This guy's great. I had him for Western Civilization 2. His tests are very fair. He won't test you on anything that he does not discuss in class. That being said, he tests from his lecture, not the book, so while attendence is not necessary to pass, you do have to attend to get his notes. Great guy with a good sense of humor. Strongly recommend.
I had Clark for a summer class- he was a great professor! If I had to take class in the summer, glad I was in his lecture. I actually enjoyed it- good sense of humor, tells funny history stories, and the tests are easy. If you pay attention you'll do fine. Recommend!
His tests are very, very hard. I've ALWAYS received and A in history. I attended class 98% of the time and he's difficult to follow. He likes to pace the floor and jump from one subject to another. He's a good guy, but very, very difficult.
This is the hardest class i've ever taken. Prof Clark seems to be more interested in telling stories that he thinks are funny than getting the point across about what we are supposed to be learning. His tests are impossible to get A's on. I strongly discourage anyone from taking anything he teaches... unless you already know everything about histor
Prof. Clark's class is very easy. He tells you exactly what the essay questions will be and the whole rest of the test is just vocabulary. I made A's on every single thing we did in that class and I never studied for anything until the day of. I would recommend this class if you're just taking History because you're required to.
THIS CLASS = DEATH
Do no take this class. Far too difficult.
Really knows his material, if you come to class and take notes you will do fine on the test because he always gives you some funny answers to rule out early
easy class if you study. he is kind of hard to keep up with but if you just write down the stuff he repeats youll do fine. Class attendance is not mandatory but it is if you plan on passing. gives you test essay questions early to prepare for, the rest of the test is EXTREMELY EASY multiple choice.
Not a bad class. Nice guy. Multiple choice is based off vocab that he gives you with an outline. Essays are given ahead of time (so don't be lazy and make outlines). Just listen and write down everything. Attendance is not mandatory but if you plan on passing then you have to go. Do these things and the class is easy.
he is absolutely hilarious. best teacher i have had at in three years at alabama. knows the material very well, and will work with you for a very long time to help you understand it. he loves to teach it.
This Class is extremely hard. when he lectures he goes on tangents the whole time! he does not stay on topic at all! please for the love of god do not take him!! he is terrible. and his TA's SUCK!!
Clark is awesome! He keeps the lectures interesting even though they are long. It requires a lot of work to make an A but it is possible! If you take good notes, actively participate in discussion class, study your vocabulary and prepare for the essays you will do just fine! He always has his office open to students who need extra help and is great
Let me preface this comment by saying that I am a History major. That being said, I've taken a lot of teachers who simply present the information chronologically and reinforce the boring element of history. However, Clark provides relevant and interesting stories that give background to the subject and help to keep his class's attention. Good class
great teacher. really knows his material. not a guaranteed "a", but if you go to lecture and participate in discussion sections, you'll do fine. has a great sense of humor and plays classic rock over speaker system before class
Great prof...tends to ramble a bit or jump ahead then come back. Leave some empty space in your notes if you think he might have just jumped ahead.
He is an awesome teacher who loves what he teaches. He gives terms to help you study for the multiple choice, and then he gives you 4 possible essays that would be on the exam. I would take this course over again in a heartbeat.
Probably the best professor I've had at Alabama so far. Is absolutely passionate about the subject, teaches you everything you need to know and makes it memorable with great anecdotes that really appealed to a trivia buff like me. If you ask him a question he doesn't know the answer to, he will go out of his way to research and explain it.
great.... kinda starting to have a crush on him!! haha, what a nerd i am. but he really is funny!
He's a great instructor. He makes everything easy to undertand, the tests are ridiculously easy, plus he plays random msic before class. Definitely the best history professor I've had here.
great professor! Really knows what he is talking about. He does tend to ramble when he really gets into his lectures but very interesting. Be sure to take notes and study terms for his tests. His tests are nothing to complain about.
He is a really great Professor. He was really helpful when I was experiencing issues with one of his TA's. That being said, he needs to be more strict with his TA's, we don't do anything in the discussion! But I think he is absolutely hilarious and I plan on taking as many of his classes as I can ;) .
