Not as bad as a lot of people say he is.
One of the best profs I have had

he may know what he's talking about, but does not have the ability to teach it to the students. smart man, just a horrible professor

Had him for lab, very helpful but a hard grader. You spend all day long writing what you did in the lab, he wants every single tiny little detail. But he is a nice person

I don't know why he thinks his class is the hardest class on campus! It's really easy. He talks about the most random things, and makes up assignments just so people come in for help. He does help when you come in though.
Never has time for students.
I am repeating this course and he is a very smart man and he will answer your questions until you understand. Compared to the prof I had last year Dr. Lake rocks.
i dropped the class cause i had an F. I have an A in every other class. I am repeating next semester.
Very good professor. He knows what he is talking about, and he enjoys teaching. Very helpful in answering questions during class and office hours. You must do your homework for the class though, if you don't, then your grade will suffer.
He's smart. Too smart. He assumes that I know what he's talking about. Not to mention, he ignores me when I have my hand up. And his assignments are really stupid. He'll have you write a paper, but he won't take it unless you also hand in the instructions
His grading scale varies which is a good thing. He also gives extra credit that are 10 points on every test...so make sure you do the extra credit and the hoemwork...watch out for the pop quizzes but if the homework is done don't worry.
Unfair grading. Sloppy notes. Should be an independent-study course
This man is smart, but he is unfair in his grading. He doesn't know how to create notes for us to follow very well. He doesn't answer questions in a straight forward way. This guy is a moron. I hate this guy with all my passion.
don not take this professor. if you do, don't buy the textbook. his notes are confusing, and he moves really fast, expecting the class to get everything on the first try. his assignments are stupid but easy, but there is a lot of material on the tests.
Unreasonable, egocentric, stubborn, unclear, confusing, very unhelpful, and over passionate. The last being the worst, because he holds our expectations to his level of passion when this is merely another required Liberal study by IUP.
HE SUCKS, STAY AWAY!! He is the worst professor I have had in three years of college. His teaching skills suck, and talks about his students behind their backs. He expects you to get everything on the first try...he should not be teaching.
He doesn't listen when you have a question. His tests aren't too hard but you need to study hard for them.
He moves fast and expects you to know things very quickly. he is not helpful at all and gives hard time consuming homeworks (for attendence) If you take hime you'll be SORRY
BY FAR the worst teacher i have ever had in my four years of college. You take him you will Def. regret it tremendously
omg i cant beleive ppl talk bad of him! i look for easy teachers & he is it, at least 4 lab. he cuts out most of our work and lets us goof around during lab. i think he's so funny and chill. i hate chem ,but lab is one of my fav. classes cause of him.
HE IS SO EASY, the others are crazy...u just have to study the study sheets for an hour for his tests and are guaranteed an A. he gives studysheets before each tests & the test questions come from those sheets..EASY EASY EASY! dont buy the book for class
I agree with the last person. Only a moron would fail this course. I like the policy, come to class pass the course. Some of the stories are actually interesting.
Yeah, he gives you study guides w/answers to 75% of the test. That doesn't make up for how rude he is. He treats everyone like they're stupid. He has favorites. He gives us fill in the blank tests so we learn something. Doesn't he know it's not our major.
This excuse for a human being is the MOST arrogant, unhelpful, RUDE, jerk I have ever met in my life. If you ask a question he will make you look stupid infront of 200 other students. He is a smart man but does not belong in a classroom.
Worse professor ever!
top candidate for worst teacher of the year, hard class w/ lots of people, tests are a lot of memorization, pop quizes left and right, homework is a pain, favorites, ****, tests are a b*tch, people say he is easy in lab, but he sucks in class, stayaway
I would copy everything I suggested he change in here but it would take up too much space. The reviews are a waste since he doesn't make sure we get the right answers, I like the attendence policy but he never returns the worksheets. He's very rude.
I can't believe people are whining about this class - my cat could get a B !
The best prof. I've ever had. VERY, VERY helpful, taught in a way I could understand chem. His policies make it very easy to pass as long as you put forth an effort. Intelligent, helpful, challenging so you learn. If you flunk, you're an idiot!
nice guy, knows chem well. spent a lot of time in lab with two chicks by the heater. I did pretty well. he'll help u if u ask or need it. friendly but did get short with a few people but they were morons. u can definately pass this class if u do the work.
good prof. no reason for people to complain just b/c they are 2 dumb 2 pass. if u wear something low-cut he'll look! he needs to hookup w/ the girl in lust w/ him! he tells u what is on the tests. our class was full of people that'll never graduate!
He rocks! Keeps class exciting. Take him!!!!!
4 tests, 10 quizes, long lab reports, extra credit opportunities can really make a difference. some test ?'s are from homework, so that helps. overall, you can pass if you try and do the work. friendly professor, will help you no matter what.
He's evil. He gave me a B.
excellent prof for chem. this man knows his stuff! if you are willing to learn he is willing to teach. therefore, if this is the case you will not be upset. good man chuckie is.
