As long as you do the study guide and memorize it, the tests are easy. He keeps class interesting and is very helpful. Easy class!
if you are looking for an easy diversity credit do not take this class. He is a new teacher and he made the class a lot harder than it used to be. The tests are hard for a theater class. TAKE THE ONLINE VERSION DO NOT TAKE THE CLASS
I took the online version and did not struggle at all. TAKE IT ONLINE. People who took it live had tons of problems. The class does require some time weekly to watch the lecture and take the quiz but if you do that you can ace the class!
Not too hard of a class but don't take this thinking it's going to be the easy A that it used to be. I got a B with minimal effort so an A is definitely attainable.
Dr. Mitchel is a new teacher to UF I did not know about this when I sign up for the class. It is not the easy A it use to be before. So do not take it thinking no effort needs to be put in because he does give different assignments and quizzes almost every Friday.
Dr. Mitchell is a new teacher to UF I did not know about this when I sign up for the class. It is not the easy A it use to be before. So do not take it thinking no effort needs to be put in because he does give different assignments and quizzes almost every Friday.
Many people took this class this year because they thought it would be an easy A, including myself. However, he is a new professor so it is entirely different than how it has been taught previous years. All of the assignments are easy, but the tests are somewhat difficult, make sure you complete all of your assignments and study for the tests.
Awesome teacher. I am taking this improv class again for fun. He knows his stuff and is always willing to help you improv. This is a great class to take if you are stressed! it allows you to be a kid again as well as deal with serious topics. He only criticizes you for improvement. Attendance is a must, and you have to participate.
I took this class online, and while not hard, it was very time consuming. It's all busy work, but just read the chapters and watch the lectures. Grades consist of quizzes, discussions, 3 play analysis's, and a project. He also offers a LOT of extra credit via seeing extra performances. His TAs grade SO SLOWLY though, and don't explain grades.
Class was ok, the book didn't help much, however the test were ok if you studied. In the end I got an A in the class and everyone who didn't well its cause they didn't try.
easy class. If you dont want to go to lectures than make a friend & get the notes. its really not hard. HE TELLS YOU EVERYTHING that will be on the test. There are no surprises, study for like 30 min before & your set. No homework, you have to attend 3 plays, and a few projects. SO EASY. great prof. He's full of himself, but you'll get a laugh.
I took this class thinking it'd be an easy A and ended up with a B+. Definitely don't take it if you don't want to put a lot of time into it becaue I went to every class, read every play, and got high A's on everything but the tests and quizzes. I studied for every test and thought I knew the material even while taking the test and got Bs. Not easy
Took this class online. Really easy, but it's basically all busy work. Do the weekly quizzes with friends in the class with you and keep up with the discussion boards, because that's the majority of your grade. Some of the plays we had to see were awful, but at least the class was an easy A.
he's entertaining to listen to in lecture. class is more work than previous years but still easy.
Lectures are kind of funny. Can be boring at times. You have to take notes because the stuff he presents is exactly what's in the tests, but he posts the powerpoints online. If you study for a couple hours beforehand, you will ace the test. The one thing I hated was the quizzes on the plays you read. They were way too specific! Ended up with an A-.
Professor Mitchell is a great teacher, interesting to listen to, and articulate. Even if you're not interested in theatre, you should take this class because the passion that this guy has will make you more motivated to learn about theatre and enjoy it. It was not too hard of a class and the smaller discussion group classes were stimulating and fun
Great professor! Stimulating lectures! He is very passionate about theater; it resonates through the classroom. His lectures make you interested in theater. Easy class for at least a B+. I went to most lectures, but didn't read any of the books and got a B+
This guy is awesome! When he teaches it's like standup comedy with the education thrown in there! I'm gonna miss coming to class to see this guy, he turned me into a theatre minor. He's really passionate about what he teaches and is a visionary. I highly recommend this course
He's awesome! His passion for the subject is obvious, and his lectures are always entertaining, intersting, and informative. No textbook which is a plus! It definitely helps to go to class, but getting an A isn't hard at all.
Took this online. he's very helpful. and from what i hear, if you're going to take theatre appreciation, take it online, it's so much easier. there was a quiz and discussion every week, which weren't bad if you had a textbook and read through it before you took the quiz. you have to write 3 papers on plays you're required to attend.
I loved this class. Dr. Mitchell always has really high energy and funny ancedotes. Lectures are really fun and interesting.
Really fun guy who really knows his stuff. His class isn't very demanding, and though it's not hard, you are gonna have to put a little effort. Exams are simple enough, take decent notes and all the answers are there, if not directly from his slides. He makes lectures really fun and has a bunch of funny stories. Take Robert as your TA if you can!
