this guy rules
Good guy
Good guy, great lecturer, easy to understand. He also posts great notes online sometimes.
He's a nice guy, very friendly and personable, sometimes funny. Good online notes
Has too many TAs that don't know what they're doing. Sometimes hard to take early in the morning (very chipper). Friendly and helpful when he's around, though.
he does a really good job explaining his material, plus he provides online notes too. really friendly guy. my class at pitt so far.
Very enthusiastic and intelligent. Great prof. to take who's dedicated, amusing and really knows his stuff. Makes the class such a pleasant experience. Definitely take him!
his multiple choice tests are confusing at times and the TA I had should not have been trying to teach anything, but charlie's a funny guy with good notes that are always online.
Great prof. Funny and helpful. My TA was ridulously stupid but he is awesome. Would def take another class with him.
Prof. Jones is a great teacher. He is funny and makes any class enjoyable. He is extremely easy to talk to and is available for questions outside of class. I would definitely recommend taking a class with him.
Adorable man, great lecturer, take his class.
Charlie Jones is a really good teacher he's very knowledgable and fair. His tests aren't hard if you study and pay attention in lecture. He has many random funny stories. Really a great guy, definately take his class if you can. He rules.
Course title/description were not accurate. The tests are awful. Lectures are simply verbal versions of the notes, pointless. I cant believe this guy gets paid to do this class... shows that the university system is Bulshit. The TA's on the other hand are pretty cool. Dont take this if it just sounds cool to you. Tests are random and tricky
I didn't do very well in his class, but I came out with more knowledge than when I came in. He was always available for questions, and wasn't condescending when you asked him one.
Professor Jones is very interesting to listen to during lecture. The only major problem is that he tries to teach too much between tests -- meaning that you need to memorize a ton of information....and relate it back on the tests which are tricky in spots. He's really interesting and funny....but this class isn't an easy walk-through.
He's a good professor, but his test are horrific. For a gen ed science class. It's really really hard. Yes, the notes are exactly what he speaks about in class, but the amount of information that has to be learned for each exam is extreme. He thinks that everyone is really interested in the class.
this class is fun if you are more interested in evolution than in extraterrestrials. it's still pretty laid back and the tests are straightforward. also, every once in awhile he will be able to make you laugh
Ahh, the memories. :) Charlie is the most adorably hilarious prof EVER. The material is fairly dense, and he does wander off track, but it's such fun anyway. :)
All of his powerpoint notes are posted online, so coming to class isn't really important.
If you think this is going to be an easy A or B, it's not. This class is not nearly as easy as it looks. The amount of information you have to memorize for each test is way too much, and the questions on the test aren't very easy. If you study all the time, you can get good grades in this course, but that's about the only way
Everything, or almost everything you need to know comes right out of the notes, which are posted online. Go to recitation too and you'll get an easy A.
Dr. Jones is a nice guy, but he's so into rocks that he thinks everyone should be. Although the exams are harder than they really should be and involve some serious studying, you don't really have to attend lecture.. except for his corny jokes. Just make sure you do your stuff for recitation and study for exams, and you'll make an easy B/A-.
Not as easy as you'd think. There's an ungodly amount of notes to remember and the tests are very hard. Lecture is ok... makes lame jokes but explains the material fairly well.
Tests were difficult. He tries really hard and seems like a nice guy, but lecture was pretty boring.
Tests were difficult. He tries really hard and seems like a nice guy, but lecture was pretty boring.
so easy. all lecture notes were posted right on courseweb so all you had to do was print them out and there you go. tests came almost completely from the notes, and he told you specifically what you needed to know from the book. recitations were quick with really helpful TAs.
really fun guy! he made cute jokes in class and made geology seem really cool. I learned SO much more than i ever thought I would from a random science req. Don't take it if you want an easy A, but if you're cool with a B then I would definitely suggest it. His tests are fairly easy except for a few questions meant to trip you up.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE ONLY FULFILLING A REQUIREMENT OR B/C YOU THINK THAT IT WILL BE EASY, IT WONT BE. lecture is completely boring, tests are hard and detailed, and RECITATIONS ARE LABS that require actual attendance and work! Take astronomy instead!
