Overall a pretty cool professor. Passionate about his subject and his students.
Amazing teacher. I hope that during my college career I have as many professors, like Chaz, as possible !!!
OMG! i love chaz he was awesome all you do is listen debate, 4 quizs 1 mideterm one final and write a gnarly paper on determinism but..best class ever chaz is awesome bring him a piece of pizza and he will <3 you forevr watch the matrix and the cube and when you write your paper write it on determinism not the liberalist side.trust me love u chaz!
The worst and most boring class ever!!! Cool teacher though, always talks about dropping acid and morphine drips...
Great class but it is easy to loose your focus in the middle of the lectures. He is very into what he teaches makes the class as fun as possible. Just pay atention in class and do some light reading and you will pass with a good grade. Also invest in a case of red bull or two.
Very funny teacher. My favorite class I took this semester! Passionate about the subject, and also influenced me to actually like studying for this class. I read the text because I wanted to, not because I had to - which probably helped me to get my A. He is a wonderful teacher and I learned a lot.
. go 2 lecture, make sure u understand wat he says in class, then it's an very very easy A.i learn a lot fr him. take him and you'll love him :}.
I really enjoyed this class. He's very smart and very entertaining. Attendance is mandatory. You should take his class for a good experience! =)
Hands down, one of the best teachers I have had the pleasure to learn from! Even after a crushing personal loss he still managed to excel at his job. Very easy to talk to and he always has the best stories. Ask him about the wall made of playing cards!
Chaz is an interesting character. I took an eight week class with him spring '08 and am planning on taking another class with him. He has a really diverse background and has experienced allot in life. I HIGHLY recommend taking one of his classes. He is entertaining and a hidden gem for Orange Coast College the school is lucky to have him.
Loved him. Such a cool guy, take him
i love chaz he's great! you have to come to class to learn but the quizzes and tests are exactly what he teaches, he really makes you think! if you email him with questions he'll help you out a lot with homework and anything else! love himmm!
If you know nothing about Philosophy take this class with Chaz. He is really helpful and challenges you in class with in depth discussions that make you think about EVERYTHING. He made our class question our very existence! He is a great guy and if you take notes it is a breeeeeeeeeeze. Chaz is the man for sureeeee.
Charismatic teacher, easy subject, dont really have to read the book, but its recommended that you study the quizzes and attend class. extra credit will come
Such a character! Totally a hippie back in the 60's- exactly what you would expect a philosophy professor to be. Knows SO much about the subject and discussions are always fun. He's super open to other people's ideas and is a very fair grader. Do the work and you will get an A. I totally recommend him!
he was totally chill and laid back and i really enjoyed our class discussions, they were really interesting and overall the class wasn't that difficult. If you're going to take phil 100, you should deffinitely take chaz!
Need book for assignments. Not hard to get A, but dont slack off. If you're naturally smart and/or put in effort into hw, you will get an A. Show up to class!!! He explains it better than the book. Funny guy, very helpful, not the easiest subject for some students because class itself requires a lot of thinking. Got an A :)
Awesome teacher, come to class take the notes and don't slack off. If you pay attention in class you should do fine. Quizzes and tests are based off discussions. He won't put anything on them that he hasn't gone over, fair grader, interesting teacher, interesting class, Highly recommend him for Philosophy 100.
Took him for both Phil 100 and 150. 100 was easy and 150 was a bit harder but not much. He has a bunch of quizzes but will drop 2 lowest scores. REALLY nice and cool guy. U wont get bored with Chas
A very interesting character... unique guy. Very nice. Listen to his lectures, don't get too caught up in the book, because his tests are based on what he teaches, since the book gets really confusing.
very funny and great teacher. show up to class and take notes and you'll do fine. all quizzes are never more then 10 questions. smoke a blunt.
Chaz is um...Chaz. Kinda ridiculous how many times this guy said blunt. One time, funny, 300, not so much. He just went on and on about one topic for 4 hours. I fell asleep EVERY SINGLE CLASS. Quizzes were hard if you slept the whole class, but they helped for the finals. I feel hes just a old stoner that likes to over analyze things WASTE OF TIME
Chaz is soooo funny! This is the one class I actually looked forward to coming too. There are about 7 quizzes but he drops the lowest one and the quiz questions are on the midterm and final. There are no surprises and everything on the quizzes/tests we have discussed in class. Loved Him!
