Awesome guy, cares about his students and will go out of his way for you. Passionate about anthropology and has some great stories to kill class time with!
This guy is a big-headed ****!
Great stories in class and fun to listen to in lecture, but very big-headed and cocky when you go in for help (feels like a police interrogation sometimes!)
The course had a lot of material to read, but if you did it his test were no problem. Very entertaining prof.
Pretty arrogant. Not my favorate proff. Ok at teching this course (but then again, a trained seal could teach this course)
He's an awesome prof. Always talks to, and helps out, students. Really easy-going and gets along well with students.
Very easy class, the prof was hilarious and has great stories about his work in Africa. Took out a guitar and performed a Bob Marley song on the last day of class.....bet you won't see any other prof do that!!! Very entertaining!!! Makes learning fun!!
Arrogant and sometimes disrespectful.Stickler for group projects. Interesting lectures but the assignments are horrible!
HSOC 201 remains one of my favourite classes I've ever taken thanks largely in part to Dr. Mather's unique style. Instead of piling on M/C quizzes & exams, his assignments actually require thought and you truly do get something out of it. He is well-spoken and cares for his students' success!
Awesome professor, one of my favorites! He was a tough marker but the material was really interesting and very well presented. I didn't find him arrogant at all!
He's not a bad prof, but he moves through the material so slowly! A bit of a hard marker, but funny in class and cares about the subject.
Really cool guy. Knew his stuff, great stories about doing research in Africa. Was passionate about the course. Was interesting. Gives study guides before exams and tons of clues about the content of the exams.
This class is generally very easy. The only challenging thing about this class is the course load - it is a substantial amount for an introductory course. Also, the timing of the assignments aren't great. Nothing was assigned in September, but an essay or project was due almost every two weeks after that.
the man is a ****in ****!! its too bad that he's really good at teaching but his personality is sh!t and HE IS ARROGANT. Very interesting course, taught enthusiastically but is a straight up ****
find a new job buddy
I don't understand the bitterness below! This is the best prof I've had in my 4 years here! No other prof comes close.
Trapezoid head!
soooo coool. he played his gituar and sung on the last day of class.
Interesting lectures, horrible marker, tons of group projects. He is arrogant.
umm.. i think hes cool. Not a bad prof! He's not boring, and i think his assignments are not bad either. you learn a lot in his classes. I think hes one of the best prof i had last semester!
Meh... he's a funny guy but his exams are really hard... extremely picky at the specifics make sure you know your stuff well.
This class was really interesting, I took it as an option. However, it requires heavy memorization and has a large reading component. Tests are fair, but you really need to know the detail to do well.
I liked how he could project his voice across a 400 student class, but I didn't find him very clear with his notes. He elaborated too much on concepts, which made it difficult to figure out what was important to study. On that note, he focuses alot on case studies, so make sure to know those for the tests! At least he was entertaining tho!
I've never struggled in a class, before, but I did in this one. Tests are heavily dependent on both the lectures and the readings, so I don't recommend skipping. Really fun prof, though. The material was incredibly interesting. He will actually make an attempt to learn your name, which I think is important in larger classes.
Very fun proffesor. Marks really hard and tough to know what is important, not an easy mark class

Mather is a great lecturer- very entertaining and knowledgeable. Worth going to classes for. That said, be prepared for lots of readings and rather tough marking on tests and assignments. In the end though, he attempts to balance grades so you get a decent mark. Hard work, but he is a great prof.
Passionate about the class, but so arrogant. High on himself. Laughs at his own jokes when no one else is laughing. Unwilling to help you. Very rude. If you email him to ask something, you've just ruined his day. Tests are so detailed it's almost impossible to get a good mark.
A good prof overall, though I found the class a bit dull. It is important to attend lectures as much as possible because they often show videos in class. All of the material, including texbook readigs, notes, and class videos are covered on the exams. Pay attention to all detail (especially tribe names) as it is always tested.
Amazingly kept the class awake at 8:00 in the morning. Knows how to teach but has brutal exams. Love his Bob Marley songs that he does on his guitar.
Your degree is not truly complete until you take this course with Dr. Mather. Incredible teacher, interesting class. Tests are fair, but you must READ the textbook and take notes on the case studies he discusses in class. Connecting authors to their respective ideas is important.
