He doesn't give much homework, so you have to do the optional problems in the book to succeed. The exams are worth most of your grade and he doesn't give much time on them. (About 50 minutes to do 10 pages of mostly short and long response questions) He runs through the lectures quickly and expects you to know a lot before lecture. Don't take!
Prof Barrows is an amazing teacher! He goes into depth during lectures and provides a lot of relatable examples to remember the content by. He is also hilarious and makes lectures way more bearable. The class is test heavy, and tests are mainly free response, so studying and doing well on them is key. They aren't hard if you put in the effort.
A great professor with a sense of humor that makes lectures more bearable. However, as bearable as they are, many key topics must be learned from the textbook! Be prepared to put in work, and be sure to take advantage of his worksheets (do them twice). Think outside the box for his exams. If you're conscientious and intelligent, you'll succeed!
Dr. Barrows is very organized and explains things very well. He is passionate about chemistry and enjoys teaching. Much better than my Chem 142 professor. His exams are tough but extremely similar to the practice exam.
His lectures are engaging and he explains difficult concepts really well! Hes also just a really cool person and fun to talk to.
Professor Barrows is amazing!! Chem 152 is a tough class, and he makes it easier by explaining concepts thoroughly. Recommend 100%. Hes a very chill and funny guy who is passionate about chemistry. His practice tests are very similar to the actual exams.
Dr. Barrows is definitely one of the better professors for the gen chem series. His lectures are mostly easy to follow and the worksheets he provides for quiz section are great for reviewing and remembering content. As an added plus, he writes a practice for every exam that's almost a carbon copy of the exam itself, which needless to say is dope.
Dr. Barrows is one of the better professors I had for gen chem series. His lectures are really clear easy to follow. He provides worksheets and practice exams that are great for reviewing and remembering the content. He writes a practice for every exam that's almost a copy of the exam itself which is really helpful for practicing.
Very nice guy, but his lectures are a little dry. This is unfortunate, because it's in your best interest to attend them. The midterms are kind of meant to prepare you for the final, and consequentially are much harder than the final; don't stress too hard if you do poorly on the midterms.
Passionate about chemistry and teaching, he seemed to truly care that his students were learning and he made his lectures worth attending. Make sure to know the ins and outs of the practice exams and you will do well on the midterms, they are extremely similar. I barely skidded through 142 and did exponentially better in 152, mostly due to Barrows.
Dr. Barrows is an amazing professor. He is funny, kind, and cares about his students. He thoroughly explains concepts and isnt hesitant to answer questions. You can understand concepts in his class instead of just memorizing. His tests can be tricky, but they mirror his practice tests almost perfectly and hell give all the partial credit he can.
Dr. Barrows was a good prof, but I've had better before. Barrows doesn't seem like he cares too much about the students and their performance but is a highly educated guy.
An amazing professor. He is one of the most enjoyable professor I've have ever had who had exciting and enjoyable lectures. His practice tests mirrored the actual tests to a tee which is very great. Would take him again if I could. Wish he was teaching CHEM 162.
Barrows is easily my favorite STEM prof I've had at UW so far. He really does care about every student this is apparent in his office hours. He gives every student who goes his undivided attention for as much time as he can. He's also really passionate about chemistry which made a subject I'm not super stoked about kinda interesting.
Amazing professor. Absolutely no surprises on tests, he gives you a practice test before every midterm that is EXACTLY like the real test. If you take your time, and understand the practice test completely, there is no reason you shouldn't do really well on the actual midterms/finals. Very funny and caring as well.
By far my favorite UW professor. Cares for his students, pushes them to excel and provides many opportunities to recieve feedback/help on class material. In class experiments really made this class one to remember, would definitely take him again !
He is an amazing professor. His tests are straightforward and have similar format of the practice exams. If you are confused, reach out to him because he will give you great feedback on how to excel on the course. Additionally, attend lectures as he simplifies complex ideas very well.
He's a lecturer, not a researcher, so he puts a lot of effort into designing the course. If you understand lecture/take notes, the book isn't necessary (but he does take some exam from the book). Exams are 40% MC & 60% written. No surprises on exams, but sometimes a few tricky questions. Fair grading. Definitely attend his office hours.
He is so funny and gives amazing lectures. Grades very harshly and has high standards but is very available outside of class. Occasionally can be rude but he tries very hard and can be understanding.
First and only time that I've actually been interested in chemistry here! Barrows is clearly passionate about his field and makes the lectures interesting for students that otherwise don't care about chemistry. He also starts class by spotlighting researchers in STEM fields that "aren't old, white, straight men," which was super inspirational.
Change your schedule to take his class. Highly recommended professor.
