TEST ARE VERY HARD.
Sucks. Always cannot answer questions.
Horrible teacher, doesn't explain clearly, grades really hard, thinks everyone in class is a math genius, Lots of homework, lots of useless boring lecture, will fail you in a heartbeat, if you'r on for a challange, it's this class.
Let's just say a teacher who home schools his children is going to be a hard a$$. His expectations are way too high for a man who does not actually teach a class.
He was a very challenging teacher. The tests were hard especially the final.ouch!I took him during the summer so it was three times the work.If your not good at math ,don't take it. But if you're up for the challenge then go for it.
despite the fact that he knew that everyone in the class was not up to speed, he just continued with the lesson plan. not a big help and boring as hell.
This teacher's lecture is very clear. Test is not hard, he likes to put the 1st question a hard one. He is not very smart, so it's a chance for you to get an A.
He isn't all that bad. You just got to buckle down and be willing to work for this grade. Hell it wasn't easy, trust me about that, i worked my butt off for that grade. He may seem mean at first, but he does want you to pass. so just suck it up and do it.
This teacher conditions his students to fail.
He is nice and he explained problems very clear. and the most important thing is that his grade is nice. he wouldn't take off any points on careless mistake. isn't that nice. the only thing u have to do well in his class is understanding math exactly.

He is nice
His lecture on the important part is short and simple, which is not enough for you to understand the topic. He uses all him time on copying the definitions and proves on board You have to work very hard to get an A.
I really like His lectures. I thought they were never boring. His tests are not hard, difficulty wise, it's that he never gives you enough time to finish a test. You have to work very fast.I visited him once during his office hours and he was not helpfull.
No calculators allowed.
No, he's not easy, but if you do the homework and ask questions if you still don't understand, then he does take the time to try to explain things. It's a lot of work, but it can be done (I got an "A" over the winter session).
he explains very well and thoroughly. he is very neat which helps you understand better. he loves definitions, which he puts in exams, but those are easy points right there. I took him in the winter and I got an "A". Very funny, class was never
I find myself fall in sleep a lot in he class. He gives lots of homework.
Great Teacher, fun class, just study your notes really hard and do ALL your homework!
I was getting an A in is class all semester never missed or anything, at the end of the semester my grandpa passed away and i called him to ask if i could take the test another day and he said no thats not a ligitamit excuse, i missed the test i got an F!
really a terrible guy! much...much homework and difficult test. he always smiles to u but i dont think it is true. i m really regret taking his class.
Excellent teacher!!! He explains very well. He is so clear during his lectures and he will make you visualize the material. His exams are HARD. Practice your homework as much as you can, you will get an "A".
VERY COOL TEACHER. CLASS WAS NEVER BORING. VERY CLEAR AND HIS NEATNESS WAS A PLUS IN UNDERSTANDING THE MATERIAL IT MADE GOOD NOTES. TESTS R NOT BAD IF YOU DO THE HW AND STUDY. I GOT A'S ON ALL THE TESTS. TAKE HIM AND YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

this professor is the best. he explains everything very clear. he makes math fun! he gives alot of homework and grades them strictly. his tests are easy. take this professor if you really want to understand math.
definitely not someone you want 2 take a short term (summer or winter), math class with. Very difficult.
i do not reccomend this teacher for math 131. i believe that you should take mrs. teneyeck. her test are much easier than mr. hogues.
A nice person, but not a helpful professor. Questions are not answered. Not always at office hours or askes you to ask questions later. No review for tests or final. Can be condescending to students. Very hard and VERY LONG tests.
One of the best math teachers at PCC, and trust me I've taken a lot of them. His tests are a bit difficult, but he doesn't subtract points for little mental mistakes. Very clear in his teaching.
hardest math teacher in school, but if you want to learn something then take him
The worst teacher. I got D. He didn't teach all the required parts. He gave only idea in brief. When I see the tests, they are extremely difficult to answer. And I can't get practice by seeing only the brief idea of text. Teach only the difficult one
it's a math class... that alone says it's not an easy class. the person that determines the grade in the end is the student. i made myself pass the class, just takes time and dedication. do all the hw it will help you in the end. be ready for hard work.
