Very Good teacher. Makes Chemistry easy to learn. Very dry humor too!
Hard to understand when lecturing. curves tests (summer term)
Excellent professor
Great professor. Ask him for extra credit assignments and pay attention in class.
amazing teacher..took course at ucf and it was horrible and i withdrew, hes a great teacher makes chem easy..took in summer and got an A..definetly take him
He is the best chemistry professor at FAU. He has great research skills, a good sense of humor (very dry) and exceptional teaching skills. It is great to know that FAU cares enough to put the best professor in the Gen. Chem classes. Take him.
Difficult and time consuming class, but you couldn't ask for a better professor. His facetious remarks and chemisty-related jokes make the class more enjoyable than it is with other professors.
He was an excellent professor with a great sense of humor and he really got me interested in chemistry. He also doesn't disciminate against you because of your beliefs unlike some of the other profs. in the Chem. Depart. Great professor & researcher
He is the BEST Chem professor on campus - and likely the best overall. Great researcher in science and Fellow of ACS. His sense of humor is great and he is better than any of the alternatives. His classes are tough but worth it.
He is the best professor to take in chem. if you want to actually learn the material. His classes are tough but well worth the investment. Best professor I had at FAU.
ok sense of humor. Teaches by giving example problems, but skips around a lot. Good guy.
His class is well worth taking any time of the year. I learned my love of science and chemistry from him and learned a lot. Thank you, Dr. C. He is the BEST professor at FAU par none.
Lesson plan does not follow syllabus. Impossible to prepare for class. Does little actual teaching, then works lots of problems. If he's the best FAU has to offer, I'm leaving for another school! Worst Chem teacher I've ever had. No, worst teacher of anything I've ever had.
Completely prepares you for tests. Practice problems are identicle, some are even on the actual test. Do OWLS and practice problems and your set.
isnt specific
he vary kool,nice & great.
DO NOT TAKE ANYONE ELSE FOR CHEM....HE IS THE EASIEST BY FAR

I agree that he is the best professor in the department. He is fair, knows the material, and has actually done real research unlike many of the other professors although he does not brag about his research. In a department where discrimination is so rampant and the administration does not seem to care it is refreshing to have someone like Dr. C.
Not the best teacher at explaining stuff but he's good enough for you to understand the overall concepts. EASIEST Professor you will ever see in Chemistry.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He is very intelligent, but he doesnt know how to teach at an intro level. He lectures the entire time and is very senile.
If you are not an ace in Chem don't take this instructor. This guy covers up the overhead with his hands so you break your neck trying to see his scribble. Overall, would not take him ever again....Huchital is the best b/c of his organization in teaching the concepts
Pretty easy class. The professor is somewhat boring but as long as you attend the last class before each exam, he does a decent review. His TAs also offer a review where the questions come right out of the study guide! Girish Barot is another TA who does the grading for the labs and is VERY understanding as long as you send him an E-mail.
this class is pretty easy. hes a really nice guy and his tests are easy as long as you show up to class the week before the exam because he reviews suing the overhead and the questions are pretty much the same. class is kind of boring and he goes off topic alot. but i recommend taking him.
He can be extremely helpful whenever you have questions. Occasionally, he'll lecture about irrelevant and boring things, but he makes clear the stuff you need to know for the exams. Also, he reviews all the information right before the exam to catch everyone up.
Gives good reviews. Easy class.
I liked him much more than Haky. He knows what he is talking about and treats students fairly. If I could take more classes from him then I might have stayed as a Chemistry major. Only prof. at FAU nominated for a Nobel prize. Maybe one day he can win it.
He was great to take. Fun class and informative. I thought that it was funny that he is the most published prof. at FAU and yet he is teaching a Freshman level class. I looked up some of his articles and found that he was even nominated for a Nobel price in 1998 but didn't win. He was one of 16 orginal Fellows of the ACS. Dry sense of humor.
Great class to take! He has a dry sense of humor but he gives the easiest take home labs ever! Just go to class because while he is lecturing he gives hints as to what will be on your exams and even gives great exam reviews! I would recommend this professor to anyone!
