Great class! Sense of humor, good teacher!
Never thought I would like psy, can't get enough of Charlie's classes
real great teacher, only had a few assignments and exams but a good guy
Multiple choice tests, journal entries. Covers exactly what is on test - easy to prepare.
great teacher. his tests are 99.9% his lecture notes. know those and the class is a breeze. hes very interesting...has great stories to tell!
I took his independent psychology class, it was the easiest class I ever took and I enjoyed it the most.
He was so easy and we never had to go to class.
Good professor and knows alot makes teaching more fun and accurate by giving examples and stories. I recommend that you take him!
great class.took it before and failed. with charles i passed. he even talked to me about some personal issues and helped me find a psychologist.lectures are fun and funny.
Great teacher, u have a lot of fun in his class with his stories & movies. His test r really easy all of them form his notes (& i had him for honors). Good, interesting & easy teacher.
FUnny teacher easy going..tests R based on in class notes. PSY was very fun with him. GREAT TEACHER>
Excellent Teacher! A real master in psychology!
G8 teacher, a lot of fun too, spend most of the time watching movies and seeing cool slides, test r also very easy, they r all based on his lectures and notes. take him and sit back and enjoy
He's a great teacher. Lots of intersting stories. Test are based on lecture notes. Easy going and you enjoy the class. He always offers to help out with personal issues if you need it. He's not a strict, by the book teacher. Take his class.
I took his independent study class and it was really easy. 3 chances to take 16 quizes is great. gives you a print-out with where you can find the answer to the questions you got wrong. 2 tests(midterm, final). study guide is long but has page numbers for answers.easy class and teaches u how to study
not very clear
Funny guy. I took him in the summer. There were three tests and 2 short (1-2pg) papers. He gave easy extra credit and let us out very early most of the time. Very nice guy. Good interesting lectures. Tells funny stories and gives good notes.
Johnston is the best Psychology teacher!! I was undecided about my major and once I took his class, i knew i wanted to do psychology. He is very understanding, funny, and sweet guy. I recommend him for everyone. He's the BEST!!!
Awesome teacher. Take him!!!!
He's a good teacher with great stories. Always has his coffee. HA. Show up to all the classes, take good notes and you'll get a good grade.
great teacher, really easy to talk to. The class is cool u do everything on your own. never have to show up for class even. just make sure you do the hw and take the quizzes and you'll do fine. you can finish the class as quick as you want cuz it's all on you. if you want lectures dont' take it.
A master in Psychology!
Awesome professor!!!!!!! Really laid back and understanding!
It's great to have a teacher who clearly enjoys what he is doing. Prof. Johnston makes this stuff really interesting and if you pay attention, you will end up learning a lot about yourself from this course, in addition to learning the theories. IMHO this class should be mandatory! Very cool teacher, one of the best.
The best teacher ever....He is awesome!!! Will help you anytime! I recommed him to everyone! Just an amazing teacher...
yo he's fukn hilarious
he is the best teacher ever. He is really a great teacher and I think everyone should take him, he is soooo funnny!!!!
Dr. Johnston is an amazing professor!! he talks a lot about his family and where he grew up. he's very easy to talk to and outgoing. some things are not clear and he doesn't have the best writing but just ask him to clarify it and he will. homework assignments can be turned in whenever.
Great teacher, easy tests, just make sure u go to class for the notes.
Took his self-paced Psych class, great teach, really understanding about some unusual circumstances. Great teacher, definately recommend him!
He is a very he;pful teacher made things easy and clear. Gives out study guide sheet before each exam, it was great.
I took the non-lecture class and he gave us 3 chances to take the quizzes in the testing center. To turn in the chapter studyguides all you had to do was make sure that you showed him the chapters before the due date. The only tests you had to see him for was the final and midterm. I finished the class 1 month early.
Great teacher! Not very sociable though during class. He will not know your name unless you talk to him after class. THe study guides are long as heck and he doesn't fully check them. No work to do other than the guides. Good class. Extra credit offered.
Great class, great teacher. Everyone should be required to take it. You learn a lot about yourself.
Listen and take notes in class and you'll hget an A. He wants you do do well, and even though he talks the entire period, he keeps you interested. Psychology is very cool, and he is the kind of weirdo you would expect to teach the subject. Very funny, and friendly guy.
good teacher, but his exams sucks!!! be careful... you've to read a lot... and work hard... although easy C if not at all interested maybe F also.
He is a great teacher and a great guy. His lectures are always interesting and fun to listen to. He tells many stories about his crazy life and relates them to what he is talking about. Easy class if you pay attention to the lectures and do the study guides on time.
dull and boring and least informative of all the psy teachers here plus he uses old info . There are better choices on the staff here so go with another teacher
I got bored and ended up not showing up anymore!! Then his exams are hard!