He's a good prof, pretty funny, interesting course material. Very difficult class for me, however, did rather poorly even though the same studying habits have served me well in almost all other Anth classes. I strongly suspect that his TA marked work in reference to previous test scores, so make sure to score well on the first test (which I didnt)
he is very arrogant and often is quite rude to students. if you ask him for assistance, he is quite unwilling to help and acts as though you have ruined his entire day. his tests cover very specific materials, so it is mandatory to attend all classes and pay close attention to your readings.
Really funny, keeps lectures interesting, tells lots of personal stories and jokes. Also the course load is easy to follow, the key is just to keep up with the readings. I really enjoyed my class with him. (P.s. he is also totally hot... can be distracting)
I had a friend who said she loved him... but you might as well show up 20 mins late or not at all. Wastes a good 15-20 minutes on irrelevent material. Teaches off his slides which are available online. Exam is all textbook... which DOESN'T make him a good teacher, or make it worth $500. Wouldn't recommend.
Everything taught was pretty much right out of the textbook, and he lectured of the slides which were posted online. He was really interesting and kept lectures/material engaging. Exams weren't cumulative (YES!), and he was really specific about what was on the tests. Excellent prof.
High textbook and time requirement, even compared to the 400/500 level science courses. Lots of discussion about current events and relevance. Exams very hard and didn't spoon fed you what you needed to know. Told us to know the articles and he meant it, details and all. Awesome class but no GPA booster in any shape or form.
Class is very hard, don't expect easy marks. He is a good professor, but expects you to work for and earn your grade. Textbook reading is HEAVY and class attendance is recommended as he hints at the exams and gives information that will be on the exams but not found in the text, even though in the first class he says it will be all textbook.
He's pretty funny and likable, but his tests are bloody hard and he knows it. Plus, this class had a ton of challenging writing assignments.
This was a very difficult course. His assignments often are not explained clearly and when students asked what he wanted he would not give clear answers. Not approachable at all and can be very rude to students. Stories are funny but a lot of useless information and not what you need to do well in this class!
his lectures aren't too boring and he has some decent jokes, but his exams are way too detailed for a junior class. avoid this class/prof is you just want an easy class to fill junior option requirement.
Not bad in general although the material was somewhat dry, lectures tended to be decent. His tests consisted of a lot of crap from the textbook. So remember to make a list of all the tribes in each reading in the text. He will undoubtedly test you on your knowledge of seemingly useless readings.
Dr. Mather is a terrible prof. His tests are hard but you probably need this course for your anthropology degree to graduate. Tough it out and just get through it... Good Luck!
Dr.Mather's is one of the funniest prof's I have ever had! Yes..he is a tough grader, but this is a senior level course so this is to be expected! He is unclear and dances around questions, but this is to teach you to think for yourself. His assignments are tough, but he spells out EXACTLY what he wants. Test's weren't bad! I loved this class!
Very arrogant and can be condescending to students. Not helpful at all when you go to ask him questions. Asks questions on the tests that seem to have no relevance to the class and his assignments are HARD! I would not have taken this class if it was not a degree requirement, just wish there was another prof who taught it!
Dr Mather makes you work for your grade, but he's a fair marker. Smart and hilarious, and he cares about his students. You'll have to do the readings and think about them to succeed in the course. Sorry, kids. It's university, though, so you probably should have figured that out by now.
I thought he was engaging, interesting and got you thinking, he helps you with your questions and is a very fair marker. I enjoy his teaching... also hes easy on the eyes! lol
Absolute determinist! This guy is soo wrapped up in his own opinion and specific field work its ridiculous! I learned nothing from him, he called genetic material 'stuff', told the whole class that they could not trade stocks because its controlled by bankers!? (I trade regularly). I could write a lot more! Worst Prof EVER!
The exams are pretty tough but with a reasonable amount of effort and a lot of textbook reading it's easy to succeed. Mather is funny, interesting, and passionate about his field.
