Dr. Dufour is fun, enthusiastic, patient and loves both his subject and teaching it, too. Supportive and approachable. One warning--his tests are quite hard, which he openly admits. The good news? He grades on the curve, so even if you tank a test, you could get a decent grade. Moderate work load. Overall, a great guy.
He's an awesome professor. Seems to love what he does and is very clear and enthusiastic in the way he runs the class. Very open to help anybody and really cares about his students. Awesome professor!
Brilliant man. Hard tests but well worth the time and energy.
I loved this class- I had it at 8 in the morning yet he managed to keep my attention. He made the material interesting by using lots of examples, that were always very funny! As long as you study the lecture notes and do the reading you will do fine-It's well worth it!
Amazing guy. Very enthusiastic. Hard tests, but more than worth taking the class. Kept my attention for an 8 o'clock am class.
He's okay but too many digressions
Awesome, interesting, enthusiastic. I love this class because of him! He gives funny examples and keeps you awake
Amazing professor! His many example help you understand the subject and they are all very funny! Always keeps my attention and makes me want to attend his class! Highly recommend him
I guess he was not my type.He certainly seems to impress others.
A very enthusiastic and attention-grabbing teacher. He gets the class involved in his lectures and gives spot on examples. As long as you attend each class and jot down notes, there's almost no need to study very much for the exams. His lectures were very beneficial in learning the material.
Amazing teacher, uses topics like alcohol to get students attention. Tests can be difficult, but he grades on a curve. He is entertaining and knows his stuff. Test material is half from the book and half from the lectures, but there is overlap. Overall, I highly recommend him as an intro psych teacher.
Good guy, but it seems like he could care more about his class. Entertaining and gives good lectures. The book is used just as much if not more in tests compared to lecture notes. So you have to read the book, and def go to class
tests are all multiple choice. He keeps you focused on topic
He's a great guy. You've just gotta do the typical school thing: show up to class, take notes, and take the exams. Easiest thing by far.
Dr. Dufour is awesome. I took his social psychology class and he made everything make perfect sense. His stories were always amusing, easy to relate to, and really helped give a clear explanation of the material. He knows what's up with college students and is a really cool guy. Take his class if you can.
A very good teacher who really knows his stuff. His enthusiasm is contagious. The only drawback is he tries a little too hard to be funny at times.
Great class! Dr. Dufour really knows how to keep your attention and make class interesting. His stories are great and explain main concepts very well. Definately take a few courses with him if you can!
Awesome guy, fun to learn from.
One of my favorite 5 profs ever.....and I did 6 years in college. He's entertaining and interesting. You will learn a lot, but have to work at it. Take him.
He is an amazing professor. He relates everything to real life, which really helps in learning the material. He expects you to be in class, and you must take all the exams. He takes "2/3" from lecture and "2/3" from the book, there is a lot of overlap. best professor i've had. if you get a chance to take a class with him, do it.
He's okay but the style did not work for me.
I thought his class was pretty easy and interesting. He keeps the class fun, unlike other professors. Take notes directly from the board. I studied only from the nots and got a B in the class, would have done better if I used the book probably. Overall pretty good!
Dufour's lectures are well planned and he tells stories that not only illustrate the principals he's teaching but they are funny and memorable. You need your notes to study for the tests but you will remember the stories easily. It has been easy to succeed in this class. An excellent and energetic teacher. Highly recommended.
Hard Tests. Interesting lectures and text. Highly recomended
Easy class-grades on a curve. Funny professor and cares deeply about the class.
Funny professor, keeps people attentive in class. Allowed 9 absences all semester, but you wont want to miss a class, as theyre funny and he covers a lot thats not in the book, but it is on the tests. Explains stuff clearly, despite not using slideshows.
I took his class my first semester and had to drop it because had an infection that came on quickly and completely incapacitated me. He refused to let me retake a test because I had not emailed him before hand, or went to campus health center. I went to the center and had my illness confirmed. He still would not let me retake it.
Only class that can keep me awake without having to browse the internet to keep interest.
Sometimes mean, but funny and engaging professor
I am really glad I took his class for my first semester. I enjoyed his class so much, I am now in his social psychology class and hope to take his history of psychology class and psychology statistics. He's great!!
Loved this class. Loved his teaching. so interesting and inspired me to get a psych minor (also a really easy minor in general). people said his class was tough, just read and take good notes and study them, i found it to be easy. overall GREAT professor. i would definitely take a class with him again.
Love his class! So much fun. It's always interesting and he usually makes it kind of funny. Enjoy this class thoroughly :D
Didn't care for his teaching style at all. Not open to opinions of others. Seemed to be preoccupied with outside interests.