Dr. Mitchell is awesome. I have never laughed so much in my life as during this class. Pretty much the only work is reading 1 really short play a week
Took this online. The instructor (Mitchell) was fine but whoever graded my stuff graded way too strict. I took this class for the diversity credit and don't think my work shouldve been graded as if I were a theater major. I have higher priorities but still put a lot more effort in to this class than I thought I was going to have to. Got a b-,BEWARE
Dr. Mitchell is a really cool guy. He always has great stories to tell and entertaining lectures, because prior to teaching he was a practicing actor in NYC. I got a B+ because his exams can be tricky if you don't listen very closely in lecture.
Although I took the class online, I interacted with Dr. Mitchell via email a few times and he was very accommodating. The class is very easy as long as you do all the readings and watch all the lectures. I would definitely recommend it online or live!
A lot busy work is involved with this course. Really easy as long as you keep up with stuff. If you take the online version (recommended), you will definitely need the book for the weekly quizzes.
Take the class in person because he tells many little stories when he gets distracted which are interesting. He really loves the subject. Pay attention and take notes and it should be an easy and interesting class. The readings are not that intense and the exams are not hard if you study the notes. One of my favorite all time classes.
Good teacher but he's kinda mean
HES AWESOME. go to class, PARTICIPATE IN DISCUSSION, & READ THE PLAYS! i got an A- due to my failure to read the plays/participate in class. hes straightforward, no surprises on the exams, and very enthusiastic which made the class enjoyable. dont use your phone, he WILL kick you out. highly recommend this class, easy, interesting gen-ed.
Took the online version of Theater Appreciation and it was very easy. Make sure to keep up with the modules as there are deadlines. But Mr. Mitchell was very helpful with any questions there were. He even gave us an EC opportunity which helped to get my grade from an A- to an A!
More the TA's than the Prof but the class overall has more work than it should
The test are easy but the quizzes after a play hurts my grade. The questions on the quizzes are very specific but the questions on the test are straight from the notes or book.
Dr. Mitchell was a great professor. He thoroughly explains the information you need to know for his tests while keeping the information simple enough to understand. It is important to note that some problems on tests do depend on you reading the textbook. Quizzes are generally straightforward and the critiques (3) are not bad. He's willing to help.
Dr. Mitchell is an amazing professor. He is entertaining and engaging, and he really does treat his students like adults, which I appreciated. I was apprehensive about taking a theatre class, but THE2000 turned out to be my favorite class this semester. I highly recommend this class and Dr. Mitchell!
as an online class, it was really chill. at most, you had to work a total of 3 hours per week. the papers on the plays are 2 pages long double spaced. you just have to keep up with the work on your own but its an easy A
Not really pop quizzes, but instead of exams he gives a 20 question quiz and you must complete a discussion, both each week. Textbook is essential, but is online. Be prepared to read a lot in the textbook and the plays he assigns, as well as sometimes extra articles or watching extra videos. Overall is pretty easy.
As long as you pay attention in lecture, it's an easy grade. There will be a lot of plays to read with quizzes, but as long as you read you should be good. He makes lectures interesting and funny so there's no need to worry about falling asleep. Overall, my favorite professor thus far. Only reason I got an A- is because I didn't read carefully.
An easy class with easy materials! Make sure you do the test reviews he gives and read the weekly plays, they don't take more than an hour to read if you focus!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Notes do not match his exams so going to class is virtually pointless (except for attendance cause that is part of your grade). The exams are the only factors that change your grade and they are rather difficult. For a basic intro class, it is so much work and harder than it needs to be. Take a diff class for diverse credit
One of the easiest classes I've ever taken, it actually did make me "appreciate theatre." You're required to see 3 plays, all of which I thought were really enjoyable. You also have to read about one play a week, but they're all very short, and really easy to get through (they're all modern, no Shakespeare bs, and a lot of them are hilarious).
The subject matter is not hard, but the exams are a little harder than expected. You will not pass the quizzes if you don't read the plays
Too hard for a humanities gen ed class. Heard it was an easy A online but in class it is tough unless you already have a love for and understanding of theatre. Also he loves to push the liberal agenda and PC culture which rubs me and other students the wrong way. His lectures are fairly interesting though.
The online class is simple & straightforward with 3 easy essays. Free textbook. Interesting material. Mitchell is very open to help students, even in real life, and all required performances were interesting. Nice overall, but I sometimes felt like he disliked my creative approaches to assignments. Do what's asked, and you'll get your A.
Absolutely LOVED this class! Dr. Mitchell's lectures are interesting, hilarious, and provide a whole new insight into the world of theatre. There is one quiz (almost) every week on a play you've read (you HAVE to actually read them to do well) and exams are easy if you pay attention in class. Free PDF of textbook online. Would take again!!!
