Chuck likes to make class interesting with good use of technology and visual aides. Also, he tells some pretty bad math jokes. He is a really good teacher and fairly tough, but if you take the time to do the work, you will be fine. He has gotten somewhat soft over time, though.
Prof. Buchwald's tests are brutal. He tests comprehension of concepts, so put in the homework time. He grades extremely fairly, and will help everytime you ask. So ask. If you want to learn the subject, he's a good teacher. If you want a high GPA...plan on living in the math lab.
best teacher ever! take this teacher. he is stylish
Chuck is a awesome teacher. He is SO HOT!!! Expect to learn ALOT and be stretched. Definetely a chile pepper.
i had alot of fun in his class, he teaches well and is always there to help. i would recomend this teacher to anyone. but he is tough. so dont slack off
chuck is a great teacher, but easily one of the hardest i've ever had. explains things well, but his tests are brutal. usually puts at least one question you've never seen on tests. he keeps class interesting, is pretty funny, and is very approachable, so ask questions.
Chuck is the man, plain and simple. His lectures make you want to learn, but his test make you feel like you just got punched in the junk. I would consider a C in chucks class an A in any other. He also likes it when you dress up like him for halloween. I wish he was teaching D/E.
very good teacher, 30 was the first math class I ever actually liked going to. It's a hard class, but perfectly doable, IF you stay on top of things. But if you're having a crappy semester and fall behind, his tests can become murderously hard very quickly.
This guy is useless. He'll talk about random stuff instead of actually trying to teach and will mark you off using different methods to get the same answer. Teachers like this are the reason that community colleges have such a bad reputations.
This guy was great from the start. He kept my interest by giving us cool problems applicable to real life, like monks jumping off mountains and how to calculate guitar string vibrations. He's awesome, especially the days he has caffeine. You can tell cuz he talks a million miles an hour. Id take him again if I could! But he's hard! Do the homework!
Chuck is an EXCELLENT teacher, very good at making sure you understand the material before continuing. Also very good at keeping your interest during lecture. I wish he was teaching DE!
Chuck is an amazing teacher. He explains every aspect of every topic from multiple perspectives. His tests are very challenging, but will cause you to hone your problem solving skills, which is imperative. I have never had an instructor more devoted to teaching his students. Very hard work but worth it.
Buchwald is a fantastic professor. I struggled a lot in his class, which really is a good thing. I came out of it a better mathematician and a smarter person. His tests will challenge you to wits end though, study up on EVERY trig identity, he will use even the most obscure ones. I now think outside the box more thanks to this class. Well worth it!
Self checking tests that provide a challenge, you don't have to do the homework but you should oh and yes, hotness.
Chuck is a sexy beast. His math skills will knock your socks off! But be prepared for difficult and tricky tests. He's very funny and loves making jokes; easy to get along with.
Excellent teacher. I'm an engineering Major, and he is one of the best math teacher I have ever had. His class is hard, but if you get a Cin his class, you are prepared for the next level.
This was the most fun math class I've ever taken. Chuck is enthusiastic, intelligent, and funny! I did enjoy it, but it was also probably the most difficult math class I've ever had. His tests are super tricky, so you must KNOW IT WELL. You will leave his class understanding the material. I highly recommend this guy!! :)
Hands down the best teacher on campus. Chuck knows better than any teacher on how to teach to students. his handouts are helpful, examples are clear, easy to understand. The class material itself is somewhat challenging, but if you put in EFFORT you can easily get a good grade. Door is almost always open. BETTER THAN BALAGUY!
Great teacher ... but hard class.
Chuck's fantastic. His test are hard but his lectures are really clear, and if you have a question he will find you an answer. If you don't like cussing maybe not the teacher for you. But if you don't mind it, then lecture will be very interesting and entertaining. Doing homework in the math center after class is the best way to do well.
He is a great teacher. Tests are difficult, but necessary to fully understand math. I can not help the fact that he is extremely good looking, Chile Peppers are in order.
Greatest math teacher I have ever had; highly recommended. His lectures are clear and his tests are interesting, even as a returning calc student I have learned more about calc and math in general than in any of my previous classes.
Chuck is an awesome teacher. I wouldn't recommend taking him if you aren't willing to work. If you're moving on to a higher level class, you will be more than ready. First math teacher that made it fun in class.
Best teacher I've ever had. Show up to class, be sure to do all of the assigned problems for your benefit, and be ready for tough tests. It may be hard, but you will learn and retain the material without a doubt if you pass the class.
A very good teacher. Don't sign up expecting a cakewalk. He will make you work! But he will do everything within his power to help you succeed. He takes notice of you if you speak up and ask him questions regularly. He's the best teacher I've ever had. He uses humor a lot to keep things fun. Even if you're not a math person, he can help you pass.
Excellent teacher. Light-hearted, good presentation, but tough material--not for the faint of heart. If you can rise to the challenge, this is the prof for you.
He's a fun teacher. He's great to talk to and knows how to keep things fun in class. When he makes a mistake, he fesses up to it and then corrects it. I like that in a professor.
He is one the best. Great teacher.I still don't understand the reason behind his very difficult tests and exams. I think he enjoy seeing student being miserable. He will not let you slide. No cheat sheet allowed. He is great teacher for you, if you want to spend 8 hrs a day studying Math.
He is probably the most thorough math instructor in the known universe. He covers every part of the book including the review chapter and you will definitely be prepared for 2nd sem. Calc after him. I took this class in HS and I felt like it was a completely different course. His tests are borderline unACEable. But he's w/o a doubt the best.
Chuck's class is easily the hardest class I have ever taken, but after taking his class I feel like I am much smarter. He is very nice and has no problem with helping you understand the subject. He is very helpful and definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had.
Chuck is AWESOME! Theoretical, tests hard, but will take any amount of time to get you where you need to be, he's funny, approachable, available, gives thorough response to e-mail questions. Hard, but not impossible, I got an A over summer. You'll get out what you put in. Grades by 3 exams, 1 final, & 5 of 7 quizzes. He'll make u love calc.
he is a pretty good teacher, buttt if you want a chill class do not take him... there is about 4 test in his class but they are ABSOLUTETLY HARDDDDD. your grade is based on those 4 test and like 6 quizes ..
Chuck is a GREAT teacher!! He is very good at explaining math and is a complete goofball! But do NOT take a computer mediated course. It is extremely hard! And the program, ALEKS, isn't very good. I recommend Chuck, but take him in LECTURE!!
Not a good teacher at all! He is very personable and fun to talk to, but he doesn't know how to teach. He made this calculus class so incredibly hard many of the straight A students were getting D's on the tests. He gets some sick pleasure out of making it so hard. Don't take him for calculus!
He's a great teacher. It was clear what he was trying to teach which gives you this sense of understanding then he gives you his test. Unbelivably hard w/ curveball questions that require outside the box thinking. 500 pts class 400 pts come from 3exams/final thats 80% of grade. If you don't need math 32 or not a math/engineer major find someone els
Very hard but worth it, especially if you're moving to the next semester of calc. Super helpful and nice, and an awesome person and teacher! If you take him, expect to have no life, and to study a lot.
Awesome teacher! Awesome guy! He's really hard, but it's worth it if you actually need to learn the subject or if you want to advance in math. Expect to have no life while taking this class. He's really funny too and keeps the class entertaining.
Fun professor to have...really passionate about math...the material is not easy, and chuck likes to throw in some TRICKY(not necessarily difficult) problems...just be prepared...you will do fine and have some fun learning too...
