Really nice teacher.
Good teacher but some stuff that he teaches doesn't correspond with whats on the test
Overall a great teacher. Can be slow on the material (labs don't always correspond to what we are learning).
Classes don't correspond to labs, what he teaches is different from what's on the test. Can be really boring and dry, but is typically approachable.

Pretty nice guy, but I would rather watch grass grow
he's nice and willing to help during office hours, but I never knew quite what to expect on exams, and didn't do all that well. Class was easy, but then tests were hard.
really nice guy--he's great in office hours and in class...but then you get slammed with test material you have never seen, and there are virtually no practice poblems worked in class..good luck anyone in chem 2
he was a good teacher, easy to approach, not much other than that. teaches at his own pace and doesn't care if he is at a slower pace then the lab, not good...
Does not emphasize the important points. Tests are hell on paper but maddd curve. Very personable and down to earth. Flexible on schedule and shows consideration to other classes. Love/Hate relationship. A is unlikely.
Very fair teacher. Read the book and DEFINITELY study from the problems he gives in class. Try to narrow down the problems from the test information he gives before the day of the test. Finals are very similar to the tests.
Great teacher, but hard class. Hes a real nice guy.
This is a challenging class especially if you do not have a great chemistry background from high school. I really liked his style b/c he goes intot the theory of the problem instead on solely working examples. He is very nice.
well, it was hard understanding him, and the book wasnt any help since it was harder than him.
really nice guy. flexible, too. not a very good communicator with the lab department, not good. gets behind and gives easy material in class. on tests, be prepared for stuff he never explained. if you get an A, you deserve it. dont expect an A, though.
hard tests and very unclear lectures but a nice guy; best way to study is to do the problems A LOT! and good luck because its rough!
He is unclear in class sometimes, but he knows his stuff. Overall, take him if you want to learn the subject, but he does test hard. Make sure to look at old tests too.
He is a very nice person, but not a fantastic teacher. He knows his stuff, but I didn't understand a word that came out of his mouth. If you don't have a strong chemistry background from high school, good luck.
Makes problems seem easy in class, but tests are a completely different story. Really has no sympathy for stuggling students. But I guess he's better than De la Rosa
He is a very nice guy, very friendly and easy to communicate, not a very easy class because the test cover a lot more than he does. The class is straight forward so there is nothing that is impossible, just really got to work.
The lectures are boring and the best way to pass the test is to read the book and do the problems he gives you on WebCT.
I hated this class because of the tests. Even though you are aloud to bring in a full page front and back in to the test with any information on it that you want the tests were still impossible.
Very unorganized. His lectures make sense, but the test material does not match up. He does not take the material in a logical order. Even if you have a background in chem, you will be confused. If you are not in the lab, be prepared to not get your test back until the week of the next test.
He is really inconsisent! I would not take him if you don't have to. The tests will be your only grade, however the material covered in class is not on the test. Learn to love your chem book. Start early and read it often, the prof. won't help with much.
Kirkpatrick is a nice guy, but his test are very dificult. The lectures are almost worthless because the tests aren't on what he lectures about most of the time. Not a terrible teacher, it is just very hard to understand the material from his lectures.
Tests don't reflect the lecture material very closely, but they are do-able and he did allow us to drop our lowest grade(though that is not his usual policy). He's a little disorganized, but approachable and a nice guy. Spend a lot of time with the text. I came out of the class with a "B+".
Tests are difficult but nice guy and willing to help his students when needed.. be prepared to work hard!
He is a very nice guy but a bad teacher and words problems weird. I had a very strong chemistry background and barley got an A. Do all the pratice problems and go to office hours!
Very nice guy but he is not very efficient at teaching. Material covered in class does not match up with tests. Do well on tests because that's the only thing he'll grade. Go to the TA help sessions or his office hours for help.
Ummm...the man is nice, that's about all that can be said. Exams don't match up with lacture so be prepared to memorize the book.
