DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS COURSES! He has no teaching ability, goes off on unexplainable tangents, and can not express himself in a coherent manner. Besides being good to look at he is useless.
This guy is useless,it takes him about 5 minutes to come up with a sentence. Not to mention he does not even talk about the course readings.
WHERE DO I START? HE IS JUST A TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. NEVER PREPARED FOR CLASS. ALWAYS OFF TOPIC AND HAS NEVER PUT TOGETHER ONE INTELLECTUAL THOUGHT. IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ANYTHING STAY AWAY FOR COURSES TAUGHT BY HIM.
He has knowledge of what he teaches however, he does not know how to present the course material in a structured and logical manner. He jumps from topic to topic, loves Freud and should of been a psychology professor instead. He's a hot x-football player
The WORST prof I've ever had. Completely disorganized, lectures are torture, and his exams/essays are ridiculous as he thinks his class is the only one students have. Doesn't answer emails or make an effort to help students at all. RUN WHILE YOU STILL CAN
Completely, totally disorganized. Smart guy in some ways, but useless as a teacher. Talks down to students, but doesn't realize it. If you're stuck in one of his courses, you basically have to teach it to yourself.

UGH. Talks about things which no one in the class cares about, such as his dog and football. Worst class I have ever had. His exams were 4-5 questions, and each was worth about 25marks. Nothing he did made any sense.
Cannot gather thoughts to form a complete sentence. Is all over the place showing up 45min to an hour late for tutorials. Totally unprepared to teach, not having any relevant material to discuss relating to the course.
Great prof. insightful, provactive, funny. I totally recommend this guy. Just know that you actually have to do work in his classes, i.e. read the material. Most haters are just lazy! And if you have questions ask!!!! If you didnt, thats YOUR fault!!!
Do not under-estimate this guy. He is getting more organized with each course he teachers, I have taken two with him. His professional work adds depth to his teaching, you have to get used to his sense of humour. Bottom line is he knows his stuff.
I had this guy and he had to raise people's test marks 14% and I just found out I have him for 2040!!!!!!
Lacks confidence, read's from notes (and not well). This is sometimes contradicted by bouts of extreme self praise about his phd.

This professor is a disgrace to teaching! He should not be a member of the York teaching staff! He made the course alot more difficult then it should have been and the TA had to reteach everything to make sense!

Had him last year.He was accommodating and extremely handsome.Students have a hard time because he's a bit obtuse and most undergrads (which included myself) are used to being spoon-fed.I wrote my papers the night before and got a B+ so he's not all bad.
He's late for virtually every class, including the midterm and exam with no apology. He reads directly out of the textbook for lectures that he clearly hasn't prepared for, and his exams have pointless questions on them.

I get more sleep in Battershill's class then I do at home in my own bed. The fact that I did not drop this course when I had the chance still confuses me. As of today his lecture consists of know more then 20 students. All of which derserve an A+ for staying throughtout the whole year.
Prof's like Battershill definitely make me regret my uni. career and the over priced sleep I get in his class. This guy has no idea what he's doing. Once again Professor Battershill has succeeded in driving students out of sociology. From constantly forgetting exam questions in his office or taking them off the website and letting us know, his 2040 class is an experience you really would like to forget ever happened!
The fact that some of his students swoon over him makes you sick. blanks out constantly and relives old "glory days" of football. His dog and football seem to be all he knows. Worst prof ever, Battershill makes sociology something you never want to touch ever again after living through his class
This prof. is always late by at least 30mins. Goes off on tangents, and never finishes sentences. Hard to stay focused listening to this guy.

I don't think even he knows what he's talkng about so how the hell are we suppose to know what he's trying to say, he doesn't answer our questions he says there are key concepts but doesn't say what they are and all he keeps saying is "there's links in the readings" and calls that a review for the mid term RUN IF YOU STILL CAN!

This has to be the worse professor i have ever had. He has no idea what he is talking about. i really don't care about his son and how he plays football or about his dog or Paris Hilton. He does teach you anything that is on your exams & you can't find the answers in the text book. He pulls everything out of thin air. NEVER enrol inany of his class
This prof is the absolute worst at york. He is horrendous in his teaching methods; wait HE HAS NO TEACHING METHOD. HE'S DISORGANIZED and RANDOM. Run as far as you can from this prof. I have no words to explain how horrible he is. You don't learn anything!
This guy is a great professor. Now, he might not be the easiest guy to understand. He is rather random in his thoughts. But I really do enjoy going to his class. He makes you think. As well, he's a great guy. You know he loves teaching and just wants to see you do well. I'd take another one of his courses.

