Nice guy, but a lot of work
this guy has to be the easiest teacher at this school.quantity over quality
Easy class, a lot to remember - 'thank you for the quiz'
Real Easy but alot of work. Easy grader
It's easy, but it would be easier if he spoke clear English
Jesuits in Asia --A+ class if you read, and can write WELL.
nice guy ..easiest grader ever ...class is boring ..no attendance policy
Nicest teacher, writes chapter summaries for you! lots of quizzes but easy to do well in
gives a lot of easy assignments so if you dont do some you can make it up and still get an A. nice guy
No Comments
nicest, cutest Indian man ever. Gives a lot of work, you have to study for tests, but he grades everything really easy.
the cutest man alive!!!
easiest ever
VERY nice man, easy class, where u actually learn some interesting stuff without having to do much work.
Greatest class in the world... we watch videos everyday at the end of class, and the homework is a joke. Tests come right from the notes that HE GIVES YOU. Good teacher, take him.
SOO EASY! take him. Gives you notes, tests and quizzes right from notes!!! Very nice...TAKE THIS CLASS!
father is the best. he is the nicest guy and doesn't give much hwk. gives you an outline of every chapter. TAKE HIM
Father Borges is the CUTEST man alive. Funny and loves you if your outgoing. So hamrful. the best prof I have ever had. He's GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
If you can take this class, then def. do it!! Cutest man ever and loves to talk about India. Class goes by quick and he grades easy. Love to talk to him after class too b/c he really does care about his students-AWESOME GUY!!!
His upper-levels must be way diff. from 101. This class has not been interesting, or easy. The work load is light, but the quizes and readings are mind-numbing. Sweet prof, but the things you are asked to 'learn' are entirely trivial.****final.
Let me tell you something: He loves India. He's probably the nicest prof on campus. His quizzes and tests are right from his notes that he gives to you. a video at the end of every class.
Awesome and cute guy! Gives typed notes for each chapter and quizzes come right from them, and he loves the pictures in the book(that's the only reason i think we have the text). has a movie for the end of every single class. lots if little, easy hmwks that can bring up ur grade!
Father Borges is the most adorable and sweetest man ever! Class is a breeze...same thing every day: typed up notes that he hands out summarizing the chapter, followed by a short film. Extremely easy to get an A! TAKE IT!!
Boring, boring, boring. Fr. Borges is a sweetheart but his class is mind-numbing. Each class has handouts which you spend the rest of class reading. Quizes totally trivial material, so studying is pretty pointless. Keep quizes though, questions are reused for the tests.
A great man. The class is incredibly easy with tons of extra credit if you manage to screw it up. Tests cut and paste from quizzes. Quizzes trival info but relatively few points for total grade. Can be boring but an easy A.
easiest class ever. father borges is the man. tells the funniest jokes about India.
Awesome class. don't bother to read the text book cause he gives you all the notes in class. study the notes for the quiz and test and you will get at least a B. very interesting and great guy.
Great prof. Very helpfull and understanding of personal situations. I learned more from his class than any other religion prof. BECAUSE of his notes and adherence to them. Fr. Borges is an excellent prof., and should be regarded as such.
Fr. Borges was my least favorite teacher I've ever had in my entire life. He can be extremely rude and goes out of his way to embarass people. His class is relatively easy but there is a paper on a video due every class which is extremely annoying. Don't take this class if you want to learn anything at all.
The dumbest class Ive ever taken in my life.. if you like history at all dont take the class.. if you dont wanna do any work at all take it.. each class consists of him handing out notes on the chapter you were supposed to read the night before (which by the way dont read) and then watching a movie that you have to do a writeup on.. easy but boring
Father Borges is a great guy, and has an easy class. Do all "essays" and you will almost always get a perfect grade on them. Tests rigth off the handouts.
Father Borges is great... one of the easiest classes I ever took as well. Four tests (very easy... let us take them when we wanted because of soccer conflicts) and two papers. Grading scale is incredibly generous. No attendance policy. Take this guy!
im soo pissed that i chose his class bc of these ratings. he grades sooo HARD. its impossible to get 100 on anythingg. worst teacher ever
Fr. Borges hands out a sheet of paper to everyone before class and then reads it aloud. Then we watch a movie. The quizzes are unpredictable but the tests are right from the quizzes.
