Interesting class. He's usually nice. Not the most helpful guy, but he's a very easy grader.
Really interested in Philosophy. He expects you to learn the material yourself and do the reading. The book is expensive as well. Grades easy but also doesnt not do a very good job of being available for help. Very confusing class structure as well. He changes dates on reading with little or no warning. Take him if you like to learn by yourself.
He is not very helpful at all explaining the concepts of logic. This class is too indepth for just a Gen Ed credit. Unless your a philosophy major, pass on this for a Gen ed credit....
Hard class for a level 100. I like to be challenged so it was nice for me. The people before me most likely didnt do the reading. This class takes active participation and involvement. If you want a class that just lets you go through the motions, dont take this. If you like a challenge and can push YOURSELF to learn, then take this class.
Dr. Hogg did an excellent job with this class. He made learning logic fun and easy. He is also a phenomenal person. Never have I had a teacher who cares so much about his students and truly wants every one of them to succeed in his class. He is one of my favorite profs ever.
So far the class has been easy. You do have to sort of teach yourself, but there is no homework. If you have questions you can ask in class. All you do for the whole class is take like 5 tests...thats it...and they are not even that bad.
How anyone can not like this man is beyond me. He's helpful, genuinely kind, almost ridiculously patient, and always willing to go the extra mile (or six) for his students; I remain resentful that I'm unable to take Logic with him. Even if you don't share his fascination with Epictetus, this is THE professor to have for philosophy. Go get'm!
Prof. Hogg was very helpful in making the assigned papers easy to complete. The class took a fair amount of work, but was quite reasonable. Prof. Hogg was a great person, excellent teacher, and he really cared that everyone did well. I recommend him!
Very fun class. Exctra credit oppourtunities made it very hard to get a bad grade. Just listen and come to class.
He cares very much about his students' progress in class and in the world. He encourages them to think about things in a new way, and encourages questions and discussion. He is a very thoughtful person, and I would definitely recommend him. If you ever need to talk about anything, whether related to the class or not, he makes himself available.
He was a great professor! He cares about each student and wants everyone to succeed! He is generous and giving! Logic is a great class to take, you learn a lot.
Professor Hogg was an awesome prof to take PHI 101 with. I really enjoyed this class; it made me think a lot more about the world around me. He picks good reading that's actually pretty interesting. :)
He is an absolutely amazing man! Hilarious and always tells little funny stories. Logic was such an interesting class and I learned a lot. He tells you exactly what will be on each test and gives tons of opportunities for extra credit. It's really a subject that I could have loved or hated depending on the prof, and he made me love it.
Awesome prof :) Makes logic fun and easy to learn, and he is very helpful to his students. He cares about student progress and encourages them to speak up if they are confused.
Prof Hogg wants to see his students succeed, so he does everything he can to make that possible. If it's hard for you, do the homework and ask questions in class; if not, just read the book sections (short) and learn it in class. Prof Hogg is very friendly and likes to get to know his students. You'll have fun in his class.
Great prof. Exams were all around 120pts, but he only scores them out of 100. so lots of extra credit opportunities. If something is unclear (very likely when taking logic) ASK. He pretty much begs students to ask questions, so dont be shy about it. He wants to help. I hope I have the chance to take another cl**** with him.
The Professor is great... Dont take anyone else for this class. Dont take logic if you are good at math, it is alot harder then math 122 would ever be. But overal He is a great person and really cares about what you think and actually cares about you
Great Professor! By far the best I have/will have in my college career. He really cares about his students and what he teaches them. Exam was really easy, all based off of past quizes. Great class, easy, and fun!
Great man all around! I won't say that logic is easy but it is not hard. If you listen to him and do the majority of the work it is not bad. He wants his students to do well and he will try in every way to help. He also makes the best analogies!
If you are good at math, then you will be better served taking another class. You will have to work hard to keep up and to do well in this class. He does really want you to do well and that helps.
Decent Prof. He has good intentions, but can sometimes be a bit short with the students who are lost. Really flexible with attending class, and HW, although you def. have to study and know the stuff for exams. Overall though, can't complain, got an A!
Prof. Hogg is amazing. He is very helpful and his analogies never cease to make me laugh.
Spent a lot of time giving pep-talks to take the fear out of Logic. Funny guy.
He is an amazing professor, he is a very nice guy and really wants everyone in his class to succeed. He cares about each of his students, and he really shows that. Logic is kind of difficult to understand, and you really can't just read the book to understand it, going to class really does help you learn the material, and do better on the tests.