Prof. Barrows is the best professor Ive had at UW. Hes super funny and is never condescending no matter what type of question you ask. His lectures are so easy to understand, and I did way better in 152 than in 142. I love how his tests reflect the material he teaches, and are reasonable. He provides clear lecture slides and great examples too.
Ive gotta say I think Barrows is better than Craig. I took Craig for 142 and she was great but her tests were hard. Although Barrows gives you free response tests he gives you a lot of practice you can work on which makes the test feel so much less daunting. He makes his lectures fun and his office hours are really helpful. Such an amazing prof!
Prof Barrows is easily one of the most sought after profs for Chem 152. His teaching style is really interactive and he is hilarious. Don't skip class and don't take studying lightly. Work on the practice exams diligently and you'll be set on the exam (no surprises). He genuinely cares for his students. Note: silly errors do cost significant pts.
He's a bad prof and lectures are dull so you won't learn anything... Would def take a different professor next time...
Tests do not reflect the lectures hardly at all and require you to have mastered all the material taught over the quarter. Does not curve the class. Does not give good feedback. Worst class I took in my first two years of engineering.
Worst class I took in my first two years of engineering. Tests were ridiculous and required you to have mastered the material beyond what was taught in class or homework. The class was uncurved as were the tests. There are plenty of fantastic profs in the Chemistry department, take from them instead.
Hes a really fun guy which makes lectures entertaining. Im definitely learning something and CHEM152 is a difficult class. However, his quizzes are literally IMPOSSIBLE and Im not exaggerating. The class fails them every week and yet nothing changes . He expects you to be able to solve problems WAY harder than you learn in class. Good Luck.
You learn a lot, the lectures are informative, but everything he provides you with for studying still might not be enough for the test. There is usually a question in there that you weren't taught how to solve. Quizzes are worth 63% of the grade, and graded harshly. Take someone else. I might fail despite all the time I dedicate to this class.
Be careful with this class. His worksheets and practice problems do not reflect the quizzes, so you definitely have to know the information above and beyond to do well. He doesnt even teach lectures anymore, all of the lectures are from past teachers and the most recent ones are not helpful AT ALL. Be prepared to basically teach yourself LMAOO
While I do not think the Professor Barrows is trying to make his students fail, I find that his class is too difficult and he teaches with the mindset that you as a student should be able to solve any problem that he can. There is a lot of holes in his teaching and tests are impossible because of that.
I know chemistry is a hard class, but Charles made it impossible. No amount of studying could prepare me for the quizzes. They are so hard and basically everyone fails. He tells us to put in more effort to succeed, but we are trying our best. He seems like a nice guy who knows chemistry well, but I overall I wouldn't recommend.
Prof Barrows is definitely a solid choice for a gen chem prof, especially online as he knows his technology like no other. His quizes have been difficult but he is responsive and accessible and always willing to help. he does his best to be entertaining and funny as well which is appreciated.
I read his previous reviews and signed up for this professor. It was very disappointing. Maybe he's better in person. The weekly quizzes are worth 63% of your grade and they're impossible. I have done the ALEKS, EOC problems gone to office hours and nothing really helped on the quizzes. They're impossible. He expects you to teach yourself also.
Prof Barrows is a good prof, and I have definitely learned a lot. BUT his quizzes are impossible. I do about 2 hours of chem a day and have passed half of the quizzes, and gotten below a 40% on the rest. Quizzes are almost impossible and required SUPER deep understanding of the content to even have a chance.
I really enjoyed the way class was set up into pre recored lectures and then a synchronous office hours. He was really helpful during office hours and although office hours aren't required you should watch them. He is clear on what will be on the test but they are not the easiest. As long as you do the reading, and homework you will do fine.
Barrows is a fun and interesting person to have as a professor, however his quizzes are cutthroat and will require you to read the text book, attend office hours, watch lectures and go above and beyond to have a grade above the median. Dont take the class unless you really need it for your major.
All of the bad reviews are true. Quizzes are IMPOSSIBLE, lecture vids are barely helpful for the quizzes, worksheets don't reflect what's on the quiz. I don't think the curve is going to be much help, I'll probably end up S/NS my grade. Seems sweet and humorous, but this class overall was depressing bc of the quizzes. Avoid if you can.
I took this class to get Barrow's amazing lectures, didn't even get them. AVOID THIS PROF! In person, he is much better but if you have him for a "flipped classroom" immediately transfer out. His grading system is awful. The chemistry was the easiest part of this class and despite understanding the material I will be getting a terrible grade.
