Worst teacher on the face of the plannet. His tests were incredibly hard. He allowed his TA's to feel some students answers. Took pleasure in totally screwing over his students, and basically should not ever teach a class. This guy is the devil!
Don't believe the other guy. Good prof. Very good lecturer. Allows notesheet. If you know the material, will do well on exams. Exams are noticeably harder than other profs though. But very doable.
worst professor. very mean person.
Tests are impossible!!!
likes to talk about his own research and then put it on tests.
Dr. Perrin is a walking encyclopedia. His exams are hard but that's a good thing--cuz the curve is always high. He gives reasonable tests and doesn't trick students who make stupid mistakes (unlike Tor..) Should take him!
This guy is the most arrogant chemist I have ever seen (and I've seen them all). He takes pride in making you feel like ****, especially in office hours. His exams are outrageous, too. Only take this schmuck if you're way into masochism.
His tests are very hard, but he grades on a pretty nice curve and allows note sheets, not the best professor, but certainly not the worst
avoid him if you can, he's lectures are fine, but his test are so hard and he EXPECTS u to get 50% - 60%. thats just rediculous
Below are comments of students that either failed or dropped out. The professor is great. His tests are difficult but if you do all the homework, you'll do well. After the exams he passes out a sheet, showing how all the problems were derived from the HW. At the end MANY people get A's and B's.
Best Ochem teacher ever. Midterms straight off the homework, don't study anything else. Tests are easy but graded rough. He is disturbingly funny and really cares for the students. Help sessions may or may not be useful depending on the dumb questions people ask. But goes quick over the hard stuff.
HARD. it's true that if you did the homework it's not that bad but if you have no discipline to keep up pace with the class, dont take him
His tests are hard if you don't do your homework so just do your homework and you'll be fine. The low average is actually working in your advantage if you work hard because it's easy to beat the standard deviation ie getting an A, and you can afford to make stupid mistakes.
Perrin had very straightforward lectures and he really cared if his students were learning. If you do all the assigned homework, you'll be fine. His tests had very low averages (50-60%) but don't sweat it; just do the HW and you're straight.
They misgraded my exam and he would not change the grade even though it was a clear adding up of the points mistake. Just to lazy to go change it with the admin. Good class though.
DONT EVER TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!!! and yes i did get a bad grade in this class, but i didnt fail... u can see that he tries hard to make his students understand, but when it comes to the exam... hes brutal!
Best prof ever... straight off of the homework. Don't ask stupid questions though, cause he'll answer them to the fullest, weather you need to know it or not.
The best... homework + homework = A
BEST professor of my whole college experience. I learned more in the three classes I had with him than in the rest of my education combined.
He is a good professor who really knows his stuff cold. His exams are a little difficult, if you didn't keep up with the homework, but had pretty good TA's. He breaks all concepts down very neatly. Sometimes though, I thought the TA, Hanson, did a better job teaching the material.
Superior. The exams can be rather difficult, but his knowledge in the subject matter is amazing, and his lectures are very organized, clear, and insightful. He always asks if there are any questions before proceeding. Because cheat sheets are allowed, his exams require in-depth understanding, and the problems can appear to be unlike the hw.
I know that everyone says that the homework is the key to this class, and they're telling the truth. True, the tests are still hard, because he tweaks the homework questions a little bit, but they are fair and manageable. Trust me, without the homework, you'll have no idea what the test questions are referring to.
He is a good teacher. His lectures are very organized and let you know what will be on exams. He allows one "reminder sheet" or as most call it "cheat sheet." Attend discussions to have a better understanding of material. Note: h.w. problems are the problems on exams and final just worded differently. Just do all the h.w. and you'll be fine.
(wow. perrin rides a cute bike to school) anyways. good professor. good curves. very clear lectures. i dislike most of my professors, and he's not one of them. yep yep. the end.
Perrin is one of my favorite professors. Fair, clear, concerned.
