware though after all the beer talk you definatley want to drink a cold one. The professor is very knowledgable. wish they had other brewing classes. Bamforth rocks
EASY A! as long as you have a double digit IQ, its an easy A. all these people who say its not an easy A must not be too bright. i went to the lectures and daydreamed. studied maybe 20 minutes right before the test and missed one question out of 100 the entire quarter. he's also one of the funniest people i've met. bamforth rocks!!
Bamforth is the best professor at UC Davis. He is very entertaining and tests are easy. He gives you almost every question that's going to be on the final beforehand.
WOW he is the Best prof here hands down. He was funny, helpful, and damn fine for an englishman lol. I will say that his class was easily my hardest class this quarter but he still made it possible for me to do well. He was also the most organized professor i've seen. All of his lectures and notes are online and easy to use.
HE IS THE FUNNIEST MAN EVER! ENJOYED THE CLASS SO MUCH.. TESTS ARE EASY BUT STILL NEED TO KNOW INFO.. BC THERES ONLY 25 QUESTIONS.. SO IF U MISS ONE ITS A LOT OF POINTS.. BUT YEAH TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!
want to boost that gpa? take this class...way cool teacher too, youll want to go to lecture
just go to lecture and u'll get an A. No need to study if you attend. If you skip class you're in a lot of trouble though! (although a "lot of trouble" might be a B). Easy and VERY entertaining class that never lasts the full time. Take it...ur gpa will thank you
Really easy class, but make sure you attend lecture to ensure you have an A. Midterms are really short, not much study time. The easiest 3 units you'll ever get. He's funny and the commercials and comments he makes are awesome.
best teacher in davis.

This is the best class at Davis! All you have to do is attend lecture and study the powerpoints and you'll be fine. He gives answers to the future questions on the midterms and final (so just show up to class). We always get out early too. This class is a lot of fun, he makes entertaining powerpoints, and he's a pretty funny guy. HIGHLY RECCOMEND!
This class is not as easy as you think...his multiple choice tests are actually pretty hard.
He is a cool guy, really makes you laugh, you actually learn in his class too even though his lectures are on powerpoint. He gets a chili pepper cause he was sad that he didn't have any when he actually checked on this.
AMAZING.. I wish I could take it over and over again... and I have NO idea why people keep saying his multiple choice tests are "actually kinda hard".. BULLS***. Easy, Fun, and Educational!!! you might actually use some of what you learn in class :)
This prof is awesome. Keeps you on your toes and active in class. His midterms pull random stuff from lectures, make sure you go to them. He gets a chili because he is a cutie with a splendiferous british accent.
great class! great professor!!!
I love this class!
One of my favorite teachers of all time.
This is my favorite class I am taking. The professor has a British accent and hillarious wit! He tells jokes the entire class. Definately the best class I have taken so far
Charlie Bamforth is awesome! In addition to being one of the most hilarious people I've ever met, he's devilishly handsome. His class isn't hard if you show up and do the reading.
This class rocks. He makes it interesting with his jokes, and how he includes little stories in it. He requested that at least one person give him a "hotness rating" so here is you red pepper Charles! Cheers!
I would recommend others to take a class with him
Classes are in general fun and interesting. He has a great accent and makes funny jokes however classes can sometimes be very long and a little boaring. He is however is NOT joking when he says if you miss lectures you will do bad on the tests!!!
Definitely a professor I'd take another class from. However, do attend his lectures. If not, you will do bad on the tests. Overall, an entertaining lecturer and professor. Worth taking. Fun.
Do not miss the opportunity to take this class. Charles Bamforth introduces himself to a class diverse in their opinions and knowledge of Beer, and bids farewell to a class filled with eager beer connoisseurs.
This class is cool! You can sit back and relax! However, it is not as easy as Charlie makes it out to be. He says that all you need to do is to show up to class and you'll do fine. He is lying. You need to study quite a bit to get an A. It's an OK class.
Charlie is an entertaining guy with enthusiasm for his subject, but this class just didn't hold my attention. He lays out all the info for you so that as long as you study and attend lecture you should do ok. It's just a lot of detailed info that you need to memorize. interesting guest speakers
The lecture is very interesting, he makes a lot of jokes wich are actually funny. We always got out early. The tests take 5 minutes to complete (seriously), some people will turn it in before everyone gets a copy. If you are looking for an A and an interesting class, this is it.