This professor is a flaming liberal, and I love it. He's passionate about what he teaches and keeps his opinions pretty transparent. This class is what has kept me going this semester. I actually love coming to this class. Superb teacher, but don't buy the book.
I am NOT a history person. I never have been. If I were, I might have enjoyed his class. He loves what he teaches, and he's certainly not a bad teacher, but if you don't like history DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. He tends to go on tangents, and sometimes I didn't know what all to write down. It will frustrate and confuse you, unless you're into history.
This guy is hilarious. Before every class, he picks out some of the wierdest music, but he almost always has funny stories behind it. His papers are tough, but reasonable. His testa are mult. choice and essay. If you pay attention in class and write down a few things, you'll do fine. Don't mess around with the essays though. They count the most.
Good teacher, I just had no interest in the class. Attendence is not mandatory so alot of people dont go. Reading the book is somewhat helpful but alot of stuff comes straight from his lectures. Test Essays are very important so study the example essays before the tests.
I took him for 102 and 204 and loved both classes! He tries to keep you intersted in lectures making current ties to the history as well as trying to make you laugh. If you study for the tests and the essay questions he gives for the test its easy to do well. Attendance isn't mandatory but definately recommended to stay on point
If you do not like history and aren't interested in hy, DO NOT TAKE HIM! He knows his stuff but teaches at such a high level. Tests are hard!
This professor's lectures are really hard to follow and unless you are a great note taker and can pay attention the entire class dont take him. He's very unorganized and I could not follow his lectures. I had to learn all the material by myself before every test because I didnt learn anything in lecture. Dont take him.
Class is interesting. The tests are hard but fair. Get to class early so you can hear his strange musical selection of the day. Dr. Clark's personality makes the class fun. He's also kind of cute in a geeky sort of way.
Prof. Clark is a great teacher. He knows the material, but gets easily distracted during his lectures. Attendance is not mandatory, but you should go because he only uses information that is found in his lectures. Very interesting to listen to. Take him if possible if you are interested in history.
Dr. Clark is an awesome professor, but be prepared to work (it's a writing course, so you have to expect that). There were 3 papers, 6-8 pages each, 2 quizzes, a midterm and final. Lectures are interesting, class atmosphere is laid-back. I learned a lot about WWII, but I had to earn it. He's a good choice, especially if you need a writing credit.
Professor Clark is a very interesting teacher. He knows so much about WW2 that he often ends up getting sidetracked and falls behind schedule. However, he is very fair in every aspect of grading and welcomes questions/discussions.
Clark is a very interesting teacher. His lectures are entertaining, informative, and easy to follow. He'll have a lot of bad ratings because it's an entry level freshman course and he isn't a push over. But if you're not retarded and hungover every day you'll make a B or A and actually learn somthin
Although he has the frustrating habit of getting way off topic, all together his class is interesting and easy. I suggest not buying the book, but attending all his classes. (Attendance isn't necessary) Take diligent notes and study terms for the test. Outline essays in advance and you'll get an A. Flexible and helpful, I recommend him.
Very funny person! He is very helpful, but he doesn't really answer his email all that often unless you pester him about it. He is an amazing person because he teaches in an engaging way which keeps me paying attention! I am so happy I took his class. You do have to work to get a good grade.
Just finished my second class with Dr. Clark. He's one of my fav professors. Lectures are really interesting, but I recommend getting a laptop to take notes so you don't miss anything. Tests are almost entirely based on lecture. Somewhat heavy workload, but you'll learn a lot and improve as a writer. I'm taking his FDR class next semester.
Fantastic Professor! Highly recommended. Maybe the only class, I was not constantly checking the time, waiting to leave!
Great professor!! Extremely knowledgeable and makes the class very interesting. His background knowledge is fascinating. Very laid back and quite funny. Grades fairly and is willing to discuss grades if you have an issue. One of my favorite professors!!
There's work involved, but if you pay attention and study, tests are actually pretty easy. Dr Clark isn't going to hand you an A, but if you try, you'll get one. Plus, he's very knowledgeable and super funny, knows tons of random facts. He goes off on random tangents all of the time (which you don't have to know for the tests). He's very fair also.