He's an overall great guy. good prof and all, but if I had a choice, I'd probably pick someone else. Hard exams, good curve but you better be on top cause that curve does kill some people.

Pretty terrible professor. Wants class average to be 50% makes you feel like a total idiot. Stutters and mumbles so hard to take notes. avoid him if possible!
I give Dr. Perrin an A+ a hundred times over. He was very clear, fair, and helpful. He made taking o-chem actually kind of pleasant. Like everyone else says, DO THE HOMEWORK, because some of the final question were homework questions, verbatim. I wish he taught 140B this year.
you don't even need to go to the lecture because just doing the homework will get you an A or a B in the class.
great professor! let's face it, ochem is not easy so don't think ANY prof is gonna be easy...so instead, choose a prof who'll teach you something. perrin has clear lectures and nice handouts. plus TAs can be very helpful and make handouts for you too. read, do hw (test probs sometimes are directly from hw), go to class, and PAY ATTENTION!
TERRIBLE PROFESSOR! He does feel good when the class average is low! I should have taken Yang like my friend did! AVOID HIM WHEN POSSIBLE unless you want to fail 140B and C!!!!
Professor Perrin is AWESOME! I definitely recommend taking him for 140A if you want a solid start for the Organic chem series. Go to class, take good notes, and do the homework. Lectures are clear and concise! Overall, A+ professor.
Great lecturer. He really makes the material understandable. His tests are hard because of the grading. He took of points for putting wrong answers. Otherwise, I learned a lot from him.
he's an amaaaazing professor! totally recommend him to anyone starting the o-chem series. he does give you a good foundation of what you need to know for 140b&c. his tests are known for being tough, so do the problems at least twice. his 2nd midterm was almost pure HW problems worded in different ways.
this class is not easy, i took it cause people on this website gave him a good rating.NOT TRUE!!!although he does speak clearly, his tests are really hard, u don' have enough time to finish. he'll mention something very briefly in lecture but them goes into detail in the exam. final was unrealistically hard and 55% of ur grade.
Perrin tried to offer help, but not enoughto justify his exams. He didn't go over much of the material clearly and I don't feel prepared for 140b/c, bc he simply would write things on the overhead w/o explaining, and then state that we were responsible for them on the exam. he also moved too slow in lecture,so we didnt cover as much as other classes.
Very clear. Tests are difficult, but very homework based, and I think much more fair than other Chem 140A professors. Moves slowly so you can understand. Very helpful in office hours
Clear lecturer but tests are still hard and time is can be an issue. A lot of homework problems are assigned and the material gets difficult by chapter 7. A lot of work is required. Final as 55% of your grade is a big stesser, but there is a cheat sheet. He is helpful. Answers questions in lecture and on the discussion board. Cute personality
Perrin is a great professor who truly cares about his students learning, and OH are very helpful. Homework doing is a must, and exams are pretty representative. The final exam however is unproportionally difficult. The curve is also lower than he claims it will be throughout the quarter. He looks like Einstein which is pretty cool though.
Good teacher for a not very interesting subject. OChem is a weeder course so I expected a bad teacher, but Perrin is pretty good. He was a good lecturer (pretty easy to take/follow notes) and tried to include some humor. His tests, however, were very hard. You will NOT do well unless you go to the sections. My TA was good and very helpful.
In lecture i could understand everything, no problem. the tests came and i seriously felt like i was in the wrong class. unreasonably hard. i would not take him unless you have no other choice.
Though his lectures are interesting and comprehensible, his tests leave much to be desired. It's #right - #wrong, so if you miss one question, you lose 2 points vice not getting credit for a wrong answer. Terrible. I'd suggest someone else if you hate ridiculous tests. But like I said, he's funny and interesting, that's as far as it goes.
NO. don't even.
WOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!! This class is like a roller coaster. You think the material is too easy one moment, the next moment, you're leaning your head against the wall, taking the midterm wondering how the **** you were supposed to remember how to draw acetone, when on your cheat sheet, you only have the word, "acetone".
