Worse Teacher Ever!
He seems almost too cool, but don't be fooled. He is a jerk behind closed doors. I did extra credit assignments for him and there was always some BS reason he had as to why i got not points. He's easy, but don't tak eadvantage of it.
very funny and a nice guy
Dr. Evans is a very good teacher. While the class is no cake walk, he is very organized and clear about what is expected up front - and that is so much better than an unorganized, wishy-washy teacher.
cool teacher. lectures are somewhat boring, but overall an easy class. lots of extra credit which is very helpful to boost up the grade. lots of group work and papers are pretty easy too. nothing hard, just lots of work.
He seemed really cool the first few days, but then he was a jerk. He gave us all these bogus assignments.
Not a cool guy...acts like it at first...dont be fooled....

Took an online class with him. He gave some pretty stupid assignments. Also if you don't like your grade on as assignment good luck with getting an answer from him that makes sense.
His assignments are really hard for a 101 course. He's more concerned with protocol than learning it seems. Occasionally helpful, but not usually. Frustrating!
Pedantic, obsessed with protocol and format, inflexible and disengaged. Volume of work, particularly of primary source reading assigned is completely out of line with other classes with the same credit load. Can not discourage you too strongly from from taking any class with this guy.

I fully agree, i did extra credit and all the assignments and I still failed bc he felt as if i was not following his directions. Most of the time his reasons for the low grade were no where in the directions. Awful teacher!
Had him for an online class; the worst thing I've ever done. His assignment questions are not related to what his expectations, his grading is sporadic, his explantations for his grading are incomprehensible, and his concern seemed to be more about following his narrow defintions and policy than actually learning anything about history. Stay away!
Find another professor! This guy is crazy. I did get an A in the course, but only after bringing him to the dean for lying about my paper. Example of rediculous workload, 5 novels w/ a paper on each coupled w/ a rediculous set of rules for writing. The more you protest, the lower your grade! Won't return emails unless they match his format exactly.
If you are looking for an easy A, don't bother taking this class. If you are looking for a challenge, go for it!
not a good prof at all...he's not clear on what he wants. on top of that, the comments that he writes after papers are extremely brief, maybe only a couple words. tough to get in touch with as well. don't take his class...
HORRIBLE. He is more concerned with his policies and laziness than whether or not you are learning the subject. He requires one paragraph to one page papers on unclear questions and offers no help whatsoever. I often asked for help and he would give me little to no advice. He left limited feedback and was a useless professor. DO NOT TAKE!
He doesnt not teach you a thing but its an easy class. You come into class for points, he askes random questions. I would say its not hard but its not easy. The only test you have is the midterm and the final which he never talks about you just have to do it yourself thats the only hard part. Its not so bad as people say it is.
I just took his His 112 class fall 07 and fished with an F. I did all his assimgnet but gave me a poor grade for that. the final was very hard and it 25% of your final; grade which. my grade in nvcc connect is showing up as an F. Do not take him if you want to pass.
Stay away. Endless essays and writing assignments, composed mostly of abstract, ambiguous questions. His feedback on assignments is useless, nothing but writing style and grammar critiques. Assignments and exams have nothing in common. Terrible course, terrible professor.
This guy is awful!!! I have multiple graduate degrees and am a published author in scholarly journals, yet I still need can't write. He is by far the worst professor I have ever encountered. Please do not take his class!!!
This is the biggest disappointment in a class I've ever had. He is more interested in writing style and grammer than the student learning about history. He was useless and limited feedback, offers no help and just refers you back to "Charlie's Writing Center" if you have questions. Not helpful at all.
This professor is the worst I have ever encountered. Unorganized; constantly lost my email assignments; then accused me of not completing my work. I showed him proof of submission;HE STILL COMPLAINED. He cares more about grammar writing style than teacing history. VERY condesending & rude. Please don't waste your money taking his class.

He is very anal about format and structure. He requires a lot of reading and essay writing, and is very rigid about the format in which you turn things in. He is also very critical about your writing style, he just dwells too much on the little things.
