really straightforward, gives out candy in class. funny and a really nice guy. if you can memorize the lecture material (it's not that much) it's a guaranteed a in the class, he doesn't throw you curveballs or anything like that.

CJ was one of my favorite professors at Duke. Loves to get to know the students and is a blast to go visit out of class. One of the professors that I wish I'd maintained a relationship with. The class material is so-so, but it's worth taking it to get to experience CJ!
Anyone that can make the subject of accounting interesting has got to be an amazing professor. He gets to know all of his students and the triva/candy time at the beginning of class is always entertaining. Skender's like a human computer - he knows EVERYTHING!
Professor Skender is a great guy, but the material is tedious. If you get behind by skipping the lectures, it's a lot to catch up on.
god level prof. hillarious and fantastic.
Best Professor I have ever had. I took 5 classes with him at NCSU and loved every class.
Makes Accounting class as fun and bearable as he can. There are massive amounts of tedious material, so if you don't mind doing weekly problem sets and multiple practice tests, you can do well in this class if you study well. Not the type of class you want to wait until the last minute to catch up on--that's impossible. Average grades are B's.
CJ is amazing. His accounting class is extremely useful and he keeps it interesting. He actually makes an 8:30am class worth going to. The material is not hard at all if you just keep up. HIGHLY recommended.
The reviews are glowing, and he's a great and fun teacher. However, I'm pretty sure most of the reviews on here are from kids who do well in the class. There's a solid 1/2 of the class who doesn't fare as well too (C's, etc.). Go to class, do your work, study, and you should be fine. Be warned: it's a ton of material.
I like Skender a lot, but I hate this class. I do fine on the tests, but it's way too much material crammed into one semester (other schools split it into 2 semesters). A lot of theory, not enough practical application. Good for a general overview, but difficult to study for unless you just have a passion for it.
If you can keep up with the material and Skender's style of teaching, you'll highly enjoy his class. He makes Accounting interesting. It's challenging and a bit tricky, but Skender's goal is to help you get the best grade possible. Go to him for help if you need it. It's an incredibly difficult class if you wait until the last minute to study.
great teacher.
He does his job every day he comes in
Took CJ for two accounting classes and he made very dry material extremely entertaining. Inspired me to go on and get an advanced law degree in taxation. Would have never done that without CJ. I was his worst student ever - but I am good with that. He was funny, but frankly I was funnier. If he ever reads this, he will know who wrote it.
I had no interest in Financial Accounting but Prof Skender made this course interesting even at 8:30. His love for numbers, basketball, and pop culture is a killer combo and you'll never get bored!
great, funny professor. very entertaining especially at 8 30 in the morning. material is very dry and tedious. sometimes he goes through lectures really quickly and it's hard to pay attention especially if you hvaen't done the reading. I actually found the textbook to be really useful, although many of my classmates did not.
Great teacher! CJ makes accounting enjoyable and fun. The math is not hard, its just a matter of getting used to the terms. Very straight forward tests, some questions are the exact same as on the practice tests. Do the homework and practice tests and there is no reason you should not get an A.
This professor is awesome. Through his hilarity and idiosyncrasy he makes class interesting and entertaining. He genuinely cares about teaching and his students. If you put in minimal effort and attend most classes the material shouldn't be too difficult.
A very cool professor, but not very good at explaining stuff. Read the textbook and do the practice exams
best ever
the craziest, most hilarious, most genuine professor i have ever had in my life. he really wants you to get the best grade in the class, and actually learn finance.
The most unique professor that you can have at Duke! He is a fair grader. He makes the class fun and even when you watch the videos from the sessions, you can't help yourself laughing! The content is really clear and the questions in the final come mostly from what he exercises in the class. He also gives a rough outline for the final exam.
UNC BUSI 101 Don't take this class if you don't want to major in business. He's really nice and there to help, but the class is difficult. It's managerial and financial accounting, even though I don't think it says that in the class description.
Most incredible teacher at duke. You have to show up to class, though, and you need to make sure that you write down every word he puts on the board, take every in class practice quiz, and take lots of practice tests. That's the only way. Such an inspiring teacher who really "get's it." He knows how to make students care & find what they care about
He is a really boring professor, but he puts all of his lectures online so it is really easy to not ever attend class. The class is also not particularly difficult if you memorize how to do problems rather than actually understand them.
While he kept lectures rather engaging, he really didn't know how to explain major concepts beyond what was given in each practice problem. If you take his class, always go to class and start preparing for the final today.