*Unidentified Flying Object slams down into the school. Geisel shatters. Buildings crash and fly off. A giant wave of debris, trees, and concrete wipes out all existing resident halls into an apocalyptic oblivion.* "WTF WAS THAT?!!?!" That was the catastrophic impact known as Dr. Perrin's Final.
Very very good professor. If you do the HW, the tests aren't that hard. People who say so are stupid. His practice midterms/final are very similar to the real test. NEVER fall behind. He's also really funny. When he talks, he kind of flails around. Carrie is the best T.A. with awesome sunglasses.
He is a great teacher, but his tests are ridiculous. The chemistry is the easy part, it's trying to figure out what the hell he's asking for and what form he wants it in that is hard. You can get the right answer, but if it's not in the right form you don't get any points.
Homework is total key in this class. The only way you can do bad in this class is if you don't go to class or do the homework. Yeah, he has a guessing penalty but it's the expense at allowing a cheat sheet which is gold in Ochem. The final was the hardest part about this class but the curve turned out nice since alot of premed-wannabe's failed.
Good teacher, BUT IMPOSSIBLE EXAMS. Do yourself a favor, and if you want to get an A, or even a B..dont take him. His exams are take everyone by surprise, and the majority of kids end up dropping or stressin out WAYYY to much.
Great professor! Exams are fair, but careless mistakes will hurt you the most.
he is a great teacher...he is helpful, and if you do the work you'll get an A. all these people complaining are just bitter cause they didnt try hard enough. its an upper division chemistry class, you shouldve been prepared
He is the greatest Organic Chem teacher.
Perrin was awesome! Was an incredibly fair professor. Some of the questions on the midterms were derivations of questions from HW, and he labels his homework questions with +, -, ! for level of importance... so definitely do (!) HW numbers! I actually did BETTER on my final than midterms too because I put in the extra work. Highly recommend him.
Prof. Perrin is great and cares about his students a lot. All his exams are reflective of what is taught in class and in the textbook, but more difficult. He gives you a list of all the homework problems that you should do, SO DO THEM ALL. Practice is the only way to do well in any O.Chem class. He also lets you have a "reference sheet" for exams.
Perrin's a lot easier than Ternansky, and you still learn the material. Exams are only a bit tricky but reflective of assigned problems. Do the homework and make sure you understand it. Create an awesome cheat sheet. It will save your grade!!!
I thought his class was a lot harder than necessary. I had a really hard time following what he was saying in class. He just lectures without ppt or anything. If you are able to learn without visual aid then you may find it easier, but i had a really hard time. he's a nice guy but ochem is already hard enough and his class made it harder.
He's the god of ochem. His explanations of the concepts are very clear and he allows a cheat sheet on all the exams. His exams are quiet difficult (50-55% average typically)but he curves well, and I ended up with an A. Homework and attending office hours is key to doing well in the class! Would recommend him for 140A!
You must do all the hw questions, especially those with ! by them, to do decently. I got a C and regret doing better if I understood how to problems betters. He explains things well but you just need to figure out how to do the homework to do decently. His exams are tricky since he'll tweak hw problems, but you do get a "reminder" sheet to help.
Don't miss lecture or discussion and make sure you really understand ALL the practice problems as they are indicative of what's on the test. Dr. Perrin is a very entertaining professor and incredibly knowledgeable about what he's teaching. Enjoy!
I decided to take Organic Chemistry another year. KEY TO A: PREPARE! I REALLY wanted to take his class, but the time commitment for this class is a lot, and I already have a lot on my plate. As I've heard from others, his tests are representative of the problems in the book and are fairly difficult. In conclusion, GREAT professor, but HARD class.
