Very clear, very precise, REALLY helpful.
Great Prof!!
Guy has more Greek in his head than I do anything in mine.
A very interesting and engaging guy. One of the few profs that I like!
Made even MMW fun
cant help the subject, cute lil prof!
Best prof I've had yet
A chummy chap, and so enjoyable to learn from. Very chill.
evil tests, but intesting lectures
Great lecturer - kept course interesting.
i actually woke up to go watch this guy talk...cuz it was THAT amazing
Witty, informative, and in tune with his students
very straightforward about what you need to know, lectures dumbed down, lists topics on the board that are important, intensive reading, quizes representative of class. easy to get B, hard to get an A
His lectures are very interesting, but his tests are kind of difficult because he expects you to dipsplay "mastery" of each subjest on the tests.
The class is great. He's so great. He really knows his stuff. I really enjoy this class because he just explains clearly. The test can be a bit long because you have to write and write and write.
Lectures a bit disorganized. But he puts terms on the board. I enjoyed his class. He was funny at times too. A good TA is a must; they grade everything.
Great professor, not afraid to challenge his students' beliefs. Lectures are very interesting, he writes a lot of Greek and Latin on the board for entertainment. Highly recommended.
Very good lecturer. He kept my attention pretty well. He seems like a friendly guy.
really nice lecturer. in fact, the best lecturer so far on MMW. however, the tests require u to study very hard. i got a B- in his class
Chamberlain's lectures are good, too bad the whole course is graded by the TA's. If you have a good TA you're good to go. A little difficult to sit through as a Christian because he isn't open to Christian beliefs; instead, he tries to prove them wrong.
This professor is great, but the class is hella hard. The reading is insane, but if u keep up, then u should be fine, but i got screwed since i didn't read as much as i should have!
VERY FUNNY AND WITTY! GREAT LECTURES THAT FACILITATE NOTE-TAKING.
Hot??? Huh??? Are we talking about the same guy? Anyway, I enjoyed his class very much. I had him for two quarters and would recommend him to anyone. His lectures are definitely interesting and easy to understand for those who
Yup, he is definitely hot for an older man. He's got style too! He's very funny and very witty. Loved his class...best humanities professor.
The best prof I had my first year. Hilarious, keeps your attention, explains course well.
he is just amazing! guys love him and girls wanna **** him. the class is very interesting and easy as long as you keep up with the reading. one of the most interesting professor's i ever had. His first love: Classical Greece Second love: Mrs.Chamberlain.
Amazing class. This proffesor is wonderful, take him if you can. He's clear and witty and intelligent as all hell. He knows EVERYTHING.
Chamberlain is amazing! He somehow found a way to make even MMW actually fun to go to. Not afraid to stir up controversy, so watch out if you're a Fundamental Christian. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Of the 5 MMW professors I've had so far, Chamberlain is one of my favorites. I found that he always reviewed the readings in a way that really made me want to read them! He's incredibly smart, and has a lot to add to the materials that really gets you thinking.
I liked this guy. His lectures were great, he was funny. Your grade doesn't depend on him, it depends on your TA, so if you're thinking about taking him, do it. He's a great guy, he even gave me bonus points for going to see him at his office hours. Really knows his stuff.
The last person doesn't know what they are talking about: CC doesn't grade anything so you didn't get any 'bonus' points by going to see him. CC's okay as a lecturer, but definitely read the books and go to section: ALL of your grade depends on them.
Very entertaining, a class I didn't dread attending. He's funny, witty, and so into his Greek stuff. Get to know him, he's cool, but TA's are the ones who grade so try to find out what they like with papers and stuff because they grade pretty harshly.
Very passionate about his subject - his office hours are very interesting. Do the suggested reading over break, read ahead of time when possible. See your TA before every essay to make sure the TA will actually like what you're writing. Study KEY TERMS for the Final! Helps to type up lecture notes.

Great professor.
I had him for Stylistics & Grammar -- GRAMMAR, MY FRIENDS -- and it turned out to be my favorite course of the quarter. Funny, easygoing, fantastic reading, great class.
Its all on the TAs otherwise his lectures kept me up and going to every class
This guy makes Latin fun, folks. Chamberlain was willing to answer any question thrown at him, no matter how random or off topic. Small class, so go to office hours! The class itself is lots of work, but worth it.
