Dr. Madden is a very nice guy. He has no real control over the questions on the tests and quizzes, but he does let you know one class period beforehand of what is suppose to be "pop quizzes" by the department. Overall the experience with him was pretty good for an intro level Biol. class. Take him if you can.
Very, very nice person. Sarcastically funny. Teaches through slides. Tests are hard, but then again, it's Microbio... 4 tests, one gets dropped. Mandatory, comprehensive final.
Dr. Madden is a great professor. He explains things using many life experiences, which are helpful understanding class materials. He also teaches a micro lab. I really enjoyed both of his lecture and the lab. Take him and you will be going to fall in love with microorganisms.
The class is very hard, but he is excellent. He will not screw you over in any way, is a fair grader, and all he asks is that you do what is required of yourself.
He teaches off the slides that you buy for the class. He even emailed it for the students that did not buy it. Great teacher. Knows his material. Try hard and get a good grade. Dont try and youll fail. He helps out a lot if you ask. Funny guy also
I hate biology, but I actually enjoyed his class. If you go, you'll get an A, but he does send out slides via email if you can teach yourself. He's really funny so class really isn't bad. There's 3 quizzes and 3 exams )he drops the lowest grade of each), then an EASY final if you study past exams
Awesome professor, really friendly and approachable in office hours. Tests are hard, but the class was still a good experience
Guys he is boring, and sometimes very mean. tests are hard but not impossible. you really dont need to go to the class , so dont waist your time ,stay home and study the power points. not a big curve maybe just 2-3 points and thats all.
Dr. Madden is a very funny guy and keeps the class interesting. He is not that rigid about giving back credits for missed questions on the exams, if you show reasonable proof. Take him if you can.
Although he'd rather be doing research, you can tell this prof is very passionate about his profession. Very genial & tells stories to liven up lecture. Always has a smile on his face. Tests weren't easy, but weren't hard either. Curves a few points to keep average around a 76. Definitely take this prof!
Madden is an extremely chill professor. Everything is explained clearly and he will work with you on anything you need. Def recommended!!!!
Dr. Madden is a great professor. He knows his stuff and expects you to know them too. Exams are not usually based on what you read off the slides but rather your understanding of the topic (critical thinking). Study hard and you will do well. I also had him for lab; Highly Recommended!!!!
boring.... very hard..... stay away or u will fail!
Going to Dr. Madden's class was easy because he was very passionate about what he was teaching and he made the lectures interesting by either talking about his experiences or using humor. Try to go to class every day-he e-mails slides but they're not enough-you'll need the info in his lectures. He's a funny guy, take the class.
Had him for both lab and lecture. Really good guy, will keep you awake with his humor and stories. He is very passionate about his subject as you'll find out through lecture. Slides aren't enough to study for exams, make sure you take notes from the text.
Great professor and lab instructor :D
He is a great professor, very passionate about what he teaches. He definitely knows his stuff and wants you to know it too. His lecture is great, keeps you awake and he likes to use humor. The exams are mainly from the lecture slides but you need the book to go in detail about the things he talks about. Take his class if you can.
He is very enthusiastic and loves to spice up his ppts. for entertainment. He's very helpful and grades fairly. His test's are easy if you pay attention, which is really not hard to do in his class.
He is by far one of the best professors! I took micro for the first time with polyes and failed...but with Madden I got an A. He really knows how to teach and makes a dry subject interesting! highly recommended professor!!!
Awesome professor! Interesting class! His tests are not hard if you pay attention and study. He is pretty straight forward with the test questions. Dont just study his slides though. Some of his test questions come from the book and not the slide so make sure to read that. But if you study both the book and slides, you should be fine.
Madden is a great professor! He keeps class interesting, cracks jokes (which are funny) and explains things very well! I highly reccommend him, but like all other upper level Bio courses, you DO have to study and work hard. He's sort of awkward to talk to in person haha. But I DEFINETELY reccomend him! :)
Awesome and funny professor! Tells stories and jokes during class. His tests are difficult if you don't study but he gives a curve so that the class average stays around 75%. He gave us an 8 point curve for one of the tests. You have to study the book too, not just the slides because some questions come from the book only.
Great prof, tells great stories related to bio. I love attending his classes.
Dr. Madden is a very good professor. He is extremely cool (in a calm way) and is willing to help (but he doesn't show it). You must read the book AND slides together to do well (B and above) on his exams. His exams can be tricky and aren't always straight forward but he does curve. iClicker quizzes are optional only to your benefit. Recommended!
His exams are hard and tricky. His notes are not enough to study. Must be nice but we are just concerned about the hardness/easiness. His niceness isnt going to help our grades.
He may be good at teaching micro but when it came to genetics!! OH its a whole different story!! YOu cannot even keep ur eyes open in class as he just reads off the slides! And dont have the depth of knowledge on genetics as required. However he gives the HARDEST exams just to fell so great about himself! Take the other prof teaching..avoid him!!!
I am so interested in Microbiology because of him. He teaches the course in a way that is interesting and is hilarious at the same time. His tests are not that easy but he may curve them. If you read the chapters and understand the powerpoint slides, you should be fine. I would recommend him, plus he is very mesmeric.
hes a nice guy but his exams r HARD! he curves sometimes to keep up the class average. His power point slides are uselss because he twists around the questions so you gota read the book but u need to have enough time to read the book. good luck
One of the best BIO profs @ GMU. He knows his subject matter very well. He is funny & tries to keep the class interesting. Slides r enough 2 study from. New @ teaching Genetics but then grades the exams easily too. I had him for Micro (BIOL 305) as well. He is an expert in Micro and loves teaching it! I got A's in both courses. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
He was a great professor. I came into the class thinking that I would hate micro but ended up wanting to concentrate in it. His exams are pretty tough, and you need to memorize EVERYTHING from the notes, but this class is totally worth it. I would take the class again. Easy on the eyes.
Dr. Madden is an amazing teacher, very helpful and easy to understand. You have to work very hard to get an A, and book use is mandatory to fully understand the subject and do well on the exams. He is very passionate about the topic which you can tell from the lectures. I highly recommend him, but you have to be willing to put the work in.
Dr. Madden is extremely fair. Microbiology is a hard class, but his system is made to give everyone a fair chance. All exam averages are curved to 75% and i-Clicker Quizzes can only help you. Be ready to study hard, but you won't find a better one than Dr. Madden.
Dr. Madden is probably the best professor in the biology dept. He uploads the ppt slides on blackboard so attendance isn't mandatory, but there are iClicker quizzes given in class that can help your grade. He is also funny in a sarcastic way so class can be enjoyable. I highly recommend taking his class.
Please take him if you are ever planning on taking Cell Biology or Microbiology HE IS THE BEST BIO teacher at Mason and coming from a junior mathematics major, he is one of the best teachers I have ever had.
If you're looking for an interesting class with a teacher willing to help you, THIS IS THE TEACHER and class you're looking for.As with any other class u have to study to get a good grade, but having a good teacher always make it all easier. No joke, ask him anything any time and he will find time for you. Plus he is good looking (think Dennis Quaid)
Excellent teacher who curves! Tests are not easy and it seems like you are rushing through, but are otherwise not impossible. Study the material at least 2 to 3 days in advance of the test as there are a lot of topics covered. Overall very approachable, helpful, and tall
Madden is so hot i'd give him two hot peppers if i could!........but don't get fooled by his looks, his class is tough. You have to read/study the book, then read his powerpoint slides, then use the book's website to practice some more. You'll end up learning a lot. Very interesting class.
Excellent professor! Attendance isn't mandatory but class is blast so I don't know why anyone would skip. Very energetic and passionate about the material. I have ADHD and he kept my focus the whole semester. As for difficulty, just read the book. Its a fairly easy class. He even curves! Pass PChem and then tell me this is hard. Take Dr. Madden!
Madden is a funny teacher, you don't have to go to class but it definitely helps with the iclicker quizzes and exam material. He looks a lot like Jim from The Office (tall and cute!). I suggest reading the book and going over the powerpoint slides thoroughly.
