His lectures are very informative and usually fairly interesting. He posts the slides online so you really don't need the book just study those and maybe google a bit. 5 very passable 50q tests, lowest score dropped and a short paper.
Loved this class, he really knows his material and enjoys teaching. He makes the class realy interesting. He posts his slides online, and attendance isn't mandatory but I don't know why people wouldn't go, its a very interesting class!! 5 tests, lowest score gets dropped. 2 short papers. No homework.
He does not explain things very well. My class averages for grades are like 1/3 A and B; 1/3 C; and 1/3 D and F. I don't recommend this teacher.
5 exams 2 short papers. easy grader on the papers. drops lowest exam grade. gives study guides for exams. exams are SUPER easy! very good professor to take: young, funny, energetic. just show up & pay attention. if you want an easy class to ease into college, take this GE class. high recommend. loved this class! made me take interest in politics!
He tries really hard to make the class easy (drops lowest test score, study guide, etc.) but he is very monotone and hard to stay interested in (especially at 8am!) but overall, not bad
Class was interesting and pretty easy. Not sure how anyone could not at least get a B in this class. Just go to lecture and take notes and you should be fine. Professor is young and down to earth. Good GE class to take.
Very straight-forward and fair! I would recommend him for sure. 5 exams - all 30 multiple choice questions and there is always a helpful study guide. Also two very short papers and a cumulative final.
I love this class! He's kind of young and hip! He makes Political Science something you'll be interested in. Always gives you a study guide, same things on the test! Attendance is not mandatory. Posts all his slides online, so if you're busy or having a rough day, you don't really need to come to class! TAKE HIM AS YOUR PROF!
Class was very straightforward and interesting. We wrote two papers following a 5-point assessment of foreign policy decisions that he uses frequently throughout the course and took 3 exams. He is available and helpful in office hours and responds quickly to emails. As a CSULB poli sci alum, I would definitely recommend this professor.
He is by far the best professor on campus! Before taking the class, I was uninterested about Poli Sci. Afterwards, I came to love it. He's funny, witty, and intelligent (classes are interesting). He answers all your questions. He's very approachable and down to earth. 5 easy exams, 1 final, and 2 easy essays. I definitely recommend!!! Easy A.
His lectures are clear and interesting. He is a great professor. The class itself was very easy. There are two papers and four tests which are very easy. Definitely recommend taking his class,
He's a great lecture hall prof., meaning that his lectures aren't boring because he's young and attractive looking, and the way he speaks is really informative yet entertaining. He has a lot of in-class discussions that relate to his topic, and likes to hear what students have to say. Overall great professor!
5 exams (only highest 4 counts for gradesdrops lowest score), 2 short papers, and a cumulative final. His class was pretty easy. He only takes attendance when he thinks a lot of people skipped (this usually happens the lecture right after an exam) and is counted toward your grade. Everything you need to know is presented in his slides.
His lectures can get boring but it's pretty easy to pass the class. 5 exams (1 dropped), 2 papers, and final. The exams and finals are super easy and easy grader for papers. Takes FOREVER to post grades on BB. Takes attendance randomly. Overall, he is a chill person, dorky but not a pushover. Take him for this GE.
Professor M. is great. He makes witty comments that make the class more interesting. Lectures can be long, but he tends to finish before the entire period. Tests, papers, and final exam are all quite easy as long as you pay attention and study. He gives you very helpful study guides too.
Really easy, yet informal class. The lectures can get pretty long, but it will help to be there for the test. Essays are pretty easy to right and as long as you listen to the lectures and review the notes, you'll be fine. Great class!
He has been my favorite professor at CSULB. I had a tough semester and he was completely understanding and helped me with anything I needed. Office hours are key.
Mahoney really encourages you to carry out an argument and validate your points. Class is largely based on lectures, which can be dry but is interesting if you like politics. Readings required but won't kill your grade if you slack on them. 2 midterms w in class essay, 2 5-7pg papers, 2 in class essays for the final. Would definitely take again.
study his slides for the tests, study the test for the final and you'll pass with an A no hw, 3 papers but 1 is optional so only 2 essays (2-3 pages long) stay awake in his class though because he will point you out like no lie!
Easiest class ever. Attended class all semester, didn't read assigned chapters, did 2 easy papers n final and passed with A. Textbook not required unless you want to know specifics. Study off from powerpoints he posts on beachboard and class notes and you'll pass. Somewhat funny. Respects your opinion. Gives study guides in class. Recommend.
