Archaeology God, take all his classes, adorable too!
Great teacher. Had him for summer school and made the time go right by!
how i got a B is beyond me, should have had an A, easy, VERY boring
Easy Class, GPA booster
makes realics intersting. Fun class
Not the most interesting class. Don't buy book--test come from class notes. Gives curves on test to make sure the class average on test is a 75. Nice guy, but the subject is boring.
HE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. HE IS VERY UNOGANIZED. EVERYONE TOLD ME TO TAKE THIS CLASS, THAT I WOULD HAVE A BLAST. ANTHROPOLOGY HAS SO MANY RESOURCES ONE CAN PULL FROM IT. HE USES NONE!!!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean, you cant blame him, Anthropology is boring but he's really nice and he tries to make class fun. Take his class. He's easy.
Boring class but he gets you through it. I got a B but I looked at the clock constantly. Funny at times, stutters. Overall: easy but be prepared to be bored.
Condensending to students, talks down to you. Majority failing. Not helpful
Tests are difficult if you do not study and come completely from notes in class. Overall a very good teacher and grades are fair.
a good choice for anthropology -- study just a little and you should do ok - Not much work other than tests - easy projects
Boring, stutters and tries to be funny. Other than that projects are easy, just study notes for tests and don't read book--I still made a B.
Very nice professor, though a little boring. Don't bother buying any of the books, just take good notes, study, and you will get at least a B for sure. If you have any problems he will be nice about it and help you out.
Take this class for easy A or B if you are the kind of person who goes to class everyday. People who failed didn't go to class. Take notes and don't buy book. Curves so class average on test is 75. Gives extra credit. Nice guy, boring class.
Extremely boring class. Highly unorganized lecture. If you can sort out the mess, you should do okay. Most importantly, very boring. He never shuts up, talks through the bell.
Ugh, I did not enjoy this class at all! Very boring and teacher paces back and forth the whole class! Final is very easy, but the other tests are relatively difficult unless you have a nack for anthropology.
If you get Houck on his speciality, Mesoamerican Anth. and there is no stopping him. Extremely intresting lectures and class. Highly reccomended
Teacher is very very boring. I got a good grade but hated the class bc of how boring it was.
Boring! Class is extremely boring. Teacher is all about facts. Class is not hard but it is a struggle to stay awake. Boriness unmotivates you from attending. Can pass if you attend every class and take every note and study for a week before the test.
Great teacher for subject that can be boring to most. No attendence, clear multichoice tests, extra credit chances.
I dont know what these people were thinking. Maybe they are all anthropology majors, but I had to take this course. I knew nothing about anthropology when I started, and I know nothing about it now. This could be the most boring lecture of all time.
He is very unorganized!! Lectures leave you thinking "what the..." Test are entirely from notes, quizes are from assigned readings-I didnt buy the bookand still made an A in the class--he gives study guides which help alot! Honestly-take someone
I was the only one that wasn't high that got a B. ARGH! He is a wonderful MAN but not a wonderfull teacher :( he sucks as a teacher.
BEWARE, lectures are extremely boring, however they are exactly what's on the quizzes and exams. Reading is beneficial, but not neccesary.
horrible waste of time.cant even understand him when he talks..i dont know anyone who made above a D. tests are made to confuse you dont take the class unless you like memorizing text books
awesome teacher, you will learn a lot, interesting
terrible. very boring
So boring...and very hard tests!! Don't take this class...unless you like being bored to tears!!
I hate this class. It is so boring. You have to take something else to do to keep yourself awake. Cannot understand him and cannot follow his notes. Get another professor!!
Funny guy but he can be a little hard to follow. You have to memorize a lot about timelines and time periods. Quizzes cover things he hasn't gone over yet in class. If you dont like basic Anthro you'll be bored, otherwise the class ain't too bad.
Bless his heart. He means well, very sweet man. Just not the best teacher. If you sit in the front and pay attention and go to all the lectures, you could get an A. He's just kind of hard to follow sometimes. But he is a very nice man.
one word...HORRIBLE!!!!!! RUN AWAY...FAST!!!!!!...no, Seriously!
Houck is the man. He is interesting and intelligent. His lectures do tend to draw on... but it's easy to get him off topic!