Chas is one of my favorite professors. Great person and he really knows what he's talking about. Everything is based on lectures so take good notes.
loves using the word blunt excessively. Pretty much gives a quiz every single meeting, very very very boring. Thinks his jokes are funny but most of them are lame. Do alot of lame group "games".. hes alright & a nice guy but didn't really teach the subject well enough.
Chas is an awesome teacher and is completely hilarious. He know his stuff and breaks it down well to understand. Somebody that says he is boring just doesn't have the discipline to listen to Philosophy lecture. Quizzes are based on discussion and reading and are fairly simple if you pay attention.
Chill class. Boring lectures sometimes. Pay attention & ask qs b/c the theories get confusing as the semester goes on. Easy quizzes based on lecture and drops your lowest score. GO TO CLASS! He gives random pts to ppl who attend when so many students are missing. I got A/Bs for midterm & quizzes and he just gave me the A because I attended class.
Chill class and it's pretty easy. He makes corny jokes..the same ones all semester..kind of annoying but whatevs. Didn't read at all and aced every quiz. Do the study guide for tests and you're good! Easy A!
He claims that he doesn't like his job. What engraved my mind in this class the most was his repetitive words "this crappy, poor class" He is honest but seems don't have no consideration to alians.Easy if you attend the class and do study guide.
Lectures about different subjects are just boring but he does try to make it easier to understand. There are quizzes and two papers but they are manageable. Good teacher overall.
Took 150 with him and its a very easy class if you have some common sense. Some people do struggle but ehh not so hard just do the homework and that should get you ready for the quiz. Class is long and gets boring especially if its in the morning. Other than that pretty easy class
I don't think I'd understand philosophy if I didn't have Chas. He's the best!
Chaz is awesome, just pay attention and don't be on your phone (that's his pet peeve). He keeps the class entertaining and he is funny.
Don't buy the book. Take good notes/study his notes/test aren't hard as they first seem. His blunt and godzilla jokes get old quick, but it's an easy B/put in a little effort for that A.
Chas is a great teacher; however you will not get an easy A in this class. You have to work for your A. 2 Papers. 5 out of 7+ highest quizzes will be counted as part of your grade. 1 Midterm/1 Final. Multiple Choice Don't need the text. Study guides are around the place. Lectures are sometimes confusing. If you want a Easy B (Not A) Take this Class
Remember the why-how-what-who questions we learned in elm school? Chaz implements this with phils, he really makes you think. His absurd jokes are for you to pay attention. Don't miss class, b/c phils takes a little more brain power than you'd think. Read the book when you need clarity not found in lecture!!! This is, if you want an A.
The teacher is what you could call a classic example of a philosophy teacher. The class will make you think and your head will hurt but you will learn a lot. You need to attend every class to get a good grade. He likes participation and the extra credit is all in class. This class is hard work and makes you think outside of the box.
If you miss even one assignment you're pretty much screwed. You have to study hard for quizzes and even harder for exams. He doesn't curve grades, ever. Participation is based on if you answer a question CORRECTLY (not on effort or attendance) His sense of humor gets very old and slightly annoying. Taking this class again WITH SOMEONE ELSE!
Great teacher. Clearly very knowledgeable in philosophy and cares a lot about his student. He'll always explain concepts to you even in his spare time. Highly recommend.
Must take. Best teacher at OCC. Easy A class
He loves to crack an occasional joke, to ease the tensions in class. He's also great with speaking with his students, like you can feel like you can relate to him. He's also perfectly firm in his lectures and assignments, without being too strict or mean. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better professor.
Great guy. Always willing to discuss philosophy even outside of class. Very helpful. Highly recommended.
We're not even in the third week but I was intrigued to already write something about Chaz. He's AWESOME. Makes an effort to get to know his students. Draws crazy cartoons on the board - Definitley looking forward to his semester with him, I know he'll help me out with the paper. :)
Honestly one of the best teachers I've taken, I only struggled with a few things but he made sure I got if I asked for the help. Papers are easy if you pay attention, use the study guides he gives you. Basically the class is straight forward, show up, pay attention, ask questions and do the work he gives you since its not a lot.