He is not helpful at all. I asked a question and he told me to read the book! The "cheat-sheet" did not help. The test was still harder than it should have been!
This guy is amazing! He is the nicest prof i have ever had and he went out of his way to help the students. If you pay attention in class and do the suggest problems then the tests will be easy. He doest throw in any tricks. I would recomond taking this guy!!

URRR I do not hate him but it is very close When he does examples on the board he goes through it but does not explain how he got from step 1 to step 2 he instantly jumps from step 1 to step 5 and says do it They are much more difficult than the practice problems You would think since many have failed he would be easier & explain more and slower
he's pretty cool. make sure you read cause he doesn't cover all of the material in class. take the practice tests online cause his tests are almost the same. he's good about questions, so if you don't understand a step simply raise your hand and he'll break it down. its a pretty easy a.
He was the better of the 2 teachers (DeLerosa). He really tries to teach it all but there's too much to cover in class. I recommend him but make sure you do the homework problems (he doesn't make you do homework.. just for practice) and the old tests that he posts online. It's not hard if you put effort and studying into it.
His class is pretty easy if you do the problems and read the chapters. Definitely do not get behind though!!! Make sure to do practice test and he is very approachable if you need help or have a question!
Very approachable. very friendly. watch out though! the material on the tests is made much harder than it was presented in class. DO ALL THE HOMEWORK PROBLEMS!!!!! and read the book too! you should always choose Dr. Kirkpatrick over De La Rosa ANY day!
His tests are a lot harder than the examples he gives or even a lot of the homework problems. He teaches straight out of the book so READ! He doesn't really teach anything that isn't in the book so a lot of people tend not to go to class. Even if his tests are hard, do not take De La Rosa, choose Kirkpatrick over him any day!

Tests don't correspond with class lecture. Don't go to class, just read and understand the book!
good teacher, quite helpful, but tests arent as easy as they sound when he talks about them in the class, i will recommend him,,,,

His lectures are like lullabies. At least I'm pretty sure they are because nobody went to them. He somehow finds a way to make easy concepts hard. If you are taking Chem you don't really have a choice but if you do, stay away.
There really isn't a point in going to class, the stuff on tests doesn't really match up with what he goes over in class. Read the book, do the homework problems he assigns. Nice guy though, whenever I went to him with questions he was very helpful.
I had De la Rosa last semester and even though everyone said he was hard, I think Kirkpatrick is worse. He doesn't explain things well, and his tests do not match his lectures...they are so much harder than anything he does in class. Even though I got a good grade in chem last semester, I'm haveing a hard time now.
Nice guy, not so great on the teaching.
had both for 161 and 162 - very cool professor, but professor nonetheless, so still difficult. very fair. very nice and approachable, as boring as his lectures are. RECOMMENDED.
I am a senior now, folks and I hope you take my advice. I had kirkpatrick the second semester and I got a "D". The second semester stuff is much harder and boy did he make it difficult. Take DE LA ROSA if you don't want a bad grade people. I've heard he will be changing the class format. STAY AWAY FROM THIS GUY FOR SECOND SEMESTER.
Really nice guy, but moves too fast on complex topics and too slow on easy ones. Lectures are a pain, but tolerable. Tests are abomidable.
Very nice man but not a great lecture teacher. Seems bored with the material frequently. Moves very slowly through some basic topics, wasting time that could be used on the more complicated ones.
Kirkpatrick is a helpful and knowledgeable professor, but his lectures are basically useless. Don't take this class if you are not a pre-med or a chem major. If you do take this class, get the solutions manual and go through problems in the book. His tests are really easy if you took A.P chem and did well, otherwise his tests are very tough.
Easy tests if you have a background in chemistry. Otherwise, students seem to have a hard time. Go over the problems he assigns and old tests, and you'll do fine.
i dont know what he is like as a teacher since i never went to class pass the first day. i took a year and a half of chem in high school and i thought just by looking over old tests & refreshing my memory i did fine with an A test average. his tests are mostly multiple choice with a few problems but usually same format as his last ones...