This man is a wealth of knowledge and a really excellent professor. He knows more about WWII than I thought one could and he does a great job of keeping lectures interesting and full of information. Tests do require pretty intensive studying, but if you're interested in really learning about this chunk of history, it will be well worth your effort.
Charles is a very nice teacher and loves what he does. The problem is, he has too much knowledge of his field and when giving notes will go off of a random story about something irrelevant to the subject. I can't fault him for loving his profession but he can be very confusing and his tests are very difficult.
Clark is a great teacher, however grading is rather hard. I love history and know most of the WWI stuff already but struggle because he has more of a social equation about everything. Very nice teacher but be sure that you're ready to do a lot of work.
EXTREMELY knowledgeable. He is very nice and pretty laid-back. His class is almost exclusively tests and essays so your final grade will be a result of how well you do on the tests and essays. If you take time to study and read some you can do good in this class. Not an easy A but one that is well-earned.
Clark literally knows everything about everything. He plays weird, off the wall music before class which is sometimes neat. Great teacher, but expects you to remember basically everything he says. His stories aren't on the test, but be sure to study for all tests and essays. It took him over a month to grade several tests/essays...
He keeps things interesting in class. Very easy going and easy to work with. He's very passionate about history. Gives book essays, but if you read the book and come to class before the essay, he basically gives you the answer. Tests are difficult, but still a fun class. Great teacher, take him!
Very knowledgeable. Tests are a joke but he grades essays very hard. You have to write down everythingggg he says bc some of his test questions are very specific and can't be found in the book. Do not buy the book I never ever opened it and go to class even though its not required!
This is the hardest class I've ever taken in my life. You can tell the Professor Clark is very passionate about history, but this often leads him to get off on tangents that are completely irrelevant to the topic at hand, and leave me so confused that I don't even know what we were supposed to be talking about in the first place. If you've got a solid history background you could do well, but if you're just taking it to get a HY credit out of the way, like me, you might struggle.
Mr. Clark is a nice instructor but his test aren't easy. You have to really study and know the material. He's willing to answer any questions you ask though. He runs through the material pretty fast, so you have to listen and take notes quickly. He's not the worse HY instructor but if you can take another instructor I recommend taking someone else.
Awesome teacher! one of the best in the history department for sure. Test are hard but if you work for it you can make an A. Everything comes from lecture. Get the books but not the text book.
dont take him. he is awful
First, the tests are impossible. Second, the guy knows his history..He likes to go off on random stories so he's impossible to follow in class. Taking notes? Impossible. The guy posts an outline but goes so far off topic you just sit there and cry to yourself because you have no idea what is going on. Just....don't take this class.
I have taken 5 classes with him. He is one of the best I have ever had. HE LITERALLY GIVES YOU THE TEST BEFOREHAND ON THE STUDY GUIDE. Studying for the tests takes no more than 4 hours if you even the slightest clue about history. He prefers argumentation in papers over facts. Make a point, back it up, and you make an easy A
Do not take him. His tests are impossible and hard. He knows his history very well and rambles on about random stuff in class. Take someone else!!
Love him! The class is not easy and requires lots of work but it's worth it. The lectures are interesting for the most part and he's a really cool dude. The tests are not difficult if you study!
Tests are impossibly hard and he doesn't put the notes online. No powerpoints, DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER HE IS IMPOSSIBLE
One of the best professors I've ever had. Incredible interesting and knowledgeable, he obviously loves his subject and knows pretty much everything about it too. He plays weird music before every class, which is always fun. His tests are hard if you don't prepare, but if you do, you'll be fine. He's also incredibly understanding and helpful.
Do not take this professor if you want a A . The test are difficult. Attendance to you small group lectures are mandatory (10% of your grade) where you write three essays (you read three books) total 30% of your grade. (I never read a single book and got A on all three essays) Then you have three test 60% of your grade.
The expectations for his class are insane. I took it in a summer course, only 4 weeks, and he was expected two 6-8 page papers + exams, for a mere 300 level course in 4 weeks. The scale doesn't match with the time frame at all. Do yourself a favor there's usually more 300 level HY courses available take those.
I took a class with Professor Clark 2 years ago and it is still by far my favorite class that I have taken. Attending wasn't mandatory but it was necessary his test come straight from his lectures and if you can drop some of the more out there details on the test, mainly multiple choice with a few essays at the end, you will be able to do well.