Don't take this class in person if you're looking for an easy A. Its so much unnecessary work. He's strict about weird things (example: you can only take paper notes in lecture). A lot of his exam questions are about random stuff that he mentions in class for 2 seconds, and you have to read a play every single week for quizzes.
Idk why other people are saying this class is easy. DO NOT TAKE IT, way too much work for a gen ed.
Lectures take attendance. He has a strict to cell phones or laptop rule, so be ready to listen. He likes to talk a lot, and wants everyone's attention. Good thing is most the time the lectures are enjoyable, he is super passionate and experienced. The test are right from him slides from lecture or textbook, but don't buy it, just use the free PDF.
He tells you exactly what's on the exams. Super Easy
Great class, very interesting! Lots of weekly reading but honestly best choice for gen ed humanities credit. Excellent teaching style and very funny! Exams are easy and he gives very specific study guides. You watch three plays for class and write short essays but overall easy and fun
Really cool guy that is passionate about theatre. Took the class online, but I enjoyed the lectures that he had recorded previously. The class is really interesting and it was a nice change of pace to go to plays and read different plays. As long as you complete the assignments you'll get an A.
One of my favorite classes at UF. It made me fall in love with theater. He was so funny and chill, and the assignments were fun. I really enjoyed going to the plays and analyzing them. Take it!!!
I thought this class was super fun!
This is a really fun class to take to fill in gen ed requirements or to get into theatre. You will read about one play a week and take a 10 question fill in the blank quiz on discussion periods. There are 3 major tests, but Dr. Mitchell gives you a study guide, and you can control search the key terms in the free pdf version of the text book.
Took this class to fulfill my gen eds but it's way too much work. If you're looking for an easy A, I would not take this class. There are 10 plays you need to read and you have quizzes on them every week. The questions are VERY specific and are all free response and he looks for specific answers. His review guide for the exams are also not clear.
Fun class/lectures, lots of work though, reading the plays was fine and the quizzes were VERY specific but overall okay, papers on the plays were harder but doable, depends A LOT on your TA for grading, exams were easy if you memorized the material from the study guides, not an easy A but it's not hard if you're willing to put in some work
I would really recommend avoiding this class at all costs. It is a lot of work and the questions on the exam are super tricky and specific. Dr. Mitchell's lectures are also really boring and fast so try and only take the online section IF u have to so you can take your time taking good notes.
I really enjoyed Dr. Mitchell. He is such a cool guy and awesome professor. His lectures are very entertaining; just don't skip because lectures are not online. There is a lot of reading for plays and from the textbook, and a few papers, but nothing terribly demanding. Just be sure to read the textbook for the exams, and you will be fine.
Charlie Mitchell was a good professor. His lectures are interesting (even for a class that I didn't care about). He generally is really funny, and knows how to connect to a younger crowd. However, his exams are not easy, and you need to study for them. You will take quizzes every week on plays you read. Also essay heavy. Overall fun class & prof.
1 Quiz and discussion post a week. Lectures and textbook are free online. Don't need to read the plays, just skim and research online. See 3 productions and write 2 page papers on each. Final project is to explain how you would direct or design a play. If you're off-campus you're responsible for attending (and paying for) local shows.
While I think this class is a bit difficult for a gen ed, Dr. Mitchell is a great lecturer with interesting stories and anecdotes. That being said, the exams often contain a small detail he mentioned once in lecture, so be prepared to listen. All exams are multiple choice and you have to see three productions throughout the semester.
He makes his lecturers fun but definitely a lot of reading. A play each week. The exams are pretty easy and he gives a topic list for you to know what to expect on the exam. You are required to write three papers and those are extremely annoying but due-able. Those grades are really based off of your TA, Teague Parker is a really good one.
Charlie was really enthusiastic about theatre. He makes it interesting but some test questions come out of nowhere.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Mitchell is strict with classroom etiquette, attendance and readings, but if you can handle showing up to class and staying off your phone for fifty minutes you'll enjoy the living hell out of the lectures. The tests are exactly what he tells you they will be; all multiple choice, no surprise topics, and easy.
I really enjoyed Professor Mitchell. He was really cool and made his lectures more enjoyable by his sense of humor. The downside with him is that he does not accept any late work, you HAVE to take paper notes (not laptops allowed in class), and if he catches you with your phone-- you WILL be kicked out of class. Just go to class and you'll be fine.
Pretty easy class if you like theatre. Grade is based on weekly online quizzes (sometimes found on quizlet/coursehero) and short discussion posts, three papers, and a creative project. Depends on your TA, but mine was a very lenient grader. If you don't know anything about theatre, I wouldn't recommend this class (I did it in HS so wasnt bad).