NO. He determined the grades. Period. It's one thing to be a difficult teacher, but it's a completely different thing to simply not know how to teach.
I don't recommend him. If you're a math major then yes, but everyone else...STAY AWAY!!
He is a serious teacher without the sense of humor, but it is easy to get high scores as long as you do the homework.
Difficult class but worth the time if you want to go on in math.
worst professor!!!
Although he has the best personality, he seems to be not-very-gifted at teaching. If you take him, it is most likely that you will have to study on your own with a textbook to do well on the test.
He is the WORST TEACHER!!! he expect you to understand everything before class
does not break it down enough for the non math majors I had all A's until this class I did all of the required home work and still got a D.
Honestly!!! I had to take a Xanax before his exam. Lets put this way: the test itself was a booklet, like 5 pages long,3 matricis 3 word problems and a bunch of other stuff. Just feeling the thickness of the exam made me want to Increase my dosage of Xanax =)
He is not a nice person, nor is he interesting, nor does he teach, he only pretends too.
Worse instructor ever! Does not break it down for those non-math major students. Tests are as hard as trying to sing underwater. Grades like hell on it. Do not take him! Seriously!
he talks and writes in slow motion but he can teach real fast that u could have 5 sections of hw to do over the weekends. his tests are not hard..take off a lot of points on just little careless mistakes or misuse of the method...the most important thing on tests is make sure u know the name of the method...keep in mind that hw is important to him.
How can this guy teach math? His classes are are hard to pass. Only those who are math major are able to get through. He grade the test like hell and only pick those very hard problems that nobody can solve and stick them on the test. Most likely you be on your own since he will be very useless what so ever. Take anyone than this instructor!
God bless him, he understands math but he cannot teach it.
Very good professor, hard but very patient and if you need clarification on something, he will go out of his way to help you. His tests are not so easy but he gives you a lot of credit even if you got wrong answer, as long as you show that you understand problem. Take him to learn math, not just to pass the class.
His class is the worst of all. His test is as thick as a booklet. To make matters worst, he does not tell you when the test is. The tests are very difficult. He started teaching slow and speeds up in the end.
worst teacher ive ever had!!
Hogue is the worse math teacher in the entire universe! His tests are as hard as hell, too much homework, and by the way, he chose the hardest problems that nobody can do and place it on the test. he does not tell you when the test is until three days later when everyone get a panic attack. One sentence to describe him: He does not care about us.
OMG, THIS SO-CALL PROFESSOR JUST KILLED MY GPA WITH HIS TESTS!
He is a hard teacher. But he is a cool person. I liked that the homework was due on the day of the test. So I would cram it all the night before the test. It helped me study. I got a B.
The thing is that Hogue knows a lot about math and I respect him for being so knowledgeable but for students who hate math and aren't good at it, this professor will really hurt your grade. His tests are hard and he does pick out the most hardest questions. If you love math and are a math major, he's no problem. If not, avoid! Lots of word problems
he's a good teacher he explain things very clearly, but the tests are hard. you will never get A in that class no matter how hard you try. if you take him you migh have big chance to fail this class
very good at what he does but his test are crazy. they are about 25 problems long and very hard but he tells you if u dont understand a Q's on homework thatit will prob be on the test.
he has a lot of funny remarks, although I hate mate period, and had a hard time, I did learn and had fun listening to an older teacher crack silly one liners
His class is so difficult that the majority of the class cannot pass it. One or two students pass his class. WARNING: he is a hard grader. He check every single problem in the homework and his tests are like a BOOKLET. His tests are so thick and he does not curve tests. He grade the tests so hard. Seriously, he grades everything hard!
If you really want to learn math the right way, here is a suggestion: DO NOT TAKE HOGUE! Believe me, you will regret it when you fail his course. Almost everybody does fail his course! His exams are as thick as a book, does not tell you when the exams are scheduled earlier, does not curve your grade, and check every problem on your homework.
Do not take his class if you want to pass math! He grades so hard on every assignments and tests. His tests are like a booklet! He does not curve on tests and he checks every single problems on the homework. Most of the students in the class cannot pass!
