he's like Jack from will and grace!
He doesnt appear very approachable. His tests are fairly difficult and require MUCH preparation. The questions are fairly random and it's someone hard to prepare for because the volume of material presented is very high. They require very specific answers
DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE. His test are intirely to hard and they are random questions from throughout the many chapters that are covered. He wants everything to be very detailed. He's not helpful and his lectures are boring and he covers things very quickly, so be prepared to write fast.
I don't suggest taking this class with this professor. He is very hard and not willing to help like many other professors. He likes to skip around while giving lectures making it difficult to take good notes.
Difficult Tests but fair, Be prepared to study. If you don't come to class you will fail. Tests from his notes only. You can tape record his lecture if it helps you as well. Not bad teacher but about 1/4 or more students will drop the class from not being prepared.
COME TO CLASS!!!!! STUDY!!! Know the material and things will be cool!!! Duggins is a pretty cool guy!!!
Tests: fill in blank, short answer, essay. Rigorous course, but if you are a biology major - it is necessary to know this stuff. I made an A by just taking notes and studying about 6 hours a test. Final not cumulative! Don't need the book.
Duggins is one of the best professors I've ever had. He knows his stuff and will answer any questions you have. He doesn't mind repeating stuff in class. Most people that don't like him aren't willing to put the time into studying. You must study or you will fail!
NEVER EVER TAKE THIS CLASS. he is very uncaring about his students or what they think tests are very hard and despite what some people say just coming to class will not help.
too hard wont let u out early.
This class is hard. I suggest you never miss a class, pay attention, buy the Campbell 101 book and study guide (these are very helpful), and study at least a week in advance.
If at all possible do not take him!!
he looks like a combination between ducky from land before time and jack from will and grace. go to class memorize what he says and youll be straight sleep or dont go and youll fail. i did the latter of the 2.
Duggins is a hard professor, but one of the best at USC. To make an A in his class you have to go to class, take excellent notes, study your ass off and truly understand the material. If you are a dedicated college student he is an amazing wealth of knowledge!
He needs to realize that not everyone learns as fast as some the students with the better grades in the class. He also gives off the impression that he doesn't want to answer any questions that students ask about material. If USC did listen to its student evaluations this man wouldn't be here.
dr. duggins is awesome! you just need to make sure to take detailed notes and memorize EVERYTHING. whatever you do, just dont miss class.
Dr. Duggins is not someone you want to take unless you know everything about biology. One thing is clear, you will not get an A unless, well nevermind it is impossible.
Such a hard professor. Don't take unless he is the only one. Study your butt off and memorize EVERYTHING!!
The class is very hard. But you have to come to every class to pass. You really have to study your butt off and take very detailed notes. Definitely use his office hours because he is very helpful.
Welcome to a real college class. This guy knows how to be a good professor, and it takes someone actually caring to learn to do well in his class. Thank you Dr. Duggins!!!!! Best professor at USC, highly recommend for more than just one class.
GOOD professor. The test is 100% from class. just take notes on what he says in class and remember what he says- it's hard if you dont plan on putting full effort into it, but if you plan on learning everything he teaches and make the effort to do it, you'll do well. There's no surprises.
Awesome teacher with clear organized lectures. Pay attention and take good notes and you should do just fine. The tests are really hard but if you study and memorize exactly what the notes say you will do just fine. I learned a great deal in his class and would recommend him to any biology major!
He is the worst professor I have ever had and I highly advise not taking this man. He is a danger to your college career. This man is the devil himself only with a feminine disposition.
Keyword: NOTES the test is notes not the book. Study the notes and write down what he says. Tests are not easy but it is in all in the notes
Make sure you attend every class and take good notes. The tests come from the notes. He welcomes questions during and after class and is very available to help you. Interesting class.
Hard class, must take notes and keep up with him in lecture. Cannot BS your way through this one...have to study NOTES and be willing to learn A WHOLE LOT of new material. Tests can be a pain...give as much info as you can so as not to leave room for point deduction. What to expect in college Prof.
awful!
Unless you want to go to med school, avoid any Duggins classes at all costs. Even if you do want to go to med school, if you don't want to risk a C, don't take any of his classes. Very thorough and clear, but VERY hard. Tape Record everything he says and listen to it 3-4 times, with notes and book.
Excellent professor but jumps around sometimes. Use the cd from the book, study the notes, and pay attention in lab and lecture and you will get an A. Do not miss class or you will be completely lost. Bring a tape recorder if you don't write notes quickly because he moves fast
GOOD professor! Tests are VERY straight forward. However, there is NO mutiple choice- all essay/fill in the blank/diagram. But nothing is tricky or confusing about it- you either know it or you don't, and he covers EVERYTHING in his lectures for the exams.
This professor is the worst ever!!! His tests are based on the smallest details he can find. You can study for days for his tests and still fail. His lectures are so boring and you have to take notes while he talks. He doesn't give you time to catch up so you miss alot!
tests are straight from lecture, so just write down everything he says and memorize and it'll be "easy." it's a ton of work but you'll learn a lot...
He moves very fast you can study for the test for days and still fail!!! The test are stickly from the notes so don't miss class.
very straightforward, 4-6 pages of notes every class, tests are based completly off lecture, tests are also damn near impossible to make an A. you will go in and leave thinking you killed the test, and a week later when you get your test back you got a 57. you leave with a massive amt. of knowledge
I HATED THIS CLASS! He is a very hard teacher and he doesnt help much at all. He expects everyone to know what he is talking about and gives out about 10 pages worth of notes EACH class AND HIS TEST ARE HARDDDDD!!!
this man is the devil.... extremely hard
He really knows his stuff. You can't just study for a few hours and get by in his class. It is the hardest class I have had yet at Carolina. He is very nice, his test are just close to impossible.
HARD. so much notes for such a not very long test. not a lot of multiple choice. he likes fill in the blank and essay questions. take good notes and study everyday.
I had this prof for Bio 102 also....you HAVE to go to class...write down EVERYTHING he says....and then MEMORIZE it all....I got an A in both classes by doing this...this is the only way to go. My roommate and I would study a page of notes and then ask each other until we memorized it all.
duggins is the devil...he will tell you every lecture to study one thing cause it will be the essay question on the test, and then the test comes and it isn't on the test...the tests are impossible even if you think you know everything you don't..
I had duggins for 101 and 102, He knows the material very well but isn't clear when teachin it, then his tests are very random because u learn so much material for an exam that is often less than 25 questions, if u decided to take him ace the first and third tests because those are the easiest.
OMFG he sooo sucks!! lecture is so EASY but the test have nothing to do with what is in the notes. What is up with the bio 101 teachers, they all suck major ass
He was the best teacher Ive had so far at USC.... The material is challenging and you need to study days in advance for his tests but they are VERY straight forward. I aced both of them... Dont bother reading the book though, because no material comes from it. I would definitely recommend him. He is passionate about fungi and plants though...
I had him for 102 and 101. He is very hard but knows his stuff. You will have to study A LOT, but if you take good notes and pay attention, it is possible. He is very willing to help and all you have to do is ask. Dont be afaid to ask for him!!!!! Take him if you want to know bio.