Presents the lecture in a fun and engaging way, and is an excellent teacher. Recitations are largely make-work and tests are difficult, but the lecture experience is enjoyable.
too much info for a class that should be fun and easy, conclusion, no aliens, wack
intelligent life: packs way too much information into each lecture, jumps wildly from subject to subject, lacks any clarity, extremely hard tests (very detailed and tricky questions), boring classes, useless recitation- do not take this class
He's a good professor. I have no interest in geology, but he at least makes things kind of funny. He posts all of his power point lectures.
Not at all interested in Geo but he was atleast somewhat funny. I highly reccomend and if you have an issue go see him and I'm sure he'll help you work it out. Recitation HW's were normally very easy.
Prof. Jones is a really interesting teacher, espcially for a science person. He has a bit of an eccentric personality..which caused some trick questions on exams. Also, the name of this class is deceiving. It should be called "Evolution" as "Intelligent Life in the Universe" is not really discussed at length.
Great guy, really enthusiastic about science. class isn't mandatory, lectures are HUGE. just print off the power points and study those for success on exams. lots of work for an intro class...
great sense of humor and i would recommend going to class cause it helps on the tests
He is lazy. He takes forever to get tests back to you. It is all multiple choice and he makes the questions unnecessarily complicated.Through his "joking" in questions, sometimes the questions are just totally incoherent. He will not round a grade up.There were over 30 people that got grades like 89.9 or 79.4(real examples)that were not rounded up.
Class was a bit odd, but Dr. Jones made it fun with extra bits of information. He's up front about what will be on exams and grades pretty fairly. It's a good idea to go to class since it will help quite a bit on exams.
Really good professor. Funny and down to earth.
Teacher is funny guy, makes jokes during class. Provides helpful notes on Blackboard. Will be a boring class if you aren't interested. Gives study guides for the test which are basically the test itself. Requires you to know a lot of info for the tests. Not much homework. Recitations are fairly easy. Study and you will be fine.
Best professor I have ever had. Even if you have no interest in geology at all, still take his class because he's so funny. He posts all of his powerpoints, barely uses the book, and his tests are really easy if you do the study guides. As long as you study a little it's an easy A.
I had him for 871 and 800, his jokes are kinda corny, but still funny. His lectures are usually very interesting. The tests, however are actually a bit hard than you'd expect the whole class. I did, though learn a lot about Geology with him.
CHARLIE IS THE BEST! Geology isn't that hard. The lecture content is all in the book, but you will have to study for the tests.
Geology Lab 0055 is as great as lab classes get. Prof Jones teaches it, but has several TAs to help as well. They'll explain/check any question, so it's easy to get nearly 100 for each week. The only thing I can complain about is that the labs almost always had to be taken home to complete. There simply just wasn't enough time in the 2hrs alloted.
Such a great guy! He is very knowledgable and really goofy. He makes class very enjoyable!
he is the absolute best! He's hilarious (if youre into really corny humor...which i am). He's super duper knowledge (he went to oxford on a rhodes scholarship for chrissakes) i feel like everyone loves him. the only thing is, he gets a little lazy with posting labs early.
Charlie is the best! 55 is a decent lab class although it's probably more for geo majors. He really knows his stuff (former Rhodes Scholar) and he's incredibly helpful. His TAs are pretty competent and available to help. He posts the labs online ahead of time which makes it easy to prepare. Take Charlie if you have the opportunity, for any class.
Hands down the best and most enjoyable professor I've ever had. Pitt has some real duds teaching there, but Charlie's classes are great. He takes the time to explain things and is straightforward on subject matter. You WILL be smarter after taking his class and you'll LIKE IT too :)
Loved this class. May not be what you are use to if you are not a science major but you are guaranteed an A if you study the notes. He keeps your attention with his goofy jokes and is very approachable if you need help. He also gives extra credit and his tests are all MC. Take him!!
