Cox is cool and very funny. But he expects you to work and rarely gives above a B.
grading formula is horrible. encourages discussion but his grading discrepancy kills it for his pros, especially his professionalism grade.
He is one of the greatest teachers I have had in my entire academic career. It is true that he will make you work for your grade, but it is also true that with him you will learn more in one semester than you will learn with others in two years.
Great guy. You have to work to get good grades in his class. Rarely gives above a B. Class is fun and interresting though.
The class was interesting but Cox grades on content, not quality, of writing. A good class if you can formulate a basic thesis, but not the best for anyone with an appreciation for personal style, poetry, or metaphor. Definitely not into creative writing.
He's Ted, only for your writing, not your cooking. Great teacher. Great guy.
He is the toughest grader I've ever had but I've also learned a lot from him. Also, he's very approachable and easy to talk to. Plus, he understands that sometimes papers just don't get done in time!
Hard grader.. could only get a B paper out of him but lots of fun and great taste in books! Don't let the grade dissaude you from taking a class with him, really nice guy.
He's a nice professor who keeps the class interesting most of the time. He grades tough, but is very helpful if you see him during office hours to have anything cleared up. I highly recommend taking his class!
Great teacher, gives very clear directions and reasonable expectations. A fair grader - do not expect a good grade for beauty without substance, but if you have a solid thesis, strong ideas about whatever you've read, make clever connections/reflections, you'll see his appreciation and encouragement
Great guy. Hard grader. Will teach you alot. Very willing to help. Interresting discussions.
Fantastic professor - the first professor I've had that is truly exceptional. I don't think he teaches anything other than the college writing course, which is a shame. He's a hard grader, but too good of a teacher to pass up.
He's such a cool guy. Really hard grader but it's ok because you can revise. Class discussions are so fun! Take college writing with Professor Cox.
Fairly Easy and empassioned.
He's cool, but inflexible. I was the only true adult student in his class and it was hard to meet his demands. Not used to his students having lives outside of campus.
Cox is a man that loves his job. He seems to enjoy teaching people how to write. He is not an easy grader, but that doesn't mean most people get a C. It's just hard to get an A on a paper. You will learn alot in this class and will have fun doing just that. He opposes the five paragraph essay cult. That is why I love him most.BTW he reads this
He seems to love his job, and most importantly: he wants his students to grow as writers. He's a hard grader, it's extremely hard to get an A, but it's hard to fail too. It may not be the best class to pull up your GPA, but you learn a LOT. The class is a lot of fun too, engaging. I would recommend his class to anyone.
Good teacher. Kinda quirky, but the humor was enjoyable.
GREAT professor! REally tough trader, really..if you get a C in the class it should really be a B...that's how hard he is. I couldn't push a B on any paper. Amazing class discussions, very engaging, funny, witty, and overall he's amazing! Note that you'll also learn to become a good writer because he actually teaches!
Cox is so much fun! English... well, it's boring, but if you have to take it, take it with Cox. Not exactly the easiest grader, but he really made my mornings.
great professor and fair grader. assignments are hard but you have the opportunity to rewrite. good class discussions and relative stories. highly recommended!!
if you want an A, don't take his class. he's extremely helpful when you go to meet with him, but if you take his comments and apply them to your paper, you still won't get an A.
A great professor, but don't take this class if all you want is an A. If you do actually want to learn something about writing this is great. He's one of the few professors I've met who seems to really enjoy teaching, and he doesn't accept the minimal effort
Prof. Cox is the man. Seriously the best English class I have ever taken—I learned a lot from him. His lessons are well planned and he gives great feedback on essays. To reiterate what everyone else says: don't take him for the grade. Take him to actually learn something!
Attendance mandatory, he takes it seriously if you miss. Hard grader, unrealistic expectations. Doesn't give "As." Class discussions are pointless. He's intimidating and offers vague critique and advice, without giving clear directions on how to fulfill his expectations. Only take this class if you have to, don't expect to take much out of it.
smart guy, very lazy, he gives low grades to everyone even if you make the corrections that he asks for in your next paper, impossible to satisfy grade wise
Prof. Cox is a total nerd. In the best sense, of course. He's smart, funny, odd, and just about the best teacher I've ever had. He gives you tons of feedback on your writing and then expects you to do even more than he asks. (I don't get the lazy comment-you can tell he works hard and he's always around for office hours) He's awesome-have fun.
