Try to avoid him at all costs. Not helpful at all with papers that are 60% of your grade. Puts you to sleep, no real reason to go to class since there are no tests.
DO NOT take any of his classes, this man is probably the most arrogant person in the UW-L faculty, and I have even heard other staff members say so. And, almost the whole grade comes from writing papers, which he grades very difficultly.

This professor is ridiculously hard. Of course, if you don't care about your GPA and just don't want to have to go to class, go ahead and take him because it is not necessary to go to class ever since he doesn't teach you anything.

Oh my god, the worst class EVER. The class is boring, the professor is arrogant and unapproachable, and you have to write papers on religion, which suck because it is really hard to do well on them.
Ok, so everyone thought Prof. Lee was hard, but I didn't think so. His class can be frequently boring, and he can be tough if you suck at writing. I did perfectly fine on all of his papers, however, and I didn't think that he graded too harshly.
Avoid at all costs is KEY!! Please do not get stuck in this boring, hard class.. He grades you on essays alone and grades them not what they are about, but how well they are written- pretty much like an english teacher. Please take my word!!
If you can't and don't like to write papers than i don't reccomend this techer. He grades soley on three papers and he grades hard and plus the class is super boring! Never take this class it has lowered my GPA a lot! I wish i knew!
Terrible, boring, thinks he's great. If you love Wisconsin History, you are boring and need a hobby. Don't ever take him!! I'd rather have an STD than to sit in the same classroom he is instructing in.
Um, don't even bother with. Rude, thinks he is a God, and never answers a single question. Requires poor texts for his courses. Pathetic!!
Wow, this was the worst class ever. I was able to skip a lot though since what he lectured about had nothing to do with the papers. He brushes his hand through his hair way too much. I'd hurt myself just to get out of sitting through his class.

Terrible class! One of the worst I've ever had. When asked to clarify paper assignments he simply says do what the paper asks..ok? He doesnt' state clearly what he's asking for. He talks the whole hour non-stop and says uh a lot...very distracting

HORRIBLE! Who hired this guy? He is SO boring and teaches you stuff that is irrelivant. analyzing ancient readings that other history classes dont do and you dont learn what you should be.gave me an A/B when i had mostly As and had no reason for it.

He stutters and his voice is soo boring. His papers are extremely difficult as he does not seem to realize he is teaching a 101 course. And, if you take his class, hope none of your family members die as he will not let you make up points missed for it.

This guy is the worst professor ever! No matter how good ur papers are that u write...C! U could spend hours and hours revising ur paper and get it back and see that u get a C...the papers were stupid since u never knew what he was looking for.
Terrible teacher. not only is he the most boring professor i have ever had, he is mean, too. when i asked why i got an "f" on my paper, he just said it was just bad... when i asked him to explain, he wouldn't. he needs to get fired for sure.
This guy sucks, do not take him no matter what, he is so boring and very unclear with his assignments. Very tough grader and will put you to sleep. Once again do not take him for any reason

Class is brutal, a complete nightmare. CL Smooth is a self-absorbed jerk. He has unclear expectations and grades conistently hard. I'd rather stick my face in a wood chipper than take another class with him.
He is a horrible teacher and gives out grades that dont exist. There is no cd grade.

brutal class, tests you on what HE believes you should write about. Plus he's boring, and thinks he's sexy. but basically, tests you on his own opinion, teaches like a graduate history major class!

I haven't even had this teacher, but let me assure you, he is legendary, let me say that again, HE IS LEGENDARY! Go to his class with at least a low grade horse tranquilizer to knock yourself out before lecture begins. :)

What you've heard is true. Do not take him. there are no tests, but the 2 papers you write must be near perfect if you want anything besides a C. I used to think I could write well until I took him. class doesn't relate to papers, so you don't have to go.
I got an automatic fail on a paper worth half my grade because of a citing error (which was an opinionated error that was wrong because he "preferred" a different way). This guy is BAD!!!
I WILL PAY YOU NOT TO TAKE HIM. Everyday you leave his class you will feel like jumping out a window. He doesn't realize he is teaching a GENERAL EDUCATION course and that not everyone in the world is a history major, let alone cares about history.

I'm a history major, yet I can't seem to pull off better than a C or D on anything in this class. Nit-picky, inconsistant grader. Have learned nothing. Prone to being late for office hours. I'm convinced his hair is hiding the devil horns.
He grades so unreasonably! I KNOW that I'm good at writing papers, and this man (who I firmly believe is satan) gave me D's on both papers. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Make sure you get a good night sleep before taking this class, if you don't you WILL fall asleep.