Expect to learn a lot from him. He does have a dry sense of humor and also knows a lot. He is fair unlike many of the other profs in the Department and does not disciminate based upon religion or race.
Horrible teacher. dry sense of humor. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
The class is flat out boring. But I made F's on all the tests and he passed me with a C. Very nice professor but has a dry sense of humor. Dont buy the texttbook, but DO ALL THE LABS. They are really easy and u can bs the information and still get an A.
His classes are very boring, they will put you right to sleep. He teaches as if he is talking to a team of scientist with PhD's, and is not good with explaining the material. He is a really nice guy but shouldn't be a teaching this subject. He does make some things seem easier though i.e. solubility.
he goes off on random tangents about polyethylene and other random subjects you could care less about. However he is a great professor, and his tests are fair. He's not one of those teachers who will quiz you on something you never learned and his in class reviews are helpful. Would highly recommend
good teacher
He goes off on random stories, and he tells really corny jokes. But other than that, he actually teaches material that will appear on the test. His tests are easy... way better than Haky
This class is really boring. His notes are not really clear, but you will need them for the exams. Especially the review notes. Do all of the labs, because that is what will help you if you fail the exams. I personally had to read the book, to do good on the exams but thats just me.
didn't use book, need lab book, only need study guide book if not going to attend classes
I took contemp. chemical issues w/ him.He doesnt explain anythin well and is VERY BORING! he never takes attendance..there r 3 tests and take home labs due every thurs. Its hard if you are bad at science and dont pay attention but there are reviews + he curves grades at the end. dont buy the textbook, waste of $, just get the lab book
BORING! he talks like u know wuts goin on, u have to let him know: "hey. im not an expert remember?!" but hes nice. its easy to fail cuz there r no assignments/quizes; just 3 exams.i had 2 get help 4m classmates 2 understand sumthin so simple but sounded like chinese when he explained it. exams r easy if u get chm & his reviews help 4 exams
He was very boring. I never used the book, only the thin workbook written by him, that was all I needed, class was a waste of time since all what he did was read the workbook and go into detail. My advice is read the workbook section ahead of time and if you dont get it go to class. Also go 2 days before the exam for identical 'previous' exam ?s
Great teacher, nice guy, good curve at the end
Class is boring & teacher goes on random tangents however, I thought the class was pretty easy and required minimal work. I barely studied and still ended up with a B in the class, I little more effort towards his test would have landed me an A. Go to atleast 2 of his study sessions for each test! & Do ALL the labs! Don?t buy the book!
very boring but curves the overall grade nicely.... Not a bad class
I love Prof. Carraher because he is kind and loves chemistry so I don't have to. Do labs and go to class. Take additional notes in your notebook but didn't use the book. Regret buying it. Do labs. Put in the effort and don't be an idiot to him and you will be fine. He's not looking to fail you. Things get harder though as class goes by. Nice class.
For physical Chem. He was a decent instructor although at times the material seemed to get lost in his stories. The book was not helpful and you needed to come to class to know what was going to be on the test. Furthermore, he was a very nice person and gave his assistance if needed.
Nice man. Passionate about his work with industrial polymers. Easy going and lectured on material that appeared on the exam. An easier chemistry class, but you still gotta work.
I disagree with the statement about "real" chemistry. Take a look at his record. He is the ONLY prof. at FAU who you can take who has an official nomination for the Nobel Prize & has more than 1000 pubs. I had him for 2 classes and certainly learned REAL chemistry from him. He is your best bet if you want to publish as well.
He is inpirational as a researcher. Imagine FAU having the only Florida employee to receive an official nomination for a Nobel prize - and then being able to take a general class from him!
Brillant man. Yes, he is old but by far the most educated professor Ive had. Dont bother buying the textbook, just his lab notes and the lab book. 3 or 4 tests plus 10-ish labs that you can BS and still get full points for. Mandatory is a must (its boring but only 50 minutes!)
