very lenient on the quizzes and papers. never bought the book. just read the prompts the night before and youll be fine. he speaks all day, can be boring but he uses emphasis on his speeches.
Don't buy the book unless you like carrying books on campus to show people how many courses you're taking. Lectures are a bore, but attendance is mandatory. Sigh...Wikipedia will be your friend if you don't have the book. The lectures have nothing to do with the quizzes. If you have a basic understanding of History, you'll be fine.
BORING... class is mandatory and all i did in his class was fall asleep. his quizzes are based on some articles which were not part of the lecture. he has two test.quizzes and test are all essay he doesnt believe in multiple choice. you'll be good if you know some things about history, but if you dont take someone else. need more comments check NY.
Right away with him you can tell he is very passionate about teaching and History. He is the first teacher ive had that had lectured the whole period, without any stopping or interruption. This usually equals boredom for many people. He does expect students to put effort into class which is why every assesment in his class is essay form.
I would agree with almost all the other ratings. His lectures are long and generally boring, but very informative. Attendance is mandatory, dont really need the book unless you want to waste your money. EVERYTHING IS IN ESSAY FORMAT.
VERY passionate about history! lectures are like a monologue, attendance is mandatory. Very good looking professor though--his looks kept me awake throughout the class. Basically taught myself. A fair grader. Three exams, One midterm paper and the final. Lectures throughout the whole time--kinda of boring...
Professor Ponce de Leon is a solid teacher. In this class, he lectures every time, all the time, but the lectures are full of content if you are prepared to absorb it. Overall, he wants his students to see the big picture, and if you can get that in this class, you're good to go.
Don't take this class if you want an easy way out. Professor Ponce de Leon is passionate and wants his students to leave having actually learned about history. Pay attention to his lectures and attend every class, and you will do great.. it's not hard to get an A if you put effort in. There is A LOT of writing, but he is a really fair grader.
Ponce de Leon is very passionate about teaching history. He lectures the WHOLE TIME..time goes by very slow in this class. He's pretty lenient when grading quizzes, exams and papers. easy class! just try to stay awake if possible. oh and he is very approachable! goodluck!
worst professor ever. lecture re confusing and he is hard to hear in the big auditorium. every test quiz and exam midterm and final is a lloooonnng essay. lectures don't help neither does power point(because its literally a photocopy of a book page) NEVER TAKE HIM!
This dude is kinda whack but, his class isn't that difficult. Attendance in mandatory and a pain because lectures are just really long and thorough. The tests are in essay format and aren't too difficult but you will have to study at least an hour for them. Hes really interested in what he teaches and is willing to help you if you ask questions
Really intelligent guy, but that doesn't help when you want a simple answer to a question. His class is a rough one. If you don't do too well in the beginning, he pays attention to improvement throughout the semester when he's giving the final grade. Download his lecture notes if he posts them. They'll help you the most on his quizzes.
Class is very boring especially if History is not your subject. Quizzes and Finals are essay format NOTHING is multiple choice. You really need to study, i did not buy the book just studied of his ppt and outlines and managed to get a 'C'!
Easy class, read up on all the things he gives you in study guide. Try your best on the quizes, and essay. Over all boring class, but really easy.
This teacher is super passionate with what he teaches! If you don't like history and are just looking for an easy A, GET OUT NOW!! Lectures are very boring, quizzes are only 3 questions each and only 1 essay to write. If he knows that you are really trying though, he'll give you the grade you deserve.
He's a great teacher and you can tell he loves what he does. He provides you with summaries of every chapter and slides with notes. This class has a lot of reading and is definitely hard work, but if you are looking to learn it is perfect. If you want an easy pass class, this is not the one.
Passionate teacher! His class is not just an easy pass though, it requires some time and effort if you want an A. It is, however, a great class to LEARN. I'm a bit biased since I'm already a history buff but I thought his class was easy. 4 short exams, 11 quizzes after each chapter in book, and a final. No multiple choice but grades fairly easily!
boring teacher! I love history and I was struggling to stay awake, let alone pay attention in his class. Avoid him if you can.
This class needs a lot of work to be done especially with this professor. He is a hard professor. Online quizzes, lowest one dropped, a lot of reading, one big paper, 4 written exams and final. He's passionate about the subject, but a very hard teacher.