He is an interesting in class but takes FOREVER to get grades back and is lazy when it comes to email questions, dumping all responsibility onto his teaching assistant.
Good professor, tests are all scaled. Classes are usually entertaining, but he is impossible to email questions to.
Dr. Dufour is easily one of the best professors I've had at UMaine. He actually lectures and doesn't just stand in front of the class with a power point presentation. Lectures are interesting, and he teaches in a way that not only is easy to understand, but helps you remember the material. Go to class and study.
Really enjoyed this class. Dr. Dufour's lectures make the material interesting and understandable, and he brings a lot of humor and energy. That said, he's very opinionated and blunt, and while it doesn't bother me, I can see how it could get on other people's nerves. He also has a tendency to be a few minutes late.
He is brilliant. Covers material very well, and is clear. Makes things interesting. He is so funny and has great energy. Study, and go to class and you're golden. Its an amazing class
He's a good professor, but his style is very harsh, straight forward, and brutal. Get the book, half of his tests are directly from it. If you can get over his bluntness and learn, you'll do fine. Just don't make my mistake: Go to class! If you miss even a few, you'll immediately start getting a lower grade.
A solid psych professor. He made the long class period slightly less boring with his funny examples. The workload is fairly light, with only a few assignments and a paper in addition to three exams (which were based on both the text and examples from lecture). Though he can be forgetful at times, he's engaging and easy to talk to.
Great professor, funny and caring but also treats you like an adult and expects you to act as a responsible one!
this class is intense. dr. dufour will challenge you , make you think beyond the textbook and make you come to class. do not come into this class thinking bcuz this is an intro its easy bcuz its anything but. you will have to study HARD,.. but it is worth it and you will learn so much. come to class, read the text book and learn to love psychology
His teaching style is, as another said, harsh/brutal. He's very blunt and expects alot of you. Sometimes he seemed very aloof. I got an A in his class by reading, taking good notes, and showing up (although I had taken psych in HS and this class was similar). If you are able to get past his manner, he is very informative and sometimes funny.
He definitely utilizes his class time enough to not want to miss a class! He's pretty funny and doesn't give much homework if any at all...
Dr. Dufour doesn't baby you. He expects you to work like a college student. He is very nice and very knowledgable. Commentary on his life makes him relatable.
Dufour is a very funny teacher. What he teaches is very clear and not that hard to grasp.
Dufour is a master of his Field. He goes through the course at a rather quick pace. If you are not attentive or attending the class, you will fall behind. His humor in the lecture is appreciated. However, he ahs high expectations for each student; for them to carry their load and do the work required. Not an easy course. But an very interesting.
Dr. Dufour is a wonderful teacher, if you attend class and pay attention you learn so much from him. He's also a very funny guy, and very fair when it comes to grading. I would HIGHLY recommend him for any class.
Dufour keeps his lectures interesting and entertaining. But beware, make sure you show up, do not use your phone, and read the book. While his lectures are great, they only cover about 40% of what is on the test, for the rest you need to make sure you read, which can be quite time consuming. But if you do that, it's a pretty easy class.
Best class and teacher! Dufour is extremely engaging, funny and relateable. Makes psych interesting and enjoyable. Tests are directly from his notes and the book. No tricks, just study. He doesn't permit electronics but he teaches at reasonable pace.
Great class, great teacher. Very interesting lectures. Attend the class, do the readings, and you'll do fine.
If you attend class and read the book you will get a good grade. He only covers about 30% of the book in class. Overall he is very funny and even know I was not a psych major he made everything interesting to me. Good class just keep up on the readings
He's a great guy, and I love his teaching. You're allowed six absences for the semester. Class was generally interesting, but exams were a big challenge.
He is a really great teacher. He makes the class very interesting to go to, and you are still allowed 6 absences. He is one of the teachers that you really need to read the book to succeed on the tests. It really isn't that bad if you pay attention in class and keep up with readings. Definitely take him!
Dufour is a great teacher! It's easy to tell that he loves to teach and that he's very passionate about psychology. His tests in this particular course are a bit harder than most tests you would take in a 100 level class, but as long as you study and take detailed notes, doing well should not be an issue. I highly recommend Dufour!
An amazing professor! Obviously very interested in his subject. He uses memorable examples to get his point across. Very interesting lectures.
Read the book. Go to most lectures. Do the Friday Quizzes (they take 15 minutes if you don't watch the whole video). You'll get an A++++...the people who say Dufour is difficult don't read the book so they fail his exams.
AMAZING!!!