8:30 am every semester with mandatory attendance. Took the class for job purposes. Definitely useful in that respect, but dull material. Cool professor though. Probably the best-dressed guy I've seen at Duke.
Ok so BUSI 101 was one of the most stressful courses I took. DO NOT take this class if you don't want to major in business. The class material is insanely boring so I can't criticize Skender for not making it super interesting. Expect 3-4 hours of your Sundays dedicated to this course. Tests are tough and TA sessions are not helpful at all.
Professor Skender is hands down the best professor I have ever had the pleasure of being taught by. He's extremely dedicated to his students and both of his classes are incredibly interesting (yes, it's accounting). He keeps the students engaged and cracks some of the best jokes I've ever heard. One of the best experiences of my academic career.
"A real gem" doesn't describe CJ enough. If every professor was CJ, the world would be a much better place. Tests can be hard if you don't put in the effort, but he genuinely wants everyone to succeed and will boost your grade just by seeing if you've made effort (gone to every class and review session, improved on exams, etc.).
The course had a small portion for class attendance, then the rest of the grade was split up in midterm and final. Not keeping up with the non-graded homework assignments will kill you. I thought the finance material was difficult and boring, but he made it as fun and interesting as possible.
BUSI 101 is a pretty tough class at UNC as it is basically two classes worth of material combined into one. CJ is a cool and nice guy, but it's just too much material for him to teach in lectures so most of the learning is done on your own (good luck with that). Tests are pretty tough.
Attending lectures is not helpful for this class. Attendance was taken sometimes. The examples he works through are not at all similar to the questions that will be on the midterm or the exam. Studying for the midterm is relatively easy; however, the final is too much information. The homework is pointless, but graded, so its just a waste of time.
Good professor who cares and wants you to do well, but is tough to understand sometimes. He talks really quickly and uses lots of abbreviations, so sit at the front. Study past tests, do some of the homework problems, and go to the review sessions for an advantage on the tests. If you don't do so well, talk with him and he'll try to help you out.
This class is sooo easy after Econ174. He helps you out with so many of the take homes and just genuinely wants you to learn. Most of the material is from 174 and the new managerial material is really easy. Plus, it's CJ--the one, the only.
He's not the best lecturer- he gets very off topic and spends a good amount of class playing music and going on anecdotal tangents, only focusing a short amount of time on the actual material. I ended up having to teach myself a lot of the material but the homework is helpful. There is only a midterm and final, but he curves the final generously.
Coolest professor I've ever had. He is very funny and I actually look forward to his class to hear his wisdom and humor. The class is not hard, it just takes a little practice to do well on the tests. There are also plenty of opportunities to practice/ask him questions. Very interesting guy, I admire him a lot.
CJ knows his stuff and is incredibly kind and accessible. The course is unfortunately textbook heavy. Instead of supplanting difficult chapters with educational lectures, CJ resorts only to completing examples in class. Examples are helpful, but it's difficult to manage accounting concepts solo. Tests can be managed with lots of practice.
**UNC**** CJ is one of my favorite professors that I have had. He really made class fun. The material was very tough, but you just have to put in the time to practice. Rarely took attendance, responded to emails promptly, graded fairly. The midterm and final were difficult but not impossible.
Great professor. Tests are tough and it's really up to you to stay on top of it, but if you make the effort and come to class, you'll be fine. The other day, I emailed him to say I was having some trouble with the material and he spent an hour with me individually going over the problems. Can't say the last time I had a professor do that for me.
The grade is almost entirely dependent on the tests, which you can easily prepare for by taking all of the practice tests he provides, as all of the test questions will be reused. Attending lectures is an easy way to learn the material on the tests, but since it's an 8:30 class, you can still do well in the class by only reading the online textbook
Like everyone else has said, CJ is a great guy, if not the best teacher. Go to recitation and do the homework and you should be fine with the concepts.
CJ is very funny. He makes jokes all the time & tries his best to make an 8:30 AM class entertaining. However, I didn't really find the textbook useful, & CJ moves way too fast in class to grasp concepts. Studying old exams is very helpful b/c our tests are exactly like the old tests, but, in general, accounting principles are difficult to get.
CJ is awesome! He's such a funny and charismatic person, especially for 8:30 AM. He's full of wisdom and tries to make a very dry topic entertaining. As long as you pay attention in class, it's an easy A. He goes over everything you need to know in class for the tests but you need to pay attention
In general, he is a nice funny guy, but he can say some pretty sexist stuff. Lecture is important (trust me I didn't go because it's at 8 am and I paid for it). Grade is mostly based on the tests, and the concepts can be very difficult. Stay on top of your work because once you get behind, it is really hard to catch up.