So this class is great for engineers, he likes to make the class hard so when you go to the next calc you are well, prepared but when you are a bio major and you are worried about your GPA, pick some else because this is ur last math just get an A, and not worry about learning it because you really wont need it
Great teacher, if you need to continue with math Chuck is by far the best choice but tests pretty much make up all of the grade and they are horrible. If you can't afford a bad grade choose someone else but if you really need to understand the material Chuck is your man.
Excellent teacher!!! extremely Difficult!!!! be prepared to doubt your knowledge during any of his tests or quizzes, but isnt that the point of learning it?
HARD CLASS,great teacher. Chuck gives clear, enthusiastic lectures with good examples and visual aid. He likes interaction and questions. His quizzes and tests are GNARLY, and that is coming from someone who spent hours doing all the homework and studying. It's a TOUGH subject, we were tested hard but taught well. Heads up, he swears.
This class was the hardest class that I have ever taken! The class itself wasn't that hard of concepts (for people that love math), but imagine the exceptions in math used again and again! Buchwald does really teach you math through and through. Allows you to think out of the box. I really appreciated his class, but not my grade.
Let me first preface by saying Chuck is an AMAZING teacher. I learned more in his class than I have in any other math class I've ever taken. Now that that's out of the way his tests ARE REALLY FREAKIN HARD! Chuck writes tests that will chew you up and spit you out! All the while he cackles maniacally at his desk. This man creates monsters...
Liked/frustrated. Chuck lectured well, explains, friendly, interesting, swore some, went off on bunny trails, seemed like a totally great teacher... but his tests/quizzes, I thought, set me up to fail. I did the work, studied SO long and hard, but was totally let down and unprepared for whatever he gave us.
Chuck is an amazing professor. He is enthusiastic and his lectures are clear if you are up to date on the topic. Keep in mind the computer mediated class is extremely difficult and it is rare to receive in A.
Teachers like Chuck are extremely rare. He is by leaps and bounds better then any other teacher I have ever had. His tests are challenging only because his problems require you to understand the concepts and not just how to regurgitate the HW. If you pay attention in class and do your HW you will do well. Not a class for people who want to coast.
Worst online teacher ever. He doesn't help his students whats so ever. Prepare to teach yourself. His emails are rude, but only when he actually does email you. I tried contacting him about a gazillion times, only got a response 3 times. He went M.I.A the last few weeks of the semester. this guy is a horrible teacher!
If you can, avoid him. I took his online class..mistake. He never responds to emails and leaves out important details when he sends emails to the class (on rare occasions). Be prepared to teach yourself. Also, I agree with other reviewer that he went MIA on finals week. Who knows, his on campus class may be better. Stay away from online though.
Great teacher but tests are RIDICULOUS! Supper nice guy but really hard class - agree with others. Never had lower than A in math before got a C in this class.
Should have stayed away. Seems like such a great guy, and really does a great job teaching... but then why does he give you test on stuff youve never seen before? Seriously the hardest class I've ever taken, and that simply because you tests you on material he does not teach. Stay away. I'm a straight A student, why Chuck? Why?!
I will just add to what has already been said before me. I am a straight A with a very strong work ethic and this class is absolutely impossible. He is a great guy, but what does that matter when he fails everyone? The simple fact is that he gives out tests on material no one has ever seen before. He is the absolute worst teacher I have ever.
He enjoy his subject more then his students. How are you suppose to prepare for the test when his HW and practice exams don't show up on the test. I would stay away unless you like wandering in the dark.
EXTREMELY hard class! Tests have at least one NEW question you have never seen before. Good business examples but way harder than other teachers
First time I have not got an A in a math class. Good if you're an engineer or physics major and really need to know math but not if this is your last class. No graded homework only homework quizzes and tests so no fluff points.
A nice guy, great teacher, but his test are very hard. There is always one question you've never seen before. This is not good if your going to a major that is heavily impacted, and your gpa depends on this class that you need. Go to sac state, the class is easier and you learn the same.
He wants to be nice, and answers each question. However, he confuses students. Chuck gave us examples of quizzes, but he it always has some hard problems you never expect. On the final, he told us what to expect, but it wasn't true. We had exercises we didn't expect to see on Final and we didn't have some exercises he prepared us for. Avoid him!!!
Chuck rocks! He's incredibly brilliant, but he's also a brutal when he makes his tests. From personal experience and getting to know him I would take his classes again. His quizzes and tests are no joke, study the harder questions from the textbook if you want to understand his questions.
Hard class great professor. Not a class you can coast by in at all!
Decent teacher. His exams and quizzes are almost impossible to pass if you are just okay at math. Does not collect homework. He believes that there should be at least one problem on the quiz or exam that you have never seen before. Which I find moronic. Very theoretical problems. No extra credit. If your looking for an A, look else where.
I have no idea what is real anymore. Thanks chuck
Great teacher and keeps the lectures very exciting and engaging. His tests and quizzes difficulty is about domestic abuse level. I love him as a person, but his rigour is insane.
Chuck is a brutal teacher. Teaches the basics well, but does not test you on the basics. He test you on the most confusing theoretical problems you could ever imagine. Does not collect homework. I learned from this class that the saying "hard work pays off" is a fat lie. His practice final was the basics, the actual final was mpre theoretical BS.
Yes, buchwald lectures well but the man sets you up to fail. Tests are nearly impossible to pass. He makes jokes but in the end he is laughing at you not with you. He enjoys watching his students fail. If you can, avoid taking higher math (calc) at Sierra, the department is run by Buchwald.
Avoid this teacher at all costs. VERY HARD. If you are not a born mathematician and study 24 hours a day you WILL NOT PASS.
Chuck is tough. There's no getting around it. However, he has a genuine love for the subject, for his students, and learning in general. The man is a test-writing GENIUS with a love for clean numbers. He doesn't test you on memorizing how to solve specific problems, but instead challenges your understanding of math itself. STUDY, stay calm, & pass.
great teacher!!! he is the best math teacher i have ever had. however if u want to transfer DONT TAKE HIM. U will get a low grade and your gpa will suffer . if you think math is ur thing well not anymore. just dont do it, trust me.
Definitely possesses amazing math skills. He wants to rub your face in it by administering ridiculous exams. He thinks it's cute too (his "Chucked up" problems?). GPA killer. Is a C in his class like an A in another prof's class? Possibly. But you know what a C on a transcript looks like? A C. Avoid at all costs.
Never gotten anything other than an A (60+ units) before taking this class and got a D. Impossible to prepare for the tests. Unless you eat, breath, and live math you will not pass this class. Ridiculous.
Avoid at all costs. You will not pass this class unless you are a math genius. There are other options than this sad, ridiculous, teacher. He will make your life hell. I suggest taking math 31 at ARC. Way easier and better teachers.
The "B" I got in Chuck's class would easily be an "A" in any other class. Tests are extremely tough. Thank god for the final or I think I would have gotten a "C".
His tests are wicked and you must know concepts not just memorizing. No notes or calculators allowed ever. If you really want to learn and don't need an A then this is the guy for you. If GPA is your thing for transer take someone easier.
Chuck is an OK prof, not excellent. Honestly you don't learn alot from lecture. He is better 1 on 1. He believes every student is "average" and deserves a "c". His exams don't really allow you to display your knowledge because each problem is new. Very unfair and gives lousy examples in class, he likes to keep his math tricks to himself. AVOID.