It's Ochem, so it's automatically hard. However Perrin makes it easier. Just two midterms and a final, and the average person will do terribly on all 3 so you probably need only like 70 percent for A. I thot I did horrible, and ended up getting an A. Its vry clear what u have to do: he assigns problems, and uses those exact ones for tests: do them.
Dr. Perrin is a good professor. He assigns questions with exclamation points on the that will show up on the midterm. So if you do the practice problems literally 6-7 times you should be able to get an A in his class. But only sign up for the class if you have time to. If you're balancing other hard classes I would take ochem another quarter.
This was a class I feel hard to say. I got around average (B-) on first midterm and second midterm. And I felt I would end with a B- or lower for the class, but surprisingly, I got A. I have to say, final means a lot, seriously, a lot. Final had 550 points, first midterm 200 points, second midterm 250 points. Prepare well for final!!
The only thing I recommend students who will take Dr. Perrin's course: DO ALL ASSIGNED PROBLEMS INCLUDING EXERCISES!!!! And go to his office hour and review sessions to ask any questions you have. He is really nice, caring, and enthusiastic professor! His course is not easy A but if you solve all problems he assigned, you can get an A! Good luck!:)
Perrin is a great lecturer, though he is a bit old. His class is considered relatively easy since he curves the average as B- rather than a C. He also allows cheat sheets for exams, which is AMAZING. Especially when using for synthesis problems The exams were representative of the hw q's and stuff we learned in lecture. Helpful to read txtbook.
Beware of negative points. exams are calculated by total points per question minus negative points per question. So, lets say if question 10 had parts a,b,c, and d and each one had 5pts and you answered 2 right and 2 wrong your total pain is 10-100. A big fat zero. Thanks for nothing Perrin.
This man has no pause button; basically gives you half a dozen concepts each class without even a 30- second pause for you to digest the information. His tests are nothing like the (very few) examples he goes over in class and they are somewhat similar to the hardest hw problems. Ochem is already hard but with Perrin its nearly impossible.
He simplifies the material so that the students can understand it more thoroughly. He holds review sessions before the exams. There is about a 15%-20% curve applied to the course.
He's a really caring professor (go to office hrs and he'll try his best to know you/your name)! Read before going to lectures because you won't understand what he's talking about and think everything is rushed. Do all the hw problems because he picks from those for the exams. Fair exams/ get a cheat sheet. No online hw, just midterms and final.
Make sure you read the textbook before class because Professor Perrin does not slow down. He does a good job explaining things but you need to read ahead of time if you want to understand anything. Tests are very fair and based completely off of textbook problems. Beware as he does not podcast and only uses the blackboard.
Read Chapters and finish all assigned homework ON TIME. Be aware of negative points ( points eared positive points- negative points) for each question. I had a really terrible TA, Garry. He was just terrible. OMG, kept talking about how we cant get into Med school if we dont do better. Perrin teaches like if he is presenting to a bunch of PhDs.
Only use the board and his voice in lectures (no ppt or podcast), so be prepared to read beforehand. He is good at explaining things (if you already read that section). Exams are not too hard since you can have cheat sheet (curve is generous if class is bad). Do his recommended hw (should have a solution manual to check) and you will be fine.
Best!
His reminder sheets were amazing, I'd say for the final just put all the reactions in a flow sheet and problems from the practice final, but I'm going to have to memorize reactions over break. To do well READ and do all the hw problems (the whole class is only graded on 2 midterms and a final) they (the ! ones) basically show up on the tests.
He is a very intelligent professor, but does not use lecture slides so it can be hard to follow what's happening in class. Make sure to read the book and DO EVERY SINGLE PROBLEM. If you do not do all the book problems, you will not pass the tests. Sections were optional (very useful) and the tests were fair compared to the practice ones.
Basically taught myself the whole class.
Liked Perrin a lot. He made a lot of funny jokes and is a good explainer. He is a bit monotone, so warning for zoning off. He is very old-fashioned and doesn't have powerpoint if that bothers you. His tests are fair.