You DO NOT need to study the textbook. Go to class and listen to his explanation of the slides. This class is very straight forward if you just memorize the power points. He's a funny guy and makes the class very enjoyable.
you learn alot from his class, his exams are not straight forward he asks some tricky questions to throw you off hot intentionally but he does want ot make his exam a bit difcult, the exam is harder than the sample exam so don't assume its easy when you study, and you really have to get the concepts so i recomend gng to class, exam are all multple
Madden's keeps the lectures interesting and has a good sense of humor. Go to class, because he gives i-Clicker "pop" quizzes (usually hints ahead of time). Read the text and take the practice online tests. He gets some of his test Q's from them. Tests are very tricky, so you need to know the material WELL! Definitely NOT an easy A, but he does cu
He pretty much knows EVERYTHING about what he teaches. Has a great sense of humor; and lets you know when the topic is going to be boring. However.. the exams are VERY tricky! He says that you are only responsible for whats on the powerpoints, but that doesn't mean to NOT read the textbook. READ THE TEXTBOOK!!
His sense of humor is the best. I wish all my teachers where like him. There is nothing special about the way he teaches, but the way he brings it across is awesome. Your grade is determined by the amount of effort you put into his class. If you are a freshman I wouldn't recommend taking this class because it will tank your GPA unless youve taken A
Madden is a good teacher, but if you don't know the material, there's no way to understand what he's saying. study, know your stuff really well and be prepared for difficult exams.
I hate this class. I did not learn anything and I've gone to every class lecture. I read the textbook and his powerpoint notes and still failed his tests. Terrible class. Not recommended.
HARD CLASS. He makes hard tests and you really have to know the stuff in order to pass his exams. The book does not help that much, all the questions come from his ppt, but you have to know the concepts. If you know biology then take his class otherwise not recommended.
He's an amazing professor and hilarious. If you have a choice take him for Microbiology, both Intro, and Microbial Phys
He is a pretty good teacher. He tries to make the class interesting and throws in a couple of jokes every lecture. The I-Clicker quizzes (extra credit) help out for the final grade(he tells you beforehand when they are). He is very good with questions. If you want to ask him, don't feel shy, go ahead and ask. He'll make sure you get a good answer.
He's a pretty good prof. Tells stories and cracks jokes. HOWEVER, the subject of the matter is NO walk in the park! With that being said FRESHMAN BEWARE. Im a sophmore now and I don't think I would have been able to do it. Read the book and pay attention in class.
Dr. Madden is great! He has a dry, sarcastic type of humor that's hilarious! Took microbio over the summer, and while not the easiest class, he made the subject material interesting. Oh and it helps that he's so cute to look at too! LOL. Just go to class and study and you can get that A.
Someone tell me why this professor is so attractive. Also, he REALLY knows his stuff and has a great sense of humor, so lectures are fun, but you must attend them. TESTS ARE VERY DIFFICULT. Comprehensive material will really put you to work. Beware.
Amazing teacher, knows what he is talking about and admits when he doesn't. If you go to lecture there is little need to study, and he seems to love questions. Not for freshmen, but very funny and very dry. His tests are evil, as his lectures seem easy...worth it for the entertainment alone. Juniors and above OK.
the one thing i disliked the most were his exams. they go in the format of a.) b.) c.) a and b.) or all the above answers for all his test. i felt like i was taking SAT exams every exam. lectures are okay. his jokes weren't really funny. at the end of this class, you will be a germaphobic person.
An amazing professor and class. Madden knows the material through and through and gives multiple examples about each subject. The tests are challenging, but not impossible. Be sure to study his highlighted notes, as they often show up on tests. I took his class as a freshman, studied hard, and was able to earn an A, so it's not impossible.
Microbio isn't easy, especially for non Bio majors, but it's not impossible with Madden. He's very knowledgable about the subject and knows how to teach. Exams are kinda hard, but if you go to class and study his notes, you'd do fine. He has this dry sense of humor, and very sarcastic that makes the boring lectures fun. Highly recommended.
Very clear on what he's going to put on tests, great sense of humor to keep the class attentive, and always willing to answer questions. A pretty nice guy in general as well. Recommended!
One of the best professor I have ever had as a student at George Mason. He is very clear and knowledgeable in his subject.
Dr. Madden is a great professor. He explains the material clearly and is always available if you need help. His tests are simple and relatively easy if you pay attention in class AND read the textbook. There are 4 tests, a final, and several extra credit quizzes. I highly recommend taking BIOL 213 with Dr. Madden. He is a great guy!
He is a great guy with a sense of humor BUT THE CLASS IS VERY HARD! If you study forever you will pass but a C is a good grade in that class...
good teacher. hard class. need to know details for test. iclockers quizzes make attendance mandatory. good teacher however. knows his stuff.
Amazing professor...very understanding, fair, nice to talk to, really knows his stuff...and really good looking, i must say!
Great professor! He explains things thoroughly, follows the book, and the practice exams are identical to the real exam. Definitely should have some Biology background like AP from high school or a lower level. I took Bio AP and Anat & Phys but if I hadn't I'd say this class does move at a fast pace so don't fall behind..there is a lot of material.
Definitely knows what he's talking about. Attend his class, read the power points and read the book if needed
Dr. Madden is a fantastic professor! Contrary to what most reviews say, his exams are really not that difficult. If you pay attention in class and read the textbook, you will get a B for sure. All it requires is a little effort. Don't expect to breeze through it by skipping class and not reading the book. Put in a little effort, you'll learn a LOT!
Madden is a great teacher! I am a Freshman and have taken both Cell and Micro with him. He is very informative and knows his information. His tests are difficult and you do have to pay attention and read the book, but they are not impossible. He does curve the tests sometimes and posts practice tests which are helpful. Overall he is a great teacher
Excellent Professor!! He is very helpful, and his lectures are great!! He always makes funny jokes, that just keep you interested!! His exams can be difficult, but just study, study!! He also gives clicker quizzes to boost grade!! :)
He is such a great lecturer. He explains things better and more efficiently than the book could ever hope to in future editions. His tests are basically reworded versions of his practice tests. People say they fall in love with him, but as long as his looks don't distract a student, his class should be an easy A.
Easy class. Know the slides inside and out. TAKE THE PRACTICE TESTS! For each question, think about the other possible questions with other terms.
Had Dr. Madden for 2 classes. He is an amazing professor! Extremely clear on topics, keeps our interest with relevant examples and images, and clarifies any questions we may have. Tests are based off of the practice exams, so study those, come to class, take notes, and you should be fine. He was really funny, too!
Dr. Madden is a super nice professor but his tests are EXTREMELY HARD. He puts a lot of trick questions. Definitely study really hard for his class...you're gonna need it.
I had him for both Microbio and Cell bio (BIOL 213). He is freaking amazing! Just take him guys. Be aware, his exams are pretty hard, but if you read his lecture notes and read the textbook then you are golden. I had an A in both courses so it's very doable!
His exams are HARD. He will tell you himself up front. He is very engaging and thoroughly explains all topics. Provides study guides for exams. He has a dry sense of humor, but interjects it well into the material. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Tests are extremely hard and you must study A LOT. I would pick a different professor.
Super tough exams, drops the lowest, great professor though makes lectures interesting, just a lot of content and have to study a ton
Straight forward class. Didnt buy the book, simply attended class and memorized his slides. He has interesting stories for everything. Loved it!
Best professor I ever had
He is A good professor. Very funny. But beware that his exams are difficult. He really wants to test that the students know the concepts. Tests based off slides.
He is such a great lecturer - very clear, thorough, and engaging. Micro isn't an easy class, but he made it very enjoyable. His tests really aren't that bad if you just go to class and study the slides. He's a nice and funny guy too. Definitely recommend!
You don't need to attend class except for days when there is an i-clicker quiz. Those will help boost your grade. The exams are not difficult if you pair reading with the practice tests. The exams ARE essentially just altered versions of those. Just remain cognizant of HOW he could change the questions to reflect different answers.
I LOVE him! His lectures are always interesting and he is always making the class laugh. Tests are very very hard. Need to know everything backwards and forwards. Study all the power points and his practice exams, which are versions of the actual exam.