There is a lot of material to know, so the only way to do well on the exams is to memorize all your notes. Try and bring a taperecorder, or otherwise u may miss something important. As long as you study about a week before the exam, you will do well.
i had him and failed his class. his tests are EXTREMELY hard and no matter how hard or long you study... it will still seem like you are not prepared...i wouldnt recomend him to anyone
he was an excellent teacher.I learned a lot in his class.he was also very understanding when a friend died and i had to miss the final. would recommed if you want to learn a lot, but he wont hand feed you the grade... you have to study.
he is so harsh, his tests especially are a ****!!!
he was awful
Genetics was absolutely the best biology class I took at USC. Material is well taught in a logical fashion which makes it easier learn. Not only was the information re: genetics useful down the road in med school, it also reinforced knowledge of cell biology, biochemistry. Lessons are presented in a way which lends itself to teach students methods and logic of scientific inquiry. Questions were always encouraged and addressed. Information is up-to-date. Grading is very fair and reasonable.
You have to study and memorize....everything. He does not give extra credit, so if you are failing, try to catch up. He will not hesitate to gove you a D.

Arg! Wish this professor had been avoidable. Tests not a good representation of one's knowledge. Crams so much info into each class that one is too overwhelmed to truly appreciate and learn what he/she is short-term memorizing for the exams. Not engaging. Must take notes of all that he says. Looks like an elf, the only entertaining aspect.
same teaching methods in all classes. you can either do it or you can't. not much in between. great b/c don't need book. encourages questions and office hours. hard but really inspires to learn.
He is very knowledgable about what he is teaching. He is very clear about what will be on the tests and what the essays will. There is a lot of material covered so it is necessary to start studying a week or two before the exam. I would recommend him to any students who are interested in medical school.
i really liked dr. duggins! all the tests are fill-in and rather specific, but it is very possible to do well on them if you study some. he will totally work with you on make-up tests, etc. and is nice and helpful even if he doesn't seem that way to some.
To be exremely honest, this class was a very difficult class.HE is a tought teacher. If you are going to take this class, I recommend that you take easy classes that particular semester so you can focus all of you attn on him. He grades really tough so come prepared and know everything on test days. Avoid this class if possible. His attitude stinks
UGH i hate this guy with every fiber of my being. if you dont memorize every photoplasmic micron blah blah detail from class you will do horrible on his fill in the blank/description tests. i had to change my major because of his class. everytime i see him i just want to knock his little three foot body off the earth. ughhhh DONT TAKE CHUCK DUGGINS
Don't listen to the dumbasses who think he is a good professor..blah blah blah...If you are good at memorizing biology terms and honestly good at this subject, then u could take him. BUT, if ure like me, an avg student-then RUN. Don't take him, it will ruin ure GPA big time...wait till someone else teaches this course...Helmuth is good...
Dont take this class! It will ruin your life! You have to memorise EVERY word that comes out of his ugly face. It was the hardest class I have ever taken. It ruined my GPA and made me change my major. I got a 17% on the final and I studied for weeks! Dont put yourself through the stress and agony! Duggins finds glory in watching his students fail!
He is very interesting (one of the most knowlegable teachers) but tests are very difficult take good notes and study like crazy before the test and you will come out with a respectable grade.
DONT TAKE DUGGINS!!! Biology in general is already a tough subject and Duggins goes out of his way to make your life hell. His notes are all over the place, and he would rather cram a BUNCH of info in rather than have you understand. Even if you study for a week in advance he will put things on the test that HARDLY reflect the notes
If u enjoy biology, you should take his class. He is a wonderful teacher, and explains things very well. Yes u have to take an incredible amount of notes, and you have to study alot for the exam, but thats what biology majors do. Its an great class and glad i took it. You can't simple study the day before his exams and expect to ace the class.
this class was rediculous. i already took the AP version of 101 and 102 in high school and decided to take it again at the college level to refresh my memory. i got A's in all of my other classes and a 41% in Duggins's class. It completely ruined my would-be 4.0 and almost made me lose my scholarships- its not hard, its impossible. im not stupid
He's not impossible guys...you're supposed to study. You're in college now. And if you have an interest in biology he's a wonderful teacher. I made all A's on every one of his tests. It's not that hard. Just study the notes. You don't even need to read the book.
While some say that all you have to do is take notes and study like crazy. Memorizing is not learning. If possible, try another professor that actually engages his/her students and attempts to make sure students understand the material. Try Helmuth, even though his tests are also kinda tricky, he presents the material better.
This was absolutely the worst class that i have taken. Feel like i learned absolutely nothin from him. His tests do not focus on what he suggests that they will and his notes are very unorganized. Tries to cram too much into one class and into one test. Overall- I hated this class, take someone else
STAY AWAY!! Duggins is awful. This is the hardest class that I've taken. If you love your GPA avoid him. He rambles on for the entire hour and his tests are hard. For on test he stressed a topic for weeks and assured us that it would be the essay topic, when we got the test the topic was completely different. He doesn't care if you know it or not.
HARDEST professor EVER...I think my health is fading because of this class. His test are hard and it's impossible to pass in his class. AVOID.
Biology 101 with Dr. Duggins is difficult if you don't study ahead of time. Going to class is a must. If you study before the night before a test you'll be fine in his class. Very willing to help if approached. Flashcards very helpful.
Duggins is a wonderful professor. The tests are straight from the notes- do not buy the book. Flashcards work, and I heard the SI sessions help. He is always willing to clarify any questions, and he is a really nice guy. I studied the night before every exam and made an A.
Helmuth's tests are WAY easier than his. He makes you write every single thing. No multiple choice or true/false. If you can avoid DO SO!
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR...AVOID...He is very unclear, his test make no sense whatsoever. You can be the best biologist in the world and they wouldn't have a clue with this guy. Prepare to get an F..A D+ if you're smart
this **** is terrible. he can not teach at all. you will fail with honors if you take him.
Ok professor. I would avoid if i could because there are better. The tests were kind of unclear, but if you study for a little while you can pass the exams, but I wouldn't count on getting an A
Do not take Duggins if at all possible! I was advised not to, but I had no choice. I ended up making a D, and had to take it over again. Stupid midget doesn't even care about your grade! DO NOT TAKE DUGGINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Took Duggins 2 yrs ago (Fall 03)...worst prof I've ever had. Nice enough, but no matter how much I wrote on tests, he gave a C. Example: Had to explain Glycolosis, and memorized every protein (not necessary), and every single relevant aspect. Left out the hardly relevant hydrogens left over (all else correct), and got 5/12 points. ****.
Worst teacher at USC. He doesn't care about teaching at all. Tests are horrible and unfair. Do not take this class.
This is the worst professor EVER!!! His tests are hard and WAY to specific. His class can really kill your GPA! You now have a fair warning to STAY AWAY!
Beware of this professor! This was by far the most difficult class I have had yet! None of the tests are multiple choice, they are fill in the blank/description/essay exams. You have perfectly specific in order to get credit for your answers. You have to study nearly 20 pages of notes for each test when only 20 questions are on the tests. HORRIBLE!
dont listen to these people. duggins is a really nice guy and he's willing to help you. the only thing is you have to study, and people are too lasy to do it. i studied a lot and ended up with an A. Take him!! he's a good teacher!
Most difficult teacher I've ever had. I thought he was terrible at explaining things during his lectures. He's a pretty bad professor. You really have to put in a ton of work to get by.
I took him for Summer School. 3 exams and a Final (cumulative with new material). Tests are all Short Answer/Fill in the Blank/Essay. I did fine on everything, but Fill in the Blank. If not for FIB, I would have a B+ (i'm currently struggling just for a C). He's unhelpful and will just tell you to "study harder". Avoid if you can (I couldn't).
Duggins gives lots of notes. Just memorize everything and you should be fine. Not a bad teacher, but most people don't want to memorize all the notes he gives you. Just suck it up and study everything and you should have an "a" or "B" in the end.