Great professor, very funny and keeps lectures interesting. Geology isn't hard per se, but you do have to study the notes well, and it's a lot of memorization. More importantly, make sure you really understand the processes of how things work (not just the vocabulary). This will serve you well on the tests. Pay attention and you'll learn a lot!
Charlie is the man. Very knowledgeable on the subjects and can be unclear at times, but if you ask him to explain, he always does so. He's also hilarious. And not too difficult, if you put moderate effort into the class
Charlie is the man. Great teacher and great guy to talk to. Very knowledgeable and will help you in any way he can.
Fun intro geology class. More hands on than 0800 or the other intro courses. Charlie is very helpful if you ask him anything but be prepared for a longer answer than you would expect. Buy the text book NEW! I bought it used and had to copy someone's for all the labs.
Great professor. He is very passionate about the material he teaches and will do everything he can to help students. His lectures are fun, he has a quirky, but enjoyable sense of humor, and very energetic. Powerpoints are very clear and his intro level classes are very easy.
Great guy, he knows his stuff and translates his knowledge well in lectures! Favorite Pitt geology professor! Charlie Jones you are the man!
Top class guy. A real mans man.
4 tests including a final, lab is 35% of the grade so it's just enough to make it so you have to do all and well to do well. All lectures are on courseweb but it does help to go to class so he knows your face.
Charlie is one of the greatest most caring professors I've had. He makes Geology so interesting, (even when we talked about boring stuff like glaciers and morianes). I def reccomend.
Charlie is a great professor. Coursework for History of the Earth was challenging but very interesting and rewarding.
Professor Jones was really great. It's clear that he enjoys what he's teaching, and he often is very enthusiastic about the material. His lectures and slides are very thorough, and he posts everything online. I learned a lot from Professor Jones, and enjoyed taking this class.
Charlie was great in History of the Earth. He is very knowledgeable and is able to connect with students. Some of the maps and crosscuts are difficult to interpret but if you go to his office he is very helpful.
Charlie is a great professor and a really intelligent guy. Makes lectures entertaining and explains things very well. Studying from powerpoint slides is a must. Exams are thorough, but if you study the notes you don't need a book. The research paper with this class really helps to prepare for scientific writing in the future. Take him!
My favorite professor at Pitt! His lectures are fun, he is always willing to help, and he's one of the nicest people ever. I had him for Geol 0055, and he was excited for everything and genuinely cares. 10/10 would recommend
Charlie is such a genuinely good person. He's very approachable and readily answers questions. Labs are long and annoying and grading may seem tough but there's an unspoken curve that will help!!
Best professor i ever had at Pitt!
Charlie Jones is the best professor I have ever had. We don't deserve him. I fully believe Charlie was put on this earth to teach geology classes. The class itself is quite difficult if you aren't a geology major(I'm environmental science). Tests are all short answer and you're expected to know a lot. Charlie and the fieldtrips make it worth it
Charlie's geology lab was great. The labs start with a brief 15-minute lecture that reviews the assigned readings. His quizzes were a little tough but definitely passable. He's clearly passionate about what he does and it shows. He's always eager to explain everything and help you out. Would love to take more classes with him in the future.
Charlie clearly loves his job, he is dedicated to helping students learn the basics of geology lab and helps us get a good grade with an unspoken curve. Don't miss lab period, you can go to another section (1-4 hours/week on labs). Turn in labs on-time--No quizzes/labs dropped but they're more than fair; TAs are always there to answer questions.
Great, fun guy who makes class lively. Does not lecture material which made class loose but a little difficult. The lab took much more work than a 2 credit class should. You will need to study mineral and rock types in person to do well on those (don't rely on reading). Basically labs are a lot of work and self guided, hard to remain motivated.
Hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had at Pitt. Hilarious, knowledgeable, clearly loves science and nature. Course expectations are clear and he lets you know very clearly what he expects you to know for the test.
Charlie Jones is the gold standard for what a geology professor should be. Super knowledgeable, takes time for his students, and hes hilarious. He makes you work hard, but its all worth it when you get into the field. 10/10 would recommend.
Best prof at Pitt, no question about it. Funny and caring, and is extremely fair with tests and homework.
Charlie is an interesting professor who does a great job at keeping the class entertained. However, the class was definitely a lot of work, especially considering it was only 2 credits.
Charlie is an awesome professor. He makes you work in geology lab but you will learn a lot. He is very helpful if you have any questions and he will make sure you learn the material. The labs take quite a bit of work but the TA's basically give you the answers.
Excellent, caring, understanding and respectful professor. Truly cares about his students. Gives very tough, but fair exams (no curveballs or topics not touched in lecutres), but he always provides study guides that when used correctly will always help on exams.
Charles is a great professor! He makes lectures and labs as fun and interesting as he can, and he is super kind and understandable. Labs are easy when you get help from TAs (go to their office hours!!), though the weekly quizzes and the final are very difficult, and require good preparation and studying.
I was surprised by how tough the quizzes could be. Take the time to really study for those. I took an online class so I knew what questions I got wrong but if I got partial credit I did not know what I got wrong and I did not know the right answer. You could email the TA but it was hard to build learning. Dr. Jones was nice, but only an ok teacher.
Honestly he's a very charismatic and funny professor, along with being very helpful and knowledgeable. Helped me to decide for sure that I want to major in the subject matter.
While Dr. Jones is passionate about the course content and funny, the significant amount of homework he assigns is unnecessary. The labs are typically twelve pages long and homework and quizzes are also assigned along with the labs, which leaves little time to study for other classes. I will be sure to avoid any classes taught by him in the future.
Dr. Jones was super nice and funny, and I enjoyed his lectures for the most part, but the quizzes were awful! A lot of the questions wouldn't be based from the background we read in the textbook which made them impossible to score high on. Labs take a long time to get through, but they're not too bad.
Charlie is so passionate about geology which makes this class so much fun. Just a fun guy to talk to even about non-geology stuff. You will probably have to work on labs outside of class, but the lab is 2 credits whereas most labs are 1 so it makes up for it. The TA's are super helpful with the labs as well so it's not bad. Made me excited to learn
Lectures are very engaging & his + the TA's feedback will help get you through the lab whenever you feel stuck. The tests are definitely difficult & you have to use a lot of brainpower to understand the lab content. For the rock tests, go to the geology room beforehand and work hands-on with the minerals! Class drags on towards the end, but is fun!
charlie is nice but not a great lecturer so you pretty much have to rely on the textbook--but the textbook is written by him so its also not fantastic. The course is the exact amount of work you would expect: one lab and one quiz a week. The lab can rarely be completed during class time so expect to spend some time outside of class on it.
Clear love for geology. Very helpful during labs and had clear explainations if there was any confusion. Weekly study guides posted before each quiz were very helpful.
He's amazing! Take his classes! His quizzes are admittedly pretty hard but not impossible, plus most points are from other things anyway. I'm pretty good at geo but got a B, but I wouldn't take any other prof. He's really funny too, just all around a great guy and really good at what he does!
Dr. Jones is a nice guy, but he is very smart and it's hard for him to dumb it down to the level of someone learning his course for the first time. Quizzes are hard, labs are confusing and take a very long time. Too much work and stress for a 2 credit course. He wrote the textbook so it's confusing and it's expensive.
Charlie is funny and loves what he does. I always enjoy his classes and conversations with him outside of class. He's just maybe too smart to be teaching people things they've never seen before. Tests are really hard, he doesn't quite know how to explain it in ways you can learn. His classes are doable and I recommend him to everyone. Its just hard
Charlie is very nice, but there was very little instruction given in this class most of the learning came from reading the textbook. The weekly quizzes got progressively difficult and you have to study for each of them. The labs were difficult and time consuming. We never finished the lab on lab day. Utilize your TAs to be successful in this class.