Agree with the "determinist" comment. Not clear, not prepared for class. He seems to use the same assignments for years. Not helpful at all. If you don't have to take the course for a degree, stay away from it.
he was a nice engaging and understanding prof. Let me sit the midterm early cause i had 3 exams in one day . BUT if yu dont read the textbook INSIDE OUT u'll barely pass the exam.READ THE TEXT BOOK and attend classes cause in the final he gave 2-3 questions based on pics n slides n videos shown in class. He played bob marleys NO WOMAN on last day:)
Lecture was interesting, the textbook is VITAL 85% if not more of the tests are textbook material. Overall he is an interesting prof though, always has a story from when he was researching
Dr. Mather is a great lecturer and classes are fun and interesting. He does give study guides for exams however make sure you read the text book inside out! Marking for the short answer aspect of the exams is kinda questionable. Other than that, take the class and the professor!!
Dr. Mather is awesome. He grades pretty tough, but you become a better writer. He's not condescending and he made this class enjoyable.
Lectures are entertaining. Slides are used for notes and you have access to them before class. Tests can be difficult. Heavy reliance on the textbook for questions. Short answer questions required referencing authors and points made from the textbook to get marks. Lots of reading for this class.
Chuck is the epitome of university professor in my experience. His classes are challenging, the discussion engaging, lectures entertaining and his insight is clear and experienced. Read the material. If you don't you'll struggle, but why else are you in university?? He challenges students to write proficiently and use critical thinking
I have taken over 10 Uni classes and this is the first time I read the entire book from beginning to end without skipping chapters! Most classes you jump from chapters but not this class. With that said I read everything and still only received a B which was a 79, missed a B+ by 1 multiple choice question on either of the exams...
Best class I've ever taken. If you have an interest in medical anthropology, you will love this class. Lectures are SO interesting and engaging. However, it is a tough class. You need to read the entire textbook. Study hard you won't do well on the tests. Come to class. He will tell you what short answers questions will be on the test.
ANTH 341 was an awesome class! I enjoyed going to Professor Mather's lectures as he was funny and engaging and the material was interesting. However, like others have said, you need to read the textbook to do well on exams as questions can be very specific and a little random. Overall great class and if you put the work in it's not hard to do well.
Dr. Mathers is a very interesting professor, and the course itself is incredibly thought provoking. However, be prepared to read an entire text book front to back-and memorize tiny details. Tests seem to be almost more about memorization than application, but the course material is still very interesting.
He is awesome! You can tell he really enjoys what he does. Need to read the textbook, but the material is pretty interesting. Go to class, some of the questions are about things he talks about in class (plus classes are so much fun!) Tests are mostly based on textbook material with about 20% lecture notes maybe 15%. He is seriously amazing!
He's absolutely amazing! He is a very passionate professor and he really cares about his students. I highly recommend him.
Dr. Mather is an incredible lecturer and made the night class of three hours as enjoyable as sitting for three hours can be. He is also very helpful and willing to answer any questions either in person on rapidly by email. You definitely need to know the various examples and specific names for the examples, but other than that very fair tests.
Lectures are always entertaining and engaging! Does a great job of making the material interesting. He expects a fair bit from students so it's not an easy A, but he has the speaking skills and the enthusiasm to change the perspective of those who take his class.
Dr. Mather is a great prof. Don't get scared by the other reviews about having to read a lot. It's University and what you put in is what you'll get out. He is very enthusiastic, clear and helpful! I'd take another course with him. (the class material itself is kind of boring, but it's a first year course....)
You MUST use the textbook in this class. If you don't do the readings before class you can be a bit confused throughout the lecture. He is very knowledgeable and engaging when he speaks. Tests are very fair.
Very good prof at teaching anthropology. Amazing sense of humour. Textbook is optional. Would take his class again.
His lectures were clear and entertaining, his tests got harder over time, they were all multiple choice so be prepared to study. reading heavy course but still interesting and not dry. he showed us a few lame documentaries and movies in class though.
Great teacher! Took a 3 hour lecture with him and I was never bored. Everything in the class was presented well with clear slides. We watched relevant and very interesting videos that were on the test. 10/10 would take again
It's a vocab quiz + some questions related to videos and things he discussed during lecture. If you want an A, go to class, take notes from lecture and vids and memorize vocabs. If you are fine with a B, no need to go to lectures, just memorize the vocabs and guess on the lecture related questions. The prof himself is interesting and not boring.
An entertaining profs but the assignment are so long and worth only 10%. The class exam results were bi modal where half did very well and half didn't leaving little students in the 70-80% mark. Great prof but get ready to work hard!
