Oh boy.
He gives films to watch but there is alot of reading involved. If you have the time, then take this class if not. Forget about it. I just wish there wasn't so much reading involved.
He's a nice guy, down-to-earth, a little scattered. Really easy grader w/laidback expectations. He assigns a ton of reading but frankly it doesn't matter whether or not you do it.

Great guy, great discussions, great course. We had to read four books for his class that semester, which I thought was just so much fun since I had 7 in another class to read at the same time. If you gloss over the main ideas of the readings for his class, you'll get by fine. Assignments fair and enjoyable.
Told us from the beginning he doesn't believe in grades - turn in your paper, you get full credit. He doesn't teach - shows videos and chats with the class. I took this class as a G.E. requirement, so not really interested in the subject matter - which is a good thing because I didn't gain anything from it. But EASY.
Terrific Professor!!
I took this class over summer and it was the easiest class ever. Just had to write one paper a week. I recieved an A+ HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TEACHER!
I had to write a 10 page paper at the end of this class. Despite the fact it was only 6 1/2 pages, and I didn't do well on a few quizzes, I somehow got an A-. In other words, this guy is a real second-chance teacher; if you mess something up, he'll give you another opportunity to atone yourself. Very clear and incorporates students in discussi
Chas was an amazing and fun professor. he made the classes interactive and different. i highly recommend him to any body.
I'm assuming both Chas Barfoots refer to the same guy. This guy is super-easy. I took his class online for REL371. all that's required is a 2-3 paper every two weeks. VERY easy grader. I think he grades just for completion on most. Definitely take this if you're even a little interested in the New Testament.
Great professor
i took rel 390 and rel 271 at the same time online and they were so easy yet i left with a sense of understanding and I truly learned a lot but it was so easy easy a just write the papers.
He's a nice guy and really easy, just a couple of essays that I'm guessing he skims and if they're long enough and you don't sound like an idiot you get an A on. Mostly, 100 was a lot of movies, but he chose really good ones and you walk out with a good basis in whatever he taught that day.
Prof. Barfoot's class is very straight forward. There are six papers due throughout the semester. Do the reading write the paper and you get and A.
This class is very straightforward; simply write the papers and read the book and you will do well. The only issue I had with this professor is he had no interest in his students. He made no effort to reach out to us, I have not communicated with him once this semester. Usually online professors try to know something about their students.
Online combo w/rel classes. Seems disinterested in students. I emailed him for help couple times & he said to figure it out on my own. You teach yourself. Read & write an essay every other week. He's very easy, can't say I learned anything though. I just didn't like his style I guess. Maybe in person he's better?
I've taken a few of his classes. I don't know why some people said that he didn't care about his students. He had almost everyone's names in my class memorized. He knew my name right away and even remembered me the next semester when I took another one of his classes. The classes are interesting, easy, I learned a lot, I did my work, and I got an A
Cold and completely distant. I tried to initiate communication with him and I was ignored. Easy grader so if all you want is an "A" this is it. If you want to be taught you would do better with anyone else.
Barfoot is a typical arrogant university professor. He cares more about stroking his ego than teaching. I took a three week winter session class with him and he gave us a week off to read the book. There were no assignments based on the book, so we essentially took the week off for nothing. Huge waste.
I was in the same class as the last poster, who obviously didn't pay attention in class. He gave us a week off to work on our final assignment, not to read the book. Anyway, he was a great professor if you actually paid attention in class and weren't easily offended by intelligence. Religious fundies may want to look elsewhere.
Chas is disorganized and may or may not to respond to your emails. Late start class (8 weeks) had 4 assignments (one short paper and 3 quizzes). An excellent opportunity to get a good grade.
If you want an A take one of his classes. If you want to learn, be challenged, have a discourse look elsewhere. Does not reply to e-mails, which in an online class is simply ridiculous. Sends out random e-mails to the whole class in Caps calling people whiners, etc.... Not sure if this is typical of him or if he was just having an off semester.
A very straightforward, typical online course. If you read the material and do the work you will get a good grade. Had no issues with him.
Great Prof..fair.Do your assignments, hand them in as directed as you're good as gold. Lots of reading and lots of paper writing.
I took this class online and you can tell that he almost can't be bothered to teach online courses because I am sure he holds very interesting in person lectures. His instructions and expectations were crystal clear. I have never been interested in religion but this class was very interesting. I would highly rec taking a course from Prof Barfoot.
Internet class, consisted of writing essays. Easy A.
Chas is not very organized and rarely responds to emails. Exams were easy. We didn't have a clue of what grades were counted or dropped until the end of the semester. Interesting lectures, just follow review sheets.
Summer 5 week class. Easy A. Just read and write reflection papers. Have no idea if Prof. Barfoot even read them as no feedback was ever given. Wishy washy concerning the required text. Only responded to me when I was adamant that he do so. I feel like I was just given an A & have no idea if I learned what I should have learned.
I took Sociology of Religion online. You just have to read the material and write a 3-5 page report every other week. Easy A! Great class.
Easy A. Classes are an hour and fifteen minutes but he typically goes an hour max. QUizzes were put online. Take notes and pay attention to videos. Easy A, didn't learn much though.
This class is easy - if you want a simple add-on, take this. If you want to actually learn, don't. The lectures are very repetitive and his TA was even better, well - by my standards, at holding interest than he was. Somewhat organized. Does not get involved with students. Quizzes are very easy - attendance is not required.
He is amazing. I love his class and he reminds me of a preacher rather than a professor. He doesn't force you to covert, he just wants you to learn.
he is a great teacher for an easy A. I didnt worry about going into classes on at least one day a week. you still need to go because he gives important info during class about assignments and quize. but other wise most the quiz are out of the book anyways. it might be a good idea to present.. easy extra credit. great way to learn about other religi
Paucity of content offered by prof. merely generalizations. No discussion/reference to textbook. Videos(some not pre-screened by prof).Classes always ended early and 3 eliminated. No exams. No academic rigor. Prof interested in acquiring info fm students for his book/film.I learned more fm students than fm prof. Could have been interesting class.