I dont understand why students are giving him such a bad review! Although he wasnt that clear when he spoke, this professor was very helpful and catered to the students' needs. He was willing to give extensions,was not a hard marker, and to make matters better, is a good looking guy!!! Dont listen to these other reviews, hes a good guy.
Okay I came into this class hearing a lot of bad reviews about the prof, however he is not bad at all. I do agree, that his lectures may not be the best to learn from, however, if you keep up with the readings you will be fine. The essay was not bad at all, and the exams were lengthy but doable. He is willing to help out, and provides extensions.
I'm sure he's a very nice person, I hope he is because as a prof he is terrible. I dont care how easy he marks or how accomodating, he rambles, he's incoherent, his lectures and classes overall have no structure which make it impossible to turn in decent work. Worst teacher I have ever had. He is always late, emotional, reads directly from the text and is rude. He stares straight through students when their hand is up and pointedly ignores them. He's unorganized, has no structure for assignments and his feedback on said work is useless as he offers no constructive criticism, just biting one liners.
Awful...Just awful. I must say that this professor put a serious damper on my first impression of university. I don't think a man could be any more boring if they tried. He wouldn't be so bad if he actually made sense, but sadly he can't do that either. Oh it also helps to have a professor that can actually use a computer.
I LOVE this prof! His lectures are from the text, so you never have to step foot in the class (I've been twice all year), the exams are very reasonable, and the book is interesting. I want to have him again for 2nd year soc!! As long as you read the text, you'll do great! My fave class/prof!!

Once he starts lecturing he gets really boring and it gets hard to understand what he is trying to say, since he is really bad at connecting his thoughts. He cannot articulate at all and in the end it seems that his sentences don't make any sense. Moderate exams, questionable marking. He is a really COOL guy but he is a bad prof. What a shame...
Ok. Where to begin. I don't believe he likes to teach since he tells his students that he makes the same amount of money as a construction worker. He just seems really bitter about his job. He gets way too personal and, when lecturing, he has no clear flow of thought. He is a very hard person to grasp.
I thought he was one of my FAVOURITE, although his lecturing wasn't the best. The text and kit were the best course tools. However, if you needed an extension or another anything, he was very easy to approach, without giving you a problem or questioning you. He's a very cool prof and would DEFINITELY love to have him in the future!

First day he insults all by telling us we are not smart enough for this course, and then talks about how he was taking grad courses in his undergrad and that of course he grasped all the social theory we will be tackling in a short 2.5 month period that our summer course was. Very rude and arrogant

Tough call. Easy class, a bird course really. Teaches straight out of the book, tests using the test bank. BUT, I don't find his lectures engaging. Judging by what I've head and the comments on this board, people don't like him, but the way I look at it is if I get an A, who cares if it was uninspiring. It's first year soci guys!
He's very helpful if you take the time to ask questions. One of the few sociology professors I've had that doesn't just read off of powerpoint.
Tutorial attendance is mandatory; lecture attendance is totally optional. He's a mediocre prof, but tests straight out of the book so it's an easy class. I would take one of his classes for this very reason: He's predictable and since many people don't hit the books, the curve sits low. His class depends on you teaching yourself from the book.
Theory is one of the toughest Soci courses to get through. If you get Charles you should be happy! He is very passionate about theory and uses a lot of real life examples which make things interesting, especially since theory is so dry.
3600 he allows take homes for all the exams!! This prof rules!!
OH WOW! This guy is absolutely unbelievable. I don't know where to start, but going to lectures is seemingly pointless because he just babbles on and on and doesn't even put notes up for us to copy. Doesn't have notes or a lot of powerpoint to copy, however if you listen to what he talks about it's not hard to draw out course material. Poeple who are robots and can't think for themselves may have a hard time with this. This is my favorite class and I've learned a lot. He's a little strange but there's a lot to learn if yo open your ears.
At first I was a little skeptical about this prof in September, but after having him for a while, I wish I had him for all my classes. I love the way he teaches and makes it fun for me to come to class and it's theory. He doesn't use powerpoint, but you don't need them. He's overall a nice guy who I think wants his students to excel :)