Yes, you MUST be prepared to write VERY well for him. I got a C on my second paper. However, I got an A on my first, so it /is/ possible! Ugh, give the guy some respect; he's the one dealing with 50+ stupid freshmen who don't want to be in class in the first place.
Very smart guy, tough though! If you work hard and do your readings, you will do fine in the class. If you are not willing to work hard for your grade, this is not the professor for you.
The man can't talk, is so boring you would rather kill yourself then listen to him, and is the hardest grader i have ever had, and it a 100 level course. Translation DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
I took this guy my first semester in 1999, aka a long time ago, but he made a big impression in a bad way. The papers were hard, the class was extremely boring, and as for Dr. Lee himself - he is very intelligent, but the most **** professor I have met on campus. Not a nice man!
It's true, satan lives. The man is egotistical, boring, unclear, unhelpful, ****, and as far as I'm concerned an unknowledgeable inbred hick who has a love for the crutch word UM. 150 times in 5 min, at least he kept me awake long enough to count.
Professor Lee is the worst teacher I have ever meet, he never tells you what he wants, he won't help you if you ask for help, his test are graded as if you are a history major and english major, I have never had a more boring, rude, jerk for a professor ever, He also says um about a hundred times
Hard grader, class can be a little mind-numbing, but I think he is a nice guy underneath...i think.
Unlike most people who have posted, I liked Dr. Lee. At times lectures were boring, but overall they weren't too bad. He didn't have tests, which was nice, but the papers were challenging. If you are a decent writer, who can analyze things well, you'll do fine in this class. His classed helped me gain significantly better analytical skills.
Well Prof. Lee is an alright guy, but his class is tough, he challenges you to analyze, analyze and analyze documents from the past, for me it was difficult, and I am a good writer, I have never gotten anything but A's on papers until this class, wow, well good luck with this guy, Best part- No tests, thats it though, otherwise a 2-3 pg. essay/week
Overall, he is a tough grader with a lot of exppectations for a gen ed class. If you ask for help he is willing to sit down and help, but he has really boring lectures. I have never heard anyone use the word "um" so many times.
I'm not sure how American History could be any more boring. I'm a US history buff and a History minor. I'm a graduating senior and have never had a class that I loathed more. Completly unispiring professor with zero teaching ability. Knowledge is there, but that doesn't make him a good teacher. Do NOT take his class unless you have to!
You will not learn anything from this professor, he only teaches how not to use the word "um" and will um give um um um you um every um example um um ah um of um how um um not to use it um....yup, annoying. Good luck if you are stuck with him
He is the worst teacher in the um um um um the um world. He is um um um very boring and um um um a very tough grader. um um um if you don't like the word um um um "um" then dont take this class cause youll hear it um um a lot.

The only way to describe this professor and his class is that I want to shoot myself in the face every day. He is unfeeling, cruel and high on his own power. Feel like talking to someone about it? To bad. He's the department chair. His grading makes no sense, what works on one paper does not on another. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
UM, UM, UM...not much else except to take notes on UM's. I once counted 64 um's in one class period! It was an amazing feat...not much else to say about this class. Avoid him and take La Coss.
If you can't handle Lee you either (1) can't think/write at a college level, or (2) don't care (looking to coast). Yes, he can be a bit pompous, but please excuse him for not being a perfect angel. You don't have to be the man's friend. If you want an A and are willing to work (and are intelligent enough to get into UW-L), you can get it.
This man is awful. He is incredibly unclear, and yet refuses to assist with clarity. He is a complete jerk who told me, upon asking for help on a paper that If i didn't understand the assignment, I should re-think being a college student. He is vague, pompous, and a miserable person. His lectures are irrelevant to history. HE IS AWFUL!!!!!!

1. After every breath he takes, he feels the need to say uhhh or um. 2. Beware of his improper usage of the word "paragraph." By paragraph he means a whole paper, as I learned the hard way when I turned in an assignment consisting of several sentences. If I had known how bad this class would be I would never have taken it!

This guy ummmm was the worst teacher ummm that I uhhhh ever had. This is what he sounds like when he talks. Everyother word is umm or uhh. I hated going to class, but it was mandatory, because there were "pop" writing assignments on the reading from last class. I fell asleep during his boring-ass lectures. Kill yourself if you are taking him.
Extremely vague on directions for papers and a very very hard grader. not an easy class. he's not helpful at all. wouldnt recommend him at all.
I've taken him for a few classes, he does expect a lot, but if you don't mess around or procrastinate and pay attention you'll do fine. However,if you're not a history person or looking for an easy A I wouln't recommend him.
If he could have said ummm a few more times I may have shot myself. He is kind of intimidating. He grades really hard, has pop in class writing assignments, and doesn't explain ANYTHING! The kid that sat next to me fell asleep everyday. If skipping class was possible without failing I never would have gone.
This was a hard class, there is no denying that, but this was all due to my lack of English skills. He is a good speaker and is very knowledgeable. If you want to learn about history and enjoy a challenge, especially if you are planning on majoring in history or English, take this class.