If you go to class, do the readings and prepare for his quizes you will do well. He is an extremely nice man, but you have to work very hard to get a good grade. He is a bit boring.... my advice would be to tkae his 50 min classes rather than hour and 20.
He is a really nice dude. Keep up with the reading b/c there are pop quizzes. There is a lot of reading but the class is fairly easy as long as you keep up. Tests are easy as long as you do the study gui
This is the worst class I bet I have ever taken. He is so boring & his lectures go on and on. I advise you NOT to register for him.
woohaa sooo boring dont take this unless you have to have it or you really like this stuff, the test are hard as crap. it is everyone that i know worst class
I seriously would rather stab myself in the face then go to this class. It is so hard and soooooo boring. STAY AWAY!!! Get a new teacher!!!
hard as crap. extremely boring. the temptation to skip this class is very strong. he doesnt take attendence so skip all you want. not like youre gonna pass it even if you showed up.
Houck is a really nice man. His classes are boring...great time to nap. Sometimes he is very hard to follow, can't take notes on his lectures, he just stands in the front and paces writing random things on the board. Funny guys though. Don't take his class if you have another option.
I read every chapter and every page ever assigned and im still failing this class..the tests have nothing to do with the reading.. so buying the book is a waste of money and time. he takes forever to email you back and everyone i know is failing.. the class average is an F
I don't know what the big deal is. I expected the worse, but this class was not bad. Go to class, take good notes, read the book and you will do fine.
The lectures are a little boring, I thought but that's probably just b/c I hated the subject. Go to class and write down what he says in lecture b/c that's what his tests come from almost verbatim. He's more than willing to answer any questions and he gives a rocking study guide before tests.
Can we say BOOOOORRRRIIIINNNNGGGGG. And damnit this class was supposed to be easy, how'd I end up with a C, blah.
one of the most boring classes I could have ever imagined! His pacing back in forth and the sweaking of his shoes could drive anyone insane! Tried to keep and open mind to find something positive about this class...but I just can't find it. Save yourself from the misery and don't take him!
Anyone who says Dr. Houck is boring or that his class is too hard is an idiot. Just read the material, show up to class, take good notes, and YOU'LL BE FINE. He's a cool guy, and if you like the subject matter you should enjoy the class. I'm in his anthro class right now, and I really like it.
not a bad class. it was boring from time to time, but not hard to pass. that is if you study some.
I loved Houck. He was a hoot. He's your typical archaeologist... scruffy and grumpy. You have to do the work.. read.. but you should have to do that always. I thought the material was fascinating.. and I'm still the only one in my family who knows how we're all related (1st cousin once removed, 2nd cousin...) give him a try! :D
lecture is VERY boring. go to class, try and take notes. He is usually all over the place which makes it hard to take notes. The tests were harder than I thought they should be... he does give study guides though. (very helpful IF you can find the answers...) the book wasnt much help either.
very easy professor if you go to class and take good notes. very wise and knows what hes talking about.
This class was pretty easy like everyone has said. You will need to at least skim over the chapters in the book and take good notes. Houck is interesting and boring at times but I've learned a lot. He gives good study guides also.
He is a good teacher if you go to class and listen. I enjoyed his teaching style and "humor" he threw in every now and again. If you pay attention and use the study guides(I suggest going to review sessions as well) you will pass this class. Not too hard, just involves listening skills.
BORING! The man straight up put me to sleep! Sorry, anthropology may seem interesting to some people, but it was like a power nap for me! His tests come straight from the notes, rarely takes attendance, but sometimes when he does he gives extra credit.
Class is not nearly as bad as I thgoht based on previous reviews. If you read and come to class, exams are easy. Easy straightforward professor
I loved his class. He's pretty easy going and his tests are straightforward. Sometimes he gets boring, but for the most part, his class was easy and fun.
great guy, i really enjoyed his class and i will def. miss him. test arent that hard, hes funny and laidback. take his course whether you like anthropology or not!
Good teacher for INTL senior seminar. Dr. Houck is funny. He also extended deadline after deadline for papers. Lives in his office waiting for students to walk in. I was so stressed that I was going to do back but got a B.
this class is worth taking whether or not you're interested in anthropology...tests are tricky..he doesn't take attendance every day..but you need to go to class...he makes it as interesting as possible
Not the most exciting material to teach he does a good job of making it interesting. Not a stickler on attendence. Tests are not super hard. I say give the class a shot if you need the credit.