He knows his Greek. Otherwise, I don't remember much about him.
Chamberlain was a good teacher, and his exams were very straightforward. Just copy down all the words he writes on the board at the beginning of class, and study those and the readings for the test.
Chamberlain rocks! By far my favorite professor at UCSD. His lectures were interesting, he focused on learning and not on torturing students, and his enthusiasm was infectous. I highly recommend for anyone interested in the ancient world.
Has a hysterical, quarky sense of humor. I loved going to the class just for that. The essays are hard, and the final was laborious, but the lectures made it worth it.
Chamberlain has an infectious sense of humor and enthusiasm about anything he's will to teach. He is a big nerd, but so are most of his class so it's easy to identify with him. He is interesting, eloquent, and fun; by far the best professor I've had yet.
At first he seemed a little dry, but once he got going he was fairly hilarious. Learning the Bible with him was great. "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's ass." Ah, wisdom.
...For all the wonderful ratings, he seemed a bit over-rated. He IS nice, and he's definitely one of the better profs here, but I wouldnt think of him as one of the best. He's kind of old, I guess I was expecting more youthful enthusiasm and spirit. Nevertheless, interesting class, interestingly taught, easy notes, fair exams, weird picture slides.
You're not gonna get an A in HUM 1, but that has nothing to do with him. Awesome guy, lectures were unbelievably interesting. Totally recommend him.
Knowledgeable about some aspects of the course, somewhat misinformed in other areas. The TA really makes the class, and unfortunately, there aren't many great ones. Lectures are dull and uninspiring. Decent prof, but if I could do it over again I'd see if I could fit someone else in instead.
Chamberlain is a very engaging speaker and makes going to lecture interesting. Tests are fair and are represntative of the assigned reading. However, going to lecture is a must if you want to do well on tests. As is the case with MMW, the TA makes or breaks your grade, and unfortunately many of the TAs were very inexperienced this quarter.
Lectures are well organized, easy to grasp course material because of key terms listed on board before class starts. Professor is very well read and knows his**** but extremely serious. Clear speaker, clear lectures, over all good professor
lists key terms on the board before lecture, which makes studying easy. his exams are more difficult b/c there isn't enough time to finish most of it, including IDs of terms, dates, a slide, and passages from readings. however, he is very engaging, interesting, helpful, and has a delightfully dry sense of humor. grades vary greatly by each TA.
Chamberlain is an excellent lecturer who knows what he's talking about. His views are slightly eurocentric due to his immense passion for Greek topics which is his (speciality);however he lists ke y terms on the board. This class is definitely hard because of all the readings and it's really all about your TA who does the grading. But good professo
Excellent prof. Seriously knows his Greek and Roman history, fairly well versed on MMW material. Tests are long and really test what you know. Graders and TAs are key to good grades. He wants to get to know his students so talk to him, he's helpful. A must take professor if you're not afraid of a challenge. You will learn tons.
I had him for stylistics and grammar. He was definately a tough grader-one of the toughest I've had at UCSD, but I learned a ton, and he kept lectures interesting and engaging.
Get to know this wonderful professor during office hours. That's what those hours are there for, people. His lectures are extremely interesting, he lets you know EXACTLY what will be on the test with his terms, and he is amazing helpful. His tests tend to run very, very long, but he makes up for it by being such a kickass person.
Realy great Latin teacher, hard to find.
one of the most straightforward and clear professors that I've had at UCSD. Not only does he outline exactly what he'll be doing, but he is very interesting while he's givng you relevant information. This is rare!
Chamberlain is a very good professor. Very clear, although boring at times. Not too much reading, and his tests are very fair.
No lie the absolute best professor ever. I lament the fact that he's not teaching LTLA 3...SOMEDAY!! I'm pretty much in love with the man.
Great teacher. Loves subject. Easy quizzes and tests if you study. Keep up on your work, and its a really cool, different class.
Way hotter than Mercury.
great guy, go to his office hours, he really wants to get to know his students. great sense of humor and one of the most fair, humble, and intelligent professors i've had
I basically am in love with the man. I have absolutely no interest or use for Latin but I'm contemplating taking it for the sole purpose of having him as a professor again. Oh how I miss MMW2. His lecture style makes it really easy to take notes and he cracks awesome dirty jokes. Basically, TAKE HIM, NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!!
