You can't go wrong with this guy
this was the most miserable class i have ever had
Interesting class w/ an Interesting Guy, not sugg. if you don't Study!!!
Excellent teacher. Great guy. Intellectually stimulating.
Great guy and challenges you mind
hated his class, had to drop it
AWESOME MAN! You tend to fail his first test if you don't read, tests are mainly on the readings, & hardly any of the lecture. Just read and you'll get an A. He is a very interesting professor & very engaging. He will work with you before tests-big help!

Dont take this guy's class. He's very closed minded, and He makes comments like.. So called God and such. Its a miserable class and its EASY to fail. GOOD LUCK!
Oh Man...this is a tough one. He is interesting and helpful. His class is hard and challenging. You must read and study or you will inevitably FAIL! Good guy though.

This guy has some major issues, not RECOMMENDED, hard as hell
worst teacher ever! rambles all class about stories that mean nothing and then gives the hardest tests
Probably the most interesting and entertaining teacher I've had. Every class is is better than most sitcoms. You know when you got a good grade that you deserved it.
The tests are short answer and essay so you have to know your ****! You must read the text and study the text to do well in the class, but you will definetly learn something
he's really nice, cept uses big words
Trust me on this one, Ive been a straight A student all of my life and even I had to drop this class. If your a liberal democrat you'll be able to put up with him. Tests are impossible, all short answer and essay, most dont make it past the short answers
WOW, he is the WORST teacher i have ever had. Ihave never dropped a class or even considered it unitl I took his class. I would recomend him to NO ONE. One our first test 14 out of 21 people got F's. Horrible man
HORRIBLE! I would never recommend him. Extremely random, nothing makes sense, and you HAVE to go to class. Extra help is absolutely NO help. Speaks above all of his students. Impossible to follow.
HELL! Drop this class!! He is the worst teacher ever! He is so random, you cant follow along with his lecture. The tests are impossible. They are all essay and short answer and you dont have enough time to answer it all. God save you if you take this class

One of the best teachers at Salisbury. brilliant and entertaining. keep an open mind and you just might learn something. not a major and I LOVED this class. no other teachers at SU could get me out of bed at 8am.
Best Teacher at SU!!!!
It is funny that people say you HAVE to come to class.Well yea what is this middle school?! Good teacher all in all. Very fair, but a tough intro. class. You WILL learn some very cool stuff though. Most entertaining prof.
he is way to intelligent to teach a 101 class. he has a great personality and lots of cool stories. all exams are in short answer and essay form, know your stuff! he encourages students to visit his office for help, visiting helps alot!!!!
He's a good teacher! He's a little arrogant and a hard grader, but he'll help you out as much as he can (specially on the paper). He knows what he is talking about, but he mainly focuses on what he thinks.
AHHHHHHHHHHH!
I had never taken a SOC class before but sociology of the environment was the best class I have taken at salisbury. I would recommend him to anyone. He was very helpful, and pretty cool too. I can see how he might not be that good with SOC 101 though.
He is very conservative and has an odd sense of humor that some students may find quirky or offensive. His whole course is three challenging essay exams and a paper.
Tough but very fair. Absolutely amazing teacher.
SOCI 324, he is a good teacher but if you are just a sociology beginner or don't like sociology, i would say start from the bottom which is 101 class, because he will expect you to know somethings in a upper division class. take the easiest class under him (SOCI 101).
hes very obnoxious and gets too close for comfort when hes talking to you. is willing to help you but i know im scared to go see him. his tests are on stuff he doesnt always teach and i would NOT recommend at all.
He is an excellent professor.I will recommend his 101 class to anyone.Talks about subjects with passion.Class is interesting. He is one of the few professors at su who will genuinly try and help you academically or in any aspects of life.
Be prepared for a class in CIPOLLAOLOGY. I've taken 3 classes- in each he talked about the exact same thing. If you have a book you should do alright on exams. Forget taking a test based on your notes because they make no sense. Lots of personal opinion, nothing really course related
He's a great professor if you are willing to open your mind and really listen. he's very interesting and has a very different approach to life. I highly recommend taking his class to anyone!
he was very nice and helpful, however his tests are so hard. There are only 3 tests and a term paper, but the tests are like 12 essay questions. It's nearly impossible to take decent notes in his class, and I would not recommend him as a teacher even though he is nice
Avoid this teacher! His tests are nearly impossible unless you have no life and study for 3 weeks in advance. Hes so conservative its discusting and highly offensive. Avoid this teacher at all costs. I dreaded his class every morning. Is willing to help if you are ballsy enough to go see him. Complete tool.