The class requires you to do alot of reading not an easy A but he does curve grades in the end.
All of the tests are in essay format. You HAVE to do the readings or else you won't understand much because his powerpoints don't go in to detail. Helpful if you talk to him outside of class, but overall you have to put a lot of effort in if you want an A. He's really passionate about history, but it's still hard to keep your eyes open in class.
Exposed to very interesting readings. His final assignment is a 25 pg paper that is focused on 1 historically significant and American intellectual person in the 1960s. It'sa lot of work, but he teaches you how to do the paper on your own, step-by-step, using the readings. There are small quizzes after every reading, but just read, you're in college!
Since I love history, my opinion is probably biased since he's pretty awesome. He clearly knows what he's talking about and he's passionate about it. If you love history and want a passionate teacher, take this class because I honestly enjoy taking the essay exams.
He is a hard professor. History is not my best subject and for the test i did all the reading and looked at the notes but still failed my test. Didn't understand this but thats how it went. I regret taking this class so bad.
Super nice guy and really passionate about history! This makes his lectures easier to sit through. Grade based on exams, an essay and attendance! Kind of a hard class but I didn't read the book. Curves ended up with a C in the class.
Great class and amazing professor. Granted, I personally like history so the course was fairly easy for me, but I totally recommend this class. He's passionate, is very straightforward, and does a lot to help his students. To be quite honest, you can get by his class with some help from his powerpoints, group study, and reviewing his study guides.
Just like the comment are saying, this class is a tough one. Do not expect an A in the class because that will require a tremendous amount of work and reading. The essay tests have to be spot on to get an A. As for the professor, he's not that bad and will teach you A LOT about history but just remember, stay focus in class (hard to do)
ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY! THE BOOK IS ALSO MANDATORY GIVEN THAT THE BOOK COVERS A LOT MORE THAN IS COVERED IN LECTURE. THIS CLASS REQUIRES A LOT OF STUDYING FOR THE TESTS/ESSAYS.
Not an easy A. Reading the book is required as well as attendance. he hands out summaries of the lectures and gives you study guides before each test. exams are not easy, but if you email him he is willing to help. Hard GE curse. if your a history major you will like his class if not it will be pain. but overall great guy.
Class was cake! Read the book though! Everyone who complains expects to not drop a sweat! Read the summary before the class begins and take notes of extra details not mentioned in the summary.
Not a bad class. If you read over the lecture summaries and the textbook & take notes in class you will be fine. The study guid questions are usually the same exact exam questions. Which are written exams
He is a good professor. You can only miss 3 lectures or he will change your grade. Provides summaries online, suggest printing them out and adding stuff from lecture. Puts study guides online. The exams are 2 small essays in 30 minutes. One paper due and must see graduate assistant. In all, the class is easy if you put some time into it and study.
It's not an easy class, however, he tries to make it easy and attendance is mandatory. Throughout the class, you have 4 midterms that consist of 2 mini-essay questions in 30 minutes, a research paper and a final. Overall, the class is very interesting and he is very dedicated to his subject.
Attendance IS mandatory, however, by going to class you can absorb so much material and make the class so much easier. It's a lot of writing (all the exams were essays) but it was a really easy class if you just show up and vaguely pay attention. Ponce de Leon is a great teacher :)
A key tip for those who will be taking this class: It is not an easy A class! 4 exams, a research paper, and two essays for the final. The professor is actually very cool and is very passionate about history. Reading will be advised since the lectures don't cover the entire depth of a chapter. Takes attendance randomly
i started with an F and ended with an A. i honestly didn't change my studying habits at all but felt like the grading got easier throughout the semester as i know i got lazier. he's passionate. try to use his wordings in your examsessays.
Its barely week 4 and 14 of class dropped. I have never fallen asleep in class, but this class may change that... most boring professor i've ever taken. Reads from hand outs, long question breaks when no one has question. Grades easy, 7 (2-3 pg) response papers 3 in class quizzes, 1 final paper. ATTENDANCE MANDATORY. PPT lectures - snooze fest!!!!