Amazing. really listen to him and you will be just fine. He truly cares about students' success and has a lot to offer. also gives quite a bit of advice for life in general. He is funny as well which helped. I took this class without knowing what i was getting into and i got really lucky. hands down one of my favorite proffessors ever.
Not the typical ethics class -really boring - no debates on controversial topics. The only thing you do in class is read Aristotle. He is not very clear on his grading requirements, and he is easily sidetracked and rather opinionated. Easy A but not real interesting.
Awesome Professor. If you have to take logic take him. The class is hard, but he structures it really well and is always there to help. Trust me you won't regret taking him.
A treat to have taken this class. Tried to scare us at the first class, but all it did was prepare me. The class is no pushover, but I had four other classes this summer along with this and I managed to get an A, and I'm no genius.
He truly wants his students to succeed. It was a bit annoying how he kept telling our class how easy everything was and how we were on our way to ?funville? (of course it's easy to the professor). Sometimes doesn?t understand how difficult the material can be. He's very funny but sometimes unclear. Participate in class if you want to do well.
Great Prof (read some Russian Lit for a guaranteed A)!
I honestly never would have made it through this class without Professor Hogg! So helpful and really cares about all his students. Attendance is not mandatory but if you want to do well you need to go. Really didn't like logic but SO thankful to have had Professor Hogg to help me through it!!!
Very kind, but the class seemed to never end and there was no discussion in our class which sucked.
Take Him! He's really nice and you will learn life lessons that are actually USEFUL as well as the book materials. Two papers and easy weekly quizzes plus bonus points randomly THATS IT! He really helps alot if you ask
He is very moody, and quite preachy. However, he does care about students doing well and will do anything to help you if you ask. Belittles the class at times. Again, very moody at times, but easy A.
As long as your class has good discussion then it's pretty interesting. He's always willing to help, and invites you to his office if you need help with papers. One 1000 word, and one 2000 word paper.Prompts are given for the 2000 word, but the 1000 word is up to you. Although he's a clergy member, he doesn't involve his beliefs in his teachings.
Great guy, very smart, too. Can be a little annoyed with students who don't do the work. But, if you listen to what he says and do it, you will learn everything and get a good grade. Would take him again!
Hogg is one of the best professors at Grand Valley. The way he teaches is phenomenal, he knows exactly when to bring it home. He's one of those people who you see in life, and wich you could take a seat and talk forever, if you get those moments like some do! Definitely a worth while professor.
One of my favorite profs at GV (and I've had a ton of them)! Makes you very interested in PHI, makes you think, makes you really examine your own life while learning the fundamentals of philosophy. Best not to miss class though! Wonderful lecturer, open-minded, encourages debate. I've barely used the textbook so far and am at an A in the class.
Hogg is defintely one of the best profs at GV, he is amazing at teaching. He always relates the material to you, and himself. He really cares to make the class enjoyable, and values your input. Make sure to speak up in his class, he loves that.
He was an easy prof to understand. he doesnt know how to use blackboard which makes it difficult. Also, he says grades dont matter so you will be waiting until the end of the semester to figure out what your actual grade is, which is a hassle. Recommend for an easy course.
Wisest man I've ever met. He cares deeply about his students' success. If you don't get the grade you want in this class, you are to blame not him. Logic takes lots of practice to master.
Mr. Hogg is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had the pleasure of learning from. He is active in class, involved with his students, and legitimately cares about their wellbeing. He is one of the wisest men I've met and practices what he teaches. Also, his beard is amazing.
He's hilarious, his stories are awesome, and he'll tell you at least fifteen times during the class that his number one rule is "not to bore the students." And he follows it. Best of all, he looks like Santa Claus.
He's a really nice guy. Tells lots of stories about his own life and relationships, which in any other class I would find annoying, but seeing as this class is about life and philosophy it kinda worked. He's very helpful, understanding, and willing to work with anyone.
Professor Hogg is one of my favourite professors here! I had no interest in logic before, but he makes it so easy and simple, as long as you pay attention and do the assignments (which he does not collect). There is nothing to turn in, only tests, which is awesome. He's hilarious, and really nice. And he has learned how to use Blackboard.
Honest to god the best professor I've ever had. He will go to great lengths to make sure his student understand the material. His anecdotes are not only hilarious but useful. He really cares about his students and it shows. Logic is a hard class but he is the best choice for the class. If you fail its your own fault for not putting forth the effort
Professor Hogg was an excellent professor to have my freshman year. He absolutely loves teaching, he said he would bee happy if he died while lecturing. He shows a great interest in his students which is always appreciated. The class is worth it because at the end he focuses on the Stoics and it is some powerful stuff.