Posts all his powerpoint online. Class is for an explanation of slides. Only takes attendance when he notices people missing. Study guides before each test. 5 tests, two 3-page papers, One final. Drops lowest test score. will pass test if u study day of test!! He's cute/young but strict. He will call u out if u talksleeptext. Loves participation.
Honestly I thought I was going to hate this class but turned out to be one of my favorites. The professor gave amazing lectures, he's funny, clear, and easy to understand. If you study you'll do well in the class. Gives study guides, and posts lectures online, 2 essays but easy grader. Take his class for POSC!
This class was extremely easy. The topic at hand can be boring but he makes it interesting. The class consists of 5 tests, 2 papers and a final exam. Would definitely recommend!
Mahoney is a great professor who makes it clear what he expects from students, and he provides study guides which are extremely beneficial. He does however call students out, so as long as you don't fall asleep in class or come in late you are golden. I highly recommend this professor.
Really good at getting students involved in discussion. The Beachboard articles are all excellent. The class isn't hard I missed most of the semester and got a B. Easily one of the better professors I've had at CSULB highly recommend.
Clear grading criteria and reviews tests the class before. 5 tests (Lowest score gets dropped), 2 papers (2-3 pages in length), and a cumulative final. Tries to be unbiased as possible when lecturing, and do not belittle opinions. Definitely recommend for a political science course.
This guy was AMAZING! Loved taking him this semester. Two papers, 5 tests (he will drop one low scoring test) and a final. He hands out study guides that are basically the test. Take him already!
Easy A, but a horrible teacher. Explains thing poorly, up to the point I stopped going to class and just self studied. Don't take this class if you actually want to learn about political science.
So glad I was able to switch into this class during the first week. There was 1 spot open from someone who had just dropped it. Immensely easier and more clear grading criteria than the other class I was in. The election this year pushed back our schedule a bit but it was fine.
Class consisted of two essays that were graded easily, five multiple choice exams (lowest one is dropped), and the final. He posts the slides online but during lecture he explains them in greater detail. Overall the class was pretty easy, only used the textbook for one of the essays.
5 multiple choice exams (lowest is dropped), one cumulative final and two essays. He provides study guides for all of his exams and most of the material is related to the material that was taught in high school so it's a pretty easy class.
Tests were not so bad, you can easily get 90-100% if you study his slides and the study guides he gives so don't need to buy the text book. 5 tests with the lowest grade dropped, 2 papers, and a final. Pretty chill dude, just don't talk during class or use your phone cuz he will call you out.
He knows what he's teaching throughly. Lecture powerpoints are short and easy to read. Most students stop attending class after a while but just by attending the class you'll get good grades. 5 exams and 1 final. Drops lowest exam. It was fun going to his class.
I am so glad that I chose this professor for my second attempt at taking polisci. I had to drop it my first time b/c the 1st professor was all over the place. On the other hand Mohoney was a great teacher on this subject. He made me understand the basics of politics. Don't get me wrong I studied all his lectures and skimmed the book! Take Him!
5 tests but drops the lowest test score. Two easy 3-4 page papers as long as you use the book and lecture slides. Takes random attendance, but doesn't count it towards the grade. He uses it for when people ask for extra credit. Well-spoken lectures. He made me love Political Science!
Really great teacher! Amazing lectures! Attendance is not required but he takes random attendance use to bump up your grade. 2 papers, sound hard but he tells you exactly what he wants. 5 tests and 1 final but he gives out VERY helpful study guides. No book needed & he posts his slides online. Very caring & down to earth teacher. Highly recommend!
Don't buy the book, just look at the PPTs. Tests, finals and essay get crammed in the end so prepare to procrastinate. There's a test every 3-4 lecture so materials are vague. Questions are easy for educated guesses and most are common sense. I zoned out like 90% of the class but still did well studying the night before exams on only the PPTs.
Professor Mahoney is great. He makes the class interesting. His tests are fairly simple just review the slides and go to lecture and youll pass the class no problem. Two papers but hes not a tough grader.
Professor Mahoney will try to convince you to buy the textbook, says you won't pass the exams without it, he's lying. You don't need it, my book collected dust. His lectures are the exams, just study them the night before and you're good to go. 5 exams, drops the lowest score and 2 papers. Final consists of questions taken from previous tests.
