The class was fun and Goodman is very into what he teaches.
the class is alright, nothin to excitin, and his laugh drives you nuts, if you can deal with corny jokes i guess youre all set
prof. goodman is one of my favorite professors. he's so into what he's teaching and he knows everything there is to know about the topics. definitely take a class with him!!
My favorite professor this year. He was very helpful to me for changing my final exam schedule. Also very passionate about the topics, which makes the class really interesting.
This professor is a great person to hear speak. He is very passionate about the topics which he teaches and in turn, that makes you very interested. The course is great for gaining new perspectives and I highly recommend it.
professor Goodman is the man. he's knows a LOT about what he's talking about and he's always very excited when teaching. his energy is contagious, but you really do have to get used to his corny jokes though. best teacher i've had here at bing.
Tho he speaks very fast, it just shows that he's a sharp prof that knows his stuff. Very energetic and gets u interested in the class. Take advantage of asking questions when ur confused b/c he realli speeds through his material.
His teaching style bores me!!
Unclear. Almost impossible to get a real answer from him. AVOID!
Class is easy as possible given the difficulty of the material. Goodman is helpful both to those who ask questions and those who listen. He understands where you are coming from and always tries to use the best of what is said to him. Excellent vocab. Zen
very energetic
Great teacher who seems to be passionate and fully adept at what he teaches. Highly recommend if you are willing to think outside the box.
Professor Goodman is a great professor. DO NOT TAKE A SECTION WITH A FEMALE NAMED "MARTIN", she is a crazy ****.
Knows a lot about what he teaches.
Not really that hard of a class- the material is confusing as a whole and very boring. Goodman is ok- he struggles to clearly explain himself, and at times, makes it much more confusing than necessary.
Wonderful professor, extremely intelligent and very clear despite having to teach such cryptic material. He cares a lot about his class and it shows
good teacher, knows his subject and very passionate about it. a good class the material is difficult but he makes it as easy as he can and tries to explain things as best as he can. good class all in all
Took Asian Philosophy with him last semester; he's really great. He knows his subject and does his best to help you out, since the topics can be very opaque. He's completely approachable, even endearing. I think this guy is great and if I had a better mind for philosophy I'd take his Buddhist Ethics
Excellent teacher. The class discusses Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, and Confucianism, but especially the first three. Professor Goodman is himself a Buddhist, but he does not force his beliefs on his students, only provides arguments for and against any topic that arises. Coursework: five short responses, two 4-6 page essays, and one final.
Prof. Goodman is a very smart man. He definitely knows his stuff however there were times that i felt he was pushing his ideals on the students. During the discussion of Buddhism, I was completely lost. Even so, his class was pretty easy.
Fantastic professor, i've taken three classes with him now. Intelligent and dedicated, he's always willing to help out student's during office hours. He's also understanding if you get sick or have personal problems and need an extension. One of the best Binghamton has to offer.
classes are impossible to sit through. he talks as if he's the "enlightened one" and makes things alot more complicated than it actually is. if u just go home and google all the terms you'll probably learn more. take this calss if u are interested in learning a bunch of indian religious terms that you wont be able to pronounce anyway.
Professor Goodman is the smartest person I've ever met. He doesn't just know the text, he also knows anything that was ever said or could possibly be said about the text. As a result, he can answer any question you pose with frightening clarity. Don't take it personally when he obliterates your arguments and you'll have a blast.
Goodman is just that. I look forward to this class every Tuesday and Thursday in a big way. I'm taking whatever I can with this guy. A MUST!
Great professor. He really knows what he is talking about. Topics are very interesting and his grading system is very lenient and fair. However, I do have to say, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS JUST FOR YOUR GEN ED REQUIREMENT. Take it only if you are really interested in philosophy or majoring in philosophy.
Professor Goodman is an incredibily sophisticated teacher of philosophy. Despite this, he is able to communicate to students at any level. Anyone who has a bad experience with him most likely has no dedication to academics. I would recommend him to any and all Binghamton Students interested in philosophy.
hard to follow sometimes, moves to fast, at least in my class attacks religion
Professor Goodman really knows what he's talking about, and genuinely seems to like teaching (the same can't be said for other professors I've had) He wants you to understand and do as well as possible, and does a great job of clarifying things. He's a good lecturer, very energetic, even if his jokes are slightly cheesy. I definitely recommend him.
This is the BEST class in BU hands down. Everything in this class was so interesting & Goodman is by far the most amazing teacher! Even though you might not be a philosophy major, this class is a MUST in your 4 years at Bing. It?s a little hard at first, but don't worry, it gets easier as time goes on & tests are much easier than class material.
Goodman is amazing. I bow to all the things he's shared with me. Don't worry when you have to cover stuff that's not that interesting, cuz it always comes back around.
