he was a pretty cool teacher.. very easy and leaneant with his assignments!!
Mr H. was one of the most inspiring teachers I've ever had. He was always available to answer questions and I thought it was great the way he handled the on line class. His guidance allowed me to learn a lot about the way I write. Highly recommended!!!
Be prepared for alot of work. ALOT!!! For his online class at least two discussion postings, one journal, and one essay per week!! Over 1000 sometimes 1500 words per week. Pretty cool, helpful BUT ALOT OF WORK!!! So time consuming I had to drop
rude, ****, not interested in teaching, closed style of verbalizing and not pleased with himself.
good and bad
bad teacher! he is soooooo mean, and it's just too much work! don't take him, or you will end up dropping!
I was just wandering around and see how can people rate Prof Heimler to be rude and bad. He's very helpful interm of answering questions and help you in anyway. He's easy and smile often.
This instructor gives thoughtful writing assignments. You write papers and can revise them as much as you need to. Very available in office hourse and by email. Great class for improving your writing and grammar!
this teacher is very rude and the only thing he talks about in class is about his boat. he is very unorganized and does not give respect to students. avoid him like the plague!!!!
oh hes not that bad, he does tend to give alot of work but cmon now its english1a, your SUSPOSE to be writing essays people. he allows you to redo graded essays an infinite amount of times for higher grades which in theory makes his class COMPLETELY EASY if your not lazy. do some work it is school..
I had Mr Heimler both at 1A & 1C and learned a lot from his class. Lot of work but at the end, you can revise them for better grades. Teaches a UC-based essay style composition which is a plus. Participation is a must on discussions.
Prof. Heimler assigns a LOT of work. The work isn't particularly easy. There will be much reading and some of it is pretty boring. However, if you persevere and do all the writing assignments and the multiple revisions that he requires you'll come out of the class with your critical thinking skills honed and your writing skills sharpened.
Mr. Heimler expects a lot from him students and tries to prepare them for their higher education. I had to work very hard in his class but I learned a lot and I am now better prepared to transfer.
Horrible teacher!! i don't recommend him at all!! A lot of work is assigned, he's very unclear about his policy on returning papers for a higher grade. I tried a few times the next class period & was never able to turn it in. More than half the class d
what a great teacher! alot of work but he is an awsome teacher. If you are really trying to learn how to write you will be thankful you took this class.
This teacher is a very damn good teacher and those of you who are whining about how bad he is should put more effort in your assignments instead of sucking your thumb get real this is college not elementry school grow up and get with the program you want to be treated as an adult then act like one!
We read an interesting novel called The House Behind the Cedars, a book of poems by Gary Snyder and Hamlet. I didn't think I'd enjoy the class but I did. We had a cool field trip to the Japanese garden in Kelly Park. You learn alot in this class but have to work a lot on your writing and reading. Not for flakes and slackers!
Mr. Heimer is a very good teacher; however, he expect too much of his students. Most of his reading and totally bored like a piece of crap. His essay assignment is long as hell, usually 6-8 pages long. The first time I wrote the paper between 6-9 pages long, and my score was okay. Later I revision it again and he gave me a lower score. I am not sur
This instructor is very vocal when he begins to discuss his trouble marriage, his divorce, his exwife, money and childsupport. When I have asked him questions concerning classwork, he became irritated & disrespectful, but another student can ask the same question and he is cooperative & respectful. Please avoid the topic of marriage don't discuss
I did very well in his class, but he is not a good teacher. He ventures off topic and tends to be overly negative. Many of my classmates felt as though he was hyper critical and that he was not grading people on merit, rather he would grade based on preconceived notions. I would stay away if you are sensitive/worried about English (especially ESL)
This class requires a lot of reading and a lot of writing--it's taught at a UC and CSU level so if you're just trying to get a easy grade without improving your college levels skills, then this class is not for you. Each paper can be revised as many times as you like and the students are graded on a course portfolio. I improved my reading and wri
He thinks he is the best teacher at SJCC, which I never quite understood. He seemed to be judgmental, arrogant, and unhelpful. I could care less about his personal life...just teach the class please.