He makes the class interesting so much that almost every person joins in on the discussion. Usually teachers go by the book so to give their lectures but he doesn't. He instead talks about certain themes and provides supplementary info so you have to learn the material in the textbook by yourself.
There is no way you can fail this class
Although there is a lot of work required (writing, message board responses, etc.) he tells you exactly what is expected of you. Its a lot, but you know upfront and everything is very clear, so its not hard to tell how you are doing in the class. He will answer any questions. EXAMS ARE ALL HANDWRITTEN AND LENGTHY! I liked the structure.
This guy is lazy a lot of work
Do NOT take. I ignored all the other posts about him and took he class anyway. Doesnt care if you are learning. I will be filing a grievance. Never encountered such an anti-student, unorganized, lunatic teacher.
His assignments are tough. Anyone looking for an easy A isn't going to get one here, however he is by far, one of the best teachers I've ever had the pleasure of having and History isn't even my major. His ELI classes are AWESOME. No scheduled assignments which makes it perfect for my schedule. I actually learned something in his class.
Prof. Evans is obviously a history buff. He has a quirky teaching style, what you would expect from a history geek. Took the class online-assignments were not hard. Its hard to get an A on an individual assignment-but there was PLENTY of extra credit and therefore opportunity to learn more about the subject than is required to pass.
He gave me a D because of his firm rule of not turning in more than one assignment per day. The fact I actually completed the assignments and aced the midterm and final were not nearly as important as his devotion to his silly administrative rules. Also, I'm confused if this was history or comp 1. He values format over knowledge of the subject.
Online: As others have said, the class was very centered on writing and grammar, but you cannot do poorly in the class if you just do the assignments. Easy A. On a 1000 point scale, with 1000 points of extra credit possible, REALLY!! Just Google "Charles Evans NVCC" and you'll see everything you have to do for the whole semester.
Online: As others have said, the class was very centered on writing and grammar, but you cannot do poorly in the class if you just do the assignments. Easy A. On a 1000 point scale, with 1000 points of extra credit possible, & no late grades, REALLY!! Just Google "Charles Evans NVCC" and you'll see everything you have to do for the whole semester.
This class is not easy. You will, however, learn. He is VERY nitpicky on your writing style and has a cryptic way of getting back to you. He seems funny from his video- overly serious in his email. Only take this class if you have a lot of time for reading-it's like information overload there are so many links to click on and so many papers.
Awesome professor. Assignments are not that hard but is very picky about your writing. A lot of work but in the end it is worth it because you learn a lot. ELI class is very interesting and if you want to learn something take him!
This guy isn't an awful teacher, but the one time I approached him after getting a C on a paper in order to ask what I could do to improve he assumed I was going to argue with him. He was very combative, and unhelpful.
Um...take his online class. There is 500 points of extra credit opportunity, plus he tells you EXACTLY what to study for on the two tests. He is grammar obsessed and he does come of as rude-sounding in his emails, but I got an A in the class because I did his assignments and EC the EXACT way he told me to...definately not very difficult.
Online class that I highly encourage you to take! Professor gives you ALL of the assignments and extra credit, you work at your own pace. He IS nitpicky about writing but I think that's for your benefit...not his. I started the class in August and was finished by mid October.
HE is TERRIBLE! His only concern is about writing structure. I have received A's and B's in my college english classes but yet he tells me I am not writing clear enough thesis statements. He doesn't care about the history context of anything at all. And he tends to be sarcastic in his emails. I don't appreciate that especially when I'm PAYING!!!
I took this class online and somehow I got an A in it. It is very challenging and the workload is overwhelming at times but if you keep doing your assignments along with extra credit, you should be fine. This is a challenging class though, my final took 3 hours to complete. You have to follow his rules in order to pass. Be careful if you choose him
He is the worst teacher. Don't take classes with him. I don't know why is he still in NOVA. As soon as you talk to him he thinks you are arguing with him and he doesn't help you at all.
Don't take classes with him. He has a bad attitude!
I suggest taking ANY of Professor Evans classes online if you need to fill history reqs. He gives you the schedule on day 1 and you work at your pace. It took me about 4 weeks to finish the course. He does require you to write on a college skill level and in order to do well you do have to read and comprehend the text...but again it's SUPER EASY!!