Great professor, a real legend. Grade based on attendance, two mid-terms, and a final. Course material and exams become more difficult as the semester progresses.
He is hilarious and knows how to keep students entertained in a boring business class. He is a great man and he tries to help his students out a lot, even though he has 800 of them. But, the exams come straight from the coursepack!!! You do not need to go to class or pay attention to do good in this class; honestly his lectures just confused me.
TAKE THIS CLASS PASS/FAIL, it doesn't fulfill requirements anyways. This way, u can learn accounting without the stress. I found his lectures too fast to learn from. I taught myself by doing his practice questions. He takes attendance, but get old notes from someone and u don't have to pay attention in lecture. I repeat, NOTES ARE IMPORTANT.
The nicest professor you'll meet at Duke. The 8:30 lectures are worth waking up for. I barely opened the textbook and still passed just from his lectures. I definitely suggest FLUNCHing him as well. 10/10 professor.
CJ is the best professor I have ever had. Although the lectures are at 8:30am, he manages to keep everyone engaged through his vivid sense of humor and amazing teaching style.
CJ is fun, humorous and acts as an "uncommon" professor in my view. His teaching style is funny. He loves to introduce different songs and movies for us in class and share his stories with us. His records his lecture every time, and his midterm and final are the same as the past ones, which makes it much easier for us to prepare for.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Great lectures infused with interesting stories about his experiences. Completely made me forget it was an 8:30. The homework is optional. The tests are easy he makes sure you know exactly what will be on the test and how to do it. I also took 274 with him, which was just as fun and manageable.
Has a great heart and can be funny, but I really dislike how off-topic he gets during class. Very distracting. Runs through class material too quickly so you will focus on note-taking instead of learning. Better to watch lecture videos than attend class.
C.J. is an amazing professor. Very down to Earth, and serves as a father figure to everyone and anyone who comes to him. Works hard to prepare you for the tests, giving you the exact style questions that will be on them. You won't find a more caring, inspiring professor.
Very difficult material. Do not take without extensive Econ/accounting background. Extensive work expected outside of class. Attendance taken as small part of grade. Very kind man. Will help in any way possible. Incredible person.
cj is the man. u def need to go to class bc he does all boardwork (doesn't post recording/slides) and is essentially what's on exams. times the lectures perfectly - wants to make make the class worth it. exams are just memorize plug and chug. only reason not a 5.0 is he would get off topic often which is frustrating for someone who woke up for 8:30
A very manageable class. CJ never checks HW and prepares you well for exams, since the questions are exactly like those on past exams and practice quizzes. CJ is a great person and more than willing to help, yet his lectures are unclear and often off-topic, so I have to self-learn all contents by reading the textbook, but the material is not hard.
USE THE PAST PAPERS! The test questions are very similar throughout and careful revision of previous work can help you excel. Regardless, Skender is a good professor who really cares for his students. He wants what is best out of each student, in turn meaning he was very understanding of the conditions some students were placed in bc of COVID.
Useful and necessary class to take. Prepares you well for banking. You'll need to work for the A.
Professor Skender is a sweet and caring man whose compassion shows both in and outside the classroom. He regularly stays after class to help students with questions and hosts helpful review sessions prior to each exam. As long as you complete the practice problems and pay attention during lectures, the class should be fairly straightforward.
CJ is a great professor. He wants to make sure everyone can succeed but he still makes you work for the A. Sometimes he goes through content a little fast but all the lectures are recorded to watch them over, take notes, review past exams, and you'll do well. Would definitely take this class again!
Professor Skender was a really engaging and inspirational professor, and his energy and interest in accounting made his students enthusiastic about the material as well. He was accessible outside class with many office hours, and he really cared about his students' understanding of the material. Go to class, do past tests, and you will do well!
CJ is so sweet. He is a born teacher and the way he adapted what used to be a huge lecture to the COVID remote learning world was admirable. He wants you to succeed. Content-wise, I wouldn't take this class again because I despise maths and economics and I wouldn't recommend it for people (like me) looking for an easy QS.
CJ is great! His class is relatively easy, but your entire grade comes from just 3 exams. As long as you take thorough notes every class and study the released exams, you'll get a good grade. He's also super understanding and happy to help his students with anything!