This class helped me because the teacher lets the students revise their papers as many times as needed. I rewrote my papers many times to make them have no errors. Very good class if you really want to improve your writing and want to work at the high college level.
He loves the sound of his own voice. He tried to sound positive, but when it came right down to teaching, he paid no attention. You'll either love him or hate him...hate doesn't apply to me but it is pretty close. Avoid him, you'll learn nothing.
Mr. Heimler seemed crazy and tough when I started his class, but by the end of the semester, everything he said made sense. Do not miss a class or the workload becomes difficult. I enjoyed classroom discussions, but was never quite sure of my standing in the class. Overall, I learned a great deal in this class.

two words — stay away!
the text book alone taught me more than this teacher. he wasnt at all helpful, nor did have have a desire to be when i asked questions. do yourself a favor and take another teacher... seriously.
I had to read and write so much in this class--my portfolio at the end was 60 pages because we can rewrite the essays as many times as we want. Not a class for lazy people who just want a easy time.
funny but discourage students sometimes.
This teacher makes us do so much work. So many essays revisions. And we have to read a bunch of books--who has time for that! But i got to revise all my essay three times and I actually improved. Don't take thisclass if your a slacker.
This prof expects people to be adults and take initiative to participate in their education. this class is not for slackers. read the books and take notes on them, it WILL help you with the assignments. also, do read the text book, it gives a backbone to his lectures. not a bad teacher..
he is a very rude teacher.. he kicked a girl out of class for having her phone out and saying she was cheating. he is always yelling and trying to be funny but he really isnt. i would not have taken his class if i knew he was this bad. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASSES !!!
to the person who wrote on 6/30/10 in eng92. the girl was being disrespectful from the beginning. She was talking back to him and ended up cussing him out... i am no t saying he is the best teacher in the world but she shouldnt have acted like that. hello your in college grow up!! He dosent mess around
He is a easy teacher. We can revise our essays as many time as we want to get an A. I would take his class if I need to take some more English class.
I'm complete disagree with all the comments said that he a bad teacher. I took him in summer session and pass with an "A". Well he require a lot of reading, but if you came to class regularly and do all the assign. You will Pass...Not a class for lazy people who just want a easy time...
he is easy teacher...
This teacher is very helpful to students who haven't had an easy time in other schools. He teaches a lot of books by African Americans and Latinos.
He's such a great instructor and teaching skills are easy. I loved his course so much I took him for 1A, 1B, and 1C. If your lazy don't take him because you have to write many essay and actually learn a few things. He is a funny guy too. Take him!
This guy , o ma god , maybe i just go him in a bad semester but couple days back he called the whole class freeloaders and then compared our lives to "useless" black people, he then went on to compare our lives to that of african american after theend of the civil war according to booker t washingtons book up from slavery. overall...BEST TEACHER EV
I had to drop out because i fell behind on a couple assignments, you don't want to slack off in this class but if you turn everything on time and do your best you will learn a lot from this guy. he is very funny and really cares about his students (though he may not sound like he dose) i recommend this course for those ho are not lazy and really wh
He is very funny, helpful and understanding. He is very great teacher.
I had this teacher for english 1B and man was he the laziest teacher I've ever had! Lol I mean we'd have plenty of assignments but many times we would just come to class to turn them in and then he'd let us go! Other times we would write a simple pointless page and we could leave. His attitude was "these students are hopeless so why waste my time".
Teacher had no interest on students. It seems as if he never read papers and graded them low for nothing. I re-wrote several times and had other teachers review it (they thought my paper was good) and still he would give me a C. Maybe he grades on a "like student/don't like student" basis
Horrible!