Awesome professor, but extremely hard. You have to know the material from every direction of the P.Ps and the book. His exams prepares you for MCAT, but ruins your GPA. I would not recommend him at all
He is the best, And that is all I have to say! I highly recommend him!!!
Fantastic Professor! The lectures were dry but he always made the class laugh every class. He posted helpful study guides and had a tutor for the class to help. The exams are difficult. Read the book and study the old exams he gives. He uses old exam Q's by asking it different ways. Iclickers/optional hmw helped my grade a lot. Defin. Recommend!!
If you want to learn you need to take Dr. Madden's class. I found his test to be easy. On the first day he says his exams are Incredibly hard, but he says that to get rid of the weakest students. In reality, he is incredibly fair and easy! To do well you must read the text, slides, and record the lectures! Great luck!!!!!!
Best professor I had during undergrad.
Best professor I have had here at GMU. His expectations are clear and realistic. He says his test are difficult but they are commensurate with the class level. Take any class with him and you will both learn and enjoy the class. Never thought I would say cell bio was my favorite class taken, but it was
I loved this class! Dr. Madden makes microbiology really interesting and has an entertaining style of teaching. This class is not an easy A, so if you're not interested in studying his slides, reading the textbook, and attending class, you probably won't do well. Great sense of humor, stories, and very nice looking guy. I would take him again.
I had 213 with Dr. Madden as well. I would take pretty much anything he taught. He is one of the very best professors I have ever had. His expectations are clear, his tests are fair, and his lectures are entertaining. He is easily accessible via email and during office hours.
I took 213 with Dr. Madden as well. I would take pretty much anything he taught. He is one of the very best professors I have ever had. His expectations are clear, his tests are fair, and his lectures are entertaining. He is easily accessible via email and during office hours.
He is the best: funny, exciting, interesting, and an all around great guy.
A very quirky guy that makes a lecture about biology engaging enough for a person not to fall asleep. Very clear with his expectations and an overall cool guy. Lecture class with no additional hw. The class itself was a bit difficult (due to the test which are very specific) but with hard work to understand the material, it's manageable.
Best professor I've had during my 4 years here. Took the class with him back in 2011 and loved every minute of it. He is the professor who inspired me to become a biology major. His exams aren't overly difficult and he is a great guy overall. Taking Bio 305 with him this semester as an elective. Can't wait.
Madden is the most perfect Biology professor at Mason. He's adorable, humorous, intelligent, and professional. His tests can be a little difficult if you're not attending class regularly and staying on top of your work. His lectures are clear, read the book for extra help.
Dr. Madden is great. He teaches with a sense of humor and has some topical anecdotes. It is helpful to take his BIOL 301 Infectious Diseases course since some material overlaps with Micro.
he is very clear and funny. he makes jokes about bio terms to make it stick in our minds. he curves too. highly recommend. I honestly studied during exams only and got an A. study textbook ALONG with powerpoints. he gives extra credit quizes
He's a good lecturer, funny, entertaining, with interesting stories to tell. There's not better choice for a BIO professor at Mason. But tests are very specific and can be hard, expect to do very heavy studying to get an A. Although he didn't curve for our class, so that made it harder. Apparently he curves sometimes. Overall very good.
Madden is the best professor I've taken at Mason. He is nice, funny, and relaxed. His lectures are interesting and he knows his stuff. 4 tests, lowest score dropped. He gives optional quizzes that can replace a test score to help your grade. Gives accurate study guides and practice tests. Recommend 100%.
Absolutely wonderful professor, great class to take. He always keeps the students engaged, and it isn't boring.
HW and quizzes that help your grade, drops lowest exam, multiple choice. It is possible to do very well in this course, you just gotta put in the time. The worst part is his questions get tricky: "which statements are true? I, II, III, I & II, all three?" or switching around a single word. He curves a little. But he is kind and has an open office.
I am personally not a fan of biology, so this class was rough for me. Dr. Madden is a great professor- he knows his stuff, and is willing to help if needed. If you go to class, take notes on what he says, and read the book you should be golden! He gives practice tests and study guides that are also helpful. And take the optional quizzes; THEY HELP!
Madden is one of the best human beings, let alone professor, I've come across at my time at Mason. I took BIOL213 with him and am taking Microbio with him now because he suits my learning style so much. He's hilarious, cute if you like the older kinda dorky type, and he really, REALLY knows his subject. Tests can be hard, so practice a lot!
Dr Madden is very helpful and intelligent. btw, I think he is hot too :)
Charles Madden is great. I personally think his exams are easy, and just require the time and effort to succeed. He drops an exam and adds up all the extra credit to an exam only if it helps you. Also gives out study guides. Yet another phenomenal teacher in GMU's biology department, I would take him again if I could.
Madden is those teachers who will make you actually learn the material. His class is basically memorization, but I would not recommend just memorizing facts and forgetting everything after the exam. Actually learn the material and how things work because you might need it for future classes. He is really nice and drops an exam in case you mess up.
Dr. Madden is a really good professor and explains things very well. His lectures are also very engaging and actually help you in understanding the material. His exams are not easy but they aren't that hard either just look over the power point notes and the practice exam he gives out and you will be fine. I recommend taking him
Lectures are easy to follow, but not mandatory. You can learn what you need to from the book. He really knows his stuff and knows how to answer any question you throw at him. His practice exams are very helpful for the actual exams. He gives optional quizzes that can really help your grade if you need the extra points.
He's so funny and adorable for a biology professor. You won't need textbook. I studied from the slides, and the TEST BANK for the same textbook (Get this from google or a classmate). Exams can be confusing, but the test bank REALLY HELPS! Would recommend going to the TA review sessions.
Dr. Madden is BY FAR the easiest Bio professor you will take at Mason. 4 tests + cumulative final but lowest test grade gets dropped so final isn't mandatory. I-clicker quiz every wednesday (for a MWF class) and is a free 100 points (the reason I got an A instead of a B) TAKE HIS CLASS FOR AN EASY(ish) A!!!!!!!
Honestly, Dr. Madden is a really amazing professor. His bio213 is extremely hard and challenging at first, but if you go to class and pay attention, you will be just fine. Trust me, take his class. It is well worth your while. He is a very intelligent and educated man, but he still manages to make his class entertaining and captivating.
HOW TO GET AN A: Great professor. Record and listen to his lectures. STUDY!!!! Take the quizzes. He's so interesting and funny to listen to. The one thing that tripped me up was that his final does not use old questions so you actually do have to relearn old material. But he is an amazing professor. take him for all bio classes if possible.
Dr Madden recorded his lectures and posted them up to blackboard which was extremely helpful when studying for exams. He gives you the option of taking the iclicker quizzes and homework. Very chill guy! Highly recommend him.
Love love love his lecture. I can listen to him over & over even though bio wasn't my favorite till this class. So lucky to be able to be in his class.
He is the best BIOLOGY professor at mason, hands down. He is so kind and always is working to help his students understand the material. He is fun and always makes the class interesting. He also is sensible. If he knows you work hard and are in class most of the time, he usually gives you the grade you deserve. TAKE HIM!!
Professor Madden is just great! He's super smart and very dorky, but that's what makes his lectures enjoyable. His tests are not the easiest things in the world, but as long as you do the practice test, read the textbook, go over the powerpoints, come to class, and take the iClicker quizzes, you're golden. Would most definitely take him again!
Professor Madden makes some of the worst jokes ever, however, he also gets a laugh because he's trying to make this class interesting (MWF 9:30 am) so he gets a bonus points in my book. He makes sure that people understand what he's talking about and encourages questions. He gives practice tests that are pretty close to the real thing.
His exams are tricky, usually avg. grade on each exam is a 75 max. We are given practice exams but he changes about every question making it confusing. He is interesting in class but it's not an easy course. Everyone complains about test difficulty. All the comments below seem super sugar coated. Other professor's exams are not as difficult
Madden is a great lecturer BUT his exams are hell. The class average would always be in the C range. It's really hard to get an A+ in his exams - no matter how hard you study,
He's friendly, engaging, thoughtful, and invested. He genuinely wants you to learn, and will facilitate that with posting audio lectures online (great for studying), very good powerpoints, memory tips, providing context, etc. Available by email or office hours, he genuinely cares. Fair grading system. Made the material and his lectures enjoyable!