This Professor is AMAZING! He is really enthusiastic, has really funny comments, and literally teaches you everything you need to know. I highly suggest doing the readings because they are interesting, but if you don't he will go over EVERYTHING you will need to know in class. AWESOME CLASS/AWESOME Professor!!!
Genius
The smartest man you will ever meet, he knows everything about everything. Goodman is a very committed and prepared teacher and the class was very interesting. Do your weekly reading and you shouldn't have a problem because he is very clear. I would suggest this class to anyone.
This man is brilliant! May be the smartest professor on this campus. Should be teaching at Harvard. We are extremely lucky to have him here at Binghamton! Also very fair, and conscious about the needs of his students.
CLASS IS EXTREMELY BORING AND HE TALKS TOO FAST AND BARELY WRITES ON THE BOARD EXCEPT FOR WHEN HE WRITES DOWN RANDOM INDIAN WORDS.
Very good at explaining topics, and he can even be funny. Very helpful in office hours. Grading is done by TA's, but he can override TA grades if you talk to him and he thinks you deserve a better grade. Reading assignments aren't overbearing. Tests (2) based solely on what he brings up in class. 2 6-8 page papers.
Professor Goodman is brilliant! He is one of the smartest people I've ever met but is a down-to-earth kind of guy. I would recommend this class to anyone! I wish each lecture was longer! He is very accommodating and cares about his students and has a sense of humor and is passionate about the subjects and makes it interesting. He is a great man!
Goodman is a brilliant lecturer, attendance is not taken but you won't want to miss class. Reading is light: 5 lecture quizes a question related to the reading given ahead of time each lecture. Your TA will make or break this class since they grade your papers and rate your participation (55%) . Be wary of the curve number of As given is limited.
Interesting class and is a great professor. However, was a little bit preachy when it came to issues he felt very strongly (animal cruelty, gay rights, etc.) At times could have shown both sides more. Still consider it to be a good class
Professor Goodman is the most interesting person on this campus. If you ever have the chance to take his Asian Philosophy course do it. He's an absolute genius, extremely passionate and explains things in a way that allows everyone to understand. He is never condescending and acts as if every question is a good one. TAs grade papers and tests
I've taken Asian Philosophy and Buddhist Metaphysics with Professor Goodman. His lectures are the best. He is very passionate and knowledgeable about what he teaches and explains complex concepts in a way that anyone can understand. He also gives a lot of attention to every question. Very helpful in office hours. Really cares.
I do not agree with anyone who says Professor Goodman is hard to understand. If you ask him any question, he will do everything in his power to make it clear to you. He is brilliant and his lectures are extremely interesting. He truly loves what he does and is very organized. I would recommend this class to anyone who loves Asian Studies.
Professor Goodman is so passionate and knowledgable about the subjects he lectures about. He is very approachable and will always make time for questions even in lecture.
Goodman was probably the most phenomenal professor I've had thus far at Binghamton. He is so enthusiastic and passionate about what he teaches and I highly recommend anyone in the major (or just in general) to take a course with him. Not gonna lie, the class is tough, just get to know your TA (they do the grading), study hard, and you will be fine
Fantastic instructor. Very humorous and interesting.
Professor Goodman has been the best professor Ive had so far at Binghamton. He is a tough grader but he makes his lectures very interesting and they are easy to understand. His was the only class where the lecture hall was full almost every class. Take a class with him as soon as possible
Professor Goodman is so passionate about the subjects he lectures. midterm and finally were essay and TA were the one who grade the test.
Goodman has possibly the most organized and precise lectures within the Bing Phil Department. Everything is delivered in order and virtually anybody should be able to follow that order and understand what he's getting at. The material can be hard to penetrate, but he will elucidate it very clearly. Highly suggested as an entry course into phil.
Professor Goodman is probably the smartest person I've ever met. His lectures are fascinating and organized, he is super clear and knowledgable, and he really encourages his students to think critically. I don't care what your major is- don't graduate without taking a course with Goodman. He's arguably the best professor on campus.
He's is definitely one of my favorite professors. Is very intelligent and you will learn a lot from him! Definitely recommend his class!
Absolutely amazing. Made every class interesting, has an immense amount of knowledge on the topics discussed, and encouraged students to ask questions when they didn't understand. By far the best professor I've had and most likely the best on campus.
Long long papers, somewhat of a tough grader, but amazing classprofessor. You walk away learning a lot, and you can tell Goodman is truly a scholar in the subject.
Professor Goodman's lectures make me excited to come to class in the morning. He is well rounded and knowledgeable .
Professor Goodman is an extremely educated man and he makes lectures interesting. He is a tough grader, and provides weekly readings. However, he explains everything clearly and you will learn a lot from taking his class.