Father Borges is the absolute worst. As a teacher, he hands out some papers, reads it aloud, and then we watch 10 minutes of a video. The process repeats itself each class. We always have quizzes and he truly should not be allowed to teach anything at Loyola. Most likely because he is an ass.
The toughest grader alive. Famous words, I don't believe in a perfect score. The class sucked and needed to be a tuesday thursday not a MWF. Enter with caution!!!!!
He just got tenure LAST year and now that he's guaranteed a job, his pattern of teaching/grading has changed. He doesn't believe in perfect scores, his quizzes are on the most trivial facts, and his grading is unpredictable. I thought his class was going to be a breeze during the first week, but he has proven otherwise.
omggg history of south asia was TERRIBLE!!!!! 15 page paper, tests were insane. class was sooo boring except when we watched bollywood movies. he DOESNT TEACH he just reads off packets. not understanding at all he's really mean for a priest
He's a nice person, however he is frivolous when it comes to grading! You cannot get 100% on anything. He takes a half point off as he pleases. This class i spent the most time studying for, the most time producing write ups and papers, and I got the worst grade in this class. I had all A's EXCEPT for his B- if you have him, prepare to write alot!
never ever ever under any circumstances take this man. i cannot stress it enough. UNDER 0 CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE THIS MAN. quizes are literally the most random facts throughout the book, and he reads verbatim during class printed out summaries. COMPLETELY AVOID. AGAIN, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Very nice guy.. His quizzes are pretty hard and his tests are exactly what his quizzes were on so they are REALLY easy (just study ur old quizzes).. Highlight random facts he mentions in class and memorize dates and people names from the worksheets he hands out.. He's not very easy but better then most..
DO NOT TAKE BORGES UNLESS YOU WANT A DETAILED HISTORY OF GOA, INDIA (his hometown). seriously... there is absolutely nothing interesting about his class it's the same thing every day, quiz's are IMPOSSIBLE he asks questions on the most POINTLESS details from the text book, also 8 page paper due Monday after Thanksgiving break... THANK YOU BORGES
Father Borges is not the worst western civ teacher you can get. For the quizzes just study the summaries and things he picks out of the book (sometimes he hints that they will be on the quizzes). Movie and book reflections and you have to go to lectures (he just checks the reflections so don't pour your heart into them). Tests right of the quizzes.
Nice guy but give WAY too much busy work. Weekly quizzes, video write ups, 4 novels with 3 page papers...if you end up taking him; study all the picture descriptions and for tests study ALL the quizes
The class itself is easy to sit through-just read off summary of chapter outloud. Watch movie clip at end and summary of it is due next class. quiz everyweek-impossible...all he cares about is religion and he picks the most nitty gritty details. Tests are exactly off the quizzes-easy to ace. The quizzes ruin the class though. One major paper
Really sweet, humble man. Quizzes are a bit difficult because he will pick very specific details. BUT if you study HARD and keep reading the summaries for quizzes, you'll do great. However, if you're the type who expects a good grade after only reading the summaries once, the quizzes will be a pain.
Borges is a very sweet guy but also a very boring one. you spend the whole class reading from a summary he gives you. The quizzes are very tough, he's a nitty gritty detail guy. But there's so much busy work (video write-ups, book summaries, etc.) that a bad quiz won't affect you that much. I got straight 70's on the quizzes and did alright.
Borges is really interested in history, and gives you a different perspective on things by telling you about the history of India. He does assume that everyone is Catholic though. Ask questions and talk to him, it makes life easier. Also, READ the textbook and take notes on what he says.
Horrible teacher. Quizzes on the most random things which he didn't teach or even hint at in class. Horrible accent. Takes points off for the stupidest things. When you miss points on a quiz, he doesn't even tell you the right answer or why you got it wrong.
Borges is a really sweet teacher. He even takes you out to feed you Indian food. His clarity is off at times and he gives notes awkwardly on the board. If you right down everything he says in class, and study, you guaranteed a high B. There are a lot of points so you can get away with not having excellent grades on everything.
Father Borges is an awesome guy! He really loves what he teaches and has a lot of respect for his students. He is very understanding and is always willing to help you. He even invited the class to his house at the end of the semester for some traditional Indian food and Indian culture activities.
He is a bit hard to understand and his hand writing isn't very clear. He requires everyone to lead the class in prayer at least once and there are video write ups you have to do every single class. Also requires you to attend 6 lectures outside of class and write about them. There is a lot of work. A LOT. Be prepared to read a bunch as well.