Hogg is hands down the best proff i've ever had. He cares and loves his students SO much. He gives GREAT advice. I learned a lot from him about life. Do the reading and STUDY LECTURE notes and you'll do fine. I'd honestly call this man up just to have coffee and listen to him talk about life. He is a great guy!
Phenomenal professor. By far one of my favorites on campus. His life stories add so much to the subject. I wouldn't even mind taking the class again.
He is a really nice and helpful guy. I think I would like him more if the subject was more interesting. Philosophy isn't my thing. He made the class more interesting though by giving examples from real life.
Hogg is passionate and wants to teach you. Don't think of this class as just a blow off class, he wants to teach you a valuable skill. He makes Logic fun and easy. He has a good sense of humor. He wants you to work hard, but he wants to help you. The test are easy but it's easy to slack off.
Take him- A man who is truly passionate about what he teaches and to whom he teaches it to. You get what you give in this class (Logic).
Very well teaching professor. If you have the chance to take him, by all means do so. He knows what he is teaching and will explore in depth anything you don't find clear. He uses life stories and humor to keep the dry text of Aristotle fresh. Journals every other week and one paper is all you have to accomplish. Plus a few quizzes, but no biggie.
I have never learned more useful information in a class! He uses humorous, real life stories to explain a pretty boring topic of Aristotle's Ethics. I highly encourage you to take this class, because you will most likely use this information outside of GVSU every day. I know I will remember Prof Hogg's class for life!
The atmosphere of the class is really easygoing which I love. The content can be hard for some to understand but with the relaxed attitude and interesting stories he makes Aristotle seem like common sense. He is also super approachable which is good if you're not usually the type that is comfortable asking questions.
Class with Professor Hogg is interesting and relates a lot to life. FYI, Not hot attractive but an interesting guy.
I have the utmost respect for Professor Hogg. He makes a very dry subject applicable to life. I can honestly say he has made me a better person and given me invaluable knowledge that would otherwise require years of life experience. If you want to just "get by" or not "think", take another section and do not waste this man's time.
Favorite class and teacher.
The prof is a nice guy. The stuff he teaches aren't too bad. Exams are a bit hard. You really do have to study for this class in order to do well in it. 30 min a day for sure, cramming doesn't help much either. Half of the exam are hand written problems.
I don't understand the hype for Professor Hogg. He's easily the most bias professor in the Philosophy department. He loses assignments and unless you agree with everything he says, you're bound to be annoyed during lecture. The class is for the simple-minded and religious.
Dr. Hogg is such an incredible professor/ human being. He genuinely cares about his students and has such a kind heart. He is by far the best professor at GVSU. If you want to grow as a person- take his class!
Just such a confusing prof. He was all over the place for grading journals, gave us virtually no rubric for the final paper, and just told stories every class that didn't help us learn anything about reading Aristotle. He is also very condescending and is rude about things.
I personally could not stand him as a professor. I thought he was extremely pompous and condescending. He appeared nice and caring, but I felt that he was secretly being rude but in a way that came across as nice. His grading was on a whim so you never knew what your grade was and he never put anything on blackboard. I would not not take him again.
I would not recommend taking him as a professor. I never felt comfortable speaking my opinion in class because if you did not agree with him, he would completely shoot down your ideas and he ALWAYS had to be right. I think he thinks too highly of himself. He is a very smart man, he just comes off as condescending.
Based from GRCC. I recommend this professor to anyone interested in philosophy. He's very helpful, considerate with his students. From GRCC, his class was easy, but not a cake-walk. Expect your opinions to be argued against too. Some think he's condescending, maybe, But give him a chance. Don't be afraid to voice your opinion. NEED MORE SPACE...
He is the type of professor that will not help you at all unless you come to him with specific questions. He expects too much from his students as far as making students teach themselves THEN helping if/when students are confused about the material.
This prof is not good. He doesn't teach well at all. He is mean when you ask a question. He think everyone should already know everything before coming to class. Tests are super hard. I WOULD'NT take a class with this guy EVER.
I took logic with Prof Hogg and I was sadly mistaking when I thought the class would be easy. It was extremely difficult if you didn't follow his guidelines...which I learned was a bad idea. He is an intelligent man and knows his stuff. He is also very understanding and helpful. I recommend him to anyone!
If you're taking class with Hogg..slap yourself. Although he does go through material, he is useless in helping students, as well as ridicules them for not having answers to his questions 110% correct in a frustratingly calm and smarmy manner. Surely was not one of my favorite professors at GV.
