Is willing to go the extra mile to help students succeed.
Very helpful. Grades based on points. You will always know where you stand.

great teacher. always willing to help
Intermediate II back in 1994, evil class, but Chuck was good.
Best professor ever, hands down.
nice guy, tough as nails.

A really nice guy and is willing to help you with anything you may need. But, I'm not gonna lie to you, the class requires a lot of work and studying. Tests are difficult but fair.
really nice guy, explains material very well, always willing to help students. but be prepared to do lots of work, but if you do the work it really pays off
He teaches well, but I found his tests were too hard. Most people did fine though. I did much better with Alex Gabbin.
good teacher, very helpful, and a fair grader, but tests are hard. he stresses continuous studying for class.
He is the best teacher I have had at JMU. The material can be difficult but he does a great job of explaining it. He is very helpful during his office hours. If you complete your homework for EVERY class, then you should get at least a B.
Awsome teacher. I liked him a lot. Not an easy class, but if you go to class and study, you will fair well.
Great guy. Tests are pretty tough, but if you go to class and study you will do fine. He really tries to help students understand, and he's really friendly. I am very glad I got to take him
Can be really nice to some students, however normally picks out one or two to pick on through out the semester. Known to go off on students for giving wrong answers in a very publically embarrassing and condescending way.
person that rated before me is obviously one of the idiots that deserves to be picked on for not picking able to understand this easy class. If you do homework, you will be fine...baril is great
Terrible teacher. Tests are unlike anything you do in class. He goes so slow in class that he never gets to the material. Is very condescending and mean when asking students questions in class. If you can, avoid him. Take Riordan.
Dr. Baril is one of my favorite professors. He is incredibly helpful and will do anything he can for you. He is always in his office and able to answer questions. Tests are hard, but it's to be expected. If he's mean to you, you're probably an idiot.
this is a tough class and theres no way around it. Exams are a little tricky but he's pretty fair about giving points on the problems. Great guy-i'd reccommend

Look, its a hard class. If you take it, take him. He makes your learn the material to do well in the class, its worth it. Tests are weighted so if you dont do so great on the first one, dont worry, you'll have plenty of chances to do better later in the semester.
Class is miserably boring, i hate how he talks like a vantrilaquist and randomly collects hw -- quizzes & tests are hard as well - not many good teachers for 241 but avoid him
AWESOME teacher! esp for those not interested or not good at acct, he tells it in layman's terms so anyone can understand the concepts, and his tests are so easy. hes so nice and approchable, and is more than willing to give extra help. i wish i could have him for all my acct classes!
Amazing Teacher! The best I've had at JMU. There are lots of areas to get points, and sure you have to do the homework, but its not very tedious and it really helps you learn. Great guy, get him if you can.
Wonderful guy. This was my second class with him, and I am so glad he is teaching 344 next semester! He doesn't make it easy, he teaches you what you really need to know.
Hard class, but great teacher. This class is only good for actg majors. Tests are really hard but he does give partial credit. Baril is very willing to help, just go to his office hours!
Yes this is a very hard corse -- but he is annoying with his vantriliquist face and hes very boring, the hw is BS and tests are hard, avoid
Best accounting teacher for 241, very straightforward and tests are exactly what you expect. Manageable A, HW quizes are a little annoying but keeps you going to class and doing hw. IF your not mature enough to handle criticism, dont take the course with him.
Great Professor! Explains things well, tests and quizzes are completely similar to the work done in class. Prepares you very well to understand the material. Gives points for doing homework. You must read the chapters ahead of time to understand the lectures. GREAT!
He was a great teacher, it was just difficult for me to grasp the concepts but he always was there to help. one word: mmmmmmmmmmkay?
So far my favorite professor at JMU. He made me realize that I really do love accounting. Test and quizzes are easy and very similar to what you do in class. No tricks. Do homework and keep up with material and it will be an easy A. Highly recommend!!

at first loved him, then began to hate him (hw quizzes...), but now i love him again. he really cares that the students really understand the material, you can tell he enjoys his work and cares about his job. the quizzes may be annoying, but they bump ur grade up.
he is an awesome professor... but i only recommend him if you have taken accounting in high school or if you are an accounting major. if youre just taking it to get by, take someone else. he gives hw quizzes, grades on accuracy not effort. hes very nice and helpful. just be sure to pay attention and put your nametag up, mmmmmmmmkay?
homework takes FOREVER! A hard class for me because his lectures are basically to go over the assigned homework. Doesn't teach in class before you do the homework. You have to do the homework and teach yourself and then come to class to check your answers...a terrible teaching style in my opinion..doesn't work well for me.I need to be taught first
Very good teacher, honestly tries to help students. His lectures seem long and pointless, but there is reasoning as he explains fundamentals. As long as you do the HW problems, and pay attention in class, you will do fine.
he's a good teacher that wants you to do well. i was a little thrown off my his method of giving hw first then teaching it, but that actually helps your understanding b/c you've actually prepared before class
I love Prof Baril! I took 241 before with a different teacher and I got a D but he made things so much easier and because he was so excited for Accounting, he got you excited. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. Just go to his office hours and ask for help. He's the nicest man ever! But he does drone on off the topic.