Dr. Madden is a very engaging teacher. He posts his lectures online after class is held, one if you miss, two if you need to review. I always learned more when I attended so I recommend going. He also gives optional quizzes which can improve your grade a lot, so its better to go to class. Tests are tough, but so is the material, very in depth.
I loved this class. Go to lectures and at least skim the readings if you want an A. He records his lectures and posts them on blackboard so don't worry if you have to take a sick day, but he gives iClicker quizzes which don't hurt if you don't go but they can help your grade a lot at the end of the semester. Funny guy. Enjoyable class. Must study.
He is the best. You have to study to get the grade you want. his exams are not easy at all but his lecture is very clear. he is always available if you need him to explain stuff. about grading he does curve but sill 2 points won't do much. Study hard for this class.
He's definitely my favorite teacher this semester! He's very approachable and will explain things to you. He tells goofy jokes during lecture to break up the monotony. He does expect you to learn the material but give you a practice test that lets you know exactly what you need to focus on. You can get an A if you just put in some work.
Madden is the best! He sets you up to do well, if you don't it's your own fault. He's interesting, funny and helpful. Do yourself a favor and take him for cell and micro, he's the best!
He is a good professor! Take this class with him! Textbook is not required, his powerpoints are good enough to study from , but reading the textbook doesn't hurt. Also, he gives optional iclicler quizzes in class, that help your grade in the end. Tests are a bit tricky, but they are doable if you study! So you gotta study!!! Go to review sessions.
Madden gave out easy exams, but expect to do some reading. Textbooks and his slides were most helpful, but he tends to ramble in lecture.
He is one of the few who really cares about his students. He has a great skill in giving lecture and related to stories dealing with microbiology, I really enjoy his class to max . He makes you not to miss any of his funny jokes and stories . I will highly recommend him for microbiology classes A+ for Dr. Madden
He provides his students with everything. Everything you need to know for the exam is in his pp and he also has video recordings AND practice exams. He's honestly a godsend because he makes it so that you can pass. His exams are very straightforward so if you study ahead of time, you'll get an A. His personality and humor are great too! Take him!
LOVE Dr. Madden. You will not regret taking any of his classes. He is fantastic. His tests come from his power points and he always clarifies if you don't understand. Also he tells great jokes.
He's great! Take him!!!
Easily one of the best professors you'll have at Mason. He provides you with everything you need from to clear & concise ppts, video lectures, and MC practice exams w answer keys (which are a godsend, so take advantage of them). To study, I would go through the practice exams and annotate all the choices for each of the questions. Passed w an A.
Favorite Prof. ever! Dr. Madden keeps it fun, you can tell he's really passionate about biology. I found his side stories very helpful because a lot of the names of microorganisms can mix up easily, he made all the bacteria a lot more personable and easier to remember. He's easy to talk to and really makes you feel like you can come to him
One of the best professors that I have ever had. His lectures are engaging, and he is very approachable. He is very funny, which helps keep your attention. The best way to study for the class is to keep going over the powerpoints. He says if it's not on the slides, it not on the test. Tip: Don't heavily rely on practice exams to study.
Professor Madden is a great professor and an easy A. Show up for class and write down notes he writes on whiteboard. Showing up is not mandatory as he posts his lecture recordings online but it is very helpful. There are only 3 exams including the final. Very easy and open book. There is also a presentation on a disease but also super easy.
He's a great professor although his exams can get confusing. Its all multiple choice and very similar to study guides he gives you but many of the answers confuse you so know functions and what they do by heart. Does grade on curve. 12 pop quizzes done on iclicker but those are pretty straightforward. Pretty easy class if you put in the work.
He is a good professor who teaches well, but his exams are extremely tricky!! His answer choices confuse you up!!!!
Good professor, tricky exams. Provides old exams, but don't rely on them too much. A lot of memorization. iClickers every Wednesday. Curves overall grades at the end. Can drop one exam from the 5. Interesting class and posted audio of the lectures so you can catch up if you fall behind. Overall recommend but you have to work for the A.
HE'S GREAT! I LOVE HIM AND HE ROUNDS GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL DR MADDEN! YOU GOTTA WORK FOR YOUR GRADE THOUGH BUT ITS DOABLE.
Charles "Mad Dog" Madden was a very fun professor to have, and also provides very informative lectures both in terms of course material and career advice.
Amazing professor, made me love microbiology so much. Its a 300 level class so its kind of difficult as expected. Take him!
Awesome lectures, funny stories, genuinely nice guy who will help you if you ask. If you know the correct answers for the practice tests AND the reasons the wrong answers are wrong, you're golden for the real exams. Yes, it's a lot of info to memorize, but that's how generally classes work, no? Know 90% of the material, and you'll get an A.
His tests are challenging. You have to basically memorize his powerpoint slides. Gives practice exams and the test questions are similar, but confusing and can have a totally different meaning. There are 4 exams and a final. iClickers help, but don't rely too much on them. Promises a big curve, but his curve is not that big.
I'm a non-traditional student and when I started this semester I literally hadn't taken a biology class since the 1990s - I felt so far behind in the beginning! I averaged of about 5 hrs/week studying and aced every test. The lab and optional in-class quizzes are easy and will boost your grade if you need it. If I can get an A you can too!
I truly enjoy taking his class. I'm terrible at any subject that deals with science, but I was still able to pass this class. Also, you don't really need to the textbook to pass the class. The exam questions are based off his PowerPoints. Also, he has practice tests that really helps me with the actual exam. Take his class, you won't regret it.
Volume of material to learn for a 5 week summer course was pretty rough. Tests are challenging and account for almost all of your grade - you can drop 1 exam score, but make sure you do well on Exams 1-3, because Exam 4 is the hardest. Lectures available online so you don't have to come to class (but you'll want to because Dr. Madden is awesome!)
i took this as a 5 week summer course of course expected it to be very hard but not MCAT level hard! he is great teacher how ever he has extremely hard tests MCAT level he knows it and prepares you for it. i hope i'll pass.
Took this course in the summer, highly recommend DrMadden. Not only is he hilarious but also he prepares students very well for the MCAT. For the exams if you study the power points & do the practice exams then you'll be guaranteed an A (textbook is optional- attend lecture instead). Also you get to drop 1 exam.
Definitely recommend this prof. Coming to class is optional since he posts lecture videos online, total of 5 exams(4 lecture + 1 final) in which you get to drop your lowest. The quizzes are optional but if you do them then your grade will increase by a letter. Prepares you for the MCAT very well, also study the powerpoints instead of the textbook .
Dr. Madden is awesome! Lectures are so interesting and he explains complex biological processes and concepts in a clear and concise way. He's got a great sense of humor and really knows so much about biology. 4 exams, provides study guides, attendance not taken, in-class iClicker quizzes for extra credit! Put forth the effort and you'll do great!
Easy A!
It is a 400 level course so it requires a good amount of effort & studying. His exams varied from extremely easy to extremely difficult questions & consist of multiple choice questions and about 5 short answers. His lectures are extremely informative. He really prepares you for the exam & he also conducts review sessions. HIGHLY recommend, take him
I have never rated any prof here at GMU but I'm doing this for Dr. Madden. He is the best!! His bad ratings r from the lazy students I guess. Listen to me! Go to class if u can or watch the videos posted, go for review too cuz it helps and understand the powerpoints. Don't just memorize it cuz he can trick you with just a little thing. I LOVE HIM!!
This professor is way overrated. He is good and everything when lecturing, but not that great to be honest
The biotechnology lab (BIOL 486) with Dr. Madden is awesome- I can't recommend it enough! There isn't a lab manual, he writes the procedures on the board, provides a brief overview, and then turns you loose to complete it. No helicoptering, very laid back lab course. Madden himself is hilarious and just awesome to talk to about lab and other things
Skipped most classes towards the end and still did fine because I watched video lectures he posted online. His lectures are actually entertaining to watch because he tells stories and cracks jokes related to the topic- which in itself is pretty cool. 100% take him!