He's pretty precise and straight forward in lectures so take notes. If you don't read, it's fine because the only time you will ever read is for your research paper. He's pretty chill and exam questions are basically given to you in class.
He say that without the book you won't do good on the test but i didn't read the book and i got 2 B's and 2 A's on the tests and a B on the paper that i wrote in like 5 hours. If you attend all of the class meetings and get the notes you should be good, just combine the class summaries posted online with the in class lecture notes & u good(gucci)
He's an okay prof, very passionate about history. Lectures summaries are available online. Read the book. He takes role randomly, but it's mandatory. 4 quizzes, a term paper & the final is 2 essay questions, like the quizzes. I got B's on all quizzes, C on paper and A on finals. I got very very frustrated w the class, but still got an A, idek how.
This professor is really into what he is teaching, and if you go to class and listen to what he lectures it's a very easy class. There are 4 exams, a final, and an essay. All tests are essay format, but it's not hard because he basically gives you the questions on the study guide. Super cool guy, no reason not to pass. He even curves the class.
Dr. De Leon could be better if he didn't try to cram his extreme liberal thinking down your throat. His lectures and projects are liberal slanted and if you state your case, he'll humiliate your or try to silence you.
It is essential to read the textbook for extra details because his tests are tough. He also takes attendance so you must go to class. he talks really fast and its tough to write and listen at the same time because he also has power points to show. he basically reads his lecture summaries and puts it in bullet form. overall, not my preferred teacher
I love this professor. His lectures are clear but he speaks fast, and he makes sure to see if anyone has any questions before proceeding. He's even super patient with stupid questions. A lot of 1 pg essays and quizzes, but they're super easy and the readings are usually only a few pages each. good mix of discussion and lecture. very passionate.
Loved this professor. He does grade on attendance, but he takes attendance randomly. Didn't open my book a single time, and got good grades on all tests because he posts study guides a couple days before tests that are pretty exact on the question you need to know. Lectures are aimed pretty liberally but so am I, so I liked it!
Pretty straight forward class; 4 tests, 1 five page essay, and a final. Tests are pretty tough but his study guides help. His lectures felt like they took 200 years to end. But overall not an easy A class...
Lectures are extremely long, but all the information for the tests are discussed in class on power points. You have to study hard for tests. Not an Easy A, but doable.
This class is very challenging! The test are very difficult and he is a very tough grader the final is cumulative and there is a lot of readings. Lectures are boring and long. You really have to work hard in order to get a decent grade. And sometimes when you do work hard you still end up getting a bad grade. NOT an easy A!
Although the lectures were pretty interesting, they were very long and soporific. He tells you exactly what he expects from you. Study guides are very helpful.
If you read the book after lectures you will get an A in this class. His lectures are very clear, he practically hands you a C in the class if you pay attention. But copying the slides alone will get you nowhere. Also it's better to sit the front of class, he'll get to know your face and average grades a little better. Helped me get an A.
Honestly, the study guide IS the test. He basically gives you the chance to answer what is exactly on the test prior to actually taking it. I was able to receive a decent grade from attending lectures (never cracked the book open). His TA graded my paper and gave me a low score. After having him review my paper, he changed it (fair teacher).
Make sure you review the study guide before the test! His test questions are the study guide basically. He is a good professor, but being in a lecture this size makes you lose sight of the lesson.
There are 3 exams, 1 final and the class is huge. It's very hard to stay awake. Those 4 exams and one writing assignment are the only things that make up your grade. He gives a study guide so it's easy to get the "BIG PICTURE," but it's not enough to get an A. You need to memorize specifics to get those little points.
Lectures are dense, but you need to pay attention because the tests are essays only. Don't focus so much on facts, focus on ideas and connections to other ideas. Highly recommend reading the lecture summaries that he posts, but don't rely on them. Nice guy, you'll get a solid B.
Not easy, but a dedicated professor. You will actually learn a lot from his class. Exams and paper are very doable with effort, and help is always available.
I passed the class no problem without studying. Showing up to class helps and taking notes. I barely studied. The tests also include material from both the lectures and reading. Reading is long. I suggest at minimal skimming through notes
Honestly, one of the most boring professors ever. All he does is show basic black and white powerpoints all semester and reads from them. No lecture or insight whatsoever. Assigns four six-page essays and grades papers with no feedback whatsoever. Also, extremely rude!
