everyone gets an A
You are the best linguistic professor I have had in my entire life. You are the VERY BEST!
Charles you are fun and sometime cranky yet one of the best teacher in concordia's linguistic department. you are great and we learn something with you. many thanks
I am totally falling love with linguistics because of you, Charles! Thanks a lot!!!
he is funny and his class is fun.
Fond memories of the challenging and fascinating classes. Take him if you have any interest in Cognitive Science / Linguistics.
his idea is extremely new, and his class is fun.take his class and have a fun!
Great prof. He is very enthusiastic about the material and has a genuine interest in what he is teaching. He is always willing to meet with you and give you advice. A group of us went over to his house for dinner and fun -- a great experience.
Very fair teacher... Don't take him unless you have a strong interest in linguistics. Pretty easy grader, but his lectures are quite deep and require a lot of thought if they are to be understood. Tends to let his TA's take care of students' needs. Won't change your life or anything but give him a try
very helpful prof
I did Cognitive Sciences with him. It was my favorite course at Concordia. Thanks to him, I fell in love with cognitive sciences. Thank you, thank you Charles!
a very good prof who knows his stuff. Very helpful and easy to reach if you have any questions. His exams are easy but the course itself requires a lot of thinking. I'm taking another class with him again next semester :)
Got an 85 and still got a B. The grades are so inflated that they're curved down so watch out. The TA pretty much taught most of the course during office hours since no one really understood anything. He tries hard and class is interesting though. If you're going to take him, make sure the TA knows who you are right away. Not much Chomsky :(
Excellent. Hot.
brilliant, creative teacher. realizes the material is hard and works very hard to make it accessible. wants to see students succeed but more importantly is very engaged personally in the concepts of cognitive linguisitics
A super great teacher! He's passionate about his field and presents the materials in a way that captures everyones interest.
This class is very difficult and I always find myself browing the internet when he's talking bunch of things that I don't understand. Every class if an episode of Peanuts when the prof's blah blah blahing...I studied hard but I only got a D 'cause the class requires a lot of absurb readings.
Terrific adventure into the exploration of cognition. Speedy, charmingly self-effacing, challenging. I e-mailed him a lot with questions and he always responded. He wants you to challenge him with tough questions. Readings can be hard, especially Chomsky.

My favorite professor so far. I hated linguistics before this class. I recommend this amazing class and professor to everyone. I felt engaged by the subject, curious to see what I would learn next... Reiss is original, dedicated, passionate, accesible and down to reality. His class is not easy, but defenitely worth taking.
I found that while the class required alot of reading and little assignments - if you actually read the textbook and listened to what he was saying then you were fine... The review papers were a joke, 1 page and it wasn't hard to get 10/10... whereas the homework assignments were a bit more difficult. He really enjoys what he teaches.
He is a good teacher but the subject is very difficult. You need to attend every class and seek extra help if you don't understand which you won't because Charles' lesson on ergativity is incredibly unclear.
Readings are interesting, class is incredibly boring simplifications of the readings. Teacher dismisses the whole branch of philosophy because Chomsky disagreed with some philosophers that he admits to having never read. He made a mistake in my grade and when I told him, he E-mailed me back to tell me I was wrong, before he checked.
He is always an interesting professor. He is active in his field, still researching, still writing. It shows in his classes.
I love Charles!! He's one of the reasons for me to learn linguistics. The best linguistics professor I've met till now. intelligent, interesting, helpful, knowledgable, etc. Take his class if you have chance!
A Chomsky clone all-the-way! However, anyone with half-a-brain knows that Chomsky hasn't had it right since the 90s. Thus, there's nothing to learn here. Therefore, anything with Reiss is a complete waste of time. Totally unacceptable!
Covers little material, easy marker. Pointless lectures, textbook is clearer and more straightforward when it comes to explain most material. His assignments and exams tend to be very long and tricky, yet the in-class/textbook examples are much easier to understand. Overall, the class is enjoyable and it's an easy A. Teacher is quite funny himself.
Way too hard for an elective, very demanding, papers due every week.. He is nice, but the class is incredibly boring and irrelevant. Don't take it if you are not a ling major.