Hogue is the worse math instructor ever. You will be better of if you take someone else which you can handle. Take him if your math skills are beyond advance. otherwise, DO NOT TAKE HIM!
i'm taking him for winter and it's very fast paced, obviously. he's very slow at first, but he soon expects you to learn the material on your own. he's corny and i dont enjoy math at all. however, i dont encourage taking him because he is not a very good teacher. an interesting person, but not a good teacher.
I thought he was a really cool person but when it comes to teaching, oh boy I have seen better! His clss is challenging. If you are weak at math, it's going to be hard on you. He is great for math majors but for those of us who does not like math but needs to take it, go to another instructor. I studied so hard and I passed with an average.
ridiculously sarcastic. he sort of expects you to know some of the "basic" material probably because he knows it like the back of his hand. he's like martin for french. probably a great advanced teacher, but a horrible beginner's teacher.
Professor Hogue's class is extremely diffucult. His tests are as thick as a booklet. He gives out so much homework that it takes more than an hour to do it each day! His tests are very difficult and he does not curve it. The majority of his class failed. I suggest you take someone else besides Professor Hogue!
This instructor grades hard on everything. Tests are thick as a booklet, he does no curve on tests. And he gives out alot of homework in one day! You should take him if you love math!
this math instructor is the worse of all. he gives you so much homework and only cherry pick the hardest problems which you cannot do and put them on the test. and he expects you do do them correctly! every wrong probem, he deducts a lots of points, necessary points to even get a D-. he will not tell you when the test are until three days before.
he cares about the students but his test are hard and his final, u don't want to take that because he makes all the problems in the final so hard their not even in the book.
He does not lecture all of the material but just little bits and pieces, he makes you feel dumb by the way he teaches. you have to learn on your own and are expected to know the hardest problems even though he hasnt lectured on them. I normally get straight A's and got a B. almost got an A on one test but i forgot to label by axis and got a low B
He gives hw like there is no tomorrow! Keep up with the sections assigned or you will fall behind. He's pretty good about helping, just go to his office hours and he'll tutor you. Overall he's a nice guy and his explanantions are pretty clear. Tests are pretty hard so don't slack off!
Hogue is the worse math teacher in PCC
Prof. Hogue cannot teach math!!! For those who are not good in math, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! His tests are are thick as a booklet, and almost 90% of the time, they are problems that are very difficult to solve. Also test on math vocabularies and definations, which are almost half the test grade. Does not tell you when the exams are until 3 days before.
The most horrible math instructor at Pasadena City College. DO NOT TAKE THIS INSTRUCTOR, UNLESS YOU ARE REALLY A MATH WIZARD! If not, then you are on your own in order to survive his class. 1/3 of all of this tests, are vocabulary related materials. Does not tell you when any of the tests are scheduled until three days before test day, SURPRISE!!
He is a good teacher but once I got home I had trouble with the work. It also seemed like most of the other students were having a hard time too. He gives a lot of homework!
he's nice guy... he don't mind to reschedule our math test because half of my class haven't totally understand the subject.. A LOT of homework.. should do it everyday because he collect it on test day... the test problem actually isn't so hard, but he gave SO MUCH problems on the exam so I didn't have time to check my answers..
he is the best teacher in the world. if u want to fail ur math class plz take his class. and enjoy ur math nightmare!!!
ALOT of homework and then the tests are twice as hard as the homework. he is pretty nice, but does not explain well. you think you understand until you get home. most of the class was having trouble. I had a B+ but the super hard final lowered me to a C...
HES THE WORSTMATH TEACHER EVER! HIS TESTS ARE 2 TIMES HARDER THAN THE HOMEWORK! HE LIKES TO WASTE TIME GRAPHING THE FUNCTIONS WITH MULTIPLE COLORS>< THE ONLY WAY TO GET AN A IN THIS CLASS IS TO DO ALL THE ODD PROBLEMS AS WELL AS THE EVEN ONES!! MY FALL 06 CLASS WAS IMBALANCE..3/4 OF THE CLASS HAD TAKEN CALCULUS BFORE..THEY STILL ENDED UP WITH A C/B
Super nice guy. Beautiful penmanship. Horrible math teacher. If you are up to teach yourself algebra, then awesome. Otherwise, keep looking guys.