Went to every class, his tests come straight from his lectures. Nice guy, will help if needed. Likes to make jokes. If you study his key terms, and study the optional essay questions you'll make an A.
This dude knows his stuff. He clearly has fun giving his lectures and has a really dry sense of humor that he applies to them. He's really clear in his lectures, but his outlines kind of suck due to the lack of info actually on them. Be prepared to write the details down. Tests weren't bad if you didn't have your head up your but the entire time.
I found it very hard to pay attention because he is mono-toned. He also has a dry sense of humor but isn't really funny. Clark is a self-proclaimed Marxist. He'll drop obvious hints of socialism in his lectures and will tell the class straight up. His test are multiple choice and an in class essay which can be a good or bad thing.
He's really knowledgable in his field, but also will go off on random tangents sometimes. He also has a dry sense of humor and plays random music before class. If you skip class, it is harder to pass his class. As long as you know the key terms and pay attention to the small stuff, his tests aren't too bad.
Dr. Clark is an amazing professor. Lectures are always interesting, and he adds amusing anecdotes from time to time to help break up the sometimes monotonous historical facts. I looked forward to this class each week. RECORD HIM so that you can go back and re-listen to lectures, as he can move quite fast. Also, don't miss class.
Dr. Clark is a rare breed of professor who can inspire interest in the subject no matter what your prior interest level is. He is obviously excited to be teaching what he teaches, and it's infectious. His intelligence is absolutely staggering, and he has a sense of humor to go with it. He covers a lot of material very quickly, so take notes.
Dr. Clark's lecture style can be confusing, but that's only because he literally cannot contain himself from sharing funny historical tidbits or really important stories with you! His love for history is so clear, even if my notes weren't. I'd definitely recommend taking him if you want to keep your survey classes a bit more interesting.
I felt that his lectures were too fast to properly take the right notes. For each test, you'll have a multiple-choice section and an essay section, where you have to write a 5 paragraph essay. And you'll also have to read several books and write essays on them in your TA section. This class is a lot of work but it's not the worst I guess.
Overall exceptional Professor and Person. No cake walk, if you work hard enough you will succeed.
Must attend class and pay close attention to lectures for the test. There was only six grades for the entire course, so better make them count! Didn't really do much of the reading, and I made it along just fine. His tests were only 25 questions to cover like 15 outlines..a lot to study and too few questions. Miss just a couple and it really hurts!
He is definitely a tough teacher, and the lectures can be long and tedious, but the he makes the class interesting. The expectations are high but I loved the class and would definitely take him again. He's very helpful and understanding, and a pretty easy grader too!
Lectures are really interesting! There were two papers. It was challenging, but fun.
HY 108 was really fun, Mr. Clark is an incredible guy and you can tell that he truly loves what he's doing, history is more than a job. if you go to class and take notes, the class should not be hard, but won't be easy, it is an honors course after all, however he is an easy grader and if you study and go to class its a guaranteed A.
This man makes me want to switch majors to History.
Clark made me want to switch majors. He was interesting, involved, and extremely charismatic. He made the subject entertaining and did not expect too much from students. I feel like I truly learned a lot taking this class.
He is one of the most incredible teachers in the history department and university. I specifically chose my next history class because he was the teacher. His class is all lecture and sometimes discussion for reading material every few week. Tests are straight forward IDs and essays taken straight from lecture. He is a walking history documentary.
One of the absolute best professors and classes I've ever taken. I cannot recommend him enough. His class was challenging, but not nearly difficult enough to hinder me from enjoying it. His passion and humor help the lecture, and if you can take adequate notes you will be fine. Made me consider changing my major to history.
The class itself isn't the easiest but he's a great lecturer. You can tell he is passionate about what he does and makes learning it fun. He talks super fast though so either record his lectures or use a laptop. I tried handwriting for the first few weeks and it did not go well. The TAs are also fabulous. They really care about helping your grade.
great teacher! probably my favorite history teacher. he is a great lecturer, and always keeps it interesting. if you come to class and discussion section, you will be prepared for the essays and the tests. you do have to put in work though. Would definitely recommend!