Dufour is a great professor and hi classes are really engaging and interesting but the tests are really hard if you do not study alot. He always curves because most of the time the highest grade would be like a 69 -70 so then that would be an A and then goes down from there. A lot of the stuff on the test was not in the book or lectures but good cl
Great teacher! His lectures are extremely important to attend, seeing as his exams are partly based on exact concepts you go over in class. The lectures themselves are mostly intriguing - he has a passion for the subject, so he brings in personal experiences which make the subject interesting! Don't try ace his exams without reading the book!
Dufour was a really good professor. Although I didn't receive an A in the class, I still managed to do well with a B+. I achieved that B+ by attending his lectures and reading the textbook. As long as you do those two things, you'll pass the class with flying colors. He's a very funny guy and I was always glad I went to his class
My favorite professor at the university. I've taken 2 classes with him. His lectures are very interesting, you learn a lot. Just attend class, take notes and read the textbook before exams and you will do well and learn a lot.
I loved this class. A lot of people say otherwise because they don't like that you have to actually read the book and take notes in class because he doesn't hand out any sort of study guides or homework. He's a cool dude, has a sense of humor, and is extremely knowledgable. Read the book, go to class, take lecture notes, and you're all set.
Great teacher! He's there if you need help and sets good guidelines throughout the course.
Dufour is an awesome Professor! I loved going to class! He has a fun sense of humor and is very fair! Do the research credits, do the quizzes, go to class, and you should get a B. I recommend Dr. Dufour!
Pretty good teacher. I only took this class because I had to, but he made it interesting and fun. If you have to take this class then he is definitely the one to take it with.
Dufour is amazing! Not only was he incredibly accommodating when I was struggling with difficult personal issues that hindered, he is one of the few professors who could keep a class engaged for the entirety of a three hour lecture each week. I highly recommend taking research methods with him.
Dr. Dufour scared me my first day. He came off as very stern and unwilling to help. I'm glad I gave him the chance. He blew away all my misconceptions about a psychology class and made what I thought was a mundane subject very fun - and easy - to learn, and is there to help if you need him. Just remember this is college, so study at home, too.
Dr. Dufour's been my go-to professor for years. I have had a difficult, unexpected personal life during college and he has been there for me with advice, answers, and allowed me to make-up exams & use extra time when I had a NOTE. He's equally fair, funny & smart & will help you if your willing to help yourself and try. He helped me to succeed.
By far my favorite professor. You must attend class, which was never a problem for me because he is HILARIOUS. He incorporates humor in his lectures to help you learn the material and boy does it work. His exams are tough & you better read the textbook, but this is a professor that you'll never forget (in a good way). I'd take another class by him.
I've taken 3 or 4 classes with Dr. Dufour now and am enrolled for another in the spring. He's funny, he tries really hard to make even the dullest subject interesting, and if you work hard he is very accommodating to your needs. Even when I had to drop this class he was great about it and treated me with way more decency and respect than I expected
Dufour is quite the character. You'll have some hilarious lectures, but you'll need to study a lot to do well in the class. If you want a C, whatever, but if you want an A, you'll have to always attend class and participate in the clicker questions.
Dr. Dufour is an amazing professor and a highly knowledgeable psychologist. He makes psychology interesting, and he is funny as hell. Great professor. Tough class, but worth it.
Dufour is a great professor, he's hilarious, but get ready to work
Dufour is a fantastic professor. He relates real-life experiences to the material studied in class and he is hilarious. I think his lectures were the only ones I actually could not wait to attend. Get ready to read because to get a good grade on tests you have to consider both the reading and lectures. But it's totally worth it.
Lectures are the best-- I go because I WANT to not because I shouldhave to. Gives really good examples and helps you learn things in an easier fashion. Really tough tests however. Takes a lot of studying and reading to do well on the tests. Overall great class.
If you've taken 100 or 200 level classes with him know that he is very different with his 400 level students. He still expects a lot but he also is far more helpful and willing to guide you along. The exams are mixed multiple choice and essay-- do study, don't stress. There is a partnered project so make a friend early on. Attend class.
By far my favorite professor at the University of Maine for the time I've been there (only rivaled by my ERS101 professor David Lux.) He's a very fair professor and his sense of humor makes the class worth attending even if you're not interested in the course material. I would take it again in a heartbeat, I highly recommend him for PSY100.
Be awake for his lectures and pay attention. It's very easy to miss something important.
I found Dr. Dufour to be really condescending. He also doesn't go off any written notes slides or powerpoints so you're left trying to take notes off of what he says verbally which makes it really difficult to catch everything.
It's not a super hard class, but you do need to put effort into it. If you don't show up or read the chapters, tests and quizzes will be difficult. But the material is interesting and he is super funny and engaging, kind of a smart ass but it makes the class fun. I would recommend.
Dr. Dufour is very funny and makes his lectures meaningful and exciting so you won't forget them.