Took this prof for both 213 + 305, very good at lecturing. Exams are difficult but if you show up to class/listen to his video lectures & study the powerpoints you should do fine. No book req.,attendance not mandatory however there are optional iclicker quizzes in class which can make a difference in your grade by one letter. Drops lowest exam.
Professor Madden is the best biology professor Ive had in my whole college career. He did a 20% curve towards the end of the semester(I originally had a C, but ended up with an A-). There are iclicker quizzes every other class which can raise your grade by a letter if you do them all. The tests derive from the practice exams. Take him!!
did better just skipping class and studying the study guides on my own. just look over slides (posts them) and know why each answer is wrong and right and define all of the options and you're golden. Would not recommend him, awful lecturer, rude, iclckers are not worth it (bad lectures poor iclickers scores) study on your own all test multi choice
Madden is a solid choice for this bio class. Cell structure and function (Bio 213) is a pre req. for med school so the course is hard but if you cant pass the class, what is your chance of doing well in Med school? Madden respects his students and questions that they have. Just keep the questions on topic...
RUDE, awful choice, I got the grade but I did it on my own his lectures are pointless. study the material on your own, he rambles in lecture and skips over numerous slides, not even worth going just google it instead. drops lowest test score, the curve is only a 2-3 question curve. If ur cool with studying on your own then sure take him, if not LLL
I really like that tests arent the only things that are put towards your grade, theres online homework that helps with your grade which i really like. He's a nice professor, study guides are similar to tests but tests are still tricky so still study a lot. ask any questions, he will definitely answer without attitude.
I love Dr. Madden! I thought his lectures were interesting, well-organized, and helped me understand so I could succeed. His PowerPoints are thorough and covered all material on the tests. Don't bother buying the book, I didn't open it once the entire semester and I wasted my money.
Had him before for 213 &305, really nice and good at explaining material. only 3 exams no projects, the final is the third exam its not cumulative. textbook is optional, listen to audio recordings more helpful
I found this class pretty difficult because I didn't take AP Bio in high school or Biol 103 at GMU. Dr. Madden makes the class extremely interesting, and make sure you study a little bit every day because the powerpoints are packed with information you may or may not have heard of. Lecture/textbook not mandatory. Recommend him to pre-med students.
Unless you're passionate about Biology, do not take him. The way he explains things is so hard to understand. He barely addresses the stuff on the slides and instead talks about random stuff that's way more complicated. He takes 5 minutes to answer one question because he starts talking about unrelated stuff. Had to teach myself the whole class.
Hands down the best professor you could ask for. Posts all of his lectures just incase you need to review, drops the lowest exam (including the cumulative final), he is so articulate and is so knowledgeable. The only thing is some exam questions are tricky, but an A is very attainable if you just study the powerpoints posted. SO GREAT. TAKE HIM!
Take him. He's the best.
Dr Madden is awesome, hes a very nice person and will do his best to have his students end up with a good grade. His exams are tough but he usually gave a curve and drops one exam grade. I didnt come to class much and ended up with a good grade. Love this guy
He makes the material harder than it has to be. He does great curves. It's the only way to pass his class tbh. The hardest exam is the second so get ready to fail that one. The final is cumulative but its not hard. It is just general questions from the previous tests. He tries to make the class and he is really funny. Has random puns here and there
Madden is a great professor, he is very funny, his class is based off four exams and eye clicker quizzes which take the place of your lowest exam grade.
Professor Madden kept class interesting by showing a lot of pictures along with the lecture slides so that we could understand what was being taught. He tells a lot of dad jokes which is pretty funny sometimes. Class is relatively easy as long as you pay attention or watch the lectures later at home.
He does everything he can to help u succeed. He posts practice tests, audio recordings of lectures, detailed study guides, does weekly quizzes & makes hw optional so that it can only help your grade. His tests are VERY tough but there is a curve. Reading the book isn't needed but it helps! Seize every opportunity he gives & and you'll do fine :)
Give yourself a week to study for his exams. Felt like he made the material more complicated than it needed to be but his curves are amazing. Got a C on the first exam and his curve got me a 90. Opt for the sapling homework rather than the iclicker quizzes if you don't want to do both. He's definitely knowledgeable but wasn't a fan of his teaching.
It's possible to get an A in this class but you will have to work for it but Madden provides slides and practice exams that make it possible but you will still need to put in a lot of work, but again its doable. Listening to his lectures and adding on to the slides he gives is most helpful. He is very nice and his lectures are not boring.
I actually enjoyed taking Professor Madden. He does slideshows which makes it easier to follow along and he records his lectures as well in case you have to miss class. He posts study guides and practice exams which I strongly encourage that you do them, some questions appear on the exam. The exams are sort of tough, but it's not impossible to pass
He's really relaxed and funny. Pay attention to the lectures because they really help you out on exams. I got the textbook, but never opened it once. I just studied the slides very heavily and got very high test scores. The practice exams are almost identical to the real exams. His curves are also very high.
Madden also taught BIO213 my freshman year, and it was a wake up call for me. I took this class over the Summer (A) semester. It was fast pace, but he adjusted the material to fit the time frame we had. Extra Credit I-clickers. He likes to crack jokes and the fact that he laughs too, makes it funny. I'd say this is a solid choice for a professor.
Professor Madden is a really nice Professor, but he talks way too fast through his lectures. There's no reason to show up for lecture except the quizzes, I found it easier to just deep dive study his practice tests. If you rework his practice test questions so that any of the multiple choice answers could be correct then you will ace every test.
Attendance is not required but Dr Madden makes his lectures fun. He has a great voice and is funny. He is always willing to help if you see him at his office hours. He gives study guides & practice exams, make sure you know everything involving because its not the same question. Great professor.
Prof. Madden's lectures were not particularly interesting; they were actually pretty boring. But what helped the best was studying his practice exams for the real thing. He only tweaks the practice exams a little and rewords them, and the final is very broad. The iClickers counted for an exam grade, and those were very easy. Take him for the exams.
Dr. Madden is an engaging lecturer you will remember the material he covers in class because of this. He is straight forward and gives you all the tools to succeed in class.
He posts his lectures and the recording online. Attendance is optional. The tests are 50 questions in the testing center. He is a funny professor as well. Study well and you will pass.
Attendance is "required" because if you want an A for your project that you do. You need to listen to other people's projects in class. Respectfully so. Closed book tests, but the "essay" portion is made by the students during class. The multiple choice is based off student's presentation + people he presents. He cares! and that's what counts. :)
Best teacher ive ever encountered. Easy to understand, lots of ways to boost your grade, no pop quizzes. Super flexible with schedules or extensions!!!
He is a witty professor who makes lecture as fun as a bio class can be. This is deninatly a tough class, yet he is a very fair grader. He gives 5 tests total, and automatically drops the lowest one. He also gives optional quizzes each week that he will average and count as an extra test grade (only if it helps your grade). With effort, he is great!
Iclickers in class (usually Weds) for extra credit to help your grade. He records lectures and posts them on BB so attendance isn't mandatory. Try to find people who took his class before, he doesn't change his exams all that much so u can use their exams to study. He's a caring and great proff, will take him for micro as well. Exams were mc.
I loved Madden as a Bio teacher, this was the first Bio class in my life that I ever understood and got an A in. It was a tough bio subject to teach and learn, but he made everything make sense. He's a really great teacher, very simple, and super kind, I wish he'd teach every class I had at GMU. More teachers should be like him.
He is very great at explaining the lectures however, the exams are very difficult.
Professor Madden is hands down my favorite professor I have ever had. I'm still taking the class. I am apart of the COVID-19 online semester for his course. He is much more lenient than my other professors! Made things more easier during this terrible time. It's an easy A if you put the work into it! Exam questions are tricky so just study well
I am apart of the COVID semester and I think people who are criticizing him for the circumstance is not fair. He honestly is very fair with due dates, tries to give quiz questions that match the exam and offers past exams for the prep of the exam. He does an excellent job at a difficult topic. This semester was not ideal for anyone. but he does wel
He is a good lecturer, but his online quizzes are very ambiguous. So, for this reason I am saying the way he has handled COVID semester is not so good. He is very knowledgeable but this class just because very stressful after the online transition.