Intriguing man. He is very smart and has a lot of interesting experiences, which he will talk about in class. Notes are kinda confusing because he jumps around alot and study well for tests because there is no mult choice at all.(Meet with him, it will help) Good teacher, just almost too smart to teach a 100 level class.
lectures don't always follow syllabus, all essay tests, strange sense of humor, willing to help if you go to him
awesome guy--very into his course material. He is a very difficult professor, but it's all for good reason. I His coffe cup is seriously stained, and I don't think he ever blinks. I could see him doing a broadway production of sociology...or playing t
cipolla is a great teacher. his tests aren't hard if you read and go to class most of the time. he's an interesting guy, but don't look at the back of his office door....
One word = Horrible
Hes a good teacher and makes a subject interesting which i would never have considered to be. As long as you study, youll ace his tests
Here is the deal, read every chapter and go to every class, if you do that he is easy, and very helpful. If you don't take his class seriously, he will not take you seriously. To me, its a no brainer. Do what he tells you and you will do fine in his classes. Treat it like a joke and he will surely fail you
I loved this teacher. He is very helpful if you show him you are interested and an active participant of his class. He helped me so much with the research paper due for his class. Dont let his tough demeanor scare you, he really is a caring teacher and a very well prepared one as well
Basically what everyone else said is true. The guy cares a lot about what he teaches, and as long as you reciprocate the effort and prepare yourself you will have no problem in his classes. He goes against the grain. It's refreshing!
awesome teacher! very interesting! Just Read the book, show up to class and participate.
Incredible. Makes everything very interesting. Just show up to class, take detailed notes and read the text. It's worth it.
The most interesting teacher I have ever had in my life. You must go to every class, and you must read the entire text book, but this is college and you should expect that. He is veryhelpful if you go see him, and he is very caring for the kids who put as much effort in his class as he does. Expects a lot out of his students, and that the best part
i dont know WHAT you people are thinking. this guy is by far one of the worst teachers i have ever had. going to every class, participating, reading everything, and studying didnt help me. do NOT take this class if you believe in God and if you do, don't mention Him or cipolla will hate you. hes HORRIBLE!!!!
cipolla is cool, nice and interesting. but his gradeing ethics suck! I dont understand how a person can study study study do well and still recieve a C. He is a hard grader...so watch out. Soci. 101 is not a hard class but he believes it should be graded as a calculus class. beware
I was expecting this class to be really hard but I was very pleasently surprised. I think he gets a big kick out of trying to shock students with the things he says. If you come to class and read the textbook it's not a hard class. It's usually pretty obvious from what he focuses on that you can guess half of the questions before you even get there
it is because of cipolla i am not taking another soci class. He has a narrow way of looking at culture and if you believe in God, your asking for trouble. Class is incredibly boring and notes are difficult to take. Avoid him if you can!!! beware of his tests..all short answers and essay..no mulitple choice! and at end of sem, 5 pg paper due on book
If you plan on doign well, you have to really immerse yourself into the subject. Read the book but take good notes. Cipolla's class will open your eyes to the world. He is not against belief in god, but knows the destructive potential of organized religion... That's one of his main themes...if you payed attention.
I see the people rating Cipolla are not yet used to college procedures. Cipolla is a hard teacher, there is no doubt about that, but if you take his class seriously, go to class, and read EVERYTHING, you will do ok. Go to him for help, he gives you the answers to the test. The god stuff is garbage, get over yourselves. Take him seriously.
not clear, not interesting, jumps around a lot on notes, and i don't suggest anyone take him.
He can be quite intimidating at first, but he is a nice guy. His tests are hard, but if you pay attention during lecture you'll do fine. Use his office hours! He's very helpful, but only if you go to him.