Insanely nice guy, a welcome change at UNCC. Laid back, very helpful, willing to go out of his way to help you out with anything. I found the class to be really easy, although yes, he can be a bit boring. Definitely recommended.
Humorous and laid back, but sometimes boring. Make sure you do the reading. His tests often cover things not discussed in class. He also loves trick questions--the kind where more than one answer seems to be the right answer.
Very laid-back, funny guy. Class was taught at the level that it should be taught - 1000 level. I recommend him and I will take him for the Senior Seminar! Just stick to the reading and there's no way to fail.
His lectures are SO boring... He makes jokes occassionally, but his sense of humor isn't that keen. No point in going to class as long as you get the study guide and look up the definitions in your book. His tests are multiple choice, with a lot of grey area... But, he does offer extra credit and a Kinship project that is an easy A.
He is a very laid back individual. Class is sometimes boring but he does his best to make it the best it can be. Quizzes every other week, pretty easy. Tests can be difficult but he curves majorly and then there is also kinship project and extra credit
Dr. Houck is a nice guy who knows his stuff. The people that didn't like him are the ones that didn't go to class and didn't study. Its not the easiest class and you will be tempted to fall asleep but if you go to class and study for quizzes/tests you'll be fine. Read the book, its a must for quizzes.
He walks back and forth the whole class time(which is distracting), his quizzes are easy if you come to class, but his tests are killer and you have to read the book very closely! If your reallllly interested in Anthropology then take his class, but if you prefer to not hear your teacher cursing then don't take the class!
Whew im sorry, but after reading his reviews i thought i was going to like him & let me tell you...he is TOUGH! He is nice but its hard to get through his whole lecture, and after studying all week, reading everything, didn't help at all! So i would advice you to avoid his class at all cost. I have had a 3.5 gpa until his class...
Great teacher. I loved going to his lectures. I thought he was engaging and the class was interesting. His tests are from the notes and the reading, so be sure to study your tail feather off.
Before I took this class I had an interest in archaeology but not anynore bc his class is boring!!! Do not take his class
Do not take this class unless you love Anthropology. You must take extremely detailed notes and remember dates and places off the top of your head. If you can do this then the class is for you. The test are super hard and alot of it is memorization of dates and places. Then he expects you to write an eight page paper with no real direction.
Good professor. Tries to inject some humor into the lecture; may not always succeed, but it still makes things more fun. Tests are not hard but you will need to actually know the material. Lectures and reading are interesting provided you have at least a little interest in the topic.
His class was very easy. I enjoyed listening to his lectures. Honestly all you have to do is take good notes and read the book. It couldn't be any easier!! Easy A
He is a really nice guy.. But its very easy to not follow what he is saying becuase he is always going off on tangents..It's hard to decipher if he is talking about something meaningless or something important
Very nice guy! Gives easy extra credit and extra points on tests. Read the book and take notes that's where all the questions for tests and quizzes will be. Go to class and you'll be fine!
He's a really good guy, but not as a teacher. Reading the book is a waste of time, you have to go to class. He doesn't use powerpoint, just kind of rambles on and on which makes it hard to pay attention to him. He's very knowledgable and his stories about his career are usually interesting.
Dr. Houck is a great man! He makes Anthropology a very interesting subject. He is funny and so willing to help those in need. You should definitely go to class, even though attendance is not taken, because the notes are very important to passing tests! Class is worth while and highly recommended.
Houck is great. He is extremely easy to get in touch with. You do need to show up for his class because his tests are based on the lectures. Tests were easy for me because i showed up. Extremely knowledgeable i used what i learned in his class to argue with another teacher about her being extremely wrong. Tests count for most of the final grade.
Interesting class. Professor is very fair. Gives extra credit. Gets sidetracked during discussion but interesting stories.
Dr. Houck is 1 of the best teachers at UNCC. He is very intelligent, he makes the class seem less like a class and more like a casual discussion, he is always available to discuss issues you may have with the class or topic, I didnt need the book, notes are sufficient. EZ class, just listen and take note of important stuff (he will tell u if it is)
I actually have had this professor twice now and he's AWESOME !! Never have had another teacher in campus want to help students out so much. He's really interesting and knows his material. Always comes prepared for lectures. Class is not mandatory, but would make your life easier. Just take notes, try not to nap, and you're golden !!