I loved this professor. One of the best I've ever had at Duke. He is sooo inspirational, his lectures are great (but heavy). I advise you to go over the chapters before class, so you can better understand in class. For the exams, just make sure you understand the older tests and you'll be fine.
Over Zoom made things more boring than normal, but CJ was great and did all he could to keep the class entertaining. He truly cares about his students. Definitely get to know him outside of class. If you do the practice tests, you will get a good grade.
Really passionate teacher who has a lot of experience within the field. As long as you attend the lectures and do all the homework this class is very manageable. His exam reviews are really helpful for preparing for the exams and are in a really similar manner. It's not super fascinating material but valuable nonetheless.
I took both econ174 and econ274 with CJ. He is probably my favorite professor at Duke. He is nice & really cares about his students. He wants everyone in his class to do well. Both classes are graded heavily on 3 exams. When I took the class they were all take home exams or open notes. The problems on the tests are exactly what you do in class!
Easiest class taken. Exams are open-book and the questions are almost identical to past exams. There is an official textbook but no need to purchase it.
Really great professor. Goes over everything in great detail and makes things simple!
He's such a great guy - get to know him if you can! Wouldn't recommend for investment banking recruitment at all though - to all the fresh/sophs like myself who thought I would be killer at interviews after this class. This class is too much in depth/ kinda tangential to interview questions.
Graded on three take home, open note exams and attendance. The class itself was super engaging and he's an awesome guy. Really excellent lecturer and wants everyone to succeed in his class. Less focused on grading and just wants to teach you something.
Great professor. He's just such a genuinely nice guy and it's hard not to like him. Lectures are pretty heavy so attendance is really important but worth it.
CJ is the goat. He is the nicest guy and makes class fun with movies and songs of the day. It is sometimes hard to keep up with his fast paced problem solving, so reviewing a little outside class would help. Tests are take home and he gives big time slots. Awesome teacher, great class.
Great class with the GOAT!
CJ is really nice, but his teaching style didn't work for me. Lectures were too in-depth and not explanatory enough to help with the exams. He doesn't explain why he does the steps. Thankfully, the exams are take-home, but it took a lot of self-teaching and office hours just to pass. I wouldn't recommend the class if you're looking for an easy QS.
Finance in the MEM program with CJ was a great experience. Very engaging lectures with clear examples, clear expectations, and plenty of funny little quips and amusing anecdotes. Weekly lecture content was easy to digest and easy to access in Sakai. Highly recommend attending the live session each week if possible.
Very genuine person and willing to help students where they needed it.
He is very flexible and actually wants you to learn. If you need help then he will help you out and is willing to push you towards a grade that you need by your want to learn.
Very kind and wants us to be engaged. The material was a bit dense for into to accounting but tests were all take home.
Don't take it. Tests are easy, but not a single day of the semester will be enjoyable because simply the thought of having to eventually deal with the material saps away energy. The only reasons to go to lecture are that a) he writes out answers to some questions and b) he takes attendance. Don't buy the textbook.
You'll forever remember CJ. He is one of a kind. If we could replicate his style of teaching....all classes would be fun and effective.
Go to class! CJ is one of the funniest professors at Duke but you have to be there for it! The course is challenging and there's not much incentive to keep up with reading/homework BUT you have to force yourself to do it or else you'll be scrambling for the exams (which make up 90% of your grade). Lean heavily on the recorded exam review sessions.
Goes through lectures and class problems extremely fast. Super nice and funny guy. Have to do lot of reading on your own if you really want to understand the material.
C.J. Skender is GOAT.
CJ is awesome. He is probably one of the funniest and strange (in a good way) professors I've had at Duke. While I will the material is challenging for an intro to accounting class, and often overwhelming, it's a fun class to take cause of the take home midterms and finals. Not an ”easy A” but would take CJ again.
Graded by very few things and easy to fall off track if you're not doing the work outside of class. CJ is an amazing professor who cares so much about his students.
Professor Skender is super funny and overall just an amazing guy! Intro to Financial Accounting is graded on two exams only, and for anyone without a background or general accounting sense, these exams can feel very dense and difficult. They're take-home, which makes things easier though!
Absolutely hilarious, love him
CJ was definitely the highlight of the course. He is super fun, possibly one of the most entertaining you could find at Duke! I would say the material is rather heavy and three exams make up most of the grade. The review videos before each exam are a must-watch. Also, this is an 8:30 class, so be prepared! But overall, great class.