He is a very subjective grader and has vague and unreachable expectations for A's. I come from a strong writing background and yet he graded me harder than kids who couldn't form complete sentences. What a joke.
He is very hard, do not expect to get an A in the class or on any essay. Can be a little bit of a know it all and makes you feel like your writing is horrible. You do workshops in class for the 3 major essays and he gives you a chance to rewrite your essays. You don't have a lot of work other than a few books and essays.
Prof. Cox is a great teacher. I can honestly say I learned a lot in his class about writing. Although he is a tough grader, you will take a lot from the class even if you don't get an A. He is fun, approachable, and makes you feel comfortable in class.
Tough grader but I learned so much. A lot more than my roommate who took someone else. Comments on papers are amazing--they really tell you what to do to improve. Great books, all SciFi (SF). Totally recommend! Go to office hours. He's really helpful.
Rock Star. Legend. A God. I loved this class. He creates a cool, but dorky vibe. Great readings, funky assignments.
Great professor: Hilarious. Helpful. Awesome. Not an easy class at all. Hard work expected. Your writing will definitely improve. :)
Definitely a cool and fun professor. Can be intimidating to talk to. SUPER SUPER hard grader. If you thought you were a good writer in high school this class is an extreme wake up call. But he really does teach you a lot. My writing improved drastically over this past semester even though I didn't receive the grade I though I should have.
His grading system doesn't seem to follow any discernible template which definitely made it impossible to understand why he never gave anyone a grade higher than a B-. He will murder your GPA but the difficulty level will make future classes easier so make sure your parents know what your getting into.
What everyone is saying is true, it's next to impossible to get an A on any major assignment. However, most College Writing profs at AU are like that. Don't let that intimidate you! Cox is worth the dip to your GPA because his teaching style is engaging and in the end your writing will improve. You'll get a B, yes, but you'll also get an education.
Interesting enough and a generally well informed professor. His sense of humor seemed strange and there was pressure to speak up during class, but that's to be expected.
Tough grader, people are correct in saying that multiple times here. He'll make you work for your grade, just don't be afraid to show writer's voice and make sure to atleast skim the readings. The exercises are helpful so don't BS all of them. The first class he tells you, you won't get an A, but that just makes you want to fight all the harder.
Overall a really good professor. Instructions were always clear and feedback on assignments was helpful. Class was never boring and you WILL learn. It isn't a class you can just skirt through, but if you put your mind to it you can get an A. You'll get out of it what you put into it, don't expect any handouts.
Subjective in grading and blind to the fact that it is possible he doesn't actually know everything. Pompous and self absorbed removes opportunity for freedom or originality for students.
He can be so disagreeable sometimes. He can be nice though, but I think that all the Lit professors teach as though they have something to prove. He's unnecessarily harsh with grading. Sometimes he explains well, sometimes he doesnt. Dont expect an A either. No matter how hard you try, your writing will never be good enough for him.
Would you like to keep your soul? Because if you do avoid this class. I am not just salty because he is the hardest grader ever but you try to go in for help during office hours and he thinks your struggle is funny.... he thinks he is the funniest man, excuse me, god around. Does have a very organized syllabus! still though avoid like the plague!
Really funny/cool/geeky as a person…but as an English teacher, tended to piss people off. Harsh grader, but I never felt I was "progressing" in grades even when I thought I had improved. Only take if your other class loads are light…and only expect an A if you have already sold you soul to the devil.
Although the class was hard I got a lot out of it. He forces you to think and write well. He expects a lot from you but gives you the resources to do so. you have a lot of reading, but a doable amount. I learned a lot. Its not going to be an easy class but if your looking to be productive and learn, take his class.
Although it's true that Cox's lit class is a lot more rigorous than others, it's worth it. I learned how to write in this class, and that's something that I will always be able to use. Cox is tough but only because he knows that his students have the potential to be great writers. If you give your best effort, he will help you to succeed.
Very rude as a person, however is constructive in regard to your writing. Works you through the process for each assignment.
He gets a bad rep because of his in-class persona, but Cox truly is a nice guy who genuinely cares about his students. He does not 'give' A's - but you can get one if you work for it.
Assigns pointless but time consuming homework for every class. Avoid him at all costs.
The only thing I learned in this class was how to tailor my writing to exactly what he wanted. Not one person in our class got an A on the final paper, and a good portion of us worked very hard. It was a very disappointing class. Unless you're writing exactly what he wants, you won't get an A.