Professor Barrows is a really good professor. He is very knowledgeable and approachable. It's apparent he's passionate about teaching. I will say that doing well in this class requires A LOT of effort as weekly quizzes make up the majority of your grade. If you do not want to be challenged and do not care about chemistry, do not take it with him.
Chemistry has never been very difficult for me but this quarter was different. The quizzes are very hard. Many times the quiz average has been below 50 percent. Nothing you can do about it though. I have learned a lot but one tiny error on a quiz and you go from 90 percent on the quiz to 30 percent.
I did everything, every office hour, every session, every textbook problem and worksheet, all the notes. Literally everything, put this class on a pedestal and neglected my other classes to study. The issue is that the quizzes are torment, make making me literally rethink my life. Unless you're some kind of magical genius, his class is very hard.
Charlie is very condescending and somewhat disrespectful to his students. His tests are random with no rhyme or reason to them. He can be helpful at times but his attitude after getting criticism is messy. His test are unpredictable and I have never struggled more in a course. Take this with a grain of salt cause I am very angry at the moment.
I literally spent HOURS (4-5) PER DAY doing chem, attended every single office hour including multiple TA office hours from day 1. Yet, when quizzes come along, theyre so random and unpredictable that I feel like I spent so much time for nothing. The prof also does not realize how important a few points are to our grades. Hard class. Good luck!
Chem 152 is not a class (most) UW students take for fun. We have to dedicate a crap ton of time to try and understand chem to get into our major, future career, etc. I feel like the professors vibe is that if you learned something, the course was successful. To students, this is the problem. Quizzes were lacking, grades werent deemed important.
If you are gonna take this class I suggest you dont take this man Charlie has caused emotional distress that is beyond repair and he doesnt care hes the type thatll let you dangle off a bridge about to fall and tell you to move on so avoid him at all costs for the sake of your mental health and GPA
Has an attitude problem, is passive aggressive, and very condescending towards students. He also downplays our quiz scores and tells us to "move on" even though quizzes accounted for 63% of the grade. At the start of the quarter, he hyped up "flipping" the classroom, which meant were that 4 different profs would teach via asynchronous videos.
Barrows reinforces the fact that this is a weed out class. His all or nothing style grading, hardly padded by "show your work" partial credit that nets you back 10-20% back on a question worth 50% at most, are sure to cripple non-chem majors' GPAs. He constantly reassures us that there's no "GOTCHA!" type questions but then puts them on quizzes.
I would spend up to 15+ hours per week on this class, and do all the materials, watch all the lectures, but it wouldnt matter. His quizzes are borderline impossible, and would often test on topics that were only mentioned in OPTIONAL zoom sessions, and no where else. I strongly suggest you take a different professor if you want to succeed.
He gives lots of extra materials if you want to study more but not all of them reflect what's going to be on the quiz, the quizzes can be pretty harsh but I really like that for online school during rona season this is a flipped class so it's asynchronous and he give you a fair amount of time on each quiz
Everyone on this page needs to be a little nicer. This class is what you would expect from a weed-out STEM class and it is going to be difficult. Professor Barrows is a kind person and genuinely means well, most of these comments are just students that are mad they did poorly on a quiz. Most of the quiz averages are about 70% with a few exceptions.
Avoid this class online. Took this prof because of his lectures and most were not even his. Got even harder when they "took the training wheels off" after unit 1. Went into the quarter discouraged from 142, came out of this course even more discouraged due to the impossible quizzes and sore attitude.
Quizzes have nearly no correlation to the material we learn in class. Online lectures are not even given by the Professor. Shows his frustration towards students who aim to understand why they loose points on exams. Claims quizzes are "low stakes" although they comprise 63% of the grade. Maybe decent normally but definitely avoid for online.
I genuinely believe that the tests were made by pulling concepts out of a hat. They tested mainly on obscure and very specific topics and were extremely difficult. At least a third of material is not even alluded to in lecture, but makes up the majority of tests. The worst professor I have ever had. AVOID HIM!
Passive aggressive for no reason. Seems to get irritated when students have concerns about grading, proceeding to announce to the class to move on and that it is not worth his time to consider questions even though its literally his job. Quizzes tricky AND timed! If u like teaching yourself, condescending vibes, or sloppy joes, good luck
"Easy quizzes are low stakes" They're super hard and make up your entire grade. Condescending about extra credit saying to earn the regular credit, but it's impossible to earn. You have to sell your soul to do good in this class. ALEKS, Labs, discussions, lectures, textbook readings, practice problems, office hours, "optional" sessions, its too much
This class ruined chemistry for me. The way this professor made his students feel distracted from the actual learning, always tried to make "got you" questions on weekly quizzes. Attend the "optional" zoom meetings to barely pass. This professor needs to work on showing more compassion and assuming the best in his students. Sad way to end 152..