Definately one of my fav. prof. ever. He helped me so much, no matter how difficult I was. He does know his stuff, u can tell he gives a sh*t about the students. Take him if you are willing to learn chem!!!
I really liked his teaching style. Made a hard subject easier by being helpful. Friendly and always willing to help those who help themselves. Doesn't seem fond of Western PA.
Extremely helpful prof who is willing to help anyone who comes to office hours. I ended up with a C but he was an excellent teacher and considering you are taking chemistry a very difficult discipline, You should expect hard work. I highly reccomend.
I have him right now. I think hes a great professor and I am looking foreward to having him again for chem 114.
Excellent teacher & expects u to work hard! He'll push u along if u are failing but forget the A if u have a B, no matter what u do. His expectations & teaching are clear. I'm still wary from the times he snapped at me in his office & was short with me, as though I wronged him. Still a great guy!!!
You'll work alot in this class but it's interesting. The only bad thing is the almost weekly lab reports that are at least 5 pages, sometimes as many as 12 or 13.
Chuckie is a great prof! Makes u to learn & that'll help u in later years of chem, but, like all IUP chem profs., he LOVES the A student- too much. If you can deal with him being moody @ times & thinking we are all just out of high school, living in a dorm with endless study time, take him for sure!
Dr. Lake, I think hes a good teacher. After all he teaches chemistry which is a "VERY VERY" important subject. Is everyone ok with that? Does this make sence? haha... Dr. Lake is a great teacher, I reccomend him to everyone.
He is hard as heck..but very smart and willing to get you past the class. Favors the nerds. Study hard and you will be fine.
Dr. Lake was a very helpful professor that was always there to clarify any questions I had about the homework or concepts I didn't understand.
Excellent professor. If I could give more clarity points I would. His lectures were superb, and he spells out what he wants done for each lab beforehand. No lab reports by the way, just fill in the blank and essays (for our class, anyhow), and I hear his office hours sessions are very helpful.
Dr. Lake will teach you a lot. He's amazingly clear. BUT, you have to hold up your end of the deal. Ask questions, and never be afraid of him.
Dr. Lake is the biggest...well you get the picture! Hated him when i took him. Called him a few choice names. Needless to say I didn't pass the class. I got a A the first semester with another prof and a D the second semester with him. Whats that tell you? He loves to hate.
He is not easy but he will take time during office hours to help you.
Dr. Lake is great! He helped me through both courses so much. He really cares and will help you if you ask. You really learn in his class, its not just memorization like any other class. Don't take his class if you are not willing to work hard.
he sucks... don't ask questions cuz he makes you feel even MORE stupid...
Nice Guy, Always willing to Help if needed.. Go to class and Do your homework you should be fine. But you have to be willing to work hard..
I had this guy for chem 101 LAB,so don't know what hes like in lecture... pretty good prof in most aspects except help, that is don't ask for any!!he won't give you so much as a hint, NO EXCEPTIONS! If you are one of those do-gooder super students that enjoys "a challenge" and learning everything 100% on your own w/ zereo guidance, this is the guy
Complete IDIOT! i had him for lab, he refuses to help when you ask for it and makes you feel stupid. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Worst Prof. at this school! Doesn't help you and doesn't give you any breaks. Unless you are already a chem-wiz, don't take him!
worst ever.................. never take him

Horrible...makes you feel so stupid for asking questions. Do not take him unless thats all that is left.

Yeah, he's not so great. He'll try to help you, but in his attempts, he just belittles you and makesyou feel stupid. I'm terrible at chem and he made me feel like an ***hole all the time. His tests are impossible, but he gives homework everyday and extra credit with every test. Taking him would be a mistake. Don't do it.
Dr. Lake isn't very clear about things. He tends to go very quickly and he encourages you to ask questions however when you do he doesn't want to try to explain it more clearly he almost acts annoyed and that it is your fault if you don't get it. I wouldn't suggest taking his class!
Worst prof I have had in my 3.5 years of college. Totally miserable man. Little to no respect for anyone having trouble in chemistry.
this professor is the worst ever!! he is hard and doesnt explain! he gets mad if u ask questions! he thinks the students should already know it!he also belittles people! doesnt not help anyone! his test are impossible. each one is 150 and question are over 12 pts each! he is a complete jerk. DO NOT TAKE HIM its not worth your time or money!
Do not this class unless you know chemistry very well! Not helpful at all, extremely cocky, rude, and the students are always wrong. He lies on the first day of class and tells every he is willing to help you and he wants to make chem easy, but it is a lie. He curves the grades, but it only benefits the smart students. DO NOT TAKE, YOU WILL REGRET!
I wouldn't mind seeing him hit by a car... lets put it that way.
Not very helpful at all. Isn't really willing to answer questions. Makes you feel like an idiot whenever you ask him questions. Calls you out and embarrasses you when you make mistakes. DO NOT take him unless you are in a major that absolutely needs chemistry.
worst professor i've ever had. total jerk. does nothing except talk about other people in lab. doesn't offer any help, most rude man i've ever had. unless you enjoy chemistry it's impossible to pass the class even though i've never missed a session or skipped a homework i still have no idea what this man is talking about. complete jerk.