The class is extremely boring && a bit difficult but it is definitely passable. 2 tests plus the final(which is cumulative!) && 10 labs due every week. The labs are VERY easy, you can pretty much bs the info && still get the credit. Carraher is not the worst but he's just boring. He does curve the overall grade nicely though.
This teacher is amazing.. he's so funny, you don't have to go to any of the classes, and he curves your final grade wAY high. If he likes you he gives you an A. :) just do all of the labs and go to his reviews two days before the test. you'll be fine
Having him for intro to chem he does not take the time to make sure you understand, he makes things seem much more complicated than it really is. If it weren't for the SI reviews I would be screwed in his class. I believe he is so smart that he has trouble simplifying material so people who don't have prior knowledge in chemistry can understand.
The class itself may be very boring, I personally was extremely annoyed at how everyone talked over him and showed him no respect. He's very intelligent. Doesn't always explain things well; you NEED to ask questions. I recommend going to his office hours for extra help. He's very funny and helpful. And if you PAY attention in class, you'll pass. :)
his class needs to give him more respect. most amazing, nicest, funniest man. real loves what he teaches and is more than fair to his class. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! took him for my first class of my freshman year and I'm very grateful for such an awesome helpful teacher
DO ALL THE LABS. He uses your grades on them to throw on a big curve at the end of the year. I would have failed the class otherwise. Don't buy the book, just get the study guide and the lab book.
Kind of a joke. I hate to be mean, but I learned nothing from going to class. He's hard to understand and everyone talks over him so you can't hear him. DO AL THE LABS. pay attention to the two classes before the exam where he reviews the actual ques coming up, and just buy the lab book and study guide. Easy A if you make some effort
This guy is very monotone. He makes jokes that you can't understand and then explains them instead of teaching. His test aren't hard as long as you try to attend the class before the test. Do all the labs! It is well worth it in the end and boosts your grade up at least 1 letter!
Very monotoned which makes it extremely difficult to go to his class if you have him early in the morning. Likes to make things harder than what they are. His Hand writing gives me nightmares.
Class is a joke. The labs are elementary school level, but the information on the tests is college-level. His handwriting is chicken scratch. He's monotone and boring. He makes every lesson more complicated than it should be. Just get the lab book and the study guide, don't buy the text book. Overall, the class was a waste of time.
Sweetest Professor. Very knowledgeable about his topic, but sometimes expects you to know some things without learning it prior. Ask questions. Do all the labs! At least half is enough to pass. Two tests, one final, difficulty increases throughout semester but still passable course. DONT buy textbook! Never use it, but yes for the study guide book
Just buy the study guide and lab book. do all the easy labs, and go to class the 2 classes before the exams where he gives out questions to the test. you almost never have to go to class
he is an overall great professor. he makes class somewhat funny with his corny jokes. he is clear with his lectures and is very helpful. don't buy the book. buy mastering chemistry online. good class.
Got an A- on the first test...and I'm not good with chemistry really! Very nice, funny, answers questions decently. Labs are fun and easy. Not the most interesting subject. Take for easy lab, not a time consuming class. Ask questions right away when you don't understand something. Don't really need textbook; study guide is essential and lab manual.
I had him for intro to chemistry and honestly he was one of the worst teachers I have ever had...he is very monotone and too smart for his own good, meaning that he doesn't dumb it down for everyone else. I had zero interest to even attend. I had to use the online homework he gave us to teach myself. STAY AWAY.
If you read the material and keep up with the homework this class is super easy. I received an easy A. He does everything at a REALLY slow pace, so if you don't get it the first time you can guarantee you will after the 30 more problems he does before the test!
This class is a waste of time. It was way too difficult for a science class for non science majors. Don't buy the textbook! He is very monotone and expects you to know a lot about chemistry going into the class. Avoid this class at all cost!
He's quite clear and concise when explaining the concepts and incorporates his life story into the lectures which makes them really interesting. I never looked at the textbook, but at the study guide which has all of the concepts organized how they are taught in the class. All information on the tests was covered in class, but not in the book.