Does just enough to get paid
He's not the greatest teacher I've ever studied under, but he's not as bad as a lot of people on here have said. He Gives lots of extra credit opportunities and if you just show up for class, you cannot fail. He tries to find things people are interested in learning about and teach about them, which appealed to me. His attitude is strange though...
ONLINE: he's upfront with the course load which is good--besides that he's a mess. his papers he assigns are so vague you have to email him and his response to the question are VAGUE!! its a lot of writing and he grades more like an english professor.if i could go back i would of dropped him and took another professor.
Like everyone else said, REALLY strict on how you write. He'll send you back assignments again and again until he's happy with it. However, you DO learn something in the process. Lots of extra credit assignments make it easy to get an A
I agree he has a nice structured syllabus. whatever. Every essay written was graded extremely hard with no help on what exactly he was looking for or explanation of the grade or how to improve for the next assignment. if you want a very rude and unhelpful teacher take his class.
I was really looking forward to HIS 112 but was extreemly unhappy with Prof. Evans. I wish I would have seen these ratings prior to taking the course. He never liked my sentence structure and when I asked him for an example he said he would not send one to me. No help whatsoever! Never received feedback on Tests either! He def is combative too.
I'm an A+ student, and this teacher made me extremely annoyed. I took his online class and regretted it from the first week. His work load makes me think that he doesn't think people have lives besides his class....DISLIKE!
Its all about the extra credit. Don't spend too much time on each assignment just do more of them. He will critique your writing. Dont worry just do alot of assignments. Think quanity.(with assignments not words). Even if you get straight 80s you will still get an A. Test aren't bad. They are well defined easy to Ace. Great teacher.
ALL I CAN SAY IS Do NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM. THE WORST TEACHER EVER!
He is not good at all. He is very disorganize and doesn't know how to teach. I wouldn't recommend this teacher.
Unreasonable grading rubric on written assignments. Unrealistic expectations. Wants students to fit a large amount of information into a short paragraph - inflexible on paragraph length and structure. This is my major and I feel like I'm taking a 400 level English Comp class. I'm a writer and a history major. Avoid.
He really knows his stuff. Have taken two of his classes. Enjoyed both of them.
Nice Professor. Very consistent and expects college level work. He knows his stuff for this class as that is his specialty. Lots of extra credit chances and it made the difference and made sure I got an A!! I am looking forward to taking 242!!
Took this as an online class along with 3 other classes. To be fair, he makes you work for a good grade, but you will work! His assignments are intense and demanding and he ALWAYS had a comment about the thesis statement (I thought I was in history, not English). I would NOT suggest you take as an online class. 2 written exams @ 3 hrs each. tough!!
Amazing professor! I took his online class. Assignments and exams were straightforward, and I enjoyed doing most of them. I had no interest in history before taking his class, but now I love it! I've learned so much, and I would definitely take more classes with him. Take him if you get the chance!
Simply awful. The material and assignments are very reasonable. The grading is completely divorced from mastery of the material, and based on completely undefined english composition expectations. Emails to clarify expectations only left me more confused. AVOID!
His online class website is a disaster at best, so you better navigate it entirely to learn where stuff is located. His tests are easy so long as you study the guide, just give yourself plenty of time to do it because it's all handwritten. There's plenty of extra credit, so do it just to be safe because he's very particular in the way he grades.
Great online teacher. Learned alot of intersting things. Teacher is very helpful and responsive.
Lots of extra credit. Good comments to improve work. You know exactly what's on the test.
THIS IS NOT AN "EASY A" CLASS AT ALL! Will not put up with lazines, lies, ignorance, or tardiness. Not your "mommy" style teacher, so if you can't handle grown-ups, move on. While he is very specific on how and when he wants things done, almost to the point of confusion, he does truly care about the student learning accurately and fully.
Its a different kind of course than any I took prior & I enjoyed the challenge both for the difference & as a history major. Dr. was always very helpful, considerate, & consistent. Lots of extra credit to where you should get a B or higher & both exams were early in this class (b4 week 7) I really enjoyed taking Dr. Evans for the third time here!