Go to class, participate, keep up the reading and you can get good grades. He is tough of the research and writing grades. Had him for two classes, enjoyed them both.
Had him both for INTL 1101 and 3136. He really is one of the best prof at uncc. Very helpful and gives out study guides before exams.
Seems like a cool prof but everything he talked about never seemed relevant to the test. His lectures came from his iPad, and he seemed to drift off into stories alot. Make sure your up to date with current issues when taking his class, it'll help you out. Class was boring, he can get really monotone honestly.
He is a good professor, but you have to attend class if you want to pass cause his notes are on his ipad, and he doesnt project them to you. If you go to him or text him he is more than willing to help! He's pretty chill, just make sure you read the book and GO TO CLASS.
Nice guy, knew his stuff, but was a horrible teacher. He was never concise of when to take notes. Rambled a lot. He never gave 100..told me that "only god is perfect." Overall, nice guy but not an effective teacher at all.
Dr. Houck is the best. Knows his material like crazy. very helpful and cool prof. always want to be in his class.
2 exams + final, 1 project, 3 homework essays. Takes attendance randomly, but exams are mostly based on lecture, so you should go regardless. Textbook unnecessary. Houck is VERY knowledgeable and funny to boot. Sometimes he rambles a bit, but it's always on topic and usually pretty interesting.
He is great and response to emails pretty fast. Very knowledgeable! I took his online class in summer, its a lot of work but if you study the book and reading assignments you will do great!
This class is pretty easy if you come to class and take notes. The discussion posts get annoying but not too bad. He tries to make lectures interesting. Fairly easy class.
This course is difficult in and of itself due to you having to write a 20-page paper. However, this professor gives you all the info you need and helps keep you going throughout the semester without procrastinating too much. He gives you necessary info on paper format and does individual meetings to understand what content you need to focus on.
Okay so here is the thing. If you want to pass then you really actually have to work, he is definitely one of those professors that you will never receive a 100 in anything, it's just him but you can still get an A. You just HAVE to read for the quizzes and take notes and do the exam study guides!! They are seriously life savors!
Dr. Houck is very approachable and eager to help you. Attendance is not mandatory but his lectures are very useful so I recommend attending every class. *Very* lenient with accepting late work.
Dr. Houck is a very good lecturer, he makes the course material easy to understand and interesting. I learned a lot in his class as he is engaging with what he's teaching. The tests aren't hard if you study, the you'll get good grades on the discussion posts even will small effort, and the online quizzes are simple a-la courtesy of quizlet.
He just goes on and on talking about the topic if no one stops him with questions. Its kinda bored sometimes and makes me sleepy lol. But i have taken him so many time since is an easy class.
Summer online class. Homework every day on weekdays, though that's pretty standard. Quiz answers usually lifted word for word out of the textbook, so MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A COPY. Discussions are graded mostly for effort, so just put some thought into them and you'll be good. Gave out his cell number to students, and replied to email within the hour.
Really knowledgeable. Tough grader - no 100 was ever given on any assignment, but plenty of 97s. Lots of reading but you will learn a ton. He is VERY lenient on late work.
Great teacher! Pretty lenient with assignments, gives good lectures. His discussions on Canvas are pretty interesting. I would highly recommend him. :-)
For a gen-ed class, prof did an amazing job at making it a little less painful. The material is boring and tough to understand, but his assignments were generally easy: discussion boards, a few infographics, and txt reading quizzes (that are on Quizlet). Prof is a very nice man and very funny! Just try your best and he will give you a decent grade.
Dr. Houck is a solid lecturer and clear/fair grader. Be ready for the tests, they account for most of your grade. But as long as you study, you should ace them.
an easy, elective class!!!
Dr. Houck was a wonderful professor. He made his material easy to understand, and every assignment had very clear and easy to follow guidelines. He cracked the best dad jokes, and his class was very pleasant to be in. I would take his class again without hesitation.
I loved this class. You are mostly graded on discussion posts (which are easy if you do the reading & go to class) & the exams. We had about 4 exams counting the final. Attendance isn't required but his lectures are interesting and help a lot to understand the boring content. He loves dad jokes too. Very understanding professor & overall cool guy.