i hate history. he made things fairly interesting and i felt like he held me accountable for paying attention because he made eye contact. He wasn't very helpful to begin with, but then i sucked it up and went in a asked him for help. he did help a lot.
Wisconsin History was pretty cool with Lee. He really knows his stuff. I didn't really like how the class was structured but it wasn't too bad. The first few weeks were awkward because he does make direct eye contact, but you get used to it. My historical writing greatly improved through this course. He is pretty boring sometimes, but overall ok.
He is very unclear with what he wants, says umm 200 times in one lecture, takes up way to much time with empty words, and doesn't make anything interesting. If you like boring classes and writing papers that have unclear directions.. take him.
As said before very unclear on what he wants on papers. I love history (it's my major) but Lee's lectures were pretty boring. In addition he requires a LOT of long, tedious and boring readings. I received a good grade but had to work very hard (lots of papers) Avoid if you can.
Good eye contact with Chuck, I had him last semester *take cst 110 first it will make the papers so much easier* he expects alot, he got upset last semester because majority didnt complete a reading. he cancled class and walked out he punished us by in class writing for like 3 weeks every class! in calss assignments are graded with a +or-.

Gives out paper expectations and then expects you to go extremely above and beyond that while correcting your grammar not bc it is wrong but bc this is how he would write it.If you can weed through all of his umms you come to the understanding he presents of do as I say not as i do. Was my adviser. I asked for an Inc b/c I had a concussion, had 1 year to complete. Told me before time was up I got an F. Gave him papers anyway, told him my daughter had died 5 mos ago. He asked why I didn't I tell him--My answer: I didn't think it would matter to you. Nuff said. Ended up with C grade.

Professor Lee is one of the better professors I have had. He really knows what he is talking about and if you pay attention you will learn quite a bit.Does make you write a lot and expects it to be at a high level but it is college so it's to be expected. Helpful if you seek him out.Work hard and Lee will give grade you deserve.
Horrible professor. If you don't think and interpret things exactly the way he gives you a C or worse. No exams, just 2 map quizzes, weekly in class writings and papers. He lectures in class, but the papers arent on lecture so there isnt much point in going to class.
A LOT OF PAPERS! He will give a low grade on a paper if it is not phrased the way he would say it. I love American history and he somehow managed to make it really boring. Try to avoid.
Lee was by far the best prof I had at UW-L. As a history major he was very helpful, and challenges you to think and analyze history. I learned a great deal from him in my 4 years at UW-L and recommend taking him to any History major. If you are not a History major just plow through the class and move on.
chuck lee, really knows his stuff, one time, majority didnt do one of the readings he yelled at the class and dismissed the entire class.(for our punishment we had to do a paragraph on each entry for weeks) he gives credit when you bust your butt. he really cultivated understanding history, the final essay was tough.

I thought he was a great teacher. There is a lot of reading (daily), but you can easily get away with not reading all of it. The class is sort of dull, but he is a really nice teacher and if you ask him questions and seem interesd in the material, he will like you and make the effort to converse with you and know your name.
Not a good prof. Only second week and I have not learned anything. Too hard to understand. I suggest not taking him.
He is a good teacher. He helps you through the 2 semester papers and if you try, you will do well. You must go to class on fridays due to the 'friday writings' but you can get off not going to class on Mondays and Wednesdays and come to class without reading the material. He's a nice guy, and he knows his history. Boring, but it could be worse.
This guy's a absolutely horrible professor. Grades absolutely rediculous. Worst professor I've ever taken.
Advice for any of Lee's classes: establish a one-on-one relationship with him (i.e. take advantage of office hours, and ask questions after class)and you will learn to appreciate Dr. Lee's personality, wide breadth of knowledge, and interest in fostering the abilities of the interested student. He is also very helpful as regards internships, etc.
Dr. Lee is very knowledgeable with his subject material. HIS 101 is an introductory level world history class, and he does a good job teaching it. His grading method is unique; he doesn't take attendance but make sure you go to class or you'll miss crucial in-class writings. While his lectures aren't particularly interesting, he's happy to help you
The dude knows his stuff. You only have to come to class on fridays. You dont have to do the daily readings and if your not sleeping he won't dislike you. No exams, just two short papers and a couple easy map quizzes.
This Professor is absolutely terrible. Very inconsisiderate and rude. Lectures are boring and he grades very hard for a 100 level class. Made me hate the subject of history. Try to avoid taking him.
I love history but this teacher made me hate it. He was rude, condensing, and really just came across as an academic elitist. He took my favorite class from high school and ruined it (WI History). I learned nothing and got nick-picked on my grade. Seriously, do yourself a favor and avoid--he is an awful professor who will ruin your love for history
Was shocked to see all the bad blah blah about Dr. Charles here. Hes friggin awesome! Good feedback on papers, I didnt learn so much from anyone else here. DOES NOT GRADE INFLATE so you know you eanred it.