Professor Perrin isn't the best lecturer, but he's great at answering questions. I tend to go to his office hours weekly and he was great helping me. Perrin's exams are extremely reflective and almost exactly the same as the homework he assigns us. In order to get a good grade, you must do the readings and the homework in advance!!
Out of the four years I have been a student at this school, Professor Perrin is by far the worst professor I have had the misfortune of having. I ended this class with an A because the final average was 42% and he had to curve to keep the majority of the class from failing. The only reason he is still a professor is because he has tenure.
Great professor
Get ready to teach yourself almost everything- lectures are pretty surface level. Make sure to do all the assigned problems in the textbook and to read before lectures-it really helps. Grading is only the midterms and final, but tests are very straightforward (most questions come from the assigned problems)
Grading is 100% based on exams. The only resource you get is the textbook. In lectures, he would go on very long tangents regarding things we didn't need to know. He never went over practice problems. His lectures were him writing on paper projected onto the screen. His writing was very difficult to read, you couldn't read the subscripts.
Grades are based on 2 midterms and a final. The lectures aren't very helpful for exam content. Perrin is very old fashioned and lectures with a sharpie and a piece of paper projected. You must read the textbook and basically learn everything on your own. Would not recommend.
Dirt-old and should retire. Lectures are a waste of time as he discusses stuff that isn't gonna show up on the tests. The only resources you are given is a poorly written textbook and the posted answer keys which have many mistakes that you have to confront the TA about. Writes on a single piece of paper for lecture. Graded only by three exams.
Prof Perrin is a good guy who is funny during lectures. However his lectures often have nothing to do with the material on exams. So be ready to self study and do every assigned practice problem or you will struggle. First 2 midterms were fair. Final was insane.
Be prepared to teach yourself...your score in the class is based off of 2 midterms and one final. Professor Perrin is a nice and funny guy but his lectures are hard to follow along with and he writes super small. The only good thing is that he allows a double sided cheat sheet for every exam.
Very sweet and funny, but imo his teaching methods are pretty bad. Podcasts, but no slides. Only does notes on paper (often hard to read :/). You MUST read the textbook before lectures, or you'll end up confused, which can be hard to do esp. once everything starts piling up. Ended up dropping week 6 bc i realized i wouldn't pass w/o a huge curve.
He's pretty good I guess. The class is mostly hard because ochem is inherently hard. As long as you do the textbook reading and exercise problems for homework. The only 3 things in the grade book are the 2 midterms and the final exam. Most people suck at ochem so the curve is pretty generous. 67% was enough for an A-.
Doesn't know how to teach, useless lectures, insanely hard grading policies (with negative marking), no extra credit, will have to teach yourself the whole thing on your own, IF YOU LIKE YOUR GPA DON'T TAKE HIM
Lectures were useless. had to teach myself the whole time, the exams didn't feel similar to the questions in the textbook(even though he said they were), so the allotted cheatsheets were useless. The final was an insane 55% of the course grade, and the whole class is on a curve so you'll never know your actual grade until the end. Don't take
Ignore the salty reviews, because Perrin's class is reasonably fair. While he isn't the best lecturer, he is very transparent about how his exams are. They're literally questions ripped straight from the homework and not even changed. Anyone who didn't do well on the exams either didn't do the homework or doesn't know how to revise.
His lectures are not very helpful, however he takes test problems directly out of the textbook. As long as you read the textbook you'll do fine and he grades completely on a curve a 71 was an A
Incredible professor who's a brilliant researcher and an alright teacher. Very clear grading criteria and tests are near-identical to the homework + allowance of a cheat sheet. Would take again for 40A!
he lwk an old fart, but he kinda chill tho
I had this professor during my fall quarter and your grade was only based on 2 midterms and the final. I had a really hard time learning the content itself in this class as his teaching was not that helpful. I relied a lot on the textbook, so for those who are learning ochem for the first time, I personally would not recommended this professor.