I feel so fortunate Dr. Clark happened to be teaching this course the semester I took it. He's wonderful. The way he lectures feels very conversational, and he teaches history the way it should be taught: as a narrative, not a dull list of people, places and dates. If you have the opportunity to take one of his classes, DO IT. You won't regret it.
Mr. Clark is very kind and obviously brilliant, he just does not know how to teach you what he already knows. He speaks too quickly for you to easily follow him, so notes are worthless since it's only broken sentences and chicken scratch. He also assigned the wrong textbook, so that was helpless. Overall, not worth the stress.
Dr. Clark is pretty relaxed compared to the vibe you may get at first. He's very nice and helpful, but assigns a ton of reading, although not all of it is necessary. However, both of the essays are based off of the books he assigns, so reading those is crucial for doing well on the papers. The class is difficult at times, but it's fascinating.
Dr. Clark is a fantastic lecturer and very knowledgeable on the subject. Although not required to attend, missing more than 3 classes will probably result in a poor grade. Be prepared to read 3 books and write papers on them. Can be difficult, but definitely worth it.
Dr Clark is a great professor. He's very laid back and approachable, and VERY knowledgeable. He definitely makes you work to earn a good grade, but he's not out to ruin your GPA either. He tells you exactly what will be on the exams, so if you go to class and put in the time to study, you can expect to do very well.
Absolutely loves what he does. Listen to lectures and write good notes and thats your test, he gives the exact multiple choice possibilities and potential essays. 2 essays outside of class.
Everything is based off of the lectures which are very intriguing. You will most likely be writing nonstop the whole time but it's important to write down as much as you can to study. He puts the outline of his lecture on Blackboard with the key terms he wants you to know which are good to study for tests. Only 2 papers.
Im not a history major but Prof clark has made me consider changing majors. Best lecturer I have ever had at Alabama by far, and it made me actually look forward to attending class. That being said you have to pay attention and take notes in lecture because the tests are based totally on his lecture. 2 papers, 2 tests, and a final.
He is one of those professors that believes in alternate facts and goes against clearly supported historical facts. If you believe the Treaty of Versailles was a leading cause for WWII then he will tell you that you and about 99% of historians are wrong just because Germany was still a country under the Weimar.
Dr. Clark is by far the most interesting professor I have had at UA. I have taken 2 of his classes and they have both been awesome! I would definitely recommend him to anyone. It also helps to have a sense of humor to understand him properly. He's not a really tough grader, and is understanding in many cases.
Clark is a gifted teacher and a wonderful storyteller, both requirements for a quality history professor. His assignments are graded thoroughly, and the class isn't easy, but I wouldn't give up the experience of the class for anything. He is an astonishingly good professor, thoroughly knowledgeable and immensely intelligent.
Dr. Clark does a good job of making the lectures funny and interesting. However, he constantly goes off on strange tangents and talks way too fast to take useful notes. The TA was ridiculously nitpicky on the papers. The entire class was unhappy with the paper grades. I had never gotten lower than a B+ on a paper, I got Cs on both his papers.
Dr. Clark is one of my favorite professors. He is so knowledgable and passionate about history - made listening to lectures very easy. He does lecture for the entire class, with no notes (just a brief outline). Write down pretty much everything he says and you'll be good. You have to read 3 books for the discussion session but they are not too bad.
Lectures are really interesting and engaging which is good to keep your interest. You have to write down everything he says to have the notes for tests but he sometimes goes off on tangents for things that you don't need to know. On the essays it is important to answer all parts of the question and give your opinion if it is needed. Great overall!
His lectures are always funny and informative and he's super nice. We had 3 in-class essays on assigned books so there is some reading required but it's not too much to handle. Attendance isn't mandatory but you definitely need to show up if you expect to make a good grade. A great class! Show up and you'll be fine.
Professor Clark is one of the best lecturers at UA. He goes off on tangents sometimes, but honestly they help me remember certain occurrences. There's two tests, two papers, and a final. The papers are a little difficult to grasp but tests are easy and he gives you all of the terms you need to know and the essay questions ahead of time.