his test is 2 times easier than homework. If you do your homwork well, you can easily to pass the test and eet A.I just don't like it because he asked the definition in test.Anyway he is the best teacher.
SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER HARD TEACHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VERY HARSH GRADING NO CURVE! TESTS ARE 10X HARDER THEN HOMEWORK AND VERY CONFUSING AND TRICKY... HOWEVER I LEARNED A LOT!!!!! BUT I WISH IT COULD HAVE BEEN FUN. ALL IN ALL GREAT TEACHER! BUT VERY HARD!
He's really nice and easy. You don't really do much in class. Just make sure you do your homeworks and you'll be fine. Homeworks are mostly online. You dont really need to use your books. He isn't hard nor anything. He's a funny guy as well.
This guy is not a good proffeser, even you know a lot, he will try to drop you! If you can get A, he will try to give you a B, if you can get a C or D, he will Fail you! So be carefull!!
He is a good person all the time but a prick in the tests. Unless you are only coming for fun, don't take him.
If you need a challenge to do your two hour test in one hour, you should take his class. His exams are for those who couldn't get into caltech but still need the same level training.
he was tough but I learned soo much . his explanations are clear. i think he might go a little crazy on the homework and tests but overall i enjoyed taking his class. I loved the challenge. if math is not your strongest subject, don't take him. but if your up for the challenge ,then go for it.
he's funny, this class made me laugh. too much hw though. tests too long. buying the book was pointless, you only buy it for the cd. what a rip off! i never even opened it. no calculators. i never saw him be mad at anyone. tear it up wed/thu/fri made me feel like i was in kindergarten again- but in a good way, cause they were a nice break
His teaching style is absoutly perfect, and tests are not that hard as long as you are doing your homework well enough. The most easiest one is final test because he asked most of them from previous test just different numbers. He used to ask trick two or three question on the test.If he doesn't ,everybody will get an A.
If you are doing all of your homework, you will get grade B.If you study a little more, you will definitely get A.Actually, he should ask more trick questions othewise everybody will get A.
Mr.Hogue was a nice professor, his writing and explain was very clearly. If you do all your HW didn't mean you can get the grade you want. His test was very very hard most of time.
good, patient teacher!
Very good professor, hard but very patient and if you need clarification on something, he will go out of his way to help you. LITERALLY! His tests are not so easy but he gives you a lot of credit even if you got wrong answer, as long as you show that you understand problem. Take him to learn math, not just to pass the class.
I should have looked at this website before I enrolled in his class. I have been a straight A student in math my whole life, but his tests were so hard that I had to drop his class. This class will haunt me for the rest of my life. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Great professor! Tries hard to help us understand concepts.
I love this teacher!! his explanations are clear and seems to really enjoy math.
A really good math teacher. Knows his stuff, teaches theory not just algorithms, so you get "why" not just "how". Makes the material accessible and clear. Tests are difficult/plus a lot of homework, but that is GOOD. Rather have a prof with high expectations than one who gives a free ride. No free ride here, wish I could have him for 131 next term!
OKAY..THIS TEACHER IS GREAT! VERY NICE MAN...EXTREMELY HELPFULL!!!
Professor Hogue is an extremely good teacher. He knows how to clarify things so you understand them and will help you with anything. He is really nice and funny. In this class you have to be dedicated and determined.
Very good teacher although tests are pretty hard. has a great way of explaining math. very organized.
Ignore the below comments - bc there's NO WAY u won't accel with Mr. Hogue. REALLY YOU HAVE TO TAKE THIS TEACHER! He has the funniest math songs 2 be just fun! If you have a ? He does anything, as many times as you need him to, so you as an individual will understand. I go gr8 in math now BECAUSE of Mr. Hogue as my 1st math teacher in college!!!!
dont be fooled by the tie and the song routine....still not able to teach.
This prof. demands perfection but he is not perfect either.