This has been the worst class I have taken in the anthropology department, Dr. Mather was not helpful or respectful of his students. His assignment marks are all over the place, and he does not give good feedback so improving is difficult. Though this class only has 1 formal test it is VERY assignment/group work heavy. I do not recommend him.
Charles Mather is my all-time fave prof so far during my time at UofC. I learned so much during this course. Reading the text is very important, but makes in-class discussions fun and engaging. Often had insightful or hilarious anecdotes in class that only convinced me to show up everyday so I wouldn't miss out. I wish he taught all my courses.
I'm very torn. As a teacher giving a lecture, he's great. Super engaging, clearly knowledgeable, makes class fly by. On the other hand, I find him difficult to deal with on a personal level. Not necessarily disrespectful, but unforgiving of human error. Had a couple of out of class experiences that really soured my opinion of him, unfortunately.
Med anth showed me different ways medicine can be practiced around the world! He provides an in depth study guide with terms and questions that will be on the test. In lecture he goes over the textbook articles really well so you don't need to read that much if you listen and engage in class. Very enthusiastic prof!
For papers: time intensive but he literally GIVES you a doc saying 'do this for full marks'. I followed these & got 100% on all. (Last one was HARD). Your experience depends on what you're trying to get out of it: its NOT an easy A. You learn how to *be* an anthro by *applying* methodology (i.e. the whole POINT of a methods course). Good grief ppl.
Charles Mather is probably my favorite prof of all time. This dude is the chillest guy on Earth and his lectures are well formatted. If you wanna take efficient notes, I'd highly recommend bringing in a laptop because sometimes he'll zoom through slides. Other than that his teaching is really great and gives you study guides for your midterms!
I liked Dr. Mather. His lectures were fairly straightforward and engaging - he uses a lot of examples which always makes things more interesting. His tests are fairly representative of the material covered (although there seems to always be 1 or 2 curveballs). Be cautious with the study guides though: they don't cover everything on the tests.
Cool dude, very optimistic. Interesting lectures, even if it is just an intro class. His tests cover a lot of diverse material though, so it's probably a good idea to go to class. Shows (relevant) movies.
Dr. Mather's an amazing prof. So inspirational and funny. You can tell he really cares about his students and is so passionate about what he does. His lectures are engaging and interesting while also being super informative. Plus his stories make you not want to miss a class
Dr. Mather is a really funny guy, but when it comes to teaching I would not recommend. He kind of goes off on tangents and doesn't really know how to get to the point. His study guides are useless and he doesn't test on ANYTHING on the guides. Tests are multiple choice and short answer but the questions are written in such a confusing way.
Love him. Makes lectures engaging and really connects with his students.
I've had Mather for 3 classes and have mixed feelings about him... His lectures are engaging and he's very funny. My biggest issue is the wording of his test (Qs often have 2 arguably right answers, so it's hard not to overthink them). He also focuses on authors names a lot, so pay attention to that when reading about studies in the textbook.
As others stated, my take on Dr. Mather is torn. He is a great lecturer and a real hilarious guy. However, MAN does he love to go on tangents. Half the time in class was spent talking about stuff unrelated to the course material, and we ALWAYS fell behind. I enjoyed my classes with him but be ready to learn most the content on your own time.
He's a great prof and is clearly very passionate about what he teaches, his lectures are super fun and engaging but his midterms were really tricky and he asked super specific questions about material from lectures and the textbook that wasn't always highlighted. Make sure to pay close attention in class and read the textbook for his exams!
He is super funny and hosts an interesting class but the tests are extremely complicated. I took this as a "gpa booster" as I had tough courses this semester. Ironically, this class held my LOWEST mark this semester. SO DO NOT TAKE IT AS A GPA BOOSTER! Ur welcome. Tests are worded weird and way too specific. He tests on lecture, textbook & slides!
He is hilarious and keeps lectures interesting, however, my biggest issue with him is his exam questions. The written is fine, but it's not worth as much as the mc where it makes up the bulk of the exam and I did not like how he makes his mc questions at all. Love the guy but would not like to go through that kind of stress again
class got very dry very fast, could not find the motivation to attend, tests were easy seeing that I just memorized a few terms here and there and came out with a B for the most part. Wouldn't recommend this class or this prof to anyone though
This class has two midterms and then the final. There are no assignments. You need to read the textbook or you'll fail like I did sooo read and study.