He's very animated. If you fall asleep- he'll wake you up. His tests are uber easy.
good class
Class was pretty interesting. Charlie made it seem so easy. You have to attend class and read and study to do well. I am not doing too well as of now. He is the cutest man in the world! Midterms consist of 25 questions, and I think the final is double? I may be wrong. I haven't taken the final yet, but it's cummulative.
don't bother buying the book, definately go to lecture, but you really do have to study for this class, it's not as easy as everyone says, you have to memorize beer names, temperatures, other little things so although it's not hard during the quarter, it's hard to study for his tests, but they're mc and fast, you'll be done in less than 10 minutes
A very fun class. He's one of the most engaging professors I've had and keeps the class laughing. Clearly he is passionate and knows a lot about his subject. It's a little harder than you may think, though - study for the tests because your grade will depend on it! Go to lecture because you'll enjoy it and try to skim the book once in a while.
I LOVE THIS CLASS.... it's like stand-up comedy but an extremely interesting lecture at the same time. If you take good notes and study...you will do well...duh..LOVE U CHARLES!!!
This class is so funny :) Charles is so funny and made this class very interesting. I got a 78% and ended up with a Solid B. Just go to all the lectures.I would recommmend you to take this class if you are looking for an easy class you can just realx.
This is the best class that i have taken at davis! Charles is so funny and makes you WANT to go to class. You pretty much just have to go to lectures and study the main points to do well! Great Class HIGHLY recommend this class!
You are an idiot if you get less than a B in this class. Sit back relax and allow him to make you laugh till you wanna pee. You will learn tons of info from one of the worlds most well known and respected beer making professionals. Guest lecturers include: Top Exec from Bud, Sudwerks brew master, Sierra Nevada Owner, and many others! Great Class!
THIS GUY IS HILARIOUS..i enjoyed going to class.. " you THERE!, can u say WATER (WATAH)" ( in british accent) haha.. umm.. Guest speakers are imperative on exams..all scantron..EASY A if u study his lecture slides!!!
Honestly, I took this class for the units, but i ended up LOVING it! Prof Bamforth is hilarious in the first lecture and keeps it interesting all throughout the quarter. Tests are MC (3 answers/question). Study the slides and you should do well! I don't know why it's not as popular as FST10 or NUT10, because I thought it was just as good!
If you just show up to class it's an easy B. An A requires memorization of formulas/procedures. Teacher is funny but definitely not hilarious! Those kids need to get out more often.
Awesome, great British humour, and the class is definitely not a ball-buster. Also, if you don't think he's hilarious, then you didn't understand the jokes. Informative, funny, clear. He may very well be the best teacher at Davis.
hilarious and informative.
This professor is one funny guy, but when it comes to the test I'm not laughing. Test requires a lot of memorization for detailed parts. This class is not as easy as you may think. Trust me.
Yes, he is funny guy. But, his exam is crappy.
Hilarious teacher! Walks up and down a huge lecture hall cracks jokes about students sitting and even his wife. Really takes the class on a journey through beer and all of its components. Extremely interesting! His exams are only easy "if you attend class" as Charles would say. His grading scale is great though! Get in the 70s and get a B!
Hilarious and totally fun. The absolute best class at Davis!
Charlie is a fun guy and runs a straightforward class. Very entertaining and IF you attend class, you have at least an A- locked in. Study about an hour for each test and take home an A. Cool topics about beer in culture, brewing and the science behind it. Even if beer isn't your bag, still recommended. 2 midterms, 1 final, thats it.
one of the easiest classes at UC Davis! 2 midterms about 25 questions each and 1 final with 50 questions. no need to buy or read the book---WASTE of MONEY!!!!!!! even though the Professor wrote it, there isn't much in there that is needed for the tests. just attend class regularly and study beforehand and you will do well on the tests.
I was nervous that I wouldnt get an A after getting a B on the 1st midterm. I studied a lot more for the second test and then then the final is straight off of the review sheet. Advice: read over the notes before every test, GO TO CLASS, and you'll be fine. Final is much easier than midterms if you read over everything once and memorize the review
This is one of the easiest classes at Davis! Charles is one of the funniest teachers too! He makes fun of students/his wife/beer...it's hilarious! An 88 is an A- so pretty generous grading scale. You learn a lot about beer. Midterms are very easy. Buy the book because the questions he asks at the end of lecture that are from the book are on exams.