Awful professor. I get that this is a pandemic and everything, but its ridiculous to have a professor that puts in zero effort, can hardly be bothered to grade assignments in any sort of timely fashion, and is so flippant and sarcastic in his comments that it is outright mean. Meanwhile if you slip up once good luck get getting a decent GPA.
Tests are completely different than the worksheets assigned in class. Lectures were taught by multiple different professors so there was no consistency.
CHEM 152 is the same difficulty as CHEM 142 and Barrows class held a tough grading system, disguised as lenient but at the end of the quarter its clear your grade is entirely dependent on the dreaded weekly quizzes. Working hard on ALEKS, labs, and other homework every day barely affected my grade (just like 142).
Mr. Borrows is an enjoyable person and a difficult professor. His weekly quizzes were stressful but he allowed partial credit which was extremely nice. He expects you to be able to fully apply all of the concepts learned in tests. They are not easy, but doing as much practice as possible helps! Overall nice prof
Great guy that loves the material he teaches. However, I found this course extremely difficult due to the several professors and lecturers that switch every week. Essentially, he doesn't actually teach you the class and there is no inconsistency. The exams are also extremely hard but not impossible. There is almost always a curveball on every test.
He had a weekly quiz with partial credit, but a lot of the questions were not even remotely similar to the material he gave us to prepare with. He also routinely sent out announcements that sometimes seemed rude and not very supportive towards struggling students.
Prof Barrows was most likely a great in-person prof. However, since we went online, CHEM 152 became a "flipped class." Lectures were given by different professors with no consistency. The weekly quizzes were too difficult compared to the lectures. Showing up to office hours was necessary to do well. Prof Barrows did not live up to his expectations.
He is extremely passive aggressive and seems to be annoyed if you go to him for questions. It is really a shame, I was highly recommended to take him by past students and I unfortunately cannot do the same. Very misleading and ruined my grade point average. I recommend anybody but him.
His weekly quizzes were unbelievably harder than anything taught in class, and we were never given a real chance at redemption (the "final" only had 3 questions on it). He is a friendly guy but it is clear that he does not understand how to alter his teaching to match what he expects on quizzes. Most of the class failed them every week.
Sent very aggressive emails, quizzes were full of gotcha questions, reverse lecturing system full of different professors presenting slides that were never very informative or helpful, overall not the worst since it was an online class but definitely significantly harder than it should have been.
I had heard good things about this professor, but they were during non-covid times. He definitely wasn't able to successfully teach this already intensive course in an online setting. And the quizzes were definitely much harder than what was taught in lecture, which meant you HAD to read the textbook. Also, he came off as non-caring to his students
Here to give my late review now that it isn't restricted! Don't take him, he's kinda rude and irrational when it came to putting material on tests. Take literally anyone else for 152. Was very condescending through email. Not approachable either.
Professor didn't care, about what students did, had useless lecture videos that overlapped that had nothing to do with what we were supposed to be tested on, was very rude, and was unwilling to change at all.
The lectures are useless and have nothing to do with exams
Does not care about teaching
Don't trust him when he said that he's not trying to weed you out.
Professor Barrows shows that he cares that his students are learning. He gives a good amount of practice and prep problems that are similar to midterm problems.
he's a nice guy who is clearly passionate about chemistry. however, his tests are graded harshly because it is all multiple choice and 20 questions. if you miss one, that's -5%. he also assigns a lot of midterms, one literally being the Friday of dead week. overall, he is helpful and his lectures are not necessary. would recommend.
He's clearly passionate about chem & keeps lectures engaging w/ witty remarks. Claims it's not a weed-out, but sure feels like one. No curve, no extra credit. Ever. But provides much more support material & resources compared to other profs, like worksheets, fill in the blank notes, & practice exams. Watch the lectures & do LOTS of practice.
Dr. Barrows is very passionate about chem and that really helps a lot when asking questions. Overall he is a good professor but the midterms are very difficult and not much like the practice exams. The Aleks homework makes me want to throw my computer out the window but it actually does help.
He's a really good guy and seems to care about students. There is a lot of support and material that he gives out. His tests require you to think on the fly and sometimes have some tricks to them which doesn't make it easy but it's doable if you study and run through the textbook practice problems a lot. Hard if you haven't taken AP chem in hs.
A lot of tests but they're all multiple-choice and relatively easy if you study the material accordingly. He's a passionate professor and it makes his class so much fun despite how difficult it is.
Dr Barrows was great for 142. He explained all the concepts really well. While there is a lot of Aleks, it does help to do it. He has 4 midterms in the quarter, so be prepared for those every 2 weeks. My TA was not great, but I was still able to understand all the concepts from lectures. He is very funny and makes his lectures entertaining.