He's a good teacher, its just his class material is tough. He explains stuff in class, but if someone asks a question he'll kinda explain it his own way, not really answering the question. He's funny at times during lab, but lets his Assistant do most of the stuff. I'd prefer to not ask him for help, but hes not to bad overall.
One of the worst professors ive ever had. dont ever take him. but if you do have to, you will be so entertained by him and everything he does and says. hes good for a laugh, thats for damn sure.
I think Dr. Lake is a great professor. He made everything in class clear. You will actually learn something from him. But you have to study, do the homework, and go see him if necessary. If you don't have a sense of humor- don't take him. He's a funny guy and will make you laugh until you cry. Dr. Lake is the man!
he is by far the worst professor i have ever had. myself, along with more then half the class failed his class. he isn't helpful at all. DONT EVER TAKE HIM.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! one of the worst teachers i have ever had at IUP. He doesn't care about his students and is very hard.
HORRIBLE
He is not bad at all, he is so smart, and so helpful. the material is very difficult if you are unfamiliar with it. but you learn so so much. Take him if you want to actually learn chemistry.
He was willing to help, but not thoroughly. He would breeze through your questions and not help you step by step when you needed it. Friendly, but not a great teacher.
I'm just not sure about Dr. Lake. He is a nice enough guy, and he tells you up front what to expect, but for some reason, I just could not follow his class. His lecture is pretty difficult, but his lab is fantastic. I would most def. take him for lab again, but I would not reccommend taking his lecture. He is not very helpful in lab, but he's easy.
Acts like very willing to help but isn't.. expects you to already know the topics before taught
Dr. Lake is not downright mean but he isn't friendly. His rushes through lecture material too quickly and encourages students to ask questions but he seems to be annoyed and impatient in answering them. He can also belittle you in front of the class. He assigns graded homework every day of class, which can be difficult. His labs are also hard.
He is a tough professor, but he is very eager to help out if needed. As long as you go to class and do all the homework assignments its not too bad becuase most of the test questions come from the homework. So if you dont mind doing 15-20 mins of homework each night to get a good grade take this professor.
Good prof. I took his class in the spring and then retook it in the summer. If you you have problems with the class during a regular semester take it again in the summer, you'll have more time to work on things and dr. lake has more time to teach you. Good prof. but the material is hard and work on your part is required!!!!
Dr. Lake is a terrible teacher. First of all he coughs during class. He runs through all the notes he needs to right for the day. His apperance is terrible. A beard that needs shaved and the clothes makes him look like he just came out of a barn. He only talks to the kids up front. He doesn't help at all. Don't take his class. If was terrible.
he is by far the worst professor ive ever had, when answering a question he answers you like youre an idiot, he shouldnt be considered a professor, isnt helpful at all..if you want fail, be stressed out and waste all of your time, then feel free to take him, other then that DONT DO IT!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! he is the worst teacher i have ever had. i had him for both lab and class. he doesnt answer your questions with answers he answers them smart ass comments. He is always trying to get out of office hours/work. his notes are very poor and he skips lots of steps in solving problems. the si student was a better teacher than lake.
After the first two test 50% of the people in my class dropped out then in the other 50%, he told us close to half of us were failing the class his class is so hard you are required to do so much work to be able to pass i studied seriously 10 hours for test and still couldnt pass. if your taking chem just as a requirement do not take him it is hell
Dom't take him. i don't know how this man still has a job! He does nothing to better his class. He rushes through the notes and you end up taking 6 pages and have no idea what half of them mean. He is rude to the students, and makes fun of them in the classroom. I would like to meet the person who gave him his job, and smack him or her in the face!
AVOID HIM!!!!! very hard to understand and the class just sucks, especially tues thurs class wow i want to die sitting through this class. this guy needs to stop assuming we've all had chem.
Horrible professor. Not very willing to help even when you go to see him. So hard to understand what he is trying to say in class. If you can take another professor!!!
Dr. Lake is awful. He seems so cool and helpful, but then you ask a question and he gets in your face in front of the whole class. He is not very friendly. Don't take him unless you have a passion for chemistry and can teach yourself.
This man is the worst teacher i've ever had in my entire life. He puts his notes up on the board, and leaves not even a second for questions and moves onto his next topic. AVOID THIS TEACHER!!!! horrible teacher. His failing rate is pretty much his whole class. just don't do it!!
Why would you take any class from a professor who tells you that he has failed entire classes before and has problem doing it again? He is not helpful when you go ask for help. He just sites there and mostly makes fun of you for not knowing what your doing like your wasting his time. AVOID HIM!!!!
not very helpful at all
DO NOT TAKE!!! He goes over stuff soooo fast and its impossible to understand, you go home at night and just stare at the homework becuase you have no ides how to do it, cuz he doest tell you how to do it he just puts it on the board and expects you to understand, worst decision of my college carrer so far was taking this guy for Chem.
Does not seem to care about the grades of his students.