The first time i took Duggins he seemed cold-hearted and could care less about how you did in his class. I had to take him again this time during the summer and truthfully i saw a totally different person, he was very very helpful. I suggest taking him in the summer time because he seems more helpful and there is a lot more one on one, you can tell
This teacher is the worst ever.....I couldnt stand him...I had him for second semester and he gave me bad thoughts....
do not lissend to these people! i was doing poorly in duggins class and went and talked with him. he helpd a lot and even though i made d's and c's on his test i ended up with an A! take if you can
Dr. Duggins is great! He gives lots of notes and free response exams, but if you study you will do fine! I really like his teaching style- physiology is a hard class anyway and he makes it interesting and understandable. The lab is fun too!- I recommend it!
Dr.Duggins is tough. However, he is a great teacher and he teaches the material in an easy to understand way. He is very straight forward. You are going to have to study, but you'll learn a lot and do well if you do. Also, the lab was a lot of fun.
Dr. Duggins is an awesome teacher. There are no surprises on the tests. If you go to class and take good notes you are fine. You can get an A on the tests if you study a few days before the tests (basically memorize the notes). His class is interesting and worth taking.
This guy is extremely hard!!! you have to memorize EVERYTHING from the notes and only 25% of the material is on the test!!! He does not review or go over anything before the test so you don't know whats gonna be on there! and he is not helpful outside of class!!! I would NOT take him!!!! If you do be prepared to work very very hard!!!
Stay away from this one. His notes are all over the place and he tries to cram too much information in class periods and tests. He'll tell you to prepare for one type of question on tests, but will give you another. He's a smart man but the bad thing is that he knows that. He wants you to know that he's smarter than you.
His physiology class was the most difficult class I have ever taken in my life. I recommend everyone to avoid it. I'm an honors student with a 3.8 GPA, I'm going to medical school, and I'm a hard worker. I got my first C in my life in this class. I went to class everyday and studied all the time. You WILL regret taking this course.
BE WARNED~ He is the make or break guy. He has tenure, so he'll do what he feels is "correct". He does curve at the end but it may be like 1 or 2 points or none at all. On one of his exams he always gives you trick question where the answer is nothing.
Charles Duggins is perhaps the smartest professor i have had so far. He knew the material he taught and gave that material to the students in an clear and easy to understand manner. Yes there is ALOT of material covered but what other biology class doesnt have alot of material. You have to come to class take good notes and learn the notes 4 an A
No Comments
His tests are EXTREMELY hard - short answers and essays. If you misspell a word, 1/2 of the points are taken off. I've always been a really good student, especially in Biology, but this course gave me the most trouble!
He is very smart and knows the content of his lectures very well. While I thoroughly enjoyed the class, missing one day is like missing a week because so much material is covered. However, taking good notes and paying attention in class will pay off. Also, he follows the book so reading the book is VERY helpful. A tough class but very interesting.
Makes things more difficult than they should be.exams are difficult.grades really hard. watch out!
Very straight forward professor. Some think he is hard, but all the exams come straight from lecture notes. Test are fill in the blank and essay. Don't worry about reading the book, study the notes and you will be fine. (Try not to get Banister as your TA)
Go to class and write down everything he says. Duggins is not that bad. He only taught for half the semester. Memorize everything! If you know the material you will be fine.
very picky.. write down EVERYTHING the lab is fun!! avoid if you dont like to study!
he makes biology a lot harder than it is if you read the book, and his tests are extremely picky....just go to class
I liked Duggins. His tests are all short answer, essay, fill in blank but during class he gives lots of hints of the material that will most likely be on the exam. just take detailed notes and study them..the test only comes from that material.I liked him as a prof. and learned a lot.
Had him for Summer I. Gives a lot of notes, but you do not need to read the book. Tests were pretty hard and he graded on a lot of details. Bring a tape recorder if you cannot write fast.
This man is so picky. His tests were all short answer, fill in the blank, and true/false. However, he does teach the material thoroughly. He knows his stuff. He just makes everything 239239 times more difficult than it should be and even takes off for SPELLING! Take him if you are willing to study alot and you like that style of test taking.
Never liked going to this class. Its pretty boring.
His tests are not that hard if you study. He teaches biology for majors and he does his job well. He is trying to weed out all of the "pre-med" people. If you can't handle this class, you need to change majors. I went to office for an interview I had to do for another class and he was pretty cool. His tests come right from the notes...no book.
Duggins is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. There is a lot of studying involved. He gets very in depth in the topic and teaches it very well in my opinion. Just study very hard and, even though you dont even need it, reading the book helps. Know your vocab.
I found his class actually pretty interesting but its SO hard. i studied for about if not over 15 hours for every test. the material comes straight from the notes but you LITERALLY MUST know your notes forward and backward to do well in his class. i wouldnt reccomend him but its not the end of the world if you get him just know its going to be hard
You have to read over your notes and study! getting a recorder will definately help you. He is a hard teacher so you have to work in this class and if you go to his office it may seem like he's pushing you away but he is very helpful!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. he is hard for no reason almost 50% of his classes fail each semester. His test are hard and his essay questions and study things for the test are never on the test you are expected to basically know six chapters of notes and be able to spit all of it on gthe test. He grades very hard and takes off for everything.
In my opinion, Dr. Duggins is an excellent professor. While his exams are difficult, you know exactly what is going to be on it cuz all of it is straight from your notes. If you are good at memorizing notes then this is the class for you. You must attend lecture!! I would recommend him if you are a bio major. Im taking him again for 102!
I learned alot but i studied my behind off!!. I don't know how people with 14 credit ours do well in his class because i got an A but he was the only class i took that semester. He's not that bad durring his office ours b/c if you missed something in class he'll repeat and explain it durring is office ours. A RECORDER was very very helful.
He is not too terrible, but he just expects you to do learn it yourself.
Duggins is a great professor! Take him, you will learn so much esp if you are a biology major He is the clearest lecturer you will ever take. Dont have to use the book AT ALL. All his test come DIRECTLY from the notes and if you memorize the notes, you will get a 105 on every test! YES there is extra credit on each test. TAKE DUGGINS! Its a ch
I honestly enjoyed taking Dr. Duggins class! At first, I was intimitated because I heard all these rumors how hard he was. But if you literally write down and memorize every word he says, the tests are a VERY easy..in fact on the first test i got a 101! Take Dr. Duggins if you are willing to work hard because your hard work will pay off
He is an extremely hard professor. He expects you to know EVERY SINGLE DETAIL from the notes. Hopefully you like that in a teacher if you take him. (make sure you know how to spell everything correctly and, well, every single word you right down during his class)
doesnt really make sense but if you go to class and take notes his tests are pretty straight forward
You must attend class if you plan on getting a decent grade in this course.
AWFUL teacher. He knows the info but tries to trick you. He does NOT wish you do your best. To do well, you must take a tape recorder, take notes, rewrite notes that day then do it again for the test. I LOVED biology but made a C on the 1st test and F on the 2nd. DO NOT take him! I learned more when we switched to the 2nd professor but no w/ him.
Everyone talks crap about Duggins but the truth is that he's insanely smart and has high expectations from his students. Don't take physiology from anyone else if you are hoping to go to med school because this man will TEACH it to you. Make notecards and read the book and you will do fine. Dr. Duggins is a wonderful teacher who knows his sh*t
Professor Duggins is not a difficult professor! If you cannot make an A in this class then you shouldnt be thinking about med school (or any other professional school for that matter). Though his test can be somewhat detailed, they come directly from the lectures, nothing else. He covers everything you need to know about bio 102.