He's a fair grading teacher and is sometimes lenient. Pretty hard on tests, sometimes he'll give questions he went over only once in the class. The vocab he teaches is also useful in the math test. He'll even answer the stupidest of questions. He loves teaching, but hates cell phones going off. I got an A cause of hardwork, which you will need
prof. Hogue cannot teach math. DO NOT TAKE HIM His tests are very very long and almost 90% of the time, they are problems that are very difficult to solve. Vcabularies and definations are most of the test.
He is a great teacher IF you show interest in math... he is also very helpful during his office hours. People criticizing him are just mad because they could not handle high school level math! He teaches properly, tries to prepare you for higher level math...
This class is beginning algebra and not advanced math for scientists. hello!!!
he comes to class late, he teaches himself, he couldn't do some problems, he wastes the time for a single problem, he cannot teach math 5A..if you don't have any calculus background, don't take him, you'll get lost..and you don't learn anything from him.you learn by yourself..
Gets caught up with details and can not solve his own problems. He cares about appereances more than content. Stay away
dont take him unless u r a math genius
He talks with a southern accent sometimes because he's from the South! Don't buy the text book!. Houge is a wonderful teacher: He helps us with homework problems, Tells us what's on the test, and he sings and crack jokes. Make sure ur phone is on silent! He will make you Perform or Bring donuts to class on Fun on Fridays!
He's a nice and funny guy, but his teaching is awful. He gets carried away very easily. The tests are difficult with 30 or more q's!! sheesh! He isn't clear on most topics. He's better than other teachers at pcc, but certainly not the best. Try professor valentine.
I took his Math131 class last winter 2007 ,and it was hard. He is a good mathematician but not a good teacher. He said at the first day of class that the only people who are suppose to take his class during short intersessions are 1.) Determined,2.)Desperate and 3.)Gifted. Two thirds of the class drop-out or failed because the class went too fast .
I took him for the MathPath 125. He is not orgnized, doesn't follow the book, jumps all around, goes to quickly, he is funny but get distracted very easily by things that are not related to the class. His test are very hard. I do not recommend him as a teacher. Friday he like to bring games instead of giving a class.
challenging. Fantastic instructor for the sciences. If you have a weak ass major like PoliSci, Don't put yourself through his class. Overall, decent, quick and witty.
hard tests! i took calculus in high school, i got a 4 on the AP and still didnt get an A in his class. the whole class was always clueless and silent. he spent classtime drawing graphs on the board and explaining proofs not helpful
If your not good at math, dont take his class. Simply, he is hard because he teaches differently. He LOVES to proof thm. He can spend whole class to do proofs. If you really like math, you'll like what he does.Or, you'll just be LOST. Tests are hard and hard for new calc learners. If he didnt give the quiz to push my grade up, i'd have failed. -IC
Mr.Hogue is an excellent teacher for people majoring in the sciences. He has a solid method of teaching definitions to increase the students comprehension of the reasons that certain procedures function the way they do. People who complain about him do so because they aren't willing to put in the time or effort. Not for the lazy student.
I like fridays when he wears shorts and we play games in class.
love him when he slaps himself. hate him when he do the experience thingie. tests and quizzes are actually not that hard. loves to proof. he can spend the whole class time proofing the theorem. gives a bunch of homework. be prepared to sacrificed your weekends doing homework.
If you are thinking about taking his calculus class, I severely implore you to reconsider (unless you have mastered all math preceeding calc). Houge jets over material, typically focusing on theorems and proofs, and expects you to manipulate problems algebraically without any guidance from him. Tests are long and brutal and he doesn't curve.
Nice guy but doesn't really teach anything, just goes over homework problems. If you don't know anything about algebra 2 before you take the class well then, your screwed unless you work your ass off. All homework is done online. If you talk to him about how to raise your grade he'll just say "study harder."
He expects you to understand everything before class and before he explains lecture. "Study harder" is slogan.
For me he was very easy and explain the problems well but he do tend to expect you to know the stuff bu cause it was taught in high school. Overall he was a good teach if you listen a bit.
He is a great person, but not the best teacher. He thinks you should know it because you learned it in high school. Ugh not everyone just got out of high school. Also if we the material then why are we taking it with you? He is there for you during office hours if he isn't already with another student.