Dufour is a funny guy and really can relate to topics that his students understand. His tests are hard but, he grades on a curve. You will fail unless you read every chapter in the book, which you basically have to because there's an online quiz every other week. 4 tests, 10 quizzes. He takes attendance. And he HATES computers/phones/etc.
Class is tough, but he is very funny and approachable. Do study and you will get a good grade.
Exams are a little tough unless you go through the textbook and take good notes in class. He doesn't use powerpoints, so you really have to pay attention to what he writes on the board.
Hate this class. This guy needs to get with the times and allow students to take notes from a laptop and not just paper. It's 2015, not 1950. Also his test's are way too difficult.
Dr. Dufour is an absolute riot. It was one of the few classes that I have taken where I have actually WANTED to go to class. He makes learning the material very enjoyable. However, he isn't very clear as to what will be covered on the exams and you absolutely have to read the textbook in order to pass the class.
Dufour is the man! He keeps the lectures interesting and gives great examples. His tests are on the tougher side but are definitely nothing out of the ordinary. I'd definitely take a course with Dufour again.
Although his lectures are mostly him talking, Dufour is a hilarious guy who is very very intelligent. He knows his psychology and makes lectures interesting to keep us students listening. Very tough exams. Read the chapters and take good notes during the lecture.
Really clear, relatable, and funny.
He teaches so many students that he will say not to expect any one-on-one help from him. Quizzes are due online almost every Tuesday, use these questions to study for exams. Use Quizlet. One unit isn't in the book, so all lecture notes (instead of his usual 50%) will be used on the exams. Show up on time and don't leave early if you want credit.
Dr Dufour is brilliant, very interesting and informative lectures. Even if you don't need this course, take it!
Dufour has honestly been my favorite professor that I've had here at Umaine. I wish he could teach all of my classes.
Dufour teaches a very informative class with some very funny moments. You have to show up and read the textbook as his tests are very difficult. Miss too many classes and you miss out on vital material for the test.
Dufour is hilarious, this is a well known fact. Psy 101 itself was tough for me but mainly because so much of the hw is done through an online lab that you buy. The lab is tough to use and won't work on a chromebook/notebook or similar device. Dufour himself is a good teacher, explains things well, and classes are worth attending.
BY FAR the best teacher I've had in college for far. His classes are lectures but I assure you won't be bored. This guy is hilarious and really presents the material in a way that makes in easy to understand and enjoyable. I cannot recommend him enough and can't wait to take another one of his classes!!
Dufour is an AMAZING professor, as long as you're mildly interested in psych and are willing to actually put some time into this class. His lectures are incredible, and the tests aren't that hard as long as you read the text book and take good notes. All in all, I would recommend this class and professor, just don't think you can do nothing.
DuFour gives entertaining lectures that I enjoyed attending (plus if u miss more than 6 he starts deducting ur grade). His exams (curved) were an equal balance of questions based on material from the textbook & lectures. Online quizzes make up 20% of your grade & can be super easy if you do the practice questions at the end of each chapter!
Dufour is a great professor, if you go to class and take notes you will find that he keeps you engaged while also explaining the material in a way that you can easily understand and relate to. You MUST read the textbook, this is no secret as he emphasizes it multiple times. If you don't read the text book you most likely won't pass.
Dr. Dufour is clearly very passionate about psychology and teaching it to new generations. He keeps lectures interesting, so even if the material isn't interesting to you, class is still worth attending.
I found him to be one of the most enjoyable professors of my entire year so far. He taught me the information in a way that was easy to understand and amusing enough to care about. He was wonderful.
DuFour was actually a fantastic professor. He didn't go completely by the book, but still taught us everything we needed to know. Furthermore, he was humorous while he did so, making it easier to listen to him. In terms of the tests, they could be a bit tricky, but not so bad if you study.
Listening to Dufour lecture is one of the reasons I became a psych major. He clearly loves teaching and is understanding of student learning but also pushes you to know a lot from both the book and lectures on exams. He is also super funny even though he tells the same stories on repeat a lot. Would highly recommend taking any class with him!
Dr. Dufour was a great professor as far as knowing what he's talking about and the teaching aspect. The class I found very challenging because of the way the tests are worded. The only thing that helps you is that he curves the tests but even with that it barely helps. The quizzes are timed but pretty easy if you read right before you take them.
Dufour is hilarious and incredibly smart. I didn't study for the tests or read the textbook and ended up with a C+ which I thought was fair with the amount of work I (didn't) put in. Each test is worth 20% (4) and the overall online quiz average is 20%. He is a great professor, but I've heard his tests are the hardest.. up to you what you want.