Professor Goodman was an excellent Professor. I will avoid stating the obvious about his lectures and helpfulness by going straight to the point. My only complaint was consistently having two readings a week. Some weeks were hectic and I could only fit one reading. Is he teaching one of your registered classes? You're in luck, just be a student.
A great class to take. Goodman is very intelligent and knowledgeable in his field and every topic per lecture. Readings were a bore sometimes but Goodman lectures really well and explains concepts really well. Again, EXPECT A LOT OF READING. Textbook is NECESSARY.
Prof. Goodman is phenomenal in lecture and is one of the best professors Binghamton has to offer. He explains concepts extremely well and the class is thought provoking. Goodman is willing to take the time to help those who seek help. The workload relative to other philosophy classes is rather minimal and manageable. Challenging but great class
Amazing lectures, and Goodman is so thorough in his explanations of concepts that you can probably get away with not doing the readings. He gives review sheets on exactly what you need to know for the midterm and final, so it isn't hard as long as you take good notes.
Best professor in Binghamton. If you are a philosophy major take him if you are not still take him you will walk away knowing so much. He is extremely knowledgeable about everything under and probably beyond the Sun. He is very helpful outside the classroom and is very relatable.
Took L&J. He is very intellectual and knowledgable on the subject. I enjoyed his class from syllabus week to finals. He is very detailed so pay attention in lecture & take notes you will succeed. Some have called him arrogant because of the way he lectures but do not be fooled, he's simply confident & actually really nice outside the classroom.
Best class I've ever taken, best professor I've ever had. Changed the way I look at the world. A lot of work and reading, but he's clear and fair about everything. He's organized and dedicated, to where he memorized verses from poems and Shakespeare to use accordingly in his lectures. Take any class from him and be open-minded.
Best Professor I've had and the smartest person I've ever met. He grills students who ask questions, so be prepared to defend your opinion. He really challenges you to think as well as to formulate your questions in a coherent way. Don't be intimidated! Go to his office hours, he really cares about his students & it's always awesome to chat w/
Charles Goodman is the MAN. I'm not kidding, he is the man. Every lecture is a good one and if I could take every class with him I would. The intellectual crush I have on this man is unreal. He is a genius. Please take this class, I would HIGHLY recommend.
very arrogant and opinionated. thinks he's way smarter than everyone else and often puts students down publicly in lecture. Extremely annoying voice and unpleasant lectures. Incredibly rude during office hour visits. lazy teacher, does not put any effort into providing helpful materials for students. by far worst professor i've had at bing.
Buddhist Metaphysics was amazing. Goodman is a professor who cares deeply about the subject, and his lectures are 90% of the time crystal clear if you pay attention. Amazing class, but readings can be dense. Graded on participation and three essays, two of which are revised. I'd advise you to go to office hours to discuss your paper, it helps alot
He is a fantastic professor. Breaks down difficult philosophical concepts into easily understandable subparts, and is always willing to explain something in a new and different way. Class is 2 huge papers both 20% midterm, final (25%) and pop quizzes. This is a very difficult class and I would only take it if u need it for major. But he is great!
The class is very paper and exam heavy. He is a great professor
1. 1st PHIL class ever taken, yet Goodman makes lectures interesting!! 2. Class is tough tho, final is cumulative 3. A LOT of readings & materials covered 4. Exams barely cover half of the material 5. My advice: Take good notes & don't skimp out on learning what he lists in the study guide (I couldn't keep up w/ half the readings, but managed a B)
The class is a lot of writing and reading but I walked out of every lecture feeling like a much smarter, worldly person. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone who likes to debate. Professor Goodman's lectures were inspiring, informative, and took both sides of the argument into account.
Took Law and Justice with Goodman even though I'm a math major. Was very happy that Goodman was unbiased to any political view and gave everybody a fair chance as long as you put in the effort. I rarely went to class and was lost throughout the whole semester but was able to pull a B with a couple all nighters before the exams. DO THE READINGS
Awesome, The Good-Man is Awake.
Prof Goodman is fantastic. Incredibly knowledgeable and his lectures are thoroughly entertaining. He breaks down and explains complex ideas extremely well and you'll leave every lecture feeling smarter. It's a challenging class, make sure you do the readings and work hard on the papers and exams. Overall, an amazing experience, I highly recommend
This is a class you want to show up to. Great lectures and great discussions! Readings can be a lot though, but he focuses more on the main ideas than picky details, so it's not hard. Very stimulating class, highly recommended go to office hours on time for feedback and help. If you show up, pay attention, and turn in papers you'll get a B+ easy.
Possibly the best class I've ever taken. The readings are interesting and the lectures are fantastic.