Hard subject so you can't really win with professors but Barrows makes it pretty manageable. His tests are pretty similar to the practice tests he uses. Don't fall behind on ALEKS, do the discussion worksheets, and study the practice tests and you should be fine. He makes himself accessible by doing Work it out Wednesdays and office hours.
Barrows is a great professor and creates an inclusive environment in his classes--feel free to raise your hand during the lecture or go to his office hours while you're at it. It's a very clear and straightforward class that requires you to be active. His worksheets and reviews are similar to the exam. Just do them daily and you'll be fine :)
Barrows is an amazing professor that provides an inclusive environment and a lot of supplemental study work. His tests are tough because they will punish you if you don't study. Don't expect this to be a highschool class, this is something you're going to have to work for! Barrows makes a great pathway for this though.
He seems like a really nice guy, and he did make lectures decently entertaining, despite the boring material. Not a fan of the test structure, one every other week and only 20 questions so they're weighted pretty heavily. He also does not curve, despite not-great test averages. I would still probably take again though.
Dr. Barrows was an amazing professor. I loved his teaching style and his tests were always so on point with the topics we've learned in class. He is not a tough grader at all. If you study and just do the suggested questions he puts out for us, the exam won't be difficult at all. Loved 142 with him and looking forward to 152.
Dr. Barrows is a great teacher that taught the content clearly and I learned so much. You must understand all parts of the chapter to do good on the exams. Expect questions that still relate to the content, but require you to think outside of the box on exams. The class isn't easy but you have all the resources to do well if you put in the work.
Clearly cares about what he does and genuinely wants to see students do well. He won't baby you and you need to put in the work but overall a really solid class.
Very steadfast about the course content, but a great lecturer and definitely the type of professor you want to have in a weed out course like CHEM 142.
Barrows is the definition of a weed out professor. UW likes to force as many students through chemistry as possible, even if it doesn't pertain to your specific area of study. Barrows himself is a nice and I'd even say funny guy at times. That doesn't mean he cares about you though. Be prepared to focus from day 1 if you want to be successful.
If you're registering for Chem142, take Barrows! He gives great lectures, is readily available, and provides SO many resources to study with/practice the course content (ie. worksheet packets/guided lecture notes/PRACTICE EXAMS). However, the class is not a breeze. Apply yourself, study, and take advantage of all the resources he provides.
I was initially scared because of all of his other reviews, but Barrows in person is amazing! He puts memes everywhere, and has very structured notes. If you: - FIND A DEDICATED STUDY BUDDY!!! - Finish ALEKS early - Do practice tests - Do worksheets if you finished everything else - Ask for help with labs at WIOW You should score at least a 3.5!
I got Prof. Barrows as an accident, but I am sure happy about it. His style of teaching is very straight forward and there are a LOT of resources if you get stuck on a concept. Don't fall behind on homework or labs (lots of points) and there are a lot of tests in this class. There are 4 midterms and a final; he makes very good practice tests.
His lectures are extremely straightforward and helpful, as long as you follow along with his note organizers you will understand everything. He also provides so many sources of practice and a practice midterm that is so helpful. ALEKS can be annoying but very doable if you manage your time well.
I really enjoyed CHEM 142 with Dr. Barrows. His lectures were engaging, and there were always recordings available in case you missed them. The class was organized and the grading process was clear. It is clear that he cares about what he is teaching and that he wants his students to understand the material. Overall, I had a great experience.
Be prepared for lots of homework. ALEKS is hell, but can save your grade (20% of the class grade). Overall really funny professor and seems genuinely passionate about what he teaches. Midterms are hard, but learn to study more and your grades will improve. Fair grading policies too.
Professor Barrows was a good professor! He's funny and does a good job of explaining the concepts in class. If you need help, ask for it! It's better to ask for help than *think* you understand something you don't really. The labs are interesting and there are lots of tests, but it's so that you aren't tested on too many things at once.
Great professor, overall. If you skip lectures however, expect a delay in your learning. Get ahead on your aleks HW because it may take you awhile.
Dr. Barrow's class is definitely a weed out and is fast paced. That said he does a good job of making expectations clear and lectures fun. He's a cool person who highlights lesser known scientists from many minority groups every class. The ALEKs are a pain but very helpful if you manage your time correctly.
Chem with barrows was definitely challenging, but the gen chem series is an overall weedout so nothing unexpected. For the most part, tests were pretty similar to the practice tests so if you studied, there wasn't much of a problem. ALEKS definitely takes a long time but you basically learn the content through it so it's worth.