Professor Mitchell rocks! He knows what hes talking about and is obviously passionate. This class was super fun! Take notes in class, read the plays, make a quizlet for the exams, and youre good! Such a refreshing class because I loved theatre growing up. Also depends on your TA so I hope you get lucky!
Charles is so funny, his lectures are never boring. No electronics allowed (this kid got kicked out for that). Required to read a play almost every week and quizzed on it. Papers are ok, kind of annoying (busy work) but your grade depends on your TA. The exams are easy if you study (Quizlet has everything). DO THE EXTRA CREDIT AND ATTEND CLASS
we were required to see 3 plays and write papers on them. one of the plays was sold out with over five days left (over 100 students and I didnt get to see it). he did not care at all; had us see and pay for another play+took a whole letter grade off of our papers. my grandfather died, I have to miss a test to go home, emailed him and got no response
Dr. Mitchell was by far the best professor I've ever had! He's hilarious, makes the lectures entertaining, and connects with the students. There is definitely reading, but the plays he gives are only 50-100 pages long, super easy. Just go to class & write the notes and you'll get an A. His exams are specific, but he gives a study guide for them.
Dr. Mitchell is one of the most engaging professors I have ever had. He routinely tells humorous stories that keep the class engaged. Tests are very easy to pass because of the study guides he gives out beforehand. Definitely recommend THE 2000, but expect to spend around $100 (if not more) between course fees and textbooks.
Easy class, but he is one of those professors that think their class is really important even though no one wants to be there. So he gives a lot of busywork. He is also very sarcastic, which got pretty annoying. He doesn't allow technology in class, he kicked a student out for being on their phone, which was pretty dumb and a little childish.
Great professor, engaging lectures, and fun assignments. Definitely take this course to get that diversity credit out of the way while having a good time. You will be entertained in class and the plays he has us read are extremely well-picked and very easy. If you put even the slightest effort into this class you will get a good grade.
You have to see 3 plays, do some easy assignments, and a few exams that are really easy if you study. The lectures are actually pretty interesting and engaging. The breakout sessions with a TA are also pretty fun. You do have to read all of the plays but they're easy reads & pretty enjoyable. Great way to meet people if you're a freshman!
This class is super easy, a good way to get that humanities cred out of the way. You have to see 3 plays and read a bunch of really short plays, but they are all pretty interesting and take less than an hour to read. He gives a "topic list" for each exam that lays out exactly what will be on the exam, so it is so easy to study and do well.
Easiest class of my life
Great class, great professor! Definitely take this course if you need a humanities credit.
There was so little work for this class I forgot I was taking it. I have literally never talked to this man and I think he recorded a total of 4 lectures? Not very involved, very TA-driven course. If you have a good TA, you have to work harder to fail than to get an A. Best class to take for the humanities credit.
Vast majority of the class was run through the TA. Dr. Mitchell seemed pretty cool and was always accessible by email. If you hate reading plays, the class could me a little annoying, but having a chill TA makes all the difference in your grade.
This class was not bad at all. There were weekly discussion board posts and quizzes that took me no more than an hour to do. You don't really even need to buy or read any of the plays. There were 2 papers that were 2 pages long and the TA graded very leniently. Super easy class in my opinion and I'm not that into theatre.
Mitchell is great. Attendance is mandatory for a participation grade but the class is super engaging so it's not too bad. There is no zoom option unfortunately so if you miss you have to get notes from someone else. Very engaging professor and makes class fun and interesting. Talks about a lot of controversial topics in class.
Whatever you do don't take this class. Not the theatre class you are expecting. Not an easy A by any means.
Thought this was going to be an easy A but nope. The tests and quizzes are extremely difficult if you are not into theatre. The questions on the test are meant to trick you. Does not go over the material that is going to be on the test in his lectures. Gives a topics guide to study but does not go over how in depth you have to study each term.
I took Charlie for Playwriting and Advanced Improv. He's fantastic. He's incredibly supportive and teaches with respect for his students. Participation is required, but he makes it as comfortable as possible. He's always happy to be a sounding board for thoughts and ideas--relevant or not. I truly had the best time in his class.
takes himself way too seriously
he is so funny and the tests are pretty easy. lectures are mandatory and if you miss like three you'll get a bad grade in attendance. homework is easy too and the TAs are super chill. midterms are multiple choice which was nice. as long as you were at lectures youd know whats on the test.
He's clearly passionate about theatre and the lectures are quite interesting. There's a play you have to read every week for a quiz but they're 1-2 hours and they're fairly easy as long as you read the play. You don't need to read the textbook at all as he tells you exactly what will be on the exams so you can just study everything beforehand.