So he was a funny guy, and I enjoyed talking to him. But my work was never good enough for him. There was always a reason why it wasn't good. And he also told the class that he loves to give "C's" as grades. The class was pointless, and wasted of my gas because he would just send us home if he didn't feel like teaching.
mr heimler was funny and had a lot of knowledge
A lot of reading- since it's online! I mentioned to him I may have to drop the class due To the reading, he was very understanding and said"turn them in when you can". I hope he doesn't change the format to "forum" because he had it to where you write a one page outline-awesome! Highly recommend him!
I enrolled on the online class and it was really fun. His weekly assignments and four essays are really easy which are based on the readings and films. Just keep up with the assignments and post on time. I got an A in the class. I will enrolled in his class again if he teaches Engl 1C.
I enrolled on the online class and it was fun. The weekly assignments and four essays are really easy which are based on the readings and films. Just keep up with all the assignments and post it on time. I got an A for the class.
He is horrible! He doesn't care about teaching and gives bad grades for fun
This teacher is very rude. I was excited to take this class but he never gave me a chance. There was times he was so rude and mean,i was trying my best and at times i wanted to cry. He belittles you in front of other class mates. He even took a student outside and was yelling at him. The whole class could see through the window. I had to withdrawl.
100+ pg reading, some videos to watch + forum posts/week, 2 longer essays (midterm and final) and regular check-ins with teacher. There's lots of material in the textbook, no outside reading required. Keep up with the reading and share your thoughts with the class/teacher regularly and you can achieve a good grade. A is not impossible.
He won't grade your paper if you turn it in late. If you take his online class you have to turn everything in ON TIME even though his syllabus says something different. He'll swamp you with essays/reading the first two months of class. He's a nice enough guy, just a bad online teacher. Stay away!
very bad!!!!
Reading 100+ pages each week, answer questions in paragraphs, check in weekly by e-mail, mid-term & final essay and a fun project; no outside research. He's interested in your thoughts, not what someone else already wrote on the subject. If you are self-motivated,organized and want to survey early literature, this is the class for you.
Online class was set up very confusing. Did not teach a single thing. Told us to google our information on how to write the type of essays he was looking for. If i had a question he wouldn't even answer it directly he would go around my question or give one word answers. Pretty much had to teach myself,Also ask the other online students for help
should i pass this godforsaken class, i will take it again regardless, as i have not gained a single shred of enlightenment or hope for posterity from taking this gentleman's course. it took him almost a week to respond to my emails, the assignments are vague and half-assembled and he doesn't explain why he gave you the grade he did. just don't.
He doesn't care about anyone's time but his own. It seemed we were always waiting around for him. He loves moodle!! Puts a lot up there and expects you to check it and know everything!
Don't take his online class! Avoid at all costs! This course started off nice, we read Outliers and wrote a paper on it but then the midterm papers were on topics so vague that it left me confused. When i asked for clarification he simply not helpful at all! dont do it!
The online class he teaches is not helpful. If you are looking for an easy A and don't mind reading the articles "he" wrote, yes, take this class. If you are looking to learn something about English Literature, do not take this class! He gives no online feedback on essays and does not engage with students apart from requiring them to text him.
Assignments are vague and his feedback is usually "did you answer the question?" Says you can text him for help but only tells you to keep referring to the original directions. I've never had a teacher refuse to help me when I didn't understand an assignment.
Good GOD! Taking his classes were a nightmare. He assigns the most obscure, confusing assignments. When you ask for clarity he is STILL vague. I went through these classes hoping I was doing was ok as there is little to NO feedback from him even when asked. No respect for timelines, assigned one final DAYS before the end of the class ARGH! Beware!
Mr. Heimler is the worst teacher I've ever had. He only gives a grade but no feedback and he wants revisions which is impossible with no feedback to refer to. An extremely tough grader. He takes days to respond to an email. After a few students asked him for some missing grades for assignments he responded with that only the final will count.
Mr. Heimler has very high standards--he holds students to a level expected at the University of California. If you want to excel in writing and reading then he is a good teacher. If you just want to get a grade without having to learn anything, he is not good for that. He can be very patient with students who are making an effort.
