Great Teacher, very entertaining
spews mindless liberal propaganda enemy of the truth sophist
excellent speaker, interesting lectures, funny... one of the COOL teachers!!
The Greatest most enlightening professor i've ever had!
A great teacher not afraid to say unpopular things
Agree with him or don't, Chuck is an essential part of the UO experience.
Interesting guy, but often blabs on too much (i.e. 30 min) about current events that have no relevance to the class curriculum.
very biased about information and its presentation, hard to meet with, hard tests, you have to do all the reading and attend all lectures (and stay awake) to do well.
Don't buy everything he tells you. He likes to say "In fact..." when what proceeds is not actually a "fact" at all. Pay attention for this. Just irritating. And I'm a liberal.
One of the best classes that I've taken at the UofO. Everyone should take this class.
The most inspirational teacher I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. Keep up the Good Fight!
I thought he was kind of a jerk to a lot of the people in the class. If they had an opinion that differed from his, he didn't even care to hear it. I wasn't impressed at all. I too am a liberal...
the most passionate professor you will ever take a class from @ the UO. his highly leftist opinions are one-sided, but like it or not, they are mostly all true. his motivation for teaching derives from his desire for students to know the truth.
Chuck is a very stimulating teacher.
Wonderful teacher- both haws a passion for what he is talking about and cares about people in general. I had no problem doing well in his class. Just know that Chuck will say his opinions and pose them as fact,
Chuck teaches a fun course that rather than focusing on a grade he focus more on I guess "conciousness raising" and at some point decided his university classes were the perfect venue for such course of action
Best teacher I have ever had! Very inspiring. It is funny to see the sorority/fraternatiy members freaking our because their daddy's taught them something very different about american society.. definatly a wake-up call for many young minds!
If you don't mind hearing a bitter Canadian complain about the US for half of the class, and then spend the other half talking about himself while trying to relate to sociology, take one of his classes!
He is the cool Pirate man...inside joke. but no really his class is one you will not fall asleep in ever!rock on Mr Hunt!
i didn't find him all that interesting, he just rants. you'll do fine on exams if you paid attention and his final is easy if you know how to memorize.

Thoroughly bad professor. He is unable to get through a class without ranting about anything, and really doesn't make the class all that bearable. Quite simply, he needs to be put out to pasture.
Fun class! Even more liberal than me, which is always nice. Funny to see him argue with all the preppy kids till they're blue in the face. His class really inspired me to do more in the world about what I believe.
entertaining and easy
Chuck was not the best teacher I've had, but he is sending a much needed message to all the conservative tools. He's also entertaining and had a really good guest speaker come in.
Chuck is a terrific teacher. He is very passionate about what he teaches and is always willing to go the extra mile for his students. While it's true he does interject his opinion into issues, I feel this is being honest on his part, as he tells you ahead of time what his bias is, rather than keeping it masked.
Taking a class with chuck is like riding on a roller coaster. I still remember the day one of his GTF's came up to me (right befor a test) to let me know the CIA was watching me. LOL. So keep your eyes open learn and enjoy.
This guy is Amazing...he really opened my eyes to alot of issues, that had gone unnoticed to me.

best darn teacher i ever had.
Worst teacher I've ever had!!!! Avoid "chuck" at all costs. Ignorant liberal like most people at UO.
If you want to hear crazy conspiracy theories pushed on you as fact, or if you just want to see a bunch of freshmen who can't think for themselves, take this class and listen to the idiots rave about "having their eyes opened"!
He could kick any conservative in the a**. I thought he was amazing. The quizzes were a little confusing, but the information he gives is totally worth it. He will open your eyes.
He'll open your eyes...if your unable to think for yourself. Grow a brain and don't think the morons teaching classes know everything, especially a crusty Canadian whose life is so meaningless that all he has left is to bully students who dare to disagree

So full of himself, thinks anyone who has a different opinion than his is totally wrong. Only still allowed to teach because the University has had him around for a long time and is a legacy. I did not like him.
he was a fun person to listen to during lectures, i learned he was an alright human being. i would take another of his lectures on my schedule... hes an alright dude
You can tell a person's political orientation by how they rate Chuck Hunt. All of the 5-1-1-1's are just disgruntled conservatives that can't handle a firebrand leftist in the college system. Yes he is biased, yes he rants, and obviously he offends. But, he knows his****, he presents facts, and he has his own opinions. I cherish opinions in this world of wishy washy moderate bs. His class was far more amusing than most, and if you have your own opinion challenge him he always welcomes it.