He does a great job at explaining what will be on exams and uses real life examples for lecture. He is very caring. I highly recommend you record what he says when reviewing the study guide. Review all the slides and you will be fine. Easy grader on essays. Do not buy the textbook. Try to find the pdf online.
The tests are all multiple choice. There are two essays that are each 4-5 pages. The tests were similar to the material on the power points except there were a few questions that I did not recognize from his slides. There are 5 tests not including the final exam. He drops the lowest test out of those 5. He remains neutral when talking about topics.
I thought this class was going to be an easy A, but I had to be cautious. He grades sort of tough on the papers so dont expect those to be your anchors (I put in a decent amount of effort). It's easy to miss a few questions lose a lot of points on the tests, so don't get too lax. Reading the book helped because I didn't attend all of the lectures.
Lectures can be heavy and he'll call you out if you talk during lecture but overall easy class
Lectures are clear, slides are key to exam questions. Exams are challenging even though he gives key terms as the 'study guide'. I hardly read the textbook but need it to cite for papers. The papers were strictly graded, grammar and spelling. Exams are challenging even though he gives key terms as the 'study guide'. Vary passionate, you'll LEARN!
Professor Mahoney was a cool guy! He doesn't always take attendance but believe me, he knows when you are not in class. I don't know how he did it but he mesmorized everyone's name and faces by the second week of school. Lectures are nice and detailed. Never used the book. Two exams and two papers, simple grading criteria.
Really easy class. You don't need the book if you attend class regularly. Also, he gives out 2 papers which he clearly goes over and gives examples of what he wants. You can find most of the info in his slides and online. Study guides weren't so helpful for me so I just reviewed his slides a couple of times and that seemed to work. He is great!!!
Amazing professor. 5 tests i believe & drops the lowest one. 2 essays which are very easy & he guides you through both of them. Attendance not mandatory at all mostly everyone just went for tests days. Book not mandatory at all. Got an B cause I did bad on first quiz due to personal reasons. All tests are multiple choice/true and false.
So if you don't get the book, that's fine cause his tests are based on the slides, and he review the slides before the exam too. Lectures are well organized, and Mahoney is well versed in the topic. Tests are multiple choice, and there are like 2 papers. This class felt like a regular high school class. Easy G.E.
5 exams and drops the lowest grade, 2 essays, 1 in-class activity, and 1 final. All exams are based on the powerpoints and he guides you through the essays. Exams are given back, which you should study for the final. Attendance is not mandatory but he takes attendance randomly (extra points). Easy to talk to and a pretty laid back class. EASY A.
Pretty easy class. Professor Mahoney makes lectures interesting. There are 5 exams which he drops the lowest one. Study his powerpoints and go to lectures because he says somethings that are not in his PowerPoint, but are in his exams. 2 papers in which can be somewhat confusing, but he gives you possible evidence that you can include. Take him (:
An easy class and learned a lot in it!Quizzes are direct and the 2 papers always have sources he includes to help you out. Hes very nice and open to questions.
Charles is a great teacher as well as nice and helpful. There was two 6-8 page analytical papers, four 250-300 word response papers (or video responses) and a final exam (20 questions). He also sent us articles to help with our analytical papers. Charles gave good feedback as well. I found this online class kind of easy.
I had always struggled understanding some aspects of American history and war-related topics but his explanations and knowledge really helped me understand American history and politics, his course has changed the way I see American policy and it has opened a new interest for me as poli-sci major. One of the best Pol. Sci professors! 482 btw
Dr. Mahoney has quizzes that are based solely on his lectures. The syllabus says the textbook is required, but we never used it this semester so save yourself those $60! Overall, it's a pretty chill class with only 1 class every 2 weeks and exams, including the final, are open book and unlimited time. There are only 2 papers at the end.
Easy POSC 100 class. the 2 papers are worth 50% of final grade. 20% Final. 30% quizzes. Super easy. I got a F on one paper and still managed to get an A. Do extra credit because you never know when you need it. The maximum EC he gives is 5% of final grade so do as much as you can.
I would definitely recommend Dr. Mahoney's class to get that GE credit out of the way! He's very understanding in terms of granting extensions for either of the two papers, and his class is very organized and the grading straightforward--really, the only way to go wrong in his class is if you slack off since much of the work you do is independent.