Madden is an amazing professor. He is clear and concise in his syllabus and in class(online now but before the pandemic). I am not a good test taker however, his class has inspired me to earn my grades in every single class I take(even chemistry)! He was most prepared for this pandemic considering all the lectures are online for us to review!
I have been recommending this class to my friends, and honestly think Dr. Madden is one of the smartest professors I've had at Mason. The class is 4 exams (one dropped), cumulative final, and clicker/online quizzes. The questions for quizzes and tests are tricky, so you actually have to know the material. He will curve the test median up to a 75.
solid, solid choice for BIOL213. Very clear grading criteria and very forgiving grading policy. The class isn't really hard to get a B+ in but you will definitely put in some work for an A. I would take him again in a heartbeat if he taught more upper levels. His lectures are also recorded and he's pretty lax about bumping up grades.
The other descriptions are pretty good. This is the best teacher I've taken so far. He clearly knows his stuff and keeps the lectures interesting and fun. His tests are not that hard and he curves if the average is low. It's an easy class and you can learn a lot if you put a bit of effort into it. If you can, take him.
Dr. Madden is the best micro professor to take! He was so helpful even after the transition to online. The study guides help so much for the exams. He also records his lectures, in case you miss them. Honestly, if you just study his lectures and do the study guide, you can receive an A. The lowest exam score is also dropped. TAKE HIM!
Class is purely exam based, but he drops your lowest exam score. Optional iClicker quizzes that add up to 100 points as well. Really enjoyed his lectures, and sense of humor. By far one of your best options for a biology class if you have a choice. Also, he provides practice exams, and rewrites them for the actual exam. Super helpful!
He was a great professor and is notes and practice exams really helped make sure you couldn't fail any exams. He really changed my view in biology.
prof madden has been one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are entertaining and he actually cares about his students. Take him!!! The was the first biology class I have ever ENJOYED!!
Dr. Madden is great. Drops lowest exam score & iclickers are optional- boost your grade. Lectures are interesting & he's helpful outside of class too. Attendance not mandatory- he posts lecture videos online. Study the POWERPOINTS (if you take notes on them, which you SHOULD- IT HELPS!!!) & PRACTICE EXAMS to do well on exams. He's also hilarious!
Professor Madden is one of the best Professors at Mason, his lectures are everywhere, he records his voice for those who miss his class. Hard exams but if you pay attention to his slides and videos, you will be ready for his exams. He always curves his exam, there are 5 exam and the lowest one is dropped. The quizess and HW are optional but helpful
Professor Madden is hands down one of the most knowledgeable Biology Professors at Mason. He knows his material very well and has his own teaching style. His lectures are great and efficient. He drops the lowest the exam score but his exams are modified version of the study guide so you have to actually study and know the material well.
Easy and Hard ;)
I took Madden during the COVID-19 semester. Madden made the transition EXTREMELY easy for his students! Although his exams are challenging, but he tried making the transition as best as he can. He gives great lectures, offers quizzes to then be added up as an exam, drops your lowest exam, and is hilarious! If you have chance to take him, do it!
Dr. Madden is an amazing professor! He explains things very clearly and I loved attending his lectures! Be prepared to memorize his powerpoint slides, because all the test questions come directly from the slides and practice exams (the lowest exam score is dropped & there are curves for most exams). I would love to take another one of his courses!
One of the best bio profs you'll have in undergrad! Super understanding and really cares about his students success. Put in the effort and you will see the results.
I took Professor Madden my freshmen year and his class was one of the easiest I've ever taken at Mason. He's very passionate about biology, so if you are not a science major it would be pretty hard to stay focus in his class. Attendance is not mandatory and he posts all of his lectures online. Exams were very similar to reviews given out in class.
Amazing professor and even before going online, he has videos up from previous year to watch. also records all lectures in case you miss class. practice exams are similar to actual exam, but make sure to carefully read the actual as he will make a small change from the work "and" to "or" etc.
Dr. Madden is a mega lottery for the mason biology department. Very helpful, understanding and respected professor.
Dr. Madden is a very nice and knowledgeable professor. The only issue is his Teaching Assistant is not great at what she does. She is not helpful, she refused to record review session even though a lot of us requested. She does not know the material and she fears to be hold accountable for saying I don't know. Please choose a TA who i more helpful
Dr. Madden is an AMAZING professor. I hope in the future I can take one of the other classes that he teaches. Very fair grades in this class. Your grade is basically a reflection of how much effort you chose to put it. This class is worthwhile and even through the pandemic he was very accommodating. If you have the choice, 100% chose him.
Platonic ideal of a professor. His lectures are super engaging, and his workload is the perfect balance of not too heavy but not too light. The exams are not easy but not very hard and he curves if needed. Dispenses tons of free wisdom for students seeking careers in science and is always accessible. I wish he could teach all my classes.
This guy's the goat. I've never talked to him but his class is great. The exams were based off of the HW questions and the practice exams. Only difficult test was Exam #2 - besides that it's a relatively easy class. If I ever have a chance to take another class with him I will!!!
Absolutely amazing professor. His prerecorded lectures are legitimately interesting, and he seems like such a great guy. I wish every class was like Dr. Madden's, I loved taking his course, even though it was online.
I have so much respect for Dr. Madden, he is very knowledgeable, nice and caring. You don't see a lot of professors with these qualities much these days. Thank you Dr. Madden for all your hard work to make the class interesting for all us. I wish I could take all of my classes with him
Great curves, good pacing of material, realistic exams, and engaging lectures. One of the only professors that provides a GPA booster while actually making you leave the class feeling like you learned something. Structures his class to ensure student success by giving multiple attempt quizzes and drops lowest exam score. He makes learning enjoyable
Prof Madden is probably one of the most knowledgeable professors I've had, he knows so much and attempts to teach students in a way that they'll understand easily. Since it was online all lectures were from a while ago, there were 4 exams and a final (lowest dropped, could even be the final) and homework counted as an exam (free 100 essentially).
AMAZING! He knows his lecture and what he is teaching about. One of the most genuine and caring professors I've come across. His tests are easy once you understand the material. Would take him again if given the opportunity!
Dr. Madden is amazing as always! Best teacher at GMU, and most student friendly as well!
He is the best biol prof I ever had! His lectures can be interesting. He gives out open note quizzes to help your grade, which are optional but is very helpful if you do them bc exams can have some of those. He provides practice exams too! Also, lets you drop lowest quiz grade and exam grade. I would definitely take him again if I get the chance.
i loved this class. to be fair i love biology but professor madden's lectures were amazing. It was online so it may have been different but he was very attentive and responded to emails very quick. You don't need a book and mostly anything can be found on the lectures or on HW and past exams. The exams are relatively easy but you have to study.
Dr. Madden is one of the best professors I've ever had. He knows what he's talking about and his lectures aren't boring to listen to at all. His exams are based off of the notes and are open-note, but they are timed so you won't have any time to look at the notes (study!!). He's very laid back and none of his classes have mandatory attendance.
Really fun class. He records all his lectures and posts all slides so you don't have to come, but you should. He knows a lot. He makes the exams off of the student presentations of diseases made while the class is ongoing. They are all multiple choice and not that hard. Pretty easy class to get a high grade in and have fun while doing it!
Biotech is a very laid back class. He talks the entire time about interesting things and we take some notes! He records his lectures, which are super helpful. His exam are open book open note, but the exam are a little difficult, but manageable, as he gives a curve. He gives you three tries for online quizzes, which are also open note.
Honestly I dont like the way the professor designed this course. Exams are held at the testing center when they could be easily done online. Super inconvenient, and while we do get to choose a date to take it, prof already starts the next chapter. And then Im behind. Class shouldve been online and there should be only one day to take test.
He goes incredibly too fast on lectures I wish he slows down. It’s so easy to fall behind in this course.