Hilarious prof. I love the subject matter and the way he presents it is amazing! He makes the dry stuff interesting and/or amusing...I might be biased because I think he's so freaken hot but I would strongly recommend taking his class!
Charles is a fantastic prof whom I can legitimately say is solely responsible for sparking my interest in Linguistics. Thanks Charles, I'm still continuing, just on the other side of the country now! Excellent class, highly recommended.
Awful teacher. His lectures are a waste of time and useless in preparing for exams. He threw out half the course and then picked our marks out of thin air. It all worked out in the end but high stress all the way through.
Does a decent job of explaining, and is available enough outside of class. His class is basically an argument for Universal Grammar. I find his attitude too patronizing, thinks students are dumber and more naive than they are. Paints Chomsky out to be a terrible writer when it's not the case. Tutorials are useless but mandatory.
Very boring class - nothing makes sense until you do the essays. Tutorials mandatory - which I found super helpful. I preferred them to the actual lectures.
Very interesting class!
He taught me Language and Mind: The Chomskyan Program. The course load is heavy, but seeing as he wrote the book we are using, he definitely knows his stuff. I do not love his class because some of the stuff is super hard, but some of the stuff is very interesting as well. He loves linguistics, and it really shows. He is very funny (or tries to be)
What a amazingly smart man!!! So helpful. I had no interest in linguistics prior to this class, but he made me switch majors from psychology. He is funny too. Also, he wrote the text book with his wife, who is also amazing. That says a lot. You dont get that at Mcgill.
Prof Reiss is a very nice guy and has lots of enthusiasm for teaching! It helps that the textbook we use, he wrote, so he knows his stuff. His exams are mostly multiple choice, however they cover a lot of material and review for an exam is basically everything you learned in the class ever! LING 222 covered a lot of great linguistic material :)
Love Charles. I wish I could stay in school forever to continue having him as a professor. He is clear, funny, smart and super interesting. Please take him!!
This course is easy, you just have to attend and understand his argument for universal grammar, his classes are exciting, and his tests are easy multiple choice questions.
This class is a lot of work (reading, small papers, homework) but ultimately you'll get a good great if you put the work in. The topics covered in class are very interesting (sometimes the synax stuff is boring though), but Charles is clearly very passionate about the material and wants his students to enjoy it and find it interesting too.
He makes the class interesting and knows what he's talking about. If you volunteer for a demonstration, get ready to do something ridiculous and have your name on the midterm or exam. I had a great time throughout the entire course, including the exam. (I was literally laughing in the exam because of the multiple choice answers.
Great teacher. Ive taken his classes twice so far and would take him again. Guaranteed B+ or higher if you pay attention in class and try to participate. If he sees you are trying he will take that into consideration, and is the type of professor who does not want to see any students fail. Just try your best and you are sure to get a good grade!
Charles is a great professor. He is very interested in the subject, and it's clearly his passion. He is extremely knowledgeable and is very easy to approach with questions. There are many small assignment throughout the semester, but nothing too difficult. As long as you attend the lectures and do the readings you are guaranteed a good grade!
I like him but sometimes even with his explanation the subject does not sink in.
I took this class as an elective and after taking it I would not recommend it to anyone. The subject matter is beyond a 200 level course and he bombards you with assignments (1-2 a week). There is also a text book and a bunch of other articles you are expected to read which are extremely confusing. I would avoid this class at all costs!!
Funny and interesting lectures. Would definitely recommend.
The course is interesting, but you have to listen and follow the lectures. He makes linguistics easy to understand. He knows most people are taking the course as an elective so he find examples out of every day things to make you understand better. Good teacher, very helpful. There is homework but it's easy and helps you understand a lot.
Undoubtedly a poor choice to lead a class on the most tantalizing subject we can be studying in the here and now. His method of teaching actually wires his students into disbelieving the information he presents to the class (if you've taken 222 and are a critical thinker, I think you know exactly what I'm talking about).
Best Prof ever!
Charles is clearly very passionate about the subject and in trying to make sure his students really understand the information. There is A LOT of work, homework and reading expected of the students, but it is all relevant and ranges from mildly interesting to very interesting. Attending class is a must, as is putting in 100% on all homework.
great prof. knowledgeable, unpretentious, and very funny. there is a lot to cover in this class, though, so be prepared.