Unlike most professors who lecture all day, he commits a large portion of his class to have discussions among students. Weekly readings, 2 papers, participation counts for credit, 4 written responses, and one final exam. If you want to hear different perspectives on foreign policy, this is the class for you. Very fair and respectful to all people
Participation was 20% of the grade, but if you make an effort to talk in class every once in a while you should be good. Only other things graded are short answer responses and a couple of papers. The class was really interesting though, I barely knew anything about foreign policy going in and now I can argue with my conservative family confidently
Super chill professor who made class easy & fun. I attended this class like twice and finished with an A. All quizzes & finals are open book and are open for a week. The 2 papers are toughly graded by the TA, but there's a lot of helpful resources posted & review sessions. Definitely take this class, Charles is a great teacher who is understanding.
If you need to take POSC 100, you should take it with him. There are a couple of quizzes and the final exam, they are the open note, and you have a whole week to complete. If you read or attend class, you'll do great. There are 2 papers, but if you attend class and the review session, you'll can get all points or at least most. Prompts are clear.
I thought this was a great class. Professor Mahoney does a great job of facilitating discussions about current events, reminding students of upcoming assignments, and giving a well-rounded introduction to POSC. I found this class to be informative and pretty straightforward. Try on the essays; he doesn't grade super easy. Nice and funny guy!
This class was okay, we had 5 exams which each were 5 points multiple choice. We also had a final exam. We had 2 papers too which were 4-5 pages. His classes were ok but at the beginning of the class he says you have to have the book, but you actually don't. You can get a free PDF online.
Professor is super organized and explains assignments in great detail to ensure all students understand! Lots of interesting discussions during this class! Quizzes and finals are open note and open book! I recommend if you are looking for a chill political science class!
Professor Mahoney is great! 5 quizzes- super easy. 2 papers- weren't too bad as he went over the topics in class w/ resources (TAs grade a little harshly though). Final- similar to the quizzes, just longer. This wasn't a hard class, just put in the effort and you're bound to get an A. Don't buy the textbook. Mahoney was also cute tbh.
Engaging, entertaining and informative lectures with slides included! Only a few quizzes which were open book/note and had a week to complete. Two papers included in the course which he outlines in detail and informs on exactly what he expects. Final is just like the quizzes, open book/note. I would highly recommend him to anyone!
synch course but he was a chill professor that would respond to emails and is good at participation. The subject is pretty easy so it helped with understanding and for participation. 5 quizzes 2 papers and the final, but the quizzes were easy as it was everything we talked about, no need to buy the book bc it was a pdf.
There are 5 quizzes and one final that are all easy and open-book. The only other assignments are two 4-5 page essays that the professor makes easy to understand to write. He did give each paper about three weeks to complete which seemed like a lot of time but actually wasn't so I recommend starting early.
One of the easiest professors you'll probably take. All quizzes & final exam are open-book - time to complete is unlimited. Class also consists of 2 papers given toward the end of the semester but he gave lots of time to complete. Grading criteria for papers was clear & straight to the point. FYI: No need to buy the t.b. there's a free pdf :)
Dr. Mahoney is really kind, caring, and laid back. There are 5 quizzes and a final that all are based on his lectures and open note. There are 2 papers that are based on info from his lectures as well. Super easy class, I highly recommend for your D2 requirement.
He was straight forward as to what he wanted in the class. The only assignments that were more time consuming were the two papers, though he did make it easier to write as he did provide multiple refrences and did proof read it before you can turn it in to adjust your paper. He is a caring, communicating with him is the best option.
Hey does anyone know where you can get the free pdf for the textbook?
I really enjoyed Professor Charles especially when it came to writing essays. He really helped the step-by-step process. And also give you the help you need. The quizzes are easy if you study the material that is given. He is very understanding and wants everyone to pass his class. Would definitely take this class again.
Mahoney's class is very easy, it's an online synchronous class with the first 30-40 minutes of lecture and then class discussion. You're graded on 5 quizzes (20 mcq), 2 papers, final (40 mcq), and 10% participation/attendance on random dates. He covers all the content needed for the papers during lecture and provides sources to use for each paper.
Very chill class. Few online quizzes that were very easy. Has 2-3 papers near the end of the semester, mediocre grader but write well. Attend class as it's part of your grade and participate if you can but not forced. Can find the textbook online through pdf. The class overall is good for a ge course.