Great teacher. Tests were fairly difficult but if you pay attention in class you should be fine. VERY easy to find if you need any help on any assignment. Very nice at office hours. If you don't come to class, pay attention in class, or go to office hours (which means do nothing) THEN you are S.O.L. for this class. Seemed like a good prof to me
I loved Dr. Lake! He taught in a way that was totally understandable to me. I hardly ever had to review notes because I got it the first time. He is always willing to help in office hours. I appreciated how he went over EVERY assignment we turned in to make sure we understood. If you go to class you will be fine, if you don't you'll be in trouble
I don?t like to be rude but he needs to find something else to do other than teach; he is smart. He doesn't explain material, his writing is horrible & he is unprofessional. I asked him for help & was told "figure it out yourself";he humiliated the student next to me also for asking a question. I withdrew;I prefer to graduate with honors not fail.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. DONT EVEN CONSIDER TAKING HIM. His tests are literaly impossible, we could only hope he gets in a head on collusion soon and saves us from actually failing the class, there is no way in hell there the class average is passing, he'll lie and tell you that though cause he likes to lie.
Studying for exams in this class is basically useless because you're going to fail them anyways and since the whole course is based on them you will most likely not pass. His style of teaching blows and I actually think he enjoys failing students. He says anyone can pass which is a complete lie. I have no idea why this guy is still employed at IUP.
no idea how this man is still employed at IUP. he is rude, loves failing students and if you have a question in lab he'll make you feel like youre a total idiot. HATE him. wouldn't recommend him to my worst enemy.
I hate this guy... He says in the beginning of the course that everyone can pass all you have to do is show up and take notes...LIES!!! Please. from one student to another. do yourself a favor and dont take this guy...Save your GPA now, and dont get screwed like i did!!!!
he is the most useless teacher i have ever had! i had to re take his class because i had a 44% that is with studing and doing homework. the homework wkshts are graded but the homework in the book isnt. we had 3 exams including the final. he mutilates the smallest things on the tests and homework. i dont reccomend him at all!
Great prof. Made learning chemistry a lot of fun. I disagree with previous posters about him mutilating small mistakes- I made some large mistakes and he still gave me over half of the pts for partial credit. He definitely wants you to figure things out- it's not HS he's not going to spoon feed. Great teacher & I learned a lot!!
i liked dr. lake. he's a good teacher and he knows what he's talking about. if you take him you will have to study quite a bit for the tests, but they're not impossible.
I definitely regret taking this class. His tests are virtually impossible and don't count on homework bringing your grade up because they're only worth 6 points each. He told us at the beginning of the semester that as long as you do your homework and come to class you'll pass. I did both and still failed along with everyone else in the class.
The worst teacher I have had my entire life. He was rude to me, humilated people in our lab. He was inappropriate and a horrible person!
Had him for chem 111 lab. He's a little picky on what he wants in his lab reports at first, but eventually if you follow his directions, he actually simplifies the report a lot. He does joke around sometimes, but I've never seen anything like what some of the other people here are talking about. Pretty solid lab prof overall.
He is the worst. this is my 3rd year here and i have never had to retake a class untill now. he is very rude. it is clear to me that he has no social skills so dont even try to ask him for help!! i am retaking it right now and i have an A what does that tell you!! DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!
His class was pretty hard, I got a B, 3 tests and then 1 final, about 10 graded homeworks that you turn in. I only had him for lecture, but everyone in my lecture that had him for lab hated him, and I would advise against taking him for lab. He is very arrogant and puts you down in lab for asking questions. If you go to class you should be fine.
If you have half a brain don't take this guy. I had him for a pre-summer session course and he was terrible. I wanted to blow my brains out ever day. He wouldn?t answer any questions in lab. In class he had no answer for you besides "FACTOR LABEL". If I could do it all over again I would never had taken him. I would even put graduating off fo
I took Dr. Lake for both CHEM111 and 112. I really don't know why everyone is complaining- he was ALWAYS availible during office hours to help and made learning chemistry fun! And factor label is a great way to make sure you don't make mistakes in ANY science course! I used skills Dr. Lake taught me in my physics and math courses.
Dr. Lake is an intelligent professor who actually ASKS his students to work for their grades. I wasn't even a chem major and I enjoyed his class so much!!! He was always friendly and availible for help. I recommend him to anyone who doesn't want to put up with b.s. !!
Dr. Lake is not the friendliest person but he knows a lot about chemistry. He likes his students to think for themselves, so don't take him if you expect to be spoon fed. His lectures are clear and informational and he loves when students attend his office hours, which I suggest you go to, the extra help makes a world of difference.
Unless you really love chemistry, i suggest you avoid taking his class.
I've never been more insulted by anyone in my life, let alone a professor. We hear daily that we are pathetic and are verbally put down. He he doesn't help you at all when you ask questions, only telling you you're wrong. He's rated so well because most of the negative comments were too inaproperiate to post. Very few huge exams. Grades hard.