I got A- skimming readings/getting the gist of it, you can too. Go to lecs so you understand the central topics. 2 papers. They count for a lot-so you better get the A. Advice: even if you don't do the readings, pay special att. to readings that you'll focus on your essay. Study groups are best for this course. Exams: short answer and essays
Charles Goodman should be renamed Charles Greatman because he's such a great professor
Seriously great professor. Engages with the class a lot, and his office hours bring captivating conversations. Cares a lot about making sure the class has learnt the material sufficiently. Is fully cognizant that the class is 100 level and has freshmen, so gives extensions and a lot of help and tips with papers. Not an issue, but the TAs do grade.
Dr. Goodman is a great professor that truly cares about his students. He's extremely understanding and flexible when it comes to working with students and making sure they succeed in class. He is extremely knowledgeable about the topics discussed and in class, and while I've may have dozed off during some of his lectures, I've learned a lot.
Tbh don't take this class for a gen ed unless you're interested in the topic. He's a great professor and he's smart af, but if you don't like the topic you will hate it. the grading is fair, but holy hell is this class boring. Some people are really into it, if you are, def take it. If not, stay far away for your own sake. So many boring readings
Theres a lot of readings, lecture is helpful but he seems to ramble a lot.
Professor Goodman is extremely intelligent and he knows it. Come to class prepared to offer concise and intelligent feedback on readings. Its always fun to pick apart the aspects of different philosophies.
There are a lot of readings given in the class, but they aren't too difficult. Goodman is an amazing lecturer, even though my class was fully remote. The TA graded most of the assignments. He has office hours outside of class and so do the TAs. Very knowledgeable professor and his lectures are very interesting to listen to because he knows so much.
Excellence is the only word I have to describe Dr. Charles Goodman. He is truly an inspiration and philosophy students should strive to be more like him. He is, however, had to get a hold of. He had many hundreds of students at a time.
Great class. 10 1-2pg Response papers total and 3 papers excluding a midterm and final paper. So theres a lot of writing. But the response papers are easy and you can get an A just writing 1 page for them, the trick is to be sure u are directly following the prompt and nothing else. You can get away w skipping the readings if u take lecture notes
Graded by several 1-2 mini papers and 3 big papers. The mini ones are easy, but the longer papers are harder. TA's grade everything so make sure to go them if you are having difficulty with your essays. There is a participation grade so make sure to answer questions in discussions. All of the notes are NOT POSTED so make sure to go to lecture.
Insanely knowledgeable. Big brain. Clearly cares about the subjects he teaches, and brings in many real world issues and problems to pick apart or at least give a thorough look at in class. Receptive to questions and criticism, but keep in mind there are 200+ students so make good use of TAs and discussions. Class can open your eyes.
Professor Goodman tends to be on the defensive even before a question is fully asked. Is extraordinarily knowledgeable and eats, sleeps, and breathes philosophy. However , I suggest you go to your TA with questions. Hes still a great professor though.
Professor Goodman gives excellent lectures and is receptive to any and all questions. Interesting class too, but Goodman is a particularly harsh grader. If your papers are not 110% correct he will ding you for it. Expects undergrads to write at the same level of grad students. Make sure to frequent his office hours and get feedback on writing.
Two days before the final he told us the format of the test was changed from fill in the blank questions to 3 essays (2 short, 1 long) in 2 hours. The final was also at 8 p.m.
Worst final I've ever taken in my life. Extremely unfair. 3 essays in 2 hours. We've never had timed writing before this exam.
Please save yourself and don't take Phil 105 unless you need to. We had our final exam last night and it was pretty much impossible to finish in time. Written countless essays for this class and doesn't even count as a W credit.
final exam was 8-10pm online. didn't even finish half of the exam. not prepared for timed writing throughout this class.
this class was harder than my 300 level classes. can't believe this wasn't a W course, and the final exam is nearly impossible. please don't take this class!!!!
Unless you got a deep passion for this subject I would advise staying away b/c you might have a painful experience. For a level 100 class it honestly felt harder than some of my upper-levels. At least for this online sem, we had 5 response papers, 3 larger essays, and a final of 3 essays that needed to be completed in 2 hrs.
A lot of the buddhist and daoist philosphies discussed are some of the most important and most helpful things I've learned in my 4 years of college. This class is a lot of work but its honestly not hard to get an a-/b+ if u do all the work. The essays are all really easy and graded by grad tas. the final was absolutely hard as hell though
The prof clearly cared about the subject but there was a lot of reading and there should've been a writing credit. Wouldn't recommend if you don't like to write.