He is monotone...his tests are not hard if you take EXTREMELY good notes and you MEMORIZE every single word out of it! you earn the grade you get!
Everyone talked bad about Duggins but I was glad to have him. You do really have to study and learn the material but that's what we are here for right? Make notecards, attend class, read, and pay attention. Once you move on to higher level biology classes you will be glad you had a professor that actually made you learn the material.
If you have a good work ethic and can dedicate time to study you will do fine.
The second test was super hard, but if I would have studied more effectively I would have been fine. His notes are almost always out of order, so I ended up rewriting them a lot.
Dr. Duggin's class is hard, but if you like biology you will love his class. He teaches you a lot of useful information. YES his test are extremely difficult, but I learned by far more in his class than my other classes combined.
He is a great teacher! He is really hard, but he prepares you very well. He gives you all the things you need to know on the test and he even tells you the format. Also, he includes possible essays for you to study with. He is a wonderful teacher and he's great if you study!
Had him for BIOL101 and opted to take him again for 102 because I learned so much from his class. If you are very interested in the subject, I would recommend him. His class is meant to weed out students who are not cut out for a career in science, so STUDY! That's what you're in college for.
Dr. Duggins grades very hard and in his lectures he talks a mile a minute, pay attention, study hard and take it seriously and you'll be fine, i took him for bio 101 and i plan to take him again for 102 because i feel like i know the subject so thorougly, i made a B in the class, but take it seriously from the beginning and you can make an A
duggins is a really good teacher if you choose to actually put forth the effort for his class. you have to go to class even tough he doesnt take attendance because tests are straight from his lectures. you have to study very hard but it is possible to make an A. there are 3 exams and the final.
AWEFUL!!!! so hard its not even funny! likes to go off and bunny trail that turn out to be on the test even though the material has not been fully cover! so hard!!!! DONT TAKE HIM!!! spent all of my time studying for his class that i ignored my other classes!!
yes, his class is extremely difficult.. but if you study, go to class, and take good notes you should be fine. the SI sessions help explain a lot. his tests are very hard and they really test your knowledge. everything is straight from the lecture. bottom line: if you actually attempt to get a good grade you should be fine. you can't slack.
Horrible! I studied at least twelve hours for each test just so I could make a C on them. He rambles in his lectures and expects you to know every minute detail for his three page essay tests. Don't take him if you have the choice. Be prepared to bury your nose in the books for this class. He's the reason i changed my major...
He's really detailed and you never know what might be on the test. It will all come from his lecture but some of the most important stuff you will need to know he'll say in passing and it will seem unimportant. If you are going to skip class, you might as well go ahead and change sections.
His Basic Biology classes are there to weed out the individuals who don't really enjoy biology and that are not going to commit to it anyway. If you those classs are hard, change your major because Biol 415 is even harder. For those who enjoy Biology, like those who make it to 415, just study what he lectures on.
he is terrible, he shows no care for the student and the test are so random that they are impossible to prepare for do not take him if you have a choice
I worked my butt off in this class and it was well worth it. He is a great professor to take if you are a science major or if you're planning to go to professional school. I recorded his lectures and recopied my notes and made an A. His exams are tough, but if you go to class, write everything he says down and study you'll do fine!
It's hard. However, he is a good teacher and knows what he is talking about. You need to take excellent notes because his tests come straight from them. The tests are hard, but not impossible. He is willing to help and is great with responding to e-mails!
his class is ridiculous! if you are an average student he will mess your gpa up! you have to study every little detail and I mean EVERY detail in order to get a decent grade. Tests are 30 fill in the blank w/o a key, five random definitions you will have to define, and probably some diagrams you will have to draw in short answer. AVOID HIM!!!!!!!!!
He is HORRIBLE! Do not take him. He is not clear about the subject and he jumps from subject to subject so it is really hard to keep up! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Dr. Duggins is one of the smartest, most articulate biology professors you will find at USC. His class is never easy, but if you are a pre-med and seriously want to learn this stuff, Dr. D is your man. If you are taking it just for fun, then he may be too hard for you. The course load is intense, but totally doable. I definitely recommend him!!!
Don't expect to make an A in his class. Do expect to learn more than you will in all of your other classes combined. I have never had a professor teach to the level of detail that he does. He's a very intelligent man, but unlike most professors, he's fine with saying he doesn't know the answer to a question. He's also very helpful when approached.
I took Duggins for 101 and 102, and made an A in both classes. He isnt an easy teacher, but he will make you learn the information, so he is great to take if you are pre-med. If you attend and record every class (the tests are strictly lecture) and attend SI Sessions, you can make an A. You won't even open the book, so don't worry about buying it.
He is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. I was terrified going into the class from what I read here, but if you really want to make an A, it is very possible. He really makes you learn the material which is why i liked him so much. You HAVE to go to class and take extremely detailed notes. Tests are challenging and open-ended.
Professor Duggins is a tough professor that expects a lot from his students. Attendance is not mandatory, but in order to do well go to class and take detailed notes. He is very helpful and is glad to explain material again. I highly recommend this professor if you are going to graduate school. I made an A in his class, and learned a lot.
He is the most ridiculous professor, it is 102 not 502. he is the worst professor I have ever had. I will avoid him like the plague.
Professor Duggins' teaching style is definitely lecture, lecture, lecture. you only need to use the book if you are having trouble with something. RECORD your lectures and listen to them. Take detailed notes too. if you are someone who pays close attention to detail, you'll have NO problem at all!! He's so smart, you can learn SO much!!
His tests are impossible and you have to study every single thing he says in class. You also have to go to EVERY single class or you will miss something small that he said that WILL be on the test. I don't reccommend him at all. He is VERY difficult.
Duggins is a nice man who knows what he teaches, but his test are unbelievable hare. they are ridiculous. avoid him if possible.
Knows a lot about what he is talking about, but teaches at a very high level that becomes stressful to keep up with when you have other difficult classes. not impossible but very difficult
Dr. Duggins is a GREAT teacher. He is very knowledgeable about the subject which makes it more interesting to learn. Take detailed notes. Write down everything he says. He allows you to use a tape recorder which is helpful when you miss something that's important. 3 tests and 1 final. His tests are pretty hard but it's basically just memorization.
DO NOT TAKE DUGGINS! THIS CLASS IS IMPOSSIBLE. YOU MUST GO TO CLASS AND WRITE EVERY WORD HE SAYS. SI SESSIONS ARE A MUST! GRADE IS 3 TESTS AND FINAL. RIDICULOUSLY HARD. YOU CANNOT MISS ONE CLASS AND EXTREMELY EASY TO GET LOST IN!
Bottom line.. Duggins is ridiculously hard. His tests come directly from the lecture notes, but you must know EVERY single thing he says about a topic. He also will take a lot of info from his last lecture before a test and throw it on there.. very hard grader.. avoid if you can! unless you LOVEEE plants!
Dr. D is only hard because he requires you to know so much information. If you are really good at memorizing and taking excellent notes you'll be fine. You MUST study at least a week prior to your exam in order to get an A (unless you are a genius at Bio). His tests in my opinion are easy bc he gives a lot of room for partial credit. SI helps alot
sighh..yea he is really hard. If you are a hard worker then he is your type of prof. He will make you work for your grade. Didn't enjoy his class at all and its really difficult.
Dr. D is the MAN!!
Great professor. Yes, the tests are hard but if you really study from the book (which is great), you will do fine. If you are lazy and do not care about biology and do not need the class, take someone else. If you truly want to learn the content and use it in the future, take Duggins. He WILL prepare you well. Easy if you have prior knowledge.