I decided to take his College Writing Seminar with a video game theme and I did not regret it. He is very clear and helpful, but don't expect an easy A. He expects you to work for your grade.
Cox actually taught me how to write and how to not procrastinate with my work. This class is not easy and you will have to do work but it is an incredible experience.
This professor was extremely difficult and did not have any empathy for his students. I used to credit myself on being a great writer, and this class made my confidence in my writing skills go down significantly. Also, he didn't seem to care much about the success of his students in this class.
Professor Cox was monotonous, fairly straightforward, and willing to listen. Cox often tried to teach through innovative techniques which often felt excessive or irrelevant. For the most part, you get what you put into it when it comes to Cox's class, although learning anything significant in this class is an uphill battle.
Prof Cox was my hardest professor this term (I took 7 classes) and it was honestly ridiculous. I worked with two of my old English teachers to get good grades on my papers and couldn't crack higher than a B on a paper. His project assignment sheets are always 3-6 pages of crazy requirements. I learned a lot about argument writing but it was insane.
What no one seems to realize is that any good freshman comp prof is going to be a tough grader. It's college, get used to it. Heard he's done some weird stuff in his office hours, but in class he was fine. The final assignment of the course was the most fun I've ever had writing a paper. Don't worry about your grade, just focus on learning.
I really liked Prof Cox, but I wasn't so hot on this class. I guess the goal of it is to prepare you for academia, so becoming purely a better writer takes a back seat to learning how to do a research project. Those are no fun. Still, if you're going into a research field, I'm sure this class pays dividends. For someone who's not, it's a drag.
He's the best teacher I've had. Unlike myprevious writing professors, he gives honest feedback that really helped me grow as a writer. He's a fair grader & is very passionate about what he does. The class is hard, there's a lot of work that's required of the student. However, if you email him or go to office hours, he's a huge help. 10/10 recommend
An extremely tough grader. He doesn't tend to give out A's on writing assignments, so just try to do well in participation, homework, and the midterm/final. He will teach you how to write, however, and you'll become a better writer because of his class.
Very tough grader, but gives assignments back with lots of comments and in a timely manner. Gives assignments with very limited time to complete. Writing department at AU is subpar, but Cox is on the better half. Last paper for 106 is 20 pages without works cited, but is interesting paper and topic is your choice. Prof is also very organized
Prof Cox's class challenged my ability as a writer, but the types of papers we wrote were unique and always interesting. Unfortunately, there's only two main papers: midterm and final. I found myself struggling to get my grade up after not doing so well on the first paper. However, he gives great feedback and is very willing to help.
Prof Cox is one of my favorite professors at AU. For 106, theres only 2 papers in the class and he will give you great feedback to make your writing stronger. They are researched based and you can choose what ever topic that interests you. Also great ready for his great metaphors:) they make the class interesting and memorable.
Gives extremely detailed feedback for papers. However, he is a very hard grader. He also gives papers due right before midterms and finals and he gives an actual midterm and final exam for a writing class. He is also very boring and tries to make a lot of jokes though he is not funny at all. He is one of the hardest WRTG 100 professors.
My writing got worse after taking his class. He makes you learn and write to his preference, not what you actually need to know for other classes. For instance, I learned in my 300 level international research class not to use "I" under any circumstances. His research paper encouraged us to do so...I thought he was useless and condescending
Professor Cox teaching style was horrific. His lessons had absolutely nothing to do with what we were working on, and he grades extremely hard. I would choose a different writing professor if I had the chance.
Take him for WRTG106 & be prepared to get what you give. His criteria are clear and he stays organized and timely. Office hours are great. To succeed, be honest with your excitement about a topic and pursue it. He'll encourage you. Class time is not always used effectively, but the feedback is to die for. I'm still referencing the papers I wrote!
Prof. Cox is really funny and has a great personality. He connects with the kids to make them happy and cheer them up. However, he is a hard grader too. We only had 3 main papers to write and he graded very difficult. MAKE SURE TO PARTICIPATE AND SHOW UP TO CLASS AND DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE! He does notice and WILL deduct points from your final grade
Your grade is determined by 3 major papers but it is almost impossible to get an A on them. I worked so hard on my first paper for him only to get a C. Heavy readings for outside of class and lectures are extremely boring, you just review the readings. Boring, impossible to please, contradicts himself, do not take his class!