Lots of trick questions on tests, hell test on things he said during lectures. Will specifically spell terms incorrectly on multiple choice tests to trick you into picking the wrong answer. His lectures were great but I didnt appreciate the way he tests. Im a straight A student, studied 3 times as much for his class and couldnt surpass B+
Took this class as a GPA booster and turned out to be my lowest mark. Theres only three tests, no assignments in the course so in that sense it is pretty low maintenance. Tests are mostly on textbook readings and are written awkwardly. Mather is very passionate and VERY enthusiastic (yells) but can get very off topic.
I know a lot of people like Dr. Mather, but he is extraordinarily rude. The class itself isn't hard, and he clearly cares about anthropology but he has absolutely 0 respect for his students
He is incredibly rude and disrespectful to his students and makes fun of them for getting any questions wrong and makes fun of female students unless they 100% agree with him.
Dr. Mather is a funny professor but if you don't do ALL the readings and understand ALL the slides of notes then you won't pass his exams. His exams are challenging and you need to make sure you study and come to class to pass. He posts notes after lectures, sometimes not even till a week before midterms so don't miss lectures.
So, Dr. Mather is a really knowledgable professor and obviously passionate about what he does. But for god's sake, he does not know the first thing about teaching an online course. He will just talk at the screen presenting a slideshow with nothing but pictures and no guiding ideas on the slide. Get ready to do 3hrs of notes for a 30min lecture.
Absolutely awful, be prepared to sit and be forced to pay attention to every word from a lazy professor stuck in Woodstock. Forcing students to listen to hour long recordings of lectures, where the slides are so absent of guiding information you have to pay attention to every painful word this man says that isn't "umm". Also totally ignores emails.
It's possible that Dr. Mather just really wasn't great at the transition to online school. His lecture slides have almost no information on them - just tangentially related Calvin and Hobbes strips. He just reads fast from a script for his lectures - no natural flow to his words... makes it hard to follow. An 18 minute lecture 1 hr of notes.
Dr. Mather was excellent, super passionate about Anth. But, be prepared to watch all content (lectures + movies). You have to put the effort in to do well in this class! I took notes and read textbook chapters and did well. I think online was a hard transition for him, but he did what he could and even gave out a few extra points on some exams.
Professor Mather made this class unnecessarily hard. It's supposed to be a fun, interesting 200-level course, yet the tests were pretty much impossible to do well on (questions on things that weren't part of the course, overly detailed questions). He assigns tons of long (50min) movies that you have to watch and take detailed notes on.
Enthusiastic, however, his lectures were wild. His speech is super hard to follow and his slides only have pictures making note taking painful. His tests are highly specific and sometimes feel like an iq test. You have to watch the documentaries, attend all the lectures, and read the textbook to pass. Two mid terms and a final. He makes you WORK.
Professor Mather is very good at what he does. That being said, he is not the greatest instructor. He doesnt care much for his students wellbeing. His tests are unnecessarily specific. And he barely gives you enough time to write them. Easily one of the worst marks Ive received and worst class Ive ever taken.
I was taking this class during the web-based learning year and wow... REALLY tests on the smallest things in the textbook. Spells things wrong on the test to confuse you and talks SUPER fast during lecture videos. Stay focused 247 or you will not pass. Every detail in lecture/videos/textbook he texts on.
Seems like a good person who is passionate about his field, but as a professor is lazy, careless, and disorganized. Tests are absurdly specific, riddled with spelling mistakes, and test your memorization abilities rather than your anthropological knowledge. That said, the subject itself is very interesting and rewarding, almost makes it worth it.
Ridiculous exam question, be prepared to eat the entire brick-thick textbook for exams. Test on ant size things from books and single words from his speech. An open-book exam with a 68 class average. Avoid him like people do not wear masks. GPA nuclear bomb.
Really funny guy but class was awfully hard. His lecture videos take double the time to get through because he talks so fast. You have to write everything down, it is all important and can all be on the exam. Hes amazing in class. But online was awful.
Dr. Mather is an amazing prof! He wants his students to succeed. He genuinely wants his students to do well! He is very funny! But to do well you have to do the readings! They are not that bad, quite interesting. He also explains what the readings are about. As long as you pay attention and take active notes you will do well!