This guy cancelled the class at the last minute, like when everybody was in the classroom he never showed up. Then I took this course online with him and he wasn't anymore helpful.
My first online class. Got an A. Very organized. All requirements listed up front. Work load not unreasonable. LOTS of EASY extra credit. I found Evans to be a very generous grader. His few comments made me a better writer. Tests were long, but he gave lots of points. You don't even need textbook. He tells you terms. Look up online & study.
Professor Evan's Blackboard organization skills are poor. Most of his assignments are essays. There are a lot of readings. A LOT. Be prepared to read and take notes. He gives you a study guide for the exams-- which you write by hand. Study/read thoroughly and an A is achievable.
His online course is a little confusing as their are numerous sub-pages! Lots of work! Mostly writing assignments which involves a lot of reading. You can not slack off in this class! Hard class! Exams contain few multiple choice questions and numerous essay answers. Does give a lot of EC. Difficult grader! History/ENGLISH teacher! Effort=Grade
I hated this class at first but once you understand what you're supposed to do, you get the hang of it. His website is confusing to follow, so make sure you open every link/read everything before starting your work. Memorization heavy exams!! Lots of extra credit though so don't be scared. Extremely essay heavy! You can get an A if you work hard.
Thought it was a really good course. I thought the website the professor made was great, easy to follow and made each assignment very clair. He was quick to respond, and I found it to be pretty interesting. It was a lot of essays, but they didn't take to long. Good Professor. Would definitely recommend.
Hated this class. ended up with an F too much work not worth it
Taking this class was not hard, but wasn't easy either. There is a lot of reading, and most of his assignments are essays. The exams are an overload. You have to memorize a lot and take notes and you'll pass the class.
Still need to do the final exam and already have an A in the class. There are A LOT of extra credit, and i'm talking about 300-400 points of extra credit. Papers required are one to three page papers, nothing too difficult. You have to be extremely dumb to fail this class. No joke. Everything with the assignments are straightforward.
My 1st online class & still the best. Tons & tons of fairly easy extra credit, 5 pts here, 10 pts there. Total @ 1000 pts of extra credit. You only need to pass the tests. Extra credit will determine your grade. I didn't have to do a paper cuz I already maxed points. Tip:Don't read the textbook. Google & learn the vocab & chapter questions.
I am consistently an A student, but the 8-wk schedule is unrealistic for anyone who wants to make a good grade. The subject matter was interesting, but we had to read 2 complete books in the first 2 weeks of class -1 on the Cold War, 1 on Decolonization. We had to write thorough essays without notes in a test setting - the 1st test took 4 hours.
Prof Evans' online syllabi gives you the entire semester's assignments, deadlines, etc, which let me get a head start . You will need to use the internet on some of the key terms and study questions but he gives TONS of extra cred and he is great about giving you feedback on papers before due dates. Tests can be hard but effortA in this class.
Prof. Evans doesn't joke about material. His 8 wk online class involve a lot of reading, but he makes the material pretty interesting. I had a really tough time on an exam, but I got in touch and he was really helpful. He gives you a ton of opportunities to save your grade, and he's helpful if you need it. I would definitely take another course!
An excellent professor. Possibly the greatest history professor to ever walk the planet Earth and cast a shadow on all other history professors, who he is probably really nice to and teaches a bit of history to, if they need it. A warm professor, whip smart, there for you, wants to see you succeed, gives you freedom. Triple double mega recommend.
Had this been a regular 16 week course, the deadlines would have been achievable. If you have a life outside of this one class, do not take him. The workload is what made this class so difficult. The assignments were time consuming. I'm a full time student and couldn't find time to do EVERYTHING AND read multiple books within a few short weeks.
He is a great professor who takes history very seriously. I did a lot of EC toward the beginning of the course and locked a decent grade in. I didn't even fully complete the midterm and final and will pass easily. He grades based on points not assignment weight.