You have to go to class. The tests are straight from the lectures! Go to SI its really helpful and is a great review for the test. The tests emphasize the last two or three chapters he goes over. The first two are not that significant.
Horrible! had to drop the class after the first test. Studied for that test for hours and hours and still failed! This man is impossible to please! Do not take him!
He is a fantastic teacher. His class is definitely hard and requires a lot of studying but it is definitely not impossible. He does hit you with a lot of material so if you don't want to come to class and want an easy grade, then do not take him. His class is hard but he knows so much information so he will prepare you if you are interested in Bio.
I have read many of the posts on here and the thing that stands out is that the most literate people say Duggins is a good teacher. Is he hard? Yes. Will you have to study? Yes. People don't seem to understand that the point of college is to learn. If your reason for taking a biology class is to learn biology I highly recommend him. I also know multiple people with test averages above 95 so it's certainly possible to make an A.
He means well, but be cautious if you have a shaky background in bio. There is a lot of content and you will not have time to fill in any "gaps" in your prior knowledge, plus you will not absorb anything from lecture if you do not have some background in HS biology. (I have a GED.) If you are NOT a bio major, take someone else.
You have to work extremely hard to get the grade you want, an A is acheivable if you study a significant amount. Stay ontop of the material, GO TO SI, and study at least a week in advance for tests.
Don't bother buying the textbook, class lectures are what the tests are based off of. Attend the classes and take notes word for word. I would suggest attending SI sessions as well. I finished with an A in the class, he's very straightforward. Bio majors: take him.
Just go to class and write down everything he says. His tests consist of 1-8 short answer, 17-20 fill in the blank definitions, and 3-5 essay questions that are usually diagrams.
Duggins is a good teacher but you HAVE to go to class and write down everything he says. The test is straight for the notes he gives you. The book isn't necessary but SI sessions are good. You need to study about 10 hours for each test if you want to do well.
Teaches it all to you, but the test must state everything ever taught about a given subject. You must be on your game. Fair but Challenging.
Prof. Duggins was an amazing professor. I believe the class is definitely worth taking. Not only do you learn a lot, but you retain information. I went into the class thinking I was doomed because of the comments I read here but I was pleasantly surprised and made an A. Make sure you take detailed notes and study them well and you'll be fine.
I took Duggins freshman year for 101 and recieved a "C". The stress, anxiety, and tears his exams gave me were WORTH IT. Although I didn't perform well on his exams, I honestly learned and retained a lot! I'm taking him for 460 right now and am quite confident I'll make an "A" this time around! :)
Dr. Duggins has been my favorite teacher at USC. He made me learn more then I thought was possible. His exams are written and fill in the blank and a lot of students think this is "hard" but it only means you have to KNOW the material he teaches! I got to know him and he has written me a letter of recommendation for med school!
He definitely makes you know your stuff. He's an alright guy though. Record the lectures and go over them and fill your notes in. I got an A, and it wasn't tough. Just a bit time consuming. Explains things very thoroughly.
Extremely hard and you must go to class everyday. If you are not a biology major get out asap cause he lectures like everyone is majoring in biology. I studied for over 16 hours for test and failed and i never missed a class. Get out now!!! These people who say he is easy are nerds and study 10 hours a day.
Duggins is a very thorough if boring lecturer. Essentially, you have to memorize every word he says, and reproduce them on the test. His tests are surprisingly hard. They click with some people and other people have to study harder than they ever have.
The most difficult part about Duggins is how he tests. They are fill in the blank, essay, and definition. If you leave the word, "the" out, he will take off points. Memorize every word he says, the way he says it.
Great professor. He gets a lot of grief though from students because his tests are really difficult but it IS possible to get an A. Just record his lectures on a recorder, go back and fill in your notes what you missed. On tests he wants what he SAID in class, not what is says in the book.
I enjoyed Dr. Duggin's class. He's a tough professor especially if you're used to multiple choice tests. I had to attend every lecture, but I wouldn't start studying for his tests til the night before, and I still made A's. Good luck!
Please do not let the "difficult but great teacher" comments fool you. Duggins is only thought of as a great professor because his exams are so incredibly difficult that you MUST listen to EVERY word he says. Knows his material, but that does not make for a great professor. Passion, the desire to change lives, and care for the student does.
Very hard professor! It's hard to write down everything he says. He talks too fast. The tests are impossible to pass also. I remember writing an answer on a test, word for word what I had in notes and he marked it wrong. I do not recommend.
Dr. Duggins is a great professor. He is so knowledgeable and definitely prepares you for the MCAT or other entrance test better than any other teacher i've had. the class isn't easy, you have to work hard but if you record the lectures you'll do fine.
Everyone freaked out about this man. He knows his stuff I made A's on all of the test. If you know Biology he is a breeze and go to all of your SI and you will be fine. I am taking him for 102. Loved him! He is not clear though when you need help and his test are Short Answer and fill in. Just know ur stuff and you will do good.
Not as bad as the reviews made him sound. His class is definitely possible to make a good grade in but you have to make sure you are familiar with the material. Study hard, know the notes back and forth, and go to the SI sessions. Sessions help alot. Ill be taking him for 102 so he is not as terrible as everyone made him seem.
Just not good, he is not a bad guy, but his philosophy is a bit ridiculous. He is fairly heartless and loves counting off for things he didnt say in class. Takes bio as being a weed out class too far. He knows his stuff but I have put a ton into his class and I cant seem to get the grade that reflects it. Consider your options for teachers.
Honestly, he isnt as bad as everyone says. Yeah, his tests are hard but if you study what he say in class, you will be perfectly fine. I hate biology and still managed an A in the class because I studied. He is fair and if you think you shouldnt get points off, he will look over it with you. I never went to SI and still did fine.
His tests were ridiculously hard! Studied more for his tests than I ever have and can't make a decent grade. He wants you to write what he says in class verbatim, so bring a recorder. The book is useless, so save your money. Find someone else if you can.
Memorize what he says, not just what the book tells you. Likes to test on details and essays include drawings and explanations. Not the best teacher, especially when he confuses himself. Get a better professor if you want a better grade.
Take this class only if you are feeling very brave! He definitely knows his stuff and expects you to know everything that he does. Tests are very hard but if you stick with it, you will genuinely learn biology.
Duggins is a great professor! He definitely makes you learn the material and is NO breeze by any stretch but I learned more from him than any other professor I've had. Go to class, pay attention, and take down notes! I made an A but I EARNED it! He will make you work!
When I first went into this class I was terrified because of the reviews I saw here. He really isn't that bad though. I had mostly A's on my tests except for one. I ended up not only with an A in the class but also ended up gaining a lot of knowledge about biology. Just go to lectures, use the book to understand main concepts and study.
Definitely do not take him. I know many people that have had to retake bio 101 because of how hard is exams are. I studied 10+ hours and still made only a 60. He doesn't not use the bio package at all so don't worry buying it. Attendance is not mandatory.
This guy was boring and impossible.
Duggins definitely has a bad reputation but I think he's a great professor. The tests come straight from the lectures and do not require any application of the notes, just memorization. It's important to take good notes--he moves very quick so I suggest buying a tape recorder. Tests have fill in the blank, short response, and drawing of diagrams.
I had Duggins for 101 and 102 and I thought he was a fantastic teacher. If you are a biology major he is the best teacher. Yes, his exams are hard but they make you know the material. It is definitely not a class to take if you just want to get by. I would recommend duggins to anyone who is serious about biology and he did a great job teaching!