If you're looking for an easy A, this is your class. You get 4 exams worth 20 points each. You also write two reflection papers worth 10 points each. A lot of extra credit. Not very interesting but boosts GPA
I took Religions of the World. The class was an easy A, but if you were there to actually learn, it was an extremely tough class. Pay attention to the little things. he'll put it on the quiz. Quizzes are online, so you can obviously cheat, but he only gives you 20 minutes, so you need to be quick.
don't worry With this professor he is the best. easy A class.
I took this class on line. He is the WORST professor for an online class. He didn't even post a syllabus. The entire class is based on 4 20 minute quizes which he provides no direction to help you study.
Kinda funny, but he repeats himself sometimes. Interesting material and he teaches pretty well. He's very knowledgeable and tries to make the material memorable. Very easy class, me and my brother took it together and both got A+s.
Unforgivably rude. Skims emails for keywords and then responds based on what he thinks your question is, despite repeated attempts to clarify, and becomes increasingly rude and belligerent. For an online class with only four quizzes (that he doesn't even grade) you'd think he'd find the time to do his job and at least actually read student emails.
I can honestly say that he is the absolute worst teacher I have ever had. I took this class online and he refused to respond to my emails after having problems with a quiz. When he does decide to send emails he capitalizes specific words (like he is yelling at you) and has an incredible ability to make you feel like a complete idiot.
I took him twice, classes are easy A's. His REL 321 class I took in the summer and every week I had a one page paper due easy! and the class I just finished was a Religion & Technology class I read 4 books and wrote a 3-5 pg paper on them + a final paper. No test or quizzes real straight forward class.I made an A+ in both classes.
This is the second class I have taken with Barfoot. Compared to REL100, I appreciated the depth this class offered. However, I agree with many of the other students about his rudeness in emails and lack of caring about his courses. His classes are made too simple for the students to be challenged, even if they do dedicate themselves to learning.
REL 203 was an absolutely fabulous class! Yes, it was easy - but I still feel like a learned a lot and was able to engage with the material. Furthermore, Prof Barfoot is very understanding - when my assignment failed to send, he graciously allowed me to resubmit after the deadline. In conclusion, I enjoyed his course and would recommend him!
Professor barfoot is a bit slow on the email response, but the course is quite interesting and the workload is straight forward and everything comes from the texts. There is a fair amount of reading as expected, and the material is pretty interesting. I enjoyed the class and feel it is worth it for boosting GPA.
Easy A. Some reading. I didn't email him so I didn't know about his rudeness but his lectures are interesting and it's a good class for GPA and credits.
A lot easier than I expected. I did not buy the book and just used the one provided by the library which wasn't even the required edition. When I emailed him about this is said he did not mind at all. His emails are BRIEF-but don't take it personally. I took it online-easy. He does not specify what he wants in papers so just go for it
Easiest online class I have taken. 1 2 page report and 4 quiz that are multiple choice. He did have a bit of reading but if you did it you did fine.
If this class were a gas pump it would be "self serve"! No interaction with Prof. Just write 5 papers with minimal direction and get zero feedback. What a shame to pay so much in tuition - could have just read the book and taught yourself. Oh well, easy A.
Take his class you will get an A guaranteed, there are no tests or quizzes just 8 papers that he basically skims to make sure you discuss the main points and the only reasons he takes points off is if it is not long enough, at least that is my logic. I recommend him to every one who wants an easier upper division class
Professor Barfoot is a very easy grader. The class I took was Philosophy in Religion and grades were only based on 8 different papers. It was a little hard reaching the required paper length, but his grading is extremely fair. I would definitely take him again. Granted I took an online class from him and don't know what kind of lecturer he is.
you basically have to write a paper based on the chapters that he assigns every other week. & that's the class. no other hw or tests. i don't even think he reads the papers. the only bad thing is there's a 10 page paper due @ the end of the semester.
His choice of books are the worst and most boring things you could possible make a person read. You might get an A, however, his classes teach you nothing!
Horrible. The class is not hard but you won't learn anything. He takes attendance at the end of class. When you have to resort to that because your class is so boring you should find another job.An easy class but it really if you miss more than a few times he will mark you down 2 grades from and A+ to a C+ like he did me.
If you want to hear him talking about his book all class then you will love this class. If you want to learn something so you can do well in your next class look somewhere else. This guy is a horrible teacher who just loves to hear himself talk.
He is a good teacher. I really enjoyed the hybrid class I took from him at the poly campus. 3 papers and 1 ppt presentation. Easy Peasy... He grades fair and gives you full credit if you try. I learned way more than I thought I would and really enjoyed his class.
I've taken three classes from Barfoot, and each one has been interesting. He's a little long winded in lectures, but he rocks when it comes to online courses. Plenty of time to read, your papers can really be about anything from the reading, and he appreciates appropriate humor in your essays. If you're comfortable with online, he's the way to go.
Take his online class if you want an easy A, It's all papers no exams. Just make sure the papers are long enough as he wants and you'll get full credit.
Easy online class. About 6 papers are due from two books. The second book is long, but you can merely skin the pages. The papers are mainly reflections. Very easy!!
Online class. 6 papers. Easy A.
Completely absent for all of the semster, until the final days when he might actually have to cmmunicate with students. Other than that, he takes pride in his laziness and getting paid for a job he doesn't even have to do, the computer does it for him.
Super easy but hard to recommend. He changed textbooks a couple weeks into the semester because he didn't know they don't stock his old one anymore. Almost completely absent until the last month when he started spamming my inbox with stuff like videos talking about Justin Beiber's religion. 5 easy tests and you're done. Nothing else required
If you want an easy A and want to learn I would definitely recommend Barfoot. It will definitely help your GPA. Just make sure your papers are long enough. But you have plenty of time to do them.
Super easy. I took it online. The whole class consisted of 5 quizes over the reading. The reading was pretty boring and long, but that is the whole class, no papers. No syllabus or communication with teacher though, so not the clearest of teachers.
easy A
Class required two books and I think I looked at them once. Class consisted of five opinion papers, 3-5 pages long. No citations required. SUPER SIMPLE! "Chas" is quick with a response but his syllabus is so straight forward you won't need him. Just write your papers and turn them in on time. If you get anything less than an A it was your bad.
Awesome teacher! He only ask that you write papers. No exams or quizzes. One of the best ways of learning!
3 book reports and a final paper. Do it yourself class and the grading is not harsh at all. Definitely recommend taking if looking for an easier class as long as you do the three readings.