This professor will seem great on the first day and I'm sure he is a great guy but he is a horrible professor. His emails are VERY condescending. The papers in class make it seem like it should be a 400 level class.
He is a really sweet professor. For the nature of philosophy, he does a really good job explaining the material throughly, and while sometimes he may get sidetracked it serves as more of a com medic relief than anything else. Would recommend him for Philosophy 101 but make sure you make yourself known to him.
pretty good prof. Make you you pay attention to what he says in class
Hogg is awesome, funny, and smart. He's very passionate about teaching, and intellectually stimulating. He's also a priest, which he talks about a lot (if that's an issue for you) but I feel that Dr. Hogg's class is a benefit for all!
I think Robb is one of the BEST professor's at GVSU. He can come off harsh and tough at first but that is his way of pushing his students to improve because he cares. His stories are funny. I have never respected a professor as much as I respect this one. You have to work for it and try in his class but that's no different than real life.
Prof. Hogg means well but for a 100 level class, it's outrageous. His phone is constantly going off, he tries to relate everything to a child like example, his tests are ridiculously difficult, it takes him forever to email back, and if you have trouble he says "study more". He's arrogant and doesn't care about his students success. Good luck.
According to Hogg, logic is the EASIEST and most applicable thing you'll ever learn -- it's all pooh bear and legos.
I'm a 6 year senior and this is by far my least favorite professor out of all the schools I've attended. He's incredibly condescending. Everyone sits outside class and complains everyday. I witnessed an honest 40 something year old man pick up smoking after quitting for a decade because of his frustration from this Professor.
He's a very nice man as far as being a person goes, but as a professor I wouldn't recommend him for Logic. I don't have much to compare to in the Philosophy department so take my word with a grain of salt, but your other option is Geometry. If you're one of the students who think Math isn't for you Logic is like learning a new language.
Hogg makes it seem if you do not do well in logic ,your whole life will be a failure. He does not lecture, he expects that you will teach yourself and just ask questions on confusing topics in class. I passed logic just fine, yet he made it much more confusing and difficult then it had to be. I would advise you too search for other professor's.
Professor Hogg is a great. He genuinely cares about his students more than any other professor I've taken. logic is a language and he does a great job of teaching you something that you have no concept of. He treats you like an adult and lets you make your own decisions. Do the work, and it becomes easy.
Rob is a great professor!! Concepts were just a little confusing and tough to grasp at first, but I payed attention in class, read the book, didn't give any excuses, and then it was the most fun, straight forward, and easiest class ever! I only took this class from curiosity, and it helps me distinguish people's invalid arguments in real life!
He is not clear on anything that he expects. He asks really hard questions on topics in class that have nothing to do with the lectures and then criticizes everyones responses. If you don't write about something he agrees with you will get a bad grade.
I am on the dean's list and have never failed a class and I'm barely passing!!! He is very unclear on papers and a ridiculously hard grader. He spends the entire class talking about is pretentious world views that have nothing to do with philosophy then gives us a quiz on what he didn't teach us with trick questions! I'm ripping my hair out!!!
Very dry but he's learning, and improving, to be better
I did not enjoy his class. He is a sweet man, but his grading criteria for the essays was super confusing and unfair. If you write about something he disagrees with, you will not get a good grade. For the quizzes, make sure you read the textbook because he puts in the most random questions sometimes.
If you are taking this just as a gen-ed, take it with Hogg! He makes philosophy fun, makes a lot of jokes, and gives excellent life advice. He wants to see all of his students pass and cares about their grades. There are a few online quizzes throughout the semester that are easy, and two papers (both fairly easy).
One of the worst professors I've had at GV. His tests are nearly impossible and if you aren't prepared for class or come to class you're screwed. He was offensive when I wore a shirt of a different university and raised his voice to me when I couldn't get a topic. I'm a junior and I know GV has WAY better professors. Save your money.
Had a terrible terrible time in Logic. Hogg would not answer any questions or give any help, which was horrible considering it's a very confusing subject. Went to his office hours and he said he was busy, all three times. Definitely would recommend just taking math instead.
Professor Hogg will teach you nothing. The classes are designed to go over book work, but he will complain if you ask him to do any problems. If you ask him a question or to clarify something he acts like you are speaking a foreign language and will move away from you asap. I was really excited to take this class, but I hate it thanks to Hogg.
Dr. Hogg is a good teacher and knows his philosophy well, but I would have to say that he does on occasion come off as a little biased (I attribute to his strong religious affiliation.) nothing wrong with being religious but on occasion he has made comments about groups of people that offended me. However, he does help with papers if you need it.