Acts like he wants to help you but is really just a big bully. Actually a short bully. He likes to pick on the weak students.
Chuck is the man. his beard is ridiculous and he gives coin flips to see whether or not to check homework. he's pretty good, but accounting just wasn't really for me. he has some ridiculous sayings, and is funny. I'd reccamend him, accounting just is a tough class.
Just do ur hw, come to class and u'll be fine. It doesn't take a genius to figure out accounting. Lectures are pointless; book shows u how to do everything. Random hw quizzes. Drops 1 quiz grade. Exams are cumulative; it's not bad. Avg grade might be a B. Baril's boring, but nice. Pay attention when he goes over hw. Project is easy
Very clear, interesting.
If you can't learn on your own, then don't take him or accounting. I prefer his hands off approach. It's accounting & pretty straight forward. Tests are fairly hard, but if you study the hw problems, you'll be fine. Random hw quizzes, so do hw and go to class
If it wasn't for this man, I would not have my BBA right now or be going to graduate school. I failed 344 the first time (only time in my life to get lower than a B- in a class) and then ended up with a B+ with Prof. Baril. For the intermediate accounting classes, he is the best the school has to offer. Save yourself and your GPA - take him!!!
This teacher does not help you. He expects you to know everything and is impossible to understand. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Please.
THE best professor in JMU. He truly cares about students to be successful.
Thought I paid for professors who actually taught me how to do the work, not me teaching myself. Flips dice to see if you have a hw quiz on a daily basis which is graded for correctness- so attendance a must. Likes to beat around the bush on explanations. Tests ridiculously hard- the final average was a 71 with no curve. you've been warned.
I am a fan of Baril..he demands hard work and will call out the class if he sees a lack of effort...is very helpful during his office hours
Chuck is a great professor and is very helpful when approached during office hours. Intermediate accounting requires alot of individual learning, and that holds true in this class. Learn as much as you can by yourself, and if you need help Chuck will be more than happy to help you. Exams are tough, but what do you expect, its intermediate.
He is soooo helpful its ridiculous. Its intermediate part 2 so of course its going to be a challenge but he loves to teach and will do anything in his power to help you understand. Take him!! Great great guy
Intermediate is hard in general... there is no way around that. He's a pretty decent teacher and good guy though, but be prepared to study for days for every exam and you'll do fine. Exams are 2.5 hours long... prepare yourself.
Dr. baril is awesome. Do the chapter reading before class, there not bad and pretty short. Also do not miss a class. if you have done the reading he clears everything up in the lecture and do the home work. This class does not take a lot of effort to get an A. I would recommend him if you have to take accounting
boring. so boring to listen to but great guy. will always help u out at office hours. dont miss a class because u always have hw that can possibly be collected. hated going to class but its worth it. tests r fair. i hate accounting but he made it kinda make sense
I took Chuck as my second time repeating accounting because my 1st prof (Ferguson) was terrible. Chuck however is awesome. He is very organized and you have to be with accounting. His tests are very fair but you have to study! His HW is vital to you learning. If you do the HW you are golden. He is great!
He's an excellent prof. Makes u work like crazy, but is crystal clear when explaining. Loves being asked Qs.Extremely helpful during office hrs.Do assigned HW to the best of ur capability and he'll explain things clearly the next class.u'll waste time if u go to class w/o studying. If u r a hardworking student, albeit an avg student, u'll get A.
Look, intermediate accounting is gonna be hard no matter who you have. Baril, however, is the best there is. He will offer help in office hours, give a lot of partial credit on problems from exams, and offers some extra credit. He's also the nicest guy too... just don't slack off in class, he WILL call you out.
Intermediate and Accounting is hard in general at JMU. Baril is the best there is. He is always willing to help in office hours. The class is very difficult but Baril does his best to help you. I was 3 points away from a B- and he still gave it to me. Take him for intermediate!!!
Intermediate is a hard class, but he makes it worse. One of the worst teachers I have had at JMU. Although he is helpful, he has a condescending demeanor about himself. He does not teach the material - only goes over the homework. You will have to teach yourself everything and his tests/quizzes are unreasonably difficult and nothing like homework.
Chuck was a great teacher, def made accounting easy, not saying his class is a breeze but he makes sure you understand the material. you roll a dice to see if you collect hw so do your hw. the hw actually is what keeps you from failing because you need to do it to understand the material tests are fair, take him for accounting
He is good at keeping the class spirit high, and always has some funny story about drinking to tell you. However, intermediate accounting is a difficult subject. The hardest part about this class is how fast it moves. Also, his exams and quizzes are NOTHING like anything you've ever done up to the point when you take them. Unfair.
I really enjoyed Baril's class. You do have to kinda teach yourself everything first, but then in the next class he'll go over the chapter and answer all your questions. You definitely need to do the homework and go to class or you're not going to do well. Stay on top of it and you'll do well.