I tend to struggle with math, but professor Hogue makes things very clear. In total there's about 4 tests and no quizzes. Homework is 20% of the grade but you don't need MyMathLab which saves you $$. He takes time in helping students and is tolerant towards them. Definitely recommend!
Let me first say you should take this class if you are majoring in math/science for it will be extremely beneficial. If you are not (like myself), it is very difficult to pass. He does care about his students but sort of expects much detailed perfection at times. Expect homework, TONS, & TO WORK HARD FOR a C or BETTER.
He is an excellent Professor, yes is very hard to pass but you will learn. Recommended for the science guys)
awful linear algebra lecture, collects hw everyday day and does not except late hw for any reason. get ready to spend time leaning the abstract nature of linear algebra by your self.
He is a Good professor, but his test are extremely hard. The homework and his lectures are too easy compared to the test questions. He teaches at a higher level than the class you are taking. He loves word problems so if you are not good with word problems, do not take him. You also need flash card for his class. You will be tested on vocabulary.
Teaching is very easy but when it comes to the quizes i feel like i never learned a thing testing is hard.
The first hour of class is going over homework. The rest is a lecture that does nothing for you when it comes time to take the exam. He jumps around from chapter to chapter and confuses you. Assigns a ton of hw! Basically class is a big waste of time and exams are super hard because you had to teach yourself everything! DO NOT TAKE HIM.
You have to bust your butt off to get an C. A lot a lot a lot of homework which is required to understand the material. I suggest independent study to ACTUALLY understand the class and test. He aims at all perspectives but rather taught his way. But still is all over the place.
I took him for mathpath 131/7A. This professor knows math:). He is very good at challenging students. I learned a lot in his class and whatever other people say he is very good at teaching. I will recommend him for people who wants to learn. p.s: Although I'm not gifted at math I got A's for both classes through hardworking.
Professor Hogue should be as respected as other professors in other major universities. He is very difficult when it comes down to exams, but his lectures are very informative. The key is to practice, practice, practice. Lots of homework. Very caring and will go over questions if you have any. Pay attention to the lectures and do the homework.
As a STEM major who's always aced math, I can honestly say that I have never been more frustrated in a class. Lots of HW, NO exam reviews!, no curves/drops. He is a LOVELY person who is very smart but not a good teacher. Avoid if you want to learn real math and earn higher than a B or C. I am not a lazy student but sadly this class was a time waste
I took him for Math Path 125/131 and really glad I did. I'm not good at math and I did struggle but that's my doing. He assigns plenty of homework that will end up in the exams. That is what math path is. You are warned that you will be living, eating, and breathing math. He takes his time with word problems and uses a great method to remember math
He is the one you MUST take for your all math classes. I took him for math path 125/131, and now I wanna take him for all my maths up to math 55! He explains everything over and over and over again, and he makes sure you understand the concept not memorize it. You are your grade, but he is always there to help you. He is so nice, he understands.
He never does curve!I was the top in the class, but I found I might got C or B in this class before final, so I gave up and chose to retake it. His calculating was even worse than mine. He spent a lot of time solving some problems in class but found mistakes inside after he checked the answer. He never cared your grade.
Professor Hogue is is quick and informative in answering questions. He's comfortable with the material and can explain difficult concepts with clarity and ease. His grading is refined and he does not nit-pick over smaIl algebraic errors. There is a difference between material difficulty and bad teaching. Professor Hogue was great.
You must complete the assignments with less then 3 undone problems or receive a zero regardless of how many you did. 1 to 3 point each assignment. Exam will have problems youve done only once on homework and you have to use his methods not the book or its a fail regardless if the answer is correct. 1hr of hw review/1 hour of lec. on new material.
1) tests for mastery, not a review of HW or other known problems. 2) doesn't drop anything, or curve anything. 3) Insanely long, personalized tests designed to see if you can spot the 'trick' to each concept. 4) no extra credit. 5) only graded on tests, remaining 15% HW Wants to see students camped out for office hours. Doesn't use canvas well.