I've never seen such blatant abuse of the "none of the above" choice.
If you go through the textbook, thoroughly understand the material, and do the problems you will do well in this class. Constant review of the material is very helpful. Kirkpatrick and/or the Chem TAs can help you greatly. Take advantage of opportunities and you can pass this.
He's a really nice guy, but a terrible teacher. Tests rarely related to the material that was discussed in class and was never the same as the "suggested" homework.
This class was somewhat difficult. Lectures were somewhat boring (most of the time), and the tests were pretty much impossible. LOTS of extra work is required. Dr. Kirkpatrick is, however, a really pleasant man and is willing to help you.
He taught pretty much right out of the book. Class was usually mostly practice problems. You can probably learn everything on your own from the book if you are a good chem person. Tests were extremely difficult and often time was an issue.
The class is a ridiculous excuse for education. He is a terrible professor. He teaches one thing (if you want to call it teaching) and then puts abotuer on the test. If you learn well from teaching yourself, then this is the professor for you. You have to re-teach yourself everything after lecture. Tests are RIDICULOUS and IMPOSSIBLE!
Dont go to class. Its pointless. If you go, you'll only sleep during it. STUDY in advance for tests and have all the info down. Tests are really hard, and there is not a lot of time, so you have no time to think about the problems. Problems from class or old tests are nothing like the tests. Hes a nice guy if you need help, but good luck on tests!
Dr. Kirkpatrick is a really nice person and is generally concerned about his students. His lectures get you to think, but can be boring at times. Pay attention to all problems done in class; they will appear on the exam. Study more from previous exams than chapter problems. Memorize equations and conversions. Exams are difficult, but not impossible
Dr. KP b/c is a nice guy and funny, and simply good-hearted. BUT, i would not advice taking his class. Many ppl dont even show up to his class b/c he barely teaches and is horrible at doing so. If you do come to class, make sure to copy the problems he does on the board. Tests are very hard; includes things he barely taught. Read through the chaps.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! He does not teach a lot, and you end up teaching it all to yourself from the book. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Avoid him at all cost indeed. His test questions are so random and you can't expect to get 100 on his test (except first one). there is no need to go to his class. try your best to change your professor. Only class I got A- at SLU.(rest As)
Dr. Kirkpatrick was extremely fair and helpful with the material. All of the people complaining about him are pre-med biology majors who wouldn't know an atomic particle if it hit them in the face. If you are interested in chemistry, you need to take this class.
Dr. Kirkpatrick is really nice and approachable, but I did not learn in his class. It seems as if the powerpoints he uses and what he lectures on are disconnected in my opinion. His tests are really hard and you have to teach yourself the material. I don't think I got a good foundation for chem in his class. Take him only if you have to.
kirkpatrick is a great guy. he is nice but and really approachable, but the important thing is that his class is worthless. he put me to sleep in everyone of them. i literally have to struggle to stay up. for exams. study yourself.dont rely on him teaching you because everyone knows that will never happen. not great, but better than other chem prof
Doesn't really teach, read the book.
Take anyone but him
I am a premed and I took him for both semesters of Chemistry. I think Kirkpatrick is wonderful. Chemistry is a difficult subject and can be a source of frustration for many students, but Kirkpatrick does an excellent job in lecture--especially considering the large class size. He is laid back, genuinely cares about students, and keeps class fun.
Dr. Kirkpatrick is a really nice guy and he's very helpful if you go to him during his office hours. However I do not think he covers the material adequately. He posts his old tests online, so if you want to do well you'll do all of them. His tests are very difficult and there's no curving.