He is very straightforward with his grading, which is thoroughly outlined in the syllabus. He makes his lectures interesting and funny, while still full of information. Easily one of my favorite professors so far.
Dr. Dufour was the best! I took this class just to get another class in for the semester and didn't think I'd like it but it ended up being my favorite class of the semester. I couldn't wait to go to his lectures, he is so funny and teaches in a way that really made the information click for me. I recommend taking this class 100%.
Dufour taught me the material for PSY100 well. He's just not approachable. He doesn't want you to email him or ask a lot of "dumb" questions. He's kind of funny, but very weird. Also, the TA's are only there for show, they don't have any help to offer.
Dufour was by far the best professor I've had. Lectures are hilarious and always worth attending - he makes them really fun. The tests are specific but he grades on a curve so it's totally possible to get an A. If you read the textbook and your class notes you'll be fine.
Overall, I really enjoyed this professor and his class! I had some friends who thought that this course was hard and stressful but I thought otherwise. He told a lot of hilarious stories in class and they always related to the class discussion. I respect this man a lot and wish I had shook his hand on the day of my final!!
Great teacher. Took the combination course from 5:30 to 9 pm (once a week) and it was. great discussion. He has great lectures that actually help you understand what is going on in class. Of course, there is homework, and quizzes and exams but they aren't that bad as long as you go to class and pay attention.
Loved the lectures. He makes the content easy to understand with examples and is very knowledgeable on the topics. Lectures aren't posted online, so it's a good idea to come to class. Quizzes are easy, and the exams are very straightforward. Read the textbook and take good notes, and it's an easy A. Read the syllabus before emailing him questions.
awesome professor, my favorite part of class is when he gets into arguments with himself.
You will have to read the chapters to be prepared for the exams, his lectures hardly go over half of the chapters content. He tells a lot of stories to get his point across which kind of helps. The only grades for this class are five exams and then quizzes that add up to one more exam.
Dufour was amazing. He was hilarious, told incredible stories that were surprisingly relevant to the material, and he's straightforward. He has a great attendance policy (up to 8 absences that won't count against you), and the grading is straight forward. Your grade is wholly made up of 5 exams and some quizzes, and the final isn't cumulative,
Great teacher! 10 out of 10 would take this class with him. He's a great lecturer who knows what he's talking about. Take notes, study hard, go to class and you'll pass the class.
I search for his classes every semester, no matter what he's teaching. He is by far the best instructor I've had at UMaine. In anything other than PSY100, he makes learning so easy without busywork quizzes. Great textbooks that you actually learn from. His lectures are worth attending, especially if you want to do well on the exams. He rocks, man.
Dufour is an amazing professor, I just such at Psychology. I probably would've failed if I had taken the class with someone else. Only grades are the 5 exams and quizzes (the quizzes total one exam so six exams basically). You also have to do SONA studies but they're easy, sign up early. Great guy and great teacher.
Only grades are the 5 exams and quizzes but exams are really hard to get good grade.
took a class with Dufour and loved it. he is very intelligent and has an entertainingly engaging style of teaching. he is very lenient with absences and from my personal experience i feel as if he cares about your grade as an individual. i was in a lecture with over 300 kids so obviously it was hard to take notes, as he does not allow recording.
Dr. Dufour gives the most incredible lectures! I learned so much in his class.
You can tell he cares and puts in time is his lectures. He has 4 exams worth 20% each and a series of quizzes worth the last 20%, very easy to do well on all the quizzes. His tests are difficult but if you study and use the free eText you can do well on them. Great personality that makes lectures easy to listen to.
This teacher keeps students interested you get to skip class but this teacher makes you want to go to class all the time.
Dr. Dufour is interesting. He adds an eccentric energy to what you would think is a boring subject, which I appreciate, but he seems like a completely different person during exams and outside of class; strict and doesn't want anything to do with his students. I wish the final grade wasn't dependent on the exam results. Could've been more to it.
Psychology is not a hard topic to understand with some practice but this man makes it impossible. His lectures seem helpful at the moment but then when you get the exam you don't know any of the material. HAVE to read the textbook because that's really all you have. He knows his exams are very challenging but does not seem to change that. big curve
Seems to know his stuff, but disrespects students.
He is a very good and funny professor. You have to be willing to read closely because there are reading quizzes for homework. But, as long as you read and go to the lectures you will get great grades. You don't have to go to the lectures to pass but it is a small part of your grade and he is very entertaining and informative, so go to them!
He initially seemed kind of rude and cold. But he turned out to be a funny and very good teacher. He gives really helpful examples to make sure you understand what he is teaching. The tests were not that bad if you studied because they were graded on a curve. The online quizzes were really hard but you get three chances. Definitely go to class.