Probably the best lecturer and the most I have learned in a class so far at USC. He is clear enough in his teaching that if you simply take the time to memorize your notes, there is no reason you can't make A's on all the tests.
Truly one of my FAVORITE professors. people always talk crap about his teaching style, but if you want to go to medical school, pharmacy school or any graduate program this is a great course to take to really learn biology. It does take a lot of work, but if I can get an A, anyone can. Buy a recorder listen to it after class and type out the notes
You only get 3 exams. No make ups unless you miss the exam. His notes are not clear at all. You really have to keep up with him when it comes to the class. The exams are very detailed. The exams are either short answered, fill in the blank or essay. Pick another teacher if possible. I have to take this section over, and I am really good at biology,
avoid if possible. there are only 3 exams and a final and they are all worth the same. his exams are hard. he wants you to know exactly what he says for the exam. basically you listen and write down the answers verbatum or you dont get full points.
Duggins is awful, do not take him. tests are short response and he does not help you at all! he expects you to write every word he says, he only tests on about 20% of what he talks about but makes you think you need to study everything. go to SI sessions!
This class was impossible. Test questions are those that you would never think would be on the test. If you think you have a shot of recovering by Helmuth's mutiple choice tests from the 2nd portion, think again. Took AP bio in high school & made an A in biology 101 but still managed to make a D. Have to retake this course. Don't take it with him!
Dr.Duggins is a wonderful professor. He expects a lot from his class but gives you all lot of information that you need for your test. This is definitely a hard class but you end up learning so much. The lab is a class within itself so it is extremely time consuming but passing with a B or A for the class is possibly if you actually try.
Physiology = lots of information to memorize, and that's all there is to it. He's fair and tells you what he expects. Only about 20% of ppl get As in 460. To get an A, you just study all the info enough in advance. 1.5-2 hours a day 10 days before = guaranteed A. Studying 2-3 days before = not possible. If you manage time well, you'll do great.
He is really nice, but at times I felt like he was passive-aggresive. I studied very hard for his tests and failed. He covers 2 chapters a day and goes really fast. The tests are horrible and he asks you to define things we never went over in class. Killed my hopes of geting into a good medical school
Extremely difficult class with an intense amount of studying. No homework, no quizze... just three exams.
Easiest class of my life. Got above a 100 in the class, but then again maybe it's cause I like science and am a science major. All you have to do is take good notes and study them for like 10-15 mins a day. Not much hard concepts in bio 101...
Duggins is a GREAT teacher possibly one of the best I've ever had. He pretty much knows everything about what he teaches. His tests are very straightforward as long as you memorize his notes word for word. I read all his notes and made flashcards and managed to make an A on all his tests. So it's definitely possible.
Definitely knows a lot about his field, but isn't good at teaching it. I did well in the class only because I knew the subject well already; his notes don't make any sense because he moves at a crazy pace with no organization. Only 3 tests to make your whole grade. Possible to get a good grade, but don't count on him to help you get it.
Extremely difficult. Would not recommend. He is a nice guy, and is very knowledgable. Tests are much more difficult than other biology 101 classes. Teaches as if students alreayd know material.
There is no doubt Duggins knows his stuff. He is really straightforward about the information he expects you to know for the tests, and usually there are no surprises. But all the tests are short answer, so it's really hard to remember everything he expects you to know. If you can get another teacher, try to. But Duggins isn't that bad.
He is a very hard teacher! Avoid him if possible! Majority of the class fails him every semester. His test are all short answer, fill-in the blank, and essay! He moves really fast and is all over the place with his notes!
Most ridiculous class of my life. I got an easy A, but I mean really, all the important stuff we learn in class he doesn't even test us on. The test questions are so open ended and vague. He shouldn't make us study so much when he tests us on so little. Avoid him if possible.
Nice guy. Notes are written by hand and so unorganized it is unreal. Knows everything thing there is to know about Bio. Tests are hard. Don't take him. You will probably have to retake Biology 101 again.
This class was pretty difficult. The tests were much harder than any other bio 101 class. He is very straight forward with his information though. You have to write down pretty much every word he says throughout the semester. I'm glad I took him, but I would't take him again. Be prepared to work hard.
The simple fact of the matter is that Duggins expects a lot from his students. It is a ton of hard work and studying but he doesn't pull any trick questions. He gives you a list of possible essay questions and 95% of the material on the exam come from that list. This is not a class to cram at the last minute for. You'll learn a lot but have to work
I learned a ton, worked like hell, and got an A. If you are serious about biology or med school you need to take this course. Duggins is very picky when it comes to test answers but he pretty much tells you what you need to know. Good lecturer. Study at least a week prior to each test.
Moves quickly with notes. Tests are very difficult. DO NOT wait until the last minute to study. Avoid Duggins if at all possible.
Exams are very difficult; short answer sections essentially want you to list anything he;s ever said about a subject. However, his lectures come almost directly from the book. Lectures move fast, you have to be very dedicated to do well.
not a hard teacher if you study for his test. you literally have no work besides studying for his tests which is all memorization. if you memorize your notes you are set and make sure you attend lecture because his tests are completely based off everything he says in lecture.
He's not as hard as a lot of people make him out to be! He's a very sweet professor and I definitely recommend taking him if you are pre med... I learned so much from him that, even though it was my lowest grade class, I plan on taking him every chance I get.
I loved Dr. Duggins. Very sad I won't have him again. The class does require a lot of focus and studying but is not impossible. I finished with a B and felt very good about how I did overall. He is very sweet and very helpful if you have questions. Take notes on your laptop! It helped me keep up with him. And use note cards to study with.
Duggins is actually pretty easy, everyone complains but it is probably because they don't go to class. If you study you should do well. I made a 101 on the first test and ended the class with an A. I took him again for 102.
I graduated with my BS in Biology in 2006, and VOLUNTARILY took Duggins many times. Back in school for nursing and I now measure all my professors against him. He was difficult, but you were forced to learn the material for a passing grade; I still remember many topics. Memorize your notes, ask questions, clarify & you'll do well.
Took him for BIOL 101 and got a 99 overall. Now taking him again for BIOL 102 and just made a 103 on the first test. It's not hard. People just complain because they're lazy. If you take him be prepared for a lot of memorizing. Also, the second half of BIOl 102 will be taught by someone else, which sucks.
senior bio major. premed: record all lectures, memorize every word and concept word-for-word AS HE SAID it(very important). Tests are extremely difficult. hardest class taken through my career. don't attempt to take in conjunction with a heavy course load. To prepare for an exam: study =>5hrs/day for at LEAST 1 week. very difficult class.
I absolutely adore Duggins. I really liked his class and his teaching style. You do need to attend class and pay attention because he tells you what he wants you to hear. I excelled in Biol 101 and now I am taking his Biol 102 class. Great teacher and love the free response test bc straight to the point.
Physiology is a tough subject, but Duggins is great in lecture at explaining things. Tests are difficult, but if you take the time to study, outline essays, and memorize pretty much everything he says, it isn't impossible. I got a 50 on the first exam but managed to improve my other tests and ended class with a B.
He is very tough. Do not expect to walk in his class and make and A. He's very thorough so study probably a week an advance. Not exaggerating. He's great if you want a challenge!
You need to take this if you are Pre-med, everything is on the MCAT. Record and listen to every lecture, recopy notes and take book notes to get an A. This class separates the boys from the men, that being said Duggins is the best teacher in Bio dept and everything will make perfect sense if you try.
The ratings saying that Duggins is easy/not bad are most likely people who are pre-med or very good at science. Don't get me wrong, he's an intelligent guy. He is very knowledgeable and is willing to help you. But honestly, if science is not your thing, don't take his class. A lot of people do drop. I did fine, but it is a lot of work and studying.