Most classes are just full lectures, but you will learn a lot and he's very passionate. It's possible to receive good scores on the exams if you take the study guide seriously. Only annoying thing is you can't leave class after exams, other than that i highly reccommend.
One of those professors who lectures off of powerpoints. He was rude at times. Your grade is based on 4 essay exams and then 1 essay final (that we had a cheat sheet for). Not at all an easy A. He had study guides for each exam. Personally wouldn't recommend.
Definitely make this course you last choice if all the classes are full. He is often rude and lecture heavy and reads directly from his notes. He does not make you memorize dates and names but you have to know the content or else you wont pass his exams. There are 3 exam each one includes 4 short answers and 2 essays that must be completed.
This class will leave you feeling accomplished when you learn the material. 3 all essay exams, plus a final & one paper. He is helpful and a straightforward professor. If you don't study, you will not do well. Not a super easy A, but if you study and work hard, you will get a good grade. Overall would recommend if you are ready to put in the work!
This professor is very knowledgable. Also, he gives study guides for every exam, posts lecture summaries, lets you have a cheat sheet for the final, and rounds grades up at the end of the semester. It's not necessarily an easy A, but he gives you a lot of tools to succeed. If you're willing to put in the effort, you will learn a lot!
Attendance mandatory :(. Did other class hw during lecture and just crammed night before every midterm and got A. Legit just read over his lecture outlines and do the study guide. For study guide just know the main points for each possible essay. Paying attention is useless, just go super saiyan on the lecture outlines and study guide.
Most of the class consists of him lecturing and reading off the PowerPoint. His class isnt very interesting or inspiring, would definitely not recommend. The quizzes are okay, if you go the day before he gives a overview of the answers which are helpful !
Attendance is mandatory but paying attention is not! Your grade is made up of three exams, one paper, and the final exam. He gives out study guides before every exam so you can prepare. Exams are all in-class essays. He curves his grades so it's easy to pass. His class is lecture heavy but you can learn a lot by taking notes and listening.
His class was very boring and lecture-heavy, and it was really hard to take notes during class. Exams are 2 essay questions and 2 IDs, but he goes over the answers with us the week before the exam so PAY ATTENTION ON REVIEW DAY. You have to show up to class but don't have to pay attention until review. Note taking that day and the textbook helps.
He is not really welcoming and his lectures are super boring. He says to read the book a lot and I personally had to but may not be mandatory for you. He grades heavy and does not give feedback at all. Definitely do not recommend.
The Professor is really nice. Participation is important if you want to pass his class. We only had four essays to do as part of our grades.
He's an okay professor. He mainly focuses on the economic issues of American history and then briefly touches on everything else. The course grade is based on four essay tests and one essay, so be prepared to work. Boring lectures that are not really that useful. Although he was whatever he did curve the grades and provided a study guides
This professor is a cool guy! Lecture heavy and he takes attendance so make sur eyou go to class! Other than that there aren't many assignments. A couple essays and a couple essay exams, nothing too hard or too crazy. I only used the book for the papers, not the exams. His lectures are very detailed you don't really need ot use the book.
He is cool and all but he is a really hard grader
The grades all depend on 3 writing exams and a paper. He also requires you to read the chapters for the lectures because the exams ask for specific details. It is best to not skip out because chapter summaries are not helpful at all. Half of the 2nd semester was in person. The rest was online due to the COVID-19.
The man doesn't breathe! It's all lecture lecture lecture until he takes a quick breath, then more talking. It was so hard to even try to understand because he just kept going. I've never had a professor that made me feel so dead especially when I love history. His personality is great, just not his teaching style.
If you are not ready to read/write please don't take this class with this Professor. We do not meet for class ever, he tells us to read these packets and we will have to write essays on them. Grades only based off of the essays, he is quite rude through email, and is a very TOUGH GRADER. If you do not read thoroughly, you'll get a bad grade.
A lot of dense & complex readings with no supplementary lectures to aid in understanding the readings. Reading & writing essays is basically it. Prompts to readings are written so complex it takes a while to understand what hes asking. Very tough grader. Difficult to know whats hes looking for. Entire class was a struggle.