Dufour is a fine professor, he makes things a little difficult and isn't great for going to for help, but if you listen, take notes, study and read the textbook, you'll do just fine. If you neglect these things, you'll fail and he will not help you out.
Great professor, definitely knows the content and teaches it well. If you pay attention and take some notes in class you will do better than most. He also provides online quizzes that are actually a great resource to use for studying. The quizzes and tests are the only things that impact your grade. He uses a Heavy Curve too.
I took General Psychology in Spring 2020 due to its requirement in my major. He made class worth going to, as he is funny and informational. However, when we were sent home due to COVID-19, he was a little harsh regarding a certain time the lectures via Blackboard would be up. I get you want students to succeed, but this is hard for all of us?
Dufour is a great lecturer. His lectures were 3 hours long and I still looked forward to every one. He provides fun anecdotes that increase understanding and memory retention. He also kept up the quality of his lectures when we had to switch to remote due to covid. Definitely take a class with this guy.
I have seriously never had a better professor. I hope anyone looking to take a psychology class winds up with him, I can't begin to say how much I've learned. These are not low effort classes but it is worth it, I find myself deeply interested in what/how we learn.
Took this class for an easy A and as a Psych Major, it has zero benefits to you. For a class that fills none of your requirements, there is far too much work including reading quizzes, ProjectMe reports, MRQ's as well as exams. His grading makes little to no sense with his point system. Do not take this class unless you want to be over-stressed.
This class was originally online anyway so the format did not change due to the pandemic. Psychology of motivation was a very interesting topic. The class consists of; Weekly quizzes, weekly short writing prompts, a term goal which we write about, three exams, and term goal end reports (3). Overall if you do the work, you will pass the class
The content of this course was interesting (and worth learning); can be applied to improve one's self or used to help others in a clinical setting. Grading policy is (more than) fair AND easy to understand if you read the syllabus. Work load is average and not difficult to complete. Friendly professor. Put forth the effort and you'll be fine. 10/10
Format was reading chapters and taking notes on lectures he posted. Very specific on what times you can watch them (so you can't work at your own pace). Exams are multiple choice and he's a relatively easy grader, but I found a lot of the class to be tedious. For example, he'll reiterate most of what you have read in the textbook in his lectures.
I had Mr. Dufour for PSY 100 my sophomore year. He's a super friendly dude and is one of the nicer professors I've had. That being said, Holy Crap, this guy has the hardest Exams I've ever taken. Even with online classes, he manages to cram 30 questions in 20 minutes which barely gives you time to read the questions let alone decide on an answer.
This is my third PSY course with Dufour and I think he is fantastic! Social Psych is a very interesting topic to me and I've learned so much about why we/others do what we do (in the social context) from this class! Grading is fair; workload is average. Writes his own exams and the questions are relevant to the material taught in class. Cool dude!
PSY 100 and PSY 251. One of my favorite professors, good at using real-life situations and humor to discuss class topics. If taken in person, he requires any notes to be handwritten (no laptops) he does not use slides, all material is spoken and main points are written on the board. Fair grader, READ THE TEXT.
His lectures are good and the class itself is great. He is rude to students constantly and will not answer questions without a flippant remark. Take the class if you need a credit count otherwise, steer clear
His exams are 75 questions to complete in 1 hour. This is less than a minute per question. His exams are already difficult, so this gives people barely enough time to read the question let alone answer it. Final exams are supposed to be 2 hour blocks his was 60 minutes. Avoid this class.
Exams weren't that bad at all if you read the text, watched all of the lectures, and took great notes. Very easy to complete the exam in the allotted time-frame. Grades fairly. Only time I lost points on the MRQ is when I waited until the last minute and didn't fully consider/complete them as a result. Overall pretty nice dude. Interesting topics.
His lectures are actually very interesting, and hes a nice enough to guy. Not particularly helpful outside of class, and his tests are super hard considering this is a basic class. Test average in my class was low, 50-60% which means he grades on ridiculous curve so students dont fail. But if you go to class, and read+study you will do fine
Attendance is somewhat mandatory, you have about 6 absences but if you miss class it's hard to catch up. His examples are really good and helpful but if you aren't used to a lecture format this is not the class for you, he doesn't use slides and doesn't use online notetaking.
Not a lot of grades throughout the semester. No homework; just reading the textbook. Study hard for exams. Most of the exam info is from class, so don't skip. Very entertaining lecturer and really enjoyed his class.
Right on the first day Dr. Dufour brags about how difficult his exams are and how he always needs to curve them. However, he neglects to understand that he is the common denominator in why people do so poorly on exams. He also gets extremely political during his lectures. One of the most condescending professors I have ever had with "Dufours Dozen"
If you took any AP class in high school, you'll be fine. Reading the textbook is super important for exams and attendance is really important. The exams are difficult but if you start studying 3 days before you'll be more than fine.