He knows a lot about the subject but this class is extremely difficult. Made the last paper longer than the other two on top of the final. In class writing assignments. 2 6-8 page papers and 1 8-10 page paper. His review sheet is just a list of topics from the syllabus. TA's can only give a certain number of A's. Do not take this class.
By far the worst class I have ever taken. I took this for gen ed and it was the worst decision I made. The readings are beyond difficult. 5 In-class writing assignments, 3 long papers, and a final. the review sheet for the final was not helpful whatsoever. Must go to your TA to pass. Professor is beyond knowledgeable but made course too difficult.
Goodman is brilliant and caring. His lectures are dense and can get a little boring, but are definitely stimulating and he is very knowledgeable. The work is manageable, just be sure to get on top of it early. TAs do all the grading though, so go to discussion and ask your questions there.
2 6-8 pg papers, 1 8-10 pg paper, very time consuming but easy to get a good grade. i took this as a gen ed and never went to class and got a b+. you really just need to go to discussion classes to do well and you dont even have to pay attention
Goodman's class was one of my favorites. The topics were so interesting and he was very passionate. I enjoyed hearing his insight on things, and he really opened my mind to new ideas. Take his class! You won't regret it. It is pretty easy overall, but the final was a bit absurd. Other than that, I would enroll in another one of his courses.
Goodman is clearly knowledgeable, but this class is far too difficult to be a 100 level class. DO NOT take this class as a gen-ed. Grade is based on a final, 5 mini writing assignments, and 3 papers that are all graded by TAs, and TAs are limited in the number of A's they can give out so you are competing with everyone else in your discussion.
Professor Goodman is passionate about what he teaches, and engages others in his lectures. He made the most complex philosophical theories easy to understand, and applied relevant real-life examples. This course was very reading-heavy, and the final was cumulative, so make sure to do the relevant readings. Great professor!
Go to lecture and skim the readings and you can do good in this class. Discussion section is super helpful. The papers are easy as long as you have had experience writing Philosophy papers. Applied topics are way more fun than the beginning of the semester when you learn the foundations.
I found Goodman to be rude and off-putting sometimes but not a bad teacher by any means. Skim the readings and take good lecture notes and you should be fine. Grades mostly on 3 essays and a final, I thought all of them were very fair. Class is pretty interesting, especially the second half. Good for PPL but I wouldn't recommend him for a gen ed
Although there are five random pop quizzes on the reading throughout the semester(worth 1% each), I didn't find reading to be necessary. Lectures summarize readings to help you in discussions, papers and the final. He has amazing and clear lectures where he writes most all notes on the board if you zone out and is very open to questions.
Please take this class. Prof Goodman is the best prof i've ever had and has so much knowledge. i am the type to sit first row in lecture and be extra and im also a philosophy major so maybe im dragging it but the topics you learn about are SO INTERESTING. there's a lot of reading but you can guarantee yourself an A by prewriting assignments.
You definitely have to work hard to get a good grade but personally I thought his lectures were great. TAs are also helpful. Sometimes his notes were all over the place but that's really my only complaint.
Mr. Goodman is the best, his lectures are engaging and easy to follow. Papers are easy too, literally just based on the lecture.
Really hard to get an A. And this is harder than my 300/400 level classes.
Prof. knows what he is talking about and it is clear that he enjoys it. However, he gives way too many readings/papers for a 100 course with no C credit. For a humanities course it should not have been so much work - readings are daily and pop-up quizzes are random. He is very inaccessible outside of class and everything is done through TAs.
I loved Law and Justice. Best class I have every taken, both instructor wise and content wise.
I enjoyed his lectures very much although I think he sometimes taught his opinion as fact. Your grades are completely dependent on the Ta you are assigned and it is only graded on 3 essays,5 pop quizzes (which were I page responses to the reading for the class ) which are decently easy and can be written before the class and the final.
He is so amazing! Favorite class EVER take Phil 146 with him. Such a fun and engaging class and I actually looked forward to going every day
This professor gave engaging lectures- I actually looked forward to going to them in the morning. He was very smart and also unbiased. I walked away learning a lot. There were 5 short answers in lectures randomly given but total they are only worth 5 percent of the grade. Overall, amazing professor. Would for sure take another class with him.
Horribly interesting class! Prof. Goodman clearly cares a lot about what he is teaching which is always a delightful quality. I loved attending lectures and I had fomo when I missed them. Goodman is a wonderful man!
This is the second class I've taken with Goodman and he is one of my favorite professors at BU. His lectures are very engaging and based on interesting topics. I wouldn't recommend this class to someone needing only an H credit unless you're very passionate about the topics -- way too much work for a gen-ed.
I feel so robbed of an education because I took this class. He graded papers based off of how much the ideas presented were similar to his own. He would disqualify well sourced facts because it didn't comply with his insane ideology. This wasn't offset by gaining any helpful skills or ideas. It was just a waste.