Every one makes him out to be a bad professor, but honestly, I was upset when he only taught the first half of the semester. Sure, he is hard, but if you actually know the material, you will do fine. He tells you the first day that he wants you to remember everything he says for the exam... He's not exaggerating! Notecards are great!
I have never learned more in a class in my life. Duggins is extremely thorough and makes sure you know everything you need. A lot of people drop the class, but if you're a serious student who cares about doing well you will be able to manage. Excellent quality teacher.
His tests are really hard. I used a recorder and took notes and made a 22 and 38 on his tests. When I talked with him, asked about supplementary tools, he was very rude and snappy. He's a mean little man.
People say Duggins is hard only because they are not putting in the effort and expect an A magically. TAKE NOTES, RECORD LECTURES AND STUDY AHEAD. I was ranked 3/281 in bio 101 and 1/191 in bio 102. If you do what I said (STUDY AHEAD OF TIME) and make sure you know the concept exactly how Duggins said it then you will be fine.
Without a doubt the worst professor I have ever had. Expects you to reiterate every precise detail he says. NO multiple choice. All short answer, fill in the blank, and ESSAY. Barely writes notes up on the screen. Unless you're a pre-med major and have to genuinely learn the material, this class is RIDICULOUSLY hard.
Duggins is a challenging professor but if you wanna know biology then this guy is the number one man to get you there. Started out doing really bad on his tests but worked my way up to great grades! you have to put in the work but definitely worth it.
His tests are NOT that bad. The first section is basically vocabulary. He gives you a term and then you write down everything you learned about it. 2nd section is fill in the blank. He gives you the definition, you give him the word. 3rd section is 'essay' and by essay I mean drawing diagrams (he also emails essays that may be on the test before)
This professor will prepare you for all of the upper level bio courses. If you are pre-med you need to take this guy. I got an A and because he prepared us so well, all of the 300-400 level bio classes I'm taking now feel like review.
Is this an easy class? No. Is he a great professor? Yes. You will have to put in a lot of time to study for this class and it is a TON of material but he is a great professor and wants you to learn. He prepares you for graduate level classes.
An A or B is definitely attainable if you're willing to put in the study hours. If you're not interested in biology and aren't wanting to study a lot, you might want to look into taking another professor. He doesn't curve and is a bit monotoned but overall he's a pretty cool guy and is more than knowledgeable in his content area.
Classic college professor. Took him three times. Best professor I've ever had, never learned more from anyone else. Hard? You betcha. But it really makes you learn the material. You WILL walk out of his classes smarter. If you don't care about working hard for his class, don't take it, you won't succeed. Definitely would take him again though.
He is quite a difficult teacher. You must attend class because the test comes strictly from what he says. Almost half of my class(300 students in the class) failed the first test, if that is any indicator. He is great in giving you the whole picture and you will leave the class with a thorough understanding of biology. You have to study hard
He's a really nice man but this class is ridiculously hard. Tests are fill in the blank and you must draw diagrams compared to other classes with multiple choice tests. More than half of the class failed the first test. Avoid this professor if you can! Many people change majors after a run in with Duggins but if you pass you'll feel accomplished.
He is a difficult teacher. He is VERY scatter-brained and gives a lot of information that are not on his exams. He doesn't give extra credit, and his tests are super hard!! I would study a few days in advance until the actual test day, and still did poorly. Do not recommend taking him.
If you have even the slightest bit of laziness in your blood, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I REPEAT: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Duggins gives no notes, no powerpoints, no extra credit, etc. Tests are short answer, fill in the blank, and essay and hard as hell. I wish I had read the reviews on here prior to signing up.
People here are just lazy. Its not hard, its called memorization. period. You cant wait 3-4 days before an exam and expect to know every thing on his tests. Start early on, and the material EXACTLY like he says it. I took him last year and did great! Just realize that this class will take A LOT of effort.
Lets put it this way: If you cannot handle doing well in this class (although it is hard) then how do you expect to handle upper level classes let alone any type of health related graduate school.
The class was very difficult, I think it was in part the material and part the way he handled the class. What really bothered me about him was his attitude when I asked him after class how he suggested I study because I didn't do well on the first test and he told me that if I was asking him that I probably shouldn't be in college. AND he was hard.
If are lazy, like me, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You sit through an hour of lecture, half of the notes don't even show up on the exam, the exam is short answer, fill in blank, and an essay. Extrememly hard. He knows what he is doing, but his class it just hard.
Gives unnecessary notes and the tests are ALL short answer. Super hard at that. Try to avoid this class if possible
Do NOT take this class. Save your gpa and take any other professor for biology. His tests are very difficult. Half of his students fail.
IF you aren't in love with bio, DON'T take him. He's HARD! so if you don't like a challenge, don't take him. He is very detailed oriented, extremely peculiar, but grades fairly. Attendance isn't mandatory but his tests are straight off the notes. Ohh and it's essay test with a few fill in the blanks!
good teacher. Exams were not always fair because the material that would show up on exams would sometimes be material we didn't cover or briefly covered. It is possible to get a good grade if you know what HE is looking for on exams.
Not an easy class, exams cover much less material than class. Short answer/essay format, need to study in advance to do well. His goal is prep. for MCAT - possibly not a helpful class for non-med school routes. Lectures clearly, just a plethora of information. Grading is clear, although he may curve final some depending on the class distribution.
WAS ON ACADEMIC PROBATION LAST YEAR FOR FAILING TOO MANY STUDENTS!!! very scattered brain. gives a lot of notes that aren't on the exam. will write everywhere on his notepad. doesn't explain things very well. doesn't have good office hours, not willing to help. tests are VERY hard.
Short answer/fill in the blank/essay exams. He doesn't explain things very well and there is no extra credit in the class other than a few extra credit questions on exams. Very monotone and puts everyone to sleep.
Make sure you go to class everyday. This class is no joke. It will be one of the most difficult biology classes you will take. Record every lecture and go back through. I found it helpful to rewrite the notes in a more structured form. He wants his words. Tests essay based but as long as you write down what he said in class you will do fine.
I absolutely adore Duggins to such an extent that I am voluntarily taking him spring semester. Yes, I will admit the class is difficult;however, if you actually put forth effort, you should be fine. He is a very knowledgeable man. Prior to taking this course, my interest in biology was practically nonexistent. I finished the course with an A.
Dr. Duggins is a good teacher, but his teaching style just didn't suit me. He is sort of all over the place with his lectures, in the way that he gives a lot of information that isn't on his tests, making it hard to decipher what to focus on when studying. I really enjoyed his lectures though.
Duggins expects a lot but is an excellent professor. Took two courses with him. Anatomy is hard but do-able, make sure to take notes carefully and memorize everything he says for tests. Anatomy lab was the hardest part, definitely take the time to go to the lab outside of lab time to practice identifying structures to do well on the lab practicals.
Dr. Duggin's class was by far one of my favorites! Its difficult since the tests are essay and fill in the blank format, but as long as you go to class, take detailed notes/record each lecture and learn EVERYTHING he says you will make an A! In my opinion, on of the best teachers in the bio department!
I was really worried about taking this class, all of his horror stories, but it really wasn't bad. He explains exactly what his tests are like and even mentions "Hey, maybe you want to know this" whenever something is important. As long as you study you should do fine, but you do have to study. You will DEFINITELY know the information by the end.