Really difficult even though I had taken chem in the past. He goes over the basics of all chem principles, but puts the most difficult problems on his tests. Watch out for test 2, typically people do the worst on this test. Advice: you won't get an A if you don't put some time into the class, study for each test at least 2 days in advance
He's very conceptual, but tends to get off topic. He'll spend most of the semester telling you what you'll learn in Chem II. Make sure you follow the in-class problems closely; he'll definitely put those on the exam. Don't study the night before. There's too much information for one night. Read section reviews in textbook.
He's very conceptual. Tends to get off topic. You'll spend most of the semester hearing about what you'll learn in Chem II. Follow the in-class problems carefully. Those will be the ones on the exam. Use book problems as further practice for in-class problems. Read section reviews in book. If you don't understand something, ask a friend with Kowert
Don't buy into the hype, Kirkpatrick isn't terrible at all. Sure, I could miss the occasional class and get by with only reading the textbook and doing the homework, but when I attended class, the explanations he used stuck in my mind, and were helpful. He's great in office hours too. Just do the homework, and you'll get an A like I did.
He was definitely a nice and helpful professor, but I don't think that he was that great at teaching the lessons. His lectures we're extremely boring and it took him forever just to get through a couple of slides. I would strongly recommend reading the book because the lectures don't give you enough information. The tests are not easy.
Kirkpatrick is a wonderful professor who wants his students to do well. Be sure to do all the assignments and homework problems. His tests are difficult however, so studying is a must!
Easy intro chem course, just read the book to cover what he doesn't have time to go over in great depth in class. Went to class maybe half the time, didn't study, and pulled an A. If you have had any chem before, you'll be absolutely fine.
Maybe he used a teaching style I wasn't used to, but I could not follow a word he was saying. I read all the chapters, did his recommended problems, and I never passed a single test. When I asked him for help, all he said was, "Quality vs quantity of studying."
The Bible says that God rested on the seventh day. Dr. Kirkpatrick took over for him on that day. His intellectual prowess is unchallenged. In fact, I heard a rumor that the chemistry department has a shrine to him in Monsanto. Chemistry should study him.
Just have to know how to study to do well. Make sure to do all the homework problems and the practice tests. You should be fine!
More #based than lil b.
Intro to chem is not hard, just very fast paced. Only grades come from 3 tests and a final. He says book is required, its not cuz there is no homework, but to study for the tests you will need it since there is a lot of info. Posts all previous tests and solutions online but his handwriting is crappy.----------
Awesome guy. Fun, charismatic, but not a coherent teacher. Although Chemistry is difficult enough to grasp, his lectures could have been more structured, and he could have explained some topics better.
Chem with Kirkpatrick is an overall mediocre experience. That being said, it's probably not his fault. If you've taken an advanced or AP Chem in high school and have to take this class, it will move at a dreadfully slow pace for the majority of the year. Exams are pretty straightforward and will teach you how to succeed in future chem classes.
Really good guy that is very interesting. Lectures are usually pretty good but sometimes can be boring. Do the homework problems and definitely the practice exams and it isn't too bad. I took college chem junior year of high school which made it a lot easier.
Chuck is the reason I go to class everyday. His molecules of the week make Mondays bearable. Fun fact: he owns a bird store. Words cannot describe this man. Take his class at any cost.
I took AP Chem in high school, got a 4 on the exam, and still had to take intro chem, which was irritating, since I wanted to move on to better things. However, Chuck pretty much ruined it. I loved chem in high school, and now I hate it. I DO NOT recommend him. Came in a chem major, and now I'm switching to business.
Average professor. Nothing special. His lectures are all power points and very boring. I took general chem in high school and that might have been one reason why it was so boring. Not a bad guy though.
He's a great guy but a BORING professor. Attendance not mandatory as well as homework. If you want to pass then DO the homework!! Definitely a weed out class. Loved chem now hate it. Walked in as a Chem major and now am a French major. AVOID HIM.