Professor Goodman was the professor who made me fall in love with philosophy. He was a great lecturer and clearly very passionate about the topic. The class is graded entirely by your TA though, which can suck if you have a hard one. 3 essays, 5 pop quizzes, and a final that he gives you a review sheet for. Overall, a very fair & knowledgable prof.
There was pop short essays for the assigned readings so do make sure to go to class. It can be boring sometimes but he was a good professor. as long as you take notes on what he is saying you will be just fine. there are always 6 page essays (I think 3 or 4 total) but they are not that bad. I think it is pretty hard to fail.
Professor Goodman is a great professor and does know what he is talking about. However Professor goodman gives op quizzes that if you miss it could drag your grade down. I had missed a few and had to ace the final in order to end with a B+. The class overally isnt so hard if your do the readings and listen in class. it is a lot of essay writing.
An amazing and talented lecturer. Fluidly draws connections between concepts and real world examples, and takes the time to answer questions to their fullest. I have never felt lost or unsure about the content after Professor Goodman explains it. Some pop quizzes, but with an opportunity to do them prior to class if you're not great on-the-spot.
IF you do one thing wrong with citing he will automatically take a whole letter grade off. He fights with my TA to lower the paper grades even more. If you appeal your grade he will just make it lower. Avoid this class even my TA said take it with the other professor and that we should've done our research before taking it with him.
Prof. Goodman is beyond doubt knowledgeable, but he never knows the struggles of ordinary people. He delivers too much content in every lecture. As a Year 1 or 2 student, you will find it extremely difficult to catch up what he said unless you have received intensive training on this aspect of political philosophy and legal philosophy before.
A professor with traditional elite mindset. His course design is to let the most brilliant students shine. However, the curriculum shows no mercy to students who belong to disadvantaged groups. If you took his Phil 146, make sure to start studying before the semester starts. Unreasonably demanding comparing with many difficult level 400 courses.
GREAT prof. Loved lectures, esp bc of how much they made me think OUTSIDE of class. Loves when students participate- he'll learn your name. Essays aren't bad, gives multiple prompts w allowance to write your own. Answers all questions. Able to meet students where they're at, and will challenge your ideas (and what-abouts) in-class. Good office hrs
Am taking PHIL380 with him and he's been awesome. The material was difficult but he does a great job at explaining it. He's extremely knowledgeable but also reasonable and forgiving. Don't take this class for an easy grade, take it if you want to learn something.
Dr. Goodman is one of the best professors I have had. He does a great job of taking the time to answer questions and work with students to help them understand the content. I emailed him a few times and he always got back to me right away. Just be aware of the 5 pop quizzes he gives throughout the semester and be aware there is a final exam!!
He is knowledgeable and excited about philosophy but enjoys making this “intro” class harder than it needed to be. 5 pop quizzes on many readings- write in advance. Not rlly accessible out of class. Doesn't let TA's give out more than a few A's. Final cumulative- easier than I thought it would be but I studied harder than I ever have for a test.
The most insane course I took. The professor is the only person who feels enjoyment during lectures and exam. He sets a difficulty level 100 course on paper that is actually at a level of 1000 in reality. He thinks we only need to study for his course this semester. During the exam, my TA and I exchanged wry smiles.
I have a good TA. She is a lovely person. But it does not prevent me from thinking that this is the most ridiculous course. Too many readings and writing for a difficulty level 100 course. The exam is more difficult than individual assignments. Too many topics too many questions.
More difficult than many other difficulty level 300 courses. Professor introduced too many concepts and articles every lecture. My TA Alex graded my two individual papers harshly. The exam review sheet is pointless. It is just a repetition of every concept the Professor taught. You need to know more than ten topics to answer the exam questions.
Too many haters don't want to work hard but still want to get a A. Professor teaches well, and my TA responded my email quickly even in holidays. I do not have enough time for revising the final exam, but I won't blame my professor and TA.
The most difficult course I took so far. Can't get rid of it because this is my core. Professor sets the exam questions at the graduate level. He just cares about a few top 1% students.
Goodman is an incredible lecturer. One of the best I've encountered. Beyond that, the material is straightforward. Be warned, this class requires a LOT of writing. There is no multiple choice on the final either — all short answer or essay. Attendance isn't required but I highly recommend it, at least go to your discussion. The TA's are also great.
Do not take this class unless you need to for PPL, took it as a Gen Ed and regretted it. So much material covered in lecture and SO much reading for homework. Unannounced short writings in class based on readings, but you can have questions in advance. Hope you get a good TA for papers. Heavy final exam with unhelpful "study guide"
Take this with a grain of salt as I took it for a gen ed as a Chem major, but I found the class very difficult. Lectures were clear and interesting, but grading was harsh. The two papers were 6-8 pages long with 9 days to complete. From what I heard TAs can only give 4 As per class, so people I found very knowledgeable were stuck getting B's.