Professor Carraher was EXTREMELY helpful. He went out of his way to explain everything to me. You don't use the book AT ALL for the class, so don't buy it. -.- The TA wasn't helpful at all, though. I needed help and he didn't bother to work around the both of our schedules. Just go to Professor Carraher if you have any questions. :)
Dont take this teacher. Labs are easy, but tests are extremely difficult and he is very boring. Take Life Science instead
Great professor. He explains things over and over again so it is almost impossible to not understand what he is saying. He makes funny jokes and I can tell he cared about his students. i took this class in the summer and I recommend it to anyone going into Chemistry. Taking Intro to Chemistry makes Chem 1 so much easier. Book not necessary
DON'T GO TO CLASS AND DON'T BUY THE BOOK OR STUDY GUIDE. You really need to buy the Lab book and go to class on review days and go to the TAs review session. Got an B on every test and still got an A in the class.
Such a nice guy with a cute sense of humor! Yes he's monotone and you can often hear crickets in his class, but if you need help he'll readily answer your questions. Don't need the textbook or even the study guide, I did well with just the lab manual and by going to TA Jeff's (incredibly helpful) review sessions. An easy class.
Extremely boring class. He goes off topic all the time. Test can get difficult if you don't know the material or go to the review sessions. He has an easy grading system.
Very boring.. Never really went to class. Does not count attendance.Very monotone. Do the labs, theyre easy anyways.Go to review which is usually the 2 classes before the exam but the final review he gave us was not eve relevant to the exam.. which was ridiculous.
He is boring, but a nice guy. The labs are pretty easy, but the tests are more difficult. Go to the review sessions because they help a lot, and study for the tests. You never need to use the textbook.
He is a nice guy with a kind heart willing to help his students. He is fairly old and knows his stuff. He does make something's harder than they need be and expects you to know most of the basics for a introductory course. He doesn't use PowerPoint all he does for lecture is write examples on the overhead & tests are hard!!!!! Hard earned A for me.
He's an awesome & kind old man but he makes the material a lot harder than it needs to be. First couple classes seem easy, but the class ended up becoming my hardest course. Take home labs are easy, but tests are pretty brutal. You don't learn much in class, other than exam reviews prior to exam days. Textbook isn't needed, but lecture book helps
As long as you pay attention the class isn't too bad. Hes goes off on a lot of tangents but knows his stuff. DO NOT GET TEXTBOOK. I didn't buy it and 100% didn't need it. The tests get harder and harder as the semester goes on.
So monotone... I fell asleep in this class so many times. But it might be because that was my last class of the day. Really have to pay attention in here --- he is very intelligent, I mean he wrote the book we work out of. But he goes so fast and his handwriting is horrible so it's hard to keep up. Really have to studykeep up outside of class.
This man's real old. He's a story-teller, half of the class just consists of him telling stories about his family. Starts off easy, you could get away with a B or above on his 1st test. BUT, the rest of the exams are just another language. He gives the 1st exam, a midterm and then a final. Don't worry, he curves the OVERALL class grade, not tests.
Omg this class was definitely my hardest class. I am definitely not a chemistry person and Carraher only lessened my hope that I could be good at it. The first few classes are skippable, but after the first exam, you NEED to go to class. He's a very boring lecturer and often goes on tangents about his 26 grandchildren. Nice guy, horrible teacher.
He doesn't take attendance & he has a dry sense of humor but he is the most respected chem prof at FAU & so if you want to learn chemistry then take him - AND ATTEND class. If you don't want to learn chem then take someone else. I WAS a chemistry major when I was at FAU & he provided a foundation for me to become a Research Prof. Thank you Dr C
I'm not a chemistry major so this class was tough for me. Dr. Carraher goes over a lot of material. If you pay attention to the lab directions, go to each lecture, and go to the review sessions given by Prof. Beckwith you will do great. In the review sessions she really hones in on the material you need to study for the exams.
Awesome professor; a little boring. All you have to do is attend classes on the regular & ON TIME with an open mind. He's passionate about chemistry. I didn't buy the textbook, I only purchased the workbook with the homework in it. Also stay on top of your Mastering Chemistry homework; don't wait until the last minute!