Definitely take this professor if you can. I feel like I've learned more from him than from anybody else in my life.
I loved his class. Learned a lot and was challenge but it was still very easy to pass. He gives you a lot of chances to get perfect on your quizzes and also has a "if you completed the homework with C or better you get 100% on homework" rule. Highly recommend
A mazing professor, hilarious! The first weeks i had a hard time with the class but you'll learn to adapt if you actually try. Its philosophy so its not an easy A. There are 2 or 3 papers go to his office hours before turning it in so he can give you feedback before. There is a 10pt quiz on every chapter but they will be great help for the exams!
Chas is a nice teacher, and very passionate about philosophy, but it's kinda easy to get confused and it's a lot of info to remember
This class was TOUGH. Definitely passable if you study hard. Homework is assigned but not collected. 4 test total including final which is worth a double test. No extra credit, no additional points. The tests get harder and harder. If you do not do the homework, you will not pass. His lectures are entertaining. I would take him again.
Really good professor. We are in college to get an education so obviously you have to put in the work, and Chaz really does not ask for that much work. You have to be lazy, not have a great understanding of english, or an idiot to fail. Hes hilarious as well. Highly recommend! Intelligent, honest, humble instructor!
Chaz is laid back and has a great understanding of philosophy. His ancient philosophy class was perfectly tailored to my interests and he did a great job making me think deeper and discuss in class. He's an easy grader and seems to care more that you try at philosophy honestly and take it seriously.
Chaz is a really nice guy and really funny. My disdain for the class comes from the material itself. I don't find philosophy particularly interesting, but he made it as good as it can be, I suppose. Weekly practice quizzes, 3 exams, 3 papers, 1 final. Never once opened the textbook.
Took ethics during summer and only read the book to write the midterm and final take-home papers. An easy B if you do the bare minimum, but you'll have to try harder for an A. After a student answers a ? he will engage in a one-on-one convo with said student so that the whole class can learn from the discussion. Not fond of the teaching style.
He has a laid back teaching style. I took barely any notes, only reviewed his practice quizzes, and aced all the tests. You really just need to pay attention, so make sure you're legitimately interested in philosophy and it'll be easy. He breaks down a lot of concepts that are hard to understand in their original form, so don't miss his lectures.
He is definitely out there a bit but I loved hearing some of the crazy things he would say, Philosophy is definitely a subject some will find easier than others, don't overthink things. I personally had a really hard time understanding concepts and while he was a funny guy it didn't really benefit me in the long run. I wouldn't take him again.
Chas's class was awesome! you have 4 in class exams, and 4 take home exams which are short written essays, they make up your whole grade. No homework. there are in class quiz's that aren't graded but help you study for the exams. He got carried away during his lectures sometimes so doing your readings from the text outside class is a must.
Unfortunately I was forced to drop this class because of my work schedule. But I did enjoy it a lot. Professor is funny, knowledgeable and very respectful. I loved his class, and was very upset about being unable to attend it anymore. I would definitely recommend him, if you need to take philosophy. Take one of his classes! He is a great professor!
Chas is a friendly dude who is lively and energetic in class with a humorous tone. His class requires you to put in effort. If you are the kind of person whos passionate about philosophy, his classes will give you some good challenges that will make you think. As is the case for me so chas is one of my favorite professors.
Very funny. Makes you think and gives you different perspectives that you wouldn't have thought about before
Hes an awesome professor and it is an easy A class! His lecture is clear and easy to understand. If you show up and do the practice quiz before each exam, you will get A.
Prof Otwell is a pretty stereotypical philosophy/humanities type professor. Rambles along to a lecture, occasionally says something mildly inappropriate, and gives easy tests. There's an in class writing assignment with each unit, but they're nothing crazy and he pretty thoroughly covers the material in class. Only grades the papers and the tests.
If you asked me what this class was even about I wouldn't be able to tell you and I only missed one lecture. Tests are just reworded quizzes. Gave extra credit points if you showed up to class on a handful of days.
Definitely the easiest class I've taken at OCC and possibly in my entire life. Kind of a random class with no clear curriculum but it was interesting nonetheless. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does randomly give extra credit points for attendance some days. No homework, 3 tests which are exactly like practice problems and 3 in class writings.