The whole class fails Buchwald's exams and the avg is 30-40%. He will not curve and doesn't believe that he is the problem to his student's failure. You can study for DAYS and still fail or get a C.I beg you pls don't take this professor, for your mental safety and GPA sake. Balaguy is better in comparison because he actually CARES for his students
you can eat breathe and sleep calc but there is no way around Chuck's exams, maybe if you have taken the class before or three times. A good professor should help you do well on the exams but chuck doesn't. I took his class in the summer which is hard enough but gave no mercy. I honestly had to learn everything on my own. Not a good educator either
Remember that a hard professor is NOT synonymous with a good professor. Chuck is not a good professor. He only knows how to teach basics and struggles teaching complexity that is why his students are blindsided by his exams. If you take this class he wont teach you the tricks, you need to figure them out. Doable C, very Hard B, Almost impossible A.
I know many bright people who have either failed or gotten a undeserving grade from this professor. Just avoid this professor, trust me.. Spare your tears and sleepless nights. You will learn the same material with any other professor. He teaches at university level but NEVER curves. Calc 2 is already hard but he makes it even harder on purpose.
Chuck does not want his class to do well, he only wants a few students in stick around and pass. He said our class avg was 'too high' and made our next exam impossible. He prides himself in being difficult and will not lower his curriculum even if nobody passes. He is a prompt grader and fair grader but this doesn't excuse his unfair criteria.
He understands and can teach math very well. Exams are very hard. Find as much old exams from pervious semesters and study them. He gets problems from the book and twist them around to make them look different. If you weak in math, don't take him. This will be like a 6 unit class not 4. Takes a lot of time
If you plan to be a Mathematics Major then he's for you but exams are needlessly hard. Being proficient at all the material isnt enough, you need to know how to do a wide variety of different problems that he doesn't tell you will be on the exam. He does NOT prepare you for exams. Difficulty-wise, homework problems are a 5 but his tests are a 10.
Don't take his class. No matter how good you are at math, you're risking a big hit to your GPA. It's comical how standards between professors can vary so much. I don't know how having class averages well below 50% is acceptable by any standard, while other professors are well above that with their classes. 3 tests and 1 final. Zero adjustments.
If you decide to take his class, then be prepared to do ALL sorts of problems you can spot in your textbook. He is a witty teacher who makes the lecture fun and simple. His tests and quizzes, however, are a bit challenging. But trust me, if you can pass his Calc 1 class, then you can walk into ANY Calc 2 class and do amazingly well.
I had to drop this class. Tests are way too hard. Homework problems are way easier than test problems so you don't get any hard practice. Lectures were good but not enough to prepare you for the difficulty of the test questions.
This was one of the best and hardest profs I have ever had. turned me completely around from hating math, to really enjoying it. If I could have I would have taken him for all of me calculus classes. If you take his class get really good at his chucked up problems and you will do great.
Chuck's passionate about Calc and it clearly shows. His lectures are interesting and he presents the material in a applicable way. I have taken a lot of Calc classes and there were many fundamental things that I truly understood for the first time because of him. Difficult class, but an excellent teacher. Would take his class again in a heart beat.
Professor Buchwald was an amazing professor. The class was hard, and the final is 60% of your grade!! However, the online Aleks program is amazing, and Buchwald was extremely available and willing to help!
Don't bother. Most of our class was failing, so I dropped the class on the last drop day. The entire Sierra math department is great if you want to go to MIT, but for Sac State it is wildly excessive. I got an 'A' at ARC, learned everything I needed to, without the unnecessary Ivy league prep.
Charles Buchwald actually cares about your grades (well in my case he does) but I just HATE the Aleks online learning system. It's extremely difficult and frustrating. Also, be sure to study for the final because it covers EVERY single lesson and is worth more than half of your final grade.
He is one of the best teachers that I ever had.
Honestly the most difficult class I've ever taken! Don't risk your grade to prove yourself that you can pass his class. If you are gifted in math, then take him. Otherwise, you'll be looking at a low grade on your transcript.
Chuck is the best professor I've ever had! Extremely thoughtful and knowledgeable. He is always available for his students, take advantage of OH! Extremely comical. 10/10 would take again.
Agree with prior - good class (lots of jokes) but really hard tests. Homework not collected but an absolute must!
Chuck is very knowledgeable. However my feeling is that he should be teaching an honors level class. He expects students to perform at this level and if you do not, you probably won't pass. He expects that you have memorized all of the trig identities and puts them in the tests. No formula sheet allowed. His class is tough,
Incredible teacher! Very passionate about maths! Would highly recommend if your going into the STEM field. However, if you hate math, he is not the best choice.
How does anyone pass!?!?!?
Chuck is an amazing professor! The class I took was really hard, but Chuck was extremely helpful and got me through it. He is a really talented and caring teacher, a great guy, and he's really funny. I'd recommend his class to anyone :)
Why does he make all of his tests impossibly hard. Not even the hardest problems from the book will really prepare you for his level of difficulty
I dont think I would take chuck again. he makes passing to difficult. If this was the only class that I was taking maybe i could invest the 100 hours it takes to prepare for his exams. My GPA use to be high but not anymore.
Mr. Buchwald is a great teacher. If you want to learn about calculus, this is your guy. However, if you just want to pass a calc 1 class and your major does not require you to go any further then you should look elsewhere as Chuck is a difficult professor for an already difficult class.
great teacher, but his tests are impossible. you really feel like you are learning and understanding the material... but then a test comes and none of the material was taught. he likes to throw in one questions that he had NEVER taught (thats like his thing) and it is actually insane.
Made my experience in college infinitely better. (Spoiler alert: things don't get easier when you flee Sierra and go to a real university) Two years later at my university taking a differential equations class, I can still remember how to solve basic DiffEqs, even though the topic was only covered for a week (I took a calc class). Thank you Chuck
Tests on material not covered in class. Tests are so much harder than the hardest calc year you can think of. There are other ways to take calc (ARC, sac, wait to trasfer, etc) without tanking your gpa
Save your gpa. He refuses to curve despite the tests avg being less than 50%. Impossible to get an A, hardest B youll ever get, youll be thankful to get a C.
He's an awesome guy who likes to let his inner nerd out which I greatly admire. However, his math classes are deathly difficult. I have never tried so hard in a class to end up with a C- before (which is fairly impressive considering his teaching). He explains things way too quickly and expects us to do homework that he barely taught us.
GPA killer. Better off taking calc somewhere else
Chuck is a hilarious guy who makes learning math entertaining. Unfortunately, while he could be an amazing teacher, his tests and quizzes (which make up the entire grade) are ridiculously hard. My class got 60% averages on the tests and he considered that to be an amazing feat. I received tutoring daily and I still believe I will fail this class.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS, YOU WILL FAIL!!! hardest teacher ever! GPA killer, class average 30%, exams super hard, does not know how to teach
Hardest class I've ever taken! I had over a 4.4 GPA before taking this class . Heading to medical school and I really needed to get a passing grade. It wasn' possible in this class. I went to paid tutoring every week, his office hours and the tutor center on campus. He is a nice guy but has serious issues from his prior professors failing him.
online he gives no homework and has one very short lecture a week if this is what passes for teaching then our education system is a joke legitmatly giave an hour and a hlf for lecture videos then gave us off the chart exams sorry man if your gunna skip out on teaching chill out with the tests
Have him during fall 2020 with Covid-19 causing class to be online. Most of the time he uses videos of other professors lecturing instead of making his own. Then decides to give us a test that he designed to take 24-36 hours instead of 2-3 since we are online instead of being on campus which ended up with a class average below a 50%. Do not take!