Almost *too* easy. Online class; I always did the papers the night before with only skimming the material. I don't think he actually read through the papers, his only comment was always "I took off points for short papers."
Put in at least enough effort to do the reading and you will get an A or A+ with ease. Very helpful and understanding at a time when my computer crashed and had to turn in a paper late.
Easily the easiest class I've ever taken. Class consisted of him lecturing about religion or we watch a movie on it. It was actually very interesting. You have to write 3 summary papers and give a presentation at the end. Extremely easy.
Took online REL371/207 and both were easy. Lot of reading, but you can skim chapters for the specifics he wants in the papers. Purely read/write class, but if you follow guidelines- which he's really clear on- should be fine. I got 100% on every paper. Pretty interesting stuff to read anyways, I'm minoring in religious studies now b/c barfoot.
I really enjoyed taking this class. It was straight to the point, and I actually learned some interesting things. I give this class two thumbs up!
The class was straight forward and he let you know what is expected before the class started. He provided an online syllabus. The class consisted of 5 paper based on one book and a book review on another. You can skim the book for the answers. Easy A, got 100/101 since A+ is 101 point. Plan on taking more class with him. Was in A black.
This is my second course that I have taken with Barfoot. I will be taking every/any class that he teaches! Amazing experience. The material is fascinating and he is great. I love how his simple class outline (all papers) creates a stress-free but engaging atmosphere. I love it. Take any of his classes!
I really like this class!!! I totally decided to switch to a religion major. He grades papers very easy (full points) just as long as you do the required paper length, etc. Class had a series of papers only - no tests or quizzes. The research material is interesting and leaves you hanging/wanting more. Cheers and a big smiley face! :)
great course. you read the book and wroite an essay on it answering certain questions he wanted you to. wasn't very time consuming at all, it took me 3-4 hours to read the chapters and write the essay so if you don't have a lot of time but want an A in a 400 level course take this one.
Easy professor!! You just need to write a lot of papers. No tests, no quizzes, only papers!!!
6 essays for the class that are based on the books he assigns and you're basically guaranteed an A as long as you meet the minimum page requirement for each essay.
Great teacher, awesome class format. Papers only. Be prepared to read and write. Very fair grader. His classes are interesting as well. The readings will certainly make you think. this is the second class I have taken with him. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone.
Gotta say, quite an easy upper-division course. I briefly skimmed the weekly-readings just to get a feel for the answers to his prompt-questions. All the papers I wrote did answer his questions properly but were all "opinion papers" and was just me rambling on about my own thoughts. Was able to do an entire paper in about an hour each week.
This was a hybrid that met once a week for 2 h 45 mins. At the beginning of the semester he changed it so we'd only meet for 1 h 30 mins:) it was great. Super easy/straightforward, just read the books and write essays about what you thought. Not hard at all, don't be lazy.
Really easy upper division literacy class. 6 week class, 6 essays in total, 1 a week. Doesn't even read the essays, just write your opinion and quote the text. As long as you hit the word limit and cite the text, you get a 100%.
This professor is very straightforward and very interesting to listen to. His grading scale is very easy if you just do your work. Instead tests, you just write a few essays and do a power point presentation. You do learn a lot in this course and it is very interesting! I would suggest taking it!
He is Awesome professor..
Awesome teacher, very straightforward and knowledgeable. You can complete the class as fast as you want, it is comprised of 6 written papers that you need the books for, and that is it. As long as your paper is the length he asks for, you should do fine.
This class was an easy A!!! Read a couple of chapters a week and write a 2 to 3 page summary of those chapters. the final paper was about 4 to 5 pages, but again, it's super easy. Great guy too! Very professional and kind in his emails. Responds quickly.
7 essays. 3-5 pages for 6 of them. 5-7 pages for the final one. If you meet page requirement and have attempted to cover the topics, you'll get full credit. Grades on +/- scale. No additional quizzes, assignments, exams. No extra credit but you shouldn't need it! Recommend him.
Easy A! Write the maximum amount of pages per assignment. He seems to be interested in quantity over quality. You just have to skim over the books to get a sense for what you have to write on. This is the class you want to take if you want three credits on autopilot.
I also took his REL 207 & REL 371 classes, all online. Uses textbooks and some videos to write short essays. Easy A in all his classes that didn't take away from my studying for other classes. Just make sure you use all the sources required for each paper and don't go under the page limit and you will get an A.
Super easy class, graded on a few 3-5 page papers based on books. He is an easy grader and interesting person.
Easiest class ever. 6 papers throughout the semester and you get an automatic 100% if you meet the minimum page requirement. If you don't get an A its not his fault
simply he is the best
I took PHI-105 with him in 2006 but he left a very good impression on me. Will kind of immerse you in the real world if you live a sheltered life. You will likely walk away with the ability to analyze better than before. You learn a bit about history, politics, and current events too. Everyone passed with a high grade.
EASY course. If you're a Christian, understand that this class is history based and not about faith. Stand firm and don't be shaken b/c It criticizes Christianity a lot. If you do all of the 8 papers and simply meet the length requirement, you'll get a 100%. 101% is an A+, impossible to get.
Take this class if you want an A, seriously. Barfoot was a good professor in that all of the content was clear, though he seems to not care what you wrote in relation to how much. Definitely never go under the length requirement if you want 100%. 6 papers total, no tests. Easy A.
Easy A.Interesting material. All papers, no tests. Cares more about quantity than quality. Turn everything in on time with the right amount of pages and you'll get 100%.
Easy A. All papers, no tests or anything. If you want an A do the papers, as easy as that. Make sure they are the proper length and at least put a little bit of thought into them and you will be golden.
Professor Barfoot was awesome in REL 321. No tests, discussion boards, long papers, lectures... One written assignment each week, 3 pages double spaced on anything you want to talk about within the weeks readings. About 50-75 pages of reading each week, but you don't even really need to do that. Easy class, easy A+. Would take it again and again!!!
Basically, you do the assignments and if you stay on topic and reach the page limit, you get 100%. Worth it. Take this class if you're looking for a no stress online class.
He is honestly one of the greatest professors at ASU. He is very clear of his expectations and is extremely reasonable in his assignments. I loved the course material as well. Seriously, everyone, take this class.