Get ready to READ and WRITE for this class. I wouldn't say that the assignments and test are hard as long as you do the readings on time. You're averaging around 50-70 pages of readings per week, which may not be much but each pages are so long. It's just way too much info when exams come around. I'm not a fan of his lectures, but he's nice
Dr. Houck Is an amazing professor. His lectures do tend to get boring but they are very informative. He doesn't give too much HW, just a couple of discussion boards, infographic, and quizzes. There were 2 tests and 1 final which were all taken online. Take notes during lectures because these do appear on tests
Dr. Houck is a caring professor. I have ideas that differ w/some of his & he shows respect. His quizzes are hard, so I had to know the material. I took global honors & he was helpful w/my semester long paper. He is chill & easy to get along with. Go to him if you need help. Don't wait until the end of the semester. Work hard & you'll do well!
Dr. Houck is great, he's the main reason I majored in INTL. He goes way out of his way to help and to be accessible outside class, and his classes are always interesting and entertaining. He's got a great style in class, informal yet teaches you what you need to know, and keeps things interesting. Take his classes, you'll be glad you did.
Love Professor Houck in general! He's a great professor and easily accessible outside of class. Just be fully prepared to read a lot. He doesn't give 100% on anything and he made that clear in the beginning of the semester. His grading can be tough and based off of opinion. GO TO CLASS. Due dates can be tight but he is flexible with extensions
Houck is obviously very passionate about his subject, but has a tendency to ramble during lectures. His assignments are mostly weekly discussions and he's not that tough a grader, so the exams are what will likely make or break your entire grade as they are each worth 20%. So MAKE SURE TO STUDY and don't just focus on what's on his study guides.
Pretty good professor. Lenient with late work, but this class is test heavy (3 tests worth 20% each) and requires a lot of reading. Lectures can tend to get a bit boring, but an interesting class regardless!
Professor Houck is a great professor who genuinely cares about his students. He offers extra credit opportunities and is very accessible outside of class, making it easy to get help when needed.
Professor Houcks will talk for the whole class and you should take notes he provides on the slide because he does not have his lecture slides in Canvas. There isn't much work other than some chapter quizzes and weekly discussions. He seems pretty chill and will hold exams online.
Very long very boring lectures. Puts his own political beliefs into his lectures. Three essays over the semester. Weekly discussion posts and reading quizzes. Online tests. I wouldn't take him again even though the class is easy because of how boring it is.
Dr. Houck is a great professor. His lectures are interesting and include on-going political events, but doesn't push on your own beliefs. Although attendance isn't mandatory, he doesn't post the lecture slides on Canvas. There are quizzes, 3 essays, discussion posts, and 3 exams throughout the semester. They are manageable and don't overlap.
His lecture's are SOOO boring omg. Like I physically cannot. I was done by day one. He doesn't project/use a mic. Rather, it feels like he's having an ongoing discussion with himself and even LAUGHS at his own jokes (it's actually a bit funny/sad ngl). Thank God attendance is mandatory + everything's online, including exams. Easy A +.
This is an easy class for the gen ed requirement. All the tests + final are online, do with that as you will. As long as you know basic-intermediate levels of history, you don't really need to attend as you will know the stuff already. I get why the lectures kind of drag on, for a gen ed you need to pace for the slowest people in the class.
lectures are long, all work is online including exams, weekly Packbacks graded (never close still get full credit), 3 deep dive essays (grading is not too harsh), chapter quizzes (online, super easy, about 10 questions, time limit close on deadline and don't open again) very easy A
Prof. Houck is easy to talk to. Only annoying thing were the Packbacks. 1-2 per week w/ a reading quiz or 2. Essays graded with AI. Lectures are kinda boring, but seriously GO TO HIS CLASSES because the stuff he says are on the test. Also-- read the book, that's on tests too. I got by without reading the other stuff he assigns :p
Overall not a bad class or professor. All exams were online and pretty easy. Attendance is not mandatory as he just talks the whole time, but he does not post slides so keep that in mind.
Lectures are long and can tend to doze off but as long as you pay attention and make quizlets your fine for tests. Discussion questions and essays are actually pretty captivating and aren't super hard. Attendance isn't mandatory at all but If you study the textbook and make notes you should be totally fine.
Amazing professor, very passionate about the class. Homework was just discussion boards which were extremely easy. Exams are online no lockdown browser, extremely easy exams if you actually read and pay attention. Loved this professor