I tend to struggle with chemistry in general but Dr. Barrows made the class more bearable for me with detailed guided notes and examples. Aleks was definitely a lot at times but it did help reinforce topics as long as you're taking your time with it through the entire week.
Barrows does a lot to make our lives easier in a class that is meant to weed us out. His practice tests are so much like the real exams that you go into the tests feeling really good. ALEKS is a lot of work but he gives you plenty of time. He is a chill guy that answers questions just be ready to study.
Really hard class, but he provides plenty of resources for you to succeed
Professor Barrows is an amazing instructor. His practice midterms that he posts are really close to the real midterms, which is fantastic. Make sure you understand what you are going to do in lab before you get there. Also, make sure to link your lab reports correctly, doing this wrong can deduct many points off your lab report grade.
Initially, I wasn't sure if professor Barrow would be a good teacher or not based on his negative review. But he completely exceeded my expectation in both the quality that he put in his lecture in addition to how much he cared about the student. I swear to god that my grade in chem wouldn't be as good if he wasn't my professor.
Prof Barrows is truly a great teacher. From fantastic lectures to straightforward exams that don't try to trip you up or test you on unknown material, there is admittedly a larger workload but he made it far easier to succeed in what is typically dubbed a weedout class. Watch out for minor errors on lab reports, do practice exams, and GO TO LECTURE
Dr. Barrows is great and I learned a lot in his class. I hate chemistry and was never very good at it but I could understand almost every concept thanks to him.
I love prof. Barrows! Bad reviews almost scared me off but glad I took his class! He is funny and makes lectures fun and interesting, especially in 152. I learned a lot and he rlly cared about us and answered questions well. Rlly accessible outside of class with good grading policies. Hard class but not bad if you put in work, ask Qs, & study!
I thought Dr. Barrows was a really great Professor who cared a lot about his students. Although this was a 'weed out' course I thought he taught it very well. If you put in the work for the course, then you should receive a good grade, just be ready to put in that work. He also provides a lot of resources in case you need them.
Professor Barrows is a fantastic professor! Going into a "weed out" course is something students dread, but he does a fabulous job at making sure it is the opposite of a "weed out" class. There is quite a bit of homework, but the course itself regarding lectures and exams is manageable. He is super understanding and truly cares about his students!
Dr. Barrows is a caring professor. He provides resources for his students like note packages, practice midterms (similar to real ones), a worksheet notebook with answer key, Work-it-out-Wednesdays in addition to his office hours, and recordings of lectures. He acknowledges that he can be intimidating/ has an RBF but in reality, is helpful.
I took 142 with him and liked his notes and teaching style so I decided to take 152 with him again. But, I regret it so bad now. He suddenly changed his lectures to async and I hate it. There was a reason why I took a gap year during COVID times. Also, his tests were all MP but students voted for short answers so his tests are so much harder now.
Great lecturer, funny, and cares a lot about the students. He's good at explaining complex topics and showing you how to work through the problems. His quizzes and final are easy if you do literally any of the HW/practice problems and lecture-they are also identical to his practice tests. I wish I took him for 152, the other profs are so much worse
He was amazing for 142. He has solid lectures and it very upfront with expectations. But 152 is hell. He decided to drop a midterm for a three midterm, one final quarter. We're week 5 into the quarter and just starting our first exam. He switched to asynchronous lectures, which he manages terribly. Would definitely suggest for 142, though.
Genuinely cares about giving you the resources and instruction you need to succeed and learn. His tests were always fair and all multiple choice. His class canvas page was made super well and there were many resources for you to do well in the class.
- Pleasant class atmosphere - Helpful note packs and worksheets - Humorous - Fun memes
He was alright, he had good lectures, I have heard he moved away from that for 152. His tests were extremely difficult with missing one problem taking off 5 percent from the whole test, and 5 tests was too much. Overall, a good lecturer however he has some problems with how he treats the kids in his class, he did not treat me like a human being.
Barrows was a good prof for 142. Overall, the course wasn't extremely difficult, but there were a few things about his class that were not ideal. He had 5 tests, one of which was 5 days before the final. He also isn't the best at explaining concepts. That being said, his practice test/questions are the SAME as the actual tests. He's also very nice!
Take a different professor. Trust me, my closest friends advised me to take him for 152 and he completely changed his structure of teaching. Take him for 142, a huge GPA boost, but do not if you aren't someone who can master the material after one lecture.
Barrows is great for Gen Chem at UW. Despite people complaining about the midterms, I believe that Barrows truly cares for his students and wants them to succeed, something you rarely see in weedout classes at UW. Midterms can be confusing, but as long as you keep up and study the material, you can do well. Provides students with amazing notes too!