Dr. K was probably the best professor for me because he reassured me that me majoring in Biochem was a good idea. Although his lectures can be boring at times, he works through problems and makes you do weekly quizzes that help you keep up with the pace of the class. Aside from the ppt lectures, his class was fun and interesting.
The only grades you will receive are from the 3 test and the final. You do not have to go to class but it is hard to keep up with the optional hw questions when you dont, making the test much harder to study for. Very nice guy and a good teacher but you will have to work for the A, which is an 85% or greater. The solutions manual i did NOT buy.
Really nice guy but class is very difficult and boring. Your grade is based on 3 tests and your final exam. Like most students, I procrastinated and did not study unless a test was coming up. Be proactive and you should be fine! Timing on exams is sort of difficult. I do not think there are many better alternatives for chem at SLU. Better than lab!
Chemistry is simply difficult. For me, attending lectures and doing a few problems was not enough and I should have read the book more and done more problems. I wasn't thrilled with the way he explained the material and depended rather heavily on my high school education which thankfully was good. Plan for more studying than you would expect.
I didn't take AP chem in highschool, so I had to put in a lot of extra work preparing for the tests, mainly because it was all new material. I managed to get an A on all 3 exams, but I studied my *** off with at least 14 hours per week 2 weeks before the exam. (probably more than you will need to do) Study hard and you will do fine.
Really nice guy, lectures can be kinda dry sometimes but try to pay attention. DO THE HOMEWORK it may not be mandatory but its sooo helpful. Start studying for tests at least a week before and if you're struggling at the beginning get help right away. GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS, they will go over what'll most likely be on the test.
Kirkpatrick is a good professor. His lectures are a little boring since it is mostly just flipping through powerpoint slides. However, he posts past tests online with answers which are pretty similar to the in-class tests. Class attendance is not mandatory but highly suggested. Test 3 was the most difficult in my opinion.
I had Dr. Kirkpatrick for chem I. I didn't take chemistry in high school, so I was weary about taking his class. Its certainly not easy- you'll have to work for it, but its worth it. He's a good professor and I would defiantly recommend him to first year students.
Chemistry, in general, is tough. After the second test it seemed like a third of the class dropped (weed-out pre-med class). Lectures are dry, not mandatory to go, but defiantly helpful. Go to SI Sessions, most helpful thing I've ever went to. 2nd test is the toughest. DO THE HW, so helpful. Use online practice tests they are the same thing as test
Dr. Kirkpatrick was a good professor. He gave good clear lecture, pretty dry though so it was tough to pay attention. Probably the best option for chemistry as long as you can make yourself pay attention. Tests are difficult if you don't study, but as long as you stay on top of sapling and understand the test topics it's easy
This class sucks if you aren't interested in chemistry. Be prepared. Chuck is awesome though.
I earned a lot from Kirkpatrick but had already taken the class through AP in high school. I found it more productive to read the chapters and do the problems to prepare for the test than focus 100% on the homework. He gives us enough resources to do well on the exams, and I don't think the exams are terrible, I would definitely recommend
I'd give him a 5 for personality, and if I could be more specific, I'd put the class at a 3.5 difficulty. He doesn't try making it hard. It's just that it's chemistry, of course it's going to be relatively difficult. I'd take him again, especially with the nightmares I've heard about the other gen chem lecturer.
Kirkpatrick is an amazing teacher but chemistry is hard. Even if you put in the time the class will still be difficult. I would most definitely take again. PLEASE utilize Kirk outside of class he really wants it help. Great guy, great teacher, difficult class
I had Chem 1 with Kirkpatrick, and it was the worst thing I have ever sat through. He explained everything in the worst, confusing ways, and things only make sense if you already know what you're doing. He barely gives practice problems, and just reads off the slides with no clarification. Tests are almost literally impossible. Overall, NO!
Guy is amazing. Gives exams and lots of practice. He wants you to succeed. Honestly, too easy to pass. He so nice. Nice guy. Beautiful man.