Giving him a 1/5 rating because he assigned us an exam right after spring break.
I mean he's an ok prof. His exams are definitely tough. First midterm average score was very low lol
Great professor. Lectures are a bit fast-paced, and they can contain information that is not relevant to the course. Definitely won't go wrong by taking him. Drops the lowest exam grade. Homework is not mandatory. Publishes all lectures online.
Wow, I have never been in a class where I couldn't improve regardless of my effort. This is coming from a straight A student. Exams are literally nothing like the notes, practice exams or even quizzes. Only like 5% of practice problems show up on test. Questions made so confusing I feel like I am not being effectively tested on the actual material.
I took Dr. Madden because his ratings were very good, but I realized they were mostly from the courses he taught online. His in-person class is EXTREMELY fast-paced and his tests are confusing. He does curve a significant amount though.
He's a nice guy but his tests are extremely difficult, and I felt that the study material given didn't accurately reflect the actual tests I was given which was very frustrating. I also strongly dislike having to take tests at a testing center instead of online or in person as it was very disruptive to my already busy schedule.
Test material is very heavy. I know cell bio students get a massive curve, but for micro --don't expect a large curve. I did bad on the second midterm, and he only curved 2 points. DO NOT be deceived by the positive reviews: they are from students who had him online & had open-note exam. He changed the course and does not do open notes anymore.
Literally very few people show up to his class nowadays because he goes extremely fast, and I cannot catch up. His jokes are not even funny, so it's not necessary to fake laugh every five seconds. Ridiculous how I am currently preparing for a FIVE chapter midterm.
I am absolutely devastated with this class. I have spent so much time studying & reviewing for these midterms and I am not improving. My grade for each midterm is gradually getting lower. This never happened to me before. His exams are hard, study guide didn't helped, goes through rather a faster pace, and I'm tired of going to the testing center.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR MICRO!!! His exam questions are so confusing and purposely made difficult. Take Froelich instead since the exams are somewhat better from what I have heard.
This class is very memorization heavy! His exams are straight from the lectures, so you basically have to memorize everything and understand how they connect. Practice exams are helpful! Four exams and homework-lowest exam is dropped! Lectures are fast and mainly need to self-learn.
He's a really warm and positive guy, fun to be around. The class is kind of difficult and the test questions can be confusing but just make sure you do the practice tests and you'll be ok
Honestly don't understand why the recent ratings are negative. I think the exams are fair -most of them are on the practice exams! I'm also glad he gives us 3 days to take an exam whenever we can. His lectures are also not fast paced at all, he spends a lot of time talking through one slide which I don't mind.
I love microbiology but taking it with this professor was not an enjoyable experience. His exam questions are not straightforward and it is overall hard.
Dr. Madden is an amazing teacher; he communicates clearly with his students, offers in-person & online lectures, is easy to reach outside of class, and is really funny! There is a lot of information to learn, but he provides a lot of resources (LAs, study guides, office hours) to help out. He even allows for questions during lectures which I love!
His lectures are VERY basic, his tests are overly complexed based on what he teaches. Class is only graded on exams and quizzes we take. Exams are "curved" but not much. Most the class fails. If you want to pass his class, get ready to teach yourself. Worst professor I have had by far.
I underestimated how hard this class was. Like it's no joke, you have to study everything. Every single detail or else you will fail (not exaggerating). You will think he will ask these certain basic questions, but you really have to dig deeper into the content and engage with it.
The class is very difficult, the professor is very nice but just the way he teaches is mainly off the slides and when we have tests he gives us a practice exam but sometimes the practice exam doesnt relate to the actual exam we take. I would avoid this class and try to take a different science class if you are just looking to fulfill a Mason core
Absolutely, unnecessarily, and undoubtedly a difficult class. I wish he didn't made the exams so difficult but it's purposely hard to weed out the Pre-meds. I am going to retake this class but bruh he's the only one teaching over the summer too tf. -_-
the tests are heavy and tough, to much details
He's nice and funny but not a good professor. When he teaches, he constantly goes off tangents and then I get confused what he's talking about. Like just talk about the slides. I don't care that you saw a mountain goat during your vacation. And the tests yes, it is heavy, so just rely on yourself and study. Do not rely on prof. I use the textbook.
When I tell you this class is a clownery, believe me. I thought I was the only one struggling in his class until I looked at each of the midterm class average on Blackboard. Usually people got ~65-72% on Exams 1-3, but Exam 4 was ~33%. Final was very detailed and had ~65% average. Do not take him. Ignore the recent positive reviews; they're fake.
A fast paced class and he thinks it is reasonable to give us a short amount of time to prep for exams. Micro has lot of details but it is not the main problem. The main problem are the tests and how they are worded. PURPOSELY tries to confuse you and you would second guess all the time. I regret taking him. Makes me wanna drop out of college
The professor himself is super friendly. However, his class is one of the most difficult science courses I have taken at Mason, even harder than orgo in my opinion. His exams are worded in a format meant to confuse you and if you don't study every single detail in his PPTs then be ready to fail. He drops the lowest exam.
He's good but sometimes he thinks that you already know the material.
This class was the worst class i have ever taken. i do not like giving bad reviews, but his exams were horrible. they did not come from his powerpoints. their is no extra credits. I would take someone else.
I don't know why people say micro was hard with Dr. Madden. Attendance isn't mandatory, he has all his lectures recorded, accessible for office hours, and lets you boost your grade with easy homework assignments. Does this class require a good amount of studying? For sure. But he is really understanding and the class isn't bad if you put the effort
Finally completed this course and wow....reading the reviews below, makes me feel a bit better that I am not the only one who thinks this course was very challenging. He really likes throwing lots of difficult questions on the exam that are unclear. The test felt like I was taking an SAT with countless "All of the above" and "A and B are correct"
you're going to have to rely on yourself to study his exams are super detailed and nothing like the study material he gives us. Maybe 5% of practice exam questions show up on the actual exam. He goes off track during lecture a lot and I'm almost certain he plans his jokes ahead of time which makes things worse. LA's were not helpful either.
Guess I will not graduate summa cum laude lol.
Exams are so tough & very detailed so u need to study or remember every slide to score well. Plz, study for ur first few tests as they will only get harder later on. A lot of exam questions come from quizzes & practice exams. 3 days to take each exam. He also curves every exam (only by a few points) so don't worry.
The same people who say Dr. Madden is hard are the same people who procrastinated and didn't show up to class. He is more than fair, allows you to drop any test (including the final), and the homework is optional and only helps your grade. He is a great choice for microbiology
Genuine professor. Clearly passionate about biology. For 213 he'll make sure to relate content back to pre-med track, so he's a great option there. Tests weren't easy but manageable. Definitely take time to study.
He is a good professor. He gives practice tests which are very similar to the actual exam. There are extra credit quizzes which are also helpful in preparing for the exams. The lectures are very interesting. Make sure you study well for the exams.
Dr. Madden is the best educator. Does not deserve any rating lower than a 4 because honestly his exams are hard, but attending class, reviewing recorded lectures (all are recorded), and taking plenty of notes will help you prepare for them. Drops lowest exam grade, and has extra credit quizzes which don't hurt your final grade. Amazing professor.
Very good prof he knows a lot about the subject and enjoys teaching it. As long as you do the homework and the readings you will do well. Make sure to use the LAs as they are very helpful and were able to help deepen my understanding. The practice exams were super helpful.
Dr. Madden's lectures are great and he is always eager to answer questions. Your grade is based on homework, 4 exams (lowest one dropped and he always curves the grade to 75), and iclicker quizzes. Study the slides and go to review sessions before the exam. Do the practice exams because he rewrites the questions for the actual exam.
Tests are too hard but he is nice though since he drops one of the lowest scores and you can take the quizzes in class or do the homework also as a test grade, very nice of him but those tests :/
Dr. Madden is a solid choice if you have to take BIO 213. He curves the exams that we take which is extremely generous. The exams are very hard so it is nice to have extra points to boost your grade. The content is hard to digest so be prepared to teach yourself outside of class. Get ready to study for hours but take Madden he is very caring.