Professor Hogg was very inspirational, he taught many great life lessons that I will keep forever. Some of the assignments were unclear and the class is a little unorganized but I highly suggest taking Philosophy with him.
Hogg is extremely passionate about Logic and wants his students to succeed. He is incredibly helpful, relates the value of the material to everyday life, and uses a point system that is easy to excel with. You must do work@home, but that's the nature of the class. Tone can be harsh, but he genuinely wants to help students. Be open and COMMUNICATE!
He suggests you do 30 minutes everyday! I found that if you actually read the first few of the chapters and do some of the exercises, that the rest of the semester is so much easier. He does make you work for it but it is a point value grading system so once you get a certain number of points, you have an A and can stop showing up after.
I had this professor for Logic and he was the best! The class doesn't ask much of you, just look over the material and do a problem or two everyday and you'll get an A. He's is more than willing to help outside of class and his TA, Kyle, will be more than willing to help as well. Overall great professor and class!
Professor Hogg has given many life lectures that I will truly keep with me forever. I enjoy him very much as a person. However, some lectures are extremely boring and you must be a good note taker because he spends very little time writing things down on the board for you to copy. He is very tough on papers but curves everything.
If you need to understand the material BEFORE doing the homework, take Logic with someone else. You do the homework first and then ask him questions about it in class. Left me very lost and panicked and I dropped the class halfway through the semester.
Dr. Hogg is a great professor who really opened my eyes up to philosophy and gives great feedback on papers. He is also really funny and always lets you out early.
He's a humble, and very friendly professor. You will fail if you don't do the work or study.
Hogg was a very interesting professor. He would start arguments about the lesson with one student for THE ENTIRE hour and 15 minutes. Nevertheless, he was very fun to listen to most of the time and very caring.
Doesn't actually teach. I was excited to learn about philosophy, all he does the entire class is talk about his religious and political views and lord help anyone who dares disagree. The online tests were a joke and the final exam was all the online tests put together. It's easy but be ready to be bored. Learned nothing and 4.0'd. Easy Gen-Ed.
Have to make the commitment to daily homework. An hour a day is the key to this class. It works, the investment pays off. You grow in confidence as you go. Hogg drops nuggets of invaluable life lessons too!
If you are taking professor hogg for PHI101 I would 100% recommend. He has the greatest lectures that have you walking out of class feeling great. He only makes you do a few papers and his exam is so easy to study for.
If you are taking this class instead of math 122, take math 122. don't take logic. If you don't do the homework, you will fail every test. By doing the homework I mean doing at least 1-2 hours of homework every day. Just don't do it, you're better off taking math 122. HORRIBLE PROF
One of the only professors that I really learned something from. Intelligent, and cares about your education. However, he is not all butterfkies and rainbows. Funny, but professional. I encourage everyone to take a class from him
Hogg is the man. Easily one of the most fufilling courses when you finally get it. Highly recommend overmath. Also, he describes a place called funville. When you get to this portion of the course its like that movie the polar express when the kids shaking the bell, you wont hear it at first but once you get it, its dope.
Do not take this class if you want to learn on your own. You are expected to read 20+ pages before each class and expected to learn the material yourself. Ended up dropping this class because of the workload. I wanted the prof to teach us and not have us learn from this old book. Other then that, prof is caring and lets you take tests days later.
He's ok. Good intentions. Makes things harder than they should be. He's nice and cares but can be a little rude at times.
I really appreciated Hogg as a person. He had great stories and good life advice that he worked into the lessons. As far as the course actually went, you have to do a lot of the historical learning on your own, especially if you want to learn the final. He skips around a lot, but overall, he means well.
Took as a Gen Ed. I am a 3.8 student. Highly recommend not taking Hogg. He is overall just a jerk. Takes forever to grade papers so you won't know your grade till the end of the semester. Doesn't grade timely so he won't have to deal with complaints. Tried emailing him many times and didn't respond once. One big paper that he grades extremely tough
he is a great guy but I did not like how he tried to skew everyones judgement. he was fine, but he was tough on people who stuck with their views.
This professor is extremely rude. Can come across as funny and nice at times however, asking him questions is very difficult. Doesn't mind helping students but only when it is at a convenience for him. Homework is not graded but must be completed to do well. Do not take him unless you are prepared to spend countless hours a week studying.
Wouldn't say attendance is mandatory, but recommended. And you don't want to miss in-class activities. He is really helpful and understanding if you go to office hours or talk to him before/after class. Dry sense of humor. Good professor, really knows his stuff. You do have to put a bit of effort in though.