Pros: Dr. Lake is very clear in his lectures. He spells out each problem in the book on the board and will do it again and again until the students understand it. Cons: You must do everything HIS WAY when solving problems- he will often go against the textbook methods, so make sure you take clear notes and understand the way HE wants you to do it.
Probably one of the stingiest graders I've ever had. He's overall not that bad of a guy but def. not one of the best teachers. Grading techniques aren't the best. We had our whole class not understand a concept but he refused to reteach it. Even his help sessions before tests are not helpful. I would not recommend taking him.
Dr Lake was.. interesting. He won't help you out... at all. Go to office hours though, even if you don't need help, it makes him like you. He isn't the nicest guy but get on his good side!
Awful professor. Doesn’t attempt to get to know students, refuses to answer questions, and doesn’t explain concepts very well. Personally, wouldn’t take him if I didn’t have too.
I can't ask him questions because he completely blows you off and just tells you to read the directions, which that would help if his directions actually made sense? I don't recommend having him as a lab teacher hes not helpful and rude.
He is a terrible teacher. He goes through material way to fast using power points. Doesnt use the $200 dollar textbook at all, other than to look at 10 homework problems form each chapter. He talks and teaches like everyone should already know this and he is extremely confusing, sometimes even mean. Dont ever take this class with him.
Absolute worst. I've never been the best at chemistry, but have always been ok at it. It got so bad that I had to withdrawal from the class and am taking it next semester with someone better. Dr. Lake is very rude and is NOT helpful in any way whatsoever. I e-mailed him asking for help and he never responded. Do not take him.
Dr. Lake is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. I failed the first test and emailed him for help two times and he choose to ignore them. He sucks at teaching and makes a million mistakes and its so hard to learn anything from his class. Only take him if you want to teach yourself everything!
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. He has the worst handwriting and is so bad at dumbing down chemistry. I emailed him asking for help after failing my first test and he choose not to respond. Also, do not buy the textbook its a waste of money. Try NOT to take him.
He is literally one of the worst teachers I've ever had. He's using a powerpoint because he "broke his hand" and blames the powerpoint for the reason why we're so behind. We'll cover so much information and says "does this make sense?" and moves on without actually seeing if we understand. Don't even think about taking him. You will hate your life
Worst professor, ever! He bases his tests and quizzes on how HE wants things to be done. He insults the lab professors and says that the book's way of doing things is stupid. He isn't helpful and doesn't explain anything clearly. If you ask what he meant, he will repeat what he said in the first place. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
If you've taken AP Chem or any Chem in high school, you should feel somewhat prepared. He gives you his powerpoints and expects you to look over the textbook and do homework problems on your own. He does make mistakes, but WILL give you points back if you tell him. He's not that bad if you actually try. Go to office hours and he'll love you.
Lake was an overall good professor and if needed, I would take a class taught by him again. The only thing that I have to complain about is that he talks super fast and always says the wrong thing or stutters. He always tries to rush through the lecture, which can be difficult at times. He is extremely willing to answer any questions.
I kept hearing everyone complain how difficult Lake was but I personally enjoyed him for Chem. The tests were difficult but once I started going to SI, I had no trouble getting a good grade on my tests. I didn't have to read a single page out of the book. The tests are straight off what he teaches, just have to pay attention and write good notes.
He was a good professor. He was able to tie in real life things to chemistry and make it interesting. He has a nice grading scale too.
I took this class during summer and it's achievable, but miserable. He was great for lecture but when we got into lab that shifted completely. He refused to help in anyway way. He answers everything with "you should know". For lecture he is good, but lab was torture. I did well by studying my butt off, but it sucked watching everyone else fail.
If you want to ask questions, don't. If you do, he'll either make you feel stupid or never give you an answer other than "figure it out" or "you should know". He made me cry multiple times for how rude he was and how little help he was to his students. He constantly talked down to us and seemed like he wanted us to fail. Don't take him. ever.
I love this professor. His teachings of chemistry are very clear and concise. If you love chemistry, he is the perfect professor, but if you're just taking chemistry as an elective, I don't recommend taking him because he is a very tough professor.
Do NOT be afraid to speak up during lecture. He goes through so much material very quickly. If you need clarification, speak up or use office hours.
Dr. Lake might be a good lecturer, but not a good lab professor. He barely helps you if you need it, he basically makes you figure it out on your own if you have a question. He isn't very clear on what he wants. Although, there is no midterm/final exam in his lab. I wouldn't take him again, but if I absolutely had to I probably would.
Here's the deal, take him if you WANT TO LEARN CHEMISTRY. He will make you work for your grade, but his class isn't THAT hard. He just makes you work more than other professors at IUP so kids aren't used to that. I learned more in his class than any other class I've had at IUP. Do the homework, study a week before the test and you will get an A.
Goes extremely fast in lecture, says he will slow down if you ask but gets obviously annoyed when you do. Gives homework that is helpful , however he doesn't always cover the homework material beforehand so you don'y always know what to do. Talks down on you if you go for help.. DON'T TAKE
Dr. Lake is not a good teacher whatsoever. He is so mean if you question anything and going to his office hours for help does nothing considering he just yells at you. He goes too fast in lecture and he grades extremely harsh. Only good thing is his grading scale because he grades harsh he gives 85 and above as an A. DONT miss a class!