My TA privately told me that she dislikes this course and the professor very much. The professor often disagreed with her grading and make intervention, but she needed to pretend that the grades are determined by her. If you appeal for your grade, the professor might threaten you with the possibility of receiving a lower grade than the original.
It is absurd that the professor does not include any feminist ethics in his course. Can justice in law be achieved without considering feminist perspectives? No! The final exam is incredibly difficult. I got full marks in discussion participation and two A-'s in the first and second papers but still failed to achieve an A- in the end.
The best thing about this professor were his lectures and topic discussions which were great. The Worst thing was that he is extremely intimidating and expects his students to be professional and smart when writing papers. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you will miss a boatload of notes. Also has pop-quizes based on the homework readings.
Goodman often mentions Harvard in his lectures. Ok we know that he is an alumnus at Harvard and he is brilliant. But his coursework requirements and final exam frustrate many who learn this subject for the first time. He hates students to appeal for their grades and would turn down your final grade if you did. I was a victim who originally got B+.
Amazing lectures. A good TA helps further. But beware, this is not a suitable course to those who have no background knowledge. Don't expect him to teach you at the beginner level, though this is an introductory course. He may be very rude if you appealed for your grade. If you get a A in his course, you may be able to enroll to Harvard Law School.
He's extremely smart but sometimes talks in an extremely complex way that makes it hard to understand interesting topics. The papers are graded pretty harshly, and it is hard to get an A on them.
Professor is ambitious. Two individual papers, each 6-8 pages; adversarial collaboration (8-16 pages), five in-class writing assignments and a final exam. However, his criteria for grading are both harsh and unclear. I criticized my TA for unclear instructions when I filled in the student survey, but I find that I wrongly accused her.
I appreciate the professor for not giving too many A's to please my classmates. Many classmates complain only because they cannot get an A, but they don't mention how they perform. When my TA Alex asked some simple questions, they failed to answer, showing that they did not do the reading. Giving too many A's results in grade inflation.
The only complaint about this course is that many classmates performed mediocrely but still managed to get a B+. It is unfair to hardworking individuals like me. I am concerned that employers will perceive me as only slightly better than my mediocre classmates.
I am sympathetic to my TA, even though she was not teaching well. The professor has taught this subject for twenty years and expects his students and TAs to catch up with him within a semester. His lectures are ten times denser than the assigned readings listed in the course outline. I appreciate my TA for explaining Plato's Republic well.
Sofia should be the head TA for this course. She possesses qualities that the professor lacks, such as being caring, considerate, lenient, soft-spoken, and inclusive. During the lectures, I raised my hand several times but was ignored by the professor. It was Sofia who made me feel included during the discussion classes.
very annoying class as writing requirements were not clear and were different from TA to TA. i had to argue for my paper and got my grade changed from a 75 to a 92 as my TA couldn't understand how to grade papers. there were pop writing assignments during lecture, but they weren't that difficult. the lectures were very dense, so attending helps.
Many classmates criticize my TA Alex for poor teaching performance and harsh grading, but they have some wrong focuses. The discussion classes are not supposed to deliver lectures, but to assess whether we have contributed discussions in quality. Their written assignments have obvious citation mistakes. What's wrong for Alex to give them a B- or C?
It was annoying that the professor did not explain clearly about his expectations and grading criteria. He often said, "Go to your TA..." However, my TA was not always clear about what he wanted. Different TAs have different standards. Unfortunately I have a harsh TA who gave me a B- and a C+ for my two papers due to some minor typos in citations.
I scored all A-'s except for this course. The written assignments are extremely heavy, and the final exam is very difficult. I understand that the professor always want our best, but he is unconsciously harsh. Two individual paper, with each six pages plus a sixteen-page adversarial collaboration. Is this really an introductory course?
Professor Goodman is a phenomenal lecturer. Personally, I really enjoyed Law and Justice's content. There is a lot of reading but quite frankly the lectures cover the material from the reading with page numbers given. 3 Papers in the semester. No midterm, just a final. TA's grade everything. Perfect if needed for your major.
This is the most difficult course I have taken so far. But I love my TA Sofia so much. She is lenient, kind, caring, knowledgeable, smart, and gives good feedback. I was afraid that I would score B- or below after the final exam, but she did her best to save my grade. Respected!
Prof. Goodman is fantastic at articulately conveying the material. I recommend attending every lecture and minimally preparing for the pop 'writing assignments so you're not cramming for the final. The papers are manageable if you know what you're talking about. It's not an easy class, but you will learn a lot if you put effort in.