I have so much respect for Dr. Hogg as a person. He gives great advice and life stories. He believes in students and their life potential. However, he is terrible when it comes to teaching historical philosophy. I would advise you to write down all the answers to the quizes immediately after taking them for the final, otherwise you wont know.
Never again will I want a teacher like this. He is MEAN when you ask him questions. While yes he has good life lessons, He DOES NOT teach the material, expects you to learn most everything on your own. If the highest grade in the class for an exam is 72% and everyone says it was super hard. There will be no curve just the deduction of your grade.
If you are planning to take this class because it is a substitute for a math credit, just take the math credit. At least you'll actually be taught something in a math class.
He is rude. Says he wants us to express our own opinion and then doesn't even allow us to speak. Will laugh at you if he does not agree or just straight up say "no." He makes rude comments on papers and the quizzes are hard.
While attendance is not mandatory, you definitely won't want to miss any of his lectures. While the content can be a bit dry and prolonged, Hogg does his best to explain concepts carefully. Attention to exact detail is needed. He's a great professor to work with - never had any problems. Does want to see everyone succeed and gives out many chances
This is the type of course where you have to read heavily, but, you never really read outside out of it. Hogg is an awesome person and I really enjoyed the class with him. He really made ethics enjoyable and I would recommend this class! You have to show up or you will not understand what is going on
He puts so much extra credit on the exams it's unreal. The class may start out sort of difficult, but it gets easier. The class is based on 5 exams, although most of the class doesn't need to take the last exam because they've already earned an A in the class. Definitely recommend taking him for Logic! The class was an easy A if you ask me!
Hogg is by far the best Logic professor at GVSU. Please take him if you want to pass this class! He genuinely cares so much whether or not his students learn and logic becomes incredibly easy if you respect him, show up, and try hard in the beginning.
Hogg is probably one of the wisest people Ive met. I learned a ton about myself in this class. The only thing is, he is so passionate about teaching us how to be better versions of ourselves that he gets sidetracked from the course material and then you just have to read it outside of class. Totally worth it. Choose him if you want life knowledge.
Robert is one of the best professors that I have ever had. He gives so much insightful advice. He gives 6 out of class assignments. Attendance is not mandatory, but he usually gives a quiz over the chapters at the end of class. The ethics book that we read is pretty boring at times, but it is necessary to read in order to do well on the quizzes.
The absolute worst professor Ive ever had the non pleasure of meeting. Acts all high and mighty because hes a philosophy major, when in reality he should be flipping burgers at burger king. Yelled at the entire class through email and literally asked if people can process an email because students asked what the assignment was for that week.
The class is based on 5 exams, the only resource used to help you is the book, you basically do all the work on your own he is there strictly for you to ask questions but he isn't always great at answering them. he told us that we were going to hate our lives before starting a chapter and gives us a quiz every class knowing that we'll all struggle
Great teacher, gives lots of advice about life which i enjoyed. You have to work hard for your grade but it is doable. The only teacher I would want to learn logic from, because logic is hard!
Great professor, cares about his students learning the material, offers life lessons along the way too. Gets very excited about what he's teaching. Though the material is tough for a 100 level class if you put in the work you will be fine. Lot of the rates for him are from students who did no work and expected to be rewarded, you wont regret taking
3 easy papers, 3 text analysis'. Hogg keeps class fun and interesting!
Few assignments and heavy testing (quizzes/exams). The textual analysis is challenging but helpful in understanding. He welcomes various opinions in discussion but he will also share his, so prepare. He grades hard but fairly in my opinion. This class is somewhat challenging depending on your strengths/weaknesses.
He lectures. Non. Stop. Get on his good side to be his favorite student and you're set for the class. You have to make an effort for him to acknowledge you in his classes. He demands participation and will sit there until someone talks. Don't use your laptop or you will be called out in class. Go to his office hours and he'll give you answers.
We are having an exam on the 3rd week after the semester begins. He does not teach much in class, but only doing example or explaining the questions from the homework when student asked. You pretty much have to teach yourself through reading the text book. He is smart but I dont think he is good at teaching.
I have never had such a genuinely kind and caring professor. He wants his students to succeed and is willing to help them do so. he has expectations as does every other professor but Hogg is a pure gem. If you put in the effort he asks for you will be successful.