He's tough the first couple weeks, but after everyone that cannot handle it drops the class, he has more fun with everyone. He moves really fast but he's a good professor. However, if you don't really want to learn chemistry or if you're not good at it I would recommend someone else.
Although Dr. Lake is a very tough grader, he was always willing to help. He also took interest in our majors and tried to get to know us. If you are taking him, attend every class and study hard. If you do so, you will be fine.
I couldn't have had a better experience. His tests can be difficult, but are fair. I got A's on all three. He is willing to help, but makes you think things through yourself and won't just give you the answer. He can have attitude sometimes, but doesn't mean it personally. He's trying to give students a solid basis for Chemistry.
Professor Lake moves extremely fast in his lectures. Also, be sure to go to class as much as possible. He doesn't put notes up online so in order for you to get the notes, you need to be in class. I'm not good at chemistry in general, but in my opinion so far the class is difficult for me. It's definitely possible to get an A though.
Charles talks really fast however the material is fairly easy. If you took AP in high school youll have no problem with the class. He isnt very clear about what to expect from the class. However an 85 in the class is an A which helps.
Dr. Lake is a solid choice if you want a good foundation for chemistry. He doesn't try to over-complicate things but makes sure you understand what you are doing. You will have daily homework but it's really helpful once the test comes around. It's not too hard to get an A in his class due to his grading scale. You just have to put the work in.
He made everything way more confusing than he needed to. He was often rude to my classmates. He also assigns homework without teaching the material and then grades you on it. Worst teacher ever. Do not take him unless you want frustration. Any of the other chem 101 teachers are much better than him.
Dr. Lake likes things one way, his way. Do things the way he wants it and you'll do fine in the class. He's not that bad of a guy but can be difficult. Talks very fast during lecture but will slow down, for 5 mins, if you ask. He does care about his students even if it doesn't seem like it.
He is a good guy outside of the classroom, and he really knows what he's talking about. This is definitely the hardest class I have taken so far. His lectures feel like they last forever and the material isn't easy unless you enjoy it. He's somewhat helpful in lab, but don't expect much
I asked to meet with him during office hours to go over the exam and he told me to work with another student. Hes extremely rude and doesnt help when you ask for it. I would not take him again.
Made me cry my second day of lab because he wouldn't explain anything at all and any time I had a question he would say "you should know this", "I don't know how you graduated high school without that knowledge", or he would walk away and ignore my questions. Extremely rude and unprofessional. Got made fun of and made me feel like I was stupid.
His notes aren't online so you have to go to class. He says that he's open to answering any questions or slowing down during lecture if you ask (he goes really fast) but when you ask a question he tells you that you should know it or he says to think harder. If you ask to go back he won't and says it isn't that important. Doesn't specify test dates
Very unwilling to teach
If you do not have a good chemistry background from high school, i advise choosing another teacher. Lake expects you to know what he's talking about, flips through slides when asked to wait, and is very confusing. If you do not do well on the exams, you will NOT pass the class as they are each worth 150 points and the final is 250. Terrible.
He's a good guy. you won't pass if you don't go to class. you have to pay attention too or you will not pass. Study!!
Hes hard but he knows what hes talking about so pay attention and youll do fine
a fool, dont even take him if youre not good at chem dont even try it. When you ask questions he ignores you or tells you to figure out like its not his job to explain himself if youre confused. He definitely discriminates and he flies through his PowerPoints and speaks so fast that it sounds like hes stuttering
He barely explains himself and is not a good professor
He flies through material in class and if you didnt get it the first time well... good luck. He test on material that was barely touched in class. You get disregarded if you ask a question in class and he makes you feel stupid for not knowing the answer. He skips steps in problems making it hard for people without a chem background to get it.
Professor Lake is obviously very smart and he knows what he is talking about but when it comes to explaining it is very difficult to understand. I had to self teach myself many things because he would talk so little about the topic. I would not recommend this class to somebody who hasnt taken chem in a couple of years.
This is such a sweet and caring man. I cannot count the number of times I've walked into his office only to see him deeply engaged with his students saying things like "You are so smart you know this," "Think through this you will figure it out" He encourages students to find the answer themselves and to actually think for themselves.
When asked questions about how to answer the lab questions, he would answer your questions with questions. If you didnt understand his question to your question he would then become mad and just not talk to you for the rest of the lab.
All exams were open ended and if you didn't do a math problem the way he wants it done, but get the right answer he won't give you full credit. If your explanation on a problem isn't what he wants either he won't give credit. very specific. isn't clear during his lectures and he makes it hard to meet w. Makes you feel stupid when asking questions
Doctor Lake truly cares about students doing well. With that being said, if you don't show up/show him effort, you aren't going to do well. He says that attendance is not mandatory but you will not get points for certain things if you don't show unless medically excused. EXTREMELY helpful during office hours. Utilize this man, he is knowledgeable.