This class is pretty easy and Mahoney is an amazing professor that knows what he is talking about. One thing to note is that a majority of the classwork ( 2 papers and a final) all happen back to back at the end of the year which can be stressful. But, overall a good course that taught me a lot.
No to little Homework. Just attend the lectures most of the time and you will pass. 2 papers but they are easy. Only thing is wished the Papers weren't so close to each other and were more spread out throughout the semester. Really nice professor and answers questions clearly.
GREAT CLASS!!! Mahoney is very understanding. Quizzes/exams are based on lectures its open notes for both. 2 Papers due but super easy if you plan out your time (he has lots of time to complete it). His grading is fair. Very chill Class!!
Chill class. Professor knows the subject well. Quizzes are easy but the papers are harder. Really spend time working on the papers and everything else is easy.
Great class. Just pay attention and it's hard not to get an A. Grading is straight forward. He explains things well and is pretty laid back and understanding.
Grading consisted of 5 quizzes, 2 essays that are 5 pages, and the final exam. Lectures were of him just going over the slides. His quizzes are open note and open book. He doesn't require you to buy the book but you can if you want to.
Take this class during the election. I honestly learned a lot about the elections in the US.
Chill class. Everything was open book and note. There were 5 quizzes, 2 papers (5 pages each), and a final. He uploads recorded lectures. Book is not mandatory but it is useful. Mahoney keeps a neutral stance in discussions and since its mainly the students sharing their own opinions. Very informative and got me involved in politics for once.
Took online and was super simple. Just show up for class, participate and you'll be good. Quizzes were open book and exams too. Papers had clear guidelines and he gives you the prompts with good time. Would recommend.
He requires you to put a lot into this class workload wise but he's a great and straight to the point professor. You'll do a lot of writing but if you commit and stay up to date with the material it's a very interesting (good) course. The material is very important I think as well with what is going on in the world right now. Readings are free!
took his class fall 2024, he was so easy! his lecs are very boring but you'll pass even without paying attention. all answers for the quizzes can be found online and the papers are not hard. he has TA's help him grade so if you aren't satisfied, you can tell him :) i loved this man, 10/10
He's a nice professor but seems a bit agitated? I missed two quizzes and told him it was okay (I was sick)- I just wanted to know what my final grade would look like. HE then insisted I take the quizzes and told me how much he was doing a favor for me, how odd it was to beg to take a quiz (I didn't) and implied that I never went to class.... ?
cool man but he gets annoyed very fast lol. His class is alright, lectures are boring and long but i like learning about the gov so it was interesting to me at least. also there is one paper (1200 words at least) it is easy but tedious. show up to class everyday because he will take away online quizzes (open note) if he notices a decline
About midway through the semester professor changed the quizzes to online. This helped me get an A in the class. I think he really cares and wants everyone to do good.
There's no homework. You just have six quizzes and one paper. If you study and read the book, the quizzes are pretty easy. They started out being in person, but then he switched them to online. During lectures, it's mostly about paying attention and taking notes. He sends out the paper prompt early and makes the instructions super clear.
Take this class if you want an easy A. We had our quizzes and final online and had 1 big paper but it was really easy and clear to follow also. I honestly never went to class because lectures are just slideshows that he posts later but he was really nice and cared about his students and grades.
There was a total of 6 quizzes, 1 paper and a final exam. At the beginning of the semester, quizzes were in-person, but he switched it online. Lectures are uploaded on canvas the following day. Attendance was mandatory for us to keep quizzes and the final exam online. Overall, a very chill professor. Paper was graded fairly by TA's and professor.
This class consisted of 6 quizzes, a final exam and 1 paper. The paper is worth more than the final and quizzes. Our quizzes and final exam were online, but it was mandatory to show up for class to keep them online. Make sure to review the textbook and lectures before quizzes/exam. Overall, the professor was chill and wanted students to pass.
Great professor. First few weeks quizzes were in person but he made them online as long as EVERYONE showed up to lecture. Quizzes were very lecture heavy. Very easy class if you put your part. Don't procrastinate on the final paper! Will be easy if you do it ahead. Show up to class and pay attention and it will be a breeze.
TAKE HIM. Everything's good and light work; don't work too much on yourself. He's willing to help out. Quizzes are easy if you look over the lectures. Papers are easy. He's open to hear your opinions and participation matters!!! he records the Zoom meeting if you miss it.