Wouldn't recommend. He's hard to understand. Every class you watch a short video that you have to write on so can't miss class. Exams are very hard.
If you go to class, take good notes and review your notes on a regular basis - you're golden. Participate and show that you're interested and you'll pass just fine.
If you write down everything he says and EVERY photo caption he makes you read in class, you'll be fine. Don't really have to do the readings but be familiar with the books or he gets mad. study, quizzes are hard but test questions come from the quizzes, same with the final. A lot of work for a 101 but you will remember a lot.
Awesome professor with a good life story. Easy. Highly recommended.
Fr. Borges is a wealth of information and faith. He is very professional, comes to class perfectly prepared, and expects the same from his students. Biweekly quizzes really affect your grade, so be sure to study hard. Several short papers throughout the semester and one big final paper. He is a very kind and caring professor.
Take extremely detailed notes. "Quizzes" are more like tests so take them seriously. Respect him and he'll respect you in return.
I enjoyed this class more than I thought I would. The quizzes are like tests, but most of the test material comes from the quizzes. Father Borges is a kind man, and knows his stuff. He is straight forward on what material you will be tested on, just make sure to study for the quizzes.
Father Borges is the sweetest man ever. I loved him and he's so kind, but his quizzes are so difficult. Make sure you study hard for the quizzes and you know at least 3 bullet points for notes. Write down everything he says. Also you don't need to read the books so don't worry about those. The first weeks it's like the worst class, but give it time
Do not take this professor! He is unaware of everything and seems like a delusional old man. By far the worst class I have taken. You won't know your grade till report card comes out. So many meaningless quizzes. He is just a flat out terrible teacher and I would never want to see him again. This guy absolutely sucks.
the professor did not have a moodle page set up, no officer hours readily available or provided. Lots of grades with homework, quizzes, test, book discussions and reflections etc. Very lecture heavy and lots of information on power points. 10-page final paper that ISN'T the final, but its a cumulative paper. wouldn't take again.
Do NOT take this class. Quizzes are unbelievably hard unless you memorize every slide on his PowerPoints and they have useless information. Exams are straight from the quizzes, but he doesn't tell you the right answer if you get it wrong. Don't listen to the other reviews unless you're a history connoisseur.
Lectures are every day, and he talks super fast, so probably type your notes. He's super nice, so definitely go to office hours for help if you need it. Lots of quizzes, and they're more like tests. Study EVERYTHING for the quizzes since they ask super specific questions with small details. You won't need the main textbook, but will need the novels
Fr. Borges is a good guy. Lectures every day. Expect 8 quizzes, a midterm, a final, and one big paper throughout the semester (sounds like a lot but it is doable). His quizzes ask for small specific details from his slides and the textbook. Passing is easy but be prepared to study a lot and memorize a lot. Grading criteria and feedback are vague.
Terrible teacher and hard grader. Quizzes are like tests and extremely difficult. Lectures are long and if you don't copy down every word he says you'll struggle
Personally, I wished I looked at rate my professor before taking this class. He talks very fast, doesn't use moodle, doesn't post grades until your final grade is out, and is straight to the book. I am currently struggling in this class. Would not recommend it!
His lectures and quizzes are not even history. He will ask you more about old authors than actual events in history. His quizzes and exams are the same format sometimes even the same questions, but the questions are SUPER detail oriented. His class is all about memorization of the SMALLEST details. would never recommend.
Terrible teacher and hard grader. Quizzes are like tests and extremely difficult. Lectures are long and if you don't copy down every word he says you'll struggle…
He is a bit hard to understand and his handwriting isn't very clear. He requires everyone to lead the class in prayer at least once and there are video write-ups you have to do every single class. Also requires you to attend 6 lectures outside of class and write about them. There is a lot of work. A LOT. Be prepared to read a bunch as well.
Fr. Borges isn't the best teacher. However he isn't the worst, he is on the older side and his lectures aren't as bad to understand in comparison to what people say about his accent and lecture speed. He has had my class read the power points out loud which makes it a lot easier. Overall he is a very underrated professor. Hard to fail if you try!
If you're not a history major, this class is too much work for a graduation core credit. There's practically a quiz every week or every other week and it's about the most minute details given in the presentation slides or textbook. Father Borges is a nice guy but be prepared to WORK YOUR ASS OFF for this class...