Barrows is VERY knowledgeable and provides LOTS of resources to study by (guided notes/practice exams/worksheet packets). The only thing I didn't love about this quarter is the way he scheduled midterms. We learned the last unit in abt a week. Also, we had three midterms, one of which we took on a Friday, two days before the final on Monday.
I liked the way he structured his lectures, in general a very approachable professor when it comes to asking questions during office hours or after lectures.
This course was much more difficult than CHEM 142 but there is a LOT of information taught. The tests were harsh and the class usually wasn't prepared for them. Class average for each of the exams were about 62% Prof. Barrows gave a lot of practice problems and examples to help us prepare for the labs/exams/HW. There was also a small curve.
His fill in the blank notes style didn't really work for me, but what really sucked was how difficult all the midterms were. We didn't have our first midterm until halfway through the quarter, and then he squeezed in two more midterms. The averages for these were around 50%-60% which was really rough.
Barrows had a phenomenal 142 class but in 152 he sort of overestimated our ability and made some very challenging tests. The material itself wasn't too hard but there was never enough time on tests besides the final. When studying for tests use ALL of the practice problems he provides, not just the practice test.
It is very clear that Dr. Barrows cares about what he is teaching and who he is teaching it to. Go in with questions. This is not an easy class and he really wants to make sure you understand the material, which means if you don't understand the material you will not do well on the tests.
Dr. Barrows is an amazing professor and I suspect that many people review bombed him during online learning. He's funny, caring, and relatable! He gives note packets so you can annotate and be engaged in class. He gives practice exams and is always clear of his learning expectations. He's a wonderful professor and person, please take him!
he provides lecture notes so that's great!!!
Barrows is a fantastic lecturer and my favorite professor at UW. On top of making lectures hilarious, he explains content in an easy to understand + engaging manner. The only complaint I have about the way he handled 152 was the scheduling; the placement of exams was extremely poor but he definitely fixed this for 162 after the feedback he received
i love him
He outlines the class very clearly and gives really good practice exam resources. I'm very glad I had him for 142 and 152. His explanations were very clear and thorough. I highly recommend him.
Tried to be kind and relate to us, and partly succeeded. He had fun memes and jokes. But was the opposite of supportive to any student who struggled with his specific format. He blamed us when a midterm average was 20% lower than normal, sent passive-aggressive emails, and didn't have time to discuss DRS accommodations or answer other questions.
Absolutely love him for the memes and his chapter packets, making textbook almost optional to use. He cares about teaching and is very organize. ALEKS is manageable as he does cut back on topics. But he covers more topics than other prof. Test can get pretty ridiculous even though the practice exam is similar to the actual exam.
He was nice enough to remove some Aleks modules, but as a professor he is mediocre at best. Rambles in lectures and aims to deceive students. Exams are aimed to make students fail and he expects students to do 90% of the teaching to themselves. I honestly don't know what purpose he serves.
Terrible professor, very useless tangents in class. It's practically an asynchronous class with a random guy yelling at you while you try to survive. Absolutely do NOT take this professor. Please, please, please take Professor Craig instead or an alternative if possible. The average on one of this guy's exams was a 40% one time.
I think Professor Barrows is truly a wonderful human. He is really funny and genuinely caring. However, his way of teaching is kind of a hit or miss. He lectures about the topics and gives lots of information, but hardly gives any examples of how to use this information. So, I had a hard time because of no examples shown in class
Makes students feel unwelcomed. Creates uncomfortable learning environment, wouldn't take him as he loves low averages.
He is the worst gen chem professor at this school. Take literally anyone else.
Took all 3 of the gen chem series with him (2022-2023). Barrows writes tough exams but he's a great dude at heart. I learned so much more in his classes than I would if I had an easier professor, but the difficult exams can be stressful. If you like silly jokes and trying for a deep understanding of the material, this is the prof for you.
Overall this class isn't very hard, however the grade scale is kinda against you, this is my 2nd time taking this class with Barrows and the first time I had about a 70% which was a 1.9. I wish his 2.0 was lower as that's the minimum for some degrees at UW, but overall not a bad class.
It is clear that Dr. Barrows is very passionate about chemistry, and he tries to make the lectures entertainable. He is very organized and makes fill-in-the-blank note packets, with so much information, you don't really have to read the textbook. The class is a lot of work, but Dr. Barrows is a great professor and really cares about the students.
CHEM 142 is a difficult class no matter which prof you have, but Dr. Barrows definitely tries to make the class more engaging and accessible!