Everything was done through ALEKS. Homework took forever to do but were only worth a couple points, which was a pain in the ass. Exams were 100 points and the final exam was 600. Grading made no sense to me and had to teach myself through it all.
He is a really good Professor one of the best. He will make a better mathematician during any course you take with him. He is tough but you dont want any easy A. Easy is boring man.
Do not take this professor. He does not teach you anything about the subject. Each week he gives some "lecture videos" that are 10 min long and a majority of the time it is someone else's videos. The exams are extremely difficult covering material never taught before.
Don't waste your time find a better teacher
DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. (Go take it at ARC or anywhere else) I mean it when I say YOU WILL NOT PASS. Seriously. The class is weighted 80% on exams and finals, and the averages for the first two exams have been around 40%. If you are a star student (3.7+ GPA) you will probably pass with a C. If you are <3.5 GPA, you will not pass.
This class is really hard, but I was able to get an A without prior experience in Trig. He doesn't assign any homework, but makes the exams really hard. I recommend reading through the textbook in your own time because his lectures can be confusing. He's a really funny teacher and I recommend taking him if you are up for the challenge.
Mean Grade for exam1 was 9/75. Highest score was 41/75. Mean score for quizzes was around 5/10 and highest around 9/10. You need to meet idiosyncratic 'work requirements' to get points for paper-based test questions that are not like hw problems "new" and more complicated. Quizzes don't need 'work' and are not like hw problems and more complicated.
Exams requires explanations of math steps. Doesnt explain on test or elsewhere what work to show on test and takes off points for incorrect work. Homework not collected but assigned. Gave us extra 15 points on exam 1 because of covid. In-class exam rules. Not for quizzes.
I took this class after reading the reviews and I was prepared for a challenge. His exams take 15+ hours to complete (you have to write hand written explanations for all of your answers), on the first exam the average score was a 9/75, the highest was a 47/75. Not a one person got an A, even after the 15 point grade bump... nope, he doesnt curve.
I took his class during online classes and we did everything through ALEKS so the teacher doesn't really do anything. You basically have to teach yourself everything, but he responds to emails and will help you if you have any questions. It was the first time I got an A in math. There are four exams that are worth a lot of points so beware.
Tests were the hardest thing ever. It was on things you have never done. It's supposed to measure on how much you understand the subject, but it is impossible to pass. Most of the class failed the very first exam. Quizzes weren't hard if you did your work, but they don't matter in the long run.
Your grade is determined by weekly quizzes and exams. Quizzes are easy but inconsequential. Your grade pretty much comes down to what you get on the exams. That would be fine but he is pretty much the toughest grader you'll probably ever have. More than half of the students in both his classes ended up dropping the course. I do not recommend.
Brutal exams, hard quizzes. Don't take unless math major. Good humor.
Dont take this class! It was all online and he didnt teach at all. I couldve taught this class because all he did was put in grades in from ALEKS. You have to teach yourself everything on ALEKS and you must complete everything otherwise its a zero. Your grade is assignments and the tests. No extra credit or late work. I failed but not taking w him.
Do not take this class in an online environment. There were no personal lectures provided, just links to other YouTube videos. No real instruction on homework just to do whatever problems you want from the book. Weekly quizzes on webassign that were hard for no reason. Gave all weekend for tests but take OVER 30 HOURS to complete.
Do not take this teacher online! The worst math class I have ever tried to attend. He provides almost zero of his own lectures and almost exclusively links to professors on Youtube. Has no interactive office hours and does not provide any guidance on how he wants problems done. You are left to figure it out and get marked down. STAY AWAY STAY AWAY
OK lecture videos. Much better homework videos and Zoom meetings - when they didn't crash. Gives 3 days for take-home exams (Friday - Sunday). Fast email response but no homework points.
Exams are tough and must show and explain steps. Has practice tests and solutions worked out that help and he will answer any question. I have bad internet and this was during pandemic so watching videos was tough but he as very helpful and even offered to drive out to my meet me instead of zooming.
I had to drop this class to care for a sick family member. Uses the ALEKS program which is just OK, but he allows you to retake exams which makes things much easier. Very responsive and caring teacher but I wish he wouldn't use ALEKS (the textbook videos are very dry and the written explanations sometimes skip steps).
Zero effort made by the professor. No lectures or zooms, or any teaching whatsoever. Be ready to teach yourself with YouTube videos. Incredibly hard tests that he allows you to retake over and over again because youre going to just fail them. Because he doesnt teach. AT ALL. I would never take him again. Please choose a different professor.
I wish I had an actual professor for a stats class and not a link to some YouTube vids. I should have looked at reviews before choosing this professor. The negative ones are 100% accurate.
I dont understand how its possible for a professor to do so little. Maybe I have just gotten lucky with the other professors I have had? Im speechless. It was like a bowl of Halloween candy left out in the porch help yourself. Um, thanks.
I don't know about his onground classes but online was easy A. Watch videos, answer questions in ALEX, take test (same exact questions). Plus allows infinite retakes. He posts weekly class info, tips & suggestions, math t-shirts and gave 50 points extra credit just for responding.
This was the last math class I needed and I can't believe I passed. Professor Buchwald gave us so many extensions and extra credit. I had a lot going on this summer and he was always willing to help. He responded to each of my many questions right away and was very understanding. You are allowed to use notes and retake tests.
It was hard. If I could go back, I would not take him again. The no instruction thing is rough. If you are a math major, maybe you'll be fine. From now on, I will do professor research before I sign up for classes.
No homework points. Videos and ALEKS were typical for an online class. Retaking tests and extra credit made things nice and easy and yes he granted many extensions.
Professor Buchwald is very nice and was always willing to help me especially when I didn't understand the videos or the probelm explanation. I do wish he gave points for the topics in ALEK.
The professor made it so we learned from a program called ALEKS instead of him and although its a good learning platform, it didn't allow me on most of the topics i didn't know - it only allows you on things you're "ready for". I needed to be taught! Many many many hours of teaching myself a very difficult subject. It was an awful experience.
ALEKS sucks but he has a video for every topic that walks you through what to do so its really eazy. He gave me extended time every email I sent him. In the last week he let us go back and retake ALL of the previous exams which gave me an A - awesome!
Test corrections or retakes are huge! Practice tests are the same as regular exam questions with different numbers. Post a few comments or replies in Canvas and guarantee pass.
Professor Buchwald made taking Stats so easy. He is extremely flexible and its almost impossible to fail his class. He is an amazing teacher and wants you to pass. Lecture videos are OK for topics and he is very helpful.
He let us take all the exams over at the end of the semester - I think because nobody did good on them. Weird that the teacher was so non existent but loved the test retakes. All in all, just ok. Personally I like other teaching styles but if you like working independently its a good class for you!!
This was such a simple A for an online class. Tons of videos for both concepts and example problems. Exams are almost identical to practice tests with retakes and 10% extra credit for posting on Canvas - ridiculously easy!
Professor Buchwald is such a great guy. His class was clear and totally reasonable. I don't get all the negative comments. He gives you all the help you can ask for and is very understanding giving extra time and extra credit.
Awesome!
Easy A
Thumbs down. Pick a different instructor.