GPA BOOSTER! Easy class, just a lot of writing involved, sort of. A paper was due every week, 6 or 7 total, 2-3 pages each, so they weren't too bad. I barely read and I destroyed his class. To put this in perspective I quoted a Chipotle to-go bad in my final paper and got a 100%
MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR. Assigns a decent amount of reading, but it isn't hard and you have a week between each due assignment. The papers are only 3 pages long (the final paper is 4-5 pages), and usually about 3 main topics (so if you got behind on reading you can read only about what you need to for the paper)! He states he hates busy work. AWESOME
Professor Barfoot is a great motivator and expects you to read a lot. DO NOT use your own sources and go on personal tangents in you papers!! That's probably the only way to fail this course. Use only the given source and you'll do fine.
Easy A. A 3-5 page essay due every 2 weeks. Usually based on a short reading assignment. I am pretty sure he just grades for length. I wrote a book review on a book I did not even own, and got 100%. Just do all the assignments to the required length and you should get an A without a problem.
He is an excellent professor! 3 books, papers are due every week but they are only to be about 3 pages and double spaced. I would take a class of his again any time!
I took the 7 week course, there were three books we were meant to read in this time and that was a bit much since I was in the midst of an 18 credit semester. However, even with a paper due every week I got an A in the class and and simply read what was necessity, thus the sections used in the prompts. Take his class, it's completely worth it.
As if an online religion class isn't easy enough, Barfoot's entirely hands-off, laid back approach makes this class even easier. You can write on just about anything you desire for each short paper for a guaranteed 100% on each one and an automatic A in the class. Barfoot is a pretty cool guy as well.
There is a lot of reading for this class. The teacher is pretty awesome though, he allows you to form your own opinions about American religion. As long as you meet the minimum length requirements for the assignments you should expect a high grade. Do the reading and submit your essays on time and you should receive an "A."
This class consists of a 3 page paper a week, no quizzes, discussions or final exam - just a 4-6 page paper at the end of class. You must buy the books to pass, since the papers are on the readings. Great class overall, and very interesting books.
Great Class. Do your papers and pass.
If you don't mind reading and writing - this is the class for you. He has short lectures each week, and even though I may not have always agreed with all of the information, it was still very interesting to read and I learned a lot about the Protestant view of the New Testament.
This was a really good class. I am very interested in religion, especially from the historical viewpoint. The book was easy to understand and the lectures were extremely short. All that was required was one 3-page paper a week based on the reading and lecture.
Second class with Barfoot and would take again. Read, view lecture, write; if you follow the directions, read the material, write according to his very clear instructions, you'll do well. He picks great material, allows you to integrate your experiences and opinions into your writing (as long as it applies) - he treats you like an adult.
Only had to write papers. A short one due each week that was essentially just a summary of the readings. I just paraphrased/quoted the topic sentences in each section of the book (properly cited) and got an A on every assignment. I'll be taking another class with him next semester (REL315).
This class is easy. A 3 page essay is due weekly based on the reading and the lecture. There are no tests. I liked his textbooks and would actually read them again. I would definitely take Professor Barfoot again.
Hands down the best professor at ASU. He is an Ivy-league trained theologian and world class lecturer. If you love religion, you will thank me. If you hate religion, you will thank me. You will write one short paper a week that is a summary of the reading. Skim the assigned segments and hit the page requirements to get an A+. Best Class Ever.
Amazing! I'd take him again and again! Every week you read, listen to HIS short lecture (20-30 min), and produce a 3-pg. paper on the material. He is very specific on what he wants so do it and you will get an A! No nonsense, no discussions, no busywork. Just the paper 1x weekly. Can he be my teacher for every class??
First off he is an awesome guy! You have one three page paper due every week which I am not sure if he reads. all I did was read some of the book and talk about what i read. he also does not want you citing outside sources, so all you need is the book. No test, No exam, No stress. Loved the class
This class is great for GPA boosting. Overall, you will write 9 papers with each being 3 pages long . You are allowed to use imagery but do NOT abuse this. The reading material may be long but it is mind opening. You do not need to be a great writer to get full points. Just make sure to actually read the books. You will have plenty of time. Grade A
As an Athiest, I loved this class. He is not only a great professor, but very knowledgeable as well. Short papers due each week. He is fair and looks for comprehension on the topics. Reading was a hard to follow as I have not picked up a Bible in over 15 yrs. I am taking his REL371 course next!
Professor Barefoot utilizes a unique method of providing course material (a lot of reading), then you write a 3 page paper on what you learned. I hadn't anticipated how much I would really learn in this manner. No exams and no final, so you're genuinely reading, then writing about things that touched you personally. I have absorbed so much more!
This was one of the most informational classes I have ever taken. The structure of the class is a unique and a good way of absorbing the material by summarizing what we have learned. The textbooks in the 371 and the 315 courses are clear and informative. I got an A+ in the class.
I learned a lot from his classes and plan to take him again in the fall.
Grades on a 100pt scale. 100A, 101A+. I do not know how he determines that +1 point for an A+. Lectures skewed towards familiarity with the Bible or Judeo-Christian culture which I had a problem with. Material was very basic and did not fit REL modus of scientific study of religion. Grading fair otherwise.
Such a great professor! I am a religion major& he is by far my favorite professor. He has short/20 mins. lectures each week, reading from the text, & you write a short essay on what you learned with your own "voice". It is a fun way to learn, encouraging us to analyze/think for ourselves-not just parroting back what we've read. Taking him again!
Rel 315. Great professor! Short/thoughtful lectures & text reading. No discussion boards! Each week you will write a short essay to show understanding of the material, & get to use your own voice in writing-not just repeat back. A fun way to learn-no busy work-read, watch lecture, & write a short essay. You'll be surprised by how much you learn.
Great professor. Interesting lectures. This is an easy class, in that there is no busy work. If you listen to the short lectures & read the assigned chapters, you will be ready for the weekly short essays. There are no discussion boards, quizzes, or exams. The essays make you think about the material. It's a great way to learn!
ONE OF THE BEST INSTRUCTORS at ASU! No discussion boards, quizzes, or tests. There's just 3 page papers due each week on the materials assigned for that week. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE! Students have gotten caught with that. Probably the fastest grader at ASU! The learning materials and book are not boring at all! Take this professor, you won't regret it!