Dr. Madden is one of the best professors to have, especially when you're first starting out as a freshman planning to go to med school! Although the tests are very tricky, it's a preparation for you! He does curve a lot of exams afterward. There is online homework through the required eTextbook, but it will all be due by the end of the semester.
To pass with a good grade utilize the practice exams, do the homework, and iclicker quizzes. The exams were hard at first, but to do well on them use the practice exam, study all the definitions on the practice exam, and understand the concepts/how everything connects. Otherwise, Professor Madden was not a bad professor, I really enjoyed his class.
Madden's class was great. During lecture there is a LOT to take in, however I did not feel like I needed to study all the time for his class. I did not buy/rent a book. He has ample content online to follow and study guides for his test. USE THEM TO STUDY. His class has hundreds of people in it, so stay on top of assignments to be noticed by him.
Prof Madden is such a sweetheart, he is very obviously a smart man. A lot of his lectures are legitimately just him reading the slides so it's a little boring. But, if you take notes, show up to the quizzes, and do the homework you'll do just fine in the class.
Dr Madden is a wonderful professor. Very chill, presents material clearly, exams are all multiple choice. Super entertaining lectures, he likes cracking jokes to get a chuckle out of the class. Four exams plus online hw, and optional iclicker quizzes. I didn't do the iclicker and easily expect an A. Take him if you can!!!
I have taken Dr. Madden twice now: once for cellular bio and now for microbiology. I think he makes the exams way harder than they need to be. He tries to make lecture content fun. The class wasn't terrible, I just hated the content. He is a good option to pick though if you have to take this class.
He's very fun and likes to insert insightful commentary and stories in his lectures. He posts a practice test for each of the 4 exams which gives you a very good idea of what the tests are like.
I previously wrote a review when I took BIOL 213 with Dr. Madden last semester. Overall, the format of the class is pretty much the same. The difference I would say is that you should study a lot more in microbiology compared to BIOL 213 since it has much more content. Great lecturer!
He's very nice and knowledgeable. sometimes goes on side tangents that are loosely related to the lecture. 4 exams and no cumulative final. each is very material heavy and can be difficult to remember everything so study hard. provides practice exams and recorded lectures, can curves exams sometimes.
he's honestly the sweetest guy and his lectures are entertaining. he even stayed behind some days to answer students' questions about due dates, material, etc. tests were long and fairly difficult but looked EXACTLY like the practice tests. and he gives you subtle ideas to remember during the lecture bc they're probably on the test. a great prof
curves were amazingggg. very generous and makes sure to go over any questions about the tests after they've been handed back.
HE IS THE BEST BIO PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. TAKE HIM!!
Great lectures, easy to learn content, easy A if effort is put in
Fun professor, but his exams are awful. They are needlessly confusing for a introductory level class and his curves are only a extra 2.5 points...that's not going to do much for anyone let's be honest. He said he was pleased when the exam average was 68%. Overall save yourself unless you already are an expert at biology.
Cool guy, take him. He's a great professor who knows what he's teaching. Don't be scared to ask questions, and make sure to pay attention in class and study a bit in order to do well.
For an entry lvl class, my experience was absolutely horrible with this prof, he would give 2.5 curve which did nothing when most of our class did bad on exams the class avg was low like for an entry class I expected this to be much easier except it wasn't. Lectures feel pointless to show up as you have to read 80+ slides to know what's going on
The professor is very friendly and expands upon what's on the slides, giving a lot of optional quizzes and homework for extra points. Only problems are the 4 exams and the review sessions barely help. It's recommended to do the practice exams instead since most answers on there are similar to the actual exam papers. Would recommend taking him.
Professor Madden is one of the best professors at GMU! He offers students practice exams, study guides designed by learning assistants (LAs), and mini quizzes each week that can only help boost your grade! All lectures are recorded, so if you miss a class you can always watch online. The material does require studying, so prepare to do the work.
Madden is such a great professor! Great lectures, all recorded, with tons of expansion of the info off the slides. Utilize the practice exams, optional quizzes, and online makeup exam policy!! Note that because the class is so large, you will likely not get to meet with him 1-on-1 often, but he does have discussion boards for any questions.
Amazing professor, very passionate about metabolic pathways! His lectures are so fun to listen to and he explains topics very clearly. He's also clear on what topics will be tested on. I would take him again and again if I could. Some of the topics can be a bit difficult but if you actually take the time to understand it and study, you'll be fine.
The class was big, but overall really good. The lectures would go through a lot of topics, which made it a bit hard to keep up with. However, Madden was great! And the practice exams offered were really helpful.
As a bio major, I definitely recommend Dr. Madden. He gives you so many opportunities to get your grades up and he's quite nice and knowledgable. He also gives practice tests to help you prepare for exams but they aren't exactly like the exams so don't rely on them. The TA review slides are what helped me actually get good grades on the exams.
I've taken Dr. Madden for both 213 and now 305. I do agree with the other reviews stating that you need to study more for 305. However, this semester all the exams were curved. He's a solid professor and is passionate about microbiology. Go to the LA reviews and do the practice exam questions. Be prepared to study a lot more than cell bio.
Dr. Madden is amazing! His lectures were amazing! His practice exams were similar to the actual exams but don't rely entirely on the practice exams when it comes to studying. Study the material, come to class, and do the homework. But still, looking at the practice exams after studying the material gives you an idea of how he formats his tests.
Professor Madden's BIO213 class is well-structured, with engaging lectures and helpful practice exams. Attendance is mandatory, but the material can be challenging. Using resources like unstuckstudy ai alongside the textbook and class notes can really boost your performance.
Do not take this professor if you want to keep a high GPA!!!! He's a nice guy and all, but his exams are ridiculous. Some of the questions that are asked are nowhere in the powerpoints. . . I've checked. People love him because you can take the hws and exams anytime throughout the semester, but its so not worth it if the exams are impossible.
Nice guy but tests are HARD. LA's are so useless.
As long as you study hard and do what you should do as a good student you would earn your award. Additionally, Dr Madden is super helpful he answers question in class and very helpful during the test (O also if you can take paper take it paper, and ask him about test question if you are confuse). He's class is worth the time!
I took Dr. Madden for both Bio 213 and Bio 305. He is the best professor! Just attend class go to and look at his practice tests while you study they are similar to actual exam. But for Bio 305 you gotta study way more than cell bio. The final for this Bio 305 was hard but I highly recommend taking Dr. Madden he made this course class is enjoyable
People get different versions of the exam and some are more similar to the practice exam than others. He curves to a 75% if the average is lower. Madden posts his lecture videos. Lab is 1/4th of the grade, and HW and iClicker are easy 100%s and 1/4th of the grade. Exams are half of the grade.
He has very engaging lectures that are enjoyable to attend. He gives you all the materials you need to succeed in his class. His exams are very similar to the practice exams, and I didn't think they were particularly difficult. If you do all the reading and watch the lectures you'll do fine on them. The quizzes are a nice grade cushion.
Attendance is not required. Exams are offered in person and online. His exams are tricky. Despite changing my study methods and allocating more time into his material, my exam grades rarely budged. Complete homework until 100 points are achieved, so not all homeworks needed to be completed. The top 8 quiz grades to act as an additional exam grade.
I had him for 213 in the fall, and we just finished Micro. Attend class, take notes, pay attention in lecture and study well, and you should get a good grade. One of the most fun classes I've ever taken at Mason. If you study the practice tests, you will at least get a 75. Also watch the online lectures, they help a lot with reviewing.
Professor Madden is truly a pioneer in biology instruction. He really cares about what he does; and his passion seeps into his coursework. He tells funny puns, makes it intriguing to interact with his content, and takes cellular biology to a new level of understanding. I really appreciated having him as an instructor and would suggest to all.
He was a nice and genuine guy. His lectures were decent, but get ready to put a lot of outside work in to succeed. He is very generous with his curving and grading, which makes it hard to fail his class. Sometimes his online exams are a bit harder than in person, but the curve makes up for it. Study a couple weeks in advance and you'll be fine.