Without Chuck Hunt I would never have become interested in Sociology. A dynamic and fun professor
I started and ended my undergrad with Chuck; our viewpoints are vey different however I loved his courses. He challenged me to think beyond the norm; yes he is opinionated and controversial but open your mind; you don't have to like him but you can learn from him. My favorite instructor ever; not the one I liked the most but the one I learned fro
Awesome teacher! Best one I have ever had. He is genuinely interested in other opinions and he is always willing to help students out. His grading policies are super and he is overall a great professor!

People who hate Chuck are just too damn conservative, He really plays the devils advocate and opens your mind
I hated Chuck Hunt. I thought he pressed his own opinionon the students too much. I did not appreciate being told how to think about certain issues. As a college student, I am perfectly capable of thinking on my own, thank you very much.
Great professor unless you're conservative and are opposed to hearing the viewpoint of an extreme liberal. If you fall into that category, just take the class from someone else.
chuck hunt is pretty much the coolest guy ever. approach with an open mind. even if you don't agree with everything he says, there is something to be learned from him. he will be missed :(
He's kind of weird at first but he was a great teacher. Majority of his lectures were interesting and his knowledge on the subject was awesome cause he has expirenced a lot throughout his life. Great guy fun to listen too
I highly recommend Chuck for nearly everyone. The people who do best in his classes are self-motivated students who are actually interested in the material, not the grade. Getting a good grade in Chuck's classes is easy, but there is a helluva lot that you can get out of them if you want to and know how to sort and organize his tangential stories.
Chuck motivated me not only in Sociology but my entire college career. I took a class from him in 1998 and still refer to his teachings. Thought provoking and a very kind individual! You can always catch him at the Saturday Market.
I have had Chuck for quite a few Soc classes. He is a little over the top at times but he does know what he is talking about. His lectures are interesting and engaging. I would recommend that everyone take at least one class from him. Plus, his upper division classes aren't all that hard. No tests, just journals and papers!
Almost impossible to contact, doesn't reply to emails. No blackboard page for the class. Instructions for assignments are EXTREMELY limited and unclear, therefore it is hard to meet his expectations because you don't know what they are. Hunt uses this class for his own political agenda.
took 204 and 313. he's one of my favorite teachers because he is very knowledgeable on local to global issues, has lived a lot of history/participated in it as an activist/emt/taxi driver/beekeeper/......is very clear about his bias, explaining that there are no profs out there who are truly unbiased/subjective...is very enthusiastic, caring....
He was a great professor when I had him. His class was a great mental wake up call that I will always remember.
worst proffesor ive ever had, he likes to talk about himself and his political views. he likes to make you believe that everything he says is fact. dont ever take a class from him, you'll be better off.
Awesome Professor! He makes you think! All his classes are enjoyable. Plus, you retain what you have learned.
chuck's passion for what he teaches fueled by his history of protesting war makes him HOT!
I think he is honest, caring, and passionate when it comes to teaching. He could be hard to follow, and he repeats himself a lot. He is opinionated, but I appreciated a little care in the world of cold "unbiased" teaching.
I love Chuck. I'm taking another one of his classes because I love his classes and enjoy listening to his point of view. Even if you don't agree with him, there is something to learn from what he says. If having an incredibly liberal teacher will bother/ distract you, find another teacher. But he'll teach you A LOT. He's my favorite.
Such a great professor! I really liked this guy, he has a fun attitude about him, interesting lectures and he is passionate about what he is teaching. Even if your not as left-winged as Chuck Hunt, you'll learn something. This teacher has awesome past experiences and a great class structure...Keep it up Chuck!
His teaching style is all over the place. Not recommended.
Chuck Hunt is pretty interesting with all his views and information he knows, plus he has a bee farm & wears suspenders. He is pretty biased, but at least he admits it on the first day of class. Anyone who has strong liberal views and likes talking about society should take this class.
Probably one of my top 3 teachers I've ever had. This guy has so many interesting stories and is full of information that will help you succeed in the class. This has been my favorite class at the university and I've taken quite a few classes. He is fairly left-winged, but loves to give you as much help as possible. No tests, awesome textbook!
Whoever that idiot is who said 301 was UNCLEAR or hard, obviously never went to class I got an A. His materials for teaching were outstanding. He was ALWAYS available when students wanted to speak to him. Stop being such a whiny pants haha. Great prof this was my second class with him. did have to read a 300 pager but it was worth it.
I also took 301 with him. He is very closed minded and will not listen to other peoples opinions. He is ridiculous but his class is easy where you only have to write 2 papers and a "reading journal" that you dont really need to do the readings for.
Professor is very knowledgable. He has a passion for what he teaches and really wants to inform students.