Good professor. His lectures are comprehensive and he will thoughtfully answer questions. However, his final exam was absolutely horrific. Assignments through the semester are light and easy, but the final exam is grueling. Long unhelpful study guide. Final exam included multiple essays and 10+ confusing questions. Definitely a weed out course.
Very intense lectures, he gives random "pop-quiz" like assignments at the beginning of every few lectures which can be done as homework instead of in class, do them before!!! All the grading is done by the TA's, majority of grading comes from the essays which are hard but get easier. Worst part of this class was the cumulative final.
dude gives cool loectures but he talks so much and there's no slides or notes so his lectures just turn into him rambling. he has no class agenda so just go to class to make ur life easier. ta's grade everything. random in class responses that will really help ur grade. the class itself could have been really interesting but he just talks alot
If you have a choice, don't take this professor. He expected us to perform like a grad student. Can be rude if you ask him why his TA assigns a grade below A- for your individual assignment. Overall he is very busy and inaccessible outside class. He is knowledgeable but not understandable and kind.
If you takes this course, make sure you have a TA like Sofia who can break down the content in a more understandable way. This dude always loves to deliver massive content in a super complex way. He has strong elitist mindset which cannot tolerate our imperfections. If you cannot meet a good TA, I would recommend you to drop this course asap.
I won't recommend this course to first-year students. Even sophomores can be frustrated by the heavy workloads of this course. My cumulative CGPA is higher than 3.75, but I only achieved a B+ for this course. Very informative lectures, but Goodman was very demanding. The cumulative final exam made me scary. Taking it in your senior year is better.
Don't take this professor. He made the introductory course extremely difficult. Long essay assignments, demanding group project and a cumulative final exam.
Goodman finished his teaching about Rawls and Nozick within a lecture, and then finished his introduction to Plato's Republic within another lecture. He just showed off his knowledge without considering it is too much for an introductory course. He won't care because this is a PPL's core course so that there must be enough students to take it.
Tough grader but competent lecturer. Be prepared for a lot of papers.
This is definitely not a difficulty level 100 course. The professor is knowledgeable but has the curse of knowledge. He just taught too many topics, concepts and arguments every lecture. Many of his lecture content is outside the content of the assigned readings. He has unrealistic high expectations to the beginners.
At first you will get the impression that the class will be very difficult. Goodman's lectures gave me the best critical and analytical thinking experience ever. The amount of knowledge I have taken away from this class is far greater than I ever thought it would be. He is most likely one of the smartest persons you will every meet in your life.
goodman is is an engaging professor and an incredibly critical thinker but unfortunately knows so much about each topic that your understanding can get muddled in the side tangents and examples. my TA was great and an easy grader so i've done well in the class so far but found the final exam extremely difficult (not a lot of time to prepare)
Goodman is obviously very smart but teaches way too many things per a single lecture. Can be passive agressive when answering questions. Generally feels like a course designed more for grad-students. Papers are manageable but the final cumulative exam is the hardest part. Study guide was given 5 days before the exam with 500+ individual topics.
Goodman is a great lecturer, but if you aren't paying attn then you are screwed. Minimal outside readings, but they can help the lecture. GO TO LECTURE - seriously just go and take good comprehensive notes and you will do well in this class. He gets a lot of hate but just GO TO LECTURE, this is a weeder class!!!
He know what he is talking about, is very passionate, and is very apt in his field. He makes his lectures intriguing despite how boring some of the topics could be and offers extensions on assignments if need be. TAs are wonderful too, especially Tori. Tough final. Personally not my kind of class, Im a math major, should be more for PPL majors.
He is definitely very knowledgeable but it is just hard to get an A in this class; he has high expectations. My TA, Tori, is INCREDIBLE. Final exam is daunting with very little time to prepare (gave study guide less than a week before the final). Lectures are extremely dense with so much material crammed in. A lot of work for an intro level class.
Goodman is a typical scholar who never leaves the Ivory Tower. He can memorize the details of many books easily, but never understand the struggle of the beginners who have different backgrounds with him. He prefers to feed some one-year-old babies to drink excessive milk than what they need at this point. I feel very uncomfortable by his feeding!
I wouldn't take this course unless you have to. The final was brutal and the review sheet was not helpful in the slightest. Your grade is so reliant on your TA, and unfortunately I got the worst one. Tread lightly.
This professor is unlikely to understand why he receives so many negative feedbacks in recent years, but evidently he is not suitable to teach any introductory course. Unfortunately, he has taught Law and Justice for more than ten years and has become the director of the PPL program. This means the situation is unlikely to change in the future.