I did not want to take stats online but it went fairly well. I had to redo some questions 5 or 6 times to get them correct. Extra credit was huge!
I had to drop the class because my work schedule changed, but his lectures are great and he allows test corrections for a guaranteed pass. Lots of quizzes, but you can use notes and homework.
Listen, he's a funny guy and it's an entertaining class. He's never available during his own set offices hours, and an incredibly harsh grader. In one problem I forgot to put the right-side parenthesis and got marked off 4 points for it (in a 5 point problem). I cannot stress enough how much you should NOT take this class.
Great class! Impossible to get below a C. He allows test corrections for automatic 70% and he posts the solutions. Entertaining lectures with lots of jokes.
No graded homework but has a lot of quizzes. Some are group or take home and drops a bunch of them. Allows test corrections so you can jump up to the next higher grade. Solid class - easy pass! Chuck is the bearded math wizard!
Awesome! I missed a lot of classes this year but he let me do make ups for everything. Knowledgeable, caring, funny professor. He is a lot easier and nicer than most of the other Calculus teachers. I will be taking him for Calc2 next semester for sure.
One of the best and funniest professors I have had. Easy to follow syllabus and schedule laid out on website from the beginning with 4 Unit tests. No surprises and NO FINAL EXAM. Test corrections are huge. Even if you fail you can submit corrections to earn at least a C. No required homework but quizzes. He drops lowest so my C is now a B.
One of the best math teachers at Sierra. He always tries to make class fun and entertaining. He walks you through how to do problems and why rather than just making you do them on your own which is very helpful if you struggle like me. I highly recommend taking his class. You will pass no doubt.
Honestly it is near impossible to fail his class. Every test can be resubmitted for at least a passing grade. 13 quizzes and only keeps top 8 scores (throw out lowest 5). Homework NOT collected but definitely do it - these are quiz problems. You can use notes, calculator, handouts on tests and quizzes.
Take his night classes - if you can. He always let our class stay and finish quizzes and tests which was really nice. He would always stay after class and help continue explaining things and helping us with homework questions. Incredible smart but a really down to earth nice guy. He works through every step in the problems which is awesome!
There is NO FINAL EXAM. We took the last exam the week before class end so we can do test corrections this week. He allowed us to turn in via email so we don't have to go into class this week which is huge for me so I can study for my other exams. Really nice and caring professor . Definitely take him! Thumbs UP!
Wow what a great professor. He explains all the steps for each problem even telling you what his thought process is to get started and why. I thought he was joking but there is seriously no final in this class. Only 4 "unit" exams. Lots of quizzes, but he drops almost half of them at the end of the semester. Do the homework he posts answers.
Had online, he was really responsive to emails. Doesn't test straight out of the book so really look at the problems he gives on review sheets and ask for more if needed to get a gauge on the expected difficulty. Also expects you to thoroughly explain your answers and work which can be annoying until you get used to it
Lenient grader. Very nice guy, but kind of wish he was more serious about teaching. He'll help you get a good grade but he'll also throw very hard stuff at you on tests. Many dropped out or did poorly because of his inability to make the most of class time, often joking or swearing most of the period. Just teach the book, man!
Chuck makes his lectures very fun and interesting, however, it is nothing alike what happens to be on the tests. He told us if we do our homework the quizzes we'd get A's on because it was exactly the homework, but was not the case. Super hard class he had to start giving group and take home quizzes because no one was passing. Did not learn much.
I took this class last semester and was doing miserably, there was overall 4 huge tests and about 1/2 quizzes a week or so. I didnt like this class it was very difficult for me. Im a visual learner and he did the math questions super fast that if you look down one moment you would get lost real quick. Didnt really like his math technique.
Chuck is a very nice guy. He had an extra review session for us and gave us all of his math 30 stuff to help get ready for his 31 class. He is funny, caring and understanding.
Professor Buchwald's class is great! His lectures are funny and still makes sure to cover all the examples. His web page is boring but clear and simple to find things (way easier than trying to find stuff in Canvas). He gives good feedback on graded quizzes and you can use your notes on exams plus NO FINAL. He is one of the best at Sierra. 10+
Chuck is so nice! I had issues with Covid and he was super understanding and accomodating. His lectures are always lively and packed full of content. He makes lots of jokes but he does swear quite a bit in class but hey it is college so whatever.
Test corrections saved my life! I never would have passed without them - THANK YOU CHUCK.
No TESTS! He only requires 8 quizzes (mostly group) and drops the lowest 5. We still have 2 weeks of class left and I already have a B no matter what happens on the last 2 quizzes. His lectures are fun and he is always will to answer any questions. Homework is not required but just like the quiz questions so do them all. You can use on quiz!
Best professor ever with no doubts. TAKE him!!
Most amazing professor ever. Caring, smart, actually knows how to teach calculus, flexible and fun!
Incredibly inappropriate. Joking during class about school shootings and bombings. Broke his leg within the first few weeks of the semester and spent the remaining time either absent or high on pain medication (admittedly). Extremely uncomfortable / unprofessional setting that did not allow a healthy learning environment. Find another professor.
Absolutely unprofessional and harmful teaching environment. Joking in the back of the class with students most of the period. Missed half the semester due to breaking his leg and returned to campus and 'teach' while admittedly lit on pain meds... Not worth your time. Find a better instructor that wont make jokes about violence.
Best Calculus teacher at Sierra. I wish I could take him for Math 31 but it doesn't fit with my other classes but he still meets with me and answers my questions. Absolutely take him 10+
So far his class is very fun. Lectures are clear and he takes time to answer all questions. He has 8 Quests (quiz/test combo) and drops lowest 3. We just had our 1st one and it was groups and he gave us tons of extra time to finish. Really nice caring professor.
Very casual comfortable class. Homework not graded but do them all because he uses some of the problems directly from the book on the quizzes and answers (evens and odds) are all posted on his web site.
By far the best professor I've ever had. Great lectures, good sense of humor, answers questions well. Grading policy is best part: 8 quizzes make up your final grade. lowest 3 scores are dropped, all quizzes are curved, some are group quizzes and some are take home. Just be careful. No required homework, its easy to fall behind in understanding.
Great teacher and great person. Always available for help 4-6 everyday. With his grading system and the fact that many of the quizzes are groups it is impossible to fail his class. We just completed 5 of 8 quizzes and I already have an A no matter what happens the last few weeks. Fun lectures with lots of jokes. He does swear so be ready.
A very nice and friendly professor who obviously loves teaching and interacting with students. The tests (quests) are very difficult. None of the homework is graded, but if you want to do well on the quests, do the HW. If you prefer a more traditional teaching style, don't take Buchwald. Don't fall behind, devote time outside of class.
Over half the class dropped. He's a friendly guy but his tests are absolutely brutal.
His classes are the best by far. I had him for both 30 and 31 and I am now taking his 32 class. He is amazing! He explains everything and is always willing to answer any question. The best part is he has NO TESTS! Seriously he doesn't even have a mid term or a final. He only has a quiz every other week (8 total) and the 3 lowest get dropped.
10/10 Absolutely take his class! His lectures are fun and he does not require any stupid online homework program. In fact he doesn't even require a textbook. Everything is on his webpage including homework solutions. Easy A if you just take notes, do the homework, and ask him questions if you get stuck.