Attendance isn't mandatory - but if you miss any classes you'll fail. His expectations really are crystal clear and if you follow his outlines you'll do very well.
Cipolaa is a hard teacher and he expects a lot from you. Don't judge him too harshly, he'll be one of your favorite teachers...he is very passionate about what he teaches and gets his students to not only work hard, but to think, not many professors have that ability. Only take him if you are a serious student, but if you do you will learn a lot.
cipolla really knows and cares about what he is teaching. its all lecture and sometimes he gets off on long tantrums, but you have to pay attention and take good notes. definitely read the book. if you do that its pretty easy. his tests are all short answer but if you have the notes and you read youll do fine.
Lectures seem pointless. He spends half the time ranting about his past and the rest of the time he spends talking about stuff thats not even on the test. If class attendence were not mandatory, you probably could never go and still get an A.
Dr. Cipolla is one of my favorite professors at Salisbury. He is very passionate and knowledgable about sociology. He'll make you want to take more soc classes. Be prepared to work hard and study, but in the end it's all worth it.
Not just a good hard class that makes you more critical and insightful, but a professor that makes you better for it. He is simply amazing.
Not one of my favorite classes. The topics are interesting but I dont like the structure of the course. The syllabi is very vague and in my opinion the entire class structure needs an upgrade. Its just not suitable to be a 100 level class. But the guy is passionate about the subject matter and he knows his stuff. Thats one of the only positives.
Wow! What a great professor! He actually teaches the material and is willing to help you with any problems or questions you may have. He'll go over your notes from class with you before the test which is extremely helpful. You must read the book, but it's a pretty easy and quick read. Great teacher, very passionate about the subject!
Dr. Cipolla is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's a little out there, and his lectures seem pointless at first, but they play into the themes of the course later on. He opens your eyes to stuff, and makes you think. He expects alot, but as long as you pay attention its easy to get an A. Take him for anything you can! Great teacher!!!!
Probably one of my favorite teachers Ive ever had. LOVED HIM! hes so so so cute! Did pretty terrible in the class, even though I went and paid attention.. I took him over a year ago and he still says hi when he sees me. I strongly suggest taking him if you want to learn, but youll have to work for a good grade.
i loved him. there is honestly not one bad thing i could say about him. i would take him as many times as possible.
amazing professor and great guy! GO TO OFFICE HOURS! he is amazing and wants you to succeed, super helpful and willing to make appointments on his day off to discuss anything you need help on! no homework, just 3 tests and a paper
The Best teacher EVER!!! I LOVED HIM!!! he is extremly helpful. "he works for you" definately go to office hours weekly, that is how I got an A in the class. he reviews your paper and notes for exam. only three exams and a paper. definately take him!!!
Awesome dude. Loves to give "out of the box" lectures, and often randomly jumps to strange tangents. This keeps class interesting though, and a lot of the stuff he says is funny. Just come to class and take notes and you'll do well. He is extremely open to helping students outside of class, and almost demands that you see him in office hours.
I love Sociology, it was always one of my favorites, but now I am not sure I will ever like it again. He spends a majority of the class yelling at his students for being born in a different era than he was. I understand the difference but i have accepted it, now he needs to. He is always there to help however he is so terrifying it doesn't matter
hands down one of my favorite professors of all time. He is passionate about Sociology and is very helpful. That being said, he only teaches in the mornings and plan to attend his class EVERY day. He uses the text heavily, and expects his students to work as hard as he does (which he does). He's your typical working stiff and loves his job.
He is a hard teacher, but by far one of the best I ever had. He is passionate about the subject. He may go off on tangents during lecture, but there is usually a point to them to help illustrate a point. I worked my butt off for this class due to the amount of text material, but it paid off. Majors benefit, but nonmajors might be scared of him.
Cipolla is a really great teacher. You really need to read in order to do well on the tests. But if you outline the book, he'll go over it an circle the important stuff which is often the test questions. He is a crazy old man and keeps class fun.
I oftentimes look back and try to remember professors that had an impact on the way I now view the world. Dr. Cipolla was the most wonderful, passionate professor I have ever had. I may have partied to hard and made bad decisions, but, I was always up and waiting in his office T/TH at 7 am with the thirst for knowledge & his eagerness to give it.