Linear Algebra is a special kind of hell that should be reserved only for the worst of humanity. Good luck. You'll need it. Hogue might seem scary at first, but don't let him faze you. He's patient, brilliant, helpful when you proactively seek it, reasonable and fair about exams (ie exam proofs will be hw proofs) and is very passionate about math.
Don't take him. He doesn't curve and his tests are super hard. The only good thing about this guy is that he really puts you in a situation where you need to master the material if you want to pass. I've learned more math in this class than I have in any other class. Take his class if you want to learn Calculus, but not if you want a good grade.
Prof Hogue, is a great person however I would not recommend him to someone who struggles with Math. Although he is a great instructor for science and math majors. Exams pretty much make up your entire grade.
I have always been in honors math classes and even AP when it was available. This class kicked my butt. He's a nice guy, but as a teacher he was not helpful (to me anyway). He expects you to know everything too quickly. It's very overwhelming and extremely easy to fall behind. Homework is basically useless, grade wise. Tests are extremely important
Professor Hogue is a great guy, however I dont think he prepares you enough for his tests. The homework isnt worth much, fail the tests you fail the class. The classroom started out full and by the end of the semester, there were no more than 15 students. His teaching style is nice, but I think itll help to give out weekly quizzes to prepare.
Math demon! IF you have 3 or more problems unfinished out of 40 problems thats a zero for the assignment. Exams are full of surprises costume made by him. You'll have exam problems he covered once but there will be 3 of them. If you must take a math course I would go to another school or wait for the next semester. Watch the W date to save GPA.
He gives great feedback as long as you go to his office hours. He is very caring and open-minded. It's a challenge for him to teach linear algebra in Dr. Socrates' way because he was not taught this way. I am glad that I can learn two different ways of seeing linear algebra because he provides his way and Dr. Socrates' way, and let us choose ours.
The effort you give in the class is the grade you're going to get! Visit his office hours if you're struggling, he is more than happy to help. He will not hesitate to breakdown an example in the lecture for you to understand. Review your exams and then go to him for help on missed problems. Always ask why if you can't understand something.
Great professor and smart. He wants self sufficiency ; meaning he wants you to teach yourself and whatever you dont understand, he will explain. Asked many questions ,and students would stay quiet. He started calculus first day in Algebra class. He treated the class like we all were at the same level as him. I dropped his class.
Emergency? Can't come to class or turn in hw? Tells you to plan in advance, how is someone able to plan an emergency? Doesn't accept email submissions for these situations. You get 0%. If you don't grasp the info he says 'figure it out' - cocky, brags about his 'prestigious' polytech education. TONS of hw 200+ questions. 3 wrong? 0% - STAY AWAY!
He taught me one of the most useful tools in academics, which is: Treat your class like it is your JOB. You always go to work at the time you're scheduled, any tasks at your job must be completed and with a certain degree of professionalism, you treat your boss with respect. So do the same with your professors. Recommend highly for adult students.
WARNING DO NOT TAKE THIS PIECE OF WORK. He assigns at least 3 long ass sections of homework each day. The whole class is him going over 3 homework problems, redoing them, then 20 minutes of lecture. I took math 131 accelerated, 16 out of 40 people passed, math 7a 5 out of 40 people passed. The only people passed are people in lower courses.
If you miss class for more than two days it's basically over for you. Late work isn't allowed, and HW barely counts towards your grade. Majority of the grade is made up from the tests but the grading isn't transparent. If you have any emergency or cannot make it to class to take a test it's over. Does not curve (unless you're 1 or 2 points behind).
I took him a while ago for 131/7a and got a good grade in his class. As people mentioned his tests are very tough, and there is a lot of homework. Those people who want to learn math and transfer to good schools, please take him it's a good experience. As his former student and now as a UC Berkeley student I assure you his class is very easy.
Lecture is very clear and sometimes interesting. He does not accept late homework. I had 4 midterm exams and one final exam this semester. Make sure you take notes and review ontime. He does not curve the grade of your exam, but he does round up grade for your final grade like if you get 89.5%, I think you will be A.
Man, how do I say this, he is a pretty good professor, his lecture is pretty good, but seriously, if you planning on getting a good grade (A), and you are not a genius or tryhard, dont take him. Non stopping homework and tests are way too hard than you expect, homework are useless btw, he spends so many times go over homework. TRY PICK OTHER PROF!