I have had Charles Reiss for both Ling222 and Ling373, and he is was absolutely an amazing prof!!! He makes learning fun, and he actually made me look at the world differently through taking both of these courses!!! Although some people may criticize his teaching style, I absolutely love it!! Schools should have more professors like him!!!
This class was taught very well, the lectures are worth going to. Charles keeps things interesting and fun and explains the main ideas very clearly in class. His marking isn't super hard and as long as you understand the main concepts you'll do good. He is very approachable and always willing to explain something over again until you understand it.
Charles is a great prof, his teaching is so great and he assigns thought-provoking readings. I really felt like I got more out of this class than just a good grade.
Engaging lectures, good sense of humour, responds well to people who ask questions. Like others have said, you can tell he's passionate about the subject matter and he's excited for us to learn about it. Also, in spite of the workload, I kind of enjoyed the assignments? They never felt like filler; I always learned something from them.
Engaging lecturer who is passionate about the subject and really knows how to TEACH it to novices! Subject is very interesting and very much appealed to my philosophy background, even though philosophy appears to be somewhat out of favour with linguists. But this subject matter is a philosphical outlook based on scientific study. Excellent course
He was a great teacher, very animated and while the material could be quite boring, he explained it in a clear and interesting way. He's a Harvard grad, really qualified and you can tell he's a smart guy.
This course was one of the best electives I've taken (Comp Sci major). Charles is an engaging and informed professor, lectures are dynamic and interesting. Work load is high and you absolutely must read the textbook if you want to succeed. It is not a difficult course per-se but requires more work than the average 200 class
You can probably pass without going to class and only reading the textbook, however you can also avoid reading the textbook by going to class. Charles is very engaging and really wants his students to succeed. He's a Harvard graduate and well respected in his field. He's hilarious and devoted to his work, you can tell he loves his job. Take him.
This was my first time taking a class with Charles and I absolutely loved it! He made his lectures very interesting and entertaining (I actually wanted to come to class in the morning!). There were a lot of assignments, but they were very easy and did not take very long to complete. If you can, take one of his classes!
I have been taking him for 3 semesters now honestly best prof, he really is caring and wants his students to succeed!
Very interesting class, he makes sure its not boring. It is also a great Introduction into linguistics and he really wants you to learn. I would recommend any class of his!
Charles is generally a nice guy. Assignments are simple if you keep up with the readings. One thing about him that ticked me off was that he never gave the format for the final exam and didnt mention if it was cumulative or not. We were all kind of lost about where to start studying. He just said to read until the end of the book. No other help.
Very knowledgeable and wants you to do well! Picks on his students, which can be intimidating, but he wants to make sure the material is understood and getting through. Lots of online quizzes, but unlimited attempts are allowed, so you can keep doing them till you get 100. Phonology with him is great, so is Ling222. Always there to answer questions
Great Prof, he wrote the textbook for this class and you can tell he really enjoys teaching this material to new students, especially computer science students. I took this course as an elective (not knowing anything about linguistics) but came out with a fair bit of interesting knowledge and a liking towards the theories presented in class.
Charles is a solid professor and an extremely fair grader. He maintains a very professional and highly respected reputation as well. He challenges the mind with questions that need to be read carefully to ensure we are learning the material correctly. A very humorous teacher who cares deeply about the students. Excellent course for LING students.
Best professor I've ever had. Took his Chomskiyan Program class during the pandemic. He's very smart, funny, caring, and wants you to LEARN. He stayed an hour after class just to make sure we understood the material. He encourages skepticism and welcomes criticism. His class made me wanna switch to linguistics. Lots of work but easy. TAKE HIM!
Funny guy, really knows his stuff and answers questions clearly to make material easier to understand. There were several small papers to write but easily manageable. He gives a lot of free and obvious questions in the exams, and his textbooks are cheap too which is a bonus.
Charles is undeniably funny but can also be a real pain. He has his own way to care, but does make quizzes in order to trick students, which he does not apologize for. He is incredibly disorganized and our Language acquisition class was a mess. We did not cover proper matter until the end of the term, where it ended up condensed.