I would not recommend him to other students. There is lots of reading and he was not accommodating when students were having technical/mental health issues throughout the semester online. He gives projects with lots of "possibilities" which just means he doesn't have clear grading criteria, made ever worse by the fact that he's a hard grader.
Super passionate about what he's teaching; however, he is a very strict grader and sometimes isn't the clearest in what he expects. The papers are the hardest and don't expect anything higher than a B. He has very high expectations in a freshmen-level class and gives comprehensi advice when asking for specific feedback. Try to find another teacher.
Cox is the worst professor I've ever had. He stormed out of class and didn't give us the respect he expected to get. Class discussion could only be about what he wanted to talk about, and he talked the whole class. The assignments didn't have clear grading criteria. If you didn't write what he wanted, he gave you a bad grade. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!
This man is seriously overcompensating for something wrong in his life. He thinks he's better than everyone, especially his students.
Professor Cox had to deal with rude and dramatic students in my class who had no intention of learning from him. He did his best with the situation and made the course material complex and interesting. If he teaches the fantasy class again, I would definitely recommend it. My writing and critical thinking skills improved a lot in this class.
Don't take his Fantasy class. We read very little actual fantasy. His grading is bad. He sets unclear standards for every project and then grades harshly when instructions are misinterpreted. When asked for feedback, he is vague and unhelpful. He discourages students from meeting with him. I love Fantasy, but this class was just awful.
Wouldnt recommend his class. Hes extremely unclear in his assignments and grading criteria. Overly harsh grader. Lectures feel redundant. Not open to student input. Actively discouraged meeting with him. When students asked questions it felt like he was just waiting for them to finish so he could talk about what he wanted. Disappointing overall.
Professor is very discussion and reading heavy. He wants discussion but is very inflexible went it comes to how things go and expects a lot. Little time for projects but passionate about the content. When it comes to projects aka sometimes papers, he is a very tough grader. You really cannot bypass any homework in this class.
This man hated nothing more than technology and his students. He must have been compensating for something in his life, as he had the biggest ego I've ever seen of a professor. He also would not let us use laptops or phones in his class. Avoid this professor at all costs!
I took myth fantasy and meaning. I liked the readings and class discussions. The main sections were fairytales, mythology and the "American myth." I liked these topics and the readings exposed you to new stories and cultures. The assignments are pretty research/writing intense. It is easy to do well if you do the homework.
I really liked Professor Cox as a person and as a teacher. He was very nice and funny, and did try to make it easier. We had 3 papers and a project along with mini homework assignments which weren't hard. He does require you buy the books for his class, but you can find them online. His grading is fair and some of the material is hard to grasp.
Cox is passionate about what he teaches, however is not caring or flexible. Be sure to participate so that you don't receive pop quizzes. Discussion & power-point based as well as lots of group/peer activities. Some of the articles were fun and engrossing to read but this class kind of ruined writing for me with his unreasonable rubric.
Professor Cox was nice with good intentions but relies solely on Canvas and refuses to talk to students outside of it. There were many occasions where I asked myself "Why is he being so rude right now". Luckily, all the assignments are forward pretty straight. He was fine I just thought his name suited him by the end of the semester.
Professor Cox has engaging lectures but is definitely a tough grader. He was nice about giving extensions on assignments but only had large projects in the gradebook. He definitely expects you to do the assigned readings, so be prepared to read some long pieces before each class.
He's a good instructor if you're the type of student who needs a lot of repetition. His feedback could be a little vague. My advice to get a good grade would be don't use your own style or take any liberties with the assignments and try to follow the rubric as closely as possible.
He's awesome if you are up to the challenge. If you choose to participate and do the writing, he will absolutely do his work for you. Plus hes just honestly and awesome guy and I love talking to him.
Cox is awesome. He's super fun and his assignments are never dull. You get to write about... basically whatever you want in the genre he is teaching. I haven't had an english/writing class that has challenged me in the same way.. ever.
I took Words of Wonder with Professor Cox and had a wonderful time! There are three major projects, all of which we had plenty of time/resources/workshops to improve them with, and otherwise there's a participation grade and a super easy final reflection. The fantasy material we read was great too, especially "23 Monkeys, Also the Abyss."
He really wanted us to succeed in his class and even though he was a tough grader, he gave really helpful feedback and I can tell I definitely improved as the semester went on. He was really respectful of my accommodations and there were even times when he let me modify things to make it accessible for me. Overall I would take him again.