Many don't like him, but i think that he is a great professor, made things as interesting as you can with a subject such as theory. if you have to take 310 take it from him.
good guy, pretty easy, just lots of papers
He really makes class interesting, even if he seems outrageous at times (I guess that's sort of what he's going for though). The class is pretty easy for me and I probably don't have to attend every lecture, but I do anyways because his lectures are so engaging. Plus his beard makes him look like Santa.
really interesting class. need to go to all lectures and consistently read and take notes on all assigned reading in order to do well on the tests. really cool guy
I enjoy this class, he is pretty outrageous in what he says and how he looks, haha. Talks a lot about Canada, his political views, and his many past professions, and goes off on tangents that don't have much to do with anything. He does seem to go over what he wants you to know, too. good videos in class as well. Counts highest 2 out of 3 midterms.
I was reading other comments and I say I have to disagree with the majority of the reviewers when it comes to SOC 207. Both the professor and the discussion leader both managed to teach me nothing. Perhaps the only informative material in class were the movies, the rest of the time in 207 he goes off on random tangents.
He was very knowledgeable and interesting. I enjoyed going to class, although at times I had to ask myself if he was going off on a tangent or if I should take notes. But I'd take him again in half a heart beat because it was interesting! I had no desire to take Soc too, but glad I did!
Chuck rocks! He is an extremely liberal marxist who knows his stuff. I have had him for 207, 301, 310 and 410 and he is basically the reason why I am a sociology major. He doesn't mess around with attendence. You must be there! His lectures can wonder but he tends to change it up a lot with movies and clips. Fairly easy grader.
Chuck is entertaining to listen to for lecture but he brings up Canada and bee-keeping way more than neccesary. He is all over the place but interesting. BIggest complaint is that he makes no connections from the reading to lecture so the tests are brutal.
Although he was very interesting to listen to, I felt like he took up a lot of class time ranting about things that weren't particularly relevant to our class. Plus, his tests seemed to test us more on how well we could restate HIS own opinions and biases rather than on how well we knew the course content.
Boring. I questioned pursuing my degree after his class. The movies are the only source of knowledge that I learned.
Good Class.Good Professor.
awesome prof! Great perspectives. Fun and interesting topics!
Most of the reviews are accurate. Hunt is extremely passionate and interesting to listen to. His biased nature does make it difficult to take notes, but his tests are more about overall comprehension and not specific details. The class is very easy grade-wise and I'd definitely recommend to anyone who's looking for an easy class
When he actually got to the material it was interesting but rather biased. I enjoyed most of his opinions but I don't need to hear a 20 min rant about how we need to get the H1N1 vaccine before every class.
While Hunt has a habit of ranting, most of his rants do fit within the subject matter of the course. Hunt is of the school of thought that the textbook is not to be taught from but as second learning material. He's oldschool, opinionated and delivers some of the best/entertaining lectures I've heard (I'm a post-bac so I've had my share of profs).
I loved this class. I was always looking forward to going. There wasn't a ton of reading and the test are all multiple choice and fairly easy if you attend class. He is very opinionated, but smart. Great class.
One of the very best professors I've had. Knows his stuff. Often shows the untold side. Brilliant. Highly recommend. Learned a ton. Changed my goals. (I had him 14 years ago and still think about the class ;)
Great professor. he tires to get students to think and just be aware of the situations going on around world. I feel like he wanted students to question his ideas to make them think more about the subject. He is very clear with what he wants and the test are pretty straight foward but you attending lecture is a must to do well.
Chuck is a BAD ASS!!! One of the smartest, most tell it like it is guys out there! If your a conservative minded person you will not like what he has to say, but if you are into questioning the status-quo the Chuck will tell you what's up! I have learned so much from him and U of O would be empty without him. Go Chuck! You made a difference to me!!
Extremely opinionated. Tests are not too terribly difficult, but you really need to go to class every day since he lectures, and does not use slides or anything else. Hunt is also SUPER opinionated, be prepared to get slepped in the face with his liberal ideas.
Great professor! He is eloquent and has interesting lectures. He challenges students to think outside of their comfort zones, and confront the brutal reality about the United States and it's history. Yes, he is very opinionated and liberal, but those who are conservative...don't take his class! He is a true class act.
Chuck is very opinionated. I've been here two years though and he has been my favorite professor. I attended all of his lectures just because they are so entertaining. He is a self proclaimed "refusnit" which means he doesnt like using technology so if you need to talk, go to his office hours. in class he is intimidating but really nice 1 on 1.
One word about his class: BORING ! Does not know****. Nothing outside US borders at least. A lot of personal life details i don't care to hear about. A waste of my money and time!!! arrggghh
Very biased, but it didn't bother me. VERY smart guy, but he goes on long tangents during every lecture. I didn't even take notes in his class. The lecture material on his midterms had pretty obvious answers, just imagine if you could hear Chuck saying it. Hard to get ahold of, but if you actually talk to him one-on-one he's a cool and helpful guy
I had SOC207 with him as well, and his teaching style is consistent. He teaches in an outline; every time he looks down, be prepared to write what he says. Tests are straightforward. You should actually get the text and read it, people fail the midterms because they don't read. Pick the most liberal answer and 99% of the time you'll be right.