Unfortunately I had to take this as a junior, but that also gives me a good perspective on the course. Right off the bat I have to say that Defour definitely doesn't deserve some of the hate he gets. Go to class, take notes, you'll be fine. If you struggle with that, good luck with college. Will say that some test Qs are BS, but he scales heavily.
Professor Dufour is one of the best professors Ive had in Psych. He taught so many important things in his lectures that relate to all other psychology classes I have taken. In fact, I have never learned so much from any other Professor. One of the best! Do your work and you will do well.
I'm convinced that the good ratings are from robots. I've never heard of someone that has passed his class easily, if at all. I've seen people spend countless hours studying for his exams and failing miserably. If you want to learn a ton, but be criticized and completely unsupported while doing so, then this class is for you.
Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. He is very condensing to students, drags politics into lectures which are used in a derogatory way toward republicans, and his exams are extremely difficult and are set up for you to fail. Also expressed in his lecture his fear of dogs but "not small dogs because you can just kick those"
Tests are way too difficult. Doesn't understand the definition of extra credit. Responds quickly, but not helpful.
Never showed up to class, uses same notes from previous semesters. Find someone to take your clicker so he thinks you're there.
Interesting lectures but tough tests. If you read the book and review the notes, you'll do fine.
Dufour gets a lot of hate, but if you read the chapter and listen to lectures it'll be ok. He is condescending, but we're learning here...not worrying about our feelings. I would definitely take his class again because I learned so much.
Dufour is easily one of the best professors I've had. He genuinely cares about his students, though he may not show it often. He is actually hilarious and his lectures are always worth attending. The only downside to the course is that handwritten notes are not only encouraged, but required. He curves the exams pretty heavily. Make sure to study.
TAKE THE NIGHT CLASS. The day class is around 200 people. The nigh class is like 25. Charles is a very fair grader, everything is graded on a curve. He is very passionate and really gets into whatever he is teaching. If you pay attention and take notes in class, you will not need to study. He does not like computers youll have to take notes by hand
hes one of the better professors.
Exams are curved, just show up to class and take notes, plus read the textbook and you're basically guaranteed a pass. Will make jokes in class and has good examples for terms. If he writes it on the board, write it down 60-70% of it will be on your exams.
Terrible professor. I study so much and still fail. Good luck
Dufor is very lecture heavy. You will most likely find him annoying at first, but you get used to him and his lectures are actually fairly interesting and easy to follow.
I like Dufour, I think his lectures are very interesting and I've learned a lot. But, I think the biggest downfall of his course is the fact that his tests are long with so little time to complete. The questions are also difficult for no reason, I struggle even after I've spent so much time studying the way he tells us to study. Very discouraging.
Good Teacher, his lectures are a little long but they are usually entertaining and if you pay attention you will learn a lot. One thing that I would say is that he really gives you very little time to complete the tests. His reasoning is that if you know it you'll get it right and if you don't,you won't. This is annoying but overall a good teacher.
Dufour is a great professor, and I would give him a 5 out of 5 if it weren't for the online textbook readings. Lectures are required if you want to do well on your exams. Exams are heavily curved, and if you study just for a few hours before the exams, you should pass easily.
I know he's not the most popular professor, but I loved taking Dufour's class. Its all that you put in, if you don't go to class, and do extra reading you will fail, but maybe that's what I like about it. No group work which is a major plus for me. Thank you professor
Super easy class: take notes on the lectures, take notes on the chapter summaries, do the online surveys for Soma. The tests are scaled with enough time allotted, don't know why some people are saying there is not enough time. His classes are straightforward and lectures, entertaining.
Definitely in the top 5 for best professors of my college career thus far. Fantastic lectures with detailed explanation. Use of stories that complement the material. Exams were easy as long as you put in the time to study. None of the material was terribly difficult, there was just a lot of it. Only grades were exams, and studies outside of class.
Professor Dufour is my far one of the more difficult professors at UMaine, however despite the hard exams and complicated wording of his questions- I have learnt more from him than any other professor here. Incredibly smart man, only flaw is he is aware of how smart he is which can come off condescending, If you can get past that you'll love him.
Show up to lectures or you'll fail, I hardly touched the textbook and did fine. Tests are not that hard, just start studying a bit a week before, quizlet was good since its all multiple choice.
His lecture's aren't very dry and you can pay attention to them. However, his tests are 30 questions in 25 minutes so you better know what you are taking about.
The tests were fairly difficult, but the lectures were very good. He's interesting and keeps the students engaged very well. If you want to pass, go to lecture! Read the textbook too (or at least do the chapter quizzes, he bases a lot of test questions off of those).