Really rude. Probably the worst teacher I've had by far. I'd you take his class be prepared to be disappointed by his manner of grading and extreme work loads. He will take off insane amounts of points if your paper is longer than a page or if a paragraph is more than 5 sentences. He won't accept more than one assignment in a calendar day. Avoid!!!
Easiest online class I've ever taken (especially for 8 weeks). Quickly got the hang of assignments, and they are very simple. Prof Evans gives great feedback, very quick to respond to emails, and always willing to help. UNLIMITED AMOUNT OF EXTRA CREDIT!! So do not feel intimated by exams. I recommend the professor and this class for online.
Prof Evans responds extremely quickly to emails. He will be short w/you if he wants you to figure out your own questions, to get you thinking. He gives unlimited extra credit (if you need it, use it!). He wants you to do well, so send drafts of papers and ask questions if you need. I would recommend students to take this course w/him & online.
Hated this class. ended up with an F too much work not worth it.
I took him online, and I really had to do was write papers. The test are essay heavy, but don't worry you can still get an A if you do all the other work. He will help you if you ask. The one thing I hates the most about this online class was that there was a group project in the end which was ridiculous considering the group members lived so far
I took his class online, there is A LOT of work. There's about 4-6 books you're supposed to read to be able to do his assignments. If you have a job or a life I would NOT take his class. The assignments require A LOT of work and so do his extra credit assignments. He has way too much free time on his hands.
This is the worst history professor you can ever take. He thinks no one does anything else but writing about history, and writing only from the his perspective, he expects everyone to write like him. He'd put deadlines of two assignments at the same day, yet refuse to accept but only one per day. He's a tough grader, and such a waste of time&grade
Posts assignments on his unattractive and difficult to navigate website and his test layouts are atrocious. "You need the textbook to pass with a good grade." Well if he actually provided lectures at all, instead of doing the bare minimum of grading assignments and poorly answering questions, he might get a higher rating. Oh, and he's pretentious.
This class was enjoyable for the most part. Some things could have been done differently. Having to read two books on top of everything in an 8-week course is a bit much, especially with other classes. As a teacher, he's pretty good at feedback and his video lectures can be helpful. More work involving the textbook would help.
READ HIS WRITING RUBRIC. A lot of your points will come from just formatting your paper correctly. He always responds swiftly to emails, so make sure you take advantage of sending him drafts and asking questions. Also, start reading the books before they are due, because by the time the assignments roll around you'll only have 3 days to read them.
The best online class I have taken. Each week he gives opportunity for extra credit, and has a clear grading criteria and syllabus. He responds to email quickly and gives great feedback. He sends emails to remind of the upcoming assignment. It is not an easy class, lots of reading but he's great! take Mr. Evans!
This class was a lot of work, but he is very clear in his directions and expectations. For the midterm and final he provides the essay questions and words to define before so studying is clear. Assignments due weekly, but papers are only a page or two. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
Took the online course for HIS 112. You need a textbook and the class starts immediately. Not recommended for a summer course goes by way too fast! Tests are NOT multiple choice, you need to write out paragraphs or essays to answer. Expects you to work in groups for an online course which I thought was dumb no one ever checked their email.
Make sure you read everything before taking his class because this professor doesn't have sympathy. He doesn't care to fail you just not turning in one assignment. He failed me for not turning in one assignment. Don't mess up with him. my grade on blackboard was a "B" but he still failed me.
If you have to take any HIS classes through NOVA, pick another professor. Take Francis Rothenhoefer instead! Seriously! Prof Evans will drive you crazy with his endless videos and never-ending project explanations. He enjoys giving unnecessary overloads of information that you don't need. And, he says to read the whole book. You don't need to!
A lot of reading and if you're not into History it really pulls you down. Grades writings mostly on your style and not the content. Dropped me 10 points for not reiterating my three main points in the same order. Course was manageable though.
I don't know why Professor Evans has a low rating, but he's not bad of a professor. Obviously, you have to read the textbook for this course, and his assignments are that easy; you just have to earn it. Also, he's a fair grader and gives a lot of extra credit points/opportunities. I would honestly take him for HIS 102.