If you want to make it through, Chuck will pull you through. Fun environment, tough quizzes but curved and open note, some take home, some group, some dropped, etc. Very accessible and approachable, wants to be interrupted with questions. Perhaps not the best choice for math majors, but fantastic for people who struggle in math. Great lectures
I really liked Chuck. He was super awesome and very accommodating to every students individual situation. He's updated his curriculum to the ever changing landscape. I really liked how he had a 'pronouns' section on all of the homework, quizzes, and exams. I will never forget this class.
He is a great professor; his lectures are enjoyable, and he knows what he's talking about. Your grade is entirely based on 8 quizzes, "quests" as he calls them; he drops your lowest 3 and grades them all on a curve. Quizzes are quite hard, but he usually takes one directly from homework. He gives away free textbooks, so you pay nothing.
Took a summer class. If you do not have time to practice on your own, do not take this class. 6 quests, one of which is dropped. You are given a group one, don't expect too much, must study on your own. Very fast pace. Take only if you sure you'll pass. Has a curve, which might help you, but do not expect to pass simply because of it.
Agree with previous. Good professor but summer class is very fast. Way too much homework to get done in one night. He used to allow notes on quests but now he gives everyone the same formula sheet. His curve is a must because average score was below 60 for every quest before I dropped.
Took over summer .. it was a really fun course. Very friendly and nice teacher. I think about 23 out of the 35 people in my class decided to drop the class, leaving about 12 people left. If you can do all the homework and practice problems, you will do well. You can drop one quest which was good bc I had to go on a trip during one of the quests.
Chuck is a great person, but an iffy Professor, I really disliked his style of teaching and have failed 2 of his classes now. Grades are based on 6-8 test scores and that is it with one or two dropped. These tests are incredibly difficult and feel out of left field half the time. Outside class one on one/ tutoring did not help me pass, good luck!
Unless you already know the course material well before taking the class do not take him. Tests are biweekly and supposedly based on the homework but often comes out of left field. Sometimes is forced to pass his students by the dean but I wouldn't count on it. Lectures also only go over about two problems which is not enough for his tests. Avoid!
He curves everything that does not get 70% average and gives group and take home quizzes. No tests and NO FINAL. I wish I could have taken him for all of my math classes! Extremely nice guy and rather generous with grading. He uses a 0-5 point scale so small errors make it tough to get an A, but almost guaranteed pass.
save yourself from mental torture and don't take him, he seems friendly, but he is tenured, so he does not care about the students.
Great professor. Even students that fail still take his class again which is crazy given all the other choices. He is always wiling to help students staying super late - 10:00 pm and later. I don't get the low ratings. Calculus is hard but he drops 3 lowest grades. Passing is certain for any real STEM major that knows how to do homework.
Worst class I have taken by far. Wish he gave more than a few examples in class. Would not take again.
He is a very good teacher, and admits when he makes mistakes, and explains most things very clearly. He grades on a total of 5 out of 8 tests, and the lowest 3 scores are dropped. As long as you ask questions he will explain everything, and in case you can't he has a discord page for your specific class as well as plenty of TAs. Very fun teacher.
Exams contain Algebra and Trig that is not reviewed in class nor seen in the optional homework assignments. Chuck missed several classes without prior notice, so the class would show up pointlessly... I could go on, or I could say that more than half the class dropped out, and that speaks for itself. He is a super fun professor, though!
Chuck is a fun guy, but his quizzes are made of problems that are a lot harder than students are ever exposed to elsewhere. He seems to think that a C is a great grade for the class, which is the minimum grade for most prereqs at Sierra College, so effectively passing the class requires a student to be in the top half due to his curve on quizzes.
Amazing! Broke his arm and still lectured with his left hand - no other teacher would have done that! He drops lowest 2 scores and grades are curved so passing is almost guaranteed for any math or science major. His quizzes require knowledge of all trig and algebra and Calc 1, so don't take him unless you are really strong with previous classes.
Very accommodating caring professor. Easy grading with no tests and no Final Exam only 7 quizzes. I really didnt do the homework but I still got a C. Chuck was always willing to answer questions and help students understand..
decent math teacher, but i cannot stress enough on why u shouldn't take him if u want to transfer. few people earn Bs (only a student or two will get an A). ur gpa WILL suffer, as will ur mental health. do not take him.
Be sure to always show up to Chuck's class! He's always willing to answer your questions and he hangs out before and after class so you can ask him questions. I do recommend seeing his pass peer outside of these hours since he usually just hangs out and chats during office hours, but he's a fun guy and he's always willing to help!
The professor is super fun and accommodating, though his tests can be tough if you're not familiar with the material. Luckily, Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for study prep and review. Definitely put in the work, and you'll walk away with a solid grade.
His teaching style is very hit or miss depending on the student, but what you cover in class does not prepare you for his tests. The homework he assigns does a marginally better job, but it's near impossible to prepare yourself for the tests in a meaningful way. Not enough time in class going over test-like problems instead of introductory problems
Chuck is a very kind and caring person but his teaching does not go towards his quests (quizzes/tests). People within this class are barely squeezing by with a C and your GPA will suffer. I would say I am pretty good at math but this class left me confused. If possible I would take Waterson or Lucero as they explain the material better!
So I am dropping his class BUT I am going to retake it next semester. He is a great teacher and went over the gaps that I had during office hours. Only 7 tests, no mid terms or finals, and he drops the 2 lowest tests but you NEED to know the material from calc 1. Be 100% confident in your trig, derivatives, and integrals or you will fall behind.
Love Chuck but oh my god the grading can be infuriating when most people are praying for the curve to save them and the few people retaking the class or are high school prodigies are getting 100s and hurting the curve. Please man if you're reading this make the quests a teensy bit easier :(
This professor is extremely difficult. He admitted to his students that almost no one gets an A in his class and only around 50% pass in some way. His quests are notoriously difficult can he gives no extra credit. He has no graded homework so all of you grade is reliant on those difficult quizzes/test which occurs every other week.
I would not recommend Chuck to anybody. I have never had any issues scoring well in math classes until I took this class. The only things that are graded are the "quests", which are short 5-10 question quizzes/tests. The lectures go over the basics well but do not prepare you for the difficulty of the quests.
Chuck is a great guy. While he does teach decently most of the time, the material we cover in class is NOT even close to the ones he gives on the test. Other than that, expect around 60 questions for each homework (to be prepared for the test). EXPECT the test to be insanely brutal. I dropped out when there were around 4 students left in the class.
The people giving these reviews are weenie hut juniors. If you don't get an A in chuck you have soft hands.
Easiest class of my life. I made ts my dog. Chuck didnt know god could grace someone with so much greatness and humility until i walked through his door. Everything is graded off 5 tests which are pretty light (disregard the other reviews) if you study once every other week. If you drop his class youre a BUM
Great professor, I could always follow his lectures and be ready for an easy class because he drops two of the tests/quests. Just study and do some homework and you'll do fine in the class.
Easiest class of my life, I am honestly baffled at previous ratings on here. Bro drops 2 tests that he calls quests. All tests 5 problems or less. Teaches with no shoes on and shorts that go down to his ankles. Funniest prof I done ever had made haha funny jokes during class about dividing by zero - "Houston we have a problem" ezpz lemon squeezy.
AVOID!!! ALL OF THE REVIEWS BELOW ME MUST BE TROLLS! MAKES TESTS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE AND HAD OVER HALF THE CLASS DROP. ANYONE WHO GETS AN A IN THIS CLASS MUST BE SMURFING OR CHEATING. IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE THIS CLASS I'M SO SORRY BUT RIP YOUR GPA THAT's ALL I CAN SAY.