Homework consists of 1 paper a week. We only used our textbook for the first week's paper. For the remaining papers, he let us use the internet for research. The class is easy as long as you do not mind research and writing. Video lectures are usually half an hour, but good. I enrolled in 2 more of his classes. Definitely a great instructor!
Wonderful class. Easy A if you do the little bit of research required. As said in other reviews, one paper due each week and no discussion boards!! However, I still learned quite a bit even though there wasn't much homework. I would recommend him 100%!!!
Great Professor! Excellent material that he is well versed in and keeps it very interesting! Highly recommend him to all religious study majors and even those that are not! You will learn a great deal and enjoy it! 3-4 page paper every week but plenty of material given to complete this!
I really enjoyed this class. Prof. Barfoot gives clear grading instructions and he is also clear in what is expected. The textbook was hard to read but I got through it.
Yet another amazing course. I was afraid it would be biased, but he provided material showing both sides to an argument. Textbooks were great and admitted when there wasn't historical proof to back portions of the Bible. No quizzes, discussion board posts, or tests. One paper a week. History buffs would enjoy this class. Easy A if you enjoy writing
No tests; weekly written assignments that can only cite the book/lectures. Great material! You'll find it applies across multiple disciplines. Gets you thinking. Lectures were entertaining at times. Would take again. Near impossible get an A+. Must earn 101%. Extra credit earned randomly based on subjective perception of final paper. Need to wow!
I have had Professor Barfoot for numerous classes and am always happy with my experience. He is a great professor who cares about his students. Grades are based on only a handful of assignments. The reading is always interesting and the lectures are informative. I wish I could take him for all of my classes!!
This class was the easiest class I took all semester. Its a session A course so its a lot more fast pace. We only had 6 essays and all of the subjects were clear. They were worth 16 points and the final was worth 20 points, and 21 points if you exceed his expectations. Make sure you get all the required books and you'll get an easy A. Glad I took!
Charles was an excellent teacher. The work that is expected is very clear and concise. The topics for essays were very general, but as long as you write the 3 pages that is required, you will get 100%. My advice for the essays, write your opinion, that will help you meet that 3 page minimum. Enjoy this class! It is very easy & you'll learn a lot.
Really nice professor, understands what it's like being a student. All you gotta do is keep up with the reading and make sure to do all assignments and meet all requirements for the papers. All you are doing is reading from the textbooks and writing a 3-page paper a week.
SUPER EASY A!!!! especially for an upper division course. the only course content is essays, i did the 6 week B session course. video lectures are extremely boring, but despite the fact, you can definitely get an A. as long as you follow the prompt and length requirements (3 pages), you'll get 100% on each essay, and the content is interesting!
3 page paper every week on lecture and doing some of your own research on a topic he gives you. Very easy 300 level course.
3pg paper every week. Little research and 45min lecture to watch. Isn't very clear on rubrics ect but fill up the three pages and you should be fine. First paper was over the ENTIRE 333p BOOK but that's the only time we ever used it so order last minute from Chegg and get the free download for 7 days and return it. Easy A for the 300 level class.
This course is research based. You will spend the majority of your time researching a topic and writing a 3-5 page paper on each topic every week. If you put forth the effort to write a cohesive, thought out paper and don't plagiarize anyone else's work, you will do well.
I really enjoyed this class and professor! I think the other reviews give a great idea of what to expect, I just wanted to add a few things. He doesn't use Blackboard the way other profs do, he just uses it to assign the essay prompts and as a lecture video platform. Everything is submitted through email and the submission time is at noon.
I took his online course over summer. Very straightforward and the work you put in will be the sole factor of your grade. Read the assigned chapters/articles, watch the video lecture, and the only assignments were essays. He is a very nice guy that replies fast and provides good feedback. If you do the work & take it seriously you will easily pass!
Very paper Heavy, but he knows his stuff. This class was pretty easy, if you hat papers, this class is not for you with a paper due every week. He tells you exactly what he wants in your paper. Unbiased , will not judge or push religion onto you. this guy Rocks!
Clear expectations for assignments and extremely easy. Participate, you pass with an A. One 3 page reflection paper per unit. AND they were double spaced. The content is interesting and you don't need to be religious to do well in the course. If you like history, you would like this class. Awesome instructor. I would definitely take him again!
Learned so much from this religion class. This class was very to the point, readings were assigned along with one class video and a 3 page essay was due once a week based on these readings. Can always work ahead if you have a busy week ahead. Easy A!
This class requires a lot of writing, but it isn't challenging and you learn a lot about religion. Took this class for credit and I'm glad I picked it.
Truly a great class. You have to write a paper every week but it's interesting material if you are open minded. Just write what you feel and you will pass. He's easy to talk to and care's a lot about his students. I wish all my instructors were like him.
I took session A so it was seven weeks. One 3 pg. paper due every week. Nothing else. Rent or buy the book because he does look for quotes from book in your papers. As long as you follow guidelines of papers should get full credit. He allowed us to re-write our first three papers if we didn't obtain a high grade.
The class is fairly easy, you just write a 3 page paper a week, totaling 7, and that's it. No other assignments. You need to reference the book here and there, but I found it on Google Books for free to get most of the info needed, not all the chapters are there though. He takes the class overly seriously, but I got 100% on all the papers.
Prof Barfoot seems like a solid guy. His lectures were way too slow for me, but you can tell he cares about his subject. The class structure is super simple: you write one paper every week. No tests/quizzes.
Really glad I signed up for Barfoot. There were no tests and we only used the assigned book the first week of class. Every week you are expected to write a 3 page paper on a church/organization and a 1 paragraph summary on his video lecture. Take your time and DO NOT plagiarize. Easy A
Professor Barfoot is awesome. He is extremely passionate about what he teaches which is so motivational especially when he is giving you 3 page papers every week. But honestly he is awesome for online because all you need to do is read the text assigned and watch his lecture that is attached and takes notes for your papers and you are golden.
Easy going teacher but with great material. Has a lot of knowledge and experience in the field. No tricky stuff with him, pretty clear. 3 page papers on a subject. I appreciate that he exposes you with the material but does not bombard you with work that it becomes to overwhelming to actually take in and analyze. Very informative course.