A great and interesting teacher. He is funny and just crazy enough to be teaching this subject. His tests can be a little hard, because they teach you to apply the theory rather than just learn it. But it is worth it :) one of my favorites
Very easy class. As long as you try hard a good grade will be given. Sometimes his examples are somewhat confusing and contradictory to what he just explained but thats why there is a book.
Mr.Johnston has a very interesting and funny class. As long as you take good notes and complete your work book there is no way you could do bad on his exams. (3 exams all semester.) Only about 4 homework assignments.
Prof. Johnston was a great teacher. There were many in class personality tests which made this class lots of fun. He did not assign due dates for take home work, so the class was very laid back and casual. Review sheets for all exams were given so there were no suprises. This was a good class that let me learn about myself.
The exams are straight from the notes. His study guides are helpful, if the study guide has things that arent in the notes look them up on the book, 100% that it will be on the test. Has hilarious stories to tell and very approachable. Great guy, hes like the funny grandpa u wish u had!
Great guy and very funny.
Wonderful professor, wants you to succeed and do the best you can in his class. Very helpful and always willing to help out. No suprises, he lets you know what is on the tests from the detailed study guides. A++++ guy!!! Oh and very funny!! :) :)
I took his self-paced class and enjoyed it immensely. The quizzes are straight out of the study guide and you're allowed to take them 3 times with the highest grade counting. The midterm and final are pencil&paper, but the questions are directly from the quizzes. Easy A and a very interesting teacher!! Highly recommended!!
Great teacher, wants you to do well in the class. Give ample opportunity for extra credit! Always willing to help out!
A very interesting teacher. Loves to talk about how his experiences relate to psych. I thought the class was kind of hard, but I got an A. Just make sure you do all the study guide chapters on time n study for the test beforehand. He gave a few extra credit opportunities also.
HE is unlike anyone i met, lol, His stories are interesting and hes a really funny person (REAlly wierd though) but the class is pretty good HArd though cuz u have to do STUDY guides for each test and the tests are hard
great teacher. tough class, but if you pay attention and do the study guides, you'll pass with at least a C. class was in the theater so attendance was not mandatory. has lots of funny stories. approachable and interesting.
There is absolutely no teaching what so ever. No lectures. Completely self paced. Good for some....but if you are looking for a lectured class this is NOT the teacher for you.
GREAT TEACHER!!!!!I LOVE HIM HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR EVERYONE.. ITS SO WELL WORTH IT..GREAT ATTITUDE
he's very helpful. The class is basically self paced. You have to learn by yourself, att isn't mandatory, but i went everyday cuz he gives out extra credit assignments and he doesn't repeat. Tests are very hard and concise. I studied hard core for each test, the first i got a D, second C- and last B the last is easiest. YOU HAVE TO STUDY OR FAIL.
You will learn a boatload in this class. I wish I had gotten more feedback on my assignments earlier in the semester, but when I did get it, it made sense. Lots of writing. Lots of reading.
amazing teacher and person. I never thought I would learn so much in an summer class. Yes, the lectures are long, but he does well to keep students engaged thanks to his sense of humor. Not uptight at all, that is not to say the class was a piece of cake. You have to do your studying, Reaches out to students like none other.
This teacher is awesome! When registering it says self-paced and he tells you the first day. So if you don't like self-paced classes then obviously don't do this class. All you have to do is make sure you do all your study guides because that's a huge part of your grade which is easy to do because it gives you the page numbers where to find the ans
Weird class, you answer basic but numerous questions from a study guide and with information from the text book. Then you take computerized 20 question quizzes over a chapter. Rinse and repeat for ~10 chapters with a non-comprehensive final and midterm. Are due dates but you never need to come to class. Self paced, easy but quite a bit of work.
GREAT TEACHER; Would recommend. Not too many assignments. Points are basically the tests & study guide. If u do a lil of the study guide at a time then it shouldnt be a problem [Dont do it last minute]. Take good notes in class. Tests are what is covered in class n should be fairly easy. Hes funny and explains well. Offers a lil of Extra credit.
If you're into Psychology you'll love the class, but if you're not you can still succeed pretty easily and you'll learn some interesting things along the way.
Great teacher. very smart. Not much work. Easy and he makes things understandable. But he has a really monotone voice.
He is easy. He tries to make everything as clear as possible. He offers study sessions once a week if you want to go over topics that he have discussed. Grading is clear cut. He is a great professor.
Most people I find really enjoy his class, I was not a big fan though. He is funny and has great stories, but I really did not learn anything. I found his lectures to be pointless and the study guides to be obnoxious. It is an easy class to take with little work, but a professor that is not very personable.
I found his class to be enjoyable. He made everything relatable. I would recommend him to anyone. Plus he is a very smart guy and seems to have a range of knowledge outside of his field as well, the kind of person who can have a conversation about anything.