No clear lectures; lots of book-unrelated sources that you have to know because he decided to teach you extra stuffs that HE considered "important;" NO study sheets, won't reply your e-mail what-so-ever, no extra credits, terrible instructor, won't recommand.
He is a good professor who has years of experience in teaching with an additional Engineering and Science background. Recommended for STEM majors. He always welcomes to explain to your questions about homework and lectures. Extra credit for class activities. He explains his lectures in detail to help you to remember the basic fundamental of math.
He is a master in how to approach Calculus Problems. Although the lecturing for each topic takes long, he explains step-by-step in detail with sketching. All of his lectures help you a lot to understand clearly about Calculus.
JUST SKIP HIM!!!!! HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!!!!
He is such a gentleman who loves math. His lectures are well-structured. I learned so much from his course. YES, the tests are heavy, but the professor offers enough homework to prepare for it giving grades for each work. What I really liked about him was that he was always open to my questions! He is eager to satisfy your curiosity!
Knowledgeable & passionate about math. Expects a lot from his students but also is clear on his expectations from the beginning. A good understanding of the prerequisite math skills is a must and he expects that you are fluent in those skills. Holds many office hours to help students in need. Does not allow notes so prepare to memorize many proofs.
Took him for Math 10 over the summer. Cool guy, but barely gave feedback and did almost the bare minimum. Lectures are confusing and make little sense. Very stingy when grading tests and expects you to remember random details he said in class. Had no office hours and was hard to reach. Be ready to do poorly.
EXTREMELY poor class pacing. Expect video lectures to be assigned as "hw" on ALL no-class days & weekends bc he can never finish the material on time! 15-min tangents during lecture; watch recording at 2x speed. Unreasonable exam Qs for 3 hrs. HW graded on completion & no full ans key to check. Class average was F on 2/3 exams; no curve. Good luck.
Average class grade: F. Crammed more material the week before finals than any other week. Poor planner. No office hours. No practice exams, book Q's unlike exam Q's. No solution sheet to tests&HW. Test questions could be unreasonably tedious in arithmetic which doesn't test knowledge but just how accurate of a calculator you are. Good luck!
just avoid the professor. Lectures are not related to test questions. No feedback from test.
It's really difficult to get A. It is really hard to do homework after his class. I learned from YouTube and tutor. Also I did lots of classes. The only reason made me get B is that this teacher won't reply your emails. He forgot to replace my technically mess test which he said would be replaced.
He is very caring, funny and a good teacher. Calculus is a hard subject so no matter which teacher you take you still have to work hard and study to get a good grade. His tests are pretty hard but hes very approachable but strict about tests. He can get side tracked easily during class.
He never does any reviews or discusses what will be on the exams. Homework was graded as only worth 3 points, even if the homework was over 50 problems. He never replies back to emails. The book he uses is not the same book he recommends to buy on the syllabus. Grades are exam-heavy. He does no tests or quizzes only exams boost grades.
Worst professor I have ever had at PCC. Doesn't care, spends most of his time in lecture talking about himself or things not related to course. No feedback. No response to emails or messages on canvas. So much homework that is worth 2-3 points. Exams are what determine grade. None of the homework questions are related to exam questions.
My only complaint is the lectures-too much time on basics-Prf. Hogue goes extra to explain very basic concepts from Pre-Cal. For that, we run out of time for further Calc details. His lecs are like for high schoolers, yet exams for senior students. Other than that, he made calculus fun and easy to understand. Go office hrs for homework as it helps.
Very difficult professor. Merciless grader. Doesn't provide solutions to the exam, no study guides, little to no help on homeworks/exams. His way, or the highway. HW Questions very different from Exam Questions. Save your grades, stay away !
If you are planning to take math major he is definitely the professor you want. He taught beyond the textbook and always tried to inspire you to think in a mathematic way. This is very helpful for further math studying. However this makes his classes very hard to get an A and you need to do lots of homework practice for exams. But it is worth it.
You gotta do the hw. He only uses problems from the hw. On exams label all graphs and give scales show all steps.