The class is pretty tough and material/lecture heavy. Only 3 tests plus one cumulative final. He follows the material well, and sometimes gets off topic. Take it upon yourself to really study and understand the material. Just going to class won't help. Go to SI!! Pretty chill dude though
Curriculum can be difficult if you try to cram the night before an exam, but it isn't too bad if you review every night. Overall, kirkdaddy is a good man and really wants his students to pass.
There was no point in going to lectures. He often spent more time than necessary on one slide and usually went off topic. The problems we did in lecture are not even close to the ones on the exams. I found ALEKS to be not that beneficial. Even though it was some type of practice, I found that it was not helpful in preparing for exams.
Don't bother going to class. Just read the book, and go through his powerpoints on your own. I had never received below an A in my life, but this class proved to be a struggle for me. Old tests are helpful, especially my year's because he made ours especially difficult in comparison to previous years. Good person, but def a weed-out course, gl.
It is not Kirkpatrick's fault that this class is so hard, but he does not make it better. Go to class and listen!! Kirkpatrick gets a lot of his test questions right off the slide. My advice to you is to continuously study and take notes while doing aleks. The textbook kinda helps. This was by far the hardest class I have ever taken.
Kirkpatrick is a good guy who seems to care about his students. Chemistry at SLU is very difficult (weed-out), but his lectures didn't help much. I didn't study as much as I should have, so my advice would be to study every day (do not cram!!) and work through all of the in-class problems.
His lectures are hard to pay attention to, and most of your grade comes from homework assignments on ALEKS and exams. No extra credit or wiggle room, but if you take good notes and make sure to review you should pass
Kirkpatrick is a nice guy, and it isn't his fault that Gen Chem is run horribly by SLU. He does what he can, but the lectures are pretty worthless, most of this class is doing it on your own.
Chuck is a funny guy. Chem is naturally going to be hard but he seems really excited about everything. Tests arent super difficult but you have to work for your grade
Kirkpatrick was a good professor for chem 1. ALEKS will take up most of your time and can be frustrating to do sometimes. Tests are straightforward and are similar to past years' tests, use these to study. Let recitation worksheets be your friend and you'll be fine. Class can be boring, but you can tell he tries and is passionate about chemistry.
He posts his lecture slides and old tests online. If you go over the slides and old tests, you will be fine. But he is very nice to answer any questions you have.
Better option that most chem teachers. It took me 3 tests to figure this out. To do well on his tests, go over in class problems, lecture slides, chem recitation worksheets, and past 3 years of tests.
Dr. K is a cool dude. He tries to make chemistry interesting and relatable to actual real world things. Chemistry is just a hard class. He is one of the better choices for chemistry professors. You have to look back at the old tests because he usually repeats some of the questions in a different format on the regular exams.
Kirpatrick's a good teacher and cares about students. You can definitely get an A in his class by 1) Making a study guide for each test using the lecture slides and textbook, 2) Doing all the recitation problems for the unit and understanding them, 3) Doing the past 3 years tests and the practice test and understanding what you got wrong.
Go to class and actually take notes. He has one of the most boring voices and it makes it so hard to pay attention but just try your best to take avid notes or rewatch lectures. Tests are so hard be prepared for half the class to drop this class after the 2nd test. If you take GOOD notes and study you can get an A but its harder said than done
Nice guy, but chem is hard esp at SLU. Lectures are eh. Theyre all recorded so attendance doesnt matter. Hes pretty lenient with ALEKS deadlines which is nice. ALEKS is painful but free points. His tests are def harder than some of the other profs but are similar to his old tests so study off those and the recitation worksheets.
Professor Kirkpatrick is a good chemistry professor. He can sometimes run through the material fast and his lectures are good not great, but he is very friendly and relaxed about the class. He's not strict and makes some funny jokes. Exams aren't too difficult if you study well. He does a great job giving out review materials and practice exams.
His communication could be better and doesn't like to clarify what he says. He expects you to get everything the first time.