Prof. Evans was a wonderful professor. He clearly outlined what was expected of you and gives you the opportunity to work ahead in the course. There are extra credit options every single week and he also lets you send him your writing assignments for review; gives great feedback. I am planning on taking HIS 112 with him. Would absolutely recommend.
DO NOT TAKE THIS ONLINE CLASS. Syllabus is incredibly disorganized, just like his feedback.
I liked this class and felt lucky I chose him since it was a random choice. There's a fair amount of work--but not too hard. I didn't read most of the book but I got an A. Just need to find a way to study for what's on the tests--but he provides thorough study guides. Also great feedback on papers and projects--very accessible.
Here's the t: he's tough! I had to work for my A-not for slackers! But he's so knowledgeable, responds quick, tons of extracredit, very organized. Took summer 6weeks. Papers every week, 1 group project, 1 big project. Strict but I learned a lot. No MC,long tests but gives great study guides. If you're lazy don't take, but I liked him a lot!
okay so before i took his class i came on here to get my self ready for the semester. regardless of the terrible reviews i still took his class, and i wish i could go back and undo that. okay he is nice and laidback. other than that the class is terrible. he doesnt know how to run a class. super unorganized
Not recommended.
Do not take his class
Professor Evans was a great History 112 Professor! He gave feedback and grades back within a day of turning anything in. He offered so much extra credit that it was easy to get an A if you completed all the work. He checked in regularly and really cares about student success.
I dont see why people dont like him. Take it from me, Prof Evans is literally the most chill person ever. There are 4 quizzes, no tests. 2 questions per quiz and he wants a paragraph answer. 2 projects, one individual and one group. There is in class group discussions once a week. Overall a very easy class and fun guy. We all love him.
An easy "A" just be present and be prepared. He certainly does not deserve 2.8 rate! He is very kind and his extra credit opportunities are incomparable to any other professor.
Professor Charles is amazing! Take his class! He was a little bit tough grader, however, if you try a little bit more than usual, you are going to pass with a good grade. Trust me on that!
I am not a big fan of History but Prof. Evans really made it cool. The course is learned with all the students giving presentations so if you pay attention it is a very easy task to accomplish. He is a very helpful and understanding professor and he is worth taking. He provides SO MUCH extra credit so you should not fail for any reason.
Prof Evans is seriously the best instructor Ive had. I took his class online, and he uses his own website that is full of everything you need to get an A. He responds and grades really quick, has an insane amount of extra credit opportunities, and you can tell he really just wants all of his student to be successful. The exams were super easy too!
For my class, this was basically the week. First class of the week, we had one or two students give a presentation on the topic for the week, and then the second class, we had a group paragraph to turn in. Pretty easy class, few quizzes, and pretty laidback. One thing is that he doesn't give great feedback, but overall fine.
Took Professor Evans online for HIS112; could not have been more disappointed in my choice. He is an easy grader with clear criteria, but for an asynchronous class he clearly misunderstands how to teach. He requires many due dates before dates, i.e. "Tell me what project you'd like to a week in advance." otherwise inaccessible. Many more like that
He has extra credit in literally every module. He doesn't really care for his students and is really an "oh well," type of guy when you approach him with a problem. His tests are not multiple choice and you really have to study for them. He also doesn't have specific days to turn in work and just has random dates throughout the week chosen.
Prof Evans is a very arrogant man that has unreasonable expectations for students. He also grades arbitrarily with few comments, if any. He has nonsense writing rules that do not apply in any other class. Stay far away.
He is a great prof, I took him in person for his 112 so we had group paragraphs every week but we went up to him he checked and gave feedback so we could improve it and turn it in. He gives great feedback, not a lot of work outside of class, and is overall a cool dude. Give him a try you will make great friends in his class.
Super nice guy but his grading is a little strict! You also have to do a LOT of writing and reading, but if thats up your alley then you're all good :) If you ask for his help he is more than willing to give it to you, he also gives you many chances for extra credit and grades well if you properly put in the effort!
Professor Evans is a nice, laidback guy, but the class can be a lot of work. Lots of writing and reading, but if you put in the effort, he's a fair grader. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for study prep.