Dr Mather is the best and I would die for him.
Dr. Mather is one of my favourite professors. The online lectures were difficult, as he talks quickly. However, this is well worth it because you can learn so much more! He is always willing to clear things up for you, and he was very understanding. Be prepared to work hard.
I genuinely enjoy coming to lectures as they are very informative and entertaining. He is very funny and always finds an interesting and captive way to present the material. The tests can be a little harder just make sure to read the articles and study the notes. One of my favorite classes and professor I have had at U of C!
I liked Professor Mather's lectures, but I found that it was hard to know what lecture material would be applicable to tests. Also, he assigns way too many readings in my opinion (3 or more per lecture) and tests on obscure parts of readings rather than general themes, and his MC questions were super dense. Wish I could say I liked the course :/
Awesome Prof!
The best prof and course I have ever taken. Difficult tests, but if you do the work, read, go to class and ask questions, you will learn so much! He is in incredible lecturer and has infinite space for questions, discussion and contradictory opinions. He is a true prof in that he teaches you to think and not just spew out info. Wish he taught more!
one of the worst classes I have taken. too many readings, and ridiculous expectations of you remembering every single useless detail. He does not post his lecture notes before or after class and says that you do not need to know everything but you do. Unfair tests and even more unfair grading from his TA. Would not recommend to anyone.
one of the worst profs I have ever had. Him and his TA had differing criteria for grading the test and seemed careless and stubborn when students wanted to discuss that with them. WORST CLASS EVER do not take it
ridiculous expectations of students, no lecture material provided, screams mid lecture, overall worst prof ever
too many readings, unfair tests, overall our class average has been beyond low, he also adds bonus marks without telling students to bring up overall average to appear as passing
HORRIBLE TEACHER
Class was interesting and I really enjoyed the lectures, unfortunately his tests were BAD. Class average % was in low 60s/high 50s, you would leave the exam feeling like you absolutely nailed it and receive a C grade in return. Grading criteria for short answer was impossible. Enjoyed the subject but ultimately had to withdraw to save my gpa.
Objectively the funniest professor I've had yet. The slides are *not* posted before or after class, so attending lectures is a must. The tests are on the harder side, but not unreasonable. Be prepared for a lot of reading(3-4 papers/lecture) and know them well. The content was super interesting, so that makes up for the tests for me.
The content was very interesting. I liked everything we learned about and the professor is nice and engaging, but overall trying to get a good grade in this class has been difficult. He doesn't post the lectures slides so you have to come to class and there are A LOT of readings that you HAVE to know. Tests are hard and the final is a nightmare.
Get ready to read,Tons of readings and they're long too (3 per lecture). Lectures are interesting but no slides are posted, making it hard to write everything down and listen at the same time. Tests are horrendous and oddly specific, will test on obscure parts of the readings. Study guides are useless as he only tests on maybe 2 concepts from them.
Dr. Mather is a very knowledgeable prof and the course is very interesting. However, I would not suggest taking this class. Slides are not posted and often brushed over very quickly in class, there are a lot of older, outdated readings from the 70s and 80s, grading criteria is not the same between TA and prof, and readings are not always posted.
BEWARE: ANTH 341 will affect you. It's NOT a learn-and-forget GPA booster. Everyone walks away angry or changed. Dr. Mather has the expertise and passion for cultivating inquisitive minds. Curiosity is not only encouraged, it's the driving force behind student transformations and successes. Want a good mark? Be bold. Do the work. Trust the process.
Be aware that ANTH341 is a fairly difficult course that requires a considerable amount of reading. That said, however, it was one of the most interesting courses I ever took (despite that I did only okay in it) and Dr. Mather is a fun and engaging professor who I enjoyed taking a class with. Would definitely recommend for future students.
ANTH341 is a challenging course, but Dr. Mather makes it engaging. Lots of reading, but the content is fascinating. Tests are tough, so use Unstuck study and stay on top of the material. Worth the effort for an eye-opening experience.
Had a great experience in this class. Dr. Mather is a very enthusiastic prof & knows a lot about what he teaches. He is open to discussions & answers questions well. He covers a lot in lecture, I recommend attending. Read the articles, the exams are based on them. Class is exam heavy, mc can be tricky but if you know content you'll be fine.