Awesome teacher, knows everything you need to know about psychology. Great teacher. Easy to get along with.
He's funny. His stories are kind of weird, but funny. His lectures didn't really help me much. Just read the textbook and study the vocab and you'll be fine. Go to class you get extra credit opportunities. A lot of people didn't pass the 1st and 2nd test and by the 5th week half of the class dropped. I would go to class he gives u e.c.
Does a great job of helping students retain information by relating to personal experiences, didn't really appreciate him until we had a temp fill in for him. Thank god for Dr. J.
A very easy going guy. Material on the exams is what he goes over in class, so attend his class. His teaching method is a bit disorganized but understandable.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT TAKE HIM! If you intend on passing Psych 101, do not take him as a teacher! Class notes are babble and don't mean anything nor do they have any contribution to exams. Horrible communication with students. Exams are pretty straight forward. Assigns 3 writing assignments and if you miss the class, then you're SOL! DONT TAK
Hilarious professor, extremely laidback, sarcastic, reminds me of Red Forman from That 70's show (not just appearance but personality also), knowledgeable. Tells weird stories yet they relate to topics being discussed. 3 exams, 2 writing assignments that are 1 page. Study guides are very easy. Lenient grader. By far my favorite professor at Harper.
Mr. J is awesome. You feel like you can really relate to him because he is down to earth and says it like it is. Very straight forward. Homework is easy, quizzes & tests are pretty easy plus you get 3 attempts. He is sarcastic and hilarious. Do your work on time and you will get an A. Very laid back and leaves the responsibility up to you! A+++++++
Take his self teaching class. It was the easiest class I have taken at Harper. You just have to do weekly study guides that you can show him whenever so attendance isn't necessary. You get 3 attempts on quizzes which aren't hard. Study for his midterm and final and you should have no problem getting an A.
Dr. Johnston is a good man and teacher. The course is so simple and as long as you do your work, you're guaranteed a very solid B, likely a solid A. He is very laid back and funny to talk to. He'll help you with anything you need and the class is fair. Take this course!!!!!!!
Amazing teacher. Also took honors version of theories of personality with him. Def a great teacher. Loved his stories. Highly recommended! :)
Always late. Never consistent with due dates and consistently going off topic. Not a good teacher for anybody who needs help from a teacher.
Never on time and very hard to get a hold of. Test dates are always pushed back and can never figure out what is going on. If this course is hard for you, he isn't the right teacher.
Wow, he should NOT be teaching..... Tests are for the most part easy, but he is very hard to follow.. I had no idea what was going on in that class. Oh, and thanks Charles for telling us we need to take quizzes on Aplia, which I did and spent a long time on & received good grades as well, then telling us we aren't using aplia anymore.
Very easy going and interesting sense of humor. EXTREMELY smart man
Great Professor. I recommend every one to take him. He is very interesting and willing to help you always. One of the best professors I have had! Just do what he asks you to do and you will learn a lot.
Not a fan of this professor. You don't need to go to class, just read the book and study for the tests from there. All he does it talk about stories and bore to death. He has a lazy style of teaching, doesn't seem like he even WANTS to be teaching.
While late and disorganized, he somehow manages to actually make you retain valuable information by relating life examples with class subject matter. Slightly entertaining with a colorful history, he's bound to teach your the difference between perception and reality.
You literally don't have to follow along with him during class. I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about until he handed out the study guides for the midterm/final. Hardly any assignments or tests. Had one major paper due at the end. If you want to learn about Psy don't take. Very hilarious teacher and extremely nice, but SO disorganized.
I HIGHLY recommend this professor. He really knows his materials and has a great sense of humor. You NEED to attend classes because most of his test materials are directly from lecture. He is very fair and reasonable and will not included questions he hasn't covered. On top of it, he has review sheet and review sessions. Easy A. Gives extra credit.
I initially met Charlie in 2001 when I began by College Career. He is the reason I devoted myself to studying psychology. I am now a license psychotherapist and have to thank Charlie for being an important and pivotal person in my life and career. I highly, highly recommend you meet him; extremely inspirational.
Personally I highly disliked him and his teaching methods. He has an odd voice that is hard to understand. I regret taking him. His lectures are just personal stories, that just make the material harder to understand. The other day he told the class the if we were not receiving a C or higher, we should consider dropping out of school. TERRIBLE
Dr. Johnston is an incredibly interesting person to listen to speak. I had high hopes for this semester, however many things about Dr. Johnston's class left me feeling rather cheated. Tomorrow is our final, and not a single grade has been posted on BB. Tests are difficult and the material is not presented clearly in lecture. I do not recommend.
He is a very interesting man, just a little strange and different.
Good teacher he will help you if you ask him for it. In our class at least there wasn't a lot of textbook use it was mostly him talking to the class. He does like to tell stories of his past but they have meaning if you can understand what he's trying to tell you. When in doubt ask questions he will answer.