Terrible teacher and hard grader. Quizzes are like tests and extremely difficult. Lectures are long and if you don't copy down every word he says you'll struggle.
Do everything you can to avoid this man. I did not pass a quiz the entire semester. He seemed shocked when I met with him to talk about it. The quizzes are based on the smallest details that you have to memorize out of 50 slides per quiz. He will not go over a quiz with you, he will only tell you to read the slides. Impossible class. Run.
Never take this class.
Whatever you do, do not take this course! Fr.Borges is rude and purposely difficult. He does not use Moodle so you are responsible for email each assignment to him.
Reviews aren't fair to Fr Borges.Weekly quizzes after midterm based on his slides. Treat like a real class & it's not hard to get B-. Quizzes have you write three facts on 8 topics from slideshows, just memorize three facts. failed first two quizzes before realizing to study the slides. tests use past quiz questions, just study 1-2hrs! Apply urself
did not read the books, used online sources. if you actually study his slides and how he gives quizzes you can pass them easily if you study an hour or two. have three facts prepared for major topics and learn the names of who did what. only bought 1/5 books rest i found online PDFs. need to treat it like a regular class and you'll do well.
Don't take this guy. You WILL be wasting your time and effort for an introductory course. Way too much work for what it's worth. 18 video write-ups, 8 quizzes that use super specific details from slides, Midterm which is quizzes but longer, 8 page paper, AND a final which is double the midterm. If you think that would be fun, go for it I guess.
Do not take if looking for an easy class. Requires 9 1-page video reflections for 1rst half of the semester and 9 for the 2nd half. Quizzes are very difficult, even with reading and studying, DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE. Midterm and final are 95% questions from quizzes, memorize them. During class have the book ready. Borges is a good teacher but tough
Not worth the effort for an introductory level course. 8 quizzes with super specific details. I studied his slides for hours for them and never got above an 80%. I was a straight A student before this and found this extremely difficult. He only reads off a presentation. Does not put anything in Moodle- I didnt know my overall grade til the very end
Fr. Borges should not be teaching History. I am a senior History major and have enjoyed every History class taught at Loyola until Borges' class. The class is pure cramming, there is no analysis whatsoever. The quizzes are filled with useless information that takes the joy of what studying History is all about.
Borges is a really bad history teacher. The class is unnecessarily hard for no reason and the quizzes are practically impossible to get a perfect score on. DO NOT take him if you're looking for an easy class
Not worth the effort. 18 mini essays across the whole semester and quizzes and tests that are filled with super specific and unnecessary/irrelevant details. Avoid at all costs.
Everything regarding this class is on paper. Grades, exams, homework, essays, everything must be turned in hardcopy and all grades are kept in his physical grade book (no checking grades). Moodle is nonexistent for this class. Mostly busywork, doesn't take much to do well, just tedious and time-consuming assignments that don't take much effort.
Not worth the effort, take him as a last resort
Anybody saying the class is difficult simply didn't try.Yes there is weekly quizzes but they are super short, and the answers are directly in the slides. Just review outside of class for 30 minutes a week.Very caring teacher, would highly recommend.Only downside is a long final paper, but youll have that in most history classes regardless.
Gets a lot of hate for no reason. Quizzes are hard but as long as you show up to class and pay attention you will be fine. Final paper was long and book discussions were a pain but overall, not a terrible class. Doesn't use Moodle so it's impossible to know your grade.
Not worth the amount of time this class took. Often went into the quizzes feeling very confused and unprepared because of the amount of work. Not worth it for a core class.
textbook is a story book and hard to take notes on. lectures are just random parts of the story that don't go together. questions on texts are so specific like he expects us to memorize every single detail. will pretty much call you stupid if you ask any question. i ignored the ratings and took him but seriously this is a warning.
I would never take another class from Father Borges. He is never clear on what is needed to be done. Has many quizzes. Quizzes are impossible and are on things that he'll mention one time in class and never bring it up again. Has no idea how to do anything online. Do not take his class.
Take as a last resort if your getting your history credit
Please don't take this class if you don't have to. The rules change every class and he doesn't listen to student concerns. For tests all he says is study the slides and "memorize everything I say in class" which is unreasonable. He cold calls on kids to read and wont take no for an answer if you object to doing it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I took it as a last resort, so much work for a HS 101 class. Quizzes were very difficult, absolutely no study guides, and it was very hard to figure out what would be on exams. Overall, has a lot of passion for the subject but if you don't this class will be a BORE!