He is a great professor. I took him for Calculus 2 and 3. There is no final. There are 7 quizzes, 2 of which are dropped, and 2 are take-home or group quizzes. Just study and you'll be fine. It's honestly kinda hard not to get an A lol.
worst class i have ever taken. words cannot truly describe my experience with this professor.
Not accesible outside of class and had to drop out of his class before it took out my GPA
Good profesor, drops two lowest scores, even tho big work load.
Buchwald makes the class easy if taken online. He explains all the material well in such a nice and precise manner. Additionally, he drops your lowests test scores making passing much easier
GOAT professor. NO MIDTERMS NO FINALS QUIZZES WITH VERY FEW PROBLEMS Makes the class easy if you spend all The at time grinding calculus
All you need to do in Chucks class is to not really pay attention to the lectures and try practicing harder problems yourself as he lectures, since the lectures are useless for the quests. Ask him a bunch of questions since he is a really helpful and good professor.
Best lecturer ever, I learned a lot from his lectures which helped me get motivated to study more math. The quests are not that bad if you really are motivated to take math and plan to use it. This professor is also very caring and helpful. MUST TAKE!!!
IF YOU WANT AN EASY A FOR CALCULUS TAKE IT WITH CHUCK, HE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!
NO 1 PROFESOR AT SIERRA COLLEGE, HIS CLASS IS VERY HELPFUL, HE DROPS 2 LOWEST SCORES, AND IF YOU LOCK IN AND GRIND YOU WILL EASILY GET THE A!!!!!!!
FUNNY, good lecturer, GOOD at explaning, very helpful, and very caring. Chuck does everything perfectly that makes math more entertaining and useful.
Chuck is a great teacher but do not take his class if you want to keep your grade up. Some of the smartest people I know barely passed his class, some even failed. You are only graded on his tests which he grades extremely tough so to pass you need to spend all your time studying math. Great guy, overly tough professor.
Never took him, but what are lecture problems like in contrast to test ones based on reviews any examples.
easiest class ever taken best profesor the top g profesor
Test Graded On Curve WHICH MADE IT SUPER EASY, I WAS ABLE TO GET A LOT OF A and B ON TESTS CUZ OF IT THANK YOU SIERRA FOR THIS PROFESSOR.
the most inspirational math teacher i had, curves a bunch of tests, makes a bunch of funny lectures, and gives out s lot of homework that can help me succeed in the class
worst professor ever.
hardest professor for math at sierra. lectures were horrible and hard to understand, i wish i took another professor.
The teacher is nice but the instruction of the class is horrible. As a result of this class, my appreciation for math disappeared. Like many reviews said previously, this class is graded on a curve, however, many kids end up dropping after the first two weeks, and many more after. So you will end up fighting the curve against the "smart" kids.
Buchwald is a consummate scholar whose intellectual acumen is matched only by their unwavering dedication to students' development. Their lectures are both enlightening and stimulating, fostering profound critical thinking. Beyond pedagogy, they offer mentorship, inspiring students to cultivate a lasting passion for knowledge and growth.
Good person, strict professor. Heard he rigs a bunch of tests where it is nothing like the lecture. Additionally, i also heard that if he says somethings not gonna be on the test, he puts it. Tip for anyone taking that class, assume the opposite of what he says
Honestly felt like he was trying to trick students on purpose, which is so weird to say about a teacher. I think this guy enjoys being considered a "tough" teacher - like some kind of superiority thing. Would not recommend at all. Math is hard. Don't make it harder.
pls sierra fire him
Despite a broken arm in a sling, Professor Buchwald captivated his class with passion and resilience. His lectures on calculus were vibrant, and he improvised brilliantly, solving equations verbally. His dedication inspired students, proving teaching is a matter of the heart.
BESTUUU TEACHAAAAA!!!!!!!
Chuck is kind and cares about student success. Very tough class with hard tests. Grades are based on biweekly tests (7 total, 2 lowest dropped), one group test, and one take-home. Getting an A requires extra effort and a strong math foundation. Despite excelling in prior math classes, I struggled throughout the term and was failing until the final.
CHARLES THE MAN THE LEGEND!
Very Very Helpful professor who is very karing to his st
EASIEST CLASS EVER. He grades it on a curve make it so much easier to pass, his lectures are very helpful and his homework even much more. He also has peer tutors that also help
Funny and Insprational teacher who really want his students to succeed which is why he curves the grade
Calc 2 or should I say Algebra 2. This class was soo damn easy and Chuck made it even more easy
Awesome!!!!! He has office hours that you can ask for help as well as Amazing!!!! peer tutors
thanks Chuck for making math my favorite class to have. Thank you for making it more entertaining and interesting.
Although I failed the class Chuck still was able to make it entertaining, all you got to do is do the homework and your good which I didn't do
Most Efficient Proffesor I had for all my calc classes. He makes it so easy since it is curved.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. It feels like the professor wants you to fail as the tests are way too hard. I don't know what's up with these reviews down here cause that was a crazy experience. Never again.
Chuck is a very resourceful professor. He is a cool and kind person, he also teaches the course pretty well, but as long as you review your algebra and trig from previous courses as well as do the optional homework assignments, this class should be a piece of cake.
A professor who puts a lot of effort into teaching Calculus!!, he broke his arm and still managed to teach, 90% of professors would have not been able to do that. But thanks to Chucks dedication into helping his students, I was able to get a solid grade in that class due to how good of a professor he was. Wish he taught Linear Algebra.
Professor Buchwald may seem hard, but in reality you just have to know your algebra, trig from previous classes such as Precalc since his quests contain material from those units. Additionally, he is very kind and understanding to his students, always willing to help them when they are struggling.
Chuck is a nice guy,but must be offering compensation for these reviews.Grades on 8 quests,2 dropped and on a curve but these quests are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.Due to the curve,if you are not in the upper half of the class, you don't pass period.Way More then half the class dropped.Avoid unless you are really good and passionate about math
Best profesor his teaching can solo goku
I was not good at math and motivated but taking this class with chuck made me more in love with math, he made it easier and he gave me more motivation 2 study.
All though i almost failed calc ii, it was my fault for not really studying the material. If i had paid more attention to chuck and did the homework, i could have easily gotten an A since his teaching is good, he curves the scores, and is also really funny.
His tests are not that bad if you put in the effort to actually study + he curves it meaning you could get an A with a bunch of effort. His teaching is very useful and you can ask him questions and he will give you the answers, maybe even ask him for older tests from previous years and he will likely give it to you.
If you put the effort and at least try in this class, then this class would be an easy A. I didnt do much of the homework but barely passed with a C. Chuck is a very kind professor who is willing to help students who are struggling with math and wants you to succeed.
Chuck makes class engaging with his dynamic teaching style and genuine enthusiasm for the material. He's incredibly caring, always checking on students' progress, and his generous curve makes getting an A attainable.
Ignore all the negative reviews for Chuck. Chuck made the quests easier since many students were complaning about how hard his quests are, he is often avalable for office hours and since lots of students dont really put the effort to study. Thats why his fail rate is so high. He is a good professor, caring, and curves quests so it can be easy.
This professor is good at teaching and lecturing calculus. His homework really prepares me for the quests/exams well. However, study algebra and trig prior to taking his class and your grade will not be as bad. Trust. He is also very caring, willing to help students succeed, and always avalable to offer old quests if you ask for it.