He was very nice... but I'm confused as to why his reviews are so high. His lectures were okay I guess, but he made us buy a $90 textbook that he wrote and we didn't even use all of it. The labs were time-consuming and often mind-numbingly dull, just like the reading. This class made me switch majors because I never want to look at a map again.
Don't listen to other reviews, Charlie is amazing, if you need help, ask and he will help. Yes the labs are long and difficult but its a lab class lol they're gonna be a bit difficult. Quizzes are NOT HARD idk why people think they are if you put in minimal studying each week youll ace every quiz. Never got lower than an 85% on a quiz. Great class!
Charlie is the best. He cares about all his students and makes lab really interesting and fun. The lab content can be boring and difficult at times but he always offers help and is a really great teacher. Gives study guides for the weekly quizzes and if you study for the quizzes you will do well.
Charlie is the absolute best, he cares so much and when he speaks you can tell. His class had a high workload but its all manageable, one of my easier classes.
Charlie is so funny and really cares about his students. The class was difficult, but I was always interested in the material and was never bored. The camping field trip was also so so fun!
this was a lab so there wasn't a ton of instructor involvement, mainly just UTAs. He's still super enthusiastic about geology and always willing to talk about rocks etc. The lab assignments could feel endless but they were graded pretty fairly and that was the only "homework." his quizzes/exam wasn't ridiculous either, very doable
He's such a cool professor. I thought some of the labs we did were very challenging and confusing, however if you go to Charlie or the UTAs they were really helpful with explaining things clearly. This is great intro course for environmental majors.
Charlie is everything you'd want in a professor: he's kind, passionate, and I feel myself getting smarter and learning the material. I thought quizzes would be annoying, but he gives you a study guide with everything you need to know-so if you flunk them that's kind of on you. I'd apply myself more in other classes if more professors were like him!
Charlie is a great guy, always willing to chat about geology. This class is not easy (GEOL0060). I thought it would be similar to 0055 but its much more content. However, Charlie will help you if you need it. Also the field trip is good fun and you actually learn a good bit. Just put in some effort and you should be good.
He is so nice! The class isn't bad, but you definitely need to study for the quizzes. The TAs are super helpful during the lab, so be sure to ask them if you have questions. Overall fun class and he takes you on a field trip which is super fun.
Dr. Jones is very enthusiastic, but his labs were a pain. You really don't learn that much: it's more like scrambling to finish the long labs that were unnecessarily hard and confusing. You could also tell a lot of the labs hadn't been updated in years with lots of irrelevant material imbedded in them. Weakly quizzes weren't bad though.
Charles Jones is the most overrated prof at Pitt. He is a very nice guy and wants all his students to do well in his class. If you have questions he will gladly answer. However, he does not teach. You learn from the textbook and fill out packets. You rarely finish the labs before the end of class. The quizzes arent too bad but some can be difficult
Professor Jones is great - he's passionate and makes the material interesting. The labs can be challenging, but the study guides and unstuck AI are super helpful. Overall, a solid intro course.
charlie is always fun, took him for paleo and it was interesting and fun like it always is, labs were long like usual but not hard, we had a midterm exam which was ok and then just online quizzes for the rest of the year so not bad at all, learned a lot about invertebrate paleontology and definitely glad picked this as an elective
Charlie was a very fun professor and always down to talk about everything geology. Lectures are short and entertaining, then you have time to work on your lab. Having a group to work on the lab with is important, and definitely ask the TAs for help and go to their office hours! Note that you do have to buy his textbook cuz you use it for every lab
Absolute king, I love rocks now. Really interesting class, super fun professor, manageable quizzes. Only advice, try to study more than 40 minutes before quiz, and MAKE SURE you have submitted your labs.