Great guy! Entertaining, knowledgeable, and talented on the piano! Very easy class, show up, study the practice quizzes and you will get a good grade.
At least make the class fair. Symbolic logic is one of my favorite subjects ive studied, but this class is frustrating. The professor is bullied by a few students - half of the students in the class have the test. Overall the professor is smart and knows his stuff.
Very hard class. He gives you study guides if you ask for them but never gave anyone the test like what another review said. If you do the readings and practice problems for homework, you will pass. Definitely a class that you need to show up to or else you will miss out on study guides and how to do problems.
I took professor Orwell's class last summer and I really enjoyed his lecture. He gives good feedback to students. I transferred to uni after the summer, I wish I could take his class again.
I liked Professor Otwell the first two weeks of class because he seemed to be a little more interested in his own lectures. However, nearing the end of the semester now, I dread going to his class. He makes no effort to make it interesting whatsoever. It's hard to sit in this class. Also, he made a racist comment in lecture the other day. Beware.
He doesn't really try in his class. He is terrible about grades and you will never fully know your grade. He talks a lot about being a hippie. I dread going to class because it's so boring
He has readings but if you pay attention in class you don't need to read them. He has 4 tests each have a take home and in class portion. You don't need to be a good writer just need to write the answer for the take home. Multiple choice has questions from practice quizzes. Chill and easy to listen to. Fell asleep in class once he laughed it off.
Great professor! He is super helpful and caring. Classes are all discussions, he makes them interesting. Very funny and engaging, practice quizzes prepare you for tests very well. Show up to class, he explains all readings and will answer all of your questions, which you will have! 3 tests all with a take home writing portion.
Took him for Fall 2020 for Intro to Philosophy. Make sure you read the assigned readings; What I mean is that you have to understand it in your own simple words by googling each Philosopher, attending office hours for questions to clarify the concept. I read the textbook for a few hours a week. Overall he is a great professor.
As a philosophy major, I would say Dr. Otwell has been one of my best professors. He teaches Logic very through and clear (which says a lot in itself) but I have him for other classes and he knows philosophy well. He will set you up for success if your planning to transfer.I only wish campus was open so I can attend more lectures. Fascinating dude!
Cool Professor, easy A for sure if you do the work. He has quizzes weekly with discussion boards and notes but just keep up at the deadlines and youll be fine. Constantly check though because the stuff is due weekly. With the virus and working, this class was great and easy to stay up on. He responds fast to emails too and is nice. Take him
Class materials are quite challenging when it comes to symbolic logic. But he set his quizzes and exams with unlimited time and book allowed so they are doable. Sticks with the textbook to learn this class. He omits 5 lowest quizzes and practices via discussions are free points so remember to do them by the due dates.
He finds ways to make online classes interesting and funny. Its pretty much just discussions, quizzes, and a few tests. He talks about really interesting topics in simple ways and is a pretty chill grader. I recommend taking his classes
he's the best! he really makes the lectures exciting and engaging. you can tell he knows what hes talking about and that he really cares. hes great to work with and so helpful if you need it. i would recommend him to everyone! :)
Since it was online I never really interacted with him but he seems like a great guy. Everything is in really clear modules and is pretty simple. As long as you do the discussions and take notes you'll pass.
Professor Otwell's class was easy since it was a hybrid class, but he doesn't mark you off if you don't show up to class. The quizzes are easy and are based on things he writes about the topic. He's really funny and chill about grades. There are 2 reflection papers, that are easily graded, 1 final, and then the weekly quizzes.
He is very nice! He has a group project and presentation then you will get 20. The quiz is gonna be easy all are in the reading.
Prof Otwell made it easy to learn symbolic logic! Do all the homework problems: tests comprise of homework problems, but there are a lot so make sure you do homework. No extra credit, only graded on tests and quizzes. If you ask questions in class and do all the homework problems, you'll get an A. Its a hard subject, but Prof Otwell makes it fun!
took his online asynchronous HUM100 and it was SO easy. just one quiz per week and a discussion usually biweekly with two 2 page papers in the beginning and middle of the semester, then the final is a 25 question multiple choice test. a lot of reading but imma be real almost all of the quiz answers are in quizlet lol
His HUM100 class has been such a breath of fresh air, its literally only discussions, (which he does expect you to really expand on for full credit) a quiz about every week or so, and a couple of writing assignments. It's very at your own pace, with not very many deadlines. I would definitely take a class of his again.