This class was relatively easy. All you have to do is read the books and write a small essay using quotes. There are two extra credit essay's in addition, so six if you do them all. The only thing that wasn't clear was the reading notes. You will earn your grade. If you don't like reading & analyzing then find someone else for your easy A.
He is a good instructor and teaches a very good method for completing a research paper. It cut the time I used to spend on research papers in half and still get a good paper. You will benefit from this in other classes where research papers are required.
I have been a straight A student for a year in college. I decided to take professor Heimler's class online and it was the worst experience ever. He is incredibly vague with his assignments and even more vague with his feedback on those assignments. After doing my first essay the response he gave was "I don't think you understood the assignment."
It starts off good but then the class and assignments take a turn for the worst. He gives random grades & when you ask for feedback either he doesn't respond or his response is vague with replies such you didn't follow task. Even when given the opportunity to write a research paper on your choosen career. He says that it is off topic and fails you
STAY AWAY from this teacher. He is the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. He does not teach you one single thing. He is incredibly vague with his instructions and feedback on assignments. Even when you ask for clarification he will reply: read the instruction carefully. I've never seen a teacher refuse to explain things.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. No matter what choices you have, no matter if classes are filled and he's the last one left, do not take him. Worst professors on this planet. I'm quite usually hard on myself and side with teacher's prospectives when it comes to tougher grading, but I don't know how this person became a professor. Arrogant, cocky and unorganized.
This class has helped me to grow with my writing skills. I learned a lot and I truly appreciated this class. He is a great instructor. Just remember why you are in school and that reason is to learn. If your honest with yourself and have the desire for greatness then take this class. If you do your work you will get an A.
This professor was the worst professor I have ever had. He literally gave me an F for one mistake, rather than helping me. I failed his course, after getting As and Bs, and a couple Cs. He is not a fair grader at all. He added content to the class last minute. He never really responded with much information that could help you, just a critic.
I'm currently a high school student taking this class over the summer so I didn't have to deal with it during my senior year but little did I know I was going to deal with a teacher who gave poor directions and gave little to no feedback on every assignment. Emailing and texting him led to no avail on my questions being answered. Not recommended.
This class was absolutely horrible. The amount of assignments were manageable, however it did not make up for the lack of help from the professor. When he graded assignments, I got no feedback whatsoever and then when I asked for help, his replies were vague and not helpful in the slightest. Do not take this class even if it is your last option.
Mr. Heimler is a very clear teacher. He explains himself quite well and often adds personal stories to help illustrate his point. The lectures are easy to follow if you come to every class. If you actually do the homework as assigned the "pop" quizzes are very easy to pass. The homework usually isn't very hard but sometimes can be time intensive.
Absolutely the worst professor. Forces students to text him for participation, doesn't have a clear rubric and grades very unfairly. Avoid at all costs.
I only took his online class and it was the worst experience. He assumes you know his expectations on how he wants you to write your papers. He grades very hard. When I asked why I got a certain grade on my paper, he did not reply for days and when he did, he never told me why.
Worst academic experience I have ever had. Professor grades unfairly and feedback given is not helpful. He doesn't respond to most questions.
I signed up for his online English 1A course without reading this page, and I regret it. His directions are not clear, he is a tough grader and he responds to questions with "If you followed directions, you're fine."... if he responds at all!
Instructor needs to be reevaluated as I believe he is very self-involved and not interested in helping a student succeed. When I reached out for help with an assignment his answer came days later and no information but a question, "did you understand the assisnment?" Hmm... if I did would I have asked you for help? He is condescending & rude
He doesnt give enough feedback to improve the works done, then when the final work is done he comes and criticize half of the work done, why dont just give the feedback since the beginning? He doesnt teach many things and expect you to know them, or tell you to google it. I have no idea how is he grading the works. Too much work within weeks.