Save yourself the semester long headache and take this course with another professor. This was supposed to be a "101" course. This guy makes his exams so hard its mind blowing. WARNING: SAVE YOUR GPA AND TAKE SOMEONE ELSE. Theres a reason duggins has so many negative reviews on here, especially for bio 101
If you're not a science major I don't suggest taking him unless you want a challenge. He is one of the best professors I've ever had. His tests are hard, attendance isn't mandatory but you have to attend lecture to receive a good grade. No need to buy the textbook. If you're wanting to really learn biology, take him!! (especially if you're premed)
If you dont have a good background in bio already then DO NOT take Duggins. Also don't expect any multiple choice on tests or extra credit. I would say just be safe and avoid him all together if possible
Thinks that his subject is the most important in the world and expects you to know fine detail for everything he covers. He grades very harshly and is not willing to compromise on giving credit back. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I got a B- in this class only because I worked excessively hard.
1) Take good notes (record if you need to). 2) Memorize said notes. If you follow those two steps, his class is fairly easy. If not, it's pretty impossible. Besides that, he's personable and I liked him as a teacher.
WARNING WARNING WARNING BE BE READY TO RECORD, TAKE NOTES AND CROSS CHECK WITH OTHER STUDENTS BEFORE YOU TAKE HIM. He only regards what he says in class and the textbook do not matter for him. He is a know it all I give him that because he knows biology but to teach?. Am not sure. save your GPA and take another teacher or give it your all.
Took this class during the summer. Ton of material and Duggins moves quickly through it. Sometimes lectures may seem a bit all over the place but he does say what the possible essays will be on the exams. Duggins is very strict about grading exams but as long as you pay attention in class, take detailed notes, and make notecards you should be fine.
Attendance is not mandatory but you need to go to class. WRITE down everything he says! He gives you a list of possible essay questions but there is also long definitions and fill in the blanks. His tests tend to pick out the smaller details rather than the bigger picture and you have to include everything but its not impossible to do well.
1. very good professor. knows a lot about the subject 2. tests are based on everything he says in class. 3. TAKE NOTES AND RECORD LECTURES. memorize material based on how he says it. 4. go to office hours and go over tests he will explain how you got it wrong
He's very handsome, but cannot teach. made an 94 though, I recommend. His Hawaiian shirts show off his muscles. 3 tests that are tedious if you don't study, but if you, you'll be fine. TAKE HIM!
I would avoid taking him at all costs, even if that means waiting to take biology during second semester. His class is very tough and solely based on 3 tests and the final exam. There is no homework, attendance, or extra credit to help boost your grade. He's setting all his students up too fail. His handwriting is eligible &he doesn't use the book
YOU HAVE TO STUDY EVERY NIGHT. Very good, smart professor, but he really wants his own words regurgitated back to him for his tests. You have to pay attention to everything he writes down. If you really want to learn the subject, take Duggins. If you just need the credit, take an easier professor. Also, don't buy the textbook; you won't use it.
Honestly worst teacher I have ever had. He isn't clear about anything and barely explains. His tests are all essay and fill in the blank, no multiple choice. I studied for two weeks straight and barely made a D. I'm a bio major and still didn't understand half of the stuff he said. Save yourself and don't take him.
you need to know every detail for the exams he gives you, and write in paragraphs... :(
Notes are scattered without structure and hard to read. Takes off for really small mistakes. Doesn't refer to book.
Duggins makes you work your grade and the class may be a little difficult, but if you study then you will easily pass. The people complaining about him are slackers and want to be handed an A. He definitely knows what he is talking about. My only complaint is that he bounces around with the notes, but you can follow along in the book.
I would venture to say that the majority of people complaining of the difficulty of his classes are those fresh out of high school who aren't used to academic rigor. His class requires the student to KNOW the material, not just be familiar with it. If you want to do well on the MCAT or the GRE, it's the kind of class you want to take.
The tests aren't multiple choice so good luck with studying
his notes are all over the place and make so sense
Worst Class I have ever taken. Studied for this class more than all my other classes combined and still couldn't pass. Save your sanity and take another class.
very confusing notes and lecture. hard grader. tests are NOT multiple choice.
Test are short answer, fill-in-blank, and essay. He grades very tough (misspelled words .. etc.) The recent test we had many people did not simplify their answers although they were correct and he took off 8 points out of 9 possible. There's no homework or extra cred, so there's no possible way to pull up your grade if you don't do good his test.
If you don't want to or don't have time to study everyday don't take. He is very specific with his wording, so if you have trouble memorizing phrases or spelling, don't take him. There's no multiple choice; there's short answer, fill in the blank, and essays. Take if you really want to learn biology, otherwise, find an easier class.
Worst professor I've ever had! His tests are fill in the blank, short answer, drawing diagrams, etc. If you don't write the answer in the words he uses to explain it, he'll most likely take off. The only grades are the four exams.
Attendance is not mandatory; however, he will give you possibly test questions during his lecture. I would say he is straight forward about what's going to be on the test, but that would be a lie. He sends out practice problems and possible essay questions in emails, but don't pay attention to those because none of them are going to be on the test.
I took AP Biology last year and even though the material was the same, Duggins made this class super hard. Even when I obviously knew the material, if you don't repeat it on the tests exactly like he said it in class, you will get points taken off. Although Duggins knows what he is talking about, he lacks the ability to grade fairly. DO NOT TAKE.
If you really pay attention during his lectures, his tests are only moderately challenging. Definitely not an easy A, but I personally am not looking for an easy A. If you are a science major, he will be beneficial. If you are not a science major and you're just taking for common core, I would not suggest taking him.
All of his tests are fill in the blank, no multiple choice. He requires you to be very specific, so if you don't write and include exactly what he's looking for, you get points taken off. No partial credit, ever. His questions are very broad and not specific, so its hard to tell what exactly he wants from you.
Definitely one of the best professors I've had. The people complaining on here just wanted an easy A, and his class isn't necessarily easy, but it's manageable, and he really gives you everything you need to do well.
Duggins is a boss. Best professor at USC. People want easy A's and he's not handing them out. He challenges you to really learn the material and do well. It is satisfying when you ace a test in his class, which is rare. Ive done it on all exams by the way because I worked my butt off. If he ever comes back to teach, I urge you to take the challenge
Many people find this class very difficult, which it is. The subject matter is difficult. However if you pay attention in class and take notes on what he is saying there is no reason for anyone to fail. If you're not willing to go to class and take in the information then he is not the teacher for you, and the major probably isn't either. Loved!
Great professor. Lots of information and a very quick paced lectures. Hard exams, but he does give you everything on them in depth.
If you are not a student that can MEMORIZE every single thing from lecture, DO NOT TAKE HIM. His tests are ridiculously hard. I would know the information, but I could not take the type of tests he gave us. It was all fill in the blank. Give me a matching or multiple choice test, I would have an A. I made a D.
Don't take if at all possible. If you do take get ready to work.
Hardest professor I've ever had. I am taking 500 level biology with all A's. His tests are ridiculously difficult. He wants exactly what he said in class, not what the textbook says. Even if you are right, you wrong if it is not word for word. He's a great teacher though, I know Bio 101 better than any other subject because of him. Made a B+.
My bio 303 class was easier than his class. Had to memorize and draw out things it was terrible. I passed because i can memorize things i made a D on all test but the final was cumulative and i made a 96 passing with a C in the class. Record his lectures!!!!!!
I didn't take him once, not twice, but three times. Made an A every time. He's brilliant and you had to write down everything verbatim. There was no ambiguity - these were the tests. He made you aware of it and made you own the prep for it. Undoubtedly one of the harder teachers but you'll notice you tend to also learn the most from those sorts.