Dr. Barrows was a great way to start the gen chem series. His class is tough, but he provides practice tests that are very similar to the midterm exams so you know what to expect. There is a heavy workload for this course, but it's not unreasonable. His lectures are interesting and he seems to want his students to succeed.
The class itself is difficult, but the multiple choice testing format helped, though the questions were tricky.
This class is insanely hard, I would recommend taking any other prof as they have much easier tests comparably. Exams have content never covered in class or other material, you have to rely on having a good TA if you want to pass. Lecture is basically useless, you learn everything through textbook/TA/ALEKS. Nice guy though, just a bad teacher.
You can tell that Dr. Barrows is very passionate about chemistry and wants to make the lectures engaging. I liked that he had fill-in-the-blank style notes for each chapter and provided many practice problems in notes, worksheets, and practice exams that mimicked real exam questions. The tests are multiple choice but can be tricky, so be careful!
I don't like chem but Barrows made it as good as it possibly could be. He's a great lecturer and truly cares about your learning- I had him for two quarters don't understand the negative reviews. Having had 3 other chem profs he is by FAR the best. His note packets make life so much easier and his many practice tests match the real one very well
This guy is the goat for Chem. Taking 142 he makes lectures engaging and fun. He explains topics really clearly and because of that he can cover lots of topics fast with you being able to comprehend them. His midterms can be a bit tricky but overall they are not hard. The course load is a bit rough but very doable.
Prof Barrows overall is a pretty good professor. I have taken both Craig and Barrows and their both great in their own ways. Both do have different teaching styles one does slides the other does fill in blank notes. You do need to put in efforts to learn and understand the material. Definitely ask for help, don't hesitate and study with others.
Barrows is a smart guy and a bad teacher. His notes fail to distinguish main ideas from side information, and he refuses to share his thought process during in-class practice problems. His tests don't test your understanding of a subject and instead reward those who can rote memorize formulas and petty details. The memes are only funny for so long.
Dr. Barrows's lectures were awesome! He includes memes and gives us a notes packet to fill out in class, which I loved. Attendance is optional, and there's some time to ask questions during lecture. His tests were a bit hard mathematically, but he provides TONS of practise problems - use them!! Def recommend, because he really cares abt teaching.
This course is not a weed out, there is one test, and that test is the weed out. The first test was beyond difficult for literally no reason. But besides that the course is not bad at all. A reason why the first test is harder is due to him teaching a flipped style for the buffers, titrations, and solubility chapter. And so the learning isn't great
All in all, this class compared to his CHEM 142 class was almost like a slap to the face. It was way harder because his tests were different than his CHEM 142 class. I believe that in this class, he wanted to incorporate our mastery of each topic by adding short response and calculations, so be aware of that. Rather than that, he's decent!
Dr. Barrows is a great professor, but his tests are very difficult. It is really important to spend time outside of class on the content, because lecture and worksheets are not enough. Although he is a hard professor, he gives students all the resources they need to succeed.
Way better for 142 than 152 in my opinion. I gave him a 4 previously, but after having a different professor for the final gen chem course I changed it to a 5. Really miss him!
I had professor barrows for the whole gen chem series, this guy is super passionate about chemistry and really want students to do well. He only ever curves up, never down. Chem 152 was very hard, but having him for 142 and 162 was great. Will really miss having him as a professor.
Fantastic lecturer and there are a lot of resources that can help you succeed like the practice midterms and discussion. that being said his tests are not easy, time intensive and the aleks is a big time commitment and due early in the day for some reason. His grading policy can be frustrating a lot too, but he follows clear, hackable patterns
Barrows is a good guy, but after having him and Prof. Craig (another gen chem prof at UW) I would still choose Craig. Entertaining lectures and notes to follow but everything seems surface level. Since his tests are multiple choice there is no partial credit which sucks. Knew people who never showed up to class and got the same grade as me.
Loved Dr. Barrows! While the course content was hard, the way he sets up lectures and taught it was very helpful. He gives out an insane amount of practise problems for studying too!! He's a little silly but it's not hard to keep up in class. Had him for 152, gonna miss him.
Overall, Professor Barrows was pretty good and gave good and detailed explanations of concepts. The class was pretty test heavy but the test format was reasonable. Doing practice tests and redoing lecture problems help. One downside is he is barely available outside of class hours.
Professor Barrows makes the lectures engaging, but his exams are no joke. Spend time outside of class studying the material and utilizing resources like the textbook, practice tests, and unstuck study to succeed. The workload is manageable if you put in the effort.
I miss Prof. Barrows. I wish he taught Chem 152 at UW still. He was godsend to the chem department, I hope he's thriving in an amazing atmosphere and I wish him the best! Thank you Barrows!