As we all know , there are teachers who are entitled and have a big ego. This teacher is subject to all those components, that may push many on the edge. Although, the work is easy we are not provided with all the course content we need to move on to the next corresponding English class.
He seems to have a high standard and doesn't like to explain things thoroughly. At first, it seemed like he was willing to help but that wasn't the case during the end.
Me. Heimler does not give clear instructions on what he is looking for on papers. He assigns something new every class session, he is very arrogant and talks about himself during class. Constantly says English 1A is offered every semester instead of encouraging students to do better or ask for help they need. He does not keep grades up to date
The only positive thing I can say about his class is that he doesnt require you to have a textbook. However, he will assign a bunch of things every class and will post articles a few hours before class and expect you to read everything before you arrive. You cant miss a single assignment because his whole class is based on revisiting past essays.
Why does he grade so harshly on a first draft? He gives me a D then doesn't explain what I could do better so I'm left clueless for the final draft. His instructions are so unclear, I'm left emailing him 2000 questions about an assignment (all on one email) and he responds to one very vaguely. I can go on a whole rant but I don't have enough charac
I did well in this class, but no thanks to the professor. He was very rude in one-on-one conferences and provided minimal feedback on writing assignments. His Canvas classroom is disorganized with conflicting information. He seemed unable and unwilling to provide constructive commentary. Any questions about technique are met with "Google it."
He's rude and really not at all helpful. Would not recommend it at all.
He is the worst English teacher that you can ever have at SJCC. I do not recommend him to anyone. His assignments are vague, two essays every week, and he would rarely give an A or B for your hard work. Tough grader, and rude in his feedback. I dropped the class, because he is rude in his feedback and do not care about students hard work.
He is horrible. He gives you smart ass answers when asking for help or clarification." Read it and you tell me what it says", or "Google it". He changes assignments as you go and expects you to adjust with one day notice. I took him for intersession and had to drop 1 week before the end. If you need an English 1A class, don't take his. He is cocky.
The workload isn't bad at all, which I really liked. But there's a TON of poem analysis without ANY teaching of it. In 86A, we never learned poetry analysis. Prof. Heimler definitely expects you to know how to do it before you take the course. I wish we'd spent at least 2 weeks learning how to do it; otherwise, you get a strict B+ on assignments.
He's a kind old guy! He's got a great personality and all, but he's super extra about the assignments that prepare you for the next assignment, if that makes sense.
You WILL NOT get an A in this class if you take him. There is NO feedback on any of your work. He gives out strict Bs and Cs. He only asks questions like, "How did [event] or [trait] affect [author]?" after he grades your work. NOTHING about what you did right or wrong. Feels unapproachable where you'll be scared to ask for direct feedback too.
I got an A because I worked very hard. Don't expect him to teach or even explain anything to you when you ask for help. You'll be told to "google it" or met with some other smart remark like "what do you think it means." He doesn't even teach you about the English language but expects you to do a final research paper on another language.
What an awful teacher that puts no effort into his job. He hates teaching because he tells us to google everything while giving us vague answers to questions while he kicks back and ignores your email for a whole week after he tells you to send him a message when he could have told you in that exact message. I wish I could say more. TEACH US
This professor is not clear at all you could ask him for questions and he will not respond back to you with your answer he will answer you with another question! His unclear makes things very dificult to understand.
Be careful in enrolling with this professor, he provides vague instructions left for you to interpret, grades very harshly on first drafts, provides very vague comments on paper and expects you to "correct them". Does not have office hours to support students, expects you to text him instead, and still responds late to messages. Avoid for summer!!!
He discriminates against POC; also heard this from other professors on campus. He should get fired but has tenure.
On top of a lot of homework his directions are extremely complicated.
Do yourself a favor and do not take classes with him. Assigns so many papers and do not give any feedback. No extra credit and communication is through WhatsApp where he replays very poorly.
This professor has high expectations but isn't always clear in his instructions. While the class is challenging, using Unstuck ai and study groups can really help. The grading is tough, but putting in the effort pays off.