Good content for the course. The class was much too large and didn't allow for much discussion. Instructor was overall engaging but kind of pompous. HORRIBLE at working with students with disabilities and VERY INFLEXIBLE with due dates and accommodations needed.
One of the most interesting professors at the school
Joke of a professor. Argues with students who oppose his views and thinks everything he says is a fact and talks as if he hates America. If he is as smart as he says he is he should be president of the US. Once offended a student and continued to as the student tried to exit the classroom in disgust, which made for an awkward classroom environment.
Great teacher. Know what he's talking about. Opinionated but will back up what he's saying and his reasons at any time!
I dont care how big your FBI file is Chuck... so stop talking about it, but your interesting and weird so i'll put up with you
Chuck is extremely opinionated and stubborn so don't try and argue with him or you'll be shut down.Luckily his opinions are interesting and I loved his lectures. The material isn't hard he just has tricky test questions so it helps to look over older tests to learn his style of testing. Overall strong professor.
Chuck really does know his stuff. He may be opinionated, but he backs it up with real evidence and factual based information that you can find elsewhere if you look. The difference between Chuck and other professors I've had is he really does teach so you learn something, not to produce a grade.
Charles Hunt is an extraordinary professor with progessive thoughts. If a student leaves the UO without taking a class from him then they've WASTED their time. Chuck is an outstanding individual and an intense professor. He brings life and truth to the UO campus. Unlike many professors, Chuck knows what he is talking about.
Chuck is by far the best professor I've had here. He is extremely intelligent and honest about what he teaches. He is not afraid to speak the truth. This school and this nation are in desperate need of more people like him. Chuck has made me a more socially aware and educated person and I will always be thankful for that.
Worst professor of my whole college experience. I consider myself liberal, but I still couldn't stand him. Rude to any students requesting information about basic course guidelines. Class was interesting, but that was because the topic was very interesting. He added some interesting points, but not worth my time. WOULD NOT SUGGEST THIS PROFESSOR!
I had Chuck two times. Once for Soc201 and once for Sociology of Women. I am a moderate/conservative but Chuck always listened respectfully to my opinions and gave me excellent reviews on my work. I learned so much from Chuck! He is a wonderful example of how to be open-minded and respect the opinions of others even when we don't agree.
Hunt is by far the best professor I have ever had. My only complaint about him is that he doesn't teach more upper lever courses. He is very liberal and does have a tendency to ramble but it is applicable to the material and I learned so much just from listening to him talk.
Chuck is the man. He wants his students to succeed and to actually think about why they are in the university. He was always encouraging personal reflection. He is very wise and helpful - take advantage of his office hours, because he's an awesome man and gives great advice. Take a class from him before he retires in the next couple years!
Chuck is a MUST TAKE if you are going to major in sociology. If you are a capitalist, right wing conservative business major, you will absolutely hate him because he IS and states it clearly "A MARXIST." You business majors might not even know who that is anyway. But CHUCK ROCKS!
Everyone has a very different opinion of this guy, mine is not the best. I don't mind personally that he's super liberal, but i am concerned about his extreme bias. I've looked up things he's said in class and they're wrong. He doesn't teach, only talks. If you like to listen to him - you're fine.
Doesn't use powerpoints but it didn't matter. Very good speaker. Passionate and animated- has a sense of humor, and interacts with the class. Might be hard to get a hold of @ times- but that's just how he rolls. Go into his office hours and he will talk to you for as long as you want. He's BRILLIANT. Best SOC prof I've had so far (I've had 3)
I was extremely moved by nearly everything he said. Being far left in my political views, we were on par with almost everything. If you are into social justice and overall moral correctness, take this course ASAP.
Chuck! This guy seriously knows what he's talking about! Is he liberal? Yes very. Does he despise the republican party? Absolutely and he is clearly a Marxist, but his views are so on key for what's happening in our country and he really opened my eyes. I have to say one of the best teachers, if you keep an open mind, that's all her asks!
Great passion, likes to go on rants against Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, etc. Not as impressed with the structure of the class, but maybe that's because I hardly ever did the readings.
Honestly one of the most passionate and inspiring profs I've ever had. Learned so much during lectures. A lot of people have a problem with how he lectures BUT they don't listen. They sit on their phones. Majority of test comes directly from his mouth. I don't understand kids today!!
This is my man who changed my view in life. Loved his class and enjoyed lectures, sad he left UO.