My rating is not so much about hogg as it is about the class logic. Logic is a horrible, useless class. It is so much work and reading. Literally a couple hundred pages of boring reading a week exam are pretty hard consist of a lot of memorizing forma. Take a real math class instead of this bs. Hogg is a decent guy and prof class is just horrible
He felt like my grandpa that tried to teach me lessons that go beyond normal class. I really enjoyed this guy for the multiple classes I've taken with him (even though he never remembered me). You have to go to class to know what's going on. If you do, you'll pass.
The worst professor I have ever had. Isn't understanding at all and acts like this class is apart of your major. Put the due dates in wrong on blackboard and if you miss an assignment he will act like you were supposed to know. Lectures are insanely boring and hard to follow along. Go to lecture or you wont pass.
Professor Hogg based the whole class off of the book. All of the homework was in it and you never got to know the answers to the questions unless you asked, which was nerve racking because he tests your knowledge if you get the answer wrong. He has at least one quiz a week, but sometimes will post multiple. Just don't take this prof.
I LOVED THIS PROF and his class. He is great and the class is low maintenance. There are quizzes over the readings, a few text studies, and spiritual exercises all of which take very little time. Although I am not the most interested in Philosophy I loved his life advice (lots of which was centered around dating and marriage) + he looks like Santa!
Great guy, awful professor. You will need the book and if you fall behind or can't make a class, you're in big trouble. There are weekly quizzes and you will need to do all the homework to understand what is even happening. I highly suggest taking this prof only if you will take 1-2 hours a day to go over the classwork cause otherwise, you'll fail.
If you care about your grade or have anxiety, do not take this course. The Prof is very condescending. Outside of his individual issues, the material can be really really tricky and nuanced. I don't reccomend this course unless you have some sort of background in Logic already.
He actually cares about his students. Very passionate about his job. Curves all grades bc he doesnt believe in grades!
Avoid. PHI103. At. All. Costs. The worst class I've ever taken. Material is so hard to grasp and way too philosophical. Prof. Hogg is a great man and who really does care and have good intentions, but do not take this class. Not worth the stress and tears, trust me.
He is a great down to earth guy. The people here that say if you don't spend multiple hours a day you will fail. They are either lying or are just unintelligent, I maybe spent a total of 6 hours the entire semester outside of class and ended with a C+. Professor Hogg, you did in fact take me to Funville, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.
The class is really hard to grasp. he says its a front loaded course which i guess is true but he only ever did practice problems in class. hes a pretty good guy, not the best professor. his grading scale was VERY confusing for me and many others in the class
While the class material can be difficult (and at times very frustrating), if you put in the work for the class, you will be fine. Professor Hogg is very understanding and it's clear that he cares about his students' success as well as enjoys teaching the content. He is not lying when he says he'll take you to Funville with logic :-)
This professor is very unique, he often would get off topic and talk about church and abortion. He would ask our opinions on controversial topics and when we answered and our opinion didn't match up with his he would shut us down. tbh Santa sucks
Great Professor overall. Would 100% recommend this professor.
The best professor Ive ever had. Keep the class very interesting and gives really good advice for your future. Cares for his students and the work is really easy. Quizzes over material read in class.
I enjoyed this course as he offered some good life advice. He cares about what the students think, always asks for for feedback, and makes sure we understand the material before moving on. Although personally I don't think he pushed his opinions on us, he does have very traditional views and it would be helpful to look at more relevant times.
One of the worst professors/classes I've taken. Professor Hogg seems very stuck up and behind the times. If your opinion doesn't match his, he shuts it down immediately. Lectures are boring and you are expected to read Aristotle. Didn't learn much other than about his own personal life. Would never take a class with him again.
Took Phil 103, also called Logic, I wish I had used some logic before taking this stupid class
Super kind, caring, and funny. Told lots of stories which made the lectures interesting. Make sure you read the book and attend class.
He is a great person who really cares about his students. He offers very good advice and is overall very caring. Quizzes are sometimes online and sometimes in person. Attendance is mandatory and will effect your grade if you miss more than twice in the semester. You do have to write some papers but they're short and he grades fairly well.
He tells a lot of stories about his life and gives a lot of life advice for lectures, more often than actually teaching to the book you have to read. I actually enjoyed this class a lot because of Dr. Hogg, but the quizzes are what killed my grade because they were based on the book which is kinda hard to understand.
My second favorite professor ever. You could tell he really cared about your well-being and wanted you to have a successful life. He did get off topic a lot, but he always could relate it to the class. He would ask us again and again to share our opinions, which I really liked. The book is confusing, so pay attention in class and take notes.
Professor Hogg's was my favorite professor at gvsu. He is so inspirational and his lectures were absolutely amazing. He is very kind and caring and actually wants to interact with the class. He begs to hear what everyone thinks and wants you to fight back with what he says. If he is your professor I would be relieved. TAKE NOTES!!!!