The quizzes were all easy but when turning in the reflection papers at the end of each section, he graded extremely harsh. I was docked 5 points on a 25 point paper because I had a single autocorrect mistake in two pages total and he thought it would have been better for me to switch two sentences around. It dropped my grade from an A to a B.
Pretty decent class and alot of videos. His modules and quizzes are easy if you read. Make sure to participate! He's chill but when it comes to reflections/essays... he is actually a tough grader. I didn't expect it at all. Just pay close attention to how he words things and you'll pass.
Amazing teacher, very funny and interactive with his lectures. I was looking forward to his classes, Just take notes, do your quizzes and reflections -- easy pass.
He posted small quizzes a lot and I would forget about them so it brought my grade down a lot. Generally, Ethics was hard for me to understand, and required lots of participation and creative thinking; it was overwhelming. but I don't blame his teaching style or him, I'd just say that this class is only comprehensible for a certain type of student.
If you participate and keep up with the submissions, an A can be obtained. He tries to make it interesting, but philosophy and ethics are all about the shades of gray, which I didn't love. Too much fussing and splitting hairs over concepts. Reflections need to be well written, so use the spell and grammar tools available.
I loved Professor Otwell and this was my favorite class last semester. He said in the beginning that this course will be difficult, but I didn't think so. However, I attended every single class and I think that really helped with my understanding & his lectures are wonderful. He drops you if you miss two classes consecutively and not let him know.
There's not alot of assignments but he grades so meticulously. He'll sit there nd reply to everyone in the discussion post & counter their opinions. I understand it's to engage us with the online class but he always has something to argue with students. if you spell something wrong it's like 5 pts off ur grade lol.a very picky grader it's annoying
don't take his humanities class, he is sooooo picky with grading its actually crazy.. its honestly frustrating that he nit picks everything and its literally a 100 class lmao
Charles Otwell is a pretty interesting professor (interesting in a good way). Lectures are pretty simple and quizzes are not too bad, considering you have a good grasp of the material at hand. 220 can be deceptively easy if you are not good with logic and/or math. Do you like/understand logic? If you don't, do not take MATH/PHIL220.
This class was easy in my opinion, a lot of reading tho. It is just easy to forget what is due since it was online so I missed a few things near the end of the semester. Has one easy extra credit assignment that equals two quizzes. The hardest part were the reflections as I didn't know what he specifically wanted, but I received reasonable scores.
As a non-philosphy major this class was hard for me. I attended every lecture and did the homework but it was difficult for me to grasp. He def helps if you REACH OUT! If you like/ are good at math and logic you will enjoy, if not take intro to logic first! Very nice and funny but be present and active if you want to succeed!
Super easy online class. Had discussion posts and short exams. There were 2 short 1 page analysis on what you learned, but was not graded harshly. Seems like a laid back dude. Would recommend for an easy class
Easy and short exams with discussion posts. Wasn't a hard class. Would recommend for an easy A/B
If you have a CS background/understand logic/arguments then this class isn't that bad. Hwk isn't collected but if you don't keep up , the exams are not passable. 3 exams, 2nd one is the hardest if you don't do the hw. Exams basically come from hw (end of the section usually) Quizzes check for understanding, we had an embedded tutor & he carried me
Doesnt give anyone a 100% on essays and very nit picky
Fun teacher, but he is about to retire after my semester, so he didnt really care about much, he just kept talking for 2 hours to no where, but funny.
Really funny professor who obviously cares about his students. While attendance is technically mandatory, he's pretty lenient. There's been a few times where he's told students that are obviously exhausted to just go home and rest. He's just super nice and the class is not hard by any means. Though I wouldn't say you can get by without studying
Dr.Otwell is an enigma. I quite enjoyed the lectures, but found it hard to truly learn much. However, I do think he's really funny. Pretty sure he's retiring tho lol. Extra credit is the extra quizzes (saved my ASS). He grades out of 200 points (180+ is an A) and there are a few extra quizzes that bring the total points possible to over 200.