He is an amazing professor. I would love to have him be my professor again.
Very pessimistic about every topic. Lectures are hit and miss. Readings are mandatory for a decent grade.
while he does write key terms on board before lecture, lecture style is very unclear. talks WAY too fast making it hard to jot down every piece of info (and you need every detail for the midterm and final!) jumps around between topics, knows a lot about greek/latin culture but seems to be almost clueless on other regions
writes terms on the board which makes it easy to follow him in lecture. He's funny at times, dry humor. Cut and dry and straightforward gets to the point.
Though the material was intense, as always Prof Chamberlain was clear and knowledgeable. If you have an interest in the classics, he is a must. His background spans so much history and he's always so interested in what he's teaching.
I've taken CC for LTLA2 & 100 and he really is a great teacher. When I took EW(you know who he is) I sometimes dreaded going to class, but with Charles it was always a pleasure. If I had to make a recomendation to all you latin students save him for your upper divs. You'll have to bare EW in LTLA3 so might as well take him for all the lower divs.
Definitely one of the best professors I've ever had. Probably my favorite, actually. Loves his students, & a genuinely nice/fun person in office hours. He's extremely knowledgeable and if you take pretty good notes, do the readings, and actually study, you'll do great. His tests are fairly detailed, but note taking is easy if you're on your toes.
best proffesor ever. I got a C because it is a difficult class, but that's based on your writing skills. Lecture is fun, engaging, and interesting. I loved going to class because he made everything fun. Definitly take this professor. He's like the super cool grandpa you never had.
two words: ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! he's brilliant and knows as much as anyone ever will about Ancient Greece and Rome. on top of everything, he's a great guy who loves to talk to his students, and takes an honest interest in their academic careers. if you're not taking him for MMW you are missing out!!!
He is one of the best lecturers ever! If you want to do good on the midterm and the final exam, i recommend going to class because he has terms on the board and is very clear and organized when he explains them. These terms will most likely be ID's on the tests. But as for your essay grades, that really depends on your TA.
AMAZING professor! I loved his style of teaching so much I now have him for MMW 3. He is so funny, and the reader he assembles really helps you learn the material. Exams are fair. Take him you won't regret it!!
I was dying when Dr. Chamberlain said hi to me after taking the final for MMW2. Such a smart man, he translated all our readings from Greek to plain English. Lots of reading, but they're all you need to pass the tests. No multiple choice, only written response, but fairly easy. It all depends on your TA. GO TARA!
Dr. Chamberlain's teaching was very clear as he puts the main vocabulary words on the board before his lectures and follows the sequence he puts them on. The readers are appropriate. His midterms are long and require studying, but he purposely makes it hard so people will study harder for the final.
His lectures are full of information, which he tells you at a rapid pace, but he is EXTREMELY organized and lists key terms on the board. Exams are all writing, but they force you to really know what you're reading. He keeps your attention with subtle humor that you'll miss if you zone out. Very diverse interests, great professor!
Professor Chamberlain is AWESOME. Not only is he brilliant when it comes to the Greco-Roman world, but he's funny and personable too. He actually cares about his students as well. Yes, you have to read, but he makes it fun and interesting. TAKE HIM!!!!!
Awesome professor!! Really clear during his lecture (except his occasional mumbles). Podcasts so don't need to go to class. The whole test is written (emphasizes a lot of passage ID). DO THE READING!! And lectures help a lot for the terms. Need to spent a considerable amount of time reading/writing essay.
Not hot at all, hes kind of fat and has grey hair. He is a clear, although quite boring lecturer, with a hard midterm and final. Basically, do a lot of work and expect to get a B. There are better MMW profs. out there - although this one knows his stuff. He always asks himself questions, and then answers himself. Weird.
LOVE HIM! He's such a nice guy, and he's super smart!! I got an A pretty much without working too hard, AND I had a tough TA as a grader. Whole midterm/final is written and study important passage ID's! Also, know his terms really well. Take your papers to your TA's for help because that's the key to an A on MMW papers :)