Super nice, and funny. He gets off topic a lot during class time with random life lessons. But he actually cares about his students, if you need to talk to anyone you can always count on him and he will stay after class with you. He cares a lot that you participate and give your opinion even if you are disagreeing with him. Great guy.
Was my favorite professor, you can tell he actually cares about his students and wants you to be successful. Class is an easy A and is actually enjoyable to be in.
Hes a great professor! I love him so much, he really cares about his students! He doesn't have any slides so make sure you show up to class, he sometimes goes on rants, but otherwise this class is easy! make sure you study for the quizzes and there is very little homework, when there is its just easy papers! Would take Again!
Dr. Hogg is one of the best professors that I have ever had! If you can, take a class with him! He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed, not just in the class but in life. His lectures are interesting and he wants people to push back against what he says. The coursework is manageable there are a few quizzes and short paper.
Professor Hogg was a great teacher, However this class should not be a 100 level class. He'll tell you on the first day that you must go to class and do the exercises outside of class in order to pass. I went to every single class and would not have received the grade I did had I decided to miss/skip class at all. Also, Funville was overhyped.
The class in general is easy. I found this Professor to be a bit passive..it also took him weeks to reply to my email. He is very strict about attendance and does roll calls at the beginning of class. You're allowed 2 absences and every absence after that will affect your grade by a level
only allowed two attendances before it negatively impacts your grade for every following class you miss. Lectures are very unrelated and typically insensitive to other ppls opinions and views. lots of quizzes and he gave no study guide or advice on how to prepare for the final. he's a nice person but not the best professor
Very insightful professor to say the least. While some people would say him talking about things like relationships is boring, I truly enjoy it. Considering I've been in a relationship for over a year, I find the things he says about his wife reinforcing and entertaining. As long as you highlight and do the assignments/readings, you should be fine.
This was a really good course, I learned a lot of valuable lessons. The lectures are really insightful and helpful, not just for the course but for life in general. Take him before he retires.
He is a great person and cares about his students but the lectures for the most part were long and boring. attendance is basically mandatory and if you miss more than 3 classes it impacts your grade a lot. mostly everything is online except for the final exam.
He is a nice guy but is a little out of touch with modern students. Expected us to submit assignments a certian way but couldn't tell us how to do it, expected us to "just know" lectures were long and boring and didn't make sense. Only good part was him talking about his wife and other personal stories
biggest problem with this prof was ridiculous attendance requirements for the content you receive in class. only allowed 1 absence all semester and any more drop you like 3% per miss. he just reads out of the book all class too and tells stories. nothing wrong with that but very boring. he is a nice guy who genuinely cares about his students though
Hogg is a very nice professor, I loved him for ethics but I would not recommend logic to anyone ever. I took it instead of math and I regretted it every single day. I am a junior and the lowest grade I've ever gotten is a B, I barely passed this class with a D.
Professor Hogg is a sweet guy who does care about his students. However, this class is the worst class I have ever taken. The material is hard to grasp, and class time is spent only going over questions from the textbook. We were expected to do mostly everything on our own. If you are thinking of taking this over a math class, don't.
This professor is very condescending. If you don't know what's going on, he will be very mean to you.
Prof. Hogg expects a lot from his students. Not in a bad way though. He lets students retake tests, he will go in depth with questions and he is great at explaining what needs to be known. Logic is a hard class but if you're willing to listen and put in the work you will do fine. Especially by the end of the semester he is very willing to give help
Insightful lectures, though the professor can be a bit strict. Engage with the material and you'll learn a lot - not just for the course, but for life. Unstuck study and ChatGPT were super helpful for study prep. Definitely take this class before he retires.
When Prof Hogg says practice every day, DO IT! Prof Hogg is an amazing person and teaches with knowledge and passion. He never means to be rude he is just an honest guy and only wants to help his students succeed. With practice outside of class it is very doable to get an A. Hogg made me love philosophy and I will never forget him as a teacher.
I took this class due to my love of philosophy, but the professor is rather off putting. The first hour or two was spent on telling us this class was near impossible and most people will fail. This is not true, it's slightly harder then some classes but no harder then a highschool course. Simply ignore his rants and focus on learning the info.
Most logical thing you can do is not take this class.
READ THE BOOK its incredible how many students think they can just squeeze by without doing hardly any coursework. if you dont read the book you will not succeed in this class. Dr. Hogg was overall a great professor who dishes out good life advice like candy.