I would not recommend taking Dr Lake. He is extremely inconsistent with his grading. Also when asking him for help he wont help you or re-explain the subject he will just keep asking you the same question. He is not helpful at all and will not help you learn. He insists you already know the answer.
I didn't understand a single thing in this class, he is way to smart to be a professor and working with freshman students. He doesn't like when you ask too many questions in class. I was too scared to confront his office hours, I did once and he spoke to me for one minute and sent me on my way - very unsatisfied.
second day of class and he made me walk across campus to buy a lab manual we weren't told about
He won't answer a single question you ask and says "you should know this" but the lab doesn't correspond with my lecture at all. He will not answer your emails and you have to turn the lab in before the class is over- even if everyone is still standing there clueless and not done. makes you feel stupid, highly advise looking for another prof
You feel like you understand the material during class until you go to do the homework when most of it was never discussed. the class is very time consuming. he's not great at written communication and will comment on your misunderstanding of it to other students. He seems promising in the beginning but I was only stressed in this class.
While he want you to succeed, he is a poor teacher and doesnt explain lecture material well. Complained the entire semester about masks and once told our class he didnt believe climate change is man made. Did not enjoy this class at all but at least I made friends through suffering
Highly recommend going to his hours in the beginning of the semester for help. He does insult you and make you feel so defeated in all topics. He's smart but has no clue how to present that knowledge. Mistakes frequently on slides, which makes the material confusing. Do the homework book problems. He's a decent person. Not consistent with grading.
He is very bad at explain topics through lectures I had to learn the course on my own.
Getting an A in this class was one of the most rewarding moments of my life. Is he tough? Yes. However, if you work like hell, show him effort (show up, go to hours etc.), and don't take everything so personally, you'll be fine. Had him for Fall 2021 and hope I have him again. Very likeable and relatable guy as well (if you're not sensitive).
Dr. Lakes class is very difficult. He is not the best at presenting material but is willing to help his students out. He is a very nice guy and is actually so funny but his class is not. It is very time consuming and frustrating. To pass his exams, make sure you do the HW problems and review the in class and HW worksheets.
Dr. Lake does want students to do well in his class, but he moves so fast during lectures and is very rude when you go to his office hours. He gives 3 big tests. The first two were not too bad if you study but the final was difficult and covered a lot of material. I would stay away from him as much as possible and I heard he is even worse for lab.
First college class I've ever failed. He teaches one way of doing a problem in class, then you get homework and test questions that are completely different, requiring different methods that he didn't cover. I spent hours studying for each exam, and I never got anything better than a C. Unless you're a natural chemistry expert, avoid him.
Dr. Lake is a very tough professor. You either like him or you don't. If you are willing to work your bum off..(going to his office hours) you will receive the grade you want. With this being said you should not slack and do HW! Receiving an A in this class was insanely rewarding. He is not the best prof but he is a genuine man and wants the best.
Overall, he simply is a chemist and not a teacher. If you dont know how to do something, he will tell you just to figure it out. If you are coming into his class for the first time, go to his office hours. It helps, but not too much. It is to mainly get on his good side because his grading is extremely inconsistent.
Professor Lake is decent person in lecture, but kind of iffy in lab. He will somewhat point you in the right direction, but don't expect him to give you the answer directly. He can come across as mean, but I don't think he genuinely means it. Go to his office hours if you need help with something. He is more helpful there than in lab or lecture.
Despite Dr. Lake being a tough grader I found that I retained so much information from the class. You have to put the work in to get the grade you want. Do the homework it helps a lot with the exams. He truly does want the best for his students and if you show up and put the effort in and STUDY, you will do just fine.
Professor Lake is a decent person in lecture and lab. Although he is willing to help, he won't just give you the answer directly so be prepared to apply your knowledge. Despite being difficult sometimes, I learned a lot from his class. He really cares about his students, even if he does not act like it. Getting an A was so rewarding in his class.
His class is graded on a curve. Lab will boost your grade. His exams are difficult, so do ALL the homework problems. They are word for word on his exams. You won't understand a thing in lecture, so be ready to teach yourself. He talks very fast and likes to talk about random things. He is very passionate about Chem, but it was a rough.
He said if we were ever confused or didn't understand something, just ask. Okay, sure, he even advised me not to get a tutor. So, I asked him a simple question during a lab. He straight up told me I knew how to do it, I reassured him that I didn't, and he told me to figure it out for myself. Thanks, you're a really good educator and person /s.
He was genuinely the worst professor that I have ever had. If you don't want to be kicked while you're down, DO NOT take a class with him especially if you haven't taken chemistry. Has made numerous inappropriate comments throughout lecture and lab. Very disrespectful and should no longer be a teacher. Retire please!
Feedback is given 1-2 weeks post-submission. Grades are never accessible electronically. He refuses to answer questions and assigns an EXCESSIVE amount of work. The lecture does not cover the material needed to complete labs. Half the class dropped, I stuck it out, and it's clearly because of Dr. Lake. Avoid at all costs!