Great professor, probably my favorite at the university. Gives a list of terms that will be used for multiple choice on tests. In class essays from a book (i.e. communist manifesto) are easy and not a tough grader. Really passionate so lectures aren't boring. In the syllabus he gives reading assignments (not mandatory) and I wish I did them. Love!
His lectures were interesting until he would go off on tangents about a certain thing and it got very confusing. I tried to take good notes but this made it difficult. Also, he would give a lot of his own opinions as fact. Other than confusing lectures, he gave 2 essays and 3 tests (with MC and essays).
Really good lecturer, but you really need to attend class in order to do well. There are papers you have to write (honors class) based off of books that you read. Overall, though, a great professor. Love all of his different tangents about what the people ate during whenever we're talking about.
Dr. Clark is a PHENOMENAL lecturer, he makes even sort of dry topics engaging and talks like he's telling a story. The best lecturer I've ever had as a student. More importantly, he's very compassionate. I had a personal problem midway through the semester and he was very understanding and accommodating. Can't say enough good things about him
Awesome professor. Clark is super entertaining in lecture and makes it interesting, but you need to go to lecture to learn. He does not post slides and will post a simple outline of each week with just bullets before every test. Awesome teacher if you pay attention and show up.
Prof Clark is a great lecturer, but went off on so many tangents it was hard to know what would be tested on. He took a ridiculous amount of time to grade exams and papers (like a month and a half for a class of 30ish), constantly canceled class without much warning, and didn't post grades online. He made a lot of excuses for not doing his job.
The feedback I received was very sparse and not helpful. A nice man but not my favorite professor
Grades are due in 4 hours from when I am writing this. This man really has not even graded the midterm. He is a great lecturer and I learned a lot. However, he continuously promised grades back and never delivered. I could be getting an A or a C. Who knows.
He takes forrreeevvveerrrrr to grade anything! I didn't know 3/5 of my biggest grades (test, paper, final) until TODAY and grades were due TODAY. It sucks having no idea what your grade is His lectures were interesting, but he would go on tangents. He doesn't take attendance but it's needed to do well in the class. He takes participation seriously.
His lectures are so hard to follow, he throws in random stories which can make it funny sometimes, but I personally found them hard to follow, and couldn't take good notes. His essay grades were completely random and his tests were incredibly hard to prepare for. Don't expect him to post any grades in a timely manner or really any grades at all.
Great class. Clark is funny and understanding. While the class is challenging, if you put in the work, it's doable and worth taking. Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want a good grade, go to class. Loved the WWI class, signed up for WWII with him next semester. I expect to have an A- in the class (a lot of these ratings are pretty dramatic)
Dr. Clark is amazingly passionate and knowledgable about what he teaches. His lectures, however, can be a bit scattered and hard to follow. He tends to go off on tangents and it's unclear what you should write down. The tests are pretty straightforward but the multiple choice questions can be difficult. The textbook quizzes are also challenging.
Very knowledgeable professor, lectures were difficult to take notes on. Test are hard because unlike most history professors, he doesn't give you potential prompts that will be on exams, and instead just gives general themes to study. Two 1500+ essays based off of assigned readings, and two tests (Midterm and Final) make up most of your grade.
It's pretty clear Clark loves history and is extremely knowledgeable about it, but he does a pretty poor job of giving the information in a way that's helpful to the students. He just stands at the front of the room and lectures with no script or outline, just telling stories and leaving the student with no idea what to write down for notes.
This class is incredibly difficult because the professor lectures with no outline or structure. This is a 'teach-yourself' type of class. It is impossible to follow and even harder to take him seriously. He is so confident in himself and his knowledge that he assumes all of the students can keep up with him. I would never recommend this professor.
If you want to learn random mundane things like colonists fighting bears in their spare time, take this class! If you want to actually learn history and have a fun time, do not take this class.
Professor Clark is very passionate with history, but the con of this is that he will go on random rants, totally losing any note taker. The class overall is not hard, but can be annoying sometimes with incomplete notes and writing 3 outlines for a test, memorizing the outlines, then writing only one (very useless). Also, book papers are not fun.
Dr. Clark's lectures are captivating and it is clear that he's both knowledgable and passionate about history! He does a great job of preparing students for tests, but waiting on grades can take weeks. He gives very little feedback on essays, but really focuses on the importance of strong thesis statements. I loved coming to this class!