Dr. Cipola's classes changed my life. After dealing with many wierdos in the sociology department at s.u., I quickly found that Cipola was the most interesting professor I ever had. We even took canoeing trips for sociology. He is truly a mans man and if you respect him and come to class on time you are guaranteed a decent grade.
I have a lot of respect for him after taking that class. I would highly suggest taking notes from textbook and in class. They are needed for the exams. If you ever need help, e-mail him and he will be there to help you. I wouldn't say it is an easy class, but if you do your work, you will do fine. He is very dedicated.
Forget about personal feelings. Buy the book and READ IT for the exams! Or else you will fail!!! His lecture and his notes are like puzzles and you have to decipher its meaning. COME TO CLASS EVERYDAY b/c attendance is mandatory. Exams are SHORT ANSWER AND ESSAY QUESTIONS ONLY, NO MULTIPLE CHOICE! Be prepared b/c he is NOT easy.
I WOULD NOT take this class. He is very passionate about the course but it is so much work.
If you are taking this as a Gen Ed.. don't. Take another professor. He is very hard and everyone said sociology was easy and understandable and this class is very tough. Not an easy A by any means. I would not recommend him because I worked so hard and I don't know my grade yet but it doesn't reflect my effort.
I think this class is kinda hard for a 101 class. but if you study hard you can get an A . There are3 exams are a 12 pages paper. You have to study to do well on his exams and you MUST read the text book for the exams as well as the lecture notes from class. I wouldn't miss his lecture. He is willing to help you if you go to his office hours.
3 exams and one 12 page paper. You REALLY REALLY REALLY have to study the book and attend class for the notes in order to pass. Attendance is MANDATORY! Visit his office hours because that will make or break your grade!! I received and A in the course after FAILING the first exam. It's possible to do well, just be ready to put the effort in :)
He honestly is a good professor, a little strange sometimes but it makes lecture a little more interesting. He is extremely willing to help if yo visit him during his office hours. His test are not easy, but if you study your notes and the book you should do fine.
He is HARD. But I did learn a lot from his class. if you want to skate through soc 101- take someone else. Because he refuses to let you do that. He will squeeze all the effort out of you. He is extremely knowledgable about pretty much everything in life, and loves Karl Marx. Also, go to his office, its scary- but he loves it.
Hands down the best professor I've ever taken. He is HARD but this is college. Expects a lot out of you, but you learn even more. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Lecture oriented class. The tests are very difficult and there is a 12 page term paper at the end of the class, about the three long books you have to read. If you take DO NOT take at 8 am, very difficult to stay awake and pay attention!
Uncle Charlie (as he calls himself) is the BEST professor I've had here. He keeps the class interesting and entertaining with stories and anecdotes. He is difficult but you'll leave there with your eyes wide open to how the world really runs. Watch our for the the Kaboom People Dr. Cipolla!
Dr. Cipolla is one of the best professors i've had. I was not interested in sociology in the beginning of the semester but i honestly can say now its one of my favorite classes. There are only 3 tests including the final and one 12 page paper that is easy as long as you read the books. Very interesting and entertaining class. I would take him again
Dr. Cipolla is quite an interesting man. His tests are difficult, they are all recall questions, so you either know it or you don't. Depending on your course load, it will either be your hardest class or an unnecessary annoyance. He is very approachable but, be ready to read and memorize definitions and sociologist. Attendance is mandatory.
3 tests including the final; format is SA/essay 100 pts. per test. Stops grading once you get below a certain score so you can still make a comeback if you study better for next exams. Paper on two huge books w/ no grading rubric--didn't like this at all; did worse on the paper than all 3 tests which is unusual for me. Decent professor overall.
I took this course in '82 or '83 when it was called "The Sociology of Health and Illness". One day to illustrate the point that our culture determines our beliefs & behaviors he asked me what I ate for breakfast that day. My truthful answer, "Curried lentils & eggs". He took in good form with a smile. He's a very good professor.
Dr. Cipolla was AWESOME. Wish I could go back to school and take more classes with him. He made us think, respected our views, and even when we disagreed politically, he'd grade fairly if you could back up your argument. He's the best teacher I had at Salisbury.