There were four papers, clear rubrics, and relatively easy topics. He is a tough grader but if you ask him any history questions, he's super nice and helpful. I'd love to take another class with him, he's knowledgeable. He just wants the best for the students and especially wants to teach his students!
He is easily the WORST professor I have taken. He does not lecture, in the course of the semester you only meet 8 times. Those 8 times are student lead discussions rather than lectures and after you turn in your paper which he has confusing criteria. If you're interested in this class just purchase book and read it cause he doesn't teach!
There were no actual organized lectures, and classes were just discussions where students bring questions about the assigned reading. The reading is whole chapters and 13-page essays every week and it did not help me understand the concepts for the exam essays. Essays questions were specific and writing depends on the info you have retained.
If you would like less self-esteem go for it.
Don't take this class! He doesn't care to teach and you basically have to teach yourself. He isn't very specific with what he wants and grades hard. Find a different professor if you like history and actually want to learn.
For context, I am typically an A student. I even went to his office hours to ask for help and literally all he told me was that my papers were too academic??? He expects journalism and the only paper I got an A on was one written in the most basic terms possible. I felt like I was writing in elementary/middle school if I wanted a solid grade.
Class is worth 100 pts; 25 pts per essay; 4 essays total. No textbook is required because he makes you read his written essays to use as sources for your papers. You read about 7 essays per unit (11-13 pgs). He says class is mandatory to pass, but it isn't. THIS PROFESSOR DOES NOT LECTURE! He expects his students to come to class with questions.
Classes were centered around student discussion with no plan B for when no one talked. Lots of dead air. Readings were fine, nothing mind-blowing. Easy grader if you do the reading and use evidence in your arguments. Kind of rude at times.
Attendance is definitely something that is important to understand the material even though attendance isn't mandatory. The structure of the class I personally disliked, just because it was discussion style and attendance was low and even though it was a upper-division history class not everyone talked. I did enjoy the class. Essays were hard.
I am an A student who tried my hardest, even going to his office hours, and still could not get an A. He is rude and does not care for his students.
No feedback. Doesn't care. Your effort on your exams does not depends on your grade, idk what is, but his grading is not fair.
Class consisted of one or two reading a week, followed by written essay exams based on the last 4-5 readings just done. His lectures are unorthodox and can be scattered but are useful if you read the material and have questions. Grading is mostly just made up of a few essays. Not easy class, not hard would take him again.
Even though teaching History, he seemed to be taking sides in his lecture rather than maintaining a neutral viewpoint of History, framing the students into his political opinions, which I hate.
this professor only has one way of grading and that is on 4 of the exams he gives thought out the semester. 25 points each exam and based on 5 essays HE writes. Does not teach but rather expect you to come to class with questions. Each essay is taken in class and you must write 4-6 pages total on 2 completely different questions. Do not recommend.
No homework, only 3 written exams (3-4 pages each question, 2 questions per exam). he takes attendance half the time but miss 3+ days and it'll affect your grade, but super chill class. No need to participate or even do the readings, but if you don't study the readings before the exams GOOD RIDANCE & good luck. He's chill and very smart, good class
4 Tests, 25 pts each that make up total grade. There are readings to answer the tests but I passed by skimming them so take it as you will. He takes attendance but sometimes he doesn't and if you miss more than 3 unexcused times it affects your grade. Show up and skim the readings and you should pass with a C.
3 written exams where you answer 2 questions each based on readings written by him. The questions are provided beforehand about a week before the exam. No homework at all, so make sure you at least skim through the readings for test day and you'll be good.
He's a nice guy/ super passionate about history. Classes are discussion based, which was super helpful and engaging. The readings are summaries of the textbook which are always around 13 -14 pages. The class was fairly easy with 3 in class essays, he uploads the prompt a week before giving you enough time to prepare. Easy class if you do readings.
No hw EVER, 3 SHORT exams (FRQ type) and 1 5pg reflection final graded very easy. U read his essays and then take the exams on them. No teaching, class is used for answering questions on the essays read. Use a summarizer like I did instead of reading fr and easy A imo. You get the exam Q's beforehand so it's easy to plan out answers. Chill guy.