Charles for language acquisition was not a good choice. While his 222 and 373 classes are good (while although he has his moments then too), but 425 wasnt good. Between unrelated material and not stopping debates that became too harsh and personal (also not lang acq related), this class was just not a place to learn. 222&373 repeated.
The class was okay but it was slow. It felt like the pace was always set by the students who did not do the reading or the prof assumed people couldn't keep up. I wish we had covered more. I was a little disappointed that we got to the interesting content only at the second to last lecture.
Charles is great and the textbook he and his wife wrote for the class is a great read. Put in the work and you're good to go.
Terrible terrible terrible course and teacher, not organized, and does as he pleases, doesn't allow students registered in the ACSD to get their accommodations, also mocks students who voice their concerns for the class, he doesn't post the grades or the corrections so you have no way of knowing how you're doing, so many things wrong, NEVER AGAIN.
There aren't many professors like Charles. He makes the material fun and it's hard not to look forward to his lectures. Just an approachable dude with so much enthusiasm.
Best Professor. Doesn't care if you don't participate but tries to make class fun. I'd take him for literally anything if I could. He is very intelligent without any of the arrogance.
Charles is a great professor who enjoys keeping the lectures open to discussion amongst the class from readings. Class discussions were frequent which made learning newer material difficult. Assignments and exams were challenging with some questions that seem unimportant to be asked in a linguistics class. Despite this, the class was fun.
Nice guy
He is one of the best professors I've had so far. He is passionate about the material and his lectures are great if you are interested in the material. The class is a lot of work, but if you go to class and keep up with readings you will be fine.
Charles is an insightful professor that is very passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are interesting and make you think outside the box. There are several mini papers that are peer graded, small assignments as well as a midterm and a final. All fairly easy if you attend the lectures and read his textbook.
Attending the lectures (paying close attention, taking good notes), and reading the book only for concepts you're struggling to understand is an easy way to get a good grade in the class. Teacher presented material in a very engaging manner that I found highly engaging, mixed in theory with real world examples and application.
Charles Reiss is well respected in the field and knows a lot about the subject material. However, he makes simple concepts overly complicated in his lectures to the point of confusion - he likes the sound of his own voice. There is usually some sort of evaluation every week so there is lots of work/readings. Not recommended as a general elective.
Snooze fest. I couldn't understand what the class was about until AFTER the midterm (and I still don't fully know now). Thank God for the TA would've bombed this class without her. Textbook (written by him) is equally boring. Couldnt be bothered to read it. He's smart but wow what a pointless field of study. Don't take if ur not a linguistics major
Worst professor I've ever had. Very surprising to see he has a decent rating! Because he's certainly not funny and does not know how to give a coherent lecture... Hated every moment of this class. Should have dropped it when I had the chance.
Had no idea what was going on the whole semester, we never got any of our grades back except for the final letter grade
He's arrogant in his teqching and doesn't care if you understand or not. Very full of himself and wrote a book that he requires everyone to buy and does not post any slides. a terrible prof.
He's a very good professor and knows what he's talking about. He is the author of our textbook which says a lot about his knowledge. He's lenient with due dates and is not a harsh grader.
Amazing lecturer. Probably my favourite class. Had a great time! My only complaint would be the dates on the syllabus are completely wrong, and so sometimes homework pops up on Moodle out of nowhere. Had to write a few 500-word reading responses, but luckily the midterm and final were multiple-choice. (Also very fun final I almost started laughing.)
Okay overall, but not great: he's clearly passionate about his material, and gives lots of examples which sometimes help, but he is so disorganised and complicates simple stuff. Lots of readings and short essays, and most of them barely link with the lectures, the book and the class in general. Content is easy to understand, but lots of extra work
My favourite prof to date, hands down. He makes a point of actually knowing the students who participate in lectures. He encourages participation but never calls on those who don't volunteer, so no one is put on the spot. Very fair. Quizzes are exercises straight out of the book. Read the book & do the work. It's a heavy course. Great prof!
Hands down one of the best teacher I had. Passionate, funny, caring, remembers everyone's name by the second class. Had him over a decade ago and I still remember some lessons he gave.