His grading is curved to show that he cares for the students success and futures. His lectures may not be helpful, but if you put the effort and hard work into this class as well as visit his office hours and get help from peer tutors very often. Then getting an A or B in this class is a must.
I ended up getting a C in this class, but thats mainly due to the fact that I barely put any effort into studying for chucks class. Grade is based on 7 quests with 2 of them dropped and he even curves it!! Additionally, he is a great professor who really wants you to learn and understand the material.
Chuck is the goat of all sierra college professors. He is extremely caring to his students and he wants you to succeed. Additionally, there is no midterm and final for this class, only 7 quests which 2 are dropped which is easy to get an A if you put the effort in his class. But prior to taking the class, review calc 1 and trig to be prepared.
Greatest proffesor i ever had here for calculus
Chuck was able to teach well, even if he broke his arm. He really actually cared about his students! Also, grades are curved in his class and if you do the homework and extra practice or ask for old quests, you can get an a in this class.
Best professor ever, easy quests, easy content, very caring, was able to pass because of the goat chuck buchwald
Best professor that his teaching can solo deku, goku, saitama, gojo, and naruto
Take chucks if you want an easy a, he curves grades, hes caring, and he goes in depth with the content
Chuck is a free A if you do the homework, pay attention to the lectures, as well as review algebra and trig concepts 2 weeks before taking the class
His tests have gotten easier than what people say, most of the questions are taken directly from the homework which would guarantee an A if you put effort to understand the material.
Chuck is the best, he is caring and makes calculus so easy. I dont get the negative reviews with him.
top 2 professor tbh, his teaching is great, he made the quests easier since he understands how hard calculus is and he cares about his students by providing office hours, a tutor, and review that is needed to pass with an or a b
best goated professor he solos deku!!!
Chucks grading has became pretty light, based on quizzes, some of them curved, take home, and group quizzes making this class easy. His lectures are also helpful and make me learn better.
Greatest professor, he made tests easier nowadays because he saw the low ratings.
Chuck has some issues, I took him three times for this class. Homework is mandatory do not let the fact that it isn't graded fool you, you will need to dedicate a lot of time to homework and give your life to it. Tests are way too hard for what they are. He's a nice person but he is a tough professor. Do not take it unless you are willing to work.
Professor Buchwald is incredible! Super clear, passionate, and always willing to help. He makes tough topics feel manageable and truly cares about his students. Highly recommend!
chuck is a great professor who explains things clearly and makes the material manageable. his tests are easier than expected and he's always helpful. definitely recommend taking his class.
Chuck has a fun lecture style and knows how to present calculus in an interesting/engaging way. The thing is, he conjures his bi-weekly quests with murderous intent. Having a solid foundation in trig and algebra is a must.
Chuck is the goat professor. His quests are very simple and elementary, and makes learning fun.
Chuck is a great lecturer. He is constantly looking for questions and is a funny guy, but anyone saying his test are easy are insane. I went to the math center and i told them my professor and they said “take the two hardest questions on the homework and combine them” and that's exactly how it was. he's cool asf tho and does curve grades.
"He was a very strict teacher but was fabulous at teaching. I was just bad at math." - Anon
Good teacher. Informative teacher. The kind that would really set you up for the next class as you don't have to frantically pick up on topics other teachers failed to teach you. That being said, Chuck is a devious pitcher when it comes to quests. Curve ball after curve ball as your half trying to solve the problem and half trying not to tweak out.
Chuck is a funny and good guy, but his course structure isn't for the weak. His quests [quiz/test with 5-6 questions] are difficult, and they made up our entire grades. Half the class withdrew, and the quests made me start believing in god again. Those taking this class need to be good test-takers, disciplined, and strong in algebra & precalc
This class is a nightmare for those who are not confident in math. Lessons are rushed, while lectures are mainly taking 30-45 mins solving one problem. Grades are based off "quests" quiz+tests bi-weekly. No homeworks, no exams. There are homeworks you can do as practice and they are enormous. There are a total of 8 quests and he drops the 3 lowest.
ONLY take this class if you have a solid understanding of all algebra and trig. He makes lectures easy, and the quizzes hard. Even if you study the old quizzes and homework, it's not enough. Although I put in a lot of effort studying, I still failed the tests. He's fun and caring, though.
Super funny. Clear and informative lectures. Lots of optional homework and quizzes every other week but if you put in the work you'll be fine.
His "quest" or "tests" are a lot harder than they need to be.
Need a very solid understanding for you to pass the class. At least 1/3 of class dropped. Grading rubric is very unforgiving. Only 7 "Quests" worth 4-7 questions bi-weekly that he tweaks from homework, nothing else to make up for grades; no other work, test corrections, or extra credit. Drops the 2 lowest grades but people still pray for the curve.
Buchwald's class structure is a mess and doesn't accurately assess a student's knowledge on the material. Your entire grade is determined by only a few tests with only a few questions which means a students entire understanding of calculus II is based off of about 20 difficult questions and you take 8 within the first two weeks. Class avg is 30&50%
Professor Charles Buchwald demonstrates exceptional skill in teaching Calculus II, blending deep mathematical insight with clear, structured explanations that make complex topics approachable. His lectures balance rigor and accessibility, fostering both conceptual understanding and technical proficiency.
Mr Buchwald he good at teachin calc 2. He make hard stuff easy. He help us when we dont get it. Class fun and he nice. I like math cause of him.
I am a math tutor who received A's in Calc 1/2. Save yourself and do NOT take Buchwald. I studied every variation of past tests and all the homework yet averaged C's because he lectures for half the class time on EXAM DAYS, leaving no time to finish or go back to problems. He is fully aware his class is a GPA-killer and seems to take pride in it.
I really enjoyed Chuck's class this semester. His lectures are very interesting, and he always answers any questions in full. You definitely have to put some time aside for the homework, but the quests (quiz/tests) are based on the homework questions, and they are graded on a curve. I am excited for his class next semester.
Chuck's class is HARD. I got A's in College algebra, trig and pre-calc with very minimal study time and Chuck's class had me putting in 15+ hours a week for a C. I am transferring to ARC continue math courses because I fear Chuck's classes. He's very funny, answers questions passionately and is kind but man his class is not for the weak.
The only thing he graded were his "quests" at first glance this would seem like the easiest class ever, however, these quests are the hardest things I've ever taken in my life. They're usually 4-5 maybe 6 if he decides on giving one extra question for "extra credit" but they were super difficult and I've had experience through AP Calc BC.
WARNING: DO NOT TAKE CHUCK IF YOU PLAN TO TRANSFER TO A UC. Upon transferring, I was asked to give them the syllabus for my MATH 32 course to get credit for it. After reviewing it, they denied me credit due to the fact that Chuck does not give cumulative final exams. So I just spent the last quarter having to retake Calc 3. Just a waste of time.
He's a really great lecturer, fast-paced, but he answers all questions as best as he can and rlly wants you to do well. Always there to help during office hours, gives out plenty of resources and practice material. 7 quests (tests) for your grade, 1 of which is a group test, 1 is a take home, all curved, and he drops the worst 2 scores at the end.
You HAVE to do the posted HW. Its technically optional, but theres no way to pass without it. Highly recommend you do all available. Hes pretty funny and enthusiastic, but wow this class was difficult. At least 2-3 hours a day, 7 days a week of studying to get an A. First class I had to put serious lock in effort into. Recommend tho