I felt like during my first semester at American, I had learned the most from this class. It was tough at first adjusting to academic writing, but I think his feedback is very helpful. There are only 4 graded assignments in this class, so that is a little daunting. Overall, he is very funny and will help your writing in the long run!
Professor Cox is an excellent professor if you're looking for someone teaching WRTG-106! He is witty, caring, and at times he can be sassy - but it's all in good fun and for the benefit of your learning experience! Be ready to write/read before most classes and participate when you meet!
This course is tough and fast-paced as we were always working on big assignments during the semester along with some additional readings and journal entries, so it requires a good amount of focus and participation. Professor Cox is helpful with his feedback and a nice, open-minded guy, although he's a tough grader and a bit geeky with his humor.
Prof Cox was great and was always helpful. I actually learned more than I expected to in class and appreciated his teaching style. But there is definitely a lot of work to do and this class moves very quickly. Prof Cox does great to walk us thru the semester but be sure to put in equal efforts or you'll fall behind and become swamped with work.
Prof. Cox is a good professor, if you understand the way that he teaches, you're always a few steps ahead of where you are supposed to be on an essay, which made it confusing about the expectations of a lot of essays, generally an intense writing course and a lot of work but if you're up for it, he'll be great for you
Tough grader and expects papers to be completed in his exact writing style. Doesn't allow laptops or other devices to be present during class. This class reminded me of a high school class.
If you can take another professor, do it. Cox is fine but if you're not writing in the exact style that he likes, he's pretty harsh. He's also kind of rude and dismissive when you need help sometimes.
Was a very condescending teacher, gave good feedback on assignments but was very strict about what he wanted. Tried to make simple concepts sound new and profound. Attendance is mandatory and very hard to get an A.
Honestly all you really have to do in his classes is read the directions and participate. Otherwise he's a really fun professor :)
While this was a tough class, he challenges you to rethink the way that you write. Honestly, it helped me a lot going forward. Gives a lot of feedback, time for revision. Rubrics were kind of abstract, but that is the whole point.
Prof. Cox runs a challenging yet rewarding WRTG106 class. His teaching style takes adjusting, but engaging with it pays off. unstuck study and the free textbook were lifesavers for acing the assignments.
Prof. Cox is a very harsh grader and his baseline for all of the major assignments is a B, meaning you will have to do extra work to get an A. His homework is busy work and his lectures are unhelpful and confusing.
Word of Wonder: Overall, professor Cox is an alright teacher. His class is fantasy literature focused so if you like fantasy stories (and articles talking about fantasy) you'll have a good time as all of the reading assignments (which are almost every class) requires you to read them. My class didn't have many discussion opportunities however.
Professor Cox was a decent writing professor. There were only 2 papers and a recorded presentation, so there weren't many big grades that counted. In-class work involved partners or teams giving critical feedback, which was only as helpful as your groupmates. Would recommend if you are a strong writer and need to fulfill your WRT 106 requirement.
Strict attendance, locked students out, said the newest class failed AU. He would get frustrated very easily and would often make questionable remarks towards the students and TA. Definitely do not recommend.
Prof. Cox is a tough writing professor, but one that will make you better. Entire class builds up to a long academic essay that feels substantial. Caring guy who will be receptive if you reach out to him. Gives good principles of academic writing in tune with contemporary thought -- great pointers on how to use the first person in academia.
Most of the class-related work was four main projects and journal entries about readings. I thought the course work wasn't super hard and most of what we read was interesting. He tries his best to engage students, which I appreciated. The discussions weren't the best, but I think that's less on him and more on the lack of class participation.
prof cox is a tough grader and sometimes nitpicks on grades but it's with good intent and makes you a better analyze/writer. just follow the rubrics and you'll be fine. lots of readings (make sure you take notes) and be prepared to discuss in class. overall a funny professor who's really accessible; he stresses communication
Professor Cox is fun in class and has a great rapport with his students. The class is structured like an intro to writing about literature though, so it can be a slog at times. Four unit projects + a final, each with very strict criteria. Not much to say, the class was fine and a good choice for complex problems. Better if you befriend classmates.
He is a cool guy; the projects are like a 5/10 on hardness but the feedback he gives is never direct and requires more thinking.
If you do the work, you do well. He is super picky about attendance/timeliness but as long as you are respectful and show up to work he is fine. Projects are daunting but again, do the work and follow the rubric and you're fine. As a non-writing person it wasn't fun or enjoyable to me and his personality didn't fit me, but it wasn't a bad class