His lectures got pretty boring, so I skipped them most of the time (he takes attendance, though), but I always went to Supplemental Instruction. I basically thought myself the material using the digital homework. Practice before the test and you'll do well. The homework is pretty easy but its a lot so don't wait until the last minute to do it.
The class is boring but he teaches everything you learned from chem honors from high school
His lectures can get pretty boring, but if you have a bit of background in chemistry and are willing to teach yourself, you can easily get an A since it's just an intro course.
You will need to go to the tutoring sessions. I was failing all semester till the end. The TA never replied to the emails I sent her. Even if you do bad on the exams don't show up to class BUT do ALL of the homework you will pass the class.
The professor is very passionate about his subject and is a cool guy. Make sure you do all of the homework! He takes attendance, but you can sign in and leave. I technically failed this class with an F but ended up passing with a C+ with the curve. Attend SI and do the homework and you'll be fine!
It's hard to keep up with his lecture so attend SI session/ tutoring to pass or self taught. Especially attend SI if chemistry is your weekness.
By far the worst professor I have had in college. He has a monotone voice, is very quiet, is very unclear, extremely unorganized, very slow at talking yet he speeds through his lectures. He teaches by writing problems out on the overhead and he has TERRIBLE handwriting. It is difficult to understand him. SI and tutoring are the keys to passing!
If you have a good background in chem then this should be easy for you. However, me being new to the subject i didnt do so well. The professor is a nice person and very interesting to talk to but i found it difficult to read his handwriting and he teaches VERY FAST. I had to teach myself most topics. You should be fine if you go to SI.
Choose a different professor.
If you can avoid picking him do it. I regret it more than anything. It is miserable in every way. He has a monotone voice and you learn nothing. Hes talking about history right now in chemistry.
He's a sweet man, but hard to follow. He loves to tell stories of his family and accomplishments. While this is wonderful to hear, it is not the right setting for it, and can be confusing to follow his train of thought. If you are good at chemistry, this is an easy class; you only need to show up on the days that homework is due. If not, stay away.
Final isnt cumulative so dont waste your time studying every topic. Reconsider your choice before taking him.
I WOULD recommend this class, just dont make the same mistakes as me. Go to EVERY review session possible with the TA. She is straightforward and will tell you what is on the exam. Dr. Carraher will drag on for sometimes 30 mins about useless information. The class is easy, attendance isnt mandatory, and you can turn in the labs online.
It was hard to keep up in this class. I don't even think we had a TA, if we did then they were not very engaging or helpful. The weekly labs required you to get items and material that I felt should've been provided to us if we're paying for a lab fee in our tuition.
He just lectures the entire time. You don't have to go to class at all, only for exams. Don't buy all the textbooks, just buy the lab book. Labs are due every Friday but you can just walk in and turn it in then leave. The labs are very easy. There are also view sessions before every exam that I would 100% recommend going to.
Attendance was not needed, everyone shows up only when test taking days. Some days he'll talk and some he'll teach and show test study guide. The $200 chemistry book I didn't use ONCE. But the experiment spiral notebook is REQUIRED, you have a separate lab grade.
He is a very nice man, but not the greatest teacher. His material is hard you will have to study as much as possible. Be prepared to do an at home lab every week and confusing test. No extra credit or curving of test. Difficult.
Professor Carraher is a nice old man! Expect most of class time to just be lectures though. The 2 exams and final are just 25 questions! Study class questions and the study guide! Find ways to connect with your fellow classmates so you all will be able to understand and study the material. Don't buy/rent the big book unless you really want to.
Get the lab manual but I recommend splitting the cost with others in the class. The professor never did anything, only the TA's. Easy A, all we did was labs and they were easy. Don't fall behind and do the labs on time and you're fine. The labs had nothing to do with the tests though but you'll survive.
The TA was basically the professor for this course and graded the labs. I recommend working with other students throughout the course because that was the only way I was able to pass the class. The exams are difficult but they are open note and you are given a review. Do well on the labs, work with others and make sure you attend the exam times.