You write 4 papers. Thats it. It is AMAZING!!!!!!! Watch the lecture and skim the text book and you will pass. I honestly was super amazed with this class and professor. He is well educated and treats his students with respect.
Professor Barfoot is a highly respected professor and clearly demonstrates an extensive knowledge on comparative mysticism. However, I feel like he doesn't receive as much credit from students unless they genuinely care about the subject. He does require a massive amount of reading as well as an essay every week, but the subject is fascinating imo.
He's a good teacher but he needs to be more specific on his expectations. I tried asking him some questions on how I can improve my writing but was answered with indirect answers. A excellent teacher should be able to directly answer. Overall easy class.
Read a few chapters, watch a short video lecture and right a 3 page summary/reflection paper each week. This is not a class on faith and is not meant to create religious debate. It's about the history of the writing of the New Testament. Stick to the material and it's a guaranteed A.
Buyer Beware. If you're looking for an easy class to bs through: This is it. If you are interested in learning or can think critically don't bother. This course is built upon the extremely heterodox Liberation Theology, and a book that is outright antagonistic to its audience. Dissent is not tolerated by the professor, he will mark you off for it.
Lots of reading and video lectures every week with 3 page paper due at noon every Monday. No late work accepted. Not a hard class at all, just takes up a lot of time
Very much enjoyed his class. He just required a paper a week. The material was interesting. The text, however, was only used the first week.
If you make sure to read the required chapters and watch at least part of any videos posted, you'll have no trouble passing this course. Homework is a 3 page (double spaced) paper every week on the readings, & Charles is a super fair grader, but you HAVE to put a reference in to show you did the reading.
I enjoyed Barfoot's class. Reference the book and lecture videos in your papers! He'll dock points if you just use online resources. A paper a week and simple rubric to follow. I like that he gives options on what to write about. Doesn't give individual feedback due to multiple, large class sizes. Overall, good class. I'd take him again I could.
Took Professor Barfoot for Witchcraft and Heresy in Europe and honestly this class was by far one of my favorite electives. The content is fascinating and a bonus no exams, one assignment due each week, super easy assignments, and he is a fast grader. The assignments are just summaries of sections of the assigned readings it's super easy
I took his A course. We only used the book once. There is a paper due each week and it needs to be 3 pages long. You just write a paper on a church in America. At the end of each paper you just need to write a paragraph on the lecture. Really easy grader. Easy A.
Took American Religious Traditions. Lectures were subjective and more like a personal journal for professor. Wrote a paper a week on a religious "tradition" and had to decide if it was a "winner" or "loser". Grading for an "A+" was based on his personal views. I was 1 point shy of his "A+" which he says: "it is what it is". Do not recommend.
I took Barfoot twice this past year and enjoyed his classes a lot. If writing does not come easy for you, I'm not sure if I would recommend. One paper a week isn't bad at all. I got a hundred on all of the essays I wrote and didn't even write them until the day they were due. If you're interested in Religion then his classes allow you to explore it
If you are looking for an easy A, I would recommend this class. It will help boost your GPA. There is textbook readings and online lectures. The assignments consists of easy 3 page essays every week. Not difficult at all. The material is interesting too!
I would take this professor again. Very clear on what he expects. Very organized as well as adequate in grading. Although 3-page essay every week can sound frightening sometimes, once you start, it is not so bad at all. The essay topics are broad so you have liberty to explore yourself and your style. I would recommend him
There is just a 3 page paper due each week (which sounds difficult, but it really isn't). His lectures are long and boring (but you have to write about them) so I put them on 2x speed. The ONLY way to get an A+ is if you "Wow" him in your final 4-5 page paper as well as get 100% in everything else. Other than that it was a very easy class.
The class was really easy. Short paper every week. He lectures more about his personal life and random anecdotes than the actual lecture topic.
Really encouraged me to challenge my thinking and consider things I hadn't thought of before. One 3 page essay due every week (so very easy when it comes to doing homework) but A LOT of reading! Able to get ahead as desired. If you are interested and do your reading and watch the short lectures you will do fine.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IN A SUMMER SESSION! I personally feel that this class should not be offered in a 7.5 week course. Far, far too much material to cover. I was left rather disappointed that I didnt get as much out of the class as I had hoped. Lots of reading, 3 page paper due every week, no feedback on papers other than assignment covered.
Only a few assignments and no feedback
Easy class overall... 3-page essays due every Friday. He gave me 100% on every essay. Easiest class and professor. Material is very interesting, but boring. Will have to read textbook and watch long videos to be successful and follow his instructions.
He grades on content in your essay so be prepared to cite book and lecture videos in text to get your full points. 3 page essay every week and mkare sure you follow formating
This has been my favorite class ever! Lots of reading(use the audible app) but its interesting and doesn't feel bad (has to do with psychedelics and mystical experiences) 3 page paper/summary every week but its very easy to do 1000000% take this course you wont regret it!!
Was an ok online class but too many chapters for each paper, giving a lower grade just because he felt the paper wasn't long enough even though it met the rubric criteria was kind of dumb.
Prof Barfoot sometimes gets distracted talking about personal anecdotes during lectures. The class was very simple: lectures, readings, and then papers about the lectures and readings, no tests. If you're capable of fluffing up your writing a bit, getting to the page requirement isn't too hard. I got the books from local library and mostly skimmed.
Professor Barfoot is an excellent professor as long as you're in school to do some work. My online class consisted of 6 papers, each 3-4 pages. If you read the text and write your own paper, you will do GREAT! He is very kind and gives great feedback. The class is super straight forward and not overwhelming at all. The papers all have good topics.
Barfoot really doesn't care about anything. As long as you do the assignment to the required 3 pages and cite the book at least once you'll get 100% on the papers. There are 6 papers for the whole class and no tests. The material isn't that bad and the textbook is interesting. The only reason I got a B- is I was too lazy to turn in one assignment.
Took Professor Barfoot for REL321, now taking him again for REL320 to fulfill the HU requirements. Great professor, quick grader, and only 1 assignment each week. The textbook he picked for REL321 was great, it was easy to read and understand. Hoping for a similar class for REL320! Take him if you can, he is GREAT!