At first it was confusing (and I never do the readings) and I would give up and sleep through his lectures. But one day I drank lots of coffee and I listened to his lecture...that's when I realized I was wrong about him and he actually makes sense of the theories which turned out to be pretty interesting. Just wish I had realized earlier.
I had this prof for 2040 and honestly, I'd take it over again. He's highly intelligent, and knowledgeable, and motivates you! He's helpful and understanding, and he's a fair marker!
Professor Charles is great as a first year SOCI Prof. It doesn't get any more basic. Just read the text, participate as much as you can and do the sample tests provided online from the textbook, you should have no problem doing well in this class.
Charles is a nice guy, but he is so hard to understand. His notes are all over the place and his lectures are unclear. I definitely do no recommend him for 2040 because of the content...you will die of boredom and confusion.
Funniest prof out of all my classes. Really nice and entertaining. Only bad thing is he doesnt post lecture notes and tends to ramble on. If you do the readings, write down everything he says in lecture you will be fine as i have recieved a B. It is a good first year class as well because it is interesting.
This professor although a little unorganized is extremely knowledgeable. I've had him for 2040 but also a 3rd year soc class. He is helpful and clear on exactly what he wants. He is also very flexible and generous in terms or submission dates for assignments. As long as you show up to his class and do the readings he is more than fair.

Best first year professor anyone could have ever asked for. He says it like it is & is really cool to talk to. He's helpful, lenient, and very easy to approach. I would definitely have a him again for another class at York U.
Please, avoid this professor and take the required theory course with someone else! He's very disorganized and unclear, and he has unrealistic expectations from second-year students in terms of both workload and ability to navigate the difficult readings and concepts. The TAs have to do all the real work!
Brutal prof. Lecture was a scattered mess of random info. Make sure you have a good TA because that's all that matters. He's extremely boring as well.
Took his soci 1010 class, his lectures are boring and he doesn't post anything on moodle, however if you copy all the slides and do your readings, and attend tutorials, you'll get a good mark, his exams are to the point, overall I would suggest taking his classes.

CB is basically the man, just show up to each class and he will highlight the important parts of each chapter, the course itself is pretty enlightening.
Extremely monotone and very hard to keep up with. He continuously jumps from one idea to another, then goes back to that first idea later on. The teaching style is horrible, especially for a class that is already complicated to begin with.

The title is misleading. This course is mostly about economics and business. However, the prof is very funny and considerate. Any troubles talk to him! He will give you the marks if he sees you trying. Only take this if your interested in the economy.
Awesome prof. Made classes fun and was considerate of everyone. Didn't push you to participate, counted on attendance as participation. Very easygoing and genuinely wants his students to succeed, so he does everything he can to make it happen.

Very, very hard to follow in lectures. You can skip lectures and go to tutorial and only read the one text book and get a B easy. Gives you most questions before exam.

Prof Battershill is very knowledgeable, passionate and entertaining to listen to. He is a great teacher and truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He is always available to help and does not pressure people to participate however you can see how much he appreciates it when they do. Excellent Prof.

Took him in summer and he is difficult at first since its hard to understand his humour and lectures, often very confusion and off topic. But he is a very chilled prof and gives a lot of time to finish the assignment. Expect homework and don't get confused, keep up with the readings and you will be good
Take his classes for an easy A. Awesome teacher if you just give him a chance. Really lenient towards handing in late assignments.
The course is a bit bland but go to class as he gives lots of helpful hints for the exams. If you participate and attend class you will get a decent grade.
This prof is definitely one of my favorites! He is just like a high-school teacher. He tells you exactly what will be on the exam and what sections of the book to study and what to skip. He also gives you the exam essay question so you can prepare at home and write on the exam. He is the best!Try to take it in the summer and there won't be grp work

Boring and monotone speaker. He likes to talk for 2 hours straight in his tutorials, don't expect much participation. He is way too awkward, I can't recount the amount of times when he asked a question and got no reply from the class mates. At one point in class he looked like he was going to crack down and start crying! He needs a long vacation.

took this class for my gen ed, BEST CLASS EVER. Learned a lot of interesting things, participation is mandatory part of your grade, but he is well-worth the effort to show up. One of my favorite professors of all time. Most under-rated prof ever! Most of the people who take his classes are a bunch of first-year crybabies .

His class would cost $400 alone on textbooks. He writes his PowerPoint in class during the lecture hour. Basically all the course material can be found online. I have never seen anyone in my class like this professor. Even the TAs hates him. Reading is confusing and heavy. His lectures made people more confused than before.
He retired now, but honestly looks like he should've retired years ago.