There are only 4, non cumulative exams in this course. The textbook is $80 and you will need it for the exams. There will be questions from both lectures and the textbook. Everything is graded on a huge curve so its almost impossible to fail.
Good lectures; you have to read and review a lot for the only four exams that are your entire grade. I spend most of my time on this class.
If u missed the attendance questions he leaves open for 1 minute precisely you will get no pointsThis is hard when the wifi u have to use wont connect to your device he tells you it's not a HIM problem he loves to base test questions not off lecture only a few questions on tests are in lecture and most aren't discussed in textbook
You either love him or you hate him. Tests are kinda hard, like 80 questions mc, a lot of people barely passed. Here is how you pass: make a quizlet with EVERY term he talks about in class/textbook chapters, it will be like 300 terms per test, and study it religiously for like a week before the test and you will do amazing, learned so much honestly
Professor Dufour's lectures are engaging and informative, but the exams are quite challenging. Attending class and reviewing the textbook are essential. unstuckstudy can be a helpful study tool alongside other resources like Quizlet.
Initially you probably wont like him but after a week he's really funny and the lectures are actually really interesting and funny. Reading the textbook can really be a pain but you have to in order to get a good grade on exams. He grades on a pretty fat curve so if you study at least a little you should pass but def study hard if u want to get a A
Any class with him that's online is going to be incredibly hard. Outside of PSY 100 his tests get extremely tough and you will be expected to memorize everything weather it be lectures or textbook chapters. Even if you take detailed notes they won't help unless you are good at studying in advance.
Cool & funny guy, but way too pretentious to be a professor. Gives you "free" absences that dock points from your exam, REFUSES to teach you the material you missed or even give you the notes yet includes random, sometimes non-psych related questions on exams derived from lectures. Exams are confusingly worded. Doesn't offer feedback on your work.
Currently one week left in term, and he hasn't graded any essays in over two months (five ungraded essays). He comes across as rude in email. Gives no feedback on essay assignments. Requires camera and lockdown browser for exams. Weird deadlines. Interesting material, but Dufour stresses me out.
Dufour has very entertaining lectures and was my favorite prof all semester. There is a decent amount of reading, but it is all very interesting, and as long as you take notes on the reading + lectures and read over them at least once, you will get As on all the exams. Beware: I filled two notebooks in the class and he does not allow laptop notes.
The lectures were very entertaining, very test heavy class so study hard.
I loved this professor. He is awesome in every way, my only complain is that he's his tests are difficult if you don't read the textbooks and study a good amount. But even with the grading being difficult this is 100% worth taking the class. I learnt so much in this that I will use for the rest of my life and really enjoyed every lecture.
very lively lectures and his humor is funny and relatable to everyone. difficult thing was studying for the tests that were around 60 multiple choice due in 80 mins but there was only 4 and copy and pasted form the online text book
I took Psy 100 with him and loved it, and made sure to take Psy 230 with him. His lectures are super entertaining and he teaches in a way that makes difficult content easy to understand. As long as you take a lot of notes in class and read the textbook, you'll pass no problem. He's super funny!
DuFour is an absolutely amazing professor. All college professors should look for inspiration in him. I took two courses with him and enjoyed every class, and lecture. The tests were more than fair, and the HW was very fair. I love how he does not allow phones or laptops in class, paper notes are the best way for sure.
You can tell he's really passionate about psych. He goes through the lectures very fast, which wasn't a problem for me, but I can see how it would be. If you study enough and read the textbook, you should succeed. It's also very important to attend the lectures.
Though you will need to take good notes on lectures and read through the required text, this class was not too difficult, and the lectures themselves were both entertaining and informative. The professor is clearly extremely passionate about psychology and gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit as well on clear tips for success.
Would recommend
HORRIBLE. RUN WHILE YOU CAN.
Dr. Dufour is a really good professor for students who actually care about school. Study hard, and you will get a good grade. This class is all about putting actual effort in, which is not everyone's cup of tea (trust me, I get it). Warning: If you are a student who messes around all the time and doesn't pay attention (like myself) you're cooked.
One of the best lecturers at UMaine. His tests are difficult so expect to study if you want to pass. Lectures are mandatory if you skip you will fail the tests.
Dr. Dufour was by far my favorite lecturer. He is hilarious, incredibly entertaining. He's interactive at times, but don't anticipate a one on one relationship with him. Weekly quizzes, monthly exams... overall I loved his class.
Hands down the best teacher I have had in all my schooling. Super fun lectures, he is super enthusiastic about psychology, and his teaching style is fantastic. He tells a lot of funny stories as learning cues to help you remember lecture material. 10/10.