Definitely paper heavy. In fact all assignments are papers. But the course is incredibly interesting. I would suggest to watch his lectures first, then read the given week's chapters, for a better understanding. Lots of reading (though you can skim and focus on what info you need for your paper). Learned a lot.
Put effort into your papers and you will be set!! Professor Barfoot is very accommodating with advance notice, very passionate about the material, and the textbook is pretty great!!
Professor Barfoot is extremely nice and extremely sweet. His class is amazing and only involves 6 assignments total. Each assignment requires you to type out a 3 page paper about the easy readings, and the easy, interesting, and clear lectures. He answers his emails quickly. Please take his class. You will learn a lot. It is a very easy class.
Loved this class and professor. Ton of reading & 3 page paper due each week. Just skimmed book for what I needed for each paper. Must have book quotes. Got full points each week with feedback from him for doing a good job. For A+ you need to go above on last paper. I wrote 6 pages including quotes from each source. Easy A just do what prompt says.
2nd class taken with Barfoot. Got an A in both. I like writing, so his teaching style is a good fit for me. His class is very straight forward. Follow the rubric, cite your sources, and meet the minimum page requirement! If writing isnt your strength, you might struggle as youll have a paper due each week. Id take a 3rd class with him if I could
Stop reading this review and add this class to your cart. By far the easiest upper-division class I took at ASU. If you buy the textbook and skim it for your papers you will get an easy A.
Charles Barfoot is one of two of my favorite professors. Not only have I taken this class, but 4 others. He is a reliable teacher and constantly busy, but in the context of religious studies, his teaching style aids in personal understanding and development through the employment of essays coinciding with books. LOVE HIM.
super easy class!! he literally only grades for completion, and you can easily get an a as long as your papers are long enough. getting an a+ requires an outstanding final paper, but its possible
Lots of lecture and an insane amount of reading, however his class is very informative and his grading criteria isn't difficult to meet. Excellent teacher.
A 3 pg essay/week, only 6 essays in a half-semester course. An easy grader, its just a lot of reading. There are 3 required textbooks, & you NEED them to write your papers. A really interesting class, just dont procrastinate or you'll spend your friday nights reading and writing about Judaism. Take it, do the 6 assignments, get an A.
This is a dream professor if you are self-motivated. Simple, clear cut weekly 3-page papers based on his lectures. Prof. Barfoot makes the information understandable and relatable even for an individual like myself with no background in theology whatsoever. No tests, no quizzes, just a clearly defined weekly report due each Friday.
Professor Barfoot is among the best professors Ive encountered. His lectures are thorough, his passion for his work and students is clear, and he houses a library of resources to help with any question you could imagine. If his name pops up for a class, it is an easy choice.
Guy just Rambles about his own life which is rather narcissistic.. He is overtly political and disses the people he disagrees with which annoys me because this class is not about politics... However, one political indoctrination course is required at ASU and this one is easy. Just write the papers and pretend to agree and you will get an A.
Prof. Barfoot is passionate and genuine in his lectures. He made the material very digestible and the assignments were easy and to the point. The textbook is actually interesting to read and I would definitely recommend this class to anyone interested in religion as an elective.
If you need an upper-division Humanities (HU) and Cultural Diversity (C) credit, this is the class to take! All you need to do is write 5 papers that are 3 pages long with quotes from the book. For your final paper (6th paper), you will need to will need to write 6+ pages with quotes from the modules to get an A+. Highly Recommend!
I truly enjoyed this class. I believe Professor Barfoot is a very fair grader. You need to read the assignments and do the requirements to a T. There are not a lot of requirements but they are very obvious. This class was a breath of fresh air for anyone that is curious to learn about New Testament. Most of what I learned was absolutely shocking!
Charles Barfoot is a good man and knows what he is talking about. He is ant a ballbuster either. As long as you give him decent work and on time he will give you a fair grade. Not like some of the lame ASU teachers. Cheers to Charles!
Just do the work and do it right and you will have no issues, he makes it fairly easy.
This was a great class! Easy A Follow the instructions. Write your 3 papers and quote from the book with page numbers and you're good to go! He's a really Fair grader. Do the work and pass. Easy class Def. Recommened
There was little teaching in this online class, I read the textbooks and wrote papers that essentially summarized the chapters. I had no interaction with the professor other than announcements that papers were graded. He left no feedback, only saying "Good job" on one of the 6 papers for the class. I enjoyed the subject but did not like him.
Professor Barfoot is awesome. You have 6 assignments the whole class, they are all 3 page essays with a summary/reflection for each chapter that you are required to read. The Final Assignment just asks who you think the two most important preachers are in present day Evangelism, 3-4 pages. Follow the instructions, you'll get an A for sure.
Professor Barfoot is of the "less is more" mind in terms of graded assignments. He assigns six papers for grades, five of which are 3 pages and the final one is 4 pages. As long as you follow his criteria and requirements for each assignment, you will do well.
This class was so easy. 6 papers in total. 5 of them are 3-page papers and the final is a 4-page paper. The only thing I did not like was that he wants you to watch a video of him talking about the topic and then write a summary along with the paper.
Chas is so nice! He is caring and if you make the effort to get to know him and take the time to read his course information and send emails, he will respond quickly. He was super nice and easy grader.
Every single lecture so far (still in the middle of the class) has been a long self promo of his own book in between a few sentences of worthwhile subject matter. He talks like a preacher and can be a little condescending. Class was easy if you can write, and we were given a generous amount of time to read textbook before first assignment was due.
This class is easy as it only goes off of 5 essays (2-3 pages each) not requiring the book for reference. It does require a summary of his lecture which are usually more about himself than the actual topic. deadlines are slightly flexible if there is a proper excuse, then it'll be allowed to be extended.
Professor Barfoot seems like a very genuine and nice person. His class was extremely easy and only consisted of one essay per week on the lectures and readings. He is also a very easy grader and as long as you meet the basic guidelines of the essays you will get an A. If you need an easy class I recommend taking a course with him!
One three paper due every week with a paragraph summary of a one hour lecture included. Not strict on formatting and gives clear expectations for content. Only complaint I had was that the textbook was extremely complicated and his lectures were hard to grasp. Although, as long as you try, you will do good in this class.
It is not a bad class if you need a GPA boost but would look around for others. The class is relatively easy, and you only do essays and video summaries. He rarely gives any feedback on essays, and it is just a quiet class.