Fr. Borges provides clear guidelines for success. PowerPoints in class are a great study tool for quizzes, and the final paper has ample time for completion. If you put in the effort, you'll find the course rewarding. I was initially nervous about my grade, but at the end of it all, I ended up with an A. I would strongly recommend as an HS100.
Do not recommend taking. Nice guy, but the class was unbearable and unnecessarily hard.
Father Borges is so kind and very passionate. The tests are a bit hard but all the ppl saying he's difficult aren't necessarily right, as long as you pay attention and take notes, you'll be fine. His test questions are literally pulled straight from the slides, so it's really hard to do poorly. Would for sure take a class with him again.

Father Borges is a nice and good man. However, his class is unnecessarily very difficult and time consuming. I have a good GPA don't complain about classes. Quizes every week or so with EXTREMELY specific and anecdotal questions. Very rarely questions related to the big picture. If you take, make a quizlet of every random fact mentioned in class.
Honestly. Probably the worst class I've ever taken. And I'm not really a complainer
Extremely time consuming class. More effort required than my 4 other classes combined. Not even joking. Really just a horrible experience. Its a 100 level class, this is really unnecessesary.Huge amounts of stress. Takes away time from classes that matter. Ridiculous class by every stretch. I've never written a review before.
I like Father Borges. the class does require a fair amount of effort to succeed. Lots of reading, some of which doesn't seem totally relevant. Hes not a tough grader, but his quizzes are challenging, even with a lot of studying. I wouldn't reccomend to anyone who wants an easy HIS100. It feels rewarding coming out with a good grade. Stressful class
Do NOT take his class if you dont have to!! In his class he assigns daily papers and you must complete nine before and after midterms. Then there would also be weekly quizzes and none of them followed anything that he taught during lectures.
Just dont do it
such a kind soul but wow I would never take this class again. The quizzes quite literally had nothing to do with what we learned in class. He also randomly calls on you to read random passages which was obnoxious.
He doesn't explain anything. Questions come from nowhere. Impossible to do well.
Father Borges is a great person. However, this class had me overloaded with work throughout the semester. You have to read 3 novels and 2 historical books over the semester. 18 total write-ups. 3 different 1.5 page papers, and a 7 page final paper (+midterm/final). Quizzes are tough, most questions are recalling random bits of text from the books.
I will probably fail this class. Keep in mind, I did't do the readings, but who's trying to read one book in like 1 week on top of all other schoolwork? The entire class is given page-long presentations that cover information in the books. Then the quiz is random information, and the slideshows have so much information that it's too much to study.
really nice guy but don't take it unless you really want a challenge. quizzes pull from the most obscure details on slides and most people fail. i worked hard and got a good grade but still. midterm and final are repeated quiz questions. I had a quiz, a seven-page paper, and a final all in one week. it's just not worth the hours studying.
The class was a lot different than expected. I went in not knowing that the quizzes would be half notes and the other half would be nothing we went over. The mid-term and final, however, were the quizzes combined, so it was easy. I would not recommend it if you do not know a lot about the church or religion....or India.
Not the worst, but definitely need to keep up with the readings.
Bro run. He's very nice but hollllllly the grading and the workload is not only tedious but demeaning. The tests suck, but other grades are easily obtainable. Also the Jesuits might rule the world so this might be propaganda.
Worst teacher I've ever had In a semester: - 18 2 paragraph video responses - 4+ essays (Last is 7 pages) - 8 quiz's 1 midterm 1 final - Anything said in class can be on the test and there's no study guide - Read 5 books (20-40 pages a day) - Will cold call for random questions and to read Boring material, harder than all my other classes combined
sweetest soul on the planet but I crashed out about this class every day. calls on people to read during class and you will have reading homework every night. he gives a lot of assignments like video writings or essays that will easily get your grade up. the class wasn't really hard it was just the workload that was a lot.
this professor genuinely made me dread going to class, if you don't need to take this class please don't put yourself through hell. if you do end up having to take his course, please actually study for the quizzes. though he never tests you on what's on the lecture slides, you just have to magically know the answers somehow. anyways, good luck