He is a difficult professor at times, but as you get to know his style of teaching and grading the class becomes easier. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! The tests given were fair.
only prof to teach chem112, which is insane. very demanding and cold, will not be remorseful whatsoever to personal problems. expects students to immediately understand very hard material and goes through that material way too quickly. the type to refuse handing out a stapler if you forgot. GET A DIFFERENT PROF IF YOU CAN.
He is genuinely the worst professor I have ever had. He flies through material and excepts you to fully understand it right away. Half the time I don't finish writing the notes down for slides before he goes to the next one. His homework is so hard and it hardly aligns with lectures. He's smart but so bad at teaching. Avoid him if you can.
He doesn't say what will be on quizzes, so you have to guess and pray that you're studying the right material for them. Same goes for exams. During lecture, I have to focus more on making sure I write all notes down before he switches slides than pay attention to what he says. I end up having to teach myself regardless. I wouldn't recommend.
First class I have ever had an F for in my life. I literally had to withdrawal otherwise it would've ended up plummeting my GPA. I'm retaking the class with a different prof. If you can avoid Lake, do so at all costs. Be prepared to teach yourself, if you can, as his lectures and notes are awful. Genuinely have never struggled so much in a class.
Dr. Lake is extremely knowledgeable about chemistry, he is a good person who genuinely wants you to do well in his class. That being said, his classes are difficult and graded pretty much exclusively on exams (550 points/ 900 are exam) Taking notes is very difficult due to speed, and 100% guaranteed you'll be teaching it all to yourself later.
Professor Lake's class is no easy feat, but if you put in the work, the payoff can be rewarding. While lectures move quickly, using unstuck AI alongside the textbook can really help cement the concepts. Exams are tough, so doing all the practice problems is a must.
I cannot believe this man has positive ratings. He's rude during office hours, he doesn't give enough time to write all notes, he doesn't teach well, I could go on but I don't have the space to write it. His class was the first class I have failed in my entire life. I had to drop before it plummeted my GPA. Save yourself and avoid him if you can.
He was condescending and unhelpful. Going to his office hours helps but is demoralizing. If you ask him questions, he will not answer them. He will check your work for you but be unclear with what is incorrect. Don't take his lab specifically because he is very picky with lab reports, and it will take up all your time. His lecture is fine but fast.
If you do not have to take this professor DONT!!! Our lecture is 3 weeks behind our lab and he does not even care. He is a horrible teacher and I have learned close to nothing. He has shown to not be understanding, caring, or responsible throughout this semester. I truly cannot not recommend more.
His tests are super hard, if you can take any other professor then do it. If you can't, be prepared to spend a lot of time on studying. He posts the slideshows, but they don't have any of the definitions/information on it as he displays it during lecture and you need to type. Told us we're gonna end someone's life if we became a doctor.
dr. lake's lab was very hard. he picks your lab partner for you every week from flashcards. it would take me around five hours to do lab reports with help and i would still get c's on them. you cant read his handwriting either. i disliked him at the beginning of the year but ended up making him a campus celebrity to make his class more tolerable.
Had him for lecture. His class is almost entirely reliant on 3 exams. His grading is very subjective, especially when you have to write definitions. Be prepared to study every single day because he does not teach a thing. Very rude & inconsiderate. The beginning is not bad but it gets so much harder, especially when he is behind. First C in my life
He's good at lecturing, and it's easy to follow if you're attentive in class and do the homework (and go to S.I.). However, I don't recommend him for lab as he doesn't grade, avoids questions, and leaves students to almost figure things out alone. He's available in his office but can be hard to find during his office hours.
He committed involuntary manslaughter against multiple students in the classroom. If you want your morality to be spared don't take CHEM111 unless you have an abusing kink.
One of the worst teachers at Iup. Dude always had sweat stains and was a weirdo. If you don't like using excel spreadsheets don't take his class
I need not say more purely because I respect him as a scientist despite not agreeing on his teaching methods.
Textbook work isn't required but VERY helpful. Isnt too hard if you've taken chem before but def harder for those who haven't. Fast during lecture but taking pics of slides or asking him to go back is easy. He really isn't that bad and he's sweet if you actually show you're trying. Do the extra credit. Exams are open ended + lots of partial credit
I've had him for 2 semesters now. He is not the nicest. Both semesters we haven't had near as many points as the syllabus states either. Class is almost entirely graded by 3 long, tedious exams. 1/3 of each exam is comprised of homework problems, so do them! There is a youtube page dedicated to solving all of them called "The Glaser Tutor Company"
I would NEVER take Dr. Lake's lab again! He's dismissive, rude, egotistical, and gives little explanation, even when the lab covers material not yet taught. He once told me I was stupid and implied the same to others. Asking questions gets you ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE! If you enjoy feeling stupid then this is the class for you. Avoid his class!
Could barely stand to teach, has to grade stuff with a magnifying glass and misgrades exams and quizzes multiple times. His labs are even worse, throwing you to the pits and not helping whatsoever, will say "you know how to do it" even if you don't, and won't help. SO much filler in lectures, doesnt even help with the material that's on exams