Easy grader. 5 papers, follow instructions and you will get 100%. First 4 papers are 3 pages, last is 4. He says longer is better - write up till the very end of the last page. At the end of each paper, u need a summary of the lecture (does not count towards reaching the required page length). Must buy books and use page numbers & quotes in papers.
Class was very easy to do. Few writing assignments that you could knock out in like one hour if you're a decent writer. Only complaint is that this guy definitely has an inflated ego and makes it apparent in his lecture. Don't believe there was one lecture that didn't talk about his ivy league status or how great of a preacher he was.
Easy A as long as you do the work. The material is interesting and as long as you somewhat get the point he gives full credit. 100 is not an A+, you have to write like an astonishing paper to get an A+. Paper every week, but the class is short for the amount of credit you get. So just do it and work hard then it's over and ur free the rest of sem.
I took this to learn traditions and American religious culture. 3 papers/wk different denominations on history, theology, government, and growth trajectory. Culture and traditions were not discussed. 17/20 of these were Christian, which I found extremely disappointing.completely self taught and covers the history of Christianity in modern US
This class was so easy with Professor Barfoot. The only assignments were six 3-page papers throughout the course, including a lecture video summary. The textbook is required since you have to use page numbers in your papers. I ended with a 100%!
Read the material, write according to the instructions, This class is amazing.
Took this class as a cultural diversity requirement and I'm so glad I did! This class was by far the easiest class I've taken at ASU. 6 papers written for the entire class and that's it. No homework or quizzes. Wrote most of these papers in 3 hours or less. Follow the rubric and he'll give you 100% every time.
Write MORE than what he says you need to & put page numbers- you'll get an A. I got no feedback. PAINFUL lectures you can't get out of watching- you have to write about them. Its 50% him talking about himself and his plastic surgery. I learned nothing that I wanted to from him. There were FIVE required books (not textbooks), found a few free online
Whole class is graded on 5 essays. If your not a strong writer don't take this class. Essays are graded leniently, just meet content length requirements and follow the outline given for each essay, you will prob get full points. Very little info, material and help given by prof but if you can write an essay with vague instructions you will do fine.
Do not take. Any effort you put into this class is not reciprocated. No feedback ever. Several books to read but absolutely no guidance given. Grades on if you met the page count and probably doesn't actually read what you've put time into writing. Complains in his syllabus he has too many students and yet he doesn't interact with them anyways.
This class is graded on 6 3-page essays that are reasonably easy; however, the professor gives no feedback and gives everyone the same score. Good luck getting an A+, I would be surprised if he even reads the essays you submit.
This is a fairly easy elective, just write the papers and cite the sources and you pretty much get an A. I spent a bunch of time writing the papers but they aren't hard. Two books you have to buy in order to write about them they are actually a good read, I used to audiobook them on the bus write down the quotes and then use them on the paper.
This class is a breeze, you do have to read the textbooks, watch like one short lecture, and you then write papers on what you have learned in that module. As long as you do it in a timely manner this class is super simple.
This class is an easy GPA boost if you can write essays. The professor has an inflated ego and often self-promotes, but the workload is manageable. Unstuckstudy AI was a lifesaver for essay prep.
As someone interested in psychedelic mystical experiences, I took his REL 301 course and absolutely loved it. As a person and professor, he inspired me to be curious. He is not difficult with essay grading. He was also kind enough to come lecture for my club, The Psychedelics Club at ASU, and give an incredibly thoughtful speech. Wonderful person!
Work is simple. I had one miscommunication with him early on but moved on as it made not much of a difference. He takes a long time to grade and posts tons on the last day. Whenever I have communicated with him It is never clear or respectful it always seems condescending and rude! Don't expect help if you communicate with him.
This class was AWFUL. He grades based on how much he likes you, not your work. He doesn't read your papers; he goes based on Turnitin. I hated this class because of him, not because of the content. There are 6 essays for points. That's it. I got a 100%, and he only gives an A+ if you get a 101. He likes to put in 0's and make you redo your paper.
As someone who hates writing, the three-paged papers were fine. He was weird with structure and read his instructions or he would give you a 0. I was hoping to learn more about other religions other than mine, but it was only about Christianity and only one essay on a different religion. Easy A class though!
Lectures, reading and assignments were interesting and engaging.
Easy class overall, 3 page essay for all 6 assignments no exams or quizzes easy HU credit and ez 100 if you follow the rubric didn't read the book and still got a 100
So Prof Barfoot is a real expert in his field. He has so much experience and knowledge and I found his video lectures fascinating. The entire class is graded on like 6 papers, so follow the instructions closely and you'll be fine. Only drawback: Feedback was pretty minimal. Protip- you can find a pdf of the textbook online ;)
I dont even think he reads the papers. Took a session B class, had 6 papers. Only really cares about having a large number of citations and that your video lecture paragraph is at the end(he literally gave me points off saying he 'didn't see it' because it wasn't at the end). Gives almost zero feedback.
I was worried since I'd been out of school for awhile and took English 101 and 102 a long time ago. But, I was able to write good papers and receive a good grade. He gives you the chance to redo an assignment if you don't do it right, which I 100% appreciate. There is no final and no quizzes which was awesome! Take him, you will be fine!
Class consisted of 5 modules. Grading was only over 5 papers due each week. Papers were all 3 pages in length except for the 5th one was 4-5 pages. His lectures are fine, I just think he's full of himself. His grading is also fine, but be careful to not miss important info about certain religions, he hates that...
DO NOT TAKE HIM. The grading criteria is not clear. The rubric states 35 points for meeting expectations and full points for exceeding expectations, but does not include descriptions or further expectations. for an elective I put in a lot of work into his class and still never received full credit. doesn't respond to emails.
Assignments were slideshow presentations and the amount of lectures/readings was doable. Vague assignment instructions, so many people had questions at the beginning, and the tone of the prof's responses seemed annoyed. Not great considering the only way to access prof is by email since it's an online class. Subjective/vague grading criteria too.
Awful. Cannot have a decent conversation via email with this Professor. Short messages when you ask for things and extension with little to no explanation. He is not great with students who need extra assistance and will not give you the help that you need because of the lack of care. You can tell in his emails. Only responses, “Ok” really awful.