First of all, he doesn't care about you, teaching, or correcting his horrible spelling. I'm in his psych 101 class and honestly, I have not learned a THING! I went to TWO of his review sessions and he's too lazy to write anything down, or even STAND UP. From those review sessions, I couldn't learn anything. Worst teacher ever.
Dr. J really tries his best to make it easier for us to understand Psychology
AMAZING TEACHER!!! I was in both his honors theories of personality class and his other normal classes for psychology and I try to take his classes whenever possible! awesome chill teacher, helpful and easy to talk to.
He was Fabulous
He was very funny, and a great teacher. He explained things in a way that it was impossible for you to not understand
Great teacher, one of my favorites at harper! Very funny in a weird way, explains things really well. Tests are easy if you study a little. Lectures are entertaining. Tells very funny stories during his lectures. Extra credit if you go to review sessions.
Professor Johnston made class fun and I actually looked forward going. He related a lot of topics to either funny or personal stories that made it easy for me to remember. He gives out a lot of extra credit and is VERY helpful when it comes to test reviews. Homework load is light!! Take him!!!
His lectures are not the clearest. He does make funny jokes during them, though. There aren't very many homework assignments and there are only 3 exams. The second one is the hardest. Take as many notes as you can in this class. He's overall a cool guy though.
My class was in the lecture hall with tons of students so attendance wasn't taken, but he did pass around a sheet a few times to write our names down for brownie points. Overall the class is fairly easy if you're able to take good notes/study. He offers study sessions before each test, and gives out four straightforward short writing assignments.
Took Johnston's class over the summer, and I think that he is a good, lenient teacher. He offers opportunities of extra credit, and only few HW assignments that aren't difficult at all. Only two exams for the summer, midterm and takehome final. Going to class isn't required, but majority of the lectures are on exams. Lectures better than textbook.
I took Prof. Johnston over the summer. He has an different sense of humor, its dry somewhat "The Office" like. I really would have liked extra credit but there wasn't any given :( I purchased the psych book for class but we didnt really use it much, the class was lecture heavy so as long as you paid attention to him, youll do well on the tests.
He's a funny guy, but the material we learn is class is only a fraction of the test. There are questions on there that weren't from the study guide. He doesn't put in your grades online until the very end of the semester. He says "do this for EC" but I'm not even sure if he put it in. But, he is very helpful if you go to him for questions.
He doesn't teach, basically goes over 10 minutes on the materail and the rest babbles about his life which is boring. Read the chapters then you will do well in the class. Pick someone else if you can.
Very unclear about what's going on in class. Mostly just talks about his life, which are pretty boring stories. I was very lost as to what I needed to know for the test and what chapter we were on. Don't take him if you can take someone else
I had him for my first semester as a freshman and he was overall pretty great. I took his class in the theatre but definitely taught pretty well. He told us a lot of stories about his life which I saw in many reviews on here. I think they helped me understand concepts a lot more clear if I was on the edge about it. Overall thought he was great.
Bad. Need this class for grad school, but am seriously thinking of dropping. He is very unclear & hard to follow during lecture. Changes his mind on expectations on term paper half way to deadline. Doesn't post x-credit, hw, or anything else to BB. Doesn't stick to syllabus. Essay exams sound easy, then drops a bomb of last minute requirements.
Charles Johnston is the dopest and funniest professor ive ever taken. bad sides: doesn't use blackboard, not vocally clear sometimes when he speaks, goes with the flow it seems like for his courses. good sides: smart, understanding, funny, tells you what he wants for projects, not strict or picky with grading, shares stories, overall just great
Funny, but doesnt teach at all. Talks more about his life than anything related to psy! Never updates grades on BB. Hardly ever on time to lectures, constantly posting the "wrong" study guides for exams!
Dr. Johnston is hands down my favorite professor at harper.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Claims you will be given extra credit but never puts it in. No homework. Doesn't use blackboard at all. Tells stories instead of teaching the material. Doesn't explain what will be on the test. Never replies to any emails. When you want help, he just confuses you even more. Be ready to teach yourself.
I took this class my first semester at Harper and at first I thought he wasn't teaching, just telling stories. But by the first test, I realized his stories helped us to better understand the topic by giving us a real life situation. Incredibly funny and genuinely caring. Only problem is that he is late frequently for class and lectures.
He's an okay professor, but he frequently goes on tangents about trucks.. like come on dude. I don't care about trucks..
Didn't cover material as required by class. Keep going on about how 18 wheelers are a menace to society and that we all need to "rise up." I sold him some bud after class to help him clam down and he gave me an A+ for helping him "collect himself and prepare." Dunno anything about that, but thanks for the A man!
I dive semis for a living and I think he didn't like me very much.