He's an awesome professor. There are three tests (1st worth 50, 2nd worth 70, 3rd and final are both worth 100). More than willing to help, but you must read the chapter and do the homework before class even if he doesn't collect it. Don't slack off in class, he will call you out but it's funny. I'm an accounting major and I hope I have him again!
From what I've heard, Chuck is the better 241 professor to take. You have to be prepared for class every day and teach yourself the material, then he reviews it. Tests are fair but sometimes tricky, and his grading scale is skewed in our favor
Tests are insanely difficult, obviously, as it's intermediate. Prepare to see a test like you've never seen before. He teaches by talking about the concepts in a conversational way in class. Did not touch a piece of chalk all semester, so if you like to see examples done for you, do not take him. Positive and cheerful.
Class is Hard. Test are Hard. Expect to teach yourself everything. If you need help go to his office, more useful and helpful there. does nothing but go over homework in class that's it
Class is hard as are the test. if you need help go to his office hours. does nothing in class but go over the homework. be prepared to teach yourself how to do everything. however of the 343 professors he is the better choice
Dr. Baril is the best professor in College of Business. Intermediate accounting is not a jock. You have to study and work hard the entire semester. However, Dr. Baril makes the class interesting. He is so helpful when you go to his office. He cares about his students.
Chuck is a great professor. He has a passion for what he teaches and will work with you to help you succeed in his class. Tests are not easy, but if you prepare for them and study then you will do fine.
Baril is an AMAZING professor! 241 is hard regardless of who teaches it, but Baril makes it interesting. You can tell he loves teaching and I feel like he actually cares about his students' success. Tests are difficult, but doing your homework helps a LOT! Highly recommend Professor Baril.
Tough class regardless but I think Professor Baril makes it harder than it should be. If you do not read the textbook and do the HW before class expect to learn nothing. 3 tests, one of which is final comprehensive. Couple quizzes and graded HW collected randomly. One easy group project.
He is the best intermediate teacher among the three. He actually explains stuff and teach you during class. Tests are challenging but he clearly explains what will be on the tests. Office hours are extremely helpful and he really cares about his students. Take him!
Hard class regardless of teacher. You also have to teach yourself pretty much all of the material through the textbook. Good thing about Baril is he tells you what the short answer test questions will be on. Attendance is pretty unnecessary except that he sometimes collects homework. Teach yourself, don't expect to learn in class.
Legitimately one of the best professors I have had here. I got a 66 on the final the first time I took this class and a 90 when I took it with him, speaks for itself
Not an easy class but Baril knows how to teach well. I never seem to be remembered by teachers but he knew who I was instantly and will help you succeed. I recommend him for sure.
He doesn''t know how to teach so that one understands and that''s bad in financial accounting. The only people I know who did well in this class were those that were already familiar with accounting. Prepare to teach yourself.
Hard if you're going into the class with no previous knowledge. Summarizes information AFTER you teach it to yourself. Doesn't care about students well being at all, which makes you question why he is a teacher, but is knowledgeable on the topic. Work hard and pull a B.
Intermediate II is a difficult class no matter who you take it with. Dr. Baril is very clear about his expectations with the material. He will create challenging questions that are not exactly similar to the textbook questions so pay close attention to his quizzes for the tests. He is very fair with grading and usually gives partial credit.
Tough class. You MUST do the homework if you want to learn. He is VERY helpful and begs for you to use him as a resource. He is very clear and prepares you well for tests.
Baril is honestly the best for both 343 and 344. Homework is collected randomly, 2 exams and the final, one group project, and about 3 quizzes will make up your entire grade. You must put in the effort to want to learn the material or else you will fail the class. You CANNOT cram for an exam and expect to pass. Use his office hours wisely.
Such a tough class regardless, keep up with the class if you fall behind you are screwed. Im retaking the class this semester, because he is a good teacher but I still couldn't pass
Put in effort and you will do well in this class. Rolls a dice to see if he will collect homework that day. 3 tests and a final with a quiz between each tests. Quizzes prepare you well for the tests. Tests are mostly multiple choice. Office hours are very helpful and he gives an opportunity for extra credit. Definitely would recommend this teacher.
Look, 343 & 344 are tough and that's that. But Baril is the man. Don't be lazy and fall behind and you can actually learn a lot in this class. He is always there for you if you need help. Pay attention in his class or he will not have sympathy for you.
GREAT teacher! I struggled for the first test, but I went to office hours and he's the first teacher who I felt genuinely cared about how well I did in the class. He is ALWAYS wanting to help, but tests were tough. Meeting him once a week helped for the rest of the course immensely. He's a great guy, definitely definitely take him.
344 with Professor Baril was fun and easy: said no one ever. 343 and 344 are hard work and require a lot of self-teaching, and that is just how it is. Do the homework and read read read because it will pay off. To be successful in intermediate accounting requires discipline and initiative. Baril does care and wants you to succeed
Professor Baril was the best. I failed 241 the first time BAD and when I took it with him, I got an A. He makes a point of remembering everyones names and he really knows his stuff. Sometimes he gets a little confusing but if you ask him, he will clearly explain himself! Love him.
Chuck is the man. Do the assigned homework, read the textbook and you'll be fine.