He's a good guy, but his lectures are boring, he rambles, and tends to be -congested- and it's pretty gross listening to him sometimes, especially if you go back and listen to lecture recordings (a positive, he does record his lectures). His MC questions are incredibly specific and he is a harsh essay grader, plus doesn't give good feedback on them
History had never been hard for me until this class with this professor. His lectures are incredibly boring and he often goes on random tangents that have nothing to do with the course material. I never even knew what I was supposed to be studying when it came to test time because of how out of order my notes were due to his rambling.
To start, Clark is very passionate about history. He will go on random rants, throwing any note taker off track. This professor lacked communication greatly, to students and his own TAs. Papers seemed to get grade that directly relates to mood of TA too. For exams, you have to write multiple essay outlines and memorize them. Not an effective class.
With two weeks left in class we only had two grades back for the whole semester. Don't expect to know what grade you have until the end. Interesting lectures but hard to listen to with with phlegmy throat clearing. He does post the lectures online after class. Exams have confusing and extremely specific questions and he is a tough grader on exams
Professor Clark made this class VERY hard. Don't recommend if you aren't a history major
Did not enjoy this class and did not learn very much. Grading varied significantly by TA. Lectures were 55 minute voice overs of the same two slides and were not helpful. Tests are ridiculous- 500 word essay and 5 150-300 word identification sections. Thankfully he provided the prompt prior to the test. Would not take this class again.
Lectures are 50 min of dry rambling. Essay criteria is vague, and feedback is useless and takes weeks to arrive. Exams are free response, and you'll have to prewrite prompts to finish in time. You won't know your grades til the end, and you'll spend alot of extra money on books. He and his TAs seem to take pleasure in student stress and frustration
Clark seems like a nice guy but he is a HORRIBLE professor. He is extremely vague when it comes to the syllabus and essay/exam requirements. The questions that he assigns for exams are all super specific, and he barely goes over the answers in his extremely boring lectures. This class is way too much of a time investment considering its 100 level.
I had professor Clark for History 103. It was online due to the pandemic. His lectures are interesting if you like history (I do, even though it isn't my major.) But I will say this class is ridiculously difficult. By far the hardest class of my first semester. If you're looking for an easy A, or don't like history very much, Clark isn't for you.
Great lectures, great course, great man. Class is difficult but it is very possible to get an A and maybe even a A+.
If you do badly on the exams you're stupid and you don't pay attention. exams are 30 multiple choice from the vocab that he talks about in class.
Dr. Clark is great, he listens to his students and gives interesting lectures (can be overwhelming at times but not all information is tested so learn how to take notes for his lecture style). Our TA graded everything so your experience might be different, but I loved this class even though military history isn't my thing. Lots of work but worth it
I really enjoyed this class. I also enjoyed the paper topics.
Professor Clark is far and away the best professor I have had at UA. Don't take his class if you arent going to listen to his lectures and actively study for the exams. But if you can do those two things this class will be much more manageable. His passion for the subject is infectious and makes learning much more fun.
Amazing professor. I thought since his WWI class would be boring and stuffy, but he makes his lectures lively and even funny at times. He has two big take-home essays and books that you have plenty of time to read and write. His reading quizzes aren't hard if you read that week's textbook reading. Added bonus, he understands our generation's humor.
Chuck is super knowledgeable and clearly loves history, but this class is challenging. Your entire grade is basically 3 papers and 4-5 exams. I felt like I was constantly writing a paper or studying for an exam the entire semester. The papers were pretty hard if you do not read the material. Overall, would recommend & Chuck is so caring and funny.
Professor Clark is engaging and knowledgeable, but the class is challenging. Attend lectures, read the text, and use study aids like Unstuck ai to manage the heavy workload of papers and exams. Rewarding if you commit to the course.
This is my second time taking Dr. Clark and I think he's a fantastic professor. He is passionate about what he teaches making lectures engaging and enjoyable. If you're good at memorization, this course is a breeze and it's easy to get an A. Just use Quizlet to study key terms and memorize your essay outlines and you'll do well on your exams.