Great class. Bamforth is a really good teacher and s very entertaining
One of the funnest classes here at UC Davis. Lectures are fun and rarely boring thanks to his dry humor. You get to meet some important people in the beer industry and really get to appreciate beer. He loves to pick on his students and some questions are pulled out of the book (I was fine without it). Do not fall asleep and have a beer.
Definitely a class to take at UC Davis. Questions posted at the end of lecture are always on the exams. Make sure to know little details as well as the general ideas/stages of brewing. Exams could be a bit tricky but good class overall. Bamforth is great! Lectures are enjoyable and entertaining.
Hilarious teacher! He's super passionate about the subject which really makes the course interesting, and it's not very hard either. There are some random things to memorize, but not anything ridiculous. The "reading questions" always end up on the exams. Highly recommend, even if you don't need it.
He is Charles Bamforth - if someone does not like him as a professor, they have issues. He is funny, clear, engaging, British, and talks about nothing but beer, what else can you ask for? Also he tells you all the questions for the tests, and they are 3 option scantron exams, really? Way to great of a professor to pass up!!!
Class was an informative stand up comedy routine. You won't want to miss class due to the mere entertainment value of Bamforth's lectures. Midterms and final were deceptively hard for being 3 answer multiple choice, but overall an easy class.
Very knowledgable guy. He is very passionate in beer and teaching. You don't want to miss any of his lecture, because you will miss all the fun.
As mentioned in the earlier reviews, this class is extremely entertaining but the exams are extremely specific and deceptively difficult.
Take this class! Do reading assignments, listen and show up to lecture. Be mindful the 2nd midterm and final were twice as hard as the 1st midterm. So don't slack off after the fist A. Always drink in moderation...
This is a great professor and beautiful man. Definitely take the class.
Class is fun but tests are difficult. Not a walk in the park like I thought it would be. Always attend lectures too since they will be on the test
Great professor, great lectures, tests are way harder than you might expect, but most of the answers are in the book.
Outstanding professor and class. Exams are more difficult than one would expect, but if you attend lecture (which is never boring) and do the reading, you'll do fine.
Really interesting professor! Very entertaining but he presented the material really briefly and quickly. Must attend class bc he posts readings and questions. Tests are actually kind of difficult
AMAZING CLASS. I appreciate beer so much more now! Yes, it is harder than I thought, and more work than expected but it was so worth it. Just read and go to class and you'll do great! Charlie is amazing, best class I've taken at UC Davis so far.
Very entertaining lectures. Somehow we take way too many notes. Indeed, the the final was swimmingly difficult but definitely pass the class.
It's an interesting class if you want to brew beer. If not, there are many other GE's that you could do instead. IT IS NOT AN EASY A. Bamforth is hilarious though, and everyone shows up to his lectures because he is so intriguing. The tests are tough though.
While he "curves" the class (on a different grading scale), the tests are all based on lecture, go to every one, (I recorded each lecture) and before the tests know the questions he asks at the end of lec. These are always on the tests. I did the reading for the first test and failed it, but only memorised lecture and aced the 2nd midterm and final
What he says is gold but his mic along with his accent made it hard to follow what he says. Not that helpful if you ask him to clarify.
The class is pretty straight forward. The only problem is that there is sometimes to much to study for so little questions that's gonna appear on the exam. One must study quite diligently.
Charles is hilarious! There are 2 midterms and a final. This isn't an easy A. Definitely study and get the book. The first midterm was really easy but the 2nd one was significantly harder. His lectures are usually very interesting and he makes it fun!
I wish that I could have taken all of my classes from Prof. Bamforth - he's easily one of the best (if not *the* best) instructors at UC Davis, and I feel privileged to have been in his classes.
His lectures are very easy to understand! He is not a tough grader. Weekly quizzes are simple. Take good notes and you should be solid!
He was a guest lecturer for FST102A in Fall 2020 because he used to teach this class. Absolutely awesome. He wrote the textbook for the class and he's hilarious.
